Bhagavad-gita 9.20

Sofia, Bulgaria

om namo bhagavate vasudevaya
[Gurudeva sings three times and devotees repeat]

Sankarshan das Adhikari: Srimad Bhagavad-gita, Chapter number 9, text 20.
[Lecture translated into Bulgarian by a devotee]

trai-vidya mam soma-pah puta-papa
yajnair istva svar-gatim prarthayante
te punyam asadya surendra-lokam
asnanti divyan divi deva-bhogan

trai-vidyah—the knowers of the three Vedas; mam—unto Me; soma-pah—drinkers of soma juice; puta—purified; papah—of sins; yajñaih—with sacrifices; istva—after worshiping; svah-gatim—passage to heaven; prarthayante—pray for; te—they; punyam—pious; asadya—attaining; sura-indra—of Indra; lokam—the world; asnanti—enjoy; divyan—celestial; divi—in heaven; deva-bhogan—the pleasures of the gods.

Those who study the Vedas and drink the soma juice, seeking the heavenly planets, worship Me indirectly. Purified of sinful reactions, they take birth on the pious, heavenly planet of Indra, where they enjoy godly delights.

SDA: Everybody can move forward. No need to sit in the back, when there is so much space. Everyone can move closer. Family that prays together stays together.

The word trai-vidyah refers to the three Vedas - Sama, Yajur and Rg. A brahmana who has studied these three Vedas is called a tri-vedi. Anyone who is very much attached to knowledge derived from these three Vedas is respected in society. Unfortunately, there are many great scholars of the Vedas who do not know the ultimate purport of studying them. Therefore Krsna herein declares Himself to be the ultimate goal for the tri-vedis. Actual tri-vedis take shelter under the lotus feet of Krsna and engage in pure devotional service to satisfy the Lord. Devotional service begins with the chanting of the Hare Krsna mantra and side by side trying to understand Krsna in truth. Unfortunately those who are simply official students of the Vedas become more interested in offering sacrifices to the different demigods like Indra, Candra, etc. By such endeavor, the worshipers of different demigods are certainly purified of the contamination of the lower qualities of nature and are thereby elevated to the higher planetary system or heavenly planets known as Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapoloka, etc. Once situated on those higher planetary systems, one can satisfy his senses hundreds of thousands of times better than on this planet. [End of purport]

om ajñana-timirandhasya jñananjana-salakaya
cakshur unmilitam yena tasmai sri-gurave namah

sri-caitanya-mano-bhishtam sthapitam yena bhu-tale
svayam rupah kada mahyam dadati sva-padantikam

SDA: In some ways this sounds like a very good deal to satisfy your senses hundreds of thousands of times better than on this planet. If we had a billboard advertising , "Come to this vacation spot, and we would give you hundreds of thousands of times more pleasure than you can get anywhere else on the planet earth,” that would be a very popular destination. Just imagine if we could eat nice food like we had a nice meal a couple of hours ago, it was very tasty. But just imagine if it could be a hundred thousand times more delicious. In the material world, they take sex pleasure as the greatest pleasure. Just imagine if you could have sex which is hundred thousand times greater than any sex on this earth. That is pretty incredible enjoyment. Why we aren't going for it? Why we are not thinking “let’s go to Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapoloka”. Do you know why?

a-brahma-bhuvanal lokah
punar avartino ‘rjuna
mam upetya tu kaunteya
punar janma na vidyate

"From the highest planet in the material world down to the lowest, all are places of misery wherein repeated birth and death take place, but for one who attains My abode, O son of Kunti, never takes birth again”. [Bg. 8.16]

So try to understand the point here, the pleasure which is hundreds of thousands of times greater than the pleasure on this planet is also misery. Just like here on this planet earth, many people think that if I can just somehow get to America then I will enjoy. But the people in America are so miserable, miserable people! They can't even enjoy a nice kirtana. They have so much heavy false ego. They don't know how to enjoy the simple things in life. And now they are afraid of the terrorists. So the point is we shouldn’t try to enjoy any pleasure of this material world. We should simply try to enjoy Krishna because Krishna gives us unlimited enjoyment. There is no limit to how much pleasure we can taste in Krishna consciousness. Just like today in the village we had a kirtana and I thought I was just absolutely in heaven. That kirtana was so enlivening. And then they served the feast and I went even into a higher heaven. And now I am here again with all of you, and have entered into an even higher heaven. So Krishna consciousness is just ever expandingly happy. Why hundreds of thousands of times? We have pleasure which is trillions, quadrillions, quintillions, septillions, octillions of times more pleasurable than the pleasure experienced on the heavenly planets. So, Krishna consciousness is not artificial renunciation. Krishna consciousness is for the connoisseurs of enjoyment. Connoisseur means a person who is most expert in enjoying. Just like there is connoisseur of fine wines, connoisseur of exotic vacation spots in the world. Someone who really has tried everything and knows what is the the finest taste, he is called a connoisseur. So that person who has expert knowledge of all the ways he can enjoy in this world, he will take to Krishna consciousness because it is the supreme enjoyment. That is one definition of the word Krishna. "Krish" means greatest and "na" means pleasure. So Krishna is the greatest pleasure. So anyone who is after Krishna, he is going for the greatest pleasure. Only someone who is foolish would not go to Krishna. Actually everyone is going after Krishna. But they are going after His shadow. This material nature is the shadow of Krishna and that is why it is attractive. But the shadow is nothing compared to the real thing. Just like if I bring one gulab jamun and I say, "Alright, you can enjoy the shadow of the gulab jamun”. How much juice can you get out of the shadow? Not even one drop of juice. But from that real gulab jamun, you can get so much sweet nectar. So, Krishna consciousness is the ultimate gulab jamun. From that gulab jamun, you can squeeze unlimited oceans of nectar. There is so much nectar in one pure utterance of the Hare Krishna mantra that the entire universe cannot contain that nectar, and it has to ooze out through the coverings of the universe.

So, we have to understand not to be fools. You can get so much nectar that the universe can't even contain it. Why in the world would you go after sense gratification? Is this sound philosophy or is it simply some ‘Hare Krishna’ hype? Like Gimme uses some big sales pitch to exploit you? Or am I giving you the ultimate secret of success? Someone could ask that question, “The speakers of the temple are very charismatic and they talk with big words and they have a big smile and they look so happy but it could just be a bunch of hype. They could be just trying to exploit us and control us and all that”. Is this for real or is it just a really some slick sales pitch? How would you know? You have to try it. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. So if you say, "Well, if this appears so attractive, this could just be a very sophisticated sales pitch. How will I know whether Krishna consciousness is for real or just someone has put together a very good marketing package here"? You have to try it, that is all. What is the method in modern day science? Experiment, observation and hypothesis. They will perform an experiment and then they will observe that experiment and then they will make their hypothesis on the basis of their observation. So, all I am asking you to do is this, be scientific, make an experiment. Try chanting Hare Krishna. Observe the results. And draw your conclusion. So, this is simply scientific. And why it should not be scientific? Krishna is the original scientist. The acaryas are the greatest scientists. In my e-course, one of the students objected that “how can you call Krishna consciousness scientific?”. He said that, “You are misusing this word ‘science’; you cannot call Krishna consciousness science”. But I looked it up in the dictionary and according to the dictionary; any system of knowledge is considered science. So, is this not a system of knowledge? Actually there are many systems of knowledge which try to explain the universe. I have accepted this Krishna consciousness philosophy because it explains the universe better than any other explanation that has ever been given in history. And I can tell you this: I am not a blind follower. If you can present to me a system of knowledge better than what Srila Prabhupada has given, I will become your disciple because I am a lover of truth. I did not blindly accept Krishna consciousness. I accepted it because I have never found a better explanation of truth. And I have been searching ever since 1965. Actually there is no better system of truth. Because Krishna said [Bg 9.2]:

raja-vidya raja-guhyam
pavitram idam uttamam
pratyaksavagamam dharmyam
su-sukham kartum avyayam

“This knowledge is the king of education. It is the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, …”

And what is the last item? Anybody know the last item?

Devotee: “Joyfully performed.”

SDA: “Joyfully performed”, that is right. "Susukham". So, by experimentation we can try it out and we can verify, we can confirm it with our own practical experience that everything that Krishna said is absolutely true.

But even if there is some other philosophy, just like one time someone told me that “everything is an illusion”. That was their philosophy, everything is an illusion. Of course, I could have easily defeated that philosophy because when I'd say, “well, if everything is an illusion, then your philosophy is also an illusion”. But I was thinking that “if everything is an illusion, then Krishna is an illusion. Well, then Krishna is the best of all the illusions”. And I still practice Krishna consciousness.

So, we can open it up now if there are any questions. What time is the aratik?

Devotee: Seven 'o clock.

SDA: Seven 'o clock? Anyway, this is my last chance to speak to you all. This is my last lecture. We are leaving early tomorrow before mangala arati. We are leaving here at 4 'O clock, 4:00AM.

Vishnu Priya Mataji: 3:30

SDA: 4:30

Devotees: 3:30.

SDA: 3:30. Okay. Mataji and I have been so much touched by your wonderful devotion, your wonderful Krishna consciousness, your wonderful mood of vaisnava-seva, your wonderful mood of guru-seva. We have been so much pleased with all of you. This has been one of the most wonderful experiences of our entire life to be with you here this week and we are very much looking forward to coming back in the spring after gaura purnima.

Devotees: Hari bol! Hari bol!

SDA: We are going to try to record a CD here so we can all go to a recording studio, make a CD of these kirtanas and then distribute it all over the world. The Bulgarian yatra will become famous! [Laughter]

Translator: Can I just translate this?

SDA: Oh, yes. Go ahead.

[Devotee asks a question in Bulgarian]

Translator: His question is, now he is chanting out of duty because he knows he has to chant but he is asking what should he feel? What should his feelings be?

SDA: You should feel that how Krishna is so kind, He has given you this medicine to solve all of your problems. You should feel great gratitude within your heart “How Krishna is so kind and Prabhupada is so kind, the devotees are so kind to give me this Hare Krishna mantra.”

Devotee: The happiness that you are speaking about which is trillions many times greater can be tasted by you on your platform of spiritual advancement and for us we can only strive to achieve this.

SDA: You can also taste it. Everyone can taste. Even if we don't taste the full nectar, we can taste enough nectar to encourage us to go deeper into the process. That is all that is required, just enough nectar to encourage you to go deeper into it, because that way you will continue to make progress. Krishna will only give you as much nectar as what you deserve actually, ye yatha mam prapadyante, tams tathaiva bhajamy aham,“In as much as they surrender to Me, I reward them accordingly”. So, if you want the nectar, you have to surrender as much possible. That is how you will taste the nectar.

Translator: That is what he is saying.

SDA: Just try to surrender more and more every day. And if you associate with people who are tasting more nectar than you, then you can quickly and easily taste more nectar in their association. That is how we tasted so much nectar. We were in Prabhupada's association. He was tasting unlimited nectar. So we could get at least few drops. Those few drops were more relishable than any pleasure of this material world.

Devotee: I have read in a disciple meeting of Bhakti Vaibhava Swami where he is saying that a disciple should always feel when his spiritual master is satisfied with him and when not.

SDA: Yes, we have to know when we are pleasing our guru and when we are not pleasing our guru. Because that is how you please Krishna. You please Krishna by pleasing your spiritual master. That is how you please Krishna. S.o, you have to become expert to know what pleases your guru and what doesn't please him

Sri Bhagavad-gita ki jaya!

Devotees: Srila Sankarshan Prabhu ki jaya!
