Today's Thought:

Our Duty is to Save the World

Our most beloved ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, has given us the duty to save the world from the chaos and misery caused by godlessness. Therefore as his dedicated disciples and grand disciples we must seriously devote our lives for the deliverance of the world. This is the purpose of our lives on this planet. Otherwise we have no purpose at all for being here.

Question: What's Wrong With Having Sex?

I am reading all your articles and all your question-answers sections, which are really mind-opening. Now shall I ask you a question in order to enlighten myself.

What is wrong in having sex, as it is just a pleasure activity, which does not involve any killing of innocent lives, And my second question is, science says drinking alcohol in a limited quantity will only improve our health. So is it okay if alcohol is taken in a minimal quantity?

With a lots of thanks and Regards,

Ramkumar,
Chennai, India

----------------------------------------------------

Answer: By Non-Procreational Sex You Kill Yourself

We never say that there is something wrong with sex. Sex is the means by which we can bring Krishna conscious children into the world. Therefore sex is a wonderful thing. Sex is only wrong when it misused for material sense gratification. The difficulty of indulging in such sex is that this tightens the knot of material identification and keeps you entangled in the cycle of birth and death. Thus by non-procreational sex you are killing yourself. Such sex also leads to the murder of millions of innocent babies every year.

Science says so many nonsense things such as there is no God and no soul. We don't accept the authority of such science. Alcohol drinking is a huge problem in the world. So many murders and rapes are committed by people under the influence of alcohol. Thousands of fatal traffic accidents are also a result of drinking and driving. Many people die prematurely every year due to health complications from the consumption of alcohol. Therefore it is better that it should be given up. We avoid alcohol completely because it gives you a false sense of pleasure that this material world is enjoyable. It is better to always remain sober remembering that his material world is a miserable place so that you can fully absorb your mind in Krishna consciousness and become qualified to go back to Godhead upon leaving this present body.

Today's Thought:

When the Most Unwanted Thing is the Most Valuable Thing

The most unwanted thing in this world is death. Everyone is trying to avoid or postpone it no matter what the cost. But what they do not realize is that the moment of death is the most valuable moment of your entire life because your consciousness at that moment determines your next body. You could become a plant, an animal, a human, or an eternally youthful liberated soul in the spiritual world. It all depends upon your consciousness at that most crucial of all moments, the most valuable moment of death. And if you remember Krishna at that most opportune instant you will immediately revive your eternal identity as His associate in His transcendental abode, Goloka Vrindavana. Therefore you should intensely train yourself to keep your mind fixed on Krishna at every minute.

Question: How to Get More Mercy from the Spiritual Master?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada,

Gurudeva, if I listen to your lectures with rapt attention on a daily basis and try to apply them, even though I am not there in person, will I still receive your mercy? and what are the 10 offences? What else can I do to get more mercy?

Sanjib

--------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Connect With Him Through His Instructions

Even though your spiritual master is not present with you in person, by hearing his lectures and seriously trying to apply the instructions therein you will most assuredly be blessed with his mercy. This is so because the vibrational presence, the instructions of your spiritual master, are far more potent than his physical presence.

The ten offenses are listed by Srila Prabhupada in the Nectar of Devotion as follows:

(1) To blaspheme the devotees who have dedicated their lives for propagating the holy name of the Lord.

(2) To consider the names of demigods like Lord Siva or Lord Brahma to be equal to, or independent of, the name of Lord Vishnu. (Sometimes the atheistic class of men take it that any demigod is as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. But one who is a devotee knows that no demigod, however great he may be, is independently as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, if someone thinks that he can chant "Kali, Kali!" or "Durga, Durga!"and it is the same as Hare Krishna, that is the greatest offense.)

(3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master. (This means you must be fully surrendered to the spiritual master.)

(4) To blaspheme the Vedic literature or literature in pursuance of the Vedic version.

(5) To consider the glories of chanting Hare Krishna to be imagination.

(6) To give some interpretation on the holy name of the Lord.

(7) To commit sinful activities on the strength of the holy name of the Lord. (It should not be taken that because by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can be freed from all kinds of sinful reaction, one may continue to act sinfully and after that chant Hare Krishna to neutralize his sins. Such a dangerous mentality is very offensive and should be avoided.)

(8) To consider the chanting of Hare Krishna one of the auspicious ritualistic activities offered in the Vedas as fruitive activities (karma-kanda).

(9) To instruct a faithless person about the glories of the holy name. (Anyone can take part in chanting the holy name of the Lord, but in the beginning one should not be instructed about the transcendental potency of the Lord. Those who are too sinful cannot appreciate the transcendental glories of the Lord, and therefore it is better not to instruct them in this matter.)

(10) To not have complete faith in the chanting of the holy names and to maintain material attachments, even after understanding so many instructions on this matter. It's also offensive to be inattentive while chanting.

Anyone who claims to be a devotee of the Lord must carefully guard against the above offenses in order to quickly achieve the supreme success, pure love of Krishna, Krishna prema.

To be fully connected with the mercy of your spiritual master you need to be formally initiated by him as his disciple. To qualify for initiation you need to be fixed in chanting at least 16 of the Hare Krishna mantra on japa beads every day without fail and solidly established in the avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling. If you are thus qualified as confirmed by your local ISKCON authority, I encourage you to accept the shelter and initiation from the bona fide spiritual master as soon as possible.

Our Fund Raising Drive Was a Success!

Thanks to Lord Sri Krishna and our kind-hearted donors we hit the target of collecting $80,000 towards getting a temple for ISKCON Austin.

In 1971 Srila Prabhupada personally ordered me to make the Austin center a grand success. For the 43 years since ISKCON came to Austin it has never had a temple building. We have thus been meeting in houses and apartments. Now with the help of 298 of our generous readers we are a step closer to doing this special something for Srila Prabhupada in Austin. We now have $280,000 on hand to help us carry our project to the next level.

Our fund raising drive was for $80,000 because that is how much we were short to purchase a house for $280,000 that we planned to renovate and turn into a temple. We put the house under a purchase contract and had it inspected by a professional house inspector. The results were not good. The house would cost up to $200,000 to renovate. Therefore we considered it wiser to instead buy empty land where we could get a much larger lot for a comparable price and then build a brand new temple building exactly according to our own design.

It is not easy to find what we are looking for in Austin because this city is experiencing a real estate boom. We are limited both by our small budget and by our needing a property where we can have both a temple and an ashram. But we will continue actively pursuing the discovery of a suitable property until we find one. We request all of our readers in the Austin area to keep their eyes open to help us find a suitable property. Also any further contributions will give us the financial to access more properties and are therefore certainly most welcome. They can be made at:

Question: How to Convince Skeptics of Prabhupada's Glories?

Many folks still don't know about Srila Prabhupada. They think he just went to the USA to make money and get residency there. They are not willing to believe his great service and achievements. They say he was just another "Dollar Swami." How to convince such ignorant offenders of Srila Prabhupada's glories?

Your worthless servant,

Many thanks,
Amar

----------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: You Become Glorious

Srila Prabhupada one time said, “You are always saying, ‘All glories to Srila Prabhupada,’ but why don’t you become glorious?"

The point is that just as a tree is judged by the fruit it produces, people will naturally judge Srila Prabhupada by the caliber of his disciples and grand disciples. So if you want to convince people that Srila Prabhupada is glorious, you must become glorious by fully surrendering unto Lord Sri Krishna. Then you will naturally be able to convince the entire world that Srila Prabhupada is glorious.

Don't Serve Your Mind, Serve Your Guru

If you want relief from this miserable cycle of birth and death, you must absorb your life in devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna. And Krishna says that you can only serve Him by serving His representative, the bona fide spiritual master. Therefore what you must do is crystal clear. You must take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master and fully absorb your thoughts, words, and deeds in his loving service. But yet in spite of these profoundly potent instructions of the Supreme Authority, Lord Sri Krishna, if you foolishly serve your mental whims instead of serving your spiritual master, you will remain caught up in this material existence

Question: Can A Sudra Become a Brahmana?

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My question is:

Can a person who is a sudra by dint of how he works develop the guna (nature, behavior, lifestyle) of a brahmana? On the other hand, can a person who is a brahmana by work degrade into a sudra by guna, if he leads an unregulated life? Is his tendency towards brahminical work also affected by such degradation?

Kindly put some light on this matter.
Thanking you in anticipation.

Your servant,
Sushant

--------------------------------------------------------

Answer: If He Is Not Krishna Conscious, He Becomes a Sudra

In this age practically everyone earns their living as an employee, which means that nowadays practically everyone is a sudra. But if such worker-class people take to Krishna consciousness, they automatically become brahmanas, which means knowers of Brahman, the Absolute Truth. In this connection there is a nice Bengali poem:

suci haya muci haya yadi krsna tyaje
muci haya suci haya yadi krsna-bhaje

"If one takes to Krishna consciousness, even if he is born in a family of a cobbler (muci), he becomes greater than a brahmana (suci). However, if one is born in a brahmana family and gives up Krishna consciousness, he becomes a low class man on the level of a muci, a cobbler."

The cobbler is used as the example for a low class man because when a cow dies it is the cobbler who skins the dead cow to get the leather for making shoes. It is not that they would kill the cows for getting meat and leather as is currently become the standard of our demoniac civilization.

Throw Away Your Chains and Become Liberated

You are an eternal associate of the Lord in His transcendental pastimes in the spiritual world. But due to a misuse of your tiny independence you have now fallen into the hellish cycle of birth and death here in this material world where you have been transmigrating repeatedly through the 8,400,000 species, foolishly trying to squeeze some enjoyment out of that place where there is no enjoyment. Therefore it is time now that you come back to your senses realizing that you are not your body, that instead you are the all-blissful, full-of-knowledge, eternal servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna and that you return to that wonderful, ecstatic relationship you once enjoyed with that most amazing Krishna in His unlimitedly splendorous divine lila or pastimes.

Question: I'm Chanting. Why Do I Not Get Happiness?

Hare Krishna, dear teacher,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Gurudeva.

I have been chanting Hare Krishna for more than 6 months. But until today I don't really get happiness. Why is this?

J.K.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Because You Try to Get Happiness

You are not getting happiness because you are trying to get happiness. Instead of trying to get happiness you should be trying to give happiness to Krishna by a sincere mood of love and devotion to Him. When you sincerely try to please the Lord in this way you will joyfully discover that you are swimming in an ocean of unlimited happiness.

Always Depend on Krishna And Never Be Disappointed.

If you always depend upon Krishna, you will never be disappointed in any circumstance because Krishna is the perfect orchestrator of everything. Everything that He arranges for us is done with a good reason out of His pure love for us. Because we are covered by the cloud of maya or illusion, we usually cannot recognize how everything is being arranged for our benefit. But if we will always stick to the basics of chanting at least 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala every day while strictly avoiding illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling--everything will be revealed to us one day and we will fully understand how Lord Krishna has always so amazingly arranged everything so perfectly for all of us.

Question: What To Do When Muslims Criticize My Religion?

Hare Krishna, dear teacher,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
Al glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am a resident of Dubai. Here most of the people belongs to the Muslim religion. As my father is running a business here I am also helping him. But now I am facing a big problem. Our partner and other employees here always talk about their religion and indirectly criticize my religion and belief. My parents taught me to respect every religion. I never believed that one religion is good and other all are bad. I believed the essence of all religions is the same.

Recently one person said to my brother that if he will read their religious book (Qur'an), he will follow Islam not Hinduism. My brother didn't reply to that. But several times I also heard these people are talking about their religion and criticizing ours. But they didn't talk to me in face to face. But if they do that, I may reply to them and of course it will create a fight about religion. When I said about this to my mom, she said to be quiet and don't create a debate about religion. Because of these I am not even interested to be in Dubai itself.

Teacher, what I have to do when these people criticize my belief in front of me? I am disturbed because I don't know how I have to deal with it.

Aswathii R.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Tell Them That You Are A Better Muslim Than They Are

Your understanding of religion is very good, that the essence of all religions is the same. However, ignorant fools understand religion in a sectarian way. They do not understand that Allah is another name of Krishna. Hence when they criticize Krishna they are blaspheming their own beloved Allah. Just see how foolish they are.

Tell them that religion means to develop pure love for God, and that since God is unlimited He has unlimited names. Ask them why are they trying to limit Allah. This is not devotion to Allah. This is an offense against Allah. Tell them that you are better Muslim than they are because you understand the unlimited nature of Allah while they are trying to put a limit or restriction on Allah.

Are You Tasting the Nectar or Poison?

The Sanskrit word for nectar is amrita, which literally means no death. From this we can understand that the only things that are truly nectarean are those which give us immortality. Those things which keep us entangled in the cycle of birth and death, such as sex indulgence, tongue indulgence, accumulation of money, power, and prestige, even though they may sometimes appear to be nectarean, are not factually so. The reality is that they are poisonous. Therefore if you want to taste the real nectar of existence, you need to reconnect with the reservoir of unlimited nectar, Lord Sri Krishna, through reviving your lost loving relationship with Him.

Please allow me to ask you a question:

What is the your vision of homosexuals and lesbians?

Your servant,
Mukunda Madhava das

----------------------------------------------------------

Answer: They Are Most Welcome in Our Movement

Thank you for your sincere prayers. May you be unlimitedly blessed in your spiritual life.

Homosexuals and lesbians are just as welcome as heterosexuals in our movement. Everyone can come to sing and dance with us, attend our classes, and take prasadam (vegetarian food offered to Krishna with love) to their full satisfaction. For this we are inviting the entire world.

In regards to your question, kindly note that sex is only meant for procreation. Any type of sex which does not produce children, such as masturbation, gay sex, condom sex, or birth-control-pills sex should not be indulged in. Such sex is against the regulative principles of freedom because it increases the illusion of thinking oneself to be his body. Therefore anyone who wants to get initiated, whether he is homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, or celibate must vow not to engage in any form of sex enjoyment which is not for procreation. This is the meaning of our regulative principle, "No illicit sex."

Question: How Can I Stop Staring at Beautiful Girls?

Thank you very much for your association which you are providing through the Internet. And thank you very much for your mercy on rascals like me.

I have given up non-vegetarian food long ago and I am not taking any intoxication also. But I am suffering from a big problem. I am not able to control my senses. I am not associating with girls, but whenever and wherever I see a beautiful girl I am not able to control myself from staring at her again and again. I feel how wonderful the girl is, how beautiful she looks. Please help me how can I control myself. I am finding it very difficult.

S.R.

-------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Remember What Is Really Attracting You

Your problem will be solved if you will understand why girls are so attractive. A dead body of a girl will not attract you because it is not the body itself which is attractive. Rather it is the spirit-soul within that is attractive. And the spirit-soul is attractive because it is part and parcel of Krishna, the Supreme All-Attractive Personality of Godhead. So it is actually Krishna that you are being attracted to. But under the spell of maya you are thinking that it is the woman's body that attracts you. A woman's body is nothing but a bag of blood, flesh, stool, urine, and vomit just like your body. So you should always chant the Hare Krishna mantra and always remember these points about the female body. In this way you will lose your infatuation over the enlarged breasts and hips of a woman's body and become solidly fixed in the sweetest eternal ecstasy of Krishna consciousness.

Don't Be a Slave of Your Senses

Don't be a slave of your senses. They are very cruel masters indeed. The reward they give you for a lifetime of dedicated service is old age, disease, and death. Therefore it does not make any sense to give them any more gratification than they require to remain healthy. Especially this applies to the tongue because it is the more voracious of all the senses. One who cannot control his tongue is also not able to control his genitals. Such an uncontrolled person who overindulges his tongue and his genitals becomes very unhealthy, he becomes implicated in volumes of sinful reactions, and he shortens his life. In this next life he will go down to the animal kingdom to get a better facility to enjoy his tongue and genitals because the human life is not meant for sense gratification. It is meant for self-realization. If one will exclusively take only Krishna prasadam, his tongue will naturally be controlled, and he will make steady spiritual progress.

Question: How Can Krishna Have Over 16,100 Wives?

Lord Krishna also had over 16000 wives. I can't understand this. Can you explain why this might be so? Thanks.

Somatee G.

------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: As Easily as an Elephant Picks Lotus Flower

Krishna has unlimited opulence and power. Everything that exists is His expanded potency. Therefore for Him 16,108 wives is a piece of cake. He can easily pull this off with no strain at all to satisfy the desire of His devotees who want to serve Him in the mood of being His wife. He kindly manifests a separate expansion of Himself for each wife so that she never feels like she is sharing Him with 16,107 other wives. Each wife fully has Krishna all to herself. This is the inconceivable potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

If You Love God, You'll Love His Children

A truly God conscious person does not hate any living being because he sees all living beings as children of God. Therefore he respects and loves everyone as his beloved family members. Anyone who tortures and butchers other living beings in the name of God is the most despicable, heinous hypocrite. Such a person's destination is the darkest region of hell. But even such a sinful person can be relieved of all his sinful reactions if he surrenders to Krishna.

Question: Accepting Only Srila Prabhupada As My Guru

Please accept my humble obeisance in your lotus feet.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My question is that if I die without taking any initiation from a spiritual master but instead accept Srila Prabhupada as my spiritual master, will he help me in getting entry into Krishna's abode? I feel that Srila Prabhupada has really bestowed his mercy on foolish souls like me by introducing the Hare Krishna movement. And I have complete faith in the books written by him. So can I accept him as my spiritual master, even though he is physically not present in this world?

Gaurav C.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: If You Do, You'll Take Initiation From His Disciple

You can certainly accept Srila Prabhupada as your siksha guru, your instructing spiritual master, because if you follow his instructions you will definitely become qualified to enter Lord Sri Krishna's abode. He has instructed that you should take initiation from one of his disciples. Therefore since you are a sincere follower of Srila Prabhupada I am sure that you will do so and become fully qualified to go back to Godhead. However, if someone does not want to follow his instructions, their claim to be his follower is false, and they will not be delivered back to home, back to Godhead until they become fully obedient to Srila Prabhupada's instructions.

There Are Never Any Difficulties for the Pure Devotee

When you remember Krishna there are never any difficulties because every situation you face is another blessing from Krishna, another opportunity to absorb yourself more deeply in Krishna consciousness. Conversely, when you forget Krishna, you are thrown into an ocean of unlimited difficulties. Therefore the intelligent person makes it his topmost priority to remember Krishna at every moment. For such a pure devotee there are never any difficulties at any moment.

Question: How to Not Be Disturbed by Atrocities of Terrorists?

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Sometimes when I read or hear about Islamist fanatics my mind gets disturbed. The way these guys are doing bloodshed in every part of the world and the way they are willing to kill every non-Muslim in the world really gives me lot of hard emotions. I fell like that I should join the war against them and protect our people.

I understand that this type of mentality is not good for a neophyte devotee like me. We need to think beyond this body as we are souls but somehow I am not able to get out of this. Every time I am dragged into this by reading news or watching videos on Internet.

Please suggest me a way out of this. Please tell me what should be the mood of a devotee when there is a danger of physical attack based on faith.

G.S.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Increase Your Feelings of Disturbance

Instead of giving up such disturbance, I encourage you to increase your feelings of disturbance because to be disturbed seeing the abuse of others is one the symptoms of a Vaisnava. Devotees cannot tolerate seeing the torture and exploitation of others. Therefore you should not give up your disturbed mentality. Keeping this mentality firmly within your heart, you should dedicate yourself fully to Lord Caitanya's movement of delivering the poor suffering souls of this world from illusion by spreading the Krishna consciousness movement as much as you possibly can during your lifetime. In this way you will be instrumental in bringing out a respiritualization of the human society and the curbing down of the demoniac mentality, which is currently ever-increasingly polluting the human society.

If there is a physical attack of a devotee in your presence, you must do the needful to protect that devotee from harm even at the risk of your own life. On one occasion many years ago in Miami, USA our temple was besieged by armed bandits. They had a gun at the head of one of our women and demanded that the devotees get down on the floor. Instead of co-operating with these rascals I yelled loudly the name of Lord Nrsimhadeva. Momentarily the gun instead was pointed at me. But then soon by Lord Nrsimhadeva's grace the bandits were running like scared bunny rabbits back out into the dark night from where they had come, never to return again.

Bhakti Is What Matters, Not Titles

In the material world everyone is running after titles and position. But a devotee of Krishna, fully realizing the temporary nature of everything in this material world, has no interest in such fleeting mundane achievements. The only position a devotee wants is to be the servant of the servant of the servant of Krishna. With this title and position he is unlimitedly satisfied for all of eternity. Therefore he always humbly serves the Vaisnavas, the devotees of the Lord, relishing the sweetest happiness of pure love of God.

Most Auspicious Initiation Ceremony in Austin

At ISKCON Austin on the most auspicious occasion of Krishna Janmastami I initiated two disciples into the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya sampradaya, the Krishna bhakti disciplic succession coming from Lord Brahma. Anyone who follows this pathway of Krishna consciousness sincerely is guaranteed the highest perfection of being able to personally meet Krishna face to face and associate with Him eternally in His transcendental pastimes without getting sick, getting old, or dying ever again. So it is my sober responsibility and greatest pleasure to accept these sincere souls, Sarvakanti devi dasi and Vrindavanesvari devi dasi, as my disciples in order to help them achieve that supreme perfection.

Question: How Can I Stop Eating Meat?

Hare Krishna, dear teacher,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
Al glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am very much thankful for your reply. I cannot express in words how I felt when I read your reply. My eyes filled with tears. I am starting to chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra.

Dear teacher, I need to inform you one thing. Me and my family are meat eaters. I want to get rid of it. I want to stop eating non-vegetarian food. But I don't know how. Two or three times I have tried it. I stopped for many months. But I was not able to continue. I am not able to get rid of that taste which I used to have for 22 years . How I will control this? Please advise me.

I also want to learn the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, which will help me to know more about Krishna. I wish to learn it from a guru rather than reading from books. How will I fulfill this wish?

A.R.

--------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Take Krishna Prasadam

What kind taste is that you have to relish the blood and flesh of your mercilessly slaughered little brothers and sisters? How can you place this contaminated fruit of murder into your mouth? It is unthinkable. You are eating sin and becoming more and more entangled in the wheel of karma. For every animal that you eat, you will have take to a future birth in that species and be eaten by that very same animal that you ate. So how to give it up once and for all? The answer is very easy. Simply becoming a vegetarian is not enough. You must become a Krishnatarian, someone who eats only Krishna prasadam. As soon as you get a taste for prasadam you will forget your former nonsense material tastes.

You want to learn the Gita from me. This is vey nice. The first lesson of the Gita is that you must not eat meat. You should only eat Krishna prasadam, vegetarian foodstuffs that have been offered to Krishna with love and devotion. As long as you eat meat, you will not have sufficient intelligence to understand the Bhagavad-gita. But if you will chant Hare Krishna and eat only Krishna prasadam, the knowledge of the Bhagavad-gita will be revealed to you in a very powerfully amazing way. So this you must now do.

Sri Vyasa Puja--Srila Prabhupada's Appearance Day

Today is Vyasa Puja, the most auspicious appearance day of my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in this world. He appeared on this day following Janmastami in 1896 in Calcutta, India, an act of unfathomable mercy upon the fallen, condition souls of this world. By the divine potency of his appearance in this world all of the fallen, conditioned souls here will be delivered from the endless cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease. It is my greatest good fortune that he accepted me as his disciple on 12 August 1971 via a letter that he mailed to me and two other boys from London to our ISKCON center in Austin, Texas. By fully taking shelter of him as my eternal spiritual master I have become liberated from this hellish material existence. Question: Should I Start Chanting Hare Krishna?

Hare Krishna, dear teacher,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

My mother worships Devi Mata. So from childhood I also used to do that. But now for almost 4 or 5 years in my house people keep giving me pictures of Krishna and the number of Krishna pictures is increasing. Also in my dreams I see Krishna. But still I never chant Hare Krishna. Recently I am getting some books about Krishna from ISKCON. What is the meaning of all this? Does this mean that I should start chanting Hare Krishna?

Aswathi R.

------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Absolutely!

You are most fortunate that Lord Sri Krishna is so mercifully manifesting Himself to you in so many ways. By all of these events Krishna is telling you that you should begin chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra and fully absorb yourself in devotional service to Him. You will discover all success and happiness in your life when you fully devote yourself to Lord Sri Krishna, who is the god of all the gods including Devi Mata.

Janmastami--The Appearance Day of Lord Krishna

Today is the most auspicious day when Lord Sri Krishna appeared in this world approximately 5,000 years ago. By His appearance He accomplishes many things. He delivers the pious and annihilates the miscreants. He appears along with many of His associates from the spiritual world to display a sample of His transcendental pastimes in the spiritual world for attracting us, the fallen, conditioned souls of this world to come back to the spiritual world to rejoin Him for an amazingly blissful eternal existence with Him in His divine abode. There is no greater cause for celebration than this. Therefore devotees all over the world absorb themselves fully in Krishna consciousness on this day. They completely fast from all eating (water is allowed) up until midnight at which time they participate in an arati ceremony to commemorate Krishna's appearing in this world at midnight. And then they honor a feast of Krishna prasadam.

Take advantage of this holiest of all days to supercharge your Krishna consciousness.

Become Attached to a Sadhu

At the present moment we are very attached to money, women, nice houses, country, society, friends, family, and so forth. Because of these attachments we are tightly bound up by three ropes, which are the three modes of material nature. If one is tightly tied up by ropes, he cannot get free on his own. He can only become untied if he gets the help of someone else. This means that we have to transfer our tendency of being attached to a sadhu, a saintly devotee of the Lord. If we do so, that sadhu will cut through the ropes which bind us and liberate us from our entanglement in the cycle of birth and death.

Question: Am I a Crazy Fanatic?

Hare Krishna, dear teacher,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My Vaisnava friends say that it is not important to chant 16 rounds, that the most important thing is to have good relationships with each other. I am not interested in their thoughts when we talk. It becomes boring to me. They very rarely talk about Krishna. I am not very friendly with them. What is more, they do not understand me when I ask them to do service for Krishna. They say I force things, have too many standards, and the most important thing is to be friendly, to ask them how they are doing, etc. But I want to do service to Krishna, and I don't understand friendship as they understand it.

Now I feel like crazy, not loving, not having many friends and burning to be able to do service. Am I a fanatic? Could You help me understand everything in correct way and be in harmony?

Your servant.

--------------------------------------------------

Answer: They Are the Crazy Fanatics, Not You.

They are the crazy fanatics, not you.

Anyone who tells you that it is not important to chant 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa daily is not your true friend and is not a real Vaisnava. Krishna orders us to chant His names 24 hours a day. So the real friend, the real Vaisnava will encourage you to chant as much as possible 24 hours a day.

Your friends are saying that the most important thing is to have a good relationship with them. But actually the most important thing is have a good relationship with Krishna by fully surrendering unto His instructions. Just like by feeding your belly all the parts of your body are properly nourished, when one surrenders to Krishna he automatically has the best possible relationship with everyone. So the defect in relationship is from their side, not your side. They are the ones who are not maintaining a proper relationship with you.

I am very happy to hear that you are not interested in mundane topics. This means that you are advancing very nicely in Krishna consciousness.

You do not need to have relationships with people who discourage you from surrendering to Krishna. Instead you should base your social life on relationships with people who are trying to fully dedicate their lives to Lord Krishna.

A fanatic is someone who acts without any philosophical understanding. Because you are sincerely trying to philosophically understand things properly according to the teachings of Lord Krishna, you are not a fanatic. It your friends who are acting fanatically without philosophical understanding.

Offer Your Talents in Krishna's Service

Whatever talents and abilities that one has should be used in the service of Krishna. This is the perfection of one's talents. Regarding utilization of talents Srila Prabhupada has stated as follows:

"The more we serve, the more dedicated to Krishna we become; therefore a person should utilize whatever talents he has for Krishna."

"You engage all your talents and energies for realizing God. Krishna consciousness. This is ideal life."

"So our request is that everyone with his talents should establish the authority of the Supreme."

When people join the Krishna consciousness movement they bring their talents with them. But their talents do not stop there because as soon as they engage themselves sincerely in Krishna's service so many new talents will naturally spring forth from their inner being transforming their lives into a beautiful, poetic expression of love for Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Dear Gurudeva,

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!!

From childhood I have heard that work is worship and many times people had told me that karma yoga is recommended for house holders like us. They say that do your work with best of your efforts and it will be counted as your worship. Is it true?

Want to ask which yoga is best and why?

Hare Krishna
Gaurav C.

--------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Work is Karma. Working for Krishna is Karma Yoga.

What you have heard from your childhoold is not true. Doing your work is karma. It is not worship. It is not karma yoga. Karma yoga is when you offer the fruits of your work to Krishna, not when you engage it in the service of your senses and the senses of your family members, which is simply karma. So what people in India call karma yoga is actually karma, and it binds them perpetually to the cycle of birth and death.

The perfection of yoga is to connect yourself with Lord Sri Krishna through loving devotional service because it is only by connecting with Krishna that you can be delivered from this material existence.

Always Trust Krishna and You'll Never Be Let Down

Others may let us down, but in God we can always trust. Krishna has no need to exploit anyone because He already owns and controls everything. He does not have to try to establish His supremacy, like all the power mongers of this world are always trying to do, because He is already automatically the supreme proprietor of everything. Therefore instead of playing any power games, He simply continually bestows His mercy upon His beloved children scattered throughout all of existence. The only reason we are suffering is that we do not acknowledge Him.

Answer: That Depends on One's Power of Determination.

That depends on one's power of determination. If one has sufficient determination, he can surrender instantly. Otherwise, he can do it gradually. Drifting Aimlessly in Outer Space, Whereabouts Unknown

The secret of success in spiritual life is that one should always think, speak, and act in a way that is pleasing to one's spiritual master. If one deviates from this principle, he is nowhere in spiritual life, like an astronaut who has lost contact with his space station or space ship and is drifting aimlessly in outer space with no hope of ever getting shelter anywhere. This is why the great Vaisnava acharya, Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has stated:

yasya prasadad bhagavat-prasado
yasyaprasadan na gatih kuto 'pi
dhyayan stuvams tasya yasas tri-sandhyam
vande guroh sri-caranaravindam

"By satisfaction of the spiritual master, the Supreme Personality of Godhead becomes satisfied. And by not satisfying the spiritual master, there is no chance of being promoted to the plane of Krishna consciousness. I should, therefore, meditate and pray for his mercy three times a day, and offer my respectful obeisances unto him, my spiritual master."

If we take this principle seriously of always trying to please our spiritual master, we will be always happy even in this material world and upon leaving this body we will go back to home, back to Godhead.

Question: Can a Liberated Soul Contact His Family Members?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Could you please tell me for a transcendental liberated soul is it possible for him to contact with his close family members who are still in the material world?

Also, are the family members able to contact the transcendental liberated soul who was living together in the family?

Please explain the method?

Your devotee,

-----------------------------------------------------

Answer: If He is Thinking "Family Members", He is Not Liberated.

If he is thinking, "Family members," he is not liberated. For a genuine liberated soul, all living beings from Lord Brahma down to the insignificant ant are his close family members. Therefore he does not make any distinctions based on the material body, and his mercy is equally bestowed upon all living beings.

These liberated souls are all available to be contacted. Therefore we always bow down to them, praying for their mercy that they will bless us with pure love of God. Anyone who is caught up in family affection is not a liberated soul.

Always Remain Teachable

The secret of how to make steady spiritual advancement is to always remain teachable. If you think you know everything and that you have nothing more to learn, you will be stagnated on the path of spiritual awakening and will make no further progress beyond your current level, which is still steeped in ignorance. On 10 December 1976 in Hyderabad, India Srila Prabhupada explained that even when one has a become a spiritual master, he should always remain teachable. He told his disciples that in the future they would become gurus with their own disciples, but even though they are acting as gurus, they should still remain students. Since the spiritual masters are themselves always teachable, how much even more teachable their disciples must be. The conclusion is that if one is not teachable, he is not really a disciple. He is a disciple in name only, not in reality.

Question: How to Transcend Physical Suffering?

Hare Krishna, Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisance
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

It is the soul that suffers and not the body. But there is a way out of this suffering by becoming Krishna conscious. Is my understanding correct? If one is suffering physically, how to draw back the mind to usual Krishna conscious activities?

Thank you
Your unworthy servant,
L.T.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Go Deep Into Krishna Consciousness

Yes, you have understood correctly. Thank you very much! The technique for drawing the mind away from material miseries and keeping it absorbed on the spiritual platform is to be understood as follows:

The body is just a machine. It cannot feel any pain. A dead body, for example, cannot feel any pain. You can kick it as hard as you want, and it will not protest. So it is the soul situated within the body who feels pain due to his foolish misidentification with the body, not the body itself.

The more deeply and intensely you become absorbed in Krishna consciousness the less you will be distracted by the pains and pleasures that are experienced through the material body. There are many things you can do to absorb yourself in Krishna consciousness. According to Srila Rupa Goswami the three most important things you need to do are:

1. Accept the shelter of the bona fide spiritual master.
2. Take initiation from him.
3. Serve him with respect and reverence.

So we recommend that you seriously adopt the above three items in order to be fully situated in transcendental bliss and relieved from all the distresses of material existence.

Balarama Jayanti--Appearance Day of Lord Balarama

Today in Texas is Balarama Jayanti, the appearance day of Lord Balarama, the expansion of Lord Krishna. He is wonderfully described as follows in the Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 5, Texts 4-11:

"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna, is the fountainhead of all incarnations. Lord Balarama is His second body. These two are one and the same identity. They differ only in form. Lord Balarama is the first bodily expansion of Krishna, and He assists in Lord Krishna's transcendental pastimes. That original Lord Krishna appeared in Navadvipa as Lord Caitanya, and Balarama appeared with Him as Lord Nityananda. May Sri Nityananda Rama be the object of my constant remembrance. Sankarshan, Sesa Naga and the Vishnu's who lie on the Karana Ocean, Garbha Ocean and ocean of milk are His plenary portions and the portions of His plenary portions. Lord Balarama is the original Sankarshan. He assumes five other forms to serve Lord Krishna. He Himself helps in the pastimes of Lord Krishna, and He does the work of creation in four other forms. He executes the orders of Lord Krishna in the work of creation, and in the form of Lord Sesa He serves Krishna in various ways. In all the forms, He tastes the transcendental bliss of serving Krishna. That same Balarama is Lord Nityananda, the companion of Lord Gaurasundara."

This is regarding the Thought for the Day posted on 09-Aug-2014 describing the importance of Krishna's prasadam. I want to ask: Why are we selling Krishna's prasadam in the various centers of ISKCON, the Hare Krishna Movement? Is it justified to give a tag price to prasadam and make a business out of it? Shouldn't we be giving it away freely?

Gaurav C.

Editor's note: Prasadam is vegetarian foods which have been offered to Lord Krishna with love and devotion. Partaking of prasadam bestows great spiritual benefit. One makes spiritual advancement merely by eating.

----------------------------------------------------

Answer: They Are Not Volunteering to Contribute

It is our duty to profusely distribute prasadam to all people. And it is their duty to contribute liberally to support the distribution of prasadam. Because the people are not doing their duty of contributing therefore we are sometimes selling prasadam so that in spite of the miserliness of the people the prasadam distribution can go on nicely for the consciousness elevation of the human society.

Nothing Is More Delicious Than Krishna Prasadam

Our scriptures say that Krishna consciousness begins from the tongue. What are the two functions of the tongue? Tasting and vibrating. So if you will chant Hare Krishna and taste Krishna prasadam, which is vegetarian foodstuffs offered to Lord Krishna with love and devotion, you will experience a most wonderful reawakening of the pure love of Krishna that has been sleeping in your heart for hundreds and millions of lifetimes. There is nothing sweeter than Krishna's names and nothing more delicious than Krishna prasadam.

The Srila Prabhupada Lilamrita wonderfully describes Srila Prabhupada's glorification of prasadam when he visited the ISKCON temple in Miami, Florida, USA in February 1975:

On the second night Prabhupada lectured again. Each talk was lengthy, and he answered all questions. As the last question on the last evening in Miami, one of the devotees asked, "Srila Prabhupada, if someone takes prasadam even once, is it true that they are guaranteed at least a human body in their next life?"

"Yes," Prabhupada replied. "You go on simply eating, that's all. And all of my devotees, they have come to me simply by eating prasadam." As he said this, Prabhupada was beaming, smiling, looking all around. When his glance fell on Abhirama, the temple president, who sat beside him, Prabhupada said, "You, too, Abhirama?" Abhirama looked sheepish and said, "'Yes, Srila Prabhupada."

Prabhupada made other devotees admit their attraction for krsna-prasadam. "You also?" he asked one after another. "You also?" Everyone admitted, until the audience was thrown into laughter and appreciation of prasadam.

"Yes," Prabhupada continued in good humor. "'So we give all facilities. If you cannot do anything, please come and eat with us. All right, thank you very much."

Just see how wonderfully Srila Prabhupada has glorified prasadam and how important it is for our spiritual lives.

Request: Chant One Round for Me

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!!
All Glories to Srila Gurudeva!!
My humble obeisance to you.

I would like to gradually reduce my material activities and improve spiritual activities, whereas my family entanglement is not allowing to concentrate on chanting and mediation properly. Please note that my laziness also makes me avoid spiritual activities.

Although once a week I am getting devotee association, still my devotion to Krishna is decreasing day by day. I am really worried about this, and I am running away from my family responsibilities. Kindly enlighten me how to come across this. And kindly chant one round for me to come out from this material activities.

Your servant,
Sukumar S.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Why Only One Round?

Your responsibility to your family is that you should become Krishna conscious and then you should make them Krishna conscious also. Do not run away from your family responsibility.

Why only one round? My entire life is dedicated to getting you out of this material existence.

Adopt these guidelines from Srila Rupa Goswami as listed in chapter six of the Nectar of Devotion, and you will experience an awakening of love of God within your heart:

(1) accepting the shelter of the lotus feet of a bona fide spiritual master,

(2) becoming initiated by the spiritual master and learning how to discharge devotional service from him,

(3) obeying the orders of the spiritual master with faith and devotion,

(4) following in the footsteps of great acaryas (teachers) under the direction of the spiritual master,

(5) inquiring from the spiritual master how to advance in Krishna consciousness,

(6) being prepared to give up anything material for the satisfaction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna (this means that when we are engaged in the devotional service of Krishna, we must be prepared to give up something which we may not like to give up, and also we have to accept something which we may not like to accept),

(7) residing in a sacred place of pilgrimage like Dvaraka or Vrindavana (this includes making your home as good as Vrindavana by making Krishna the center of your home),

(8) accepting only what is necessary, or dealing with the material world only as far as necessary,

(9) observing the fasting day on Ekadasi and

(10) worshiping sacred trees like the banyan tree (this includes worshiping the sacred tulasi tree).

These ten items are preliminary necessities for beginning the discharge of devotional service in regulative principles. In the beginning, if a neophyte devotee observes the above-mentioned ten principles, sure he will quickly make good advancement in Krishna consciousness.

Today's Thought:

Krishna Is Never Defeated

Krishna is the Supreme Controller. Everything is going on under the influence of His material and spiritual energies. Therefore it is not possible for Him to ever be defeated. Just as Krishna is never defeated, in a similar way any government which is Krishna conscious will never be defeated. In this connection Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in His purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 6.7.24:

"If a government worships the brahmanas, the cows and Krishna, Govinda, it is never defeated anywhere; otherwise it must always be defeated and condemned everywhere. At the present moment, all over the world, governments have no respect for brahmanas, cows and Govinda, and consequently there are chaotic conditions all over the world. "

If the world leaders will take advantage of the sublime teachings of Krishna, global peace, prosperity, and happiness will be the immediate worldwide result. Therefore out of compassion upon them we must try to somehow or convince them the government leaders that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and we are all His eternal servants.

Question: Should We Practice Karma Yoga or Bhakti Yoga?

Hare Krishna Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My question is:

What is the essential difference between karma-yoga and bhakti-yoga? Should we practice karma-yoga, or bhakti-yoga, or both of the yogas?

Kindly clarify my doubts.

Your servant,
Sushant K.

-----------------------------------------------------

Answer: Bhakti Yoga

In this connection Srila Prabhupada describes as follows in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 10.10:

"When a person knows the goal of life but is addicted to the fruits of activities, he is acting in karma-yoga. When he knows that the goal is Krishna but he takes pleasure in mental speculations to understand Krishna, he is acting in jnana-yoga. And when he knows the goal and seeks Krishna completely in Krishna consciousness and devotional service, he is acting in bhakti-yoga, or buddhi-yoga, which is the complete yoga. This complete yoga is the highest perfectional stage of life."

It is clear from Srila Prabhupada's above instruction that we should practice bhakti yoga, not karma yoga. Karma yoga is a beginning phase for those who are not yet ready to come to the stage of bhakti so that they can begin the process of self-realization and gradually come to the perfectional stage of bhakti yoga.

Do Yourself a Favor

Do yourself a favor. Why torture yourself unnecessarily when you could be instead tasting a life of unlimited bliss at every minute. How to do that? It's very simple. All you have to do is absorb yourself 24 hours a day in Krishna consciousness by always thinking about Krishna, hearing about Krishna, talking about Krishna, and serving Krishna. Of course, if you are envious, you won't want to do that. In that case you'll have to stew in your own juices of lust, anger, greed, madness, illusion, and envy birth after birth after birth. So the choice is yours. Give up your envy, surrender to Krishna and taste the highest bliss at every minute, or cling tightly to your envy and remain a slave of illusion to suffer needlessly forever.

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja,

My question is:

As a student I aspire for lofty ambitions in my material life. At the same time I aspire to advance in spiritual life through steady devotional practices to Krishna. My question is: Can we aspire to become millionaires and good devotees simultaneously?

Your servant,
Sushant K.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Be Better Than Trillionaire By Krishna Consciousness

Yes, for Krishna's service you can aspire to be a millionaire. For enlightening the world with the teachings of Krishna we require millions and millions of dollars. So you if you become a millionaire, you can render very valuable service to help us awaken the world to Krishna consciousness. But even more important is that you awaken your dormant Krishna consciousness, which is far more valuable than trillions of dollars.

My spiritual master has instructed me to make the ISKCON Austin, Texas USA center a grand success, and he has also instructed us, his disciples, to become gurus and deliver the entire world. Question: How to Serve Guru When He Has Departed?

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

How can one serve his spiritual master if one is physically far away from his spiritual master or if his spiritual master has departed from this world?

Your humble servant,
Shahvir B.

--------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Serve His Mission

In the spiritual master's absence one should simply serve his orders. The orders received from one's spiritual master are the life and soul of the disciple. They are far more important than his physical presence. In all situations of being with your guru or being separated from your guru, you should continue serving his orders. In this way you will always remain with him for all of eternity.

For example, my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, departed from this world over 30 years ago, in 1977. Even though I am physically separated from him, I am always feeling that he is with me, blessing me and guiding me at every minute because my life is fully dedicated to carrying out his orders to make Austin and the entire world Krishna conscious.

What They Call Science is Actually Nescience

Much of what is nowadays being glorified in the world as science is not truly science. Why? Because it is not being conducted scientifically. It is not following the scientific method, which is based on systematic observation, measurement, and experiment. For example, a gentleman who is proclaimed as the world's leading scientist states as unequivocal truth that everything comes out of absolutely nothing. But where is the systematic observation, measurement, and experiment to confirm his concocted hypothesis? It simply does not exist. No one has ever observed something coming out of nothing, nor is there an experiment that one can conduct in a laboratory to derive something out of nothing. But yet, this foolish concoction is being propounded as the basic truth underlying our existence. This is why Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur says we are living a society of the cheaters and the cheated.

If you want to know things as they really are, you can easily do so without being misled by these rascal so-called scientists. All you have to do is purify your senses, and then you can personally experience that which is the underlying truth supporting all of existence. This truth is described by the greatest scientist in the universe. Lord Brahma, in his Brahma-samhita, text 5.41 as follows:

maya hi yasya jagad-anda-satani sute
traigunya-tad-visaya-veda-vitayamana
sattvavalambi-para-sattvam visuddha-sattvam
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami

"I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is the absolute substantive principle being the ultimate entity in the form of the support of all existence whose external potency embodies the threefold mundane qualities, viz., sattva, rajas and tamas and diffuses the Vedic knowledge regarding the mundane world."

So do yourself a favor. Don't be a blind follower of the so-called scientists. Become a true scientist by following the tradition of those who know things as they actually are.

If You Want Liberation, Be True to Your Guru

Anyone who wants to be successful on the path of self-realization and thus escape the cycle of repeated birth and death, must take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master by initiation and faithfully follow his spiritual master's instructions throughout their entire life. If one deviates from this principle, he cannot expect to go back to home, back to Godhead at the time of death. Due to material attachment, he will be forced to take birth again here in this material world where he must continue to suffer an unending onslaught of sufferings. Therefore those who are intelligent and fortunate accept a bona fide spiritual master and fully dedicate themselves to following the instructions of that spiritual master without deviation.

Question: How to Chant Properly?

I will be eternally grateful to you for showing us the correct path, saving me from impersonalism, and showing me the right way of bhakti.

I have one question:

How to chant 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra properly with enthusiasm?

Amit P.

---------------------------------------------------------

Answer: With Full Attention As In Driving

Just as when one drives a car he steers it carefully with full attention keeping his mind fixed on his driving to avoid an accident, in a similar way the Lord's devotee chants the Hare Krishna mantra carefully with full attention keeping his mind always fixed on the sweet, transcendental sound of Lord Krishna's holy names. In this way he keeps his mind fixed, not allowing it to veer off the path of bhakti into the murky, dangerous realm of material sense gratification. In this way by being in direct contact with Krishna in the form of His name, the devotee taps into an ocean of unlimited happiness and enthusiasm.

Question: Is the Supreme Person One or Two?

Hare Krishna, Guru Maharaja,
Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My question is:

Is the Supreme Being a single person Sri Krishna, or is the Supreme a divine couple: Radha-Krishna? How can the Supreme Person be a couple? My understanding is that the Supermost Being has to be one unique person, and that is Sri Krishna.

Kindly clarify my doubt.

Your servant,
Sushant
Pune, India

--------------------------------------------------------

Answer: The Supreme Person is One

Your understanding is correct. God is one. He cannot be two. Radharani is not the Supreme Personality of Godhead. She is His hladini-sakti, His pleasure potency. Even though she is not the Supreme Person, she is greater than the Supreme Person because she possesses the Supreme Person due to her unparalled love for Him. In this way because she owns Krishna she is also Supreme. This is why in Vrindavan Krishna is addressed as Radhakrishna, or Krishna, the property of Radharani.

It's Hard for Maya to Hit a Moving Target

If you will always stay active in Krishna's service in accordance with the advice of the original time management guru, Srila Rupa Goswami, who said that one should not waste even a single moment by not engaging it in Krishna's service, you will not be an easy target for maya. In other words, maya, the illusory energy, will not be able to capture you. Just as it is difficult to shoot a moving target, one who is always active in the service of the Lord will not become captured by maya.

Question: Should Only Bhagavad-gita Be Studied?

Hare Krishna Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My question is:

The Gita-mahatmya states: "gita su-gita kartavya kimanyaih sastra vistaraih", which means, "One need not read any other Vedic literature. Because Bhagavad-gita is spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself one need only attentively and regularly hear and read Bhagavad-gita. In this age it is not possible for mundane man to read all Vedic literatures. This one book Bhagavad-gita will suffice, because it is the essence of all Vedic literatures and especially spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

Also, it is stated: "ekam sastram devaki-putra gitam" - "Let there be one common scripture for whole world - Bhagavad-gita."

At the same time, devotees are encouraged to constantly hear and read other literatures like Srimad-Bhagavatam, Teachings of Lord Caitanya, Nectar of Devotion, etc. So why is there contradiction in these instructions?

Your insignificant servant,
Sushant K.
Pune, India

-----------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Bhagavad-gita and Scriptures With the Same Conclusion

There is no contradiction. If one is too much limited in time like for example a person who is working two or three jobs, he may study and follow only the Bhagavad-gita and become perfect. But anyone with a normal schedule is encouraged to study along with the Bhagavad-gita those scriptures which present the same conclusion as the Bhagavad-gita, namely that one should fully surrender himself to Krishna. This additional reading will help them to gain a deeper understanding of the Bhagavad-gita and further their progress on the pathway back to home, back to Godhead.
