An Appeal for Your Help

On the order of his spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, Sankarshan Prabhu has dedicated his life for the most urgent work of spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world. The more that Krishna consciousness spreads, the more that the suffering, scarcity, and hate on this planet will be replaced with bliss, abundance and love. This is a golden opportunity for us to do the highest good for all living beings and receive the special blessings of the Lord. Therefore we should, as much as possible, sacrifice our time, energy, and resources to assist Sankarshan Prabhu in his most important work. It's Time to Take Over the World for Krishna

The present day leaders in all spheres of activity: political, educational, cultural, etc. are all failing badly in their duty to be ideal God conscious examples for those who follow them. In spite of our repeatedly requesting these world leaders to embrace the God-centered conception of life, they have not heeded our pleas. Therefore its time now for a new class of God conscious or Krishna conscious persons to emerge and replace these incompetent leaders. Since these are the days of democracy we are therefore calling on the voters all over the world to no longer vote on the basis of party affiliation. We are requesting the voters throughout the world to only vote for those who are pure in God consciousness or Krishna consciousness. If the voters will comply with our request, we will experience a global dawning of peace and prosperity the like of which has not been experienced on this planet for the last 5,000 years.

Question: How to Prolong One's Span of Life?

I am receiving the messages daily since last week. I am happy to go through them because they are so helpful and informative. I request clarification for Srila Prabhupada's statement in his purport to Bhagavad-gita chapter 7 verse 9 as follows, "The duration of man's life is also due to Krishna. Therefore by the grace of Krishna, man can prolong his life or diminish it." Can you please explain how one can prolong or diminish his lifespan?

Narayana Murthy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Surrender to Krishna

When one surrenders to Krishna his lifespan is no longer decided by the stringent, unalterable law of karma. His lifespan is now totally under the control of Krishna, who can then prolong or diminish His devotee's lifespan in reciprocation with the loving mood of his devotee. This is why it is stated in the Sri Isopanisad that if one engages in devotional service he can aspire to live for hundreds of years.

Cannibalism Reported in North Korea

According to a report dated 29 January 2013 on the Times of India website, due to severe famine and starvation in North Korea people are now taking to killing and eating human corpses and even their own children in order to get something to eat. Whatever the case may be in North Korea, scarcity is the natural result when there is demoniac government. When the people are not engaged in performing yajna or sacrifice for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord, nature restricts its supplies. Therefore if we want peace and prosperity for everyone on this planet, there must now be introduced the wide scale performance of sankirtana yajna, the congregational chanting of the holy names of God, all over the world. Any government that does not facilitate the performance of sankirtana yajna is a demoniac government and should be replaced by a government which does facilitate the wide scale chanting of the holy names of God.

Question: What Type of Body Do We Get in Goloka?

I would like to know what body we will get when we go back to spiritual world. Will it be a human body or some other body? Will it be a male or female? We see in the paintings that there are cowherd boys as well as cowherd girls in the spiritual world.

Your servant,
S. U.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Body for the Identity You Already Have

The type of spiritual body you will have when you re-enter the spiritual world depends on what is your actual eternal identity, your svarupa. You get the body which matches the identity that you already have.

Vaisnava Dress is Ecstatic, Cool, and Sublime

Although for meeting the public and introducing our books we members of the Hare Krishna movement may wear ordinary clothing, dressing traditionally as a devotee in a dhoti for men or a sari for women along with tilaka (clay marking on the forehead) and tulasi neck beads is our standard attire.

One may wonder that since we are not these bodies, what do clothes have to do with awakening our dormant Krishna consciousness? It could be stated that what one wears is totally irrelevant for one's Krishna consciousness. After all one can be Krishna conscious in any type of clothing.

But Srila Prabhupada taught us that dressing as devotees is favorable both for our own Krishna consciousness as well as for our teaching the world society the science of Krishna consciousness. I have personally been dressing as devotee for the last 42 years, and I can confirm from my own experience that what Srila Prabhupada has taught us in this regard is absolutely correct. Vaisnava dress does in fact help us to remember who we are as the eternal servants of Krishna, and it also empowers us to speak more authoritatively as representatives of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In this connection Srila Rupa Goswami has stated that if something is favorable for our Krishna consciousness, it is a mistake to give it up. Therefore Vaisnava dress should be worn by devotees as much as possible.

Question: Loving Krishna, Wife, and Family

I understand that true love can only be experienced when we give our love Krishna. What then is the position of our natural love for our wife and family?

Akur

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Love Krishna, Love Everyone Perfectly

When you water the root of a tree all the leaves and branches get watered. Similarly, when you give all of your love to Krishna, your love is perfectly distributed to all living beings throughout the universe including your wife and family. Unless you give your love fully to Krishna, your love for wife and family will remain imperfect being tainted with selfishness. But when you totally give your love to Krishna you become perfect in selflessness and your love shines upon all living beings with absolute purity.

Wonderful World of Krishna Consciousness

The wonderful world of Krishna consciousness is available for all those who would like to enter into it. If one is one willing to give up the painful egoistic disease known as selfishness and become a perfectly loving person, he or she enters into the sublime atmosphere of transcendental existence beyond the miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease. Just as by watering the root of a tree, all of its leaves and branches are nourished, similarly when we give our love fully to the Supreme Person, who is the foundation and the source of all existence, our love then becomes perfectly distributed to all living beings throughout the universe. There is nothing more sublime than this.

Question: How to Not See Women as Sex Objects?

Hare Krishna
Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I read your answer regarding conquering sexual desire. The answer was excellent. You were mentioning a point of seeing every girl as if she were one's own mother, instead of as a sex object. So my friends were asking me, "How can one do that, when the mind is full of lusty thoughts?".

Your servant,

Umesh

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Become Dazzled by the Beauty of Krishna

By regularly chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and giving up sinful activities one will naturally fill his mind with thoughts of Krishna, who is eternally unlimitedly dazzlingly beautiful, instead of with thoughts of the temporary dazzling beauties of this world. One who thus develops a taste for Krishna finds all other tastes to be inferior and a useless waste of valuable time.

So and so said that so and so said that so and so said. This is called hearsay knowledge. It has no value. If one wants to know things as they are, one must hear from the authorities. And who are the authorities? Actually there is only one authority, and that is the Supreme Lord Himself. But those who purely transmit His message as contained in the revealed scriptures without addition or subtraction are also authorities. They are called acaryas or those who teaching perfectly by their example. If we follow the pathway of these great acharyas, we will become fully enlightened and totally blissful, completely free from all anxieties.

Question: Why Am I Not Moved by Chanting?

Dear Sir,

Greeting and respect.

I tried hearing and chanting the holy names of the Lord with the mantra you mentioned in your "Thought for the Day" on 28 December, 2012:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

But unfortunately it didn't move me the same way I feel when I hear a flute for example, not to mention other spiritual and Sufi music and poetry either in Arabic (my mother tongue) or English. Is it because of the language? Or there is something else I am missing?

Thank you and best regard
Yours sincerely,

Fathi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: You Are Now Moved Towards Perfection

Thank you very much for following my advice and trying the Hare Krishna mantra. And I also thank you very much for so sincerely and humbly inquiring from me to see why you did not feel spiritually uplifted when you chanted it. It is not a matter of language. The Sanskrit mantras such as the Hare Krishna mantra do not require that one understand that Sanskrit language in order for them to be effective. Just like everyone can recognize thunder no matter what language they speak, the Hare Krishna mantra powerfully acts upon the consciousness of anyone who chants it, even though for the neophyte chanter the effects are sometimes imperceptible.

Just as the effects of medicine are not always immediately perceivable but yet the medicine is effectively doing its work to cure the patient, similarly the medicine for curing the soul from his entanglement within the cycle of birth and death is the Hare Krishna mantra, even though its effects may not always be immediately perceivable. The patient takes the medicine regularly according to his doctor's order and becomes cured from his disease. Similarly, one who regularly chants the Hare Krishna under the guidance of the expert spiritual master gradually becomes a fully enlightened spiritual being. It is something like a sunrise on a beautiful spring morning. Night does not transform into day all at once. It happens gradually, gradually, slowly, slowly, almost imperceptibly. This is how the awakening of pure love of God takes place within the heart by the regular chanting of the holy names of God. I can assure you that even though you did not experience some noticeable instant results by chanting Hare Krishna, it has eternally transformed your consciousness. Now if you will continue chanting regularly minutes every day and give up bad habits, you will gradually attain a state of consciousness on a par with the greatest spiritual masters in the history of our universe. This is the magnificent, inconceivable power of the Hare Krishna mantra.

Work Cooperatively to Krishnize this Planet

Srila Prabhupada ordered us, his followers, to make the entire world Krishna conscious. Even though such a mission is by material calculations impossible, it becomes indeed possible when his followers leverage and synergize their energy through cooperation. Srila Prabhupada therefore very much emphasized the importance of cooperation. He instructed, "If you work cooperatively, you'll get more strength." And he also gave warning, "Now all my disciples must work combinedly and with cooperation to spread this Sankirtana Movement. If you cannot work together then my work is stopped up. Our society is like one big family and our relationships should be based on love and trust." If the members of the Krishna consciousness movement will stick tightly to Srila Prabhupada's above instructions, in the future it will noted by historians how the Krishna consciousness movement saved the world in its hour of darkest despair.

Question: Why Buddhism Teaches There's No Soul?

Hare Krishna Maharaja,
Please accept my humble obeisances!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

If Lord Buddha was incarnation of Lord Krishna Himself, then why Buddhist philosophy teaches the non-existence of the soul ?

Kiran

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Buddha's Special Undercover Mission

Krishna appeared as Lord Buddha specifically for the purpose of putting a stop to animal killing. In the beginning of the Kali yuga prior to Buddhadeva’s advent, the people of India had become so degraded that they were killing the cows on the concocted plea that cow killing was authorized by the Vedas. They erroneously concluded that in previous times the brahmanas killed cows in sacrificial ceremonies. But the fact is that the brahmanas did not kill cows. They rejuvenated old cows giving them young calf bodies by placing them in the sacrificial fire along with the precise chanting of powerful Vedic mantras.

Since the people at that time were killing cows misusing the Vedas as justification, Lord Buddha appeared and stated that the Vedas are false. In denying the Vedas he taught atheism and the non-existence of soul. He taught the principles of karma and ahimsa (non-violence) that if one kills cows he will suffer the punishment of a severe karmic reaction. In this way, through an undercover mission, he saved the poor cows from being tortured, and paved the way for future Vaisnava acharyas to re-establish pure bhakti in India.

Stepping Joyfully on the Head of Death

When the transcendental airplane came from the spiritual world to carry Dhruva Maharaja back to that eternal bode, he suddenly saw death personified before him. Because he had completely taken shelter of Krishna he was not at all frightened. Rather he took advantage of the presence of death to step on death's head as a footstool for entering into the Vaikuntha airplane.

In the same way those who have completely surrendered their lives in the service of Lord Krishna have absolutely nothing to fear from death. They take death as an enjoyable adventure of traveling to a eternal realm overflowing with bliss and knowledge to personally associate with the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His eternal associates, far, far away from the material world where there is danger at every step.

Tame the Wild Senses or Become an Animal

In material consciousness we are controlled by our wild senses, and in spiritual consciousness or Krishna consciousness we tame our senses. In other words, we bring them completely under our control. One who is controlled by his senses is dragged by them down to the animal kingdom in his next birth. And one who controls his senses becomes elevated in his consciousness, which will guarantee his elevation after leaving his present body. Simple restraint of the senses cannot bring them permanently under control because the senses by their very nature always want some engagement. But if we engage them in the service of Krishna (who is known as Hrishikesha, the master of senses), they will become fully under our control, and we will relish the sweetest happiness at every moment.

Question: How to Conquer Sex Desire?

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances,
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Some days back you shared a nice thought entitled, "Billions of Times Better than Sex," which described the superiority of Krishna consciousness over sex pleasure. I have some questions in this regard:

Is it possible to completely conquer sexual urges with one's mind and intelligence? Is it possible to conquer completely "Mr. Lust", the greatest enemy of this world in this lifetime itself? And if yes, what is the process? Can one be pure in one's mind, thoughts, words and actions while dealing with the opposite sex either in terms of devotional engagements or in the material world outside.

Kindly clarify.

Your servant
Piyush

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: See All Women as Your Mother

Although one may temporarily subdue sex desire by utilization of mind and intelligence, it is not possible to permanently conquer over sex desire in this way. If one wants to permanently evict the rascal tenant, Mr. Lust, from his heart, this is only possible when one gets the higher taste of loving Krishna awakened within his heart. This is accomplished by deeply absorbing your mind regularly every day in Krishna by sincerely chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

By sincerely chanting Hare Krishna every day as much as possible you are personally associating with Krishna, whose association is so wonderful that one who regularly associates with Him will become so satisfied by that association that he will gradually completely lose interest in all forms of material sense gratification even the including the granddaddy of them all, sex desire.

The way to keep a cool brain when dealing with women is to always see them as your mother, not as an object of sex enjoyment. This is why in the Vedic culture every women is addressed as mother except for one's wife.

Atheist Who Found Fault with Gita's Certainty

Last Monday I was speaking with a young atheist named Josh who is reading the Bhagavad-gita As It Is that I sold him a while ago. I asked him what he thinks of it. He told me that a had a problem with it's certainty. He found it objectionable that Krishna would speak with certainty as if He knows the truth. Josh told me that he has a problem with anybody who speaks with certainty. When I asked him if he was certain about that, he was defeated. I pointed out to him the hypocrisy of being certain that certainty is wrong, and he admitted the truth of my statement. He then listened respectfully when I explained to him how he should approach the Bhagavad-gita with a non-biased open mind discerning if the reality he sees through the Bhagavad-gita is a clearer, more distinct reality than the one he sees now.

Billions of Times Better than Sex

Of all the pleasures available in this material world sex is the topmost. Indeed, people are mad after sex, and they experience so much anxiety because they never become satisfied no matter how much sex they enjoy. What people don't realize is that beyond the necessary function of producing children, sex is a completely unnecessary waste of time and valuable energy because it entangles the living being in the misery of false material body identification. They don't realize that if they would only awaken their dormant love for Krishna that they would constantly taste a pleasure that is billions of times better than sex.

Question: Six Questions from Shannan

It's Shannan from the Bhakti Lounge in Toronto. You so nicely answered all of my questions the other night when you spoke here. Also you lead a soul-awakening kirtan. How great it would be to have you lead for a whole day span, or month, or year! Now that's a new year!!

I have a few questions if you may kindly answer me:

1. How qualified does one have to be to receive diksha?

2. What is the importance of connecting to the parampara system ?

3. How can we get past regret and sadness over having wasted so many eons in past lives and years in this life instead of loving Krishna?

4. Please kindly explain how we can always feel, Lord Caitanya, said "humbler than the straw on the street and more tolerant than a tree."

5. Does Sri Krishna accept food from an uninitiated neophyte devotee?

(And last one I promise!)

6. What was the mystery and meaning behind Sri Bhagavan's incarnation as Rsabhadeva?

HARIBOL!

Thank you!

Shannan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Six Answers

The real qualification for diksha or initiation is one's sincerity to serve Krishna and Guru.

Diksha or connecting with the parampara system is of the utmost importance because Krishna says that unless you are the devotee of His devotee you are not His devotee.

It is very good to always regret your past misdeeds. This will make you chaste so that you will not make the same mistakes again. This regret will help you awaken your love for Krishna.

To always remain humble, offer all respects to others without expecting any respect for yourself.

If you sincerely offer your food to Krishna with love, He will accept it.

The Lord appeared Rsabhadeva to preach the principles of religion.

They Carry Prabhupada in Their Hearts

Early Morning, 15 January 2013--As I regularly travel the vast ISKCON world around the globe to lecture on the amazing science of Krishna consciousness I very rarely get the opportunity to associate with the disciples of Srila Prabhupada because at the present time the vast majority of ISKCON devotees are grand disciples of Srila Prabhupada. In other words, most of the devotees nowadays are the disciples of Srila Prabhupada's disciples, not his direct disciples. So when I come to ISKCON New Dwarka here in Los Angeles, where there are so many disciples of Srila Prabhupada, it is always a very, very special treat for me. Already since I have arrived I have been blessed with the association of Ramesvara Prabhu, Madhudvisa Prabhu, and Amarendra Prabhu. As I begin my second day here I look forward to more of such association. This golden association with Srila Prabhupada's direct disciples is becoming rarer and rarer every day as more and more of us gradually depart from this material world to enter into the eternal pastimes of Krishna in the spiritual world. Being with them is especially sweet because they always carry Srila Prabhupada in their hearts. Therefore the more I associate with them, the more I can feel the constant presence of Srila Prabhupada in my life.

Question: Were the Jivas Ever Non-existent?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

I have a few questions. Please find some time to answer them.

Krishna is the origin of everything. Does that means there must have been a time when there was no spiritual world, no material world, and nothing except Krishna with all the jivas and His energies and everything in the body of Krishna. Is that correct?

What made Krishna manifest the jivas and the spiritual worlds and material worlds?

Are the jivas and the spiritual worlds and material worlds still emanating from the body of Krishna. Will they continue endlessly, or is it that Krishna has manifested everything that is possible for Him?

I have subscribed to your e-course, and I always look forward to your "Thought for the Day" and the daily question and answer.

Thank you very much.

Brijesh

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: The Jivas are Eternally Existing

It is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita that there is no time when the living entities, the jivas, did not exist. Krishna is eternally emanating the living entities and their home, the spiritual world, from His transcendental body. He does this to expand His facility for ecstatic loving relationships. While the spiritual world remains eternally manifested, as a facility for those jivas who desire to try to enjoy separately from the Lord, the material world goes through endless cycles of manifestation and non-manifestation.

Ecstatic Initiation Ceremony in Toronto

It was my great joy to formally connect two sincere young men with our Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya disciplic succession on my recent visit to Toronto. On 13 January, 2013 in ISKCON's wonderful Toronto temple I accepted Mayapur Candra Das and Hemanga Das as my duly initiated disciples. Srila Prabhupada explains the great value of initiation in a lecture he gave on 5 January 1974 in Los Angeles as follows:

"Deathlessness begins from the day of initiation. Adau gurvasrayam. As soon as you take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master, your point of deathlessness begins immediately. Immediately. And if you continue the advice and instruction of the spiritual master, or the sastra, then you become deathless. No more death."

All those who are serious to achieve spiritual perfection should qualify themselves for initiation by becoming solidly fixed chanting at least 16 rounds of japa along with the strict avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling.

Question: Second Spiritual World for Non-Devotees?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Today when I was discussing with devotees, this question came up. Krishna created the souls for His enjoyment. Krishna is the Supreme Enjoyer. When the souls love Krishna, they stay with him in the spiritual world. But, when they do not love him, they are forced to come to this material world, which is a place of miseries.

Couldn't Krishna have created another separate spiritual world full of happiness for those who want to enjoy separately from Him? Is it that we are forced to love Krishna, otherwise we have to suffer in the material world.

Thank you,

Your humble servant

Timir Nandi

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Non-Devotees Shun Spiritual Worlds

It is not that the souls who choose to not love Krishna are forced to come to material world. They want to come to a world where they can consider themselves to be the Supreme because they think that this will be their enjoyment. Krishna is fulfilling their desire. He is not forcing them.

Spiritual world means that place where Krishna is served. Therefore one who does not want to serve Krishna will not be happy either in the spiritual world or the secondary spiritual world that you have proposed.

Be a Paramahamsa Even in the Present Day

Srila Prabhupada explains in his wonderful purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 2.9.18 how one can become a paramahamsa (the topmost caliber devotee) simply by hearing from a bona fide devotee of the Lord. He describes how Lord Brahma attained the paramahamsa stage and then states:

"Following in the footsteps of Lord Brahma, any person, even up to this day, can attain the same perfection by following the path of the paramahamsa as recommended herein. Lord Caitanya also approved of this method of self-realization for men in this age. One should first, with all conviction, believe in the Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna, and without making efforts to realize Him by speculative philosophy, one should prefer to hear about Him from the Srimad Bhagavad-gita and later from the text of the Srimad-Bhagavatam. One should hear such discourses from a person Bhagavatam and not from the professional man, or from the karmi, jnani or yogi. That is the secret of learning the science. One does not need to be in the renounced order of life; he can remain in his present condition of life, but he must search out the association of a bona fide devotee of the Lord and hear from him the transcendental message of the Lord with faith and conviction. That is the path of the paramahamsa recommended herein. "

If we take advantage of these sublime instructions from Srila Prabhupada, we can also attain the paramahamsa stage even now as did Lord Brahma in the ancient times.

Bhakti Bliss at the Bhakti Lounge

11 January 2013--On our second day in Toronto our evening venue was the Bhakti Lounge in downtown Toronto. The Bhakti Lounge has a nice relaxed, casual atmosphere to very gently introduce Krishna consciousness to those who are not at all familiar with Vedic culture. I was requested to speak on how one can take control of one's habits. The key in this regard is go to the root level of consciousness. Habits are simply a manifestation of our consciousness. Therefore if one purifies one's consciousness, he automatically purifies his habits. The format was lecture, Hare Krishna kirtan, and informal questions and answers over dinner. I skipped the dinner and focused on answering the many wonderful questions that were asked of me.

Question: How Can I Help the Poor and Hungry?

Whenever I see some animal or some human being suffering due to poverty or hunger I feel so sad for them. I feel miserable because I am not able to help them. Please help me and guide me. Let me know how can I help them.

Rahul

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Give Them Prasadam and Krishna Bhakti

I am very happy to hear that you are feeling compassion for the animals and humans who are suffering in this material existence and that you want to do something to relieve them from their suffering.

This material world is such a place that everyone here is suffering, even those who are wealthy and have sufficient food to eat. Everyone here is suffering because we are all helplessly being dragged through repeated sicknesses to old age and death. And this is going on endlessly lifetime after lifetime after lifetime. This means that spiritually speaking everyone in this material world is poor and hungry.

Therefore the real solution to relieve people from their suffering is to deliver them from the cycle of birth and death by teaching them how to awaken the pure love of God that is sleeping within their hearts. They can be fed sumptuously with Krishna prasadam to satisfy their hungry bellies and then engaged in joyous Hare Krishna kirtan and in hearing discourses on the liberating teachings of the Bhagavad-gita. If such a program is organized on a mass scale the entire human population will be free from anxiety and become unlimitedly happy in Krishna consciousness being liberated from the cycle of birth and death. This is the mission of the Hare Krishna Movement. Kindly assist us in our mission. This will fully satisfy your desire to relieve others from their suffering.

Spirituality 101 at York University

10 January 2013--After traveling for almost 24 hours from Mendoza, Argentina we finally arrived in Toronto, Canada at 2pm. And then after getting situated at our host's house, taking prasadam, and a short break, we headed out to York University where I was scheduled to give a well advertised lecture called "Spirituality 101". The young people were very enthusiastic to receive me. This increased my enthusiasm to speak to them. They very joyously joined with me in Hare Krishna kirtan. I explained to them how a life without knowing who you are is a completely unsatisfying waste of time and how they can become fully enlightened spiritual beings and render the highest service to the suffering humanity by reconnecting themselves with the Supreme Person. After the lecture I went to another room for meeting one-on-one with any students who desired to speak with me further. After a private meeting with a Muslim student to guide him in his personal meditations, practically the entire group came to meet me. They had many questions which I patiently answered. I was extremely enlivened and invigorated by the wonderful questions. Here is what they wrote me and my wife on their thank you card:

Congratulations!! On your 10th year anniversary of your "Back to Home Self Realization" course. We pray for your good health and that you continue to inspire millions worldwide.

Please accept our humble obeisances; All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his stalwart followers.

Question: Offensive to Not Complete My 16 Rounds?

Please accept my humble obeisances

It's a pleasure to listen to your lectures. I am not able to complete my 16 rounds of mahamantra daily. Is it an offense? Can you please guide me? I really want to make progress in my spiritual life after all the personal problems I have had to endure during the last months.

Thank you,
S.N.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: A Devotee Must Maintain His Vow

I am very sorry to hear that you are presently undergoing personal problems. I pray that they may soon be over. I assure you that if you will go deeper into the sublime process of Krishna consciousness, all of your problems will burned away just as the bright sun burns away a dense fog.

Regarding your question about chanting, initiated devotees accept a vow at the time of their initiation to chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra every day on their japa mala beads. So for them it is an offense if they do not complete their 16 rounds quota daily. For others who have not yet accepted initiation it is not an offense, but still they should keep up the 16 rounds daily quota so that they can qualify for initiation.

If one day a devotee is not able to complete his 16 rounds, he can make them up the next day by chanting the missing rounds in addition to that next day’s 16 rounds.

From Summer to Winter in One Day

10 January 2013--After five weeks of traveling in the hot summer in the southern hemisphere from Mauritius to South Africa to Australia to South America, we are now en route from hot Argentina to cold Canada. Krishna describes such dualities in the Bhagavad-gita advising to tolerate them without being disturbed. Yesterday we got on the plane in the hot summer of Argentina. Today we will be getting off the plane in the cold Canadian winter. This world of hot and cold, happiness and distress, and honor and dishonor can never satisfy us because we desire constant, steady happiness. However if we will enter the wonderful world of Krishna consciousness, we will always be delighted at every minute in happy loving relationship with Lord Krishna, the source of everything.

Our Final Day in Mendoza, Argentina

Our final day in Mendoza was quite enlivening because two sincere souls took initiation into our Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradaya as my disciples. I gave them the names Jivananda Das and Dinabandhu Das. Jivananda means the bliss of the soul when he awakens his dormant Krishna consciousness. And Dinabandhu means one who is kind upon the forgetful souls of this age by giving them Krishna consciousness. The devotees saw us off with a kirtan at the airport which was so ecstatic that strangers in the airport, even an official at security, were raising their arms in ecstasy to hear the enlivening Hare Krishna kirtan.

Not according to me, but according to the Vedic wisdom, to be well educated is to know who one is and to be who one is. Question: Why the Girl Was Raped and Murdered?

Respected Sir,

My humble obeisances to you.

The Delhi gang-rape (16 Dec 2012) has troubled and pained the nation as a whole and one and all.

What I seek to know that why did the girl have to die after bearing such demonic violence. She has undergone unbearable physical pain and mental torture about which we cannot even talk. She boarded a bus with a male friend (at around 9 .30 pm) and was attacked by 6 drunken men who brutalized her. Why did such an incident take place with a human being? Has it something to do with past birth? Who were these men and why did they become tool of such heinous a crime?

It is very sad that violence against women is on alarming increase in India. What is the cause of this?

Seeking your blessing

Rashmi Bose

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Atrocities Caused by Demoniac Government

That such atrocities take place are due to the presence of demoniac governments all over the world. In the Vedic age when the leaders were saintly everyone lived peacefully and happily, even the animals. When the government men are themselves cheaters, the cheating naturally filters down to every level of the human society, and the planet becomes more and more of a hell for everyone
.
Unless the world can be ruled by Krishna conscious leaders such atrocities will simply go on increasing more and more. Therefore the Krishna consciousness movement has been started to the save the human population from an ever-increasingly tortuous situation on this planet by creating a new class of saintly leaders all over the world.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Dear Srila Gurudeva, please enlighten me. In the Srimad Bhagavatam 12.2.21: "After all the impostor kings have been killed, the residents of the cities and towns will feel the breezes carrying the most sacred fragrance of the sandalwood paste and other decorations of Lord Vāsudeva, and their minds will thereby become transcendentally pure."

This verse says, "After all the impostor kings have been killed." That means Lord Kalki will kill only the impostor kings and not the other residents, because the next line further explains, "the residents of the cities and towns will feel the breezes carrying the most sacred fragrance of the sandalwood paste and other decorations." Is my understanding correct?

From Sadhana to Prema through Sadhusanga

Simply by sadhusanga, the association of the saintly devotees of the Lord, one can elevated through the three stages of self realization and gradually attain the topmost platform of prema bhakti. This association is based on six types of loving exchanges: giving gifts and service to devotees, accepting gifts and service from devotees, distributing prasadam to devotees, accepting prasadam from devotees, revealing one's mind to the devotees, and open-heartedly hearing from the devotees when they reveal their minds. Simply by the power of this sadhusanga one will gradually be elevated from the platform of sadhana bhakti (devotional service executed according to rules and regulations), to raga bhakti (devotional service performed out of sincere attachment to the Lord), and finally to prema bhakti (devotional service in ecstatic love).

Question: Have You Seen God Face to Face?

Humbly and respectfully I would like to ask you: Have you personally fully realized your own eternal spiritual nature and seen God face to face, eye to eye? Not as in imagining, remembering printed versions, or having chant, music, dance, exercise or drug induced hallucinations. I have had this. They do not satisfy the hunger.

Julio

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: We See God Always in Our Guru's Order

We can understand why your hunger for God was not satisfied. Instead of trying to see God you should try to be seen by God, not by drug induced hallucinations, but by instead always executing favorable devotional service unto Him. Then you will without a doubt see God always in the most amazing and wonderful ways.

Regarding our seeing God: By the grace of our spiritual master we know that we are the eternal servants of Krishna, and we see Krishna always in the form of the order we have received from our spiritual master to make the entire world Krishna conscious. Seeing God is not a one time affair. Seeing God means seeing God at every minute as confirmed in the Brahma Samhita 5.38:

premāńjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena
santah sadaiva hrdayesu vilokayanti
yām śyāmasundaram acintya-guna-svarūpam
govindam ādi-purusam tam aham bhajāmi

"I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is Syāmasundara, Krishna Himself, with inconceivable innumerable attributes, whom the pure devotees always see in their heart of hearts with the eye of devotion tinged with the salve of love."

When Krishna was personally present on this planet many people saw Him but did not recognize Him as the Supreme Lord and thus did not surrender to Him. Therefore seeing God is not very important. What is important is surrendering to God through the order that is directly received from Him, as in the case of Arjuna, or through His order received from His representative, the bona fide spiritual master. This is how you will truly see God at every minute.

There's Nothing Sweeter than Krishna's Name

4 January 2013--I rose early after a few hours sleep on this twelve hour overnight flight from Auckland, New Zealand to Santiago, Chile to relish the sweet nectar of Krishna's holy name. With japa beads in hand I joyfully chanted 16 rounds of japa mala, which is 1,728 repetitions of the Hare Krishna mantra. As I absorbed my mind in Krishna's holy name I was remembering and awed by the fact that there is nothing sweeter anywhere in the entire universe than the sound of Krishna's name. There is no amount of wealth, fame, money, power, sex enjoyment, or eating enjoyment that can in any way compare even to the slightest degree to the sweet transcendental vibration of Krishna's most sublime name. Someday when the world realizes this, there will be a new, unimaginably splendorous dawning of global peace and prosperity. May that day come immediately. I live for this.

Question: Why You Advise to Give Up Sinful Activities?

Dear Gurudeva,

Namaste.

I would like to ask the following questions:

Why do you advise prohibitions like strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling?

Is it not imparting stimulant to negative thinking? Is it not forcing your own rules with negative thoughts on life of devotees?

Instead why not advise them to endeavor to develop divine properties, conduct and actions conducive to divinity?

Yours in yoga

Janardan Mali

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Spiritual Perfection Requires Sinlessness

Your idea to guide people to be divine without instructing them how to avoid activities that contaminate the consciousness is completely impractical. One cannot cultivate divine conduct while he is simultaneously engaging in sinful activities. To do so is like trying to light a fire while at the same time pouring water on it.

You are quite wrong to think that we are imposing some concocted rules on our students. We are guiding our students how to follow the regulative principles of freedom so that they can become pure devotees of Krishna and go back to Godhead. It is clearly stated in the Manu-samhita (5.56) as follows:

na māmsa-bhaksane doso
na madye na ca maithune
pravrttir esā bhūtānām
nivrttis tu mahā-phalā

"It may be considered that meat-eating, intoxication and sex indulgence are natural propensities of the conditioned souls, and therefore such persons should not be condemned for these activities. But unless one gives up such sinful activities, there is no possibility of achieving the actual perfection of life."

Instead of finding fault with the genuine system of bhakti yoga coming from Lord Krishna through the guru parampara channel authorized by Krishna Himself, you should learn how to follow this system and become yourself spiritually perfect. Even if you go on speculating for millions of years, you will not be able to attain genuine liberation.

After zooming on a fast elevator all the way to the 27th floor of a downtown Melbourne high rise residential tower we zoomed even further beyond the stratosphere on the supreme elevator, Hare Krishna kirtan. When, even before my lecture began, I was given a huge stack of questions written down on small pieces of paper I opted to speak on a Bhagavad-gita verse (BG 6.19) with a very short one sentence purport so that I would have plenty of time to answer the ton of questions from the eager audience.

We can always remain high, in an elevated state of consciousness by always hearing about, talking about, and remembering the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Question: What Does Godhead Mean?

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada,

What does "Supreme Personality of Godhead" mean? I know Krishna is the Supreme Personality. But what does Godhead indicate or mean?

Mitu

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Bhagavan, the Head God

Godhead is the English equivalent of the Sanskrit word “Bhagavan.” Godhead means possessing all power, all beauty, all renunciation, all wealth, and all fame. So the Supreme Personality of Godhead means that person who possesses all power, all beauty, all renunciation, all wealth, and all fame. That person is none other than Lord Sri Krishna.

Simply put, Godhead means "the head God". There are so many different gods such as Durga, Indra, and Ganesh. But the god of all the gods, the head god, is Krishna.

"Both by rising and by setting, the sun decreases the duration of life of everyone, except one who utilizes the time by discussing topics of the all-good Personality of Godhead."

Srila Prabhupada has nicely answered your first question as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 3.12.3:

“When the living entity prefers to misuse his independence and glide down towards nescience, the all-merciful Lord first of all tries to protect him from the trap, but when the living entity persists in gliding down to hell, the Lord helps him to forget his real position. The Lord helps the falling living entity glide down to the lowest point, just to give him the chance to see if he is happy by misusing his independence.”

So the Lord allows the degradation of the living being who wants to be degraded so that he can experience it first hand and decide to come back to the Lord. Krishna is not happy to see His beloved children suffering. Therefore He comes again and again to this world and sends His pure devotees to induce us to return back to home, back to Godhead as soon as possible.

The essential philosophy is that you are the eternal servant of God. You foolishly abandoned His service to try to enjoy separately from Him. Now He has given full facility for you to come back to Him by chanting His holy names with love and following the teachings of Bhagavad-gita as it is.

Intoxicated and Liberated

Why be a miserable, stereotypical, run-of-the-mill slave of your senses and of this material world's beastly leaders when you can instead become a liberated soul (jivan-mukta) by taking shelter of the umbrella of Lord Sri Krishna's lotus feet through drinking the intoxicating nectar of Krishna's qualities and activities in enlivening discussions with His devotees?

Question: Who is a Bona Fide Spiritual Master?

Who is a bona fide spiritual master? Does this mean a spiritual master who can deliver one from the afflictions of worldly life? If so, then who can be such a spiritual master?

Thank you very much,
Bitan Bhattacharya

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: He Liberates You from Birth and Death

Yes, the bona fide spiritual master is he who can deliver us from the pangs of material life. He frees us from the miserable cycle of birth and death and delivers us back to our original pure identity in the pastimes of the Supreme Lord in the spiritual world. The qualification for the bona fide spiritual master is given as follows in the Srimad Bhagavatam 11.3.21:

tasmād gurum prapadyeta
jijńāsuḥ śreya uttamam
śābde pare ca niṣṇātaṁ
brahmaṇy upaśamāśrayam

“Therefore any person who seriously desires real happiness must seek a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. The qualification of the bona fide guru is that he has realized the conclusions of the scriptures by deliberation and is able to convince others of these conclusions. Such great personalities, who have taken shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, should be understood to be bona fide spiritual masters.”

Question: How Can I Love God?

How can I love God? I chant His names many times, but now I think I should be regularly doing it.

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Rohan

Answer: Chant At Least 16 Rounds of Japa Mala Daily

If you truly want to love Krishna or God, you should obey his instruction to always be chanting His names. According to the great Vaisnava acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, if one is sincere to awaken the dormant love of God within his heart, he must chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra on japa beads every day and strictly avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. Therefore my best advice to you is that you should live a pure, sinless life and regularly chant at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra daily. This will awaken the dormant love for God that is currently sleeping within your heart and bring you to a state of unlimited happiness.
