Don't Take Devotee Association for Granted

To have the association of devotees is the greatest good fortune that we can achieve in millions and billions of lifetimes because it is through the association of devotees and by the mercy of devotees that we get the ultimate perfection of Krishna consciousness. Therefore we must always be very appreciative of devotee association and always try to be pleasing the devotees in all of our dealings with them.

Question: Understand Supreme Through Reasoning?

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

This is a question of faith. In this world we tend to try to apply critical reasoning to most aspects of our life, our family, our job, our education, etc. How can I, someone who strives to apply such reasoning throughout my life, discard this and believe all that is said by scripture and a spiritual master when sometimes what is said is rather fantastical, beyond reason. The mere existence of a Supreme defies science. Stories of Ganesha's elephant head, miracles, and others defy reason.

Thank you so much for your time and guidance.

Kayton Parekh

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Every Machine Requires an Operator

Regarding this question: It is not true that the existence of a Supreme defies science. To the contrary, it is science which reconfirms the existence of a Supreme. In science we observe and analyze the world around us and draw conclusions, which are known as scientific theories. The validity of those theories is tested by observation and experiment. If the theory holds true after intense scrutiny, it is accepted as true. This is the scientific method.

We can apply the same scientific method to realize the truth of the Supreme Person. By studying machines throughout the world we can conclude that all machines require an operator. And then we can analyze the universe and see that it is functioning as a gigantic machine. From this we can conclude that there must be a Supreme Operator controlling the universe.

From science we also learn that there many things beyond our sense perception. Just because we haven't personally seen something does not mean that it does not exist. Science confirms this by showing us many things we can not see on our own. With the naked eye we cannot see ultra violet rays, but we know they exist because we have an instrument that can see them. Similarly, we have an instrument called consciousness which can, when finely tuned, allow us to personally see God.

So Krishna consciousness does not reject science. Krishna consciousness is the perfection of science.

Question: Do Non-Hindus Believe in Law of Karma?

My dearest Mahaguru,

I have some questions to you as follows:

1. Is it true that non-Hindus like Christian and Islam do not believe in the concept of karma?
2. But my friends told me that from the Bible they come across a sentence, "As you sow so shall you reap," which basically states the law of karma. How do you explain this?
3. If human suffering and happiness are entirely due to the will of God without any room for human's will? If so, does not it mean that God is quite unfair or unjust? On what basis does He elect a person to suffer for all his lifetime, for example since his birth to be crippled and blind, while the other person born in a rich and abundance family? I think the explanation given by the law of karma regarding this phenomena seems to be more acceptable. How do you think?

Please kindly enlighten me about these . Thank you so much.

Begging for mercy,
Nyoman

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Regardless of Belief It Applies to Everyone

The first point is that I am not telling you what I think. What I think is useless. Therefore I am telling you instead what I have learned from my spiritual master, who has revealed the knowledge which has come to him from Krishna through the chain of disciplic succession.

If Christians and Muslims do not accept the principle of karma, it means that they are not reading there own scriptures carefully enough. Karma is a universal principle, which is applicable to all, theists, atheists and agnostics. Not only is it taught in the Bible, as your friends have pointed out. It is also taught as follows in the Koran:

"Then, on that Day (Judgment Day), not a soul will be wronged in the least, and ye shall but be repaid the meeds of your past deeds. " (Surat Ya-Sin, 54)

If a child runs away from home and is suffering while living on the street, is this his parents' fault or is this his fault? We are the cause of our own suffering. lf we try to blame God for our suffering, that is our foolishness. In fact, this mentality of blaming God for our suffering is the cause of our suffering. It is only when we accept that it is our own foolishness which has cast us in this ocean of misery that we can come out of the suffering and return to our eternal blissful situation in the kingdom of God.

Old Habits Die Hard

Habits can be our best friend or our worst enemy. If we are habituated to always thinking, speaking, and acting in a Krishna conscious way, our habits are our best friend. And if we are habituated to always engaging in material sense gratification, our habits are our worst enemy. So how do we transition from being habituated to sense gratification to being habituated to Krishna consciousness? This is done gradually by engaging ourselves according the instructions of guru, scriptures, and the saintly devotees of the Lord. Old habits die hard. So we have to be patient while the old inauspicious habits gradually go away and the new super auspicious habits take their place.

Question: Why Did Krishna Create Maya?

Hare Krishna.

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Dear Gurudeva,

Who is Maya? Why Krishna create her?

Your Servant,
Sutha

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Maya--Warden of Material World Prison

Maya is a pure devotee of Krishna who is engaged like the warden of a prison in keeping the rebellious souls locked up in the cycle of birth. However when the rebellious imprisoned soul abandons his inimical attitude towards the Supreme Lord and becomes devoted to Him that very same Maya facilitates the deliverance of the reformed soul back to home, back to Godhead.

Uprooting the Global Quagmire

There are no material solutions for the multitudinous problems that are presently plaguing the human society. Just as chopping a weed off at the surface may seem to have gotten rid of the weed but actually has not, material solutions for what is ultimately a spiritual problem will never be effective. The problems of the modern world have to be completely uprooted if there is ever going to be any lasting global peace and prosperity. The fundamental, foundational problem, the source of all the problems, is the false bodily conception of existence. As long as people continue to think that they are their bodies, they will naturally continue to maintain an exploitative, abusive relationship with their environment. It is only when people wake up and realize that they are eternal spiritual beings and that their only happiness is to render loving service to the Supreme Being that we will see the diminishment and gradual elimination of the global madness.

Question: How to Ascertain What is True Religion?

Dear Gurudeva,
Namaste.

I would like to ask the following questions:

How to ascertain that a religion is true or false? Is it not highly improper to be hostile to other's religions? Is it not just and proper for all to give up partiality and in love with each other to arrive at the truth? Which is the oldest religion that has survived against onslaught of time?

Yours in Yoga,

Janardan Mali

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: It Makes One Saintly and Godly

Genuine religion distinguishes reality from illusion for the welfare of all and thus relieves everyone from their miseries. It teaches us how to live a saintly life and to fully surrender ourselves unto the Supreme Lord. A truly religious person is not hostile to any genuine religious system. And at the same time he is very critical of those who cheat in the name of God by engaging in sinful activities under the masquerade of religion. It is necessary for him to point out this cheating in order to establish genuine religion in the world. Demons and those manipulated by demons now engage in extremely sinful activities and call it religion. For example, the terrorists who killed thousands in the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001 considered that their heinous mass murder was a religious act. When a saintly person points out someone's cheating or illusioned mentality, this is an act of love to establish truth in the world. It is not an act of partiality or hostility.

The system of religion described in the Vedas is the oldest religious system in the world going all the way back to the beginning of the universe 155 trillion years ago when Krishna revealed this knowledge to Lord Brahma.

Time is More Valuable than Money

Time is more valuable than money. Money can be lost and gained, but any time lost is gone forever. It can never be reclaimed. Therefore we should not waste even a single moment in unnecessary material pursuits. We should instead absorb ourselves as much as possible in constantly hearing, chanting, and remembering the transcendental name, fame, forms, qualities, and pastimes of the unlimitedly sublime Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is known primarily as Krishna and also by millions of other names.

Reply from Christian: Jesus is the Only Way

Hello Sir ,

Thank you very much for taking your time and replying me.

Regarding the explanation you have given below, I think you have to be informed that Jesus says in John 14.6 "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me".

Hinduism is all about idol worship and since millenniums they were into dowry, sati and so many rituals, which are strongly against the principles of Christianity and Islam. Moreover Islam is considered to be the most scientific religion and most of the principles of Christianity and Islam are the same. So in this context how do you feel that Hinduism fits in as it is completely against this?

Also if you worship the God/Holy Spirit, again their arises a conflict that who according to you is God because as per what you said that Hindu God must be the real God, but many millions of God exist in Hinduism . The count of Gods in Hinduism is something which none of the Hindus know exactly.

Regards,
Prasanth V

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: But Christians Don't Follow His Only Way

We agree that Jesus is the only way because he is the representative of God. Christ is teaching that if you want to approach God, you must approach Him through His representative. You cannot approach Him directly. Krishna teaches the same principle in the Adi Purana. But the difficulty is that the Christians are not following Christ. They are maintaining big, big slaughterhouses where every day they torture and murder millions of innocent animals in spite of the Biblical injunction against killing.

We agree that many followers of the Vedic tradition become sidetracked by so many rituals. This is why the Bhagavad-gita teaches that one should give up all of these rituals and fully surrender himself unto the Supreme Lord.

The millions of gods which are described in the Vedic scriptures are not the Supreme God. They are his subordinate servants to assist the Supreme Lord in His universal managerial affairs. The Bhagavad-gita strongly asserts that we should not worship these millions of gods, that we should instead simply worship the one Supreme God.

If one is truly religious, he will develop all saintly qualities. But we see that all over the world the so-called religious people are deeply engrossed in sinful activities. Therefore we are wondering when will that happy day come to this planet when those who profess religion will actually become religious.

Suffering: Springboard to Unlimited Happiness

In this material world we suffer a lot more than we would like to. In fact, we don't want to suffer at all, not even for a minute. The problem is that because this material world is a place of misery, suffering is unavoidable. Even though suffering is totally undesirable, we are forced by the laws of nature to repeatedly and perpetually undergo it birth after birth. However when one is truly Krishna conscious his perspective is completely different. He sees suffering as his good friend instead of his enemy. He capitalizes on his suffering, using it as a springboard to situate himself in sobriety, a state of not being carried away by the false glitter of material happiness. And from this sober state he then connects himself with the real, unlimitedly blissful happiness of Krishna consciousness which goes on increasing forever.

Inquiry from Christian: Who to You Is the Real God?

Thanks for replying to my mail out of the work and busy schedule that you have. Sure we can have a meaningful discussion. Can you please explain to me on what basis you said "Hindu" is a Muslim-invented term. I have never heard of anything like this before. Also, if you say that God is one and that by becoming a devotee of Krishna you have not stopped your devotion to Jesus Christ, what is it that you worship now, and exactly who according to you is the real God?

Prasanth v

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: The Father of Jesus is the Real God

Jesus presents himself as the son God. He presents his father as the real God. This is the God that I accept. Jesus says that the name of his father is holy. Therefore I regularly chant the holy name of God. I worship both the son and the father by dedicating my life fully for their mission of bringing about the respiritualization of the ever-increasingly decadent human society. The idea of God the father is given in the Bible in an introductory way, with the details of that same God being revealed in the Bhagavad-gita.

Regarding the designation Hindu, this term that was coined by the Muslims. The Indus river is known in Sanskrit as the Sindhu river. That river is still existing now in Pakistan. Outside the border of India, the Muslims used to call those who lived east of the Sindhu river as Hindus. Because they pronounce "s" as "h" they called them Hindus instead of Sindhus. So this is the origin. Hindu is a title given by the Muslims. It is not found anywhere in the Vedic literature.

Krishna Consciousness Dispels All Miseries

In this material world everyone is suffering from the effects of the four-fold miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease. Even those who are most powerful, wealthy and successful must also suffer in the grip of these inescapable agonies. Therefore those who are actually compassionate fully dedicate their lives for awakening the dormant Krishna consciousness that is sleeping in the hearts of all human beings, because it is only through this Krishnaization of consciousness that the people can become free from the grip of these otherwise unavoidable four-fold miseries.

I didn't know anything about you until I watched your video program. I am a Christian with my roots in Hinduism. I found your video and felt very bad and embarrassing to know that you ideally being a Christian by birth have adopted to Hinduism. I can really bet you that you are just fooling yourself by practicing Hinduism, when all of Hinduism is based on fakeness and black magic and things like that. If you wish I can share a few video links on YouTube which clearly prove the validity of Christianity and Islam and strictly tells Hinduism is a fake religion and practice. All what you do is for Satan or devil worship which was a prophecy that many like you will worship unreal gods in the modern world. So stop fooling yourself and innocent people. Also try proving to me what you do is correct. I bet you can't.

Answer: The Truly Religious Don't Fight Over Labels

Dear Prasanth,

Please accept my greetings.

Thank you for opening your heart up to me. I understand that you consider me to be a devil worshipper or a follower of Satan because I am a Hindu and that you are claiming yourself to be a genuine follower of Lord Jesus Christ. You have challenged me to prove to you that what I am doing is correct.

Before I waste my time I must first ask: Are you willing to lay aside all preconceived ideas and prejudices and be fully open-minded? If so, we can have a meaningful discussion. Otherwise, if you are not willing to be open-minded, I will simply be wasting my time and yours also.

I can also add that I have never given up my devotion to Jesus Christ to become a Hindu. "Hindu" is a word invented by the Muslims. It it is not a valid scriptural term. Religion is one, to become a pure lover of God. Those who fight over labels do not know what is the real meaning of religion. If you are willing to rise beyond the level of cats and dogs and communicate with me as a respectful gentleman, then we can have a fruitful and meaningful dialogue, otherwise not.

I am wishing you the very best and hoping you can respond as a gentleman.

Constantly Enlivened in Krishna Consciousness

The secret for being constantly enlivened in Krishna consciousness is very, very simple. Always remember Krishna and never forget Him. Be always vigilant to see that you are keeping Krishna in your thoughts in all times, places, and circumstances. If you offer the results of everything you do to Krishna, it is not at all difficult to always remember Him. Just as a hard working employee remains enthused in his job by always thinking that he is working to support his wife and children, in a similar way the devotee always remains enlivened by constantly remembering the supreme lovable person for whom he is working.

Question: Guilt From Only Doing Bhakti for Myself

Dear Guru,

I have some doubts about my honesty. My way to Krishna consciousness has started only few months ago, though my heart feels that I have made the right decision. I am chanting sixteen rounds, offering food to Krishna, going to the temple, serving there, reading Srila Prabhupada books, spending time with devotees, of course following all 4 principles and so on. However, I realized that I am doing all this for myself, I feel a pleasure doing this. When I look deep to heart, I see that it is not for Krishna or at least more for myself that for Him. It makes me sad. How could I work on this to change my behavior? I want to be honest devotee. Serving only for Krishna.

Thank you very very much.

Answer: Teach Others About Krishna Bhakti

The answer is very simple. You should not only practice Krishna bhakti for your own liberation. You should also engage in the supreme welfare work of delivering others by telling everyone you meet about Krishna. In this way your practice of Krishna consciousness will become purely selfless and unlimitedly satisfying. Therefore you should participate as much as possible in the public chanting of the Holy Names of God for the benefit of the citizens in general as well as in the distribution of Srila Prabhupada's books to all the people of your country.

Become Fearless by Chanting Hare Krishna

Question: Guru Needed When Chanting Alone Saves?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you! All glories to your transcendental preaching!

In his purport to Bhagavad-gita 9.25 Srila Prabhupada writes, "The Krishna consciousness movement is therefore distributing sublime information to the entire human society to the effect that by simply chanting the Hare Krishna mantra one can become perfect in this life and go back home, back to Godhead."

If one can go back home simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, what is the need to accept a spiritual master?

Begging your mercy,
Virendra

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Proper Chanting Requires Having a Guru

Chanting Hare Krishna properly includes accepting a spiritual master. Without accepting a guru Krishna will not accept your chanting. This is confirmed as follows in the Adi Purana:

ye me bhakta-janāh pārtha
na me bhaktāś ca te janāh
mad-bhaktānām ca ye bhaktās
te me bhakta-tamā matāh

"The person who claims to be My devotee is not My devotee. Rather it is the devotee of My devotee who is My actual devotee."

It is stated in scripture that if one disobeys his spiritual master his chanting is offensive. This means that one must have a spiritual master if he is going to properly chant Hare Krishna.

His Glory Triumphantly Dominates the World

In this material world people are regularly glorified in the news media and in so many other ways. But what is their actual glory? Everyone is simply acting selfishly and ingloriously for their own sense gratification. Some are acting in goodness, some in passion, and some in ignorance according to the dictates of karma. Therefore the pure selfless glory of Lord Sri Krishna stands unequalled and supreme far, far beyond the glory of anyone else. This is confirmed as follows in Brahma-samhita Text 5.42

ānanda-cinmaya-rasātmatayā manahsu

Question: How Do Animals Qualify for Human Birth?

If due to misdeeds in my current life, I take birth as an insect or an animal in the next birth, what would I be expected to do while I am in the non-human body to qualify myself to be born as a human again? Being an animal I would not know about Krishna.

I have a second question. Does the soul have a gender or could the gender keep changing over lifetimes?

Thanking you,

Satya

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: They Automatically Evolve to Human Form

Those souls who have taken birth as insects or animals are suffering the reactions and are burning off the karma from sins they committed when they were in the human form. They are completely under the grip of the material nature and are forced to simply act as insects or animals with no free will. Gradually over the course of time by their suffering through many births and deaths in species after species they will become sufficiently purified to automatically regain the human form. They have no power to consciously act to purify their existence. They simply must endure their karma birth after birth until they evolve to the human form in which they will have the free will to surrender to Krishna and escape the cycle of birth and death.

The soul is neither male nor female, but assumes male and female bodies in the cycle of birth and death according to the law of karma. For example, a man who dies thinking of a woman will become a woman in his next life. And a woman who dies thinking of a man will become a man in her next life.

Loving Relationships with Devotees

Just as birds have the natural psychological tendency to flock together, we humans also have the same tendency. In this regard Lord Krishna confirms in the Bhagavad-gita that we develop our consciousness according to the type of company we keep. If we associate with materialists, we become materialists. And if we associate with devotees, we become Krishna conscious. Therefore if we want to be successful in our spiritual lives, we must cultivate loving relationships with devotees and always remain absorbed in those relationships. This will save us from gliding down to the animal kingdom in our next births.

Question: How to Deal With Physical Cravings?

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am not sure if this is an appropriate question to ask you. But since I am overwhelmed by it, I thought to share with you. I have an intense longing for sex pleasure. I am aware that this craving will not help me to advance in Krishna Consciousness, but still I have it. When I'm sober, I chant and I try to stay away from it. But when I'm overwhelmed and my mind burns I start staring inappropriately at females. When I am going somewhere or watching movies explicitly depicting this act I feel as if this is the pleasure I want in life.

Many a times, I feel that there is a tug of war which goes inside my mind and I feel that I am trying to run away from something that I love the most. Please tell me how I should deal with this. Please forgive me if you feel I have asked in an inappropriate way.

Thank you.
Your insignificant servant.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Will You Serve Krishna or Your Genitals?

I am very happy that you have asked this of me. It is not at all inappropriate. In fact, it is most appropriate.

You are dealing with an addiction, which has kept you entangled in the cycle of birth and death for countless lifetimes. Finally after eons of endless suffering you have been blessed with the human form of life, which affords you the opportunity to escape this suffering by regaining your original eternal, deathless, ever-youthful existence in the wondrous spiritual sky. So now you have a choice of either giving in to this addiction of serving your genitals and going down to the animal kingdom again to get better facility for genital enjoyment as a pig or a monkey--or conquering over this genital stimulation addiction by serving the Supreme Lord and entering into an eternal existence of unlimited bliss. It is a matter for your thoughtful analysis. If I give you a cup of poison, will you drink it? So stop drinking the poison of pandering to your foolish whims of unrestricted sex enjoyment. If you want sex enjoyment, that is all right. Get yourself married and live peacefully with one wife using your genitals to produce saintly children. You must stop this animalistic habit you are now indulging in, which will force you to take birth as an animal in your next life.

From now on you must stop agitating your mind by watching mundane movies or looking at porno. Don't stare at women. And whenever you happen to see a woman you should see her as your mother, not an object of sex enjoyment. Don't overindulge the tongue with excessive sweets and rich foods because these stimulate your sexual passions. Whenever you are disturbed by thoughts of sex, chant the Hare Krishna mantra repeatedly again and again until the lusty thoughts evaporate into oblivion. In this way, if you will make an all out effort, by the grace of guru and Krishna you will break free from the chains of this disease and become a happy, liberated fully Krishna conscious man.

The World Peace Formula

As I write this "Thought for the Day" Israel and Gaza and embroiled in rocket warfare killing each other's citizens with missiles from the sky. And there are many such places in the world where fighting is going on right now. There is no reason for all of this animosity, fighting, and bloodshed in the world. It is due to ignorance only that the human society has descended to the level of cats and dogs fighting with each other on the slightest provocation. The difficulty is that the human society is not really a human society. Without spiritual awakening they remain on the animal platform where it is inevitable that they will fight, torture, and kill each other. If the world society will come to the actual human platform by realizing that they are not their bodies, that they are instead eternal spiritual beings, servants of the Supreme Absolute Truth, peace and prosperity will be the immediate worldwide result. To bring this about is our mission.

Question: Chanting Alone Can Deliver One?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you! All glories to your transcendental preaching!

In his purport to Bhagavad-gita 9.25 Srila Prabhupada writes, "The Krishna consciousness movement is therefore distributing sublime information to the entire human society to the effect that by simply chanting the Hare Krishna mantra one can become perfect in this life and go back home, back to Godhead."

If one can go back home simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, what is the need to accept a spiritual master?

Perfect life means perfect chanting. And according to Lord Sri Krishna, perfect chanting requires that one take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master.

Srila Prabhupada's Disappearance Day

Today is the disappearance day of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, my beloved spiritual master and the Founder-Acharya of ISKCON, the International Society of Krishna Consciousness. It is a day of great sadness for us that we no longer have Srila Prabhupada physically with us here on this planet to show us the perfect example of pure Krishna bhakti, inspire us with Krishna conscious lectures, and mercifully answer our many questions. It was such an enlivening and exciting time for us when Srila Prabhupada was physically present on this planet traveling from one ISKCON temple to another, repeatedly circling the globe. Now in his absence we are forced to become more strongly connected with him by fully embracing his instructions within our hearts as our very life and soul. By tightly connecting ourselves with him in the form of his instructions we feel great ecstasy, which is so sweet that it soothes the pain we feel in his separation and thus allows us to tolerate the unbearable agony of his absence.

In observance of this auspicious day when Srila Prabhupada re-entered the pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna, Srila Prabhupada's disciples and followers all over the world fast until noon and then partake of a sumptuous feast which has been offered to him with love.

Srimad Bhagavatam Bliss

The Srimad Bhagavatam is so wonderful that wherever it is spoken, read, or heard that place becomes transcendentalized. The speaker is purified. The hearers are purified. The inquirers are purified. Everything becomes auspicious. It is not that it can only be spoken in a temple. It was originally spoken 5,000 years ago on the bank of the Yamuna river. We can speak it or read it anywhere. Several days ago on 12 November 2012 we had a Srimad Bhagavatam class in the Vilnius, Lithuania airport. Even though I had to pause the class each time an announcement came blaring over the speakers, by the sublime potency of the Srimad Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada, and the previous acharyas the class was super-enlivening for everyone.

Question: Short Mantra or Long Mantra is Better?

Dear Gurudeva,

I would like to ask following question:

Which mahamantra, a short one i.e. "om itiaksharam brahma" or a long one "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare" is better for meditation leading to awakening of original Krishna consciousness? Why?

Yours in Yoga

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Vedic Prescribed Mantra is the Best

The Vedic injunction is:

hare kṛṣṇa hare kṛṣṇa
kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare
hare rāma hare rāma
rāma rāma hare hare

iti sodaśakaṁ nāmnāṁ
kali-kalmaṣa-nāśanaṁ
nātaḥ parataropāyaḥ
sarva-vedeṣu dṛśyate

"After searching through all the Vedic literature, one cannot find a method of self-realization more effective for this age of Kali than the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra." --Kali-Santarana Upanisad

Therefore we don't have to speculate what is the best mantra. We can simply chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra and quickly and easily attain the supreme perfection of consciousness, Krishna consciousness.

Lithuania Will Become Fully Krishna Conscious

At last Saturday's Holy Name Retreat in Ziezmariai, Lithuania one of the young brahmacari monks asked me what is my prediction for Lithuania. I informed him that Lithuania will eventually become a completely Krishna conscious nation with a full slate of Krishna conscious leaders. I made this prediction, not whimsically, but on the basis of authoritative Vedic wisdom given by Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami as follows:

saj-jana, durjana, paṅgu, jaḍa, andha-gaṇa
prema-vanyāya ḍubāila jagatera jana

“The Krishna consciousness movement will inundate the entire world
and drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue
or even lame, invalid or blind.”

-- Caitanya Caritamrita Adi 7.26

This prediction will be manifested through the medium of devotees who are dedicated to preaching Krishna consciousness to the suffering souls of this world to help them out of their pitiable situation within the cycle of birth and death.

Question: Doesn't Love of God Just Happen?

I am not in a state of being to give back love to God. I do chant at times and would like that feeling of love to erupt by itself within my heart. Answer: You Already Have Pure Love for God

Thank you very much for your nice inquiry. You are wondering if love of God just happens on its own spontaneously without any conscious effort of the part of the devotee. The answer is that natural, spontaneous love of God is already fully manifested within your heart. But just like the brilliant sun cannot be seen on a cloudy day, the clouds of material consciousness are covering the brilliant sun of love of God within your heart. If you will regularly chant the holy names of God as a daily devotional discipline, the heavy clouds of material consciousness will be cleared away from your heart, and the natural, pure, spontaneous love for God that you already have within will become fully manifested.

Question: Is Hare Krishna Mantra the Only Way?

Please pardon my ignorance and incorrect utterings if any and kindly help clear my doubt.

I understand that the chanting of Hare Krishna mahamantra is prescribed as the only way to reach the highest of all planets, Krishnaloka. I wonder how people born before Hare Krishna mantra was popularized by saints and incarnations in the last 1000 years, were expected to find their way to Krishnaloka!

True, the Hare Krishna mahamantra is mentioned in Padma Purana, but so are several other mantras in various other Puranas and scriptures! To my limited knowledge, there never was an expressed prominence of the mahamantra above others mantras until it was preached by the gurus in the ancestry of ISKCON who helped popularize it.

Perhaps, the closest one could get to was by chanting the other known Vishnu mantras e.g. Vishnu Sahasranama \ Om Namoh Narayana \ Om Namoh Bhagavate Vasudevaya, and merely make it to the Vaikunthloks, still missing on the highest of all planets!

Q1. Why did every saint (Hindu and of course from other religions) keep missing it?
Q2. More importantly, why didn't Krishna himself explicitly prescribe it as part of Bhagavad-gita? Ironically he approves of Gayatri mantra, "Among all the mantras, I am the Gayatri"
Q3. Why it is not directly mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam, the most highly regarded scripture!

Humbly yours
Vivek

Answer: Hare Krishna, Best Mantra for Kali Yuga

As you thought might be the case, you do have some misunderstandings. Although the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, as confirmed in the Kali Santarana Upanisad, is the most powerful and effective means in this age of attaining the topmost planet known as Krishnaloka, it is by no means the only way. In this connection Lord Caitanya has prayed as follows:

"O my Lord, Your holy name alone can render all benediction to living beings, and thus You have hundreds and millions of names like Krishna and Govinda. In these transcendental names You have invested all Your transcendental energies. There are not even hard and fast rules for chanting these names. O my Lord, out of kindness You enable us to easily approach You by chanting Your holy names, but I am so unfortunate that I have no attraction for them."

So one can chant any name of the Lord and achieve perfection. The Hare Krishna mantra is called the Mahamantra or the Great Chanting for Deliverance because the Vedic wisdom describes it as the most powerful and effective mantra for attaining God realization in the present age of Kali. The Vedic scriptures were written before the present age of Kali. Hence, there are many different mantras, which were suitable for previous ages, mentioned there. But for this present age, the Kali Yuga, the Vedic literature specifically prescribe the Hare Krishna mantra.

The impersonalist gurus generally favor other less personal mantras such as "Om". But Krishna recommends the path of personalism to be better than the path of impersonalism. The personalist gurus favor the Hare Krishna mantra as the best means in this age for spiritual perfection.

In the Bhagavad-gita Krishna instructs us to always chant His name, and then He personally appears in the Kali yuga in the form of His own devotee (Lord Caitanya) to show us by His own example the great benefit of chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra.

Let Your Heart Be Carried Away by Krishna

Instead of letting your heart become carried away by a pretty girl or a handsome guy, just let your heart be carried away by Krishna. Any object of attraction within this material world will not remain attractive for long because that is the nature of this material world, the world of dualities. Today's object of attraction becomes tomorrow's object of repulsion. Therefore those who are wise do not allow themselves to become attracted to anything within this temporary material world. They instead focus their tendency for loving affection upon the Supreme All-Attractive Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, and thus derive ever-increasing pleasure in the mellows of that most sublime loving relationship, which never ends and which becomes more and more relishable for all of eternity.

Serve Yourself, Not the Covering of Yourself

When one desires the satisfaction of eating ice cream does he stick his shirt sleeve in the ice cream, or does he put the ice cream into his mouth? The answer is obvious. To enjoy ice cream one does not feed the ice cream to the garment which covers him. Rather, he feeds the ice cream to himself.

In a similar way, try to understand that your body is not you. It is simply a covering, a garment that you, the spiritual being within, is temporarily wearing. In other words, gratifying your material senses does not really satisfy you because it is not you. So, if you seek genuine happiness, you should focus your energies on serving your actual self, the eternal spirit-soul temporarily residing in the perishable material body. The service to the spiritual self is to reconnect it with the supreme spiritual self who has unlimited names, forms, pastimes, and qualities, who is known to His most intimate devotees as Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When you do this you will finally for the first time in millions and billions of lifetimes actually experience genuine happiness.

Incompetent Leaders Cause Worldwide Suffering

The entire planet earth is now in a most perilous suffering condition simply due to the incompetency of its leaders, who are nothing more than two-legged animals. If we elevate animalistic men to be our leaders, we can expect nothing but ever-increasing chaos on this planet. And this is exactly what is happening now. It is getting worse and worse every day.

What is the solution? We have to stop following the fools and rascals and follow the principles of the sublime God-centered Vedic culture, which in former times united the entire world society in a golden era of peace and prosperity for all. This is the only program which will bring the much desired happiness back to the human society. Therefore we must now educate the entire society to follow the enlightened Vedic teachings, not the dictates of the rascal so-called leaders who are currently ruining this planet.

Question: Why Krishna Lets Me Suffer?

Does Krishna love me? If yes, then why does He let me suffer?

Your servant,

Sutha

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: You are the Cause of Your Own Suffering.

There is no question of "if" Krishna's loves you. His love for you is unlimited. So why are you suffering? Is it Krishna's fault?

When you wanted to leave the shelter of the spiritual world to try to be an independent enjoyer the all-merciful Lord lovingly tried to protect you from the trap of material existence. But when you persisted in your foolish desire to enjoy separately the Lord facilitated you so that you could learn by your own experience that it is impossible for you to be happy independently from Him. Therefore whatever suffering you are going through now is simply due to your own foolishness. It is not the fault of the Lord.

If you want to now come out of the suffering, all you to have to do is fully surrender unto the Lord through the transparent via medium of His pure representative, the bona fide spiritual master. This full surrender to the Lord will completely liberate you from your false bodily conception, which is the actual cause of your suffering.

Am I a Youth or a Senior Citizen?

I am now 65 years old and legally considered to be a senior citizen by the US government. Of course I am referring to the body, not the actual self who is residing within the city of nine gates known as the material body. One of the many things that amaze me about the sublime process of Krishna consciousness is that it enables me to completely detach myself from the bodily conception of who I am. Even though I am sitting inside the body of a 65 year old senior citizen I still feel myself to be that 23 year old youth who joined the Hare Krishna movement in the spring of 1971. In fact I feel even more youthful now than I did then because in the last 41 years I have discarded so much psychological garbage that was unnecessarily weighing me down. So if I am to consider whether I am a youth or a senior citizen, the conclusion is that I am an eternal youth inhabitant of the spiritual world presently residing within the body of a senior citizen within this material world.

Question: How to Accept the Inconceivable?

Pranam Gurudeva,

Please tell me whether this world is infinite? Is there any end? If yes, what is beyond that? Is the spiritual world unlimited, or is it limited? I want to believe you, but in the Srimad Bhagavatam there are so many stories that seem untrue. Lot of facts are there that you cannot justify. In this situation how can faith arise inside my soul?

Please answer my one more question. Why there are so many Puranas and so many theories of the origin of the universe?

Regards

Aman

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Experience It with Purified Senses

There are fixed dimensions to this material universe in which we are currently residing. This material universe is one out of an infinite number of material universes, which together constitute the entire material world. This material world is a one-fourth portion of the entire existence with the three-fourths portion being the spiritual world. In the spiritual world there are an infinite number of spiritual planets called Vaikunthalokas. Out of the infinite number of these Vaikuntha planets there is one planet call Krishnaloka, which is the topmost of all the planets.

The Vedic wisdom is inconceivable because it describes that which is imperceivable by our highly restricted material senses. The only way that you can get beyond your present confused state regarding the Vedic wisdom is to purify your consciousness so that you can directly perceive with your own purified senses all the truths revealed in the profound Vedic wisdom. The purifying process is the sublime bhakti yoga system which is taught by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita and by the bona fide spiritual master, the pure representative of Lord Krishna.

There are different Puranas for different grades of men: six for those in the mode of ignorance, six for those in the mode of passion, and six for those in mode of goodness. Out of the six sattvic (mode of goodness) Puranas there is one Purana which is in pure goodness, the Bhagavat Purana or Srimad Bhagavatam. From its very beginning it completely rejects all sort of religious activities that are materially motivated and propounds the highest truth as reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. This spotless Purana is especially meant for those who desire to get out of the material entanglement permanently.

The Vedic descriptions of the origin of the universe are not theories. They are all facts, and they all lead to the same conclusion that the ultimate origin of everything is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Question: How You Knew to Ask Me to Write You?

I found your lecture the other night in Šakiai, Lithuania very interesting and inspirational. So I watched some more of your lectures on YouTube. I decided to begin with becoming a vegetarian, but this is really difficult, not because I can't live without meat or something like that, but because I live with my parents. So I have to eat what they want me to eat. They don't want me to refuse eating meat. But I promise, I will try.

I wanted to ask you: Why that night at the lecture did you ask me in particular to write you? I mean there were so many more people there at the lecture. How did you know out of all the people that I was looking for something like this?

Yours faithfully,

Eve

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Krishna Inspired Me to Ask You to Write

Krishna knew that you have a desire to receive spiritual guidance. Therefore he inspired me to ask you to write me. Krishna knows everything about you, even more than you know about yourself. If you will put yourself always under His guidance, by His inconceivable mercy your life will be amazingly transformed. You will be living at every minute in a magical wonderland.

I understand that you want to be a vegetarian but your parents want you to eat meat because they eat it. What you have to do is sincerely explain your desire to your parents. Tell them that you will not be happy eating meat, that you will only be happy if they will let you become a vegetarian. Sincerely explain to them that it breaks your heart that the innocent animals are being killed so that we can enjoy eating their blood and flesh. They initially might become angry and demand that you keep eating meat. But because as your parents they genuinely love you and care about your being happy, if you maintain your desire to become a vegetarian and continue to remind them of your desire, in due course of time they will allow you to become a vegetarian.

Please stay in touch with me regularly so I can continue to guide you step by step on this most sublime pathway of unlimited happiness.

Nothing Sweeter than Loving Srila Prabhupada

Back in 1971 I was holding back from completely surrendering myself to the process of Krishna consciousness. Being then a singer/songwriter, who was attracted to Krishna consciousness, I thought I would spread Krishna consciousness in my own way by writing and singing Krishna conscious songs for the spiritual elevation of my audiences. But the devotees were demanding more. They wanted me to adopt the lifestyle of a brahmacari monk living full time in the ashram as a surrendered disciple of ISKCON's spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada. I was not ready to give up my cherished so-called freedom (It was more like slavery to my senses.) to live the highly regulated life of a monk. But one morning while I was relishing the sweet sounds of the newly released Radha Krishna Temple album from George Harrison and the London Hare Krishna devotees, just by hearing the love in the devotees' voices expressed for Srila Prabhupada I could understand that they were a tasting a sweetness that was inaccessible to me. The love that a surrendered disciple feels for his spiritual master is indescribably sweet because it is completely transcendental to this material existence. Wanting to also taste that sweet ambrosial love that Prabhupada's disciples were tasting at that moment within my heart I also surrendered myself to Srila Prabhupada as his eternal servant. This magic most sublime moment was the pivotal experience of my eternal existence. My surrender to Srila Prabhupada lives with me within my heart eternally as my most cherished asset.

Spiritual initiation is an absolutely necessary step on the pathway to self realization because Krishna says that it is only by becoming a devotee of the Lord's devotee that the Lord will accept us as His devotee. The ten new disciples are as follows:

Rabindra das (from the UK)
Jagadananda das (from Lithuania)
Baladeva das(from Hungary)
Acintyalila devi dasi (from Lithuania)
Laksmipriya devi dasi (from Lithuania)
Satyavati devi dasi (from Bulgaria)
Hemamukhi devi dasi (from Estonia)
Madanasundari devi dasi (from Latvia)
Gita Govinda devi dasi (from Latvia)
Saranagata devi dasi (from Lithuania)

May Krishna bless all of them in their lives as my disciples, followers of Srila Prabhupada, and devotees of Krishna.

Question: How to Quickly Become Impurity Free?

How does one quickly get out of anartha stage, the stage in which the heart is full of impurities?

Your insignificant servant,

Shyama Priya Devi Dasi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Always Stay Connected with Krishna

The way to quickly get free of all anarthas, the stubborn dirt that clings to the heart, is to always be hearing about Krishna, reading about Krishna, vibrating His name and glories, and serving Him and His devotees. In this way you will quickly become free from all anarthas and become firmly fixed in Krishna consciousness.

Relishing the Ultimate Nectar at Every Minute

Why settle for lifestyle that is anything less than the very best? You can relish the ultimate nectar at every minute simply by connecting with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the very source of your existence. All you have to do to connect with Him is to chant His holy names with love:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama
Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Who could have imagined that tasting unlimited bliss could be so simple?

Question: What Does Devotee Association Mean?

Dear Guru Maharaja

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you! All glories to your perfect reply!

In the 1 November 2012 "Thought for the Day" you wrote "When you associate with devotees it does not matter where you are in the material world because when you associate with devotees you are in the spiritual world." Can I know what is the definition of "association"?

Begging your mercy
Virendra

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Six Kinds of Loving Exchange

Association with devotees is defined as follows by Srila Rupa Goswami in the 4th verse of the Nectar of Instruction:

dadāti pratigrihnāti
guhyam ākhyāti pricchati
bhunkte bhojayate caiva
sad-vidham prīti-laksanam

“Offering gifts in charity, accepting charitable gifts,
revealing one's mind in confidence, inquiring confidentially,
accepting
prasada (foodstuffs which have been offered to the Lord)
and offering
prasada are the six symptoms of love
shared by one devotee and another.”

If you will always engage yourself in these six kinds of loving exchange with devotees, your life will be overflowing with transcendental bliss.

The Secret of Success in Spiritual Life

The secret of success in spiritual life is that one must have a bona fide master, receive instructions, from him, and faithfully follow those instructions. If one does this, his happiness and success in life are assured. How do I know this? I have been doing this for the past 41 years, and it works.

Riga: Last Day--Traveling in the Spiritual World

After relishing a week of the sweetest bliss in Riga, Latvia we are now moving on to our next transcendental destination, Lithuania. How can I say "transcendental"" when Latvia and Lithuania are both mundane, bodily conscious, greed oriented countries in this temporary material world? I say "transcendental" because here we are associating with Krishna's devotees. When you associate with devotees it does not matter where you are in the material world because when you associate with devotees you are in the spiritual world.

Relishing the Sublime Nectar of Krishna's Pastimes

Question: Should I Force Myself to Chant?

I just met you in Riga today. But there's a question I didn't ask. You always talk about chanting Hare Krishna. But to be honest, I never liked chanting. It just feels artificial and alien to me, and those words mean nothing. Should I force myself? I generally prefer my meditation to be more of a quiet sort. Maybe combined with some good reading.

Thank you for your time.

Answer: Chant and the Ecstasy Will Come

Since the mind is active by nature and can never be silenced, silent meditation cannot bring one to the perfectional stage. This is why the Vedic wisdom prescribes that you should absorb yourself in meditation on transcendental sound vibration instead of silence.

Even though we were originally situated in transcendental consciousness, because we have been separated from it for millions and billions of lifetimes it appears strange and tasteless to us. But if we will accept the medicine of mantra with the same faith that a patient accepts the doctor’s medicine, although sometimes bitter, by the healing power of the mantra we will gradually reawaken our original state of enlightened consciousness and relish the sweetest bliss at every minute in all circumstances. So the conclusion is that you should chant the Hare Krishna even if you don’t feel like it. In this way gradually you will awaken a state of ecstasy within yourself that surpasses by millions and billions of times the joy you may sometimes feel in silent meditation.
