An Appeal for Your Help

On the order of his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, Sankarshan Prabhu has dedicated his life for the most urgent work of spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world. The more that Krishna consciousness spreads, the more that the suffering, scarcity, and hate on this planet will be replaced with bliss, abundance and love. This is a golden opportunity for us to do the highest good for all living beings and receive the special blessings of the Lord. Therefore we should, as much as possible, sacrifice our time, energy, and resources to assist Sankarshan Prabhu in his most important work. If you would like to help out to any extent, little or big, kindly inform Sankarshan Prabhu of your desire.

How to Taste the Bliss of Krishna Consciousness

If we want to taste the bliss of Krishna consciousness, we must not mechanically chant and serve. Instead we should chant and serve with feeling. What is the difference? It's a matter of common sense. We can immediately tell the difference in the way that others deal with us. If someone deals with us in a cold, mechanical, impersonal way, we do not like it. On the other hand, if someone deals with us in a loving, kind-hearted, friendly way, we feel energized and enthused. So we have to remember that Krishna or God is a real person who has feelings too. He is very pleased when we lovingly serve Him and chant His names. And He is displeased when we ignore Him or chant His name or serve Him in a disinterested, impersonal, cold-hearted way. When we please Him we will taste the sweetest pleasure. And when we do not please Him, we are not able to experience genuine happiness. Therefore if we are intelligent, we will always try to please Krishna or God by chanting His names and serving Him in a loving, full-of-feeling way.

Question: How to Serve Guru in Separation?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
Bless me and my family.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Gurudeva, how to serve our spiritual master who we canít see every day?

Does water offered to Krishna also become prasadam? And can such water make a person Krishna conscious? If so, how?

Yamuna devi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Serve His Vibrational Presence

There are two forms of the spiritual master: his physical presence and his vibrational presence, his instructions. If you will accept the spiritual master's instructions as your life and soul, you will never be separated from him even for a moment because you will always feel his presence within your heart and you will always be guided and inspired by him in the form of his vibrational presence.

When water is offered to Krishna with love and devotion it is transformed into pure spiritual energy. Thus anyone who drinks such transcendentalized water becomes transcendentalized.

Krishna is Inviting Us Back to His Eternal Abode

Krishna is inviting us to regain our original, eternal identities in His unlimitedly sweet transcendental pastimes, which are going on eternally in the most wondrous spiritual sky. Now it is up to us to decide whether we want to continue suffering in the cycle of birth and death or we would prefer to relish an eternal life, full of knowledge of bliss in Lord Sri Krishna's realm far, far beyond all the anxieties of material existence.

Question: Surrender Robs Us of Our Individuality?

Does surrender to Krishna take away one's freedom and individuality?

B.A.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Surrender to Krishna Restores Individuality

Freedom and individuality in this material world are myths because everyone here is a slave who is simply being manipulated by the three modes of material nature just like a puppet on a string. In spite of this everyone falsely thinks themselves to be a free individual who makes their own decisions. If one wants actual freedom and individuality, he must come to the original, pure position he once had before he became contaminated by the foolish desire to try to lord it over this material nature.

Absorbed in the Ecstatic Mellows of Devotional Service to Krishna

Krishna consciousness means to be absorbed in the ecstatic mellows of devotional service to Krishna. It is the original unadulterated form of existence. It is unlimitedly sweet, free from all defects, and eternal. Under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master, that person who has become fully Krishna conscious, one can learn how to also enter into this state of super ecstatic consciousness and always remain solidly fixed in it for all of eternity. There is no greater attainment or success than this.

Question: How Can I Please You?

You put things in such a clear manner that even the most fallen soul will be able to understand very difficult topics. I was hoping to receive some instruction from you. I want to be engaged in Caitanya Mahaprabhu's service, and I believe that you are His eternal associate. Please tell me what is the best way to please you.

Your Aspiring Servant,
Bhakta David

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Chant, Become Sinless, and Share the Nectar

It is a fact that we are all the eternal associates of the Lord. Simply we have forgotten our real identities and are now dreaming that we have some identity in this material world. When we wake up from this material dream we will see that we are all the eternal associates of the Lord. I am very pleased that you want to be engaged in Lord Caitanya's service. The best way to please me is that you please Lord Caitanya by chanting at least 16 rounds every day of the Hare Krishna mantra on japa mala beads along with strictly avoiding illicit sex, intoxication, meat eating, and gambling. Also you should as much as possible read Srila Prabhupada's books and share the topmost knowledge with everyone that you meet. In this way become fixed solidly in Krishna consciousness, and we will be very happy to accept you as our initiated disciple.

Former US President Bill Clinton Gets a Gita

On Thursday 14 June 2012 one of our readers, Bhakta Brian, dressed as a devotee, was out distributing books on a crowded sidewalk on Santa Monica Boulevard in Santa Monica, California when all of a sudden former US President Bill Clinton chose him out of the crowd, walked up to him, shook his hand, and gave him a warm hug. Listen now to an interview with Bhakta Brian how he gave the Bhagavad-gita to this world famous celebrity:

We hope and pray that this Mr. Clinton, who does not eat meat, will carefully study Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad-gita As It Is. If the general population and such prominent and influential persons can take to the proper understanding of the Bhagavad-gita, the entire world atmosphere will be transformed into Vaikuntha. Therefore we encourage Bhakta Brian to continue distributing Srila Prabhupada's books, and we request that all of our readers should as much as possible dedicate their lives for distributing Srila Prabhupada's books. Question: Chanting or Regulative Principles More Important?

What is more important, chanting the Hare Krishna mantra or avoiding sinful activities by following the four regulative principles?

D.P.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Chanting Hare Krishna is Most Important

Chanting is the most important thing. But for chanting to become perfect you must strictly follow the four regulative principles: no illicit sex, no meat eating, no intoxication, and no gambling. If one breaks the regulative principles, he will not achieve the perfection of chanting, namely to go back to home, back to Godhead.

Beware of the Mayavadi Philosophy

In a nutshell Mayavadi philosophy is the concept that everything is one, that this oneness is a formless, impersonal God, and that nothing exists except for God. It propounds that any perception of anything else besides pure undifferentiated oneness is an illusion. The individual selves do not actually exist. Only the Supreme Self exists and it is not a person and it does not have any form, any qualities, or any activities. Mayavadi philosophy is attractive to a certain class of men because according to Mayavadi philosophy the individual is actually God Himself, simply he has forgotten that he is God, that's all. And then according to any one of the various self-realization systems he can reclaim his position of God when he becomes perfectly self-realized. For example, the Mayavadis say that through bhakti yoga one can become God. Their idea is that while in the neophyte stage of bhakti yoga there is the worshipper and the worshipable, in the perfectional stage of bhakti the worshipper becomes the worshipable. He uses the spiritual master like a ladder to elevate himself to the position of being God. Then once he becomes God he kicks away the spiritual master as an unnecessary burden. This Mayavadi philosophy, although attractive to many, is seriously flawed on many different levels. For example, one does not become free from greed and selfishness in Mayavadi philosophy. One who could not get ahead in material now tries to get ahead in a different way by his so-called becoming God. Therefore Srila Prabhupada describes it as the last snare of the material energy.

Answer: Everything is Zero. Everything is One.

Voidism is the philosophy that everything is zero. Impersonalism is the philosophy that everything is impersonal oneness. Practically speaking they are the same thing because they both consider the form of God to be maya or an illusion. Therefore they are both referred to as Mayavadi philosophy.

The Absolute Necessity of Self Realization

Just as a fish is meant to swim in the water and as a bird is meant to fly in the sky, human life is meant for spiritual awakening, for self realization. Therefore there is no question of being happy if one remains in ignorance. Sometimes it is said that ignorance is bliss, but this is only true for the ignorant fools who like asses imagine suffering to be enjoyment. Those who desire genuine ananda or unlimited bliss must take to the pathway of self-realization for realizing the Absolute Truth and thus always tasting brahma-sukham, absolute happiness.

Question: How to Bring Others to Krishna?

Dear Gurudeva,
Namaste.

I would like to ask the following questions:

Who are qualified to study and follow Srimad Bhagavad-gita? Around me I see most of the people who are not pious and reverent, do not control their senses and do not sincerely perform their daily spiritual duties. How one can lead these people to their original Krishna Consciousness? Is it possible?

Yours in Yoga,

Janardan Mali

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: First You Must Fully Surrender

Any person who submissively hears from the bona fide spiritual master automatically becomes qualified to study and follow the Bhagavad-gita. And anyone who would like to do the topmost service of bringing others to Krishna consciousness must first of all become solidly situated himself in Krishna consciousness. This is accomplished by complete surrender unto the bona fide spiritual master through the process known as diksha or initiation.

Realizing and Distributing Pure Bhakti

The absolute necessity for every living being to be happy is the awakening of pure bhakti, pure devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead within his heart. This is his original pure nature before he became contaminated by coming into contact with the material atmosphere. Because of this necessity the ultimate welfare activity is the distribution of pure bhakti to the souls of this material world, who are greatly suffering due to their lack of Krishna consciousness. Whatever one has realized about Krishna, he should distribute to those who do not have Krishna consciousness. And then Krishna, being exceedingly pleased with him, will give him even more realization, which he can then distribute and become qualified for even more realization. In this way by realizing and distributing pure bhakti, the devotee becomes ever-increasingly more advanced in Krishna consciousness and more and more empowered to deliver the fallen, conditioned souls of this universe.

Question: How to Deal with My Christian Father?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Recently my father has taken to Christianity and he keeps telling me that the only way to God is through Jesus. Firstly, how should I respectfully respond to him every time he says this quote from the Bible, which he strongly reaffirms his faith to, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."? And lastly, as a neophyte of Krishna consciousness I understand that I am not in the position to fully educate or preach to my dad about Lord Krishna. Therefore, how can I maintain a balance between my faith and my family life without offending either too much?

Kuvera S.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Encourage Him to Follow Jesus Perfectly

Encourage him to follow his chosen path with sincerity and full devotion. In this connection Srila Prabhupada has stated in a room conversation on 10 May 1969 in Columbus, Ohio, "Either you follow Lord Jesus Christ or Lord Buddha or Krishna, it doesn't matter much. But do it perfectly. That is our request."

Question: Chanting Tips and Soul Consciousness

Please accept my respectful obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Are there any tips for effective chanting? (I chant up to 10 rounds only.)

How to develop the understanding that we are not this body but soul?

Pranav.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Concentrate, Increase, and Analyze

Try to feel the presence of Krishna when you chant your rounds, and increase your rounds to at least 16 rounds per day to give you sufficient spiritual strength to always remain absorbed in Krishna consciousness 24 hours a day.

For understanding your spiritual identity, soberly observe how your body is constantly changing at every moment with the old blood corpuscles dying off and new blood corpuscles always taking their place, while at the same time the self within the body who can observe these constant bodily changes remains the same. Such intelligent analysis will give you a clear understanding that you are not your body.

All you have to do to forgive him is to remember how many people have so kindly forgiven you even when you did not deserve to be forgiven. Mercy is contagious. Spread it around. And he taught us by his example the importance of drinking milk by personally taking hot milk every evening as part of his standard diet. Question: Does Individual Human Cell Have a Soul?

As a biologist, I grow human cells in glass dishes everyday. These cells were derived from a tumor in a patient years ago. These cells still grow. If the soul is the principle living force for every individual, then after one's death how is it that these single cells from the dead body remain alive in the lab? Do these cells have the Paramatma alone in them without the presence of the individual atma our soul? How, according to Vedic understanding, are they alive?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Soul is Present in All Living Things

The cells that you are maintaining also have souls present within them. This is how they are able to remain alive. Since the individual soul is always accompanied by the Supersoul, the Paramatma, the Paramatma is also present within those cells.

Question: How to Travel to Other Planets?

I have been attending the ISKCON lectures both in Nigeria and Ivory Coast, where I am living presently. Please I want to know how to travel to other planets. I have read a lot from books. Now I need a practical approach to it.

Thanks for your love.
David

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Worship the Planet's Presiding Deity

All you have to do to travel to other planets and gain residency on them is devote yourself to the presiding deity of that particular planet. Just like here on this planet, if you want to enter a country, you must have a visa from the government of that country. If you try to enter by force, you will not be allowed. So, if you want to go to the moon, worship the moon god. Or if you want to go the sun, worship the sun god. Because the astronauts were not devotees of the moon god, they had no moon visa and were thus not to able to gain admittance to the moon civilization.

But it should be carefully noted in this connection that there is no planet in this material world worth going to because they are all places of misery wherein repeated birth and death take place. If you want to travel to other planets, which is a healthy, natural desire for a human being, you should worship, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and thus qualify yourself for permanent residency on His planet, Goloka Vrindavan, which is the topmost planet in the spiritual sky. This will be the perfection of your desire to travel to other planets.

Why So Much Brutality in Syria?

The media is currently awash with multitudinous reports of horrific brutality in Syria. It is psychologically devastating to learn of so many atrocities committed by human beings against other human beings. It is natural for the inquisitive mind to wonder why this is going on, especially in such proportion. For the answer we do not have to go very far. Such things are clearly explained in the Vedic wisdom. Because we are daily committing so many unspeakable atrocities against the cows and other innocent animals in the slaughterhouses, it is only natural that the brute mentality, which allows us to murder these animals and relish their blood and flesh, allows us to also be brutal with other human beings. Therefore if we want world peace, it is absolutely imperative that we shut down all of the slaughterhouses all over the world. But the difficulty is that the foolish people want world peace while they continue to brutalize the innocent animals in the slaughterhouses. It will never be possible.

Krishna consciousness is not another faith or another sect of religion. One's faith may change at any time from one religious sect to another. But the original nature of the soul, to be a lover of God, is inseparable from the living being in any condition. This original, unchangeable nature of the living being is called Krishna consciousness. Since Krishna consciousness is not a faith, there is no question of distrusting other faiths. Question: Vivekananda, Football, and Eggplant?

I wanted to know what is your view (the Vaishnava view) of Swami Vivekananda's quote that it is better to play football than to read the Bhagavad-gita.

Also, he had a similar view on the Tulasi plant wherein he recommends to grow an eggplant instead.

Thank you very much,
Your servant,

Deepanshu R.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Krishna, Bhagavad-gita, and Tulasi

My view, your view, his view--these are all useless speculations. Therefore we must find out what is the view of the supreme authority, Lord Sri Krishna. His view, as revealed perfectly and completely in the Bhagavad-gita, is 100% perfect and complete.

If Swami Vivekananda was saying to play football instead of reading an unauthorized so-called Bhagavad-gita, which teaches that one should not surrender to Krishna, I could not agree with him more. But if he was referring to the actual Bhagavad-gita as it is, which teaches that one should surrender to Krishna, it is better that he should spend his time playing football instead of misguiding the human society by making such inane, insane statements in contradiction to the teachings of Krishna.

Regarding tulasi and eggplant: According to the Bhagavad-gita, if one eats an eggplant without lovingly offering it to Lord Krishna before eating, he is eating only sin. For an offering to be accepted by Krishna it must be accompanied by a tulasi leaf. Therefore one should grow both eggplant and tulasi if he wants to be liberated from sin and attain the spiritual kingdom at the time of death.

Anyone who is ignorant of the Bhagavad-gita's teachings is not qualified to be a spiritual master. If someone does not know how to become liberated from birth and death, how can he guide others to become liberated? It will not be possible. Therefore the Bhagavad-gita advises us to accept as our spiritual master a person who has factually realized the Absolute Truth, not a mental speculator who very proudly gives his own views in defiance of the teachings of Krishna.

This is the advantage of being part of a family of souls who are also striving to become spiritually perfect. Thus in my humble attempt to help spread the most sublime ultimate self-realization science of Krishna consciousness all over the world I am very happy when more and more sincere souls come forward to join our spiritual family, which was named by my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, as ISKCON, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It is most auspicious that more people are joining our society every day. There is truly nothing more enlivening than this. We hope that this spiritual family will continue growing so much so that one day it will engulf the entire human society.

Question: How to Not Doubt Krishna's Existence?

I was introduced to Krishna consciousness about three months ago through the wonderful books of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Iíve learned so much, but at the same time I have a big problem, which is my faith in the Supreme. For a few days I feel that I am on the right path, but then I hear criticism from a Christian point of view and I start wondering, "Is Lord Krishna real?" I end up getting really upset because I feel that Iím letting the Lord down by doubting Him.

Any advice on how I can overcome this?

Thank you

S.C.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: If You are Real, Krishna Must Also Be Real.

Arguments against the supremacy of Krishna are not Christian because Christ was himself a pure devotee of Krishna. You are being disturbed by so-called Christians who do not have any idea of what Christ actually taught.

How can Krishna not be real? He is the source of everything. If you are real, Krishna must also be real because you are a separated expansion of Krishna. In other words, if the apple is real, the apple tree cannot be false because the apple comes from the apple tree.

Don't associate with blasphemous people who speak against the reality of Lord Krishna. If you will stick to the association of Krishna's devotees, your faith will not be broken.

The Spiritual Master's Only Anxiety

Srila Prabhupada has wonderfully described why the spiritual master is very dear to Krishna in a lecture that he gave in Los Angeles on 28 December 1973:

"Why the spiritual master is very dear to Krishna? Because his only anxiety is how Krishna will be known all over the world. That's all. He has no ambition, pounds, shilling, pence. He only wants to know, only wants to see that everyone is devotee of Krishna and they are happy."

The spiritual master is so merciful that he is willing to take birth after birth to deliver the suffering souls of this material world. This is why he is described as an ocean of mercy.

Question: Spiritual and Material Familial Affection

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Sometimes I pray to Lord Krishna for the good health and long life of my near and dear relatives. Then I wonder that maybe it is a materialistic prayer. Sometimes my behavior hurts them because I point out their emotions towards me as being materialistic. At times I suppress my emotions, thinking them as being materialistic. This is creating a lot of disturbances. Please help me, Guru Maharaja, to understand what is material and what is spiritual in my relationships so that I can engage in them in such a way that is favorable for my Krishna consciousness and for the Krishna consciousness of my near and dear ones.

Your servant
S.T.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: The Perfection of Family Affection

It is natural to feel affection for our friends and family members. Instead of artificially denying this affection we should offer this affection in the service of Krishna by making our friends and family members Krishna conscious. At the same time we should cultivate the transcendental vision of seeing all living beings as our family members and becoming their best friend by giving them Krishna consciousness. This is the perfection of family affection.

Question:Instruction Needed to Take Prabhupada's Shelter?

If I understand correctly, one's guru can advise him to take shelter of Srila Prabhupada, and that will not be an offence. However, if one directly takes shelter of Srila Prabhupada without getting one's guru's instruction, is that considered to be offensive because it is jumping over the head of one's spiritual master?

Sunil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Instruction or No Instruction. Take Shelter.

Either approach is correct.

Someone can read Prabhupada's books and accept Prabhupada as their spiritual master and then surrender to his instruction to take initiation from one his disciples.

Or someone can be inspired by the preaching of one of Prabhupada's disciples, accept him as their spiritual master and be instructed by him to take shelter of Prabhupada and his teachings.

Through either approach the end result is the same. One will be sheltered by his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, and the entire disciplic succession. This will empower him to become a pure devotee and go back to Godhead.

How to Constantly Swim in an Ocean of Bliss

If we want to taste the real nectar of the holy names, we must become very, very humble. One cannot maintain a sense of "I am great" and at the same time relish the sweet flavor of Krishna's holy names. We must consider ourselves to be lower than a blade of grass, and we must be more tolerant than a tree and always willing to offer all respect to others even if they are disrespectful to us. In such a state of mind we can constantly swim in an ocean of transcendental bliss while chanting Krishna's unlimitedly sweet holy names.

Question: Is Krishna Hiding in His Devotees' Hearts?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Is it true that Krishna is hiding within His devotees and if our vision is enough purified and sharp we will be able to see His presence in this association?

Thank you! Hare Krishna!

Your servant: Sarvabhauma dasa

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Visible for the Pure Devotees

While it is true that Krishna is present within the hearts of His pure devotees, it is not that He is hiding there. It is we who are covering our eyes. He is always fully visible everywhere for those whose eyes have been anointed with the salve of love. His hiding is done in the form of Lord Caitanya. Although He is the bluish-blackish Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He is now hiding by assuming the golden form of His devotee, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Transcend the Madness of this Material World

If you want sanity, you have to be transcendental to the madness of this material world. Here even on the slightest provocation, because their minds are not peaceful, people will engage in fighting for no legitimate reason. Especially in this age, people will commit murder or nations will go to war simply due to frustration over their miserable existence. They foolishly think that by exerting their so-called supremacy they can find satisfaction. Because they are not the supreme, by this method they will never be successful. If they would like to take our advice, we can inform them to stop artificially trying to be the supreme. Acknowledge that you are subordinate to the supreme and fully surrender yourself unto Him. This will give you genuine lasting happiness, not your attempts to be supreme.

Question: Muslim Halal Food and Krishna Prasadam

Muslims kill an animal with a prayer to God and then consume it. We Vaisnavas kill a plant for consumption and then offer to Krishna and eat it. Can you kindly clarify the difference between the two processes?

Humbly yours

Milind

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: You Are What You Eat

Praying to God to bless one's food before eating it, as the Muslims do, and offering one's food to God before eating it, as the Vaisnavas do, are two entirely different things. In the standard Muslim prayer the Muslims ask God to bless their food. They do not offer it to Him. In the Bhagavad-gita God instructs that we only can eat food that has been first offered to Him with love, and He prescribes that we can only offer Him vegetarian food.

There are scriptural injunctions that give facility for meat eating. But still one has to pay a heavy price for that sanctioned meat eating. For example, in the Markandeya Purana, which is for persons in the mode of ignorance, it is prescribed that one can kill a goat before the Goddess Kali after acknowledging that by such killing one will become a goat in his next life to be killed and eaten by the very same goat that he is killing now. Such scriptural injunctions are not for encouraging meat eating. They are for discouraging those persons in the mode of ignorance who will eat meat at any cost. The government licenses the consumption of liquor and tobacco, not to encourage their consumption, but instead to restrict and discourage their consumption. Scriptural injunctions for meat eating are in the same category.

Any scriptural injunction in any scripture that allows meat eating is for persons in the mode of ignorance. Following such scriptures does not free one from the heavy karma of killing and eating an innocent creature. Such scriptural injunctions are for persons in the mode of ignorance to add God consciousness to their already sinful lives. Such remembrance of God will gradually elevate them to the Vaisnava platform on which they will only eat vegetarian food which has been offered first to God. A taste for such exclusively pure eating is required for entering into the kingdom of God because in the kingdom of God there is no meat eating. In other words, anyone who desires to enjoy the taste of blood and flesh would not be satisfied finding themselves in the vegetarian kingdom of God and would want to return to this material world to enjoy the taste of bloody flesh.

It should also be noted that killing and eating a plant without offering it to Krishna or God first is also sinful, just as is killing and eating an animal. The final lesson to be learned is that one can only eat what is first offered to God with love and devotion and that God will only accept offerings from the vegetarian category. Eat an animal, and you will become an animal. Eat the remnants of the foods offered to God with love and devotion, and you will attain the kingdom of God.

Killer Epidemic Wipes Out All Living Beings

There is an unstoppable killer epidemic that is currently ravaging the entire universe destroying all living beings in its path. No one can escape it. All will be mercilessly killed. There will be no survivors. There is nowhere to go to escape this juggernaut known as death.

There is, however, one solution for those who are bold enough to take advantage of it. One can revive his original pure identity as a deathless spiritual being. This and only this can save one from the epidemic. Those who scoff at the idea of a spiritual self will be helplessly crushed. And those who are open-minded enough to hear from the bona fide spiritual master and follow his instructions will be joyfully liberated. They will reactivate their original, spiritual, ever-youthful, death-proof, all-blissful, all-knowing identities, which will never be touched by birth, death, old age, and disease.

Answer: San Francisco--June 27, 1971

My first direct personal experience of Srila Prabhupada was greeting him along with about 200 other devotees upon his arrival at the San Francisco airport on June 27, 1971. In those days there was no airport security so we were all waiting there with a tumultuous kirtan right where the jet bridge connects to the terminal. An entire airplaneful of amazed and dazed passengers passed through our transcendental corridor of singing and dancing devotees. With great expectation I surveyed each and every passenger as they departed the jet bridge and entered the terminal to see if this person was my beloved spiritual master. With ever-increasing anticipation I surveyed every person, passenger after passenger, wondering when I would finally behold my eternal spiritual master for the first time. After what seemed like an eternity when Srila Prabhupada finally appeared, the entire assembly of devotees exploded in transcendental ecstasy, "Jaya Prabhupada!" As a group we all hit the floor simultaneously in respectful obeisances at his lotus feet. The amazing thing for me was that even though Srila Prabhupada was physically shorter than the other passengers, approximately only 5 feet-5 inches, he towered far, far above everyone else in this world, as jagat-guru the spiritual master of the universe, a person so powerful that he is described as the sum total of all the demigods.

Without Guru's Guidance We Are Lost

The Vedic scriptures implore us that if we want real knowledge, real happiness, and deliverance from the cycle of birth and death we must take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master. It is not optional. It compulsory. The bona fide spiritual master is described in the Srimad Bhagavatam as that person who has realized the conclusions of the scriptures by deliberation and is thus able to convince others of those conclusions. Without such a bona fide spiritual master we are hopelessly lost in the cycle of birth death. And if we follow strictly that bona fide spiritual master, this will be our last lifetime in the material world. Upon leaving our present bodies by his divine grace we will go back to home, back to Godhead.

Question: Stuck in an Occupational Rut

I have been searching for almost half my life (17 years) for a financially viable, interesting and tolerable profession or job well suited to my nature all to no avail no matter what I do or how hard or how many avenues I try to go down. Something comes along or doesn't come along to sabotage it and it ends up not working out for one reason or another or no obvious reason at all. Sometimes it is my fault and other times it's due to unforeseeable and unfortunate external circumstances beyond my immediate control. Is this seemingly futile and never ending quest for a good job primarily the effects of bad actions from previous lives? I have no other explanation as to why this heavy black cloud won't lift off my life. Is our health/wealth/finances and relationships already fixed up and predetermined with little or nothing that we can do about it? How can becoming Krishna conscious transcend the undesirable fruits of past actions in this present life and help us to tolerate it in a serene and confident mood?

Hare Krishna

Eric

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Transcendentalize Your Rut

You are feeling stuck in an occupational rut. Because this material world is not our actual home, anyone who has philosophical integrity like your good self will realize that no material occupation can itself bring satisfaction to the self. Only a fool will imagine that material life gives real happiness. Thus the only way you will find real satisfaction is to transcendentalize your job rut. In other words, accept whatever material occupation is available and most suitable to your nature, even if it is not perfect, and then concentrate your full attention on awakening your dormant Krishna consciousness. In other words, no job can make you happy, even the so-called ideal job. The only thing that can make you happy is to tolerate your job and offer your life to Krishna.

In this connection it is stated in the Srimad Bhagavatam 1.2.8:

dharmah svanusthitah pumsām
visvaksena-kathāsu yah
notpādayed yadi ratim
śrama eva hi kevalam

"The occupational activities a man performs
according to his own position are only so much useless labor
if they do not provoke attraction for the message of the Personality of Godhead."

In order to follow this profound instruction from the Srimad Bhagavatam you should do your job as on offering to Krishna by spending your income on a purely Krishna conscious lifestyle for yourself and by donating whatever extra income you have to the preachers of the Krishna consciousness movement to assist them in their world deliverance mission. In this way your job rut will become mystically transformed into bhakti yoga and amazingly become a means of deepening and enhancing your blissful ever-expanding Krishna consciousness.

And above all, if you will continue chanting Hare Krishna whether you are in distress or in happiness, you will discover great peace of mind and satisfaction within your heart by reviving your lost eternal relationship with Krishna as His servant.

We Must Regain Our Natural Healthy Consciousness

The living being in his natural healthy consciousness is always fully absorbed in serving Lord Sri Krishna, the transcendental source of all existence. As soon as he forgets Krishna he is plunged into an ocean of misery. This falldown of the living is nicely explained as follows in the Prema-vivarta:

krsna-bahirmukha jīva bhoga-vāńchā kare
nikata-stha māyā tāre jāpatiyā dhare

"Turning his face away from Krishna, the jiva develops the desire to enjoy.
Standing nearby, Maya slaps him and seizes hold of him."

If we find ourselves in this unhealthy situation of having been captivated by Maya, the material energy, we should regularly chant the holy names of God under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master. In this way we can gradually regain our original, healthy state of pure love of God and return to an immortal, youthful existence in the Lord's abode, Goloka Vrindavana.

Question: If the Guru Falls Down?

It was with great delight I read your answer to a question regarding "Should we read the previous acharyas' books?" wherein you have rightly glorified Srila Prabhupada and titled your answer "Don't jump over Srila Prabhupada." No doubt, it is a wonderful answer.

Next logical question that would follow is: What about grand or great grand disciples of Srila Prabhupada? What should they do? Should they jump over their guru and read Srila Prabhupada books or what? Everybody is not as fortunate as you to find a guru who is ably empowered like Srila Prabhupada. We often hear of gurus falling down. What should the grand disciples or great grand disciples do, so that they can continue to make spiritual progress without offending their guru or facing setbacks in an unfortunate and unforeseen falldown of their guru?

Very Humbly,

Sunil Goel

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Disciple Can Carry Him Back to Godhead

Just as Prabhupada instructed us not to jump over his head to the previous acharyas, I am also instructing my disciples not to jump over Srila Prabhupada's head to the previous acharyas. Srila Prabhupada's books are unique in the history of Vaisnavism. No acharya has ever made the teachings of Krishna so comprehensible and practical. Therefore all devotees for at least the next 10,000 years should base their spiritual lives on the teachings found in Srila Prabhupada's books.

So the question remains, "Are my disciples jumping over my head by reading Srila Prabhupada's books?" The answer is a resounding "No" because they are doing so on my order. Jumping over the head means disobeying your spiritual master's orders. I have ordered my disciples to strictly follow the teachings in Srila Prabhupada's books and to fully absorb themselves in reading all of Srila Prabhupada's books again and again for their entire lives. In this way, even after my disappearance when I am no longer here to instruct them, they will be fully protected in their spiritual lives by remaining solidly connected with the greatest Vaisnava acharya in the history of the universe.

You are not properly understanding the potency of the guru-parampara system, the system of disciplic succession. Any disciple who purely follows Srila Prabhupada is ably empowered by him to transmit the full spiritual potency of Srila Prabhupada and the previous acharyas all the way back to Krishna Himself.

Any guru who falls down was not very qualified to be a spiritual master in the first place. Therefore anyone who is a seeking a spiritual master must be very careful to find a highly qualified guru who will never fall down. Highly qualified means unflinchingly dedicated to strictly following and presenting the teachings of Srila Prabhupada without any deviation.

Anyone who finds himself in the unfortunate position of having accepted a guru who fell down should remember how much that guru helped and inspired him in his Krishna consciousness and should repay the guru's kindness by trying to save him. In this connection Srila Prabhupada explains in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 4.12.33 that if the disciple is strong and the siksha or diksha guru is less advanced, the disciple can carry his spiritual master back to Godhead. Therefore even if the guru turns out to be less advanced or fallen by his deviation from Srila Prabhupada's teachings, if the disciple remains firm in his adherence to Srila Prabhupada's teachings, he can carry his spiritual master back to Godhead.

Question: Should We Read the Previous Acharyas' Books?

Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

We say we follow only what Prabhupada instructed us. But I hear from so many devotees that we should also do what Bhaktivinode Thakur or Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati said. Some say that we also need to follow what other previous spiritual masters in our disciplic line (parampara) taught. And some devotees go deep, deep into philosophies from the Vedas and push us to read deeply the philosophies of previous spiritual masters. Disciplic succession or parampara means that each guru gives the same knowledge to his disciples as he got from his guru. This is what Srila Prabhupada has taught us. So where do we draw the line in our studies? How deeply do we need to go into the writings of the previous acharyas, the previous spiritual masters?

Your eternal servant,

Girish

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Don't Jump Over Srila Prabhupada

Everything we need to become perfect in spiritual understanding and perfect in pure love of Krishna is thoroughly and exhaustively taught to us by our most beloved Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaja Prabhupada, in his profoundly enlightening books, which are unique in the history of the universe. Sadly, nowadays we see a tendency in ISKCON for devotees to jump over Srila Prabhupada to the writings of the previous acharyas even before they have completely read or mastered their understanding of Srila Prabhupada's books. This is a great offense against Srila Prabhupada and will wreak havoc in the spiritual lives of those who choose to thus minimize or neglect the writings of Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada instructed us not to jump over his head going to the writings of the previous acharyas. He said, "Do not try to jump over me to my Guru Maharaja. Whatever was given by my Guru Maharaja is given by me in my books, but in just the suitable way for your understanding. I am your siksha and diksha guru." This jumping over tendency is most dangerous because it can bring about the complete destruction of our movement. Therefore our devotees should devote their entire lives to reading again and again all the books of Srila Prabhupada. By so doing they will become perfect in understanding in full the Vedic wisdom. This is confirmed as follows in the Svetasvatara Upanisad 6.23:

yasya deve parā bhaktir
yathā deve tathā gurau
tasyaite kathitā hy arthāh
prakāśante mahātmanah

"Only unto one who has unflinching devotion to the Lord and to the spiritual master does transcendental knowledge become automatically revealed."

This verse does not say that one has to jump over the head of one's guru to the previous acharyas to gain transcendental knowledge. Srila Prabhupada's books are so expertly written that they make the Vedic teachings more accessible and easily understandable than they have ever been in the history of the universe.

Question: Can Sex Urge Be Conquered by Our Own Strength?

Your humble servant,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Mercy of Guru and Krishna is Required

The great Vaishnava acharya, Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakur has answered your question. He has written:
yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo

"By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krishna.
Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement."

By our strength we may temporarily conquer over our senses. But without the blessings of a bona fide spiritual master, which give us Krishna's benedictions, we cannot get the higher taste of Krishna bhakti, which empowers us to automatically give up the lower taste of material sense gratification. We will thus be subject to falling down at any time, just as the great yogi Visvamrita Muni fell down from his position of great yogic power simply by hearing the tinkling of the ankle bells of the beautiful celestial maiden, Menaka.

Our last full day in Mauritius was 1 June 2012. We observed Nirjala Ekadasi, completely fasting from food and water for 24 hours. The highlight of the day was my lecturing at the University of Mauritius on the evolution of human consciousness. Darwin was partially correct with his theory of evolution. What he did not understand is that the millions of life forms were already existing created by Lord Brahma at the very beginning of the universe. Actual evolution is the upward transmigration of the soul in the cycle of birth and death. Over millions and millions of years the soul gradually progresses from the lower forms, such as the plants and insects, until he finally reaches the human form from where he has the option to evolve even further by attaining an eternal spiritual body or, if he acts sinfully, to devolve back down to the lower species in accordance with his degree of sinfulness.

How do we know that everything is not a lie? Can we ever truly understand?

Please help if you can. But regardless, thank you for your most beautiful and graceful spiritual leadership.

Answer: Something Must Necessarily Be True

If everything is a lie, then it is also a lie that everything is a lie. Therefore something must necessarily be true. To discover what is true is the purpose of the human form of life. Many persons in the past have realized that truth. And we can also realize it if we sincerely seek it and we take guidance from the bona fide spiritual master.

Onwards to South Africa

After a super exhilarating week of Krishna consciousness here in Mauritius we are heading out today for the next destination on our around-the-world lecture tour, South Africa. We had a lot of great kirtans here, and I was amazed once again, as I gave lecture after lecture, by the transcendental potency present in the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna as so perfectly explained by my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. There's no comparison to this knowledge anywhere within the entire universe. If only the entire world would accept this knowledge as its guiding principle, global peace and prosperity would be the immediate result.

Question: How to Offer Relationships to Krishna?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Thank you very much for your explanation on what is the real meaning and significance of desiring healthy, wealthy and wise lifestyle.

My next question is regarding those people, or souls who are very dear to us. How do we dovetail these relationships in Krishna consciousness and offer them to the Lord? What is the best service that we can do to those who are dear to us?

Thank you very much,
Hare Krishna!

Answer: Make Your Dear Ones Krishna Conscious

The perfection of relationship with those persons who are very dear to you is to deliver them from the cycle of birth and death by enlightening them in the transcendental science of Krishna consciousness.

Using Everything in Krishna's Service

If anything material can be used in the service of Krishna, it is a mistake to give it up. This is the sublime principle of renunciation taught to us by Srila Rupa Goswami, the chief follower of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. One time I was criticized by a neophyte devotee in New Zealand that my spending so much time every day on the internet was materialistic. What he failed to see is that by the thousands and thousands of hours I have invested in writing and uploading "Thought for the Day" and answering over 62,000 individual emails since 2003 I am helping so many people to become Krishna conscious. To judge the propriety or impropriety of something we should see what is its result. We should never judge anything based on stereotypes or bias.

Question: How to Avoid Sexual Frustration?

How not to be sexually frustrated while practicing Krishna consciousness?

S.D.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Don't Over-Indulge in Sex

It is commonly thought that if a man does not have sex he must be frustrated like a starving man and that therefore he needs to indulge periodically in sex. But this is not true. Sex is given by God for producing children. Beyond its procreational utility there is no biological or psychological need to indulge in sex, either with a woman or by homosexuality or masturbation. It is simply due to the false propaganda of a civilization that is maddened by sex pleasure that people think otherwise. According to Vedic science if a man does not pass semina, this most important substance will accumulate in his body to enrich his brain. Srila Prabhupada explains in this connection, "One who can completely control sex life is able to work wonderfully with his brain, especially in remembering." Due to overindulgence in sex the world is currently lacking the great men who are qualified to lead it out of its present chaotic condition. So instead of a man feeling frustrated that he is under-indulging in sex, he should feel frustrated if he is spoiling his brain by over-indulging in sex. Sex should only used for its natural purpose, i.e. making one's wife pregnant. This proper utilization of sex will free up a man's energy for his personal spiritual awakening and for his being able to make a full, meaningful, and substantial contribution to the spiritual awakening of the entire human society.
