An Appeal for Your Help

On the order of his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, Sankarshan Prabhu has dedicated his life for the most urgent work of spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world. The more that Krishna consciousness spreads, the more that the suffering, scarcity, and hate on this planet will be replaced with bliss, abundance and love. This is a golden opportunity for us to do the highest good for all living beings and receive the special blessings of the Lord. Therefore we should, as much as possible, sacrifice our time, energy, and resources to assist Sankarshan Prabhu in his most important work. If you would like to help out to any extent, little or big, kindly inform Sankarshan Prabhu of your desire.

Favorable for Your Krishna Consciousness

As we go through life we are constantly having to make decisions whether to do this or that. The golden rule of thumb is always do what is favorable for your Krishna consciousness and to avoid that which is unfavorable for your Krishna consciousness. If you will always stick to this principle in all times, places, and circumstances, you are sure to achieve the ultimate success of going back home, back to Godhead when you leave your present body.

Question: Why Do Initiated Devotees Fall Down?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Sometimes we see that even initiated devotee fall down in their practice of Krishna consciousness. Why does this happen?

Your servant,

Yamunadevi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Inattentiveness

Spiritual life is like a razor's edge. If there is a little inattention while shaving with a straight edge razor, immediately there will be blood. Similarly, if we are not always careful and watchful in our execution of the principles of Krishna consciousness, we can fall down at any time even after initiation. Therefore the devotee is always vigilant to make sure that he never deviates from the principles of Krishna consciousness.

Submit to Krishna or Submit Your Resignation

The current leaders of the world are completely incompetent and unfit to be in their leadership positions. The only person who is qualified to be a leader is that person who is capable of delivering his dependents from the cycle of birth and death. Anyone in a leadership position who is not able to deliver his dependents from birth and death should immediately step down from his position or take training how to become qualified to save his dependents. If they are willing to take the training, we have Prabhupada's teachings with which we can perfectly enlighten them. If they are not interested, they should resign from their posts. So the choice is theirs: submit to Krishna or submit your resignation.

Question: How to Be Free of Anxiety?

Dear Guru Maharaja:

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have a few questions in my mind that require clarification.

Why do people worry about the future? We have to make plans about the future life, but most often plans are associated with anxiety. How to plan without anxiety?

If we plan services for Krishna, will we be in anxiety? Why?

Your humble servant,

Jeffrey

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: See Everything as Krishna's Arrangement

People worry about the future because they are not Krishna conscious. A Krishna conscious person never worries about the future. Rather he is very excited about the future because he knows that his future will unfold according to the amazing merciful arrangement of Lord Sri Krishna.

Planning service for Krishna is the cause of transcendental bliss. It is only when we make plans for sense gratification that we are in anxiety. Even if a devotee is forced by circumstances beyond his control to alter his plans, he takes everything as the perfect arrangement of Krishna. He tolerates what is beyond his control, takes command of what is within his control, and is intelligent enough to know the difference.

Your Personal Meeting with God

Every day you can personally connect with Krishna or God because He mercifully fully manifests Himself in the form of His name. Through loving devotion you can go deep into transcendental communion with Him every day while chanting:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

There is no reason to ever feel lonely ever again when you can directly associate with the Supreme Person at every minute.

Question: How to Handle Loneliness?

One thing that has been on my mind is that lately I look around me and I feel lonely. My friendships are changing as our interests are different and our focus is on different things and the focus is always about them. I notice the world around me and see so much time being wasted by people. It makes me sad and at times lonely. I see the stark differences all around and it's disconcerting. How should I handle this, as it upsets me?

Your servant,

C.S.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Connect with Krishna and His Devotees

It is good that you are seeing how empty is this material world and all of its activities. It is indeed a very lonely atmosphere because nobody connects with their true spiritual self within and with the true selves of others. Therefore is quite natural to feel lonely in this material world.

The ecstatic fact is that this aching loneliness is easily overcome by connecting with the supreme loneliness killers, Lord Krishna and His devotees. Learn how to experience the presence of Krishna at every moment through His names, His pastimes, His teachings, etc and you will never be lonely ever again. By connecting with Krishna you are automatically connected with all of His devotees because Krishna and all of His devotees are all always packed up tightly together brought together by the sublime potency of Krishna's name.

We've Been Waiting Since Time Immemorial

Since time immemorial we have been caught up in the cycle of birth and death repeatedly suffering unbearable miseries lifetime after lifetime. Deep within our hearts we have been desperately awaiting that day when someone will come and liberate us from this hopeless quagmire. But because our nature is to enjoy and because the suffering has been intolerable, we fool ourselves into thinking we are enjoying when actually we are in the most miserable of all situations. This is called maya-sukhaya or illusory happiness. But now by the causeless mercy of Lord Krishna, the greatest saintly teacher has descended from the spiritual world to save us. His name is His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. He has given us many volumes of the most practical enlightening books ever written in the history of the world and has started a movement known as the Krishna consciousness movement for those who want to take advantage of his teachings. If we will read his books and participate in his movement, we will become liberated from the cycle of birth and death, and we will regain our original transcendental identities in that supremely wonderful, sublime, and eternal abode known as the para-vyoma or the spiritual sky.

Question: Why Do Muslims Eat Meat?

If the purpose of all the religion is same, to love God, why do Muslims consume non-vegetarian food? On the festival of Id-ul-Fitr they eat male goats in the name of Islam. Please clear my doubt since this act of the Muslims produces hatred towards them.

Your humble servant,
Akhil G.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: They Do Not Know the Meaning of Religion.

Nowadays most people in all faiths who claim to be religious are actually irreligious. They simply use their religious designation as a mask to hide their sinfulness. Although they profess religion, they are not truly religious. Hence they engage in all kinds of sinful activities, even in the name of religion. If you love someone, you will not kill and eat his children. Therefore, meat eaters cannot be genuine lovers of God.

We should not hate anyone because of their ignorance. Most people are actually good. Simply they have been grossly misguided. Therefore we should manifest love for them by enlightening them in the transcendental process of Krishna consciousness. In this way they can become true lovers of God. Lord Caitanya has ordered us to tell everyone we meet about Krishna. Therefore we should make everyone in the world Krishna conscious.

The Perfection of Healing

Healing practitioners are everywhere, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, acupuncturists, herbalists, chiropractors, etc. But out of these thousands and millions of healers all over the world hardly anyone knows what is perfection of healing, bringing the self back into a state of perfect harmony with the Supreme Self. Therefore in spite of millions and billions of dollars being spent every year on health care we are still a global community of people afflicted with deluge of health problems. Of course just as death cannot be eliminated, disease also cannot be eliminated. Both death and disease are inseparable factors of the material nature. But through Krishna consciousness, the ultimate healing system, one can regain one's original transcendental body which is not subject to birth, death, old age, and disease. When the spiritual body is reactivated, its covering, the material body, naturally lives longer in a much healthier condition.

So if you want to be healthy, the first thing you need to do is create the best possible foundation for excellent health. You need to realize that you are not your body, that you are the eternal spirit-soul servant of God. Reconnect with Krishna today through the transcendental process of meditating on His sound incarnation:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Question: Chanting Japa While Listening to Music?

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Is it correct for a person to chant rounds on japa mala beads while listening to and in tune with a Kirtan playing on an audio CD player?

Regards,

Sunil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Krishna's Sweet Name Does Not Need Music to Be Sweet

If you were going for a job interview at a company where you really wanted to get a position, would you be listening to some music on an audio CD player during the interview? Of course not. You would be 100% tuned into the person who was interviewing you, trying to make the best impression on him so that you could be offered a position in the company. Similarly when you chant Hare Krishna you are personally meeting with Krishna in the form of your japa trying to convince Him by your sincere chanting that you are a worthy candidate for being admitted into His transcendental abode. If you can't even absorb your mind fully in your japa, needing to prop up your meditation with some music, you are not in the proper consciousness to surrender to Krishna. Therefore if you are serious about going back to Godhead, you must also become serious about fully absorbing your consciousness in Krishna in the form of His holy name as it is manifested in your japa.

If We Are Ever Going to Have World Peace

If we are ever going to have a peaceful war-free, terror-free world, we must stop terrorizing the animals. As long as we torture and terrorize these innocent creatures we must accept the karmic reaction of ourselves being tortured and terrorized. Therefore it is absolutely required for world peace that every government throughout the world must now criminalize the slaughterhouses. The heinous, atrocious murder of the poor animals must immediately be stopped. If this is not done, what lies ahead for the sinful cow-killing civilization is indeed very dark and inauspicious. Therefore out of kindness upon our fellow human beings we must convince them to stop murdering the innocent animals.

Question: Should a Devotee Aspire for Samadhi?

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

All glories to Guru and Gauranga.

Should a devotee aspire for the samadhi stage as mentioned in the Bhagavad-gita? Are pure devotees like you in samadhi stage?

Regards,

Vikram M.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Absolutely

Srila Prabhupada describes samadhi as follows:

"When the mind is fully absorbed in Krishna consciousness, it is said to be in samadhi, or trance." This is absolutely something that a devotee should aspire for, to always have his mind fixed in Krishna consciousness.

Even though the spiritual master is absorbed 24 hours daily in Krishna consciousness, he humbly thinks himself as someone who is not Krishna conscious. We see an example of this wonderful humility in Srila Prabhupada in these words that he wrote when he first arrived in the USA in 1965:

"I have no devotion, nor do I have any knowledge, but I have strong faith in the holy name of Krishna. I have been designated as Bhaktivedanta, and now, if You like, You can fulfill the real purport of Bhaktivedanta."

Recognizing and Practicing the World Religion

There is only one religion in the world. That religion is to love God, and it is the world religion. Every religious man will agree that the goal of religion is to love God. So why then do we have so many different religions in the world with people hating each other and killing each other in the name of religion? This is due to a sectarian misunderstanding of what is actual religion. Just as there is only one sun in the sky although it has hundreds of different names according to the different languages of the world, in a similar way even though there are many different names of God according to the different languages of the world, there is only one Supreme Being, who is the source of all existence. Enough is enough. It's time to end all of this divisiveness. The time has come to lay aside all petty sectarianism and celebrate the universal nature of religion. Real religion brings everyone together because we are all children of the same father. It is only pseudo, cheating religion which divides us. Practicing real religion is not difficult. One simply to has to every day chant the holy names of God and live a saintly life free from illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. In this way he will revive his dormant love of God and become spiritually perfect.

Question: Why Worship Form of Formless God?

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances

All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his followers.

I would like to know how to answer the question posed by a Muslim:

Why do you worship the form of God in the temple when God is formless?

Joy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: God isn't Formless. His Form is Unlimited.

If a Muslim asks such a question, he is not learned in his own scripture, the Qur'an clearly states as follows::

Wa lillaahil - Mashriqu wal-Magrib: Fa- 'aynamaa
tu-walluu fa-samma Wajhul-laah

"To Allah belong the East and the West,
and wherever you turn there is Allah's face."

--Qur'an 2.115

That Allah or God has a face means that He has a form because someone who is formless must also be faceless. God's form-possessing nature is also confirmed in the Bible and in the Vedic scriptures.

Besides a wealth of scriptural evidence establishing that God has a form, we can also understand through logic that God must have a form. The logic is very simple: We cannot exceed God in any way. Therefore we cannot possess something that He does not possess. It's not that we can have a form and He cannot. He must also have form. The difference is that His form is unlimited while our forms are limited. His form is the source of everything, and our forms come from His form.

"I Have Spent My Life Uselessly."

In the powerful, enlightening devotional songs of the great Vaisnava acharya, Srila Narottam Das Thakur, we find the sweet, beautiful sentiment of transcendental lamentation. Even though Narottam Das is on the highest level of pure Krishna bhakti, in his song Iṣṭa-deve Vij˝apti (Prayer to One's Beloved Lord) he humbly presents himself as someone who is completely bereft of Krishna consciousness:

"hari hari! bifale janama goṅāinu
manuṣya-janama pāiyā, rādhā-kṛṣṇa nā bhajiyā,
jāniyā śuniyā biṣa khāinu

"O Lord Hari, I have spent my life uselessly.
Having obtained a human birth and having not worshiped Radha and Krishna,
I have knowingly drunk poison.

"golokera prema-dhana, hari-nāma-saṅkīrtana,
rati nā janmilo kene tāy
saṁsāra-biṣānale, dibā-niśi hiyā jwale,
jurāite nā koinu upāy

"The treasure of divine love in Goloka Vrịndavan has descended
as the congregational chanting of Lord Hari's holy names.
Why did my attraction for that chanting never come about?
Day and night my heart burns from the fire of the poison of worldliness,
and I have not taken the means to relieve it.

"brajendra-nandana jei, śacī-suta hoilo sei,
balarāma hoilo nitāi
dīna-hīna jata chilo, hari-nāme uddhārilo,
tāra śākṣī jagāi mādhāi

"Lord Krishna, who is the son of the King of Vraja, became the son of Saci
(Lord Caitanya), and Balarama became Nitai.
The holy name delivered all those souls who were lowly and wretched.
The two sinners Jagai and Madhai are evidence of this.

"hā hā prabhu nanda-suta, vṛṣabhānu-sutā-juta,
koruṇā karoho ei-bāro
narottama-dāsa koy, nā ṭheliho rāṅgā pāy,
tomā bine ke āche āmāra

"O Lord Krishna, son of Nanda, accompanied by the daughter of Vrishabhanu,
please be merciful to me now.
Narottam Dasa says, 'O Lord, please do not push me away from Your reddish lotus feet,
for who is my beloved except for You?'"

Srila Prabhupada is very fond of this song. He sang it often and referred to it often. This is song, if sung feelingly, will draw us closer and closer to Krishna.

Question: How to Do Bhakti in this Fast-Paced Life?

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his followers.

How can a grihasta (married) couple do full surrender in this fast-going life?

Simran

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Offer Everything to the Supreme Owner

By seeing everything that you own as the property of Krishna and engaging it all in His service, you can become a pure devotee of Krishna even in a fast-paced, modern-day life. Just consider how fast-going Arjuna must have been on the battlefield of Kurukshetra to defeat all of the enemy soldiers. Plus you must set aside quality time every day, preferably in the morning, to meditatively chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra on japa mala beads. Eat only Krishna prasadam (food offered with love and devotion to Lord Sri Krishna), and strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. In this way you can relish the sweetest happiness of pure Krishna bhakti in this life and attain the supreme destination, Goloka Vrindavan, upon leaving your body.

Giving Bewilderment the Boot

Let's face it. The material energy is bewildering. To be stuck in a body that is getting old and dying is not fun. Plus on all sides we are surrounded by a chaotic world where we never know what is going to happen next. So how do we keep a peaceful, cool head in the midst of all this madness? It's very simple. You just have to have complete faith in Krishna that everything happening to you is for your ultimate benefit, that Krishna will never let you down, that He is your ultimate well-wisher, your best friend in all times, places, and circumstances. Never think that Krishna is letting you down or not being fair with you. Cultivate a vision that His loving hand is blessing you at every minute. Whether things seem good or bad, always have faith that Krishna is doing everything for your ultimate welfare, that He is always looking out for you like a loving father with your highest self-interest in mind. If you seriously cultivate this vision, you will never be bewildered even in the midst of the most apparently devastating reverse situations.

God is not so cheap that He reveals Himself to anybody or everybody. If even to meet a great person in this world one requires a special qualification, we can imagine how much one must be qualified to see God. If you want to see God, you must first qualify yourself by fully surrendering yourself at His lotus feet. Tortured by Incompetent, Decadent Leaders

The world civilization is at the present moment being very much tortured and misled by decadent, incompetent leaders who cannot control their senses. Unless one can control his senses by keeping them always engaged in the service of the Lord, he is not qualified to take any kind of leadership position within the society. For the welfare of the human society there is an urgent need for there to arise now a class of persons who are able to keep their senses 24 hours daily absorbed in the service of God. Only such persons are qualified to lead us. Without such leadership the entire planet Earth will simply degenerate into deeper and darker depravity over the course of time. This is what is happening now. So things have to now change dramatically if there is going to be any scope for ongoing peace, happiness, and prosperity on this planet. Conquering Over Stress of this Material World

The starting point for conquering over stress in this material world is to always remember that this material world is a mere shadow of the original reality, the all-blissful spiritual world. All the stress of material existence is happening due to bodily consciousness, the false concept that I am this body. So as soon as you assert the non-material existence of the self, you are on your way to conquering over the stress of material existence. And then when you strictly adopt the principles of bhakti yoga, the science of transcending your body and regaining your eternal spiritual existence, all the stress of material existence will gradually fade away until it reduces down to the point of nil. The bhakti yoga science begins with chanting and hearing the transcendental glories of the name, fame, form, pastimes, teachings, etc. of Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So, do yourself the ultimate favor. Begin absorbing your consciousness in Krishna today. Your stress will vanish into oblivion.

Question: Did God Create Us?

Did Krishna create the jiva soul (atma)? Bhagavad-gita 2.12 says soul was never created. So is God only a maintainer?

Is there a difference and gradation between Vaikuntha and Goloka Vrindavan? All the previous acharyas like Shankara, Ramanuja, and Madhva have talked about Vaikuntha. I have heard about Goloka Vrindavan only in ISKCON.

Hari Bol!
Jai

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: We Are His Eternal Creations/Emanations

You are misquoting Bhagavad-gita 2.12. Krishna does not say that the soul is not created. He says that the soul is eternally existing. That is something different. Krishna says in Bhagavad-gita 10.8 that everything is emanating from Him. Therefore we can understand that the souls are the eternal creations or emanations of the Lord. Accepting the truth of both statements, it is very easy to understand that Krishna is eternally emanating the souls from Himself. So, the jivas, the souls, are not created by God at a certain point in time. They are eternally existing as emanations or creations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

It is not that only the devotees in ISKCON talk about Goloka Vrindavan. Millions of years ago at the beginning of universe Lord Brahma revealed the glories of Goloka Vrindavan in the Brahma Samhita as the topmost planet in the spiritual sky:

goloka-nāmni nija-dhāmni tale ca tasya
devi maheśa-hari-dhāmasu teṣu teṣu
te te prabhāva-nicayā vihitāś ca yena
govindam ādi-puruṣaṁ tam ahaṁ bhajāmi

"Lowest of all is located Devi-dhama [mundane world], next above it is Mahesa-dhama [abode of Mahesa]; above Mahesa-dhama is placed Hari-dhama [Vaikuntha, the abode of Hari] and above them all is located Krishna's own realm named Goloka. I adore the primeval Lord Govinda, who has allotted their respective authorities to the rulers of those graded realms."

Although nothing compares to the excitement and adventure of being out there circling the globe on a multi-continent lecture tour, it is undoubtedly very beneficial for our good health and longevity to be back from the road for some time getting a more balanced, regulated diet and sleeping/waking pattern. It is something like a mountain climber coming down from the peak to spend some time at the base camp in preparation for his next climb. Of course, it is not that our Krishna conscious outreach program stops when we are back here at Bhaktivedanta Ashram. There are eight lectures given by my wife and I here every week, plus I have still have "Thought for Day" and the weekly lesson to write and a mountain of correspondence to respond to. (Since 2003 I have sent out 60,000 personal responses to emails that I have received.) Our next tour begins after Gaura Purnima on March 16 and will conclude on June 27. There is lot of work to do to get ready for Gaura Purnima and our next world tour. This is Srila Prabhupada's mercy to keep us constantly engaged around the clock in Krishna's service.

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have a question which a friend asked me. If a pregnant mother comes to know that the baby in her womb has some abnormality, will it be still sinful to abort the baby? Isn't it better to abort the child than seeing the child suffer in this material world?

Thank you.

Your humble servant,

Chandra Chaitanya Das

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Does an Abnormal Person Want to Die?

If you were suffering from an abnormality, would you like us to kill you? For example, let's say that you were blind or lame. Would you like us to kill you? Ask any blind man if he would like to be put to death to be relieved of the misery of being a blind man. Will he volunteer, "Yes. Please kill me."?

Abortion does not free the child from suffering. To abort the child is to increase his suffering. If you want to free the child from suffering, let him take birth and raise him in Krishna consciousness. In this way he will become free from all suffering for all of eternity.

Please advise me which rasa (relationship) with Krishna I should seek. This is based on following excerpt written in Srila Prabhupada's purport to Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 4, Text 11:

"In the transcendental world also, Krishna reciprocates with His pure devotees in the transcendental attitude, just as the devotee wants Him. One devotee may want Krishna as supreme master, another as his personal friend, another as his son, and still another as his lover. Krishna rewards all the devotees equally, according to their different intensities of love for Him."

Should I choose the rasa which is the most rewarding? In other words is there an order between different love intensities associated to the following relationships:-supreme master, personal friend, son, lover?

Can I have all of the above relationships? Thus, based on day and time of my need I can experience Krishna differently? You can tell I am greedy, but frankly I am looking for a comprehensive return.

Thanks,

Vivek

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: His Eternal, Fully Surrendered Servant

You are asking if you should choose the relationship which is most rewarding after Srila Prabhupada has stated that he rewards all of his devotees equally. You need to read Srila Prabhupada's purports more carefully.

As long as one is still under the influence of the three modes of material nature there is no question of choosing one's rasa or relationship with Krishna. Even in the liberated state when one is completely free from the modes of nature there is no question of choosing one's rasa because one's rasa is already existing eternally. When one becomes a 100% pure devotee that rasa or relationship with Krishna is automatically revealed to him.

Any attempt of the neophyte devotee to choose a particular rasa is detrimental for the actual realization of his rasa. According the authoritative statement of Srila Rupa Goswami, the method for factually realizing one's rasa is to fully surrender oneself at the lotus feet of the bona fide spiritual and execute the regulative principles of sadhana bhakti under his orders. In this way, one's heart will become completely purified in due course of time, and he will automatically realize his rasa. This stage of spiritual realization is called svarupa-siddhi, the perfection of realizing one's eternal relationship with Krishna.

The pure devotee's mood is not, "What I can get out of my relationship with Krishna?". His mood is, "What can I give to Krishna?". As long as one is thinking about what he can get from Krishna, he is not on the platform of pure bhakti and he will not be able to realize what is his svarupa, his eternal relationship with Krishna.

So the final conclusion is that you should simply desire to be the completely sold out servant of Krishna. In other words, you should be unconditionally willing to serve Him in any way that the Lord wants you to serve Him. This full surrender at His lotus feet will naturally, gradually bring you to perfectional stage of svarupa-siddhi, in which you will automatically realize your eternal relationship with Lord Sri Krishna in any one of five primary rasas: adoring Krishna as the sublime great, serving Krishna as one's supreme master, enjoying Krishna as one's personal friend, taking Krishna as one's son, or relishing Krishna as one's lover.

Keep Krishna's Message As It Is. Don't Spoil It.

Krishna's message in its original pure form as it was spoken to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra is fully powerful for delivering the sincere follower back to home, back to Godhead. Unfortunately practically every edition of the Bhagavad-gita tampers with the words of Krishna. In the name of Krishna the rascal commentators present a so-called Bhagavad-gita which is completely different from the actual Bhagavad-gita and is therefore simply rubbish. Instead of presenting that the ultimate goal of life is to surrender to Krishna, they say that life's ultimate goal is to become Krishna. It is this desire to become Krishna that brought us here to this material world in the first place. And they have the outrageous audacity to teach that one should desire to become Krishna in order to get delivered from this material world. Instead of presenting the truth, they are presenting that which is completely opposite from the truth. If they want to present their nonsense theories, that is their business. But they should not do so and call it the Bhagavad-gita. In this way they are committing the greatest crime and the greatest violence upon the human society.

On 17 December 1973 in Los Angeles Srila Prabhupada gave this order to his disciples, "Become guru and deliver the whole world." Considering the current increasingly degraded world situation, this seems to be an impossible to fulfill order. But yet we hear in the Bhagavad-gita that wherever Krishna and Arjuna are present there will certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power, and morality. Therefore if we can be pure enough in our Krishna consciousness to solidly connect with Krishna at every moment, we will be experience amazing victories in our humble attempt to make the entire world Krishna consciousness.

Question: Krishna Consciousness and Nonviolence?

Dear Spiritual Master,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Why is nonviolence not included as one of the pillars of pious activities, like Lord Buddha's first teaching of nonviolence and the Biblical teaching, "Thou shall not kill."?

Sujata

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Ignorance of the Soul is the Worst Violence

Krishna does teach the principle of nonviolence. You need to study the Bhagavad-gita more carefully. You will find nonviolence taught as a principle in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 13, Text 8. In his purport to this verse Srila Prabhupada explains as follows the true meaning of nonviolence:

"Nonviolence is generally taken to mean not killing or destroying the body, but actually nonviolence means not to put others into distress. People in general are trapped by ignorance in the material concept of life, and they perpetually suffer material pains. So unless one elevates people to spiritual knowledge, one is practicing violence. One should try his best to distribute real knowledge to the people, so that they may become enlightened and leave this material entanglement. That is nonviolence."

So nonviolence goes far beyond simply committing violence to the body. The greatest violence one can commit is violence to the soul by keeping a person in ignorance of his spiritual identity as the eternal spirit-soul servant of Krishna. This is the worst form of violence, and this is now going on everywhere all over the world. Therefore it is the mission of the Krishna consciousness to put a stop this violence.

The Utmost Urgency of Our Mission

Lord Caitanya has descended with the mission of delivering all the fallen, conditioned souls of this material world back to their original home in the spiritual world. By His divine mercy everyone throughout this entire universe can become peaceful and happy. Unfortunately due to their being so much misguided by foolish, materialistic leaders, the entire world population is at the present moment plunged into an ocean of illusion and anxiety. Even though they think themselves satisfied by temporary, illusory pleasure, the real fact is that no one is actually happy in this material world. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is of the utmost urgency for bringing genuine sanity and happiness to a world that is becoming more and more bewildered with each passing day. This mission has now been entrusted to ISKCON, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Therefore, if the world leaders will now co-operate with ISKCON, a new era of peace and prosperity will manifest in every town and village throughout the entire world.

Tulasi devi is very dear to Krishna. And every devotee has Tulasi devi in the form of the tulasi plant in his/her home. We know every plant has individual soul too. Does this mean that we have so many Tulasi devi souls in every home or is it the same soul in every plant?

Kindly enlighten me.

Answer: She is One Soul Appearing in Many Plants

A disciple named Vidya dasi asked Srila Prabhupada, "Is each tulasi a separate jiva soul or an expansion of one pure devotee?" He answered, "Tulasi is one devotee who appears wherever there is devotion to Krishna."

So she is one soul who simultaneously appears in many plants wherever there is devotion to Krishna.

Reflections on an Amazing Lecture Tour

We are now concluding our second around-the-world lecture tour for 2011. It was the most wonderful, enlivening transcendental experience. I lectured on the science of Krishna consciousness and chanted Hare Krishna kirtan in the following fifteen countries: the United Kingdom, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Australia, Argentina, Chile, and the USA. To experience first hand how all over the world people are seriously taking up the pathway of Krishna consciousness and to be allowed the privilege of being able to encourage them in this, is the greatest blessing I could ever imagine. I pray to be eternally engaged in serving the devotees like this.

Now we are taking a couple of months off the road until after Gaura Purnima when we embark on our Spring 2012 around-the-world lecture tour. My thanks to all the devotees who helped and facilitated us all over the world in so many ways with accommodations, prasadam, transportation and many, many speaking opportunities. And my special thanks to my devoted wife, Her Grace Srimati Vishnupriya devi dasi, who tolerated all the austerities of living on the road to accompany me on this tour and who blessed me constantly with the best Krishna conscious association.

Question: The Sevenfold Universal Coverings

My beloved master, Hare Krishna!

Please accept my respectful obeisances.

I know that there are sevenfold coverings covering the material universe. My question is that does each and every material universe have these sevenfold coverings, or are these coverings only after the last material universe? Although my prime interest is to go beyond these coverings and enter the inexplicably amazing spiritual sky, but just for knowledge I would like to know this.

Your student

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Each Universe Has the Seven Coverings

Each universe has its own coverings. Srila Prabhupada describes this in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 6.16.37:

"The first covering is earth, the second is water, the third is fire, the fourth is air, the fifth is sky, the sixth is the total material energy, and the seventh is the false ego. Beginning with the covering of earth, each covering is ten times greater than the previous one. Thus we can only imagine how great each universe is, and there are many millions of universes."

The Meditation of a Krishna Conscious Being

Srila Prabhupada so wonderfully explains in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 4.12.36 as follows:

"A Krishna conscious being is always engaged in planning how to take all of suffering humanity back home, back to Godhead. Even if one is not successful in reclaiming all the fallen souls back to Godhead, still, because he is Krishna conscious, his path to Vaikunthaloka is open. He personally becomes qualified to enter the Vaikunthalokas, and if anyone follows such a devotee, he also enters into Vaikunthaloka."

This is so profound and so sublime. Simply by being compassionate upon the suffering souls of this material world by always endeavoring to bless them with this sublime ultimate self-realization process of Krishna consciousness, the devotee becomes more and more dear to Krishna, who then blesses him with pure devotional service thus enabling and qualifying him for going back to home, back to Godhead.

Question: How to See Material Success and Failure?

Gurudeva,

How should one see material failures in one's life, and how should one see material successes in one's life? Does one need both in one's life? What is more important?

Pranoy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Engage Them Equally in Krishna's Service

One should see both material success and material failure with an equal mind because both are the results of our past activities. Past pious activities produce material success and past impious activities produce material failure. Because everyone has a combination of pious and impious activities, everyone will suffer and enjoy a combination of material success and failure. Neither is more important than the other. The important thing is to see that both are coming by the mercy of Krishna and that either in material failure or success we should surrender unto Lord Krishna offering Him whatever we have in His service. In this way we can equally utilize both material success and material failure as springboards for attaining the ultimate success of Krishna consciousness.

Mystical Potency of Srila Prabhupada's Books

The books of His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada are the most amazing and comprehensible presentation of the Vedic wisdom ever made available to the human society in the history of the universe. By the divine potency of his books the entire world is being inundated in a tidal wave of bhakti, which will bless the human society for at least 10,000 years. Even now the millions and millions of his books that have been distributed all over the world in so many different languages are having a powerful potency to hold off the debilitating and destabilizing effects of the Age of Kali. The efforts of the world's current political leaders to solve the world's problems are not successful because they do not understand the root cause of all the problems. Instead of solving the problems, their so-called solutions are actually making the situation worse and worse. Therefore we are making this urgent appeal to all of the world's leaders in all spheres of human activity to study, follow, and implement the teachings of Srila Prabhupada as the guiding principle for their lives and for the entire human society. This will bring in a new era of peace and prosperity to the ever more distraught human society.

Question: Why No Meat Eating in Bhakti Yoga?

Your Grace:

I assisted in your recent 2012 conference last Tuesday night in Rancagua, Chile, and I have several questions. One of them has been very much on my mind: What are the benefits of eating no meat at all for the one who is trying to practice bhakti yoga?

Francisco

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: One Cannot Eat the Children of His Beloved.

Krishna prescribes in the Bhagavad-gita that we should only eat the foods that we first offer to Him. And He also prescribes that we should only offer Him vegetarian foods. Therefore to be a devotee of Krishna means that one cannot eat meat.

It is also a matter of common sense. For those who want to awaken the dormant love of God within their hearts, to give up meat eating is absolutely essential because the animals are God's dear children. How can we love someone when we eat their dear children? It is not possible. If we truly love someone, we will not eat his children. If we love him, we will always respect and honor his children.

Is the World Going to End in 2012?

There are many doomsday would-be prophets who claim that according to the calendar of the Mayan Indians the world will end on 21 December 2012. The rumored 2012 Armageddon has become so popular that even a Hollywood movie has been made depicting the complete destruction of the world civilization in 2012. But what the naysayers fail to note is that even though the Mayan writings describe 21 December 2012 as the last day of their current time cycle, there are also dates mentioned in the Mayan writings of times far beyond 2012 such as a mention of the year 4772. In other words, 21 December 2012 is definitely not the calamitous end that so many are claiming that it is. The Vedic calendar authoritatively confirms that we have another 155 trillions years to go before this universe is destroyed by being inhaled into the body of Mahavishnu. If you chant Hare Krishna, you will be in Krishnaloka at that time. You won't have to worry about being sucked into Mahavishnu.

Question: What is Nirakar Philosophy?

I am very confused. One of my college friends goes to a satsang program of nirakarvadis, those who accept nirakar philosophy. He told me that they can show God in every human body and that we ISKCON devotees are just doing devotion, but cannot see God in our whole life.

Ashwini

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: A False Philosophy of a Formless God

The Nirakarvadis have a false conception that God is the impersonal, formless oneness. They are also known as impersonalists or Mayavadis, those who hold to the principle that the form of God is maya or illusion. They deny God's form, personality, and potencies. Therefore in a round about tricky way they are simply presenting atheism. They say that they believe in God, but then they say that God cannot see or be seen, cannot hear or be heard, that cannot speak, cannot move, cannot eat etc. In short they completely deny Him the ability to do anything. Therefore their declaration that they can show God in every human body is false. They cannot show you God anywhere because they have not realized what is the actual nature and identity of God.

If you want to see God, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, you can do so easily. All you have to do is purify your consciousness by regularly chanting His holy names on a daily basis. In this way you will attract the attention of the Supreme Lord, who will personally reveal Himself to you when you heart becomes free from all material contamination.

Because we are terrorizing the animals in these slaughterhouses, as a karmic reaction we are now being terrorized in so many ways. Increased security will not stop the terror. The only solution is that we must now stop terrorizing these innocent creatures. If we will do so, the entire world will become peaceful. Answer: We Exist to Expand God's Pleasure

There is no question of whether God exists or not, because if God did not exist, nothing would exist. In other words, since nothing comes out of nothing, our existence proves that God exists. God exists for the sheer pleasure of existing, and He expands all of us from Himself for the purpose of increasing His enjoyment unlimitedly through having loving relationships with each and every one of us. Attain God's Kingdom During Your Present Life

One does not have to wait for death to enter into the kingdom of God. If one becomes a pure chanter of the holy names of God, he can actually enter into the kingdom of God even within his present body. This is described as follows by Srila Prabhupada in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 2nd Canto, Chapter 2, Text 30:

"The first stage is the offensive chanting of the holy name, and the second is the reflective stage of chanting the holy name. The third stage is the offenseless chanting of the holy name of the Lord. In the second stage only, the stage of reflection, between the offensive and offenseless stages, one automatically attains the stage of emancipation. And in the offenseless stage, one actually enters into the kingdom of God, although physically he may apparently be within the material world. "

So we don't have to wait for death to enter into the kingdom of God. We simply have to master the art of chanting the holy names of God without any offense.

The Meaning of "No Illicit Sex"

To fully connect with Krishna or God requires that one give up in overindulgence of the senses. One is allotted as his quota whatever sense gratification is required for good health and vitality and not beyond that. Overindulgence of the senses forces the consciousness of the spiritual aspirant to remain locked on the bodily platform, which keeps him bound up tightly in the cycle of birth and death. This is why those who take initiation from the bona fide spiritual master vow to abstain from illicit sex life. This means that if they are married they will have sex no more than once in a month when they are trying to produce a child and when they are not trying to have a child they will completely abstain from sexual intercourse. Those devotees who are not married totally abstain from sex. In this way one can focus his energy on Krishna instead of on material sense gratification and can enter eternally into the sublime, sweet happiness of Krishna consciousness, which is far superior to the pleasure derived from sense gratification.

Answer: Krishna is Family. Don't Neglect Him.

I understand that you have to make time for your family. So why are you neglecting your father, Krishna? You must give part of your family time to Him. To do that you must go to bed a little earlier so that you can get up earlier in the morning and chant the Hare Krishna mantra on your japa beads before you take your breakfast. If you make this small step towards Krishna, He will take ten steps towards you, and your spiritual life will take root and expand eventually to the perfectional stage.

The Recipe for Ultimate Success

The key to reviving your lost loving relationship with Krishna or God is simply to follow the instructions that He gives in the Bhagavad-gita. Just as to bake some banana bread you must carefully follow the recipe given in the cookbook in order to get proper banana bread, in a similar way if you will simply do exactly what Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita, you will experience the most amazing transformation of entering in the spiritual world within your heart even while you externally act dutifully and successfully in the material world.

Question: How to Think of Krishna Always?

Dear Sri Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My question is about my mind. I find it very difficult to control it.

When I sing kirtan at the temple with other devotees or see Krishna photos I literally start crying and unable to control. I think to myself as to why I am not becoming a 100% devotee of Krishna (thinking about Him always). But in the next hour when I come back home from the temple I start thinking about my mundane activities.

Please guide me in controlling my mind and thinking about Krishna always.

Answer: For Now Focus on Attaining the Nistha Stage

It is natural for a neophyte devotee to have a wavering mind that is sometimes absorbed in Krishna consciousness and sometimes in mundane nonsense. What you need to focus on for now is how to come to the nistha stage of bhakti in which your meditation on Krishna is hardly interrupted. To get to the nistha stage you need to chant 16 rounds daily of the Hare Krishna mantra and strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. Then you need to take initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and under his guidance become free from all material contamination. In this way you will come to stage of firm faith or nistha in which your mind is free from the from the influence of the modes of passion and ignorance and is almost always fixed nicely in Krishna consciousness. Of course from that point there are even higher stages. But the attainment of nistha is what you need do focus on for now.

Ecstatic Rebirth in Australia

31 December 2011--Today in Melbourne, Australia I gave diksha, spiritual initiation, to six devotees. Spiritual initiation is the third step on the pathway to spiritual perfection. First one has faith. Then he associates with devotees. When he becomes convinced that he must fully surrender to Lord Krishna, he then accepts initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and learns from him the science of how to completely surrender to Krishna. Then he cleans the dirt out of his heart and becomes a solidly fixed devotee. After this he reaches the stage where he can relish all the activities of devotional service twenty four hours daily and becomes completely attached to Krishna. Then spiritual ecstasy awakens within his heart and he develops pure love of God. To attain this perfectional stage one must accept initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and faithfully follow his instructions. So we are very happy that these six candidates have now fully dedicated themselves to the process of spiritual awakening.

Question: Can I Go Back to Godhead After this Life?

I've heard that it is very difficult to go back to Godhead and that it takes many lifetimes to finally get there. My question is: If we are very serious, is it possible to go back to Godhead after this lifetime?

Daniel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Why Wait That Long?

Why wait until after this lifetime. You can become a fully liberated soul who is able to see Krishna and reciprocate with Him constantly even during the present duration of life.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes:

"Generally liberation takes place after one gives up this body, but one who lives according to the example of Prithu Maharaja is liberated even in this lifetime."--from purport to SB 4.22.51
