Today's Thought:

Don't Be a Masochist

Don't be a masochist, unnecessarily punishing yourself by not awakening your dormant Krishna consciousness. Why should you cheat yourself out of eternity, knowledge, and bliss, and punish yourself by remaining a prisoner here in the repetition of birth, death old age, and disease? It just does not make any sense. Throw off your chains of lust, greed, anger, madness, illusion, and envy and come to the liberated platform of pure love God. Once you get the higher taste of Krishna bhakti, you will never dream of going back to the poisonous realm of material sense gratification ever again.

Devotees of Krishna Share Their Bliss With Everyone

Question: Is Envy of Krishna the Only Cause of Coming Here?

Respected Guru Maharaja,
My obeisances at your lotus feet.

I would like to humbly ask you: Is envy of Krishna the only reason for coming down to the material world? Is it also that sometimes Krishna sends a person here to perform some special work to raise His glories, Srila Prabhupada being the perfect example?

Thanks.

Your student,

Janmeajai

Answer: Great Acharyas Also Come Here on a Mission

Yes, you are right. Those who are envious of Krishna relegate themselves to be prisoners here in this material world bound by the chains of the three modes of material nature. Sometimes great liberated souls like Srila Prabhupada are sent by Lord Krishna to this material world to deliver us poor rascals who are imprisoned here. Such liberated souls remain liberated even while they here. They are not chained by the three modes of material nature. They are just like chaplains who visit a prison to teach the prisoners how to love God. Although the chaplains may appear to be locked up in the prison just like the prisoners, they are free to come and go from the prison as they like. I have practically experienced this. Many years ago I went as a chaplain every week to give Krishna consciousness to the inmates at the El Reno Federal Penitentiary in El Reno, Oklahoma, USA. The prisoners were locked up tightly in the prison, but I was free to come and go as I liked. So even though I was in the prison apparently just like the prisoners, actually I was not in the prison at all. In this way great personalities like Srila Prabhupada always remain liberated in the constant association of Lord Krishna even while they appear to be in this material world.

Today's Thought:

Who Are The Actual World Leaders?

Because the present day human society is not God-centered the social fabric is rapidly deteriorating into total chaos. The poet W.B. Yeats has described it in this way in his poem The Second Coming:

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world.

Unfortunately the foolish so-called world leaders do not understand what is the underlying cause of this ever-increasing chaos. They are more concerned with keeping their positions than they are in hearing from bona fide spiritual masters what is the actual solution. Unless and until they agree to be educated by qualified brahmanas, the actual world leaders, in the science of how to perfect the human society, the innocent people of this world are going to be more and more tortured, brutalized, and terrorized by rogues and demons who are factually speaking lower than animals.

Question: When Can I Contribute to Build the Temple in Austin?

Hare Krishna Gurudeva!!!!

We are delighted that the land has now been purchased to build a temple in Austin, Texas USA in pursuance of the order you personally received from Srila Prabhupada to make our Austin center a grand success.

May Krishna continue to inspire you, and may you continue to transform and lead our society to enlightenment. I look forward to making my humble contribution in this noble cause. Let the Lord's innumerable blessings and gifts bestowed upon me be put to the most auspicious use.

Please advise when I can send my contribution.

Pranams.

Anil S.

Answer: You Can Do So Now, If You Like.

Thank you very much for your kind words of appreciation for our humble attempt to make the entire world Krishna conscious. This indeed is the mission of our Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, that the Krishna conscious movement will lead and transform the entire human society. Therefore we pray for that day when the world leaders will start to listen to us and follow our advice. That day will mark the beginning of a new era of unparalelled peace and prosperity for the entire world society. For the leaders to be guided in this way is a not a new invention. This is the system described in the Vedic scriptures. The political leaders are meant to follow the guidance of the qualified brahmanas in order to bring happiness to everyone.

We have not yet begun our official fund raising drive for construction of the new temple because we have not yet gotten an architectural plan and a cost projection. But if you would like to contribute something to help this project get rolling, it will be greatly appreciated, and Krishna will bestow His special blessings upon you. You can do so now at:

Persevere Through All Difficulties

Life in this material world is difficult for everyone. Neophyte devotees also sometimes have difficulties as they struggle to fix their minds in Krishna consciousness and become free from all material attachments. The secret of guaranteed success on the path of bhakti or Krishna consciousness is to always persevere in one's practice no matter what may happen. If the neophyte can maintain stick-to-itiveness in his practice in spite of all obstacles, his attaining the supreme perfection of pure love of God in due course of time is assured.

Question: Can the Jiva Soul Fall Down Twice?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

After going Back to Godhead does the soul return back to material world? I have heard and read that we were part of Krishna's paraphernalia in the topmost abode Sri Goloka dhama and that due to our mistaken desire to enjoy separately from Krishna we have fallen down in material world. So the process of going back to Godhead is once, or is it repeated?

Your humble servant,
Makarand

Answer: "Once Burned, I Learned."

The goods news is that the living entities who fall down into material existence and return back to Godhead have learned their lesson well. They will not repeat the mistake of being envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Of course, since they have free will, if they wanted to try to enjoy separately from the Lord again, they could fall down again. But, "Once burned, I learned." They will not be so stupid to again declare so-called independence from Lord Sri Krishna.

We Just Bought the Land for Krishna's New Temple

We have the greatest auspicious news to share with you all today! Here in Austin, Texas USA on Monday 23 February 2015 we finalized the purchase of 1.27 acres of land for constructing a temple at 13800 Ida Ridge Drive in north Austin. We are eternally grateful to all of you who donated last year in our fund raising drive for getting this land. We were able to pay cash for it. So now ISKCON Austin owns it completely debt free.

Although it was bitterly cold our hearts were warmly beaming with joy. We gathered whatever devotees we could muster to celebrate Krishna's new land with an ecstatic Hare Krishna kirtan. One neighborhood family driving by were so intrigued by seeing us singing and dancing in ecstasy even though it was so miserably cold that they stopped their car for a few minutes and rolled down their windows despite the frigidity so they could enjoy our ecstatic singing and dancing and see what the rapturous celebration was all about

Now we have a wonderful exciting new project to focus on. We are going to get an architectural plan with an accurate cost estimate so that we can kick off our fund raising campaign for this wonderful temple.

When I joined ISKCON forty-four years ago here in Austin in 1971 my beloved spiritual master, ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, personally ordered me to make our Austin center a grand success. Now we are one step closer to achieving that goal. I am now humbly begging all of my disciples, students, readers as well as all devotees of Krishna and lovers of God and truth all over the world to please help us in whatever way they can to make a beautiful temple for Krishna here in Austin. Austin is in many ways becoming a prominent city in the world. Therefore it should certainly have a first-class Hare Krishna temple to inspire and train the Austinites and those who visit Austin in the powerful, liberating science of Krishna consciousness.

Question: Who is a Brahmana?

What is meant by being Brahmana by gunas, by qualification?

Regards,
Parag R. Rane

Answer: A Person Who Possesses Brahminical Qualities

In human society, no matter what culture, there are always four natural divisions, four social orders: brahmanas, ksatriyas, vaisyas, and sudras. Brahmanas are the priestly intellectual class, the head of the social body. Ksatriyas are the administrator-warrior class, the arms of the social body. Vaisyas are the mercantile-farmer class, the belly of the social body. And sudras are the legs, the worker class.

In the Vedic society the leaders were the brahmanas whose advise of how to govern the human society was strictly followed by the administrator-warrior class. In the modern day society the administrator class has chopped off the head of the social body illegitimately usurping the leading role by ignoring the learned, enlightened guidance of the qualified brahmanas. Therefore there is ever-increasing chaos in the human society. One can lose his arms, legs, and even his belly and still survive. But if one's head is cut off, his death is immediate. The brahmanas are the head of the society. When a body is without a head, it is immediately dead.

In the Kali yuga, the age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the unqualified descendants of the former qualified brahmanas have claimed brahminical status on the basis of birth. This perverted act has led to the destruction of the Vedic culture. Krishna clearly states in the Bhagavad-gita that one is known as a brahmana not by his birth, but by his qualification and his activities. The real brahmana is described as follows the Bhagavad-gita:

samo damas tapah saucam
ksantir arjavam eva ca
jñanam vijñanam astikyam
brahma-karma svabhava-jam

"Peacefulness, self-control, austerity, purity, tolerance, honesty, knowledge, wisdom and religiousness—these are the natural qualities by which the brahmanas work."
--Bhagavad-gita 18.42

The Krishna consciousness movement has revived genuine brahminical culture by training up a new class of enlightened spiritual teachers all over the world that can save the human society from spiraling down into total destruction. Now it is up to the administrative class of men all of the world to recognize the leadership of these qualified brahmanas and bring back the happy days of Vedic culture to this miserably suffering world.

Prioritize Krishna and Your Life Will Be Sublime

If you will make pleasing Krishna the number one priority in your life, your life will become unlimitedly joyful, sublime, fulfilling, and satisfying. Actually there is no question of making Krishna the number one priority because He already is the number one priority. It is simply a matter of waking up, realizing the fact, and doing the needful. Just as a fish must remain the water in order to survive, the living entity, being part and parcel of Krishna, must always remain in Krishna consciousness in order to survive and thrive. Emmanuel B.

Answer: ISKCON is Universal. It's For Everyone.

There's no problem with you joining our movement. All the original members of ISKCON were from Jewish and Christian homes. It's only later on after many years that Hindus started to join. In the early days of ISKCON our Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada stated:

Atheist Means Blind Faith Dogmatist

Atheist means blind faith dogmatist, and there is not much more to be said in this connection. Anyone who clings tightly to the dogma that everything comes out of nothing is not using their common sense to see the reality, which is beautifully manifesting all around them at every minute. Everywhere around us millions and millions of times we see reconfirmation of the principle that things come from things. We never at any time see that something comes out nothing. Therefore any sane person can easily deduce the conclusion that there must exist an original thing, a source from which everything has come. Therefore theism is logical, atheism is illogical, and any system of knowledge which is based on atheism is nonscientific and flawed. The so-called scientists who propose an atheistic view of the universe are, according to the dictionary, known as nonscientists.

Question: Does Existence Cease When You Enter the Absolute?

Gurudeva,

Please enlighten me the following proclamation:

When God takes possession of all things your existence ceases to be and you are no more there, and then it is that you have entered into the Absolute.

Your humble servant.
Anil Sarma

Answer: We Already Exist Eternally Within the Absolute

Nothing could be further from the truth. Lord Sri Krishna confirms in the Bhagavad-gita that all living beings existed in the past, they exist in the present, and they will continue to exist into the future for all of eternity. There is no time in the past, present, or future that the living beings are non-existent. They are all eternal emanations of the Absolute.

It's not that we have to enter into the Absolute because we are already eternally existing within the Absolute. Indeed we cannot exist outside of the Absolute because all that exists is contained within the Absolute. Self-realization is simply a matter of waking up and realizing our position as tiny part-and-parcel servitors of the Supreme Absolute Truth, Lord Sri Krishna.

The Topmost Well-Wisher of All

Krishna's pure devotee is the topmost well-wisher of all living beings. He sees everyone, even the plants, animals, insects, birds, and fish as the eternal servants of Krishna. Therefore his only desire is to awaken the dormant Krishna consciousness within the hearts of all living beings. Such a devotee who fully understands and resonates with the innermost desire of Lord Krishna is naturally most dear to Krishna. If by the grace of Lord Krishna we are able to come into contact with such a fully liberated pure devotee, we should take shelter of him, accepting him as our spiritual master, because by his causeless mercy and expert guidance we can quickly and easily become liberated from this material existence and regain our original identities in the most splendorous transcendental kingdom of God.

Question: Why Buddhists Do Not Attain Krishna?

The heart of a fully perfected Buddhist is pure, completely detached from the material world and its desires. His consciousness is clean. So why are the Buddhists unable to attain Krishna? According to Lord Vishnu do they achieve the Brahmajyoti ?

Shubham

Answer: Because They Have Not Awakened Love of Krishna

If one achieves the perfection of Buddhistic nirvana, pure desirelessness, he penetrates the coverings of the universe and enters into the Causal Ocean, which is a neutral position between the material sky and the spiritual sky. In order to go further and become qualified to enter the spiritual sky one must awaken the desire within his heart to lovingly serve Lord Sri Krishna. To attain this Buddhistic nirvana is a most difficult process and is practically impossible for anyone in this age. And even after attaining it one has still not attained the topmost perfection. Therefore it is recommended that in this age of Kali everyone should chant the Hare Krishna mantra and easily qualify themselves to attain the supreme perfection of eternal residence in the spiritual sky.

Your Mercy is All That I Am Made Of

The disciple never thinks that he can surpass his spiritual master in any way, even though externally it may appear that he has done so. For example, Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakura, the spiritual master of Srila Prabhupada, was able to spread the Krishna consciousness only within India, while Srila Prabhupada was able to spread it all over the world. Srila Prabhupada never thought for a moment that he had surpassed his spiritual master. He always knew that whatever he was doing was actually all being done by the mercy of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati and that he was only an instrument in the hands of his spiritual master. In this mood the disciple always gives all credit for whatever he has accomplished to his spiritual master and he prays to his spiritual master, "Gurudeva, your mercy is all that I am made of."

Question: Can We Pray For Others to Advance Spiritually?

Gurudeva, your answers teach me to surrender more and more. My rascal mind is shirking all the time, but I (the soul) am very thankful to you. Please accept my respectful obeisances.

I am asking you to answer the following questions.

Does it make sense to pray for others (asking spiritual advancement for them)? If yes, why and how it works (in case of austerities it is useless to do them for other person)? There are a lot of such prayers in our and other traditions, so maybe it is a duty of Vaishnava?

I apologize if my question was worded incorrectly.

Thank you very much for your care :)

Your unworthy servant,
Amalatma das

Answer: Here is the Ideal Prayer

Yes, we can pray for the deliverance of others. Here is the ideal prayer from the Srimad Bhagavatam:

svasty astu visvasya khalah prasidatam
dhyayantu bhutani sivam mitho dhiya
manas ca bhadram bhajatad adhoksaje
avesyatam no matir apy ahaituki

"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other's welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him." --SB 5.18.9

Question: May We Visualize Krishna to Help Our Chanting?

May we visualize a picture of Krishna or Caitanya while doing japa instead of just repeating the mahamantra with closed eyes? Otherwise, we can loose concentration.

In a CD called "60 Years" someone said, "I cannot see Krishna," and a devotee answered, "You cannot see Krishna, but Krishna sees you".

Please can you answer me this delicate question?

Edmond in Switzerland

Answer: Focus Attention Fully on Krishna's Sound Incarnation

If someone has come to be with you, there is no need to visualize them because they are right there with you. In a similar way, there is no need to visualize Krishna because when you chant His holy name He is already right there personally with you. In this age of Kali the most powerful presence of the Lord is His sound incarnation. Therefore the sound vibration of Krishna's name is much more powerful than any mental visualization that you can ponder. And consequently, you should focus all of your mental energy on Krishna's sound incarnation instead being diverted by any idea of a mental visualization.

When you become a completely pure devotee of Krishna, He will personally reveal Himself to you, face to face, eye to eye. You will not only see Krishna once. You will constantly see Him in an unending eternal festival of super sweet loving reciprocation. So now focus on chanting the Hare Krishna steadily each day under the loving guidance of the spiritual master. Keep yourself free from illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling and that day will come to you when you will behold Krishna in all of His dazzling splendor and all of your desires will be fulfilled.

Regarding our spiritual progress the most important thing we possess is our attitude. In other words, on the path of spiritual progress, our attitude will either make us or break us. Blissful Hare Krishnas

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:

Question: How to Know When I'm Chanting With Pure Love?

Hare Krishna, my dear Gurudeva.

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

By yours and Krishna's mercy, I have been able to stick to chanting 16 rounds or more of the Hare Krishna mahamantra daily. How do I know when I'm chanting with pure love for Krishna and when it is considered as just that I must do it every day? How do I improve the quality of my chanting so that I do it for Krishna only?

Hare Krishna,

Your servant,
Melanie B.

Answer: No Material Motives Means Pure Love

You are not being paid to chant Hare Krishna. Nor are you chanting to receive any material benedictions. Therefore although you are still on the neophyte stage your chanting is already on the basis of pure love. Regarding the stages of chanting, this is compared to a mango. When one purchases a mango, he now has a mango. At the beginning the mango is green. But gradually that unripened green mango becomes transformed into a fully ripened juicy, sweet yellow mango. The beginning stage of chanting is compared to a green mango, and the mature stage of perfect chanting is compared to a fully ripened mango. So you already have the mango of pure love of God. Because you are presently on the neophyte stage your mango is green. But by faithfully chanting at least 16 rounds daily, following the four regulative principles (no illicit sex, not meat eating, no intoxication, and no gambling), and faithfully serving your spiritual master you will naturally and gradually progress to the stage of pure chanting, which is unlimitedly juicy sweet like a fully ripened mango. The secret of how to improve your chanting is to every day sincerely try to chant the most focused and most sincerely devotional rounds that you have ever chanted in your entire life. If every day you focus you mind in this way, very quickly you will attain the perfectional stage of pure love of Godhead.

Bhakti Tidal Wave Will Soon Inundate the World

The sastras or scriptures tell us of a time in the future when the entire world will be Krishna conscious. This prediction is not for some date way, way off in the future such as 427,000 years from now when the Satya Yuga begins. Although the Satya Yuga will certainly be a Garden-of-Eden type age when everyone will be saintly, we do not have to wait that long to get relief from all of this global distress. The sastric prediction I am referring to is that even now during the grossly materialistic age of Kali there will a wonderful global resurgence of pure spirituality. This profound spiritual renaissance began 500 years with the advent of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and will continue expanding and expanding undauntedly until the entire globe is 100% united being fully immersed in pure love of God. This global spiritual rebirth will last for 10,000 years, of which 500 have already passed. At the present this renaissance is still in a seed like state in the form of the Krishna consciousness movement. This seed has been firmly planted by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. It will continue growing and growing until that glorious day when the entire world will be fully absorbed in glorifying the unlimited qualities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna. The way that you can help bring this age to the world is to fully dedicate yourself to awakening your own Krishna consciousness under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master and encouraging everybody else that you meet to do the same. In this way a tidal wave of pure bhakti will very soon inundate the entire world.

Unstoppable Flood of Lord Caitanya's Mercy

Question: How Time Cannot Exist in the Spiritual World?

Hare Krishna!

Dandavat Pranam,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

You have mentioned the following:

In this connection the great Vaisnava acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, 2nd Canto, Chapter 9, Text 11 as follows:

"In the material world everything is created, and everything is annihilated, and the duration of life between the creation and annihilation is temporary. In the transcendental realm there is no creation and no destruction, and thus the duration of life is eternal unlimitedly. In other words, everything in the transcendental world is everlasting, full of knowledge and bliss without deterioration. Since there is no deterioration, there is no past, present and future in the estimation of time. It is clearly stated in this verse that the influence of time is conspicuous by its absence."

I have no doubt about Srila Prabhupada and your writings, just a doubt erupted that the individual souls have fallen from the spiritual world to the material world, Prabhu, is that not a deterioration from the original position?

So can we not say that our past was in spiritual realm, present in the material world, and in future we will reach spiritual sky? So somewhere doesn't the time factor manifest in the spiritual world also?

Hope I am not sounding offending by this question. Thanks a ton for your entire work and being with us always!!!

Hare Krishna!

Answer: There We Celebrate the Eternal Now

Thank you very much for your very moving expression of appreciation of my humble attempt to push forward the mission of Srila Prabhupada all over the world. Whatever success I have had is simply by his grace because personally I consider myself to be nothing more than a fool number one.

In answer in to your questions, please allow me to explain:

The souls who fall from the spiritual world are not deteriorated in any way. Their original pure identity is still intact. It is something like a foolish child who runs away from home. His home and his personal room are still there waiting for him to return with no deterioration. He has not lost his identity as the darling son of his parents. Simply for some time he foolishly neglects it until he realizes what a fool he was to leave his happy home and then he returns home. That's all. Is this clear?

When we return to the spiritual world we will realize that we are always here. It's just that we were foolishly dreaming that we were somewhere else. Therefore in the spiritual world we become completely transcendental to past, present, and future celebrating the eternal now. In other words, time is dream consciousness, and timelessness is awake consciousness. Just like when you are watching a video you are transcendental to the beginning, middle, and end of the video. You can fast forward to the end and watch it first. Then you can rewind to the beginning and watch that next. In the same way the inhabitants of the spiritual world can play with time if they so desire, but they are not under its influence.

The Real Liberation Movement

Nowadays we hear about so many different types of liberation movements: women's liberation, lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender liberation, black liberation, etc. They are all seeking equal rights for persons of those various designations, but they are going about it in the wrong way. On the material platform there can never be pure equality because on that plane by nature's way there will always be dissimilarities. Real equality, true equality only exists on the spiritual platform. Therefore to achieve genuine equality we must elevate our consciousness to the spiritual plane.

Any liberation movement which is based on and thus promotes a bodily conception of the self is not a liberation movement at all. It is a bondage movement. Real liberation means to become free from the bodily conception of the self by reviving the consciousness of the real self within. This revival of consciousness is achieved by reconnecting the individual self with the Supreme Self, who is the source of all existence. The reconnection process is called bhakti yoga, the pathway of divine love. This process is learned from a bona fide spiritual master. Therefore all those who are seeking the platform of pure equality and unlimited happiness are advised to seek out a bona fide spiritual master and learn from him the sublime science of self-realization.

The Krishna consciousness movement has been started for this purpose, to provide everyone in every part of the world access to a bona fide spiritual master who can train them how to revive their original divine consciousness. This is a real liberation movement, a soul liberation movement. Take advantage of it and your life will be eternally sublime.

Is there any difference between past, present, and future in this material world ? What is time?

In this material world there is obviously a vast difference between past, present, and future. But since time is an energy of Krishna, Krishna is not under the influence of time. And the inhabitants of His eternal abode, being fully realized in their qualitative oneness with Him, are also not under the influence of time. Time is only active here in the material world.

In other words, everything in the transcendental world is everlasting, full of knowledge and bliss without deterioration. Since there is no deterioration, there is no past, present and future in the estimation of time. It is clearly stated in this verse that the influence of time is conspicuous by its absence."

So take advantage of this sublime process of Krishna consciousness under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master and you will attain timelessness, an eternal existence with Lord Krishna in His divine pastimes.

When the High Court Judges Are Wearing Tilaka

Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati said that when the high-court judges wear tilaka our Krishna consciousness movement will be successful. Because the Vaisnavas are full of compassion their hearts bleed to see so much suffering going ever-increasingly throughout the world. Therefore they pray that the day will come as soon as possible when all the high court judges in every nation throughout the entire world are wearing Vaisnava tilaka. The pure devotees are prepared to take birth after birth if Krishna so desires to bring that day as soon as possible when the entire world becomes Krishna conscious. How much we are indebted to such spotlessly pure devotees by whose mercy we have been saved from this material existence? We must fully absorb our lives in selflessly serving these pure devotees.

Question: Why Eat Plants? They Have Life Too.

Guru Maharaja, many people when I tell them not to eat animals they question, "Plants have life too. So why do you eat them?" Please suggest me what to say to them in this regard.

Thanks for the Ultimate Self Realization Course. After coming to the office this is my very first business to read "Thought for the Day." This makes my day Krishna conscious.

Thank you very much..

Your most worthless servant,

Answer: We Are Krishnatarians

I am absolutely delighted to learn that our daily Krishna conscious broadcast, "Thought for the Day", is enabling you to have Krishna conscious day every day. This is a dream come true for me that I can be helping others in this way. It is surely the mercy of Lord Sri Krishna.

Regarding your question, Krishna orders us in the Bhagavad-gita that we can only take foods which have been first offered to Him. Since Krishna is a vegetarian, He will not accept any offering of meat. Therefore as the eaters of only Krishna prasadam we have no choice but to be vegetarians also. So actually we are not vegetarians; we are Krishnatarians, those who eat only the remnants of what has been offered first to Krishna.

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Since this material world is a reflection of the spiritual world, does pain exist in the spiritual world?

Your servant,
Gaura Lila devi dasi

Answer: There It's the Highest Form of Transcendental Bliss

Pain in the spiritual world is in its original pure form and is the highest manifestation of transcendental bliss. For example the pain of separation felt by the gopis when Krishna goes with the cowherd boys to herd the cows elevates the gopis to the highest realm of transcendental ecstasy.

This completely sold out servant of Krishna has no self-interest separate from the interest of the Lord. Question: How to Deal With Upset People?

You mentioned that a pure devotee becomes dear to everyone. However there are people who may not appreciate your views even though you are a great spiritual leader. I'm just a neophyte devotee, and I notice that sometimes people get upset if I follow Krishna consciousness strictly by not showing interest in sense gratification. They think I'm being too religious by not being easy-going like them. They don't believe in Krishna, hence I cannot preach to them about Krishna consciousness. How to deal with such situations?

Thank you.

Your eternal servant,

----------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Shower Them With Love

The devotee masters the art of showering everyone with love, making a positive connection with everyone no matter what level they are on. Krishna is all-attractive, and therefore His pure devotee being qualitatively one with Him is also very attractive, not necessarily physically but by the kind-hearted way he deals with everyone. By his compassionate dealings in which represents purely the loving mercy of Krishna he naturally becomes attractive to everyone because there is nothing that people like more than being purely loved without any material motivation.

The duty of the disciple is to hear and inquire submissively from his spiritual master and to always please his spiritual master by being fully obedient to his orders. In this way he will be empowered to be a first class representative of his spiritual master properly conveying his guru's teachings and mood of compassion to the ignorant suffering souls of this world, who are so desperately in need of spiritual enlightenment. Although in the beginning one may not be able to do this very well, if he humbly submits himself to be trained by his spiritual master and those who represent his spiritual master, in due course of time he will become a first class representative of his spiritual master who can properly and nicely assist him in his world deliverance mission.

Question: Can Animals Love?

Hello, I was happy to attend your lecture at University of Cincinnati last night (7 February 2015), and I enjoyed hearing your message. You said only a person can love, therefore the Supreme Being must be a person. But what about animals? Can't they love? (I don't mean to imply that the Supreme Being is an animal!) But just curious if you think animals can love too.

Best regards,
Lorraine

Answer: Animals Are Also Persons

Thank you very much for attending my lecture. I am absolutely delighted that you came, and I am also very delighted that you have written to me.

Animals are also persons, they are not machines. This is one of the reasons why we don't eat them. We see how they can show loving affection to their young. We also see that animals, especially dogs, can be very dedicated to their masters. This is a good lesson for us how we can also be dedicated to those who guide us and protect us. Not only dogs, I have seen an incident of a cat who rescued a small child from the attack of a vicious dog.

The Pure Devotee Comes and Then the Evil Has to End

I fondly remember many years ago back in 1972 when, under the expert guidance of His Holiness Vishnujana Swami, ISKCON had a traveling rock opera, which told the story of how a hippy named Ringer became a devotee of Krishna. I had the good fortune to be a part this preaching program, which was known as the Road Show. On 8 September 1972 at a big pubic auditorium known as the Syria Mosque in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, we performed our rock opera in front of an audience of thousands. Our special guest of honor at the concert was our most beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, who was pleased by our preaching attempt. After the program he commented, "This is Lord Caitanya's special mercy, this show." Part of our opera was a wonderful song called "Jagat Guru". One of lines of the song was, "The pure devotee comes and then the evil has to end. Jagat guru, spiritual master of the universe. Jagat guru, Prabhupada" This line brought me such great joy that it still resonates in my heart even now 43 years later.

This principle of the pure devotee saving the world is confirmed as follows in Srila Prabhupada's purport to Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila 7.83 as follows:

"A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles given by the spiritual master. When the holy name is properly served in this way, automatically the spiritual nature of the holy name spreads; in other words, the devotee becomes qualified in offenselessly chanting the holy name. When one is completely fit to chant the holy name in this way, he is eligible to make disciples all over the world, and he actually becomes jagat guru. Then the entire world, under his influence, begins to chant the holy names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra."

This is the power of the jagat guru. By his pure chanting he has the power to end all of the evil of the world by inspiring everyone to chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra.

You Must Be A Bona Fide Disciple

Just as it is of the utmost importance for you to find a bona fide guru, i.e. a spiritual master who is fully qualified to deliver you back to home, back to Godhead, it is also of the utmost importance that once you find him you must surrender yourself unto him by always obeying him faithfully. That is to say, you have to be a bona fide disciple. Otherwise what is the use of being a superficial so-called disciple? Pseudo disciples are not very much benefited by their show of devotional service. Anyone who wants the full benefit of escaping the cycle of birth and death has to become a bona fide disciple, otherwise they remain rotting in the cycle of birth and death.

Question: Will Everyone Eventually Go Back to Godhead?

Will every soul who has fallen into material existence eventually go back to Godhead?

Shubham Ghanghas

--------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Yes, But Don't Take It For Granted. You Must Endeavor.

Srila Prabhupada states in his book The Teachings of Lord Caitanya:

"Every living entity is destined to reach the Supreme Lord."

So it is a fact that every soul who has fallen into material existence will eventually go back home, back to Godhead. So one may wonder, "If I am destined to go back to Godhead why I should make any endeavor to do so? I can just let it happen naturally when it comes". But he will remain here perpetually until he makes the conscious decision to awaken his Krishna consciousness. In this connection in Melbourne, Australia in 1975 Srila Prabhupada was asked:

"Why do we have to speed up the process? Why not we just let things take their natural course of events if everyone's going back to Godhead ultimately?"

He replied:

"That is a 'good' suggestion, but you rot for the time being. Suppose you are going somewhere, walking, and somebody gives you opportunity, 'Come in my car,' why don't you take advantage of it? You will reach the destination by walking in six thousand years, but if you get the opportunity, in your country there is good. There is staircase and there is elevator. So if you want to go, that 'I shall go by the staircase and reach the upstair at the end of the day when office will be finished,' then you can do that. But if you are intelligent, you shall take the advantage of the elevator. Within a minute you go there. That is intelligence. 'I am going. I shall reach at the end of the day when every office will be closed. Then I will come down again.' If you see that, that you can do -- not very good intelligence. That is not intelligence. We have to take the speediest process. That is intelligence."

So the conclusion is that we should not take our eventual liberation for granted, that we do not have to struggle to attain it. The reality is that we will remain perpetually in the cycle of birth and death until we make the conscious endeavor to absorb ourselves in the devotional service of Lord Sri Krishna.

The Only Solution for a Horrendous Calamity

At the present moment the entire human civilization is completely covered by maya or illusion. Enwrapped in bodily consciousness, i.e. considering their bodies to be their actual selves, everyone is totally absorbed in material sense gratification, which is nothing more than a pathway leading to death. This is an appalling tragedy, a horrendous calamity. When we try to save them with transcendental knowledge they vehemently argue with us due to their stubborn attachment to material senses gratification, the only pleasure they know. Thus their only hope is if somehow or other we can give them at least a sample of the higher taste of Krishna consciousness so that they will realize their foolishness and take advantage of this sublime process of reawakening their original all blissful, all knowing, and all loving state of Krishna consciousness.

Question: How to Use Envy in Krishna's Service?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have a situation:

In college, very often I feel envious towards those of my fellow students who excel more than me in academic studies. I regret being so demoniac as to envy people who are sincerely endeavoring, and who have never hurt me. But I know that since everything emanates from Krishna, everything can be utilized in His service (even vices like lust, wrath etc.). But I am not able to find a way to dovetail my envy in Krishna's service. So, rather than me burning my heart with envy, I humbly request you to give a solution to this problem. In short, how can envy be spiritualized and utilized in Krishna's service?

Thanking you in anticipation.

Your servant,
S.K.

------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Envy Those Who Are More Krishna Conscious Than You

Instead of being envious of your fellow students you should feel sorry for them, those poor souls who have not yet awakened their dormant Krishna consciousness. In spite of whatever material success they may temporarily enjoy, because they are neglecting their duty of the human form of life to awaken their dormant Krishna consciousness and are instead centering their lives around material sense gratification they will be rewarded by material nature with a more suitable body for sense gratification in their next life in the animal kingdom.

So if you want to use envy in the service of Krishna, you should be envious of those who excel you in Krishna consciousness, not in material studies, and then try very hard to please Krishna like they are doing, so that Krishna will notice you also.

Who is Really Being Dogmatic?

On Saturday 7 February when I was lecturing on the science of self-realization at the University of Cincinnati a member of the audience challenged me that I was being dogmatic when in my lecture I rejected as blind faith dogma the proclamation made by a famous scientist that everything comes out of absolutely nothing. Even though there is not even one slight shred of scientific empirical evidence to be found anywhere to support this theory, I was expected by my challenger to blindly accept it simply because it was stated by a famous scientist. So who is really being dogmatic?

We should never accept things dogmatically on the basis of blind faith. Rather we should use intelligence and reason before we draw conclusions. We human beings have been endowed by God with advanced intelligence to understand what is the Absolute Truth. So use it or lose it. We must properly utilize our advanced-more-than-the-animals intelligence. But unfortunately our modern day educational system has trained us to be dogmatic blind followers. As soon as we hear some concept outside of the box of our accepted doctrines instead of open-mindedly considering it, we immediately blindly label it is at dogma. What can I say? In this way we are dogmatically relegating ourselves to ignorance and to devolving to a lower species in our next life. Therefore instead of going down to the animal kingdom in our next birth we should shun all forms of dogmatic thinking and learn how to think outside of the box. This is real human life. This is liberation.

Question: How to Get Satisfaction in Chanting?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

When I am chanting there are no emotions anymore. And this is a long time like this. This makes me worried. Have I lost the connection? How to make Krishna pleased?

But now I read Srila Prabhupada's books. There is nectar. There is sacred emotion.

You are my spiritual master. How can I serve you? Do you accept me as your disciple?

You wrote in my Bhagavad-gita, "Become Krishna conscious now." How to do that? I try to think about Krishna and you as much as possible. Please guide me. Thank you.

I love you.

K.G.
Latvia.

----------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Keep Digging Until You Hit the Treasure.

Rest assured that the pure emotion of love of God is there within you right now. This unlimited good fortune is simply buried very deeply now by the thick, hard dirt of material consciousness. Even though you don’t see the gold right now, you should keep digging because once you dig deep enough you will uncover that inconceivably wonderful treasure and all of your desire for knowledge, love, and happiness will be completely fulfilled for all of eternity. So now even if you get a little sweaty and tired working hard to uncover the treasure, you should keep on digging with undiminished enthusiasm. The supreme perfection of pure Krishna consciousness will soon be yours.

You have not lost your connection. Krishna is very pleased by your dedicated endeavor.

You are fortunate indeed to receive the special mercy of Srila Prabhupada that you are tasting nectar and experiencing sacred emotion by reading his books. This is the wonderful compassion of Krishna’s pure devotee upon you.

To someone who is aspiring to become my initiated disciple my instruction is the same as the instruction to my initiated disciple. Fix yourself in sadhana bhakti by chanting at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra every day on your japa mala beads and by strictly avoid the four pillars of sinful life (illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling). Plus my humble request is that you should fully absorb your thoughts, words, and deeds in assisting me in the most wonderful mission given to us Srila Prabhupada to make the entire world Krishna conscious as soon as possible.

So if you want real pleasure and satisfaction you have no option except to turn to Krishna, who is the reservoir of unlimited pleasure and satisfaction. How to connect with Krishna is not difficult. In this age of Kali, Krishna is most accessible in the form of His holy names. Therefore if you will chant the Hare Krishna mantra with focus and devotion, you will experience genuine spiritual happiness beyond all the suffering of material existence. Question: How to Be Krishna Conscious in a Hectic Lifestyle?

It is extremely difficult for anyone who is having a lifestyle with hectic schedules to practice Krishna consciousness. What would you advise?

What is focus of mind and how to utilize it for God/Krishna?

Who is greater, circumstances or Krishna?

Regards,
P.R.

----------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Do You Not Eat When Life Gets Hectic? Feed Your Soul.

Are you so busy that you do not find time to eat? No, you find time to eat because you have to eat in order to survive. But are you that body? No, you are not that body. Therefore even more important than feeding your body is feeding your actual self, the soul within. Consequently, if you are going to actually survive in the real, most potent form of the term, you absolutely must feed your soul. The conclusion is that just as you prioritize feeding your body, if you have real sanity, you will even more prioritize feeding your soul and you will find a way to squeeze in the practice of Krishna consciousness into your hectic schedule just as you always find a way to eat.

Focus of mind means to always remember Krishna and see everything that you experience in relation to Krishna.

Since Krishna is the ultimate orchestrator of all circumstances, the orchestrator is obviously greater than the orchestrated. Otherwise, how could He orchestrate it?

Turning On the Self Within

At the present moment the entire world population is deluded by an external conception of the self, considering themselves to be their bodies. Nothing could be further from the truth. The real fact is that this body, like a garment, is simply a covering of the actual self that resides within. Therefore if people want genuine lasting happiness, which is never deterred or diminished by any situation no matter how seemingly unfortunate, they simply have to revive their original identity or consciousness, that they are eternal spiritual beings qualitatively one with the Supreme Person, the source of all existence. This requires not only theoretical understanding but also practical realization by engaging oneself fully in the loving devotional service of the Supreme Transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Question: Is Mixed Devotion Not Relishable?

Is it due to devotion to guru and Krishna mixed with material contamination or mundane desires that we are not able to fully surrender and relish the sweetness of Krishna consciousness?

Radha Ramana

-------------------------------------------------------

Answer: Mixed Devotion is Commotion

Yes, devotion must be pure. Otherwise, you can't taste the nectar. It's like trying to enjoy some sweet rice that has been mixed with sand. Sweet rice by itself is very tasty and relishable. But if it is mixed with sand, it becomes unpalatable. Similarly, if devotion is mixed with material desires, it is not devotion. It is business, just like to make some material profit I may flatter someone to make a business deal with them. In this connection the Srimad Bhagavatam clearly states:

ahaituky apratihata
yayatma suprasidati

"Devotional service must be unmotivated and uninterrupted
in order to completely satisfy the self."

Therefore instead of cheating ourselves out of the nectar of Krishna consciousness, we should fully embrace pure devotional service to the Lord as our only activity and our only goal.

When the disciple promises the spiritual master at the time of initiation that he will chant on his japa beads at least 16 rounds of the Hare Krishna mahamantra daily trying to avoid all offenses and that he will also avoid illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling, he must keep his word. By faithfully keeping his word his deliverance back to home, back to Godhead is assured. We live in a crazy world in which we are all trained to be the slaves of our senses. What do we get in reward for a whole lifetime of dedicated service to these rascal senses? We simply get old age, disease, and death. Therefore those who are actually intelligent shun a life of blind servitude to the senses. They instead engage their senses in the service of the master of the senses, Lord Sri Krishna, and thus attain a spiritual body, which is eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss. So what kind of body do you prefer? Do you want an eternal, all blissful, all cognizant body? Or do you desire one temporary, miserable, ignorant body after another such body, lifetime after lifetime for all of eternity? The choice is yours. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."

Today's Thought:

Be True to Your Guru

The spiritual master who initiates us is called our diksha guru or our initiating guru. According to the great Vaisnava acharya, ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, just as we have only one father, we have only one guru, the spiritual master who initiates us. Others who teach us purely what our initiating guru has taught can also be considered spiritual masters. This is called the siksha guru or the instructing spiritual master. The instructing guru assists the spiritual master in delivering the disciple back to home, back to Godhead. If someone teaches differently from what our spiritual master has taught us, he cannot be accepted as an instructing guru.

At the time of our initiation our spiritual master absorbs the karma from our previous sinful activities to facilitate our becoming purely absorbed in Krishna consciousness. In this way he gives us a karmic clean slate so that we can practice Krishna consciousness without being impeded by our previous sinful reactions. Once initiated we must be very careful not to disobey the orders of our spiritual master because if we deviate from the path of bhakti, our spiritual master will suffer reactions. Therefore once we take shelter and initiation from the bona fide spiritual master we must be very careful to always faithfully follow his instructions without any deviation. In this way by remaining true to our guru we will rapidly advance on the pathway back to home, back to Godhead.

Initiating a New Disciple

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:

Question: How to Be Humble Without Losing Self-Esteem?

When I left my childhood home where I was only criticized, never praised, often berated and humiliated I had no self-esteem or confidence. Once I was out on my own, I developed some self-esteem and learned I could stand up for myself. And I guess I ended up over-compensating, becoming defensive and ready to fight (not physically) anyone who I thought was wronging me. This has been my protection for many years now. So I am someone who had to build their confidence and sense of self from the ground up as an adult - something I had to work hard on. So now developing the devotional quality of humility is not easy, especially because it involves trust - trusting that humility will not lead to humiliation. I want to become a good disciple and a good devotee. I want to be able to say (as you taught in one of your lectures on the CD) "please point out my faults and correct me when I am doing something wrong," but I'm so afraid to make myself vulnerable in this way. How can I learn to be humble while also maintaining self-respect?

Forever your disciple,
R.T.

Answer: You Are One of the Most Respected People in the Universe.

Your sincerity to become a pure devotee makes you automatically one of the most respected people in the entire universe. Therefore you have plenty of space to develop humility without any fear of losing your self-esteem.
