[Lecture translated into Latvian by a devotee]

Sankarshan Das Adhikari: We are very happy to be with you all here today. We understand that you are studying how to produce food. As long as we have material bodies, food is required. Without food, the body will die. In the ancient Vedic wisdom of India there is a very nice formula given. How you will get your food?

annad bhavanti bhutani
parjanyad anna-sambhavah
yajñad bhavati parjanyo
yajñah karma-samudbhavah

Krishna says in the Gita,

“All living bodies subsist on food grains, which are produced from rains. Rains are produced by performance of yajña [sacrifice], and yajña is born of prescribed duties”. Bg 3.14

In other words, everything that is happening within nature is going on within natural laws. One who knows how to act in harmony within those natural laws, benefits greatly. And one who does not know how to harmonize with the natural laws, they must suffer. So, would anybody here like to suffer? If you enjoy suffering raise your hand. Anyone likes suffering? Nobody wants to suffer? You mean you all want to be happy? Alright, then you have to hear what I have to say, because I am going to teach you how to be unlimitedly happy by being in harmony with the Supreme Being.

Getting back to food production, I don't care how nice the soil is, the dirt, the earth.

Translator: You don't care how nice the soil is?

SDA: It doesn't matter how good quality it is. It doesn't matter how much fertilizer you may have. It doesn't matter how much nice sunshine you have. If you don't have water, your food is not going to grow. Who provides the water? Does the Latvian government manufacture water? That water is given by God. So, if you want sufficient water, you have to satisfy God. Too much water is also a problem. And too little water is also a problem. We must have just the right amount of water. And we have no control over that. It is not that the Latvian Parliament can vote how much water will come. That is under the supervision of the higher powers within this universe. So if we want to have the right amount of water, then we have to learn how to harmonize with God. This is an ancient science. It is called Krishna consciousness where you, the individual person, must learn and master the art of how to harmonize with God. If we can do this as a society, then all the problems will be solved. There won't be too much water nor will there be too little water, and you will have sufficient food.

So, how do we do that? How do we live in harmony with God? That Supreme Person is providing all necessities. Everything we have is His gift: our body, our clothing, this building, our friends, our family, our money, our car, our food, the air we breathe, our watch, our cellphone. Everything you have is a gift of God, even the very beating of your heart is a gift of God. Can you make your heart beat or not beat by your will power? No, you cannot. That is the mercy of God upon you. He keeps your heart beating to keep you alive. So, that Someone Who is giving you absolutely everything, do you think that Person deserves some gratitude from you? Do you think we should show that Person some appreciation. Or should we just ignore Him like, "Ah, He doesn't even exist." Just like your parents, they have given you everything, isn't it? If you said “Well, my parents don't exist, they are just a myth”. What would your parents think if you said that? Wouldn't they be hurt? Wouldn't they be angry? If you said, "My father is a myth. My mother is a myth. She doesn't exist. Someone just made up a story that I have a mother and a father." Wouldn't that be rude? That will be a horrible thing to not show them any gratitude, to not even acknowledge their existence. That would be horrible. Why do we do that with God? We say “God is dead. God is just a myth. Who cares about God? Why He does not do more for me?” He is doing everything for us and we don't acknowledge it and we don’t show any gratitude. And then we wonder why we are in difficulty. You know what this means? I hate to say this. We are stupid. We are just plain stupid. We don't acknowledge that Person Who is giving us everything and we wonder why we are having difficulties. If we would just start showing some gratitude to God, for everything He is giving us at every moment, then we will find that everything we need comes. The rain will come in just the sufficient quantity. Everything will come to make us happy.

This you should know for your class on food production. If you want sufficient food from the earth then you have to show your gratitude to the Supreme Being. In fact you should live an entire life showing your gratitude to the Supreme Being. In our Krishna consciousness movement, we learn how to always show gratitude to the Supreme Person, and by doing that, we become unlimitedly happy. We become completely free of anxiety. This process that we are practicing, you can also practice. You don't have to shave your head; you don't have to put clay on your forehead. You don't have to wear a robe like this. All you have to do is just chant the holy names of God. And if you do so with enthusiasm, I can absolutely guarantee that you will experience a feeling of happiness beyond any taste of happiness you ever had in your whole life. And all you have to do to experience it is to join in with me in one minute from now. I will teach you how to do it. Now if you are very shy, you will sit there and you will not chant. You will simply sit there and look. “What is this crazy person up in front of the class doing?” But if you are very bold and daring, if you are a very adventurous person, who is willing to try something new and exciting, which may completely transform your existence, then you will repeat after me. We have what is called a mantra.

'Mantra' is a Sanskrit word, which is composed of two syllables. ‘Man’ and ‘tra’. ‘Man' refers to the mind and ‘tra’ means ‘to deliver’. So, mantra is that sound vibration which delivers your mind. So we have a very, very powerful mantra which comes from ancient India. This mantra has been chanted by enlightened sages for thousands and thousands of years. This mantra is so valuable that we could charge you ten thousand Lat to teach it you. But today we will teach you this mantra absolutely free. If you want to write it down in your notebook you can do that. But I will teach you how to memorize it right now so even if you don't have it written you will remember it. All you have to do is, carefully repeat after me with enthusiasm. Are you ready?

[Gurudeva chants each word of the Mahamantra at a time and devotees repeat]

'Hare'. 'Krishna'. 'Hare' . 'Krishna' . 'Krishna'. 'Krishna' . 'Hare'. 'Hare'.
'Hare'. 'Rama'. 'Hare'. 'Rama'. 'Rama'. ‘Rama.’ 'Hare'. 'Hare'.

Now we will go with two words at a time. This mantra has sixteen words. So we just did one word at a time. That is the first time through. It is going to get harder each time, so pay careful attention. It is easy to repeat one word. Now we are going all the way to repeating all sixteen words. But now we are going to use two words. It is getting a little harder. Let's see who can do two words now.

[Gurudeva chants two words of the Mahamantra at a time and devotees repeat]

'Hare Krishna'. 'Hare Krishna'. 'Krishna Krishna'. 'Hare Hare'.
'Hare Rama'. 'Hare Rama'. 'Rama Rama'. 'Hare Hare'.

Alright, very good.[Claps his hands] Some of you over there, dead, sleeping [Laughter]

So now we will go over to four words.

[Gurudeva chants four words of the Mahamantra at a time and devotees repeat]

'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna'. 'Krishna Krishna Hare Hare'.
'Hare Rama Hare Rama'. 'Rama Rama Hare Hare'.

Someone else is not chanting over there just sitting there. [Laughter].

Okay, now we will go to eight words.

[Gurudeva chants eight words of the Mahamantra at a time and devotees repeat]

'Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare'.
'Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare'.

Pretty good! [Applause]. Now the final step let us see who can do all sixteen words and graduate from this mantra class.

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Now we will sing it. Do we have any time? We got two minutes. Alright! So now we have taught you this mantra. If you chant this mantra very nicely then the rain will come in the proper quantity and you can grow very nice food and you can make an A in your course.

So does anyone have any questions? You had a comment.

Translator: He is asking we didn't introduce you, if we could introduce where you are coming from.

SDA: You can tell them. I am Sankarshan Das Adhikari. I am a spiritual master in the line of His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada. And I am on a world tour right now traveling to teach the science of Krishna all over the world. I am based in the USA. I am here now in Europe and then going on to India and then to Australia, Fiji and back to the USA. And in the next spring I will be coming back here to Riga and Latvia. And if you would like more information on the science of how you can perfect your consciousness then you can give us your contact information and we will stay in touch with you. If any of you can read English, I have a free e-course on the Internet about this science. It is being translated into Latvian also. [To the translator: Do you know the web page for that? Did you tell them the domain address? Yes.] If anyone wants, you can write it down. Give it to them very carefully. Okay then, our time is up.
