Room Conversation in Istanbul, Turkey

on April 26th ,2005

Srila Gurudeva: So the question is why not everything happens naturally, why should I have to make any endeavor to discipline myself to act in a certain way?

Gurumataji: Yeah, they say to follow this… guide with strong words.

Srila Gurudeva: So, ok. Let’s apply that philosophy then to earning a living, for example. Why should I endeavor to make money to pay my rent? Why not just let the money come naturally whenever it’s going to come. And the landlord comes and says, “Where is your rent money?” He says, “O when it comes naturally, I will give it to you.”

Srila Gurudeva: And he says, “Wow, wow what’s coming naturally to me is to ditch you from your apartment because you are not paying the rent”. “My dear Landlord, I am just doing what comes naturally.” “O, I am naturally evicting you because you are not paying the rent.”

Let’s say somebody wants to go college to read. Well “Whenever I feel like it’s natural to get up and go to class, I will go. But if it does not feel natural, I will just stay in my apartment.”

Gurumataji: That is very helpful but if they can just think about, “I am just going to sit and the food will go into my mouth and that’s when I will eat”.

Srila Gurudeva: I am not going to cook anything, you do.

Gurumataji: Yeah, that I will not do anything, I will just sit and everything will just go into my mouth naturally and then I will be satisfied.

Srila Gurudeva: There is a type of renunciation what the sadhus do that. That takes a very advanced soul. So, well they don’t even endeavor to get clothing, they just pass stool near just where they are sitting. They don’t even get up to attend to nature’s call. They don’t go anywhere. They don’t have an apartment. They don’t endeavor for food, even they pass stool near, they don’t move, they just stay in one place. Whatever comes, comes. If food comes it comes, they will live; if it doesn’t come, they will starve to death. That’s a type of renunciation.

That’s a very difficult type of renunciation to do. So one who really wants to just let everything come naturally, that’s what they have to do, that’s what they really have to do.  They can’t endeavor for clothing they can’t endeavor for a warm apartment during the winter. They have to just sit at one place and whatever comes, comes. It could be heat, it could be cold, it could be a tiger coming to eat you… You just take whatever comes. It’s called the method of the python. So that method is not very practical for the average person.

Gurumataji: It’s just as, when I say you have to put the food into your mouth, you can’t just close it.

Srila Gurudeva: Even then you have to pick the food up and put into his mouth.

Gurumataji: Yeah pick up, chew; yes… you have to chew.

Srila Gurudeva: So the real fact is that there are two natures. If one says, “I want to be natural”, the real fact is there are two natures. Either it’s the spiritual nature or the internal nature, and there is the material nature, the external nature. These are two different natures. So if you say, “I just want to act naturally”. Alright which nature do you want to act under then? Someone who is unaware of the spiritual nature will just act according to material nature. But the material nature will keep you entangled in birth, death, all these miseries birth after birth; birth, death, all these disease, lifetime after lifetime.

So an intelligent person discriminates between the spiritual nature and material nature. He chooses voluntarily to act within the spiritual nature. But because right now we are addicted to acting within the material nature, it requires some focus or some mental discipline and some physical discipline and some verbal discipline to re-train oneself how to act in terms of the spiritual nature. If you just want to go, even in material nature, discipline is required to be successful otherwise you will be a complete failure. You didn’t discipline yourself.

We see in America there are people, men who don’t want to discipline themselves and women, they just stand out on the sidewalk, on the street corner and beg. They live as beggars. At night they sleep in the bushes because they don’t want to discipline themselves. But still they have to discipline themselves to get up to the traffic light and beg for money. That also requires discipline. Long hard hours they stand. They are going up and down the cars, begging for money when people come to the stoplight. So even they have to discipline themselves because the money is not just going to come to them. Just like your businessman. You have to put energy into your business; otherwise it will be a failure, isn’t it? A complete failure. So if I have to put energy to be successful materially then do I not also have to put energy to become spiritually successful? Yes, it is required.

If I am thinking, “Wow! I have so many responsibilities to make my business successful, I don’t really have time for spiritual life.” Well, if that’s what you want then that’s alright. But at the time of death where will you be? You invested all your money in a bank account that will be closed by higher authorities. Wouldn’t that be a shame? Your whole life you put your money in the bank account. You say “its ok now” and sit. But the cashier will say, “Sorry, it’s a wrong account”. All that money is lost; you put it in the wrong account. So the fact is the body will get old, it will get sick and it will die. And all the energy we did running our business, working our job to maintain the body, it's lost energy. It’s just lost, it’s wasted because you can’t claim anything back. So therefore we should set aside sometime even if we have to make 100 dollars less per week from our business, it’s better to take a little time out in the morning to sit down with the chanting beads. In the beginning, at least take 15 to 20 minutes every day. You just sit down, before you do anything. Get up, take your bath, sit down and have a little place like here, near Krishna’s picture just chant:

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

It’s the time when it’s just you and God, nothing else. Forget about your business, forget about your body, just forget everything. This is the time when you have a personal meeting with Allah or God.

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

and then, after you have your morning meeting then you do your business. And actually the fact is that this material nature is being controlled by Krsna. A devotee can put more time in praying and less time into his business, and actually make more money from his business because those customers are all sent by Krsna anyway. They are all sent by Krsna.

Gentleman: I have this…. I have….

Srila Gurudeva: Do you have japa beads here? You can sell to the people? You have extras?

Adhiradhika: Not much, just 7 or 8.

Srila Gurudeva: Oh, that’s good. We brought a few also. But yeah, that’s nice. If you can chant, you can sit and chant this Hare Krsna mantra. That is my request, if you can chant this one round everyday. You are willing to do that? Alright, really good. So you have the beads? She will give you. She will supply the beads.

You need to give some donation, that’s a part of this… it’s a spiritual thing. You give something for the beads because we have to bring them from India. That way we can get more of them. We have to pay them. There is a businessman who sells the beads. So we pay the businessman. He is called the mala wala. So we pay the mala wala for the beads and then we bring them to Turkey. That way we can bring more. But that you can chant everyday. You will teach him how to use the beads? Yeah. Between the thumb and the second finger of the right hand.

Gentleman: Yeah.

Srila Gurudeva: Now the bead, you see, one bead, there are hundred and eight beads for chanting and there is one bead, which is on the end, which marks the end of the strand. So you begin just next to the end bead. You don’t chant on the end bead, just next to it. The end bead, there is a one with the string on it. You just start next to the end bead. You will chant, you will start

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

and you go to the second bead and do the same thing,

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

and the next bead

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

This way you come all the way round. Actually once you get accustomed to it you can do it in seven and a half minutes, five to seven and a half minutes per round. So it doesn’t take that long once you get into it .

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

This way you can really go into deep meditation on the sound vibration and then you come all the way around here and that’s called one round. In India they call it one mala, one round in English language. And then you can set a daily quota, well “everyday I will chant one round” and, you now agree to one round everyday.

So then when you are ready, you think, “well, this is really opening up my consciousness. I liked to meditate on Krsna, or God throughout the  day but now I feel much more strongly connected with Him throughout the entire day just because I did one round in the morning”. So then as you feel the inspiration, you can increase your own daily quota. You can double it to two malas a day. What we do, who are initiated followers of Hare Krsna, we have a vow of chanting 16 malas or rounds everyday. But you do not have to do that many because you are not initiated. But you can do whatever you do, you do at least, you stick to at least one round as you have promised me. From now for rest of your life you must do at least one round everyday. And then you can increase that as you feel the inspiration. Then Adhiradhika can tell me how you are coming. Sometime I am asking how you are doing. What is… tell me your name.

Gentleman: Ahmet.

Srila Gurudeva: Ahmed

Adhiradhika: Ahmed.

Srila Gurudeva: That’s A-h-m-e-d, Ahmed?

Gentleman: It’s ‘t’.

 Srila Gurudeva: Ahmet.

Gentleman: Yes. In Turkish language we spell it like that, Ah-met.

Srila Gurudeva: Ahmet.

Gentleman: Yeah.

Srila Gurudeva: A-h-met.

Gentleman: Yeah. This name is originally…

Srila Gurudeva: A-h-m-e-t.

Gentleman: Yeah.

Srila Gurudeva:  Ahmet, yeah.

Gentleman: This is Arabic name. In Arabic language, they say Ahmed.

Adhiradhika: Ahmed.

Gentleman: Yeah. Ahmed, they say. But in Turkish…

Adhiradhika: There is no ‘d’.

Srila Gurudeva: So Turkish, Turkish flavor.

Gentleman: Yeah.

Srila Gurudeva: Just like ‘t’ for Turkey so you have Ahmet.

Gentleman: Yeah, yeah.

Srila Gurudeva: Yeah.

Adhiradhika: And did know about our e-course.

Srila Gurudeva: Also I have one, I have regular things as sent on the Internet, even on email. You must have an email address.

Gentleman: Yes, I have.

Srila Gurudeva: Would you like to be on my free e-course, for you will get things emailed regularly from me, everyday ok?

Gentleman: Yeah.

Srila Gurudeva: We will add you to the e-course also. We actually send it in two formats everyday. You get it in text and in html. The reason we do that, some of the ISPs block the html but they allow the text version to come through but actually everyone prefers to get html because it’s easier to read. So actually you get it in both formats everyday. This is in case the ISP is blocking the html. Sometimes they might even block the text as well but there is a way. If that happens you can learn how you can also see it online. There is a place online where you can see our daily mailings as well. So anyway, there are any further questions?

Adhiradhika: And the more I feel the inspiration to chant comes, the more I learn about Krsna, about devotees; you will feel more and more taste.

Gentleman: Of course.

Srila Gurudeva: It’s an acquired taste. Just like some people, they become wine connoisseurs. In the beginning, a little child he never even tasted wine. The first time you taste wine is not very tasteful: ‘ugh’, but then people acquire a taste for wine and become a connoisseur of wine. They love it. So in the beginning, it requires taste; even that the taste is actually there within; it’s buried because we have been in the material nature for so long. But by disciplining yourself to chant that one, at least one mala or one round everyday, then you find that the taste awakens and gradually you become a connoisseur of Krsna Consciousness.

You chant everyday, your taste will increase and you will become eager to read more about it, to hear more about it. You might even go on a pilgrimage to India some day just to get in… Take a vacation from your business and go to Vrindavana in India, so you can just increase your taste so that as it grows on you find that it’s very, very... the more your taste grows, it becomes a more and more exciting thing. Because when you feel that connection throughout your entire day, you will feel that divine connection even more, it grows in you. What sort of business you do?

Gentleman:  Art business.

Srila Gurudeva: You paint them yourself or you are just wholesaler?

Gentleman: No, I am not painting. I am just selling.

Srila Gurudeva: You are just selling like a dealer. You have, it’s a retail or wholesale.

Gentleman: Wholesale sometimes.

Srila Gurudeva: You supply art stores with paintings.

Gentleman: I have some artist friends, they are painting and I am selling.

Srila Gurudeva: So mainly it’s retail. You have an art store where they sell their arts and you…O that’s good.

Gentleman: Yes.

Srila Gurudeva: You must have, you must have seen our Krishna art.

Gentleman: Yes.

Srila Gurudeva: Isn’t that beautiful?

Gentleman: Yeah, this is of course. I had to do, I wanted to do that business in Turkey, what’s called, also Ishwar as addressed, so we couldn’t do that.

Srila Gurudeva: You cannot?

Gentleman: I can but I couldn’t, I could not do that.

Srila Gurudeva: What is?

Adhiradhika: He could not do that.

Gentleman: Iswara, Krsna, Chaitanya…
