With Krishna As Your Best Friend There's Nothing to Fear

When you have as your best friend the most powerful, influential person in all of existence without whose sanction nothing at all can happen, you have nothing to fear under any and all circumstances. That person is none other than Sri Krishna. This is why Krishna's devotees are fearless. And that is why those who distribute Krishna consciousness are the best friends of the human society.

Question: How to Be Blissful When Materially Burdened?

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Dear Gurudeva, I would like to know how can a devotee be blissful when he has a heavy material commitment. I have seen devotees having financial difficulties who are forced to work hard to make money to support their family in many ways. Although we know we are not this body and everything is temporary, some are still forced to struggle materially according to their karma. How can a devotee remain blissful and lead a simple life in such tough situations?

Thank you.

Your humble servant,
Chandra Chaitanya Das

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Work Hard for Krishna

As long as one thinks that his family and household paraphernalia belong to him, he must be in anxiety. It is only when he sees that he is working hard to maintain Krishna's household that he can be free from anxiety. In other words, the home must be established as an ashram, a place where all the family members are being trained how to become pure devotees of Krishna. In this way his hard labor will be transferred into devotional service, and he will taste the ecstasy of bhakti even while he is struggling with his job.

May There Be Universal Spiritual Awakening

The Srimad Bhagavatam calls for a revolution of spiritual awakening throughout the entire universe:

svasty astu viśvasya khalah prasīdatām
dhyāyantu bhūtāni śivam mitho dhiyā
manaś ca bhadram bhajatād adhoksaje
āveśyatām no matir apy ahaitukī

"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other's welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."
- Srimad Bhagavatam 5.18.9

This is what is needed on this planet now more than ever, more than anything else. Therefore all the world leaders should meet together and discuss how this entire planet can be inundated with Krishna consciousness as soon as possible. In this way all the problems that are besieging the human population will be saved in one simple stroke.

The Rise of Spirituality and Decline of Sectarian Religion

Due to an increasing disgust with the dogmas and abuses of sectarian religion, there is now a strong rising interest in spirituality, a non-sectarian approach to spiritual awakening. People are seeking spiritual enlightenment outside of the constraints of sectarian religious organizations. They want to get the pure essence of religion, to have their own personal experience of God. They see that sectarian religion has fomented ignorance, disunity, hate, and cruelty, and they want out. They are now turning away from sectarianism in ever-increasing numbers seeking spiritual enlightenment in a universal, non-sectarian concept of spiritual unity far removed from the sentimentalism and fanaticism of sectarian religion.

The Bhagavad-gita is the perfect book for them. It very wisely teaches the perfection of spirituality by advising the spiritual seeker to eschew all sectarian conceptions of religion and come to perfectional platform of perfect harmony with the Supreme Being through complete surrender unto His will. The beauty of the Gita's teachings is that can one apply them from any walk of life. Whether one is a Christian, a Muslim, a Sikh, a Hindu, a Jew, or a non-designated spiritual seeker, he can remain in his present position and become spiritually perfect by adopting the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita as the guiding principles in his life.

Question: Is Happiness and Distress Based on Karma?

Is it true that a human being gets happiness or distress only on the basis of his karma, i.e. good karma brings prosperity and happiness whereas bad karma results only in complete disaster and downfall?

Amit Gupta

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Only If You Do Not Surrender to Krishna

It is a fact that we enjoy or suffer in this world strictly according to the karmic reactions we receive for our past pious and impious activities. There is, however, one exception to this principle. If one surrenders fully to Krishna, Krishna takes away his past karma and gives him an eternal life of unlimited happiness.

Krishna is God

As a young child I was taught by my parents to believe in God. We regularly went to church every Sunday without fail. But because my understanding of God was very vague and unclear I was not able to tangibly connect with God in such a way that I could become uplifted from the realm of material miseries. But when I discovered God's personal identity as Krishna my life was radically and wonderfully transformed. It is common sense. If I am going to fully devote myself to someone I need to know who he is. If God is a person, He must certainly have a name.

Question: Different Scriptures For Persons in Different Modes?

Please clarify the confusion. Are there different scriptures for persons in different modes of nature? If yes, is it easier and better for one to advance on path of bhakti, by following scriptures according to the mode of nature in which one is situated?

Regards,
Sunil

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Yes, But You Should Follow Srimad Bhagavatam

Yes, there are different scriptures for persons in different modes of nature. For example there are six Puranas for persons in the mode of goodness, six Puranas for persons in the mode of passion, and six Puranas for persons in the mode of ignorance. Out of all these Puranas, the topmost is the Bhagavat Purana, the Srimad Bhagavatam. This Purana is meant for those who want to achieve pure goodness and thus become completely transcendental to the three modes of material nature.

If you want to cultivate bhakti, you should simply follow the Srimad Bhagavatam. If you follow the Puranas in the lower modes of nature, this will be detrimental for the awakening of pure love of Godhead within your heart because they will prolong your entanglement within the three modes of material nature. The Puranas in the lower modes are for those who do not realize the importance of bhakti.

How to Stabilize Your Consciousness

In material life we regularly experience psychological instability while we face varieties of circumstances, some of which are pleasing and some of which are unpleasing. The key to being psychologically stable is to always take shelter of Krishna in all circumstances. What stands in the way of doing this is our false pride. When things go right we want to take credit, and when things turn out wrong we want to blame someone else. What we have to do instead, if we want to enjoy true peace of mind, is give all credit to Sri Guru and Sri Krishna when things go right and accept full responsibility when things go wrong. In this way we will always remain on the liberated platform in a psychological state of perfect stability.

Fascinated By Krishna

Krishna consciousness means to become completely fascinated by Krishna, to experience everything about Him in a complete state of wonder: His unlimited names, His supremely glorious fame, His countless qualities, His phenomenal pastimes, His wonderful associates, His amazing abode, His most profound teachings, and His transcendental paraphernalia. The more we become fascinated by Krishna, the more He reveals Himself to us. He does not reveal Himself to those who do not deeply admire Him.

Question: What Does Individuality of the Soul Mean?

Can you please tell me about the individuality of soul. What does that mean when we say that we are individual souls? Please remove my ignorance and bless us.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: We Are All Unique Persons

Individuality of the soul means that you and I are not the same person. You are a separate person, and I am a separate person. That's why we have different names. It is not that we are the same person. We are two different individuals. Some foolish philosophers speculate that everyone and everything is one, that individuality is false. But the reality is that everyone has their own unique personality. We are all different. Just as there are no two snowflakes which are identical, similarly there are no two persons that are the same because we are all individual souls.

The Material Civilization is a Patent Fiasco

The current material civilization is a patent fiasco because it has ludicrously and completely failed to bring genuine happiness to anyone. All it has to offer is an artificial sense of happiness based on the false concept that the self is the body. In this way it is duping and deluding over seven billion people on this planet right now keeping them tightly bound up in the cycle of repeated birth and death. The Krishna consciousness movement has been started as a glorious attempt to save these poor suffering souls from the quagmire in which they have become so deeply entrenched and entangled. We pray that the world's leaders will all now recognize and appreciate the unlimited value of the Krishna consciousness movement.

Since Krishna is the source of all power, nobody or nothing is more powerful than Krishna. He can thus give perfect, flawless protection to anyone of His choosing. Krishna's devotee knows that no one is a better protector than Krishna. Because Krishna's devotee has taken shelter of Krishna he is sure that Krishna will always protect him in all circumstances. Launching a Global Revolution

The Krishna consciousness movement, under the expert guidance of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, is launching a global revolution for the respiritualization of the entire human society. This spiritual revolution is the greatest innovation the world has ever seen. Some may argue that the light bulb, the internet, Google, or the IPhone are the world's greatest innovations, but this is not a fact. How many people has any of them saved from the cycle of birth and death? Not even one. It is the Krishna consciousness movement which is having the greatest impact on world history. All those who take advantage of this movement will reap the supreme benefit of awakening the dormant love of Godhead within their hearts. And all those who neglect it will be at a great disadvantage for their future happiness. This movement does not require quitting one religion and joining another. This movement teaches one how to become spiritually perfect no matter which religious or philosophical pathway he chooses to follow.

Question: Who Is and Who Is Not a Bona Fide Guru?

What does guru mean? Who becomes guru? Is there any difference between guru and sadguru? How can a neophyte devotee identify a guru? Because of the innocence of the beginners on the self-realization path many unqualified men are posing as spiritual masters and misguiding the people. So how can we know who is real and who is not?

Balaramakrishna

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Bona Fide Guru Purely Represents Krishna's Teachings

Guru literally means heavy and indicates a person who is heavy with Vedic knowledge. He purely represents the sublime teachings of Lord Sri Krishna. The only person who is qualified to be a guru is that person who has fully surrendered himself to a bona fide guru and has been ordered by his spiritual master to also become a guru. One cannot become a guru simply by declaring himself to be a guru.

Sadguru means the eternal guru, therefore if we consider the real meaning of guru, sadguru and guru means the same thing. They both indicate someone who has realized the Absolute Truth as described in the Vedic scriptures and who can convincingly teach that truth to others.

One has to realize who is a bona fide guru not by imagination or by popular votes. Rather guru must be understood by the authoritative statements given in the Vedic scriptures.

For example:

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 11.3.21

tasmād gurum prapadyeta
jijńāsuh śreya uttamam
śābde pare ca nisnātam
brahmany upaśamāśrayam

"Therefore any person who seriously desires real happiness must seek a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. The qualification of the bona fide guru is that he has realized the conclusions of the scriptures by deliberation and is able to convince others of these conclusions. Such great personalities, who have taken shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, should be understood to be bona fide spiritual masters."

Mundadaka Upanisad 1.2.12

tad vijńānārtham sa gurum evābhigacchet
samit-pānih śrotriyam brahma-nistham

"To learn the transcendental subject matter, one absolutely must approach a spiritual master. In doing so, he should carry fuel to burn in sacrifice. The symptom of such a spiritual master is that he is expert in understanding the Vedic conclusion and therefore he constantly engages in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

The bona fide spiritual master very compassionately elevates the common man to the transcendental platform by his divine instructions, which are confirmed in the Vedic scriptures. One must scrupulously distinguish between the bona fide gurus and the charlatans in order to avoid being cheated.

Unlimited Resources at Pure Devotee's Command

By dint of his complete surrender unto Krishna, Krishna's pure devotee has Krishna as his only possession. And because Krishna is the possessor of everything, when the devotee possesses Krishna such a pure devotee's position is as good as being the possessor of everything. Therefore the pure devotee has unlimited resources at his command to engage in the Lord's service. He cannot be lacking in any way. This is confirmed in the following verse from the Bhagavad-gita:

ananyās cintayanto mām
ye janāh paryupāsate
tesām nityābhiyuktānām
yoga-ksemam vahāmy aham

"But those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form, to them I carry what they lack, and I preserve what they have."
-Bhagavad-gita 9.22

For those of us who are not yet completely pure devotees the Lord gives us as much resources as we can properly engage in His service.

Question: How Important is Cow Protection?

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja.
My humble obeisances to you. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

How important is cow protection for Vaishnavas, the devotees of the Lord? Could it be that cow care is one of the kinds of devotional service that attracts Krishna's merciful blessings upon the devotees?

Rima

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: It Is Absolutely Essential for Everyone

Yes, because the cows are very dear to Krishna and because the regular consumption of milk and milk products is necessary for developing finer brain tissues for Vedic understanding, cow protection is indeed one of the activities that attracts the merciful blessings of Krishna and which thus helps us awaken our love for Krishna. When the cows of this world are treated with love and affection the entire world will become peaceful and happy. And as long as the cows are mistreated and abused, this planet will be a hellish place where people are regularly tortured and murdered. Therefore cow protection is absolutely essential for the peace and prosperity of the entire human civilization.

The Glories of Hearing About Krishna

Hearing about Krishna is so wonderful that through it you naturally awaken your transcendental identity as His eternal servant in His transcendental kingdom. The reason that hearing or reading about Krishna is so powerful is that Krishna is personally present in topics regarding Him. Therefore the more you hear about Krishna, the more you associate with Him. This is why you should hear and read about Krishna as much as possible 24 hours a day. This absorption in the topics of Krishna gives you the highest possible benefit because the more you associate with God, the more you become godly. And the more you become godly, the more you become free from all anxiety, not just temporarily, but permanently.

Can Only Born Brahmanas Become Spiritual Masters?

Sometimes we encounter the argument that those born in brahmana families are by birth more qualified to be spiritual masters than those not born in such a family. Someone may argue this on the basis of a statement in the Hari-bhakti-vilasa that if one bona fide spiritual master is born in a brahmana family and another, who is also qualified, is born in a sudra family, one should accept the one who is born in a brahmana family. Our spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, has commented on this statement in his book Teachings of Lord Caitanya as follows:

"This statement serves as a social compromise, but it has nothing to do with spiritual understanding. This injunction is only applicable for those who consider social status more important than spiritual status. It is not for people who are spiritually serious. A serious person would accept Caitanya Mahaprabhu's instruction that anyone -- regardless of his position -- conversant with Krishna science must be accepted as the spiritual master."

If someone argues that only people born in Indian brahmana families can become gurus, they would do well to consider this quote from Srila Prabhupada:

"Our request is that these Europeans and Americans who have taken to Krishna consciousness, just become perfect in the understanding of this science and become guru and deliver the whole world."

This was spoken by Srila Prabhupada in Los Angeles USA on 17 December 1973 while giving a lecture on the Srimad Bhagavatam.

So if you want to find a place where you can be truly happy, perpetually free from all anxieties, you have no option but to return to your original home in the spiritual sky. There are an unlimited number of wonderful planets in the spiritual sky. Out of all of them there is one planet which is most special. That planet is called Krishnaloka. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Become Krishna's Associate by Obeying Sri Guru

Salvation in general means to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. For a devotee of the Lord, salvation specifically means to become an eternal associate of Lord Sri Krishna in His transcendental pastimes in the spiritual sky. There is nothing more useful than such salvation because through it, one becomes eternally free from all anxiety. It is attained by receiving the seed of bhakti within the heart through the combined mercy of Krishna and the spiritual master and then cultivating that seed properly by dedicating one's life fully to carrying out the instructions received from the spiritual master. In ISKCON there are many bona fide spiritual masters who can expertly guide you how to easily attain the supreme perfection in this lifetime. These bona fide spiritual masters are nicely described in the Srimad Bhagavatam 11.3.21 as follows:

tasmād gurum prapadyeta
jijńāsuh śreya uttamam
śābde pare ca nisnātam
brahmany upaśamāśrayam

"Therefore any person who seriously desires real happiness must seek a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. Such great personalities, who have taken shelter of the Supreme Godhead, leaving aside all material considerations, should be understood to be bona fide spiritual masters."

Hearing from the Bona Fide Spiritual Master

If you want to become perfect in Krishna consciousness and escape the cycle of birth and death, you must on an ongoing basis hear the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna from the lotus mouth of the bona fide spiritual master in complete submission along with whatever inquiries are necessary to clarify your understanding. By this sincere hearing and inquiring all the material dirt that has accumulated in your heart over millions of births will be removed, and you will gain entrance to the direct association of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Question: In Spiritual Life Is Everything the Same?

Srila Gurudeva, by the mercy of your disciples many of us were able to get the link telecasting your current Srimad Bhagavatam lecture live on www.lalive.us

I had the following doubt:

It was mentioned that books are the primary basis and lectures the secondary. How in this material world or even among devotees can primary and secondary be explained? Primary always indicates better than secondary, whereas anything spiritual is non different.

So how is it, Srila Gurudeva? The fact I would love to properly understand and also how to present it to others properly.

Your servant,

Shreyas

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: There Are Wonderful Varieties in Spiritual Life

What comes first is not always better. Sometimes what comes second is better. This idea that everything in spiritual life is the same is the conception of the monists. From the Vaisnava point of view we see that there are so many interesting and exciting varieties within the Lord's creation.

Srila Prabhupada has many times said that books are the basis of our Krishna consciousness movement. So who are we to argue with him? If we analyze it carefully with a cool brain, we will see that this understanding is simply a matter of common sense. It is not that Srila Prabhupada has written books to give commentaries of his spoken lectures. It is just the opposite. In his lectures the usual format is that first there is a reading from his books, and then he gives a lecture to further explain what was just read aloud from his book. Of course it is not that what he speaks is any less important than what is in his books. It is just that what he speaks is based on what he has written, not vice-a-versa. I hope this makes it clear for you.

How to Be Sane in an Insane World

If you want to be sane in today's world, you have to be willing to be a nonconformist. You have to be willing to be seen as someone who is different. Why? The entire world civilization is based in the false conception that the body is the self. There is no mentality more insane that this. It is impossible to have true happiness as long as one clings to the bodily conception of the self which gets old and dies. So you have your choice. You can be a miserable conformist or a blissful nonconformist. So now you decide what you want.

Breaking Free from All Material Addictions

How to get free from addiction? Giving up one addiction and replacing it with another addiction is no solution at all. I have seen one gentleman who was addicted to smoking but wanted to give it up. So he replaced his smoking habit with a candy eating habit. The result was that he become very fat. By replacing one kind of slavery with another kind of slavery he simply remained the slave of his senses. Since by nature we are creatures of habit who naturally get habituated in this way or that way, the only solution is to find an addiction that liberates from all anxiety and illusion and make that our habit. In other words instead of being the slave of our senses, we have to become the masters of our senses. That supreme addiction is an addiction to Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When you become addicted to Krishna you automatically become free from all material addictions because Krishna is more attractive that anything or anyone else. Once you become addicted to Krishna nothing else will ever attract you again.

How much material advancement is required for the global civilization to live happy and peaceful life? I understand material advancement can be used in the service of Lord Krishna. But does Vedic literature discourage the use the material advancement that is available now to common man? For example, the internet. Is using it discouraged? How much material advancement was encouraged during the time of the Vedic civilization?

Your insignificant servant,

Answer: As Much As Is Necessary for Krishnizing the World

The global civilization does not require so much material advancement. Economically, sociologically, and ecologically we will be much better off if the world shifts back to a simpler, more agrarian lifestyle. However, just as a thorn can be used to remove a thorn, we should utilize material advancement to whatever extent is necessary to give us a competitive edge for defeating the philosophy of materialism and making the entire world Krishna conscious as soon as possible. There is no greater necessity for the human civilization.

Experiencing the Dualities on the Road

9 January 2014--Our current around-the-world lecture tour has been especially revealing in regards to the dualities of the material world. Yesterday we left Mendoza, Argentina where the thermometer was hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit/ 38 degrees Celsius. And now today we are here in Toronto where tonight it will dip to 12 degrees Fahrenheit/ minus 11 degrees Celsius. Krishna instructs us that we should be tolerant of such dualities. Our travels in the service of Krishna give us a great opportunity to follow Krishna's instruction of tolerating such fluctuations of temperature. Connecting with Lord Sri Krishna's instructions puts one into a state of transcendental bliss.

In Srimad Bhagavatam 8.23.30 it is stated:

avatārānucaritam
śrnvan yāti parām gatim

"If one hears about the uncommon activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His various incarnations, he is certainly elevated to the higher planetary system or even brought back home, back to Godhead."

Is there a difference between the higher planetary system and going back home to the planet of Goloka?

Ravishankar.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Krishna's Devotees Attain Goloka

The higher planetary system is the topmost portion of the material sky and is not our original home. It is the transcendental spiritual sky situated far, far beyond the material sky which is our original home. In that inconceivably wondrous spiritual sky the planet known as Goloka Vrindavana is the topmost planet. Goloka Vrindavana is the destination of all those who are fully devoted to Lord Sri Krishna.

Super Ecstatic Departure from Mendoza

Although our stop in Mendoza, Argentina was very brief, only two days (January 6 through January 8 2014), it was sweet indeed. We relished enlivening kirtans, tasty prasadam, enlightening classes, and wonderful association. And what was especially ecstatic was the last few minutes at the airport before we departed. After we checked in, the security gate had still not opened. So while waiting for it to open we took the golden opportunity to have a wonderful kirtan which magically transformed the mundane atmosphere of the airport into the spiritual world. All of us singing together created a powerful kirtan which attracted the attention of everyone purifying them with the mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Take Advantage of the Guru Within and the Guru Without

The guru within is the Lord within your heart known as the Supersoul. He has been accompanying you for countless billions of lifetimes of your sojourn in the cycle of birth and death as the witness of your activities. When you become inclined to become self-realized for escaping the cycle of birth and death, that Supersoul appears externally as the guru without, the spiritual master who enlightens you and guides you step by step how to attain the perfectional self-realization stage. These two gurus are described as follows in Srimad Bhagavatam 11.29.6:

naivopayanty apacitim kavayas taveśa
brahmāyusāpi krtam rddha-mudah smarantah
yo 'ntar bahis tanu-bhrtām aśubham vidhunvann
ācārya-caittya-vapusā sva-gatim vyanakti

''O my Lord! Transcendental poets and experts in spiritual science could not fully express their indebtedness to You, even if they were endowed with the prolonged lifetime of Brahma, for You appear in two features-externally as the acarya and internally as the Supersoul-to deliver the embodied living being by directing him how to come to You."

If one is intelligent enough to take advantage of these two gurus, he will achieve unlimited happiness in this lifetime and enter into the transcendental pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna at the time of death.

When Our Luggage Did Not Come

When we arrived in Mendoza, Argentina on 6 January 2014 we were among the first to clear customs. But when we got to the luggage claim carousel it was a different story altogether. We waited and waited and waited, and still our luggage did not come. Round and round the carousel went again and again, but still our luggage did not manifest. As seasoned travelers whose luggage has been lost many times we were emotionally prepared to deal with the prospect of lost luggage. But still to feel my connection with Krishna and not let my consciousness get totally engrossed in the duality of luggage/ no luggage, I started chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra. I was not chanting asking Krishna to please make sure that my luggage comes. If I had done so, this would have been a offense because instead of my asking the Lord to engage me in His service, I would have been asking Him to engage in my service. Therefore I was chanting in the mood of begging Krishna to always keep me engaged in His service eternally regardless of whether my luggage comes or not. Thus my mind became completely peaceful without any anxiety of whether our luggage comes or not. And then our luggage appeared.

Hare Krishna Rocks the Universe

In the material world we see that so many musicians come and go, some of them being prominent and influential for some time until they vanish into oblivion and are completely forgotten. But there is one type of music which never loses its power and is so potent that it impacts the entire universe. That music is the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mahamantra. It is so powerful that simply by Lord Caitanya's performance of it 500 years ago in the area of Navadvipa in India a wave of love of God was introduced which will gradually inundate the entire universe. Srila Prabhupada describes this as follows in his purport to Sri Caitanya Caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 13, Text 32:

"One may raise the question how all three worlds became inundated with love of Krishna, since Caitanya Mahaprabhu performed kirtana only in the Navadvipa area. The answer is that Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krishna Himself. The entire cosmic manifestation results from the Lord's first setting it in motion. Similarly, since the sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's desire that it spread all over the universe, the Krishna consciousness movement, in continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of the Krishna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna."

By the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, who is spreading Lord Caitanya's movement all over the world, everyone now has the opportunity to awaken the dormant pure love of God, which has been sleeping since time immemorial in their hearts.

Question: How to Keep Faith When I Can't Go to Temple Often?

I read your daily sayings with attention and learn a lot from them. However, I recently lost my job and since transport is very expensive and the Radha Krishna temple is far away from where I live, how do I keep my association of devotees ongoing? I miss going to the temple but can't afford to do so anymore, and I am finding it hard to keep my faith sometimes when I am tired and discouraged.

Can you provide any guidance on how I can keep my faith alive even if I pray at home?

Many thanks
Anysha

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Always Remember Srila Prabhupada's Teachings

If by force of circumstances you cannot physically associate with the Lord's devotees, you should associate with them constantly within your heart by the method taught by Srila Prabhupada in a letter he wrote to his disciple, Sivananda Sen Das, who was feeling very lonely away from the association of the other devotees:

"You write to say, 'I really miss Prabhupada and my Godbrothers' association so much.' But I may remind you that I am always with you. Wherever I am, you and your Godbrothers are there. Please remember always the humble teachings that you have received from me, and that will keep you always associated with me and with your Godbrothers also."

If you will sincerely follow the above advice of Srila Prabhupada, you will feel strongly connected and protected in your Krishna consciousness even while you are physically separated from the devotees.

Completely Free from All Kinds of Distress

From the highest planet down to the lowest planet, every place in this material world is a place of distress. Some places are more distressful and some places are less distressful. But in each and every place distress is unavoidably present. So what to do? Is there any way out of here? The good news is that there is a way out of this world of distress. Amazingly, there is a world where distress is conspicuous by its absence, in other words, a world which is completely 100% free from all kinds of distress. That world is called the paravyoma in Sanskrit or the spiritual sky in English. That world is attained by those who fully absorb themselves in loving devotional service to the Supreme Person. And what is even more amazing is that even while one is still in the world of distress he can transcend all material miseries by totally absorbing his mind in Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Lord of that sublime spiritual sky. In this way even while one is physically situated in the material world he can simultaneously be spiritually situated in the spiritual sky relishing the sweetest happiness at every minute in a life completely free from all kinds of distress.

Question: Can Lawyers Be Krishna C0nscious?

I have a doubt about lawyers being Krishna conscious because it is their profession to lie. A good lawyer has to be a good liar or even a super liar. The regulative principles do not allow telling lies if one wants to be Krishna conscious. Even if they donate their earnings to Krishna, it is like bribery. The present legal system is like that. What is the way out? I think it is very difficult for criminal/civil lawyers. Others like company lawyers or real estate lawyers do not lie or lie less. Please do you suggest any way out because even they have a spirit soul which needs to attain moksha (liberation)?

From an unworthy servant of your worthy servants,
Best Regards,
Amar

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Yes, If They Offer Krishna the Fruits of Their Profession

Krishna states in the Bhagavad-gita:

"Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kunti, even if such work is full of fault." - Bhagavad-gita 18.48

So even though lying is a fault, if one requires to lie for his profession, he should not give up his profession. He should continue in his profession and offer the fruits of his profession to Krishna as the Lord also states in the Bhagavad-gita:

"Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform - do that, O son of Kunti, as an offering to Me." -Bhagavad-gita 9.27

If one follows the above injunction, he will become spiritually perfect in spite of whatever faults may be present in his material profession.

The Perfection of Spirituality

Krishna consciousness is not a religion. Rather, it is the perfection of spirituality because Krishna orders us to give up all religions and simply take to the path of perfect spirituality. Perfect spirituality means to be in a state of perfect harmony with the supreme source of all existence. When you are in harmony with the supreme source of all existence you are naturally in harmony with everything that exists. This perfect science of spirituality has been passed down from great enlightened teachers who lived in the ancient times going back way before modern recorded history. If one is fortunate to come in contact with a bona fide teacher of this science, he can easily become perfect in spirituality. All he has to do is carefully hear from the bona fide spiritual master and faithfully follow his instructions. In this way he will quickly and easily become situated in the highest perfectional stage of spiritual enlightenment.

The leaders of today's world are a pack of unenlightened fools possessing not even an ounce of a clue of how to solve their own life's problems, what to speak of anyone else's. Under their gross misguidance the human population faces the hopelessness of a life that leads nowhere except to old age, disease, and death. The great tragedy of the modern civilization is that these billions of human beings who have only after great difficulty in the lower species attained this human form of life could have utilized it to become self-realized and thus escape the cycle of birth and death but are now instead being dragged back down the animal kingdom in their next life. Question: What to Do When Someone Tries to Rob You?

How should a devotee react when he is confronted by life threatening situations, for example, being pursued by some robber or dacoits? There is a large number of such evil men in society and anyone could be confronted anywhere at anytime. I am asking this question because recently I was confronted by a drunkard who was threatening me for money. I was pathetically terrified and I was trembling with fear. Somehow I managed to escape by running away as hard as I could. There was no help available around as it was 11:00 pm. What should we do in such situations? Should we act impotently (tolerating the mishap and remembering Krishna) or should we act offensively?

Your humble servant,
Sushant Kulkarni

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Answer: Avoid Being Harmed or Robbed

You did the right thing by running away. The devotee's body and wealth is the property of Krishna. Thus it is his duty to protect them from abused by the demoniac class of men, and he may do whatever is required in this connection. If one can run away from the scene as you have done, this is a good option. Repeatedly yelling out the name of Lord Nrsimhadeva loudly can also frighten, disorient, and weaken the assailant. If one is cornered and is under threat of bodily injury or death, he may do whatever is necessary to protect himself, even if he has to injure or kill his attacker. If there is no other option, it is better to give the thief your money rather than face severe injury or death.

While the quality of your chanting is most important, quantity is also very important because the more you chant, the more the purifying effect of the holy name will naturally improve the quality of your chanting. Because you were chanting only two rounds per day you were not able to get deep enough into the chanting to transcend the unavoidable dualities of material existence. Therefore when a disturbance came you were not able to handle it. The solution is that you must increase the quantity of your chanting, which will increase the quality of your chanting so that you can better cope with the dualities of the material nature. You should not allow yourself to be psychologically thrown off balance by these dualities, which naturally come and go like the changes of the seasons. It is natural that sometimes we are prosperous and sometimes we are impoverished. If you will dive deeply into the chanting, these dualities will no longer disturb your mind.
