How You Can Help

Save the World

At the present moment our course has over 16,000 subscribers. Although this may seem like a lot, this is a mere pittance compared to the full outreach potential of the Internet. Therefore our desire is to expand our subscriber base more and more to reach a much larger portion of the over 3 billion people (more than 40% of the world’s population) who are currently using the Internet. If we can at least expand up to 1 billion subscribers, we are confident that this will have a significant impact on the entire global civilization.

So please send us the names and email addresses of anyone you think might be willing to give this course a try, and we will invite them on your behalf to try it.

Finding True Love At Last

We are all hankering for love, but the problem is that in this material world everyone is self-centered and therefore out to take advantage of us instead of purely loving us. This is why in our relationships we are not satisfied and are so frustrated in so many ways. Our natural psychological need for love is not being satisfied. That is where Krishna consciousness comes to our rescue. As soon as we put Krishna or God back in the center, a tidal wave of pure love flows everywhere inundating everyone in an unlimited ocean of loving happiness. We can then give pure love to everyone and find the greatest satisfaction in our relationships.

Testimonial From Guru Vandana Devi Dasi

Guru Vandana Devi Dasi

An Apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Srila Gurudeva’s Thought For The Day keeps ignorance at bay.

During 2004-05 I was asked to worship various demigods for atonement of previous karmic reactions. The prayers were all on the bodily platform, and I began to question myself why such prayers are not offered to Krishna. I had learnt some prayers of the Alwars (Vaishnava saints of South India) in my school and could relate to that. All the hymns are expressions of unconditional love for God. I became very inquisitive about what exactly we have to pray to God. The more I visited demigods, the more I started worshiping Krishna with questions to Him.

When I was searching for something on Google, Krishna connected me to the Ultimate Self Realization Course. Thereon all my questions I had were answered. The Vedic injunction is that we have to receive the knowledge from the perfect source. I found the author of the course to be an authorized bona fide professor of spiritual knowledge, in the line of disciplic succession directly descending from the Supremely Perfect Person, Krishna. I accepted him as my spiritual master.

From his teachings, I came to know about the goal of my life. Earlier I was a timid, docile, confused person; now I am not. My lifestyle has totally changed and I realize that the course is working on me, transforming me into a disciplined person. Just like a bitter medicine is covered by a sugar coated capsule, Srila Gurudeva’s daily dose of high philosophy/instructions covered with nectarean words, cures us from the jaundice of ignorance.

It Truly Works!

This Ultimate Self Realization Course is recommended for anyone who is in pursuit of self- realization, wants to solve all his problems of life and wants to establish himself in his original position of eternity, knowledge and bliss. This spiritual knowledge is not for a particular person or sect, but for the whole world. By spreading this real spiritual culture throughout the world, the morale of society can be properly maintained and there will happiness and peace everywhere.

Yours truly,
Guru Vandana devi dasi

Question: Is Bhakti Useless Without Initiation?

I would like kindly to ask you to clarify Srila Prabhupada's statements, which you have quoted below:

"Unless one is initiated by a bona fide spiritual master, all his devotional activities are useless. A person who is not properly initiated can descend again into the animal species."

and

"Always thinking of Krishna means chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, but unless one is an initiated devotee he cannot do this."

And then you say: "If even for an ordinary college degree one has to enroll in a university, we can understand how much even more essential it be must be for one to enroll as a disciple if he wants to attain the supreme destination."

I understand and accept that to be able to enter into Krishna's adobe, the spiritual world, we should take shelter of the lotus feet of the bona fide spiritual master, be initiated by him, and serve him with love and devotion. But I do not understand how it is that unless we are initiated all of our devotional activities are useless? What exactly does Prabhupada mean by this?

With my best wishes,
Vadim

Answer: One Cannot Be Krishna Conscious Independently

If one understands the necessity of being initiated by a bona fide spiritual master and is sincerely working towards that goal, his devotional activities are certainly useful, even before his initiation, because they are taking him to initiation, an essential step on the pathway of spiritual awakening. But if he proudly thinks that he does not need a guru and that he can perfect himself in Krishna consciousness without the help of a guru, the benefit he will receive from his devotional activities is so minuscule that it will be practically useless.

Cleaning Up the Mess Within

Within our hearts we are a mess. Our hearts are polluted with lust, anger, greed, madness, illusion, and envy. Because of all this contamination we are not happy. Fools try to become happy by increasing this dirt in the heart. But those who are actually wise know that the real formula for happiness is to get rid of this dirt by regularly chanting the holy names of God under the loving guidance of the bona fide spiritual master.

Question: Why Chanting in the Brahma Muhurta?

Why chanting in Brahma muhurta i.e. morning 4 AM to 6 AM is more auspicious than chanting in some other time? I suppose chanting at any time is all-auspicious if one chants in a very secluded or serene place like New Govardhan, Australia which I have seen pictures in one of your Thoughts for the Day.

Thank you,
Hare Krishna,
Radha Ramana

Answer: Because It Is More Auspicious

It's a fact that chanting the holy names of the Lord at any time in any place is all-auspicious. But because we are still situated within the three modes of material nature we are not able to always experience them like that. This is why we take advantage of the peaceful time of day to help us experience the all-auspicious nature of the holy names. Because of the predominance of the mode of goodness during the early morning hours, there is a much more peaceful atmosphere at that time. We can capitalize on this golden opportunity by rising early, taking our bath, and fully absorbing ourselves in chanting the Hare Krishna mantra on our japa beads. Our Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains the brahma-muhurta hour as follows:

"The time early in the morning, one and a half hours before sunrise, is called brahma-muhurta. During this brahma-muhurta, spiritual activities are recommended. Spiritual activities performed early in the morning have a greater effect than in any other part of the day.”—from purport to SB 3.20.465

In a conversation in Indore on 13 December, 1970 Srila Prabhupada said: "One who cannot rise early in the morning, he is not spiritually serious. That is test. Brahma-muhurta, this hour, one hour before sunrise, is very auspicious moment.”

And in a letter to Radhavalbha Das from Bombay, written on 6 January 1972 Srila Prabhupada said: "Chanting japa should be done early in the morning with full concentration preferably during the brahma-muhurta time.”

While it's also true that chanting in a peaceful place like New Govardhana, Australia helps us to be more absorbed in the holy names, if we will chant Hare Krishna in such a place during the brahma-muhurta hour, we will derive even more benefit from our chanting.

Fighting a War with Maya on Two Fronts

Taking seriously to the path of Krishna consciousness means to declare war against maya or illusion on two fronts. On one hand there is the war within, which is battling it out with our material desires, conquering over them by replacing them all with spiritual desires. Srila Prabhupada describes this internal battle front as follows:

"When we accept any process of self-realization, we are actually declaring war against maya, illusion, and maya is certain to place many difficulties before us."

On the other hand there is the war without, defeating the bogus materialistic propaganda that has completely conquered the human society. Srila Prabhupada describes this external battle front as follows:

"Preaching the cult of devotional service is something like declaring war against materialistic life.

There is a wonderful synergy between these two battle fronts. The more you conquer the maya within you heart, the more you become empowered to successfully defeat the maya without. And the more you can strongly preach against and defeat the maya in the external world, the more you will find that the maya within your heart has been conquered. So, if you will enthusiastically fight this war against maya on both fronts, putting your full faith in Sri Guru and Sri Krishna, your glorious victory in awakening your dormant Krishna consciousness and in successfully spreading the Krishna consciousness movement to the sleeping souls of this world is solidly guaranteed.

Testimonial From Dvijamani Gaura Dasa Brahmacari

Dwijamani Gaura Das Brahmacari

In 2008, I began to read "Thought For the Day," an important component of the Ultimate Self Realization Course. Every day at my job I would read the daily thought and listen to a lecture to keep myself reminded of the goal of my life. The routine of office work was so humdrum and pointless to me, and I needed someone to direct me along the path of achieving spiritual emancipation. I knew my life had a purpose, and I thought I could find it through independent study and exploration. But I felt myself being pulled along the currents of time, forced to accept the stereotyped mode of living and thinking in the material society. If I didn't find a truly enlightened person to lift me up, then I would continue tumbling down the path to oblivion.

After only a week of following His Grace Sankarshan Das Adhikari's course, I found life within myself. I rediscovered prayer, a practiced I'd abandoned in childhood. I felt that here was the answer to my life's dilemma. My dream of becoming a part of the solution to the fear and darkness covering the world's population was manifesting a tangible path before me. The more I read and listened, the more I was convinced that every fiber of this person's being was devoted to broadcasting the Absolute Truth without any tinge of a personally motivated agenda.

Since that time, His Grace has been expertly and lovingly encouraging me step-by-step down this glorious road of realizing my true identity, and has kindly accepted me as his disciple. I am overwhelmed with gratitude and feel that my life is simply meant for bringing others to the beautiful, peaceful state of consciousness that he has made available with this online course.

Question: Is Srila Prabhupada the Only Spiritual Master?

All glories to you and Srila Prabhupada. I am new to Krishna Consciousness and your course. I only started in October 2014. I am confused about when and how one should accept a spiritual master. There are other websites saying that we shouldn't accept a spiritual master except for Srila Prabhupada because even though he has passed, he still lives on in his books. They say Srila Prabhupada never said for anyone else to be spiritual masters and only gave permission to eleven others to initiate on his behalf after he passed. Can you please explain the proper way of having a spiritual master?

Thank you for your time.

Hare Krishna.
James

Answer: Prabhupada Ordered His Disciples to Become Gurus

Once upon a time there was a fox who spied some really wonderful looking grapes high on a grape vine. Eager to sample those grapes he jumped as high as he could to try to reach them but fell short of the mark. He tried again and again pushing himself to jump higher and higher, but no matter how high he jumped he was still not quite able to reach the grapes. Finally defeated in his attempt to taste the grapes he declared that the grapes are sour and walked away.

Recently on this planet there was present the most influential and enlightened spiritual master in world history, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Through his books, his lectures, his letters, his conversations, and his example he revealed the highest truth of Krishna consciousness, which will take anyone who understands and implements it to the highest state of spiritual perfection. Not only did he act as a guru for delivering the fallen souls of this age, he also trained his disciples how they could become gurus to continue with the work of delivering the fallen souls of this age after his disappearance. He specifically instructed that after his departure from this world those of his disciples who are strictly following him should continue the disciplic succession by initiating their own disciples.

Some neophyte devotees who were not qualified to become gurus due to their not strictly following Srila Prabhupada's teachings became envious of those devotees who were empowered to become gurus. So they concocted a false philosophy to declare that nobody could be a guru except for Srila Prabhupada. "If I can't taste the grapes, the grapes are sour. If I can't be a guru, nobody can be a guru." Even though the number of these disobedient foxes is very small compared to the number of devotees who are obediently following Srila Prabhupada, through putting up many web pages on the Internet they are giving the false impression that there is some substantiality to their concocted views. If you tell a lie long enough, foolish people will start believing it. But those who are wise take the time and trouble to find out what is actually true before they draw any conclusions.

The eleven you mentioned were instructed by Srila Prabhupada to initiate devotees as his disciples between July and October of 1977 when Srila Prabhupada was too ill to be involved with the initiations of new disciples. On 18 October 1977 just days before his departure Srila Prabhupada stated that he would no longer accept disciples, and he authorized his disciples to begin accepting their own disciples.

The proper way to have a spiritual master is to find someone who is a bona fide disciple of Srila Prabhupada, is loyal to the ISKCON institution that Srila Prabhupada created, and who has been blessed by ISKCON's Governing Body Commission (GBC) to initiate disciples. You will know that he is bona fide by seeing that he is perfectly living and speaking the Absolute Truth which is taught by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita. You should then take shelter of that spiritual master, become his initiated disciple, and fully dedicate your life to following his instructions accepting them as your very life and soul. In this way you will become fully absorbed in pure devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna and fully qualified to enter into the spiritual world when you depart from your present material body.

Embrace Unlimited Krishna Consciousness Bliss

Cast off all of your misery right now and embrace the unlimited bliss of Krishna consciousness. Why should you unnecessarily punish yourself for even a single moment longer? You are an eternal spiritual being qualitatively one with God. Therefore there is no need whatsoever for you to continue punishing yourself by misidentifying yourself with the rotting, aging bag of flesh, bones, stool, urine, and blood known as your material body. Throw away all of your unnecessary psychological baggage and celebrate your simply wonderful eternal, all-blissful identity as an intimate personal servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: Is There Such a Thing as Spiritual Sense Gratification?

My Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble pranam.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Your lecture series on the Nectar of Devotion at the New Vedic Cultural Center in Pune, India on 17, 18, and 19 April was very enchanting. The Hare Krishna kirtan you led on the 18th evening after the lectures was sublime. I felt like I was floating in the ocean of devotion. On the 19th night a tinge of sadness was felt at the thought of not being able to hear you in person from 20th onwards. But the thought that I can always meet you daily through your e_ course was encouraging.

My question is: Just like material sense gratification exists, does spiritual sense gratification also exist? If so, how to recognize spiritual sense gratification and pure love of Krishna?

Your humble servant,
Makarand

Answer: Engaging the Senses in Krishna's Service

Material sense gratification means to gratify the material senses by giving them whatever they want, such as unrestricted pleasures of the tongue and genitals. Such gratification is the doorway to hell. The poor material sense gratifier is miserable in this lifetime and is destined to become an animal in his next birth. On the other hand, spiritual sense gratification is something altogether different. Spiritual sense gratification means to engage your senses in the service of the master of the senses, Hrisikesa, Lord Sri Krishna. When you satisfy Krishna in this way your senses automatically become satisfied and peaceful, free from all agitation. Therefore those who are intelligent and properly educated shun material sense gratification and intensely absorb themselves eternally in spiritual sense gratification for the pleasure of their beloved Lord Sri Krishna.

It is said, "All that glitters is not gold." In regards to this material existence this is super excellent advice. Superficially this material existence appears to be very wonderful. But by careful, thoughtful analysis we can see that it is nothing more than a very attractive trap, which robs us of the actual happiness that we are meant to enjoy in the constant association of Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His eternal, divine pastimes.

Testimonial From Hare Krishna Das

I am Hare Krishna Das. His Divine Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari initiated me and gave me a new life on October 2009. Twenty years back, my mother gave me a copy of Bhagavad Gita As It Is. I was then 13 years old. I slowly started chanting and regularly reading Bhagavad Gita As It Is. Meantime, I got admission in a medical college and graduated as a medical doctor. But even after regularly chanting and reading books, I felt a vacuum. Something was missing. I understood from Srila Prabhupada's books that I needed a living person to properly guide me in self-realization. I have a very shy personality, so I never ventured out to search for an ISKCON temple and go there. But my intense desire to have a guide or mentor was increasing each day. So, I start praying to Krishna for proper guidance. On 2007, when I casually browsing Google, I typed "Krishna", then I noticed the Ultimate Self Realization Course. So I enrolled it. I consider that to be causeless mercy of Krishna. One day I asked a question, Sankarshan Prabhu answered me. I was thrilled. I had never seen such a person who has intense love for Krishna. That quality attracted me. He is speaking exactly from Srila Prabhupada's books. He is very merciful also. He gives us exact guidance. When I first heard one of his recorded lecture, something in my heart told me, "This is your spiritual master." Then in due course, I met him. Under his guidance, I associate with ISKCON devotees. The more I follow his instructions, the more I feel connected with Krishna. I understand that the love between a spiritual master and disciple is the sweetest relationship one can have. He mercifully initiated me (even though, I have no good qualification). His mercy is my only qualification. I recommend everyone to give the Ultimate Self Realization course a serious try. I am 100% sure, this will bring unlimited happiness to everyone.

Just as an absolute monarch has full power over his kingdom, but yet out of love for his subjects gives them the freedom to live happily according to their desires, in the same way Krishna has complete control over everything, but at the same time because He is our loving father, He gives us the independence to do what makes us happy.

The Latest and Greatest News

Do you want to be tuned into the latest and greatest news, the most significant things that are happening in the world? If so, you need to think beyond our insignificant "ant hill" earth planet and the puny universe of the four-headed Brahma that we are now inhabiting. You need to broaden your world conception to the entirety of existence in which the astoundingly amazing pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna are going on at every minute.

In this material world everyone is running after the latest mundane news. There are thousands of news publications printing millions of copies for daily mass distribution. There are also thousands of Internet news outlets dishing out the latest updates of what's happening. Thus people all over the world are being bombarded with an avalanche of non-stop mundane new for their entire lives, and are becoming attached and addicted to being injected with these regular doses of the so-called latest and greatest news.

But what is the real latest and greatest news?

Here's what Srila Prabhupada says about it:

"Mundane news is static whereas transcendental news is dynamic, inasmuch as the spirit is dynamic and matter is static. Those who have developed a taste for understanding the transcendental subject matter are never tired of hearing such narrations. One is quickly satiated by mundane activities, but no one is satiated by transcendental or devotional activities. Uttama-sloka indicates that literature which is not meant for nescience. Mundane literature is in the mode of darkness or ignorance, whereas transcendental literature is quite different. Transcendental literature is above the mode of darkness, and its light becomes more luminous with progressive reading and realization of the transcendental subject matter." (from purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 1.1.19)

In this connection Lord Brahma, who is fully aware of every shred of news in this entire universe at every moment, has very sagaciously written:

ananda-cinmaya-rasatmataya manahsu
yah praninam pratiphalan smaratam upetya
lilayitena bhuvanani jayaty ajasram-
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami

"I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, whose glory ever triumphantly dominates the mundane world by the activity of His own pastimes, being reflected in the mind of recollecting souls as the transcendental entity of ever-blissful cognitive rasa." --Brahma Samhita 5.42

Brahmaji is enlightening us that the Krishna news upstages or triumphantly dominates over all other types of news. And everything about Krishna is ever new at every moment. The topics of Krishna never become stale or worn out. So the conclusion is that the next time you are interested to tune into the latest and greatest news ignore the mundane news outlets. Instead try chanting Hare Krishna or reading the Bhagavad-gita or the Srimad Bhagavatam. If you do so, you'll really know what is happening in the world, better than anyone else. You will be blissfully tuned into reality while everyone else is miserably drowning in ignorance.

Testimonial From K.C. Vijayakumar

I am working as the principal of a higher secondary school. I started receiving the daily lessons of the Ultimate Self Realization Course in 2009. At first I was not very serious, and I failed to read the lessons with the interest and seriousness I am having today. The daily thoughts and the answers are very much helpful to a devotee. The more I understand about Krishna Consciousness the more devoted and interested l become.

Hindu Religion has got many Acharyas and like many others I was also confused as to who l should follow and whose interpretations of the scriptures l should read. Sankarshan Das Adhikari's words clear the doubts by giving authoritative, authentic and quite convincing answers. Question: Why is My Life a Mess?

Why do I still find my life to be a mess, even though I am practicing devotional service?

Your servant,

A.D.

Answer: You are Lacking a Guru

You life is still a mess because you have not yet followed Krishna's order to accept a spiritual master. If you want to attain the transcendental platform, three things are required. You must take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master. You must solidify that shelter by the accepting the vow of initiation. And, you must be fully obedient to your spiritual master' instructions accepting them as your very life and soul. Then and only then will you be able to kick away all anxieties out of your heart and fully straighten out the mess that your life is currently in.

Dream, Believe, Work Hard, and Succeed

The Prime Minister of Finland, Alex Stubb, advises, "Dream, believe, work hard, and succeed." These points of advise can be utilized very nicely by our Krishna consciousness movement. We dream of a world in which everyone is Krishna conscious. Because it is stated in the Caitanya-caritamrita that the entire world will inundated by a tidal wave of Krishna bhakti, we believe and know with absolute certainty that it will happen. We then ecstatically work hard to bring our dream to reality as soon as possible by telling the whole world about Krishna. In this way if we stick tightly to our goal, we will indeed someday become successful. As Srila Prabhupada told Guru Das in London in 1973 that the history books will note how the Krishna consciousness movement saved the world from its darkest hour of despair.

I subscribed the course some years ago because my friend recommended it to me, and because I had just realized that if I want to do something permanently useful for the human society, I must follow someone who knows what he's doing. His Grace is a person like that. His e-course is very inspirational for anyone who is concerned about the welfare of others. It is especially useful for a spiritual seeker or any theist who is interested in finding a non-sectarian relationship with the Supreme God.

There is a lot of course material: daily emails, questions that help me to study the course book, mp3 lectures, YouTube videos, live online lectures, transcribed lectures, opportunity to ask questions and get answers...all given for me for free. What I have learned by joining the course is how to practice the sublime spiritual lifestyle, Krishna consciousness, even in a material environment. My life has become more balanced and happy because of the deeper understanding of matter and spirit. Thank You!

Question: How to Not Be Deterred by Negativity and Bad News?

How does one stay focused while they face drama, negativity, bad news, etc. in their life? How can I block these things in my mind so it will not deter me from my spiritual Journey?

Thank you

Your Humble Servant
Ericka Williams

Answer: Find Krishna's Kindness Within Them

The trick is: Don’t try to block out the negativity and bad news. You have look deep within them to find the loving kindness of Krishna acting through them in various ways to purify us and bring us back to His transcendental kingdom as soon as possible. So instead of blocking them you should embrace them within your heart seeing them positively as the sweet loving mercy of Krishna. In this way all such so-called negative things will be stepping stones instead of a stumbling blocks on your pathway back to home, back to Godhead.

My Life Was a Meaningless Mess

Before I was blessed with this amazing process of Krishna consciousness for awakening my original, eternal divine consciousness I was a bewildered, miserable lost soul. Although I had a sentiment of doing the highest good for the suffering humanity and had for this purpose adopted the lifestyle of a singer/songwriter for trying to promote higher consciousness to the world, I had not a clue of what is the actual higher consciousness. But in 1971 by the grace of Lord Sri Krishna I was able to get the shelter of the most enlightened and influential spiritual master in history, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Ever since then I have been living in paradise assisting my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, in transforming this entire world into a paradise. If you have not yet joined in this mission embracing it as your very life and soul, you should do so today. Why unnecessarily suffer for even one second longer?

Testimonial From Abhishek Kalva

I got myself introduced to this e-course in the year 2006. Since then, I have been following the teachings of Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari Prabhu continuously. Though I knew very little about ISKCON earlier to joining this e-course, it was only after I got introduced to this e-course that I have truly understood the meaning and purpose of this society and realized the efforts of its Founder Acharya Swami Srila Prabhupada.

I was born in a family which is too materialistic and always spending time in sense gratification. Right from the beginning days of my teen age, I was having an inclination towards spiritual life and wanted to find out the answers concerning the soul, what is its relation with God and what are we and where do we belong. Sometimes I heard people around me saying that this human form of life is very precious and also that its only purpose is to gratify our senses more and more. I was never really satisfied with what was happening around me and was in search of someone who would guide me properly. All this was happening during my college days and, one fine day when I was browsing through internet about spiritual topics I came across the “Ultimate Self Realization Course." This moment changed my life from then on. Though in the beginning I was not regularly reading all the daily messages, but over the time when I was receiving messages for which I was always seeking the answers, I was happy, satisfied and content that I could find a genuine Guru who is dedicating his life to enlighten poor souls like me worldwide.

I would recommend this e-course for all those souls who are genuinely trying to understand the purpose of life. This is an ideal platform from where everyone of us can kick-start our journey for going Back to Godhead.

Question: Can I Go Back to Godhead Without Being Initiated?

Some of my devotee friends have told me that one does not have to be an initiated disciple of bona fide spiritual master in order to attain the spiritual world at the time of death. Is this true?

A.D.

Answer: Initiation is Required. Don't Make a Fool's Paradise.

According to great spiritual authorities initiation is absolutely imperative for anyone who wants to enter into the spiritual world at the time of death. Srila Prabhupada was asked about the necessity of initiation during a morning walk conversation on 22 May 1975 in Melbourne, Australia. Here's how the conversation went:

Madhudvisa: The question was, Prabhupada, is it possible for a person to return to the spiritual world without taking initiation from a bona fide spiritual master?

Prabhupada: No, that is not possible. Therefore Rupa Gosvami said, adau gurv-asrayam. First business is to accept spiritual master.

Srila Prabhupada has also written about this in his books. In his purport to Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya Lila 15:108 he quotes this verse:

"Unless one is initiated by a bona fide spiritual master, all his devotional activities are useless. A person who is not properly initiated can descend again into the animal species."

And in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 8.1.15 Srila Prabhupada writes:

"Always thinking of Krishna means chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, but unless one is an initiated devotee he cannot do this."

So although it may be a very comfortable and pleasing idea that one can go back to Godhead without having to fully surrender to a bona fide spiritual master, it is absolutely untrue. This is simply another version of fool's paradise. If even for an ordinary college degree one has to enroll in a university, we can understand how much even more essential it be must be for one to enroll as a disciple if he wants to attain the supreme destination.

Taste the Bliss of Telling Others About Krishna

There is truly nothing more ecstatic that telling others about Krishna. Therefore we talk about Krishna both to those who already know that Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and to those who do not yet know. Even amongst the general public, if we intelligently and attractively present Krishna with the best descriptive language, everyone will become attracted to Krishna even the atheists. Indeed, talking about Krishna can pacify the entire world bringing in new era of peace and prosperity for all.

Shalini Gupta

Respected Sir,

Hari Om.

It is my utmost privilege to be reading the purport of the profound knowledge( that Lord Shri Krishna imparted to humanity five thousand years ago) daily with your thoughts and analysis .

As we read this every day we are constantly in tune with the Divinity in each one of us and it surely connects us with our goodness in terms of our duties, service and sacrifice to our fellow beings and this lovely universe.

We just have to develop this awareness of the GREAT AWARENESS which is all around us.

This daily e-course helps me to try to be PARIPURNA, a human being conscious of the Godhead which is present in each one of us. Because we have moved away, being lured by the glamour of the world, we are unhappy. Reading these thoughts and texts of our scriptures reminds us each day to tune our heart and soul with the Godhead who is within us and is urging us to return to His eternal abode in the spiritual sky.

Thanking you profoundly,

Question: Troubled by Thought for the Day

This is Not God

I found the 19 April 2015 edition of Thought for the Day troubling. The image of Krishna juxtaposed with the image of Yahweh from the Hebrew Bible, with captions reading "This is God" and "This is not God". I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, but this just strikes me as highly sectarian. I am always disturbed when any religion feels a need to criticize the faiths of others, like a Southern hell-fire preacher denouncing other faiths. This is something that is commonly regarded as a symptom of one's own wavering faith, to examine other's flaws, short-comings, differences in faith traditions, to condemn other traditions as a matter of practice. This sectarianism was something I thought was absent from the Hare Krishna movement and one of the aspects which I find so attractive about the tradition. It states in Vatican II that regardless of faith tradition, if a disciple follows sincerely their tradition they can come to know God and live according to God. It has been my impression so far that the Hare Krishna movement has an equally and even more enlightened position on the issue of religious exclusivism as Catholic Church.

Any guidance you can offer me on understanding today's email would be greatly appreciated.

Charlie Atkins

Answer: We Accept the Biblical God, But Not this Painting of God

Thank you very much for your sincere inquiry. We appreciate your desire for clarification. Others may also have been confused. By your openly and honestly stating your confusion this gives us the opportunity to clarify this matter for all of our readers.

The God of the Bible and the God of the Bhagavad-gita are the same God. So we certainly are not saying that the God of the Bible is not God. What we are saying is that the painting of God of an old man does not accurately represent God because God is not an old man. God has absolute control over everything including time itself. Therefore He is not subject to debilitating aging influence of time that we are all subjected to and He always remains as an ever-fresh youth. We never say that the Biblical God is not God. We simply say that the man who made this painting of God as old man did not have a proper understanding of the transcendental nature of God beyond the influence of time.

Why I Cancelled My Subscription to This Course

I cancelled my subscription to this course because it interrupts maya.

Diogo S.

Answer: Ignorance is Bliss. But Only for the Ignorant

Someone who is attached to remaining in maya or illusion will naturally not like an interruption to their illusion. In this connection it is sometimes said, "Ignorance is bliss." But this is true only for those who are ignorant. It does not apply to learned and thoughtful men who desire to attain unlimited happiness by full realization of the Absolute Truth. For one who is in maya or illusion there is a false sense of happiness. But it is not real happiness. It is like possessing counterfeit note for $100. It appears to have value, but actually has no value whatsoever.

We Need to Get Back to a God-Centered Society

We need to get back to a God-centered society instead of the current me-centered society, which has proved itself to be an utter failure in regards to making a happy, peaceful atmosphere for the citizens on this planet. I am not talking about a sectarian God monster who is simply an expansion of our own me-centeredness. I am speaking of an enlightened God-centeredness in which one sees a universe that does not accidentally pop out of nothing (a scientifically impossible feat). I am pointing to a God-centeredness in which we understand that there is a supreme infinitely loving and kind person who is bestowing unlimited benedictions upon each of us at every minute. By harmonizing ourselves with that Supreme Person who has unlimited names, qualities, and pastimes we enter into a enlightened state of eternal bliss and knowledge. This is what the world needs now more than ever, not more me-centeredness or false egoistic so-called God-centeredness. We need the real thing, not a fake imitation. We need to realize the Supreme Person as He is, and our eternal identities as His servants.

I have been a student of this wonderful e-course by Gurudeva, His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari since 2006. And I can assure you it is the most significant and important day of my entire life next to the first time I read Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad Gita As it is. The e-course has helped me every single day to keep my mind and thoughts clear of all the material anxieties and confusions that constantly pull you down and away from your original blissful nature.

I had so many doubts and questions before I joined this course and it affected the way I lived and dealt with my family, friends, colleagues and with many of life's circumstances. I always felt like I was in this world but not of it. But it led me to becoming lazy in fulfilling my duties as I did not find a purpose in doing anything materially. But since I come from a very pious south Indian family there was never lack of religiousness. God was a very important part of our daily life. But yet there was something I was still missing. And I finally found the missing piece of the puzzle when I read Bhagavad Gita by Srila Prabhupada. And just in a few weeks I found this e-course online and I registered immediately. I deem finding this course and having an association with Srila Gurudeva as Krishna's special mercy and Srila Prabhupada's blessing. This course has positively changed me simply because it has shown me who I really am and what is the actual purpose of life.

Ever since Gurudeva has personally answered so many of my questions and guided and helped me along this pathway. I am eternally grateful to him for having started this e-course and for so meticulously inspiring thousands of his students the world over in this ultimate science of Krishna consciousness. I seek his blessings and mercy in being able to serve him by following his instructions and also inspiring others to follow this path. I am aspiring to follow the regulations of the Krishna conscious life and the daily thoughts from this e-course are like communicating with Gurudeva everyday in person.

I would kindly request you to try this e-course. There is no limit to how much you will gain and how your life would be completely changed.

Sincerely
Priya Harinath

Question: Can We Wear Music T-Shirts?

Can a devotee wear T-shirts of musicians like Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, The Doors, etc.?

Of course not in the temple room, but what about out in public?

Khush

Answer: We Wear Krishna Conscious T-Shirts

The devotee’s mission is to awaken the Krishna consciousness within the hearts of all. Therefore if he wears a T-shirt with a picture on it, he will wear a T-shirt with a beautiful picture of Krishna or some other type of Krishna conscious T-shirt. Why advertise a mundane musician whose music is not connecting people with Krishna when you can instead advertise Krishna and thus bestow the highest benediction upon anyone who sees your T-shirt? This is real intelligence.

How to Conquer the World

The formula for conquering the world is very simple. Everyone in this entire material world is starved for love, pure love uncontaminated by lust, anger, greed, madness, illusion or envy. Without this pure love or minus this pure love, everyone is dissatisfied no matter what position of so-called enjoyment they achieve in this world up to even up to the point of becoming Lord Brahma, the controlling demigod of this entire universe. In the material world such pure love is not available because everyone is tinged with the impure desire to be the center of enjoyment instead of rightfully engaging in the service of the Supreme Enjoyer, Lord Sri Krishna. The solution for all this madness and misery is very simple. Give your love to Krishna, and share love of Krishna with everyone that you meet. This is real love. This is real bliss. This is the purpose for which we exist. All we are saying is give Krishna consciousness a try. Try it. You'll love it. The entire world will be conquered.

Question: Can I Chant Hare Krishna During Office Hours?

Dear Sir,

I am working in a government office. Can I chant Krishna's holy names during office hours? If I do this, is it correct or not?

Jayakumar Gopal

Answer: Krishna Says to Chant 24 Hours Daily

Krishna says in the Bhagavad-gita that we should be chanting His names 24 hours a day. So it is appropriate to chant His names in all times and places wherever you can.

When I was working for MCI corporation in the USA we would get a 15 minute break during a four hour shift. During that time I would chant Hare Krishna japa mala in the hallway. When one day I wore Vaisnava tilaka to work my boss noted that wearing tilaka inspired me to do a better job, and he consequently ordered me to always wear tilaka to work.

Question: Your View on Advaita Philosophy?

What are your views on advaita Vedanta philosophy?

Shubham Ghanghas

Answer: The Vedic Conclusion, Not My View

It is not a matter of my views. It is a matter of what is the conclusion of the authoritative Vedic scriptures.

Advaita means non-dual. So advaita philosophy is to see that everything is absolutely one. Advaita philosophy by itself in incomplete, because within the absolute oneness of everything, duality or variety also simultaneously exists. For example, there is God and there is also the creation or energy of God. This is duality. It is not that everything and everyone is God as the followers of Advaita philosophy propound. The correct understanding of the Absolute Truth is that it is simultaneously advaita (non-dual) and dvaita (dual). This is the sublime philosophy taught by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

Question: Is this Love or Illusion?

Since a long time back I have been trying to understand my feelings. I feel for one person very strongly so much that I sometimes see that person around me. And thinking about that person brings tears to my eyes. Is this love or illusion? I think it is illusion as I believe the emotions are towards a material body. However, I need your advice.

Thanking you.

S.B.

Answer: Transform Illusion into Pure Love

You have intelligently and properly understood that your feelings are material. They are simply a perverted reflection of your original natural intense feelings of love for Lord Krishna. The cure is that you should intensely, more and more every day, absorb your mind in hearing about, remembering, glorifying and serving that supreme all-attractive person Krishna. When you master the art of loving Krishna, your love for Him and all living beings will become perfect. Until then, your sense of love will be polluted by a false sense of bodily identity.

How Krishna Consciousness Became Revived in India

When Srila Prabhupada was preaching Krishna consciousness in India in the 40's, 50's, and 60's, no one was interested to take it seriously. Not even one person stepped forward to give his life to assist Srila Prabhupada in his mission. Because Srila Prabhupada had been ordered by his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, to spread Krishna consciousness to the English speaking world and because he had been given a free passage on a ship that was coming to New York, Srila Prabhupada took the message of Krishna to America in 1965. It was there in the USA that Srila Prabhupada was given by Lord Krishna within several years so many thousands of young men and women sacrificing their entire lives to serve his mission. It was only after Srila Prabhupada brought some of these western disciples to India that the people of India began to take the Krishna consciousness movement seriously. At that time in India everyone was giving up their own culture and becoming inclined towards western culture. When the Indians saw that the westerners were totally embracing their Indian Krishna culture this deeply touched their hearts, and gradually over many years, many thousands of Indians have also become inspired to give their entire lives in the service the Hare Krishna movement.

I am on a beautiful journey in my life following the sign posts of my spiritual master, His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari, who always points out according to time, place and circumstances following Guru, saintly teachers and scriptures.

And often when I fall, I pick myself up again and carry on with the aid of His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari following his teachings. Along the road I have picked up many treasures of his books like "Truth Works", "Uttama Bhakti", and "Conquer your Mind and Senses." They are always by my side to comfort and guide me. Among my other treasures which I have gathered are also Bhagavad-gita As It is and Srimad Bhagavatam by ISKCON Founder-Acarya, Srila Prabhupada, which I am sure I share with others.

I am sure my fellow travelers and any other travelers along the same path will benefit as I have by this guidance.

Yours sincerely,

Question: Must the Spiritual Master Be a Live Person?

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his sincere followers

I have a strong desire to find a spiritual master and I know soon I will find one. In a recent "Thought for the Day" you mentioned these points:

1. Take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master
2. Accept initiation from the bona fide spiritual master
3. Obey the instructions of the bona fide spiritual master.

I have been told by many devotees that I need only to take Krishna or Srila Prabhupada as spiritual masters that I only need to study Srila Prabhupada books and writings. Is this is true that the spiritual master does not have to be a living person?

N.R.

Answer: Follow Prabhupada's Order: Become Disciple of His Disciple

Do you want to follow Srila Prabhupada or some foolish, miseducated, neophytes who are telling you to not follow Srila Prabhupada's teachings?

Srila Prabhupada said not to make a guru in the air, that we should make guru concrete. Srila Prabhupada instructed us that after his departure the new devotees would become initiated as the disciples of his disciples. Therefore anyone who wants to truly follow Srila Prabhupada must become the disciple of one of his disciples, instead of following some concocted idea that he can be Srila Prabhupada's direct disciple. In 1977 just days before his departure Srila Prabhupada said that he would not be accepting any more disciples. Therefore since then it is not possible for anyone to become his direct disciple, the only available option is to become a disciple of one of his disciples. This is the traditional system known as the guru parampara system that has been going on since time immemorial. In this regard Srila Prabhupada states in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Second Canto, Chapter Nine, Text 43:

"One who is now the disciple is the next spiritual master."

I trust that Srila Prabhupada's desire for you is now crystal clear. If not, you can write me for further clarification.

Always See Things As They Are

Your happiness or distress in life has nothing to do with your external circumstances. It depends entirely on your vision of reality. If your vision is clear, if you see things as they are, you will taste unlimited happiness. And if it is distorted by your only seeing things on the material plane, you will be constantly tossed on the waves of distress and so-called happiness. If you can understand and implement the proper vision of seeing everything in relationship with Krishna, you will be liberated from the realm of anxiety and will happily engage your eternal existence in the service of Lord Sri Krishna.

Teaching the Science of Krishna in Vrindavana --11 April 2015

Testimonial from Mahabhagavat Das

Even though I was born in a supposedly pious family in South India, I received practically no training in spiritual life. Most of my family members were engaged busily in earning money and pursuing sense gratification. In fact, so much so, that in my teenage years, I was practically convinced that there was no God, or that if there was a God, it was some sort of impersonal entity and I couldn't care less. I just wanted as much power, as much money, and as much material enjoyment as I could amass, with a curiosity about spiritual life that fortunately never left me.

Receiving Srila Prabhupada's Bhagavad Gita As It Is in my early twenties, and reading to find faults so I could discard it, I felt that this was a genuine philosophy, but I couldn't make sense of how to apply Krishna's lofty words and Srila Prabhupada's wonderful explanations to my life. So it all still remained theoretical.

A few years later, the Ultimate Self Realization Course changed all that. I subscribed in 2004, and I haven't missed a single day of reading the daily and weekly emails since.

In the beginning, I had my doubts, more than my fair share of them. And I began to express them in challenging emails to the author of the daily emails, His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari. While I remained outwardly civil in my communication, my questions were quite strange, to say the least. My questions expressed my intense confusion from years of reading confusing writings by other confused authors, such as Swami Vivekananda, Jiddu Krishnamurti and A Parthasarathy, and many, many others - practically I had been reading a book a day from the age of 12. My questions also expressed my doubts about the source, validity, authenticity, and authority of this philosophy and way of life.

But His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari, now my very dear spiritual father, affectionately addressed as Srila Gurudeva, patiently answered each and every one of my emails with loving kindness. Sometimes he was starkly terse, and stern, sometimes very strict, sounding practically radical to my material mind, but even that was his loving kindness. More than 600 of those challenging emails later, my doubts thoroughly defeated, I knew I had met my eternal spiritual master, who had come to this world to take me out of this endless cycle of birth and death. So, seven years later, I surrendered as his duly initiated disciple. Of course, I have a long, long way to go before being truly surrendered, or even as surrendered as he himself was to Srila Prabhupada on day one when he met him. But initiation is the beginning, and now I am sure my journey to spiritual perfection has begun, thanks to my spiritual master's mercy.

You know, a spiritual master vows to stay in the material world until all his disciples are delivered to pure Krishna consciousness. Who even takes such a heavy responsibility upon themselves!? I mean, people find it hard to stick to each other for one lifetime when times get difficult. Who knows the depth of karmic reactions I have accumulated in my millions of lifetimes in material existence? But my spiritual master knows that if I follow his instructions as he is following Srila Prabhupada's instructions, then it will all be fine. He is prepared to stay in material existence if Srila Prabhupada wants him to. Who can avoid surrendering to such a person?

Every single day, I read these daily thoughts of my spiritual master, and I marvel at his intensely inspiring Krishna consciousness. I express gratitude to him for doing this, and to Sri Krishna, for sending me his way. I strive to convince others to give this Ultimate Self Realization Course a try. It has given me a whole new outlook in life. Thanks to him, no matter what happens externally, I remain calm and peaceful inside, I am satisfied and content inside, even though I may compete fiercely outside. I feel deeply connected to Krishna, and seek to continue my journey to that eternally blissful and joyful nature as part-and-parcel of Krishna, the Supreme Absolute Truth. I hang on to the words of my spiritual master, these are the boat for me, once-lost, never forgotten, spirit soul.

I pray to read the words written by my spiritual master every single day for every day of my life, for this lifetime and all of eternity.

Please, I beg you, kindly try it out for yourself. You cannot imagine just how much you have to regain. What do you have to lose anyway?

Sincerely,
Mahabhagavat Das

Question: How to Choose a Spiritual Master?

Hare Krishna, Gurudeva.

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have asked so many questions regarding this thing to you and my seniors, but I am still little bit confused. I am really sorry for giving inconvenience to you and I am very thankful to you as you are answering my foolish questions. I am very fortunate that I have come in contact with pure devotees like you and Srila Prabhupada.

You wrote me previously that I should take shelter of a spiritual master. But I have heard from my seniors that if you are not inspired by any senior devotee and if the instruction given by him does not touch your heart deeply then you will not be able to surrender yourself completely to spiritual master. He also told me that if you are not inspired by any devotee then you should pray to Krishna for this. You told me that I should take shelter of a bona fide guru, but if I have no deep feeling for any senior devotee then whom should I surrender completely?

Trying to be your humble servant,

S.V.

Answer: Don't Go Down With the Sinking Ship

It is amazing that your heart is more deeply touched by these "seniors" than by those spiritual masters who are qualified to deliver you from the cycle of birth and earth. You are taking the guidance of less advanced devotees as more significant than the guidance of those who are more advanced. This is your less intelligence.

Regarding not being able to choose a spiritual master from whom to take shelter, kindly consider the following example:

If you are on a sinking ship and there are many lifeboats available for you to take shelter of and you are so indecisive regarding which lifeboat to take shelter of that you don't take shelter of any of them, you will go down with the ship and be drowned. Your indecision will be fatal. Therefore as soon as possible you should take whichever lifeboat is readily available.

This material world is a sinking ship, and the bona fide spiritual masters are the lifeboats. If you remain indecisive and never take shelter of any spiritual master, you will take birth again in this miserable material world instead of going back to Godhead. As in the above example, your indecision will be fatal. Therefore, feeling or no feeling, you should accept any bona fide spiritual master who is readily available without be so concerned about which one, and thus become saved from the vicious cycle of birth and death.

The feelings of being deeply touched by the spiritual master's instructions are already there buried deeply within you heart. Simply by engaging yourself in the regulative activities of Krishna consciousness under the direction of the bona fide spiritual master those natural deep feelings will be aroused in due course of time.

So don't waste time. Do the needful now to save yourself from the cycle of birth and death. Take shelter of a bona fide spiritual and get off of the sinking ship.

You Are All Set

You are all set to escape the cycle of birth and death and attain the topmost perfection of spiritual existence, regaining your original transcendental form and identity in the transcendental pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, going on eternally in His stupendously amazing abode known as Goloka Vrindavana, if you will simply do these three things:

1. Take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master
2. Accept initiation from the bona fide spiritual master
3. Obey the instructions of the bona fide spiritual master

It is really just as simple as that. If you have full faith in this process, and you sincerely follow it in spite of whatever frailties you may have, your achieving the ultimate success is guaranteed. So why not go for it? You would be a fool not to.

Hare Krishna.

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada and his sincere followers.

I am working in Mumbai and I have been enrolled since last 8 years.

There cannot be a better way to begin the day than by reading "The Thought of the Day" by His Grace Sankarshan Das Adhikari.

I have personally benefitted with this course in terms of spiritual nourishment on a daily basis to the uncontrolled mind and senses which was creating havoc in my life.

His Grace Sankarshan Das Adhikari is a very personal and genuine Spiritual Master, whose compassionate nature overlooks our shortcomings and brings out our true nature, that is how to love and serve God.

His "Thought for the Day" is surcharged with spiritual message and would recommend this course for all who are genuine seekers of Ultimate Truth, peace and happiness.

Question: Should We Be Afraid of Our Spiritual Master?

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances,
All glories to Srila Prabhupada, all glories to You and Guru Mata

I want to understand the relationships between Guru and disciple. Should we be afraid Guru or not? I saw in myself that I bow down, show respect and etc., from fear, but not from love. How to show respect, offer obeisances and service, not from fear to make offenses and get bad reactions, but from love. Or should we feel both, love and fear?

Thank You for yours causeless mercy, to be yours disciple

Yours insignificant servant,

Vyasadeva das
Kaunas

Answer: We Should Reciprocate His Pure Love For Us

The disciple should not be afraid of his spiritual master. Rather he should understand how much the spiritual master loves him and reciprocate with the love of the spiritual master. In a letter to one of his disciples, Srila Prabhupada describes the love of the spiritual master as follows:

"You have asked if it is true that the spiritual master remains in the material universe until all of His disciples are transferred to the spiritual sky. The answer is, "yes." This is the rule. Therefore, every student should be very much careful not to commit any offense which will be detrimental to this promotion to the spiritual kingdom, and thereby the spiritual master has to incarnate again to deliver him. "

Can you imagine a person who is willing to suffer birth after birth in this material world until you are delivered back to home, back to Godhead? This person is the bona fide spiritual master.

You Are Super Special

You are a person that Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is expanding from Himself exclusively for the purpose of enjoying a loving relationship with Him. Therefore you are super special and very dear to this topmost of all personalities. This is why you are doing yourself the greatest disservice if you remain in this material world vainly trying to enjoy separately from Krishna. Why be an insignificant nobody suffering like anything in this material existence when you can instead be a highly significant somebody eternally enjoying an exclusive, sweet relationship with the all-beautiful, all-powerful, all-renounced, all-knowing, all-wealthy, and all-famous Krishna?

Testimonial from Jaga Jiva Jagannatha Das

I have been reading Thought for the Day for several years from now. From where I live, I get the post early in the morning. It is almost the first thing that I do before I start my work. The main post which is followed by the Question/Answer section gives me a lot siksha (knowledge, teaching), and this helps me to be in a Krishna conscious mood while at work. It also has a positive influence in how I deal with my office colleagues.

I thank you for your great work that is guiding people like us in understanding the need to take up to devotional service seriously be it preaching or sadhana (practice).

When Will the World Recognize Its Leaders?

The whole world is waiting for a leader who can bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to the entire global society, a leader who is completely free of any kind of cheating exploitative mentality, a leader who has no desire in his heart other than the welfare of living beings. That leader has already come. But the problem is that people are so blind that they do not recognize him. That leader is His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Even though Srila Prabhupada has departed from this world, he is being purely represented by those who are strictly following him. This makes his loyal followers the factual current leaders on this planet. We pray that the world will wake up and take full guidance from the Prabhupadanugas, those who are strictly following the path chalked out by His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada.

Testimonial from Trivikram Das

"Thought for the Day" by His Grace Sankarshan Das Adhikari is truly an inspiring and guiding light in my life. Initially, I subscribed to the "Thought for the Day" in a very casual manner. Little did I know that these thoughts which are nothing but 'Nectar drops' would change my life forever. This email is a beacon of light for me. The content is like containing a mind of its own whereby it exactly points to the problems that I am facing and thinking about and gives me the solution to those.

These emails have not only solved my various problems of life, but also have enriched my life that it is not filled with only happiness. I am very much influenced by Sankarshan Prabhu's thoughts and words so much so that I have not only started following him, but also accepted him as my spiritual master.

I would strongly recommend anyone and everyone to subscribe to these letters. One has only to gain immensely from this and nothing to lose. I invite everyone to join and experiment reading these thoughts.

Question: What Is a Brahmacari?

My dear Srila Gurudeva and Guru Mataji.

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

What is brahmacari?

My understanding of what it means to be a brahmacari:

It is student position. You should get training spiritual and material, practical and theoretical. Traditionally for 20 years. After 20 years you are qualified to start a family and maintain it from training what you got. Otherwise to remain brahmacari and then you start to prepare for sannyasa.

What changes in brahmacari`s life from before finishing 20 years course of training and after 20 years? Please correct my understanding if needed.

Your eternal servant,
V.K.

Answer: Celibate Student Totally Dedicated to His Guru

A brahmacari is a celibate student who has no other duty except to serve his spiritual master.

A brahmacari has three options for his future. He can get married. He can take sannyasa. Or he can stay brahmacari. But these are only external considerations. His is only real business is to be a completely sold out servant of his spiritual master. All he has to do is focus 100% on this and then Krishna will take care of everything else positioning him always in the best circumstances for his steady spiritual progress.

After 20 years of properly accepted brahmacari training, the brahmacari will have learned how to totally focus his consciousness on always pleasing his spiritual master with his every thought, word, and deed in all times, places, and circumstances. The only difference between before 20 years and after 20 years of training is that the brahmacari will be more Krishna conscious.

Ecstasy at Mangala-Arati First Thing in the Morning

There is nothing sweeter than rising early in the morning to attend mangala arati. It is the most enlivening and beautiful way to begin one's day. Srila Prabhupada writes about it in his purport to verse 3 of the Nectar of Instruction:

"In this Krishna consciousness movement we require everyone to rise early in the morning, by four A.M., and attend mangala-arati, or morning worship, then read Srimad-Bhagavatam, perform kirtana, and so forth. Thus we hold continuous activities in devotional service twenty-four hours daily. This is called sato vrtti, or following in the footsteps of the previous acaryas who expertly filled every moment of time with Krishna conscious activities."

Everyone can attend mangala-arati and receive an auspicious blessing upon their day. In fact the very name "mangala" means "auspicious." So anyone who attends mangala arati will have an auspicious day. Those who live the temple or near the temple can attend mangala-arati at the temple. And those who live far away from the temple can have mangala-arati at their own home or attend it at the home of another devotee who lives nearby.

My name is Sagar, I am originally from Mumbai (India) but am currently doing my MBA in the United States.

My father has always been a very spiritually inclined person, and when I started asking him questions about our existence and life, he recommended me to the Ultimate Self Realization E-learning course.

I look forward to Gurudeva's beautiful "Thoughts for the Day" and questions asked by ardent and/or neophyte devotees. This course has enabled me to understand why we exist at all and how we have become slaves to sense pleasure completely forgetting about our true spiritual roots.

This course has also encouraged me to chant "Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare" on a regular basis. Chanting God's name relieves me from anxieties and helps me feel at ease with my body and soul.

I strongly recommend subscribing to the E-Learning course especially for those people who are looking for answers to life and want to connect with God at a deeper level. It is going to be a life changing experience, you can count me on that !

Question: How to Be Free From Laziness?

Hare Krishna, Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

My question is as follows:

I am very lazy, and I am not very sincere about spirituality. So is it my fault, or is this lazy propensity and insincerity due to my past karma? I am very nervous due to this. So I humbly request you to enlighten me by your nectarean instructions and clear my doubt.

Trying to be your humble servant,

Answer: Chant Hare Krishna. Take Shelter of Guru and Krishna.

Your past karma is your fault, and your laziness, which is stemming from your past karma, is therefore also your fault. The good news is that by chanting Hare Krishna and taking shelter of guru and Krishna you will throw off the influence of your past karma and become an enthusiasm power house. So do that.

Your claim of insincerity is false because anybody who can write as you have written me is one of the most sincere people in the entire world.

"I-Ness" Is Not False

The Mayavadi philosophers and the Buddhist philosophers tell us that our sense of "I-ness" or individual identity is false. The Mayavadis say that the only reality is impersonal oneness. But if everything is one, how could the so-called illusion of duality exist? It would be impossible for it to exist. And the Buddhists tell us that the only reality is nothingness or void. If everything is nothing, how could the philosophy of nothingness exist? It would be impossible for it to exist. So in spite of these attacks from the Mayavadis and Buddhists on the existence of the individual self, the individual self still exists as the eternal servant of Krishna.

Question: What Does Krishna Want from Me?

Dear Spiritual Father,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

And You told to me that I should pray for guidance from Krishna how to keep my restless mind fixed on Him. I would have liked to served you also in other ways. What does Krishna want from me? How can I serve Him here at home? How to get started and do it better.

Thank You for You help and patience, and lots of love to you there in the Holy Land.

Sincerely,

Your Servant

Answer: Follow Your Spiritual Master's Orders

My Dear Spiritual Daughter,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Thank you very much for your sincere love and your mood of surrender to the instructions of the spiritual master. This loving, submissive mode is the secret of success how we can rapidly advance ourselves on the pathway of Krishna consciousness.

Since I am dedicated as your spiritual master for taking you back to home, back to Godhead, if you will focus your consciousness fully now for going back to home, back to Godhead by always hearing about Krishna, chanting His holy names, and serving your Gaura Nitai deities there in your home, you will be rendering the best of all personal service to me. For most of our students we recommend that they attend their nearest ISKCON temple regularly. But in your case, because you live three hours away from your nearest ISKCON temple you should focus your spiritual life around your home altar and be always pleasing your spiritual master by being fully obedient to his order to always remember Krishna and never forget Krishna.

Here's how you can serve your beloved Gaura Nitai deities:

Rise early every morning before sunrise. Take your bath, wake your deities, offer them two milk sweets, and then offer them mangala arati. Chant your 16 rounds nicely, read the Srimad Bhagavatam and then prepare a nice breakfast for your transcendental Lords. Then you may honor prasadam and go to your job. (Whenever time permits you can also bath and dress your deities after mangala arati.)

When you return in the evening, take another bath and offer your deities hot milk and some foodstuffs. After giving them some time to enjoy their prasadam you should then offer them arati and put them to rest for the night. Then you may honor prasadam and read from Srila Prabhupada's books before you take your rest.

In this way, you will please me greatly just as much as if your were traveling all over the world with me as my personal servant, Of course, whenever you can come and be with me during my travels your personal service will always be most welcome.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Qualification for Krishnizing this Planet

As followers of Lord Caitanya it is our duty to inundate this entire planet with Krishna consciousness. However, if we are to have any success at all in doing this, we must become qualified by mastering the art of engaging all of our senses in the service of Krishna. As long as we are the servants of our senses we will not be very effective in flooding this planet with Krishna consciousness. But to the extent that we become the masters of our senses to that extent we will be effective in making the world Krishna conscious.

Question: Does Krishna Forgive Me for My Sins?

I have a very strange fear of God these days that is inexplicable. I am always worried of offending Him. For example if my feet touch any piece of paper by mistake walking on the road I feel a compulsion to ask for forgiveness. Same if I spill or step on water or anything I believe should not be touching feet. This is not on a small scale. It happens all the time and I cannot act normally. I cannot just simply step on a newspaper on the floor in the bus. I have to pick it up and ask for forgiveness. I am always scared of God and this affects my love for Him. I cannot love Him freely if I always see Him as someone who always judges and punishes me for every little thing. Also when I spoke to a lady generally about karma that what goes around comes around she said our God forgives. You know she meant Lord Jesus.

I really love God, and I try, but being human I cannot please Him all the time. I cannot stop walking on the road or avoid certain behavior. I have had some bad experiences in life, and I always think God is punishing me and am very tired now. Don't know how to please Him. Does Krishna not forgive? Do I have to pay for absolutely every known or unknown wrong I ever did?

Please help me love Him better

Sincerely
L.M.

Answer: If You Surrender Unto Him

Actually you are doing nothing more than punishing yourself. If you will simply take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master and chant Lord Krishna's names with love, Krishna will forgive you for all the sins you have ever committed in millions of births, and you will be able to live your life in a state of unlimited happiness pleasing Krishna 24 hours daily.

And don't worry about committing an offense by stepping on some water or a piece of paper. This is simply your foolish imagination. Scripture we cannot step on, but there is no offense for stepping on an ordinary newspaper or scrap of paper.

It's true that Jesus forgives and takes upon himself the reactions of the sins of those who surrender to Him. But these so-called Christians are such rascals that they continue sinning and heaping more and more suffering upon poor Jesus Christ. The Bible says that it is a sin to kill, but these nonsense characters are running huge slaughterhouses all over the world killing millions of innocent animals every day simply to satisfy their lust to taste blood. And they want to heap all of their sinful reactions upon Jesus Christ. Just see how selfish and ungrateful they are. This is not love of Jesus or love of God. This is love of eating bloody flesh.

Today's Thought:

Tolerate That Itch

The desire for material sense gratification is an itch. If you give in and scratch it, the itch will become worse. And if you scratch it again, it will become even more worse. Scratch it a third time and it will become unbearable. Therefore the intelligent thing to do is be tolerant of the itch. Do not scratch it, no matter how intolerable it may become. In this way the itch will gradually go away.

This itch for material sense gratification is manifested in the form of the desires for illicit sex, intoxication, meat eating, and gambling. Therefore one should strictly avoid indulging in these, while simultaneously finding his happiness in chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra. In this way he will find unlimited peace and happiness within his heart and will be able to bestow unlimited peace and happiness upon the suffering people of this planet.

Question: Is It Okay to Dance Before the Deities?

Is it okay to dance in front of the Deities if one has not developed the attitude of dancing for the pleasure of Lord?

In submissive mood and with humble respects,

Sunil

Answer: You Must Dance Before the Deities

The attitude of dancing for the pleasure of Lord Krishna is already present with you. So even if you do not feel like dancing, if you will dance anyway, the natural desire you have to dance for Krishna’s pleasure will become manifested, and you will happily find yourself dancing in ecstasy for the pleasure of Krishna. So feeling or no feeling you should always dance.

Ecstatic Pilgrimage to Rajasthan Was Cancelled

Due to hail the size of golf balls with more heavy storms predicted, our pilgrimage to Rajasthan was cancelled. Here's the hail that fell outside our window:

As seen in this photo below taken just outside our ashram hundreds of cars and buses had their windows knocked out:

Even though our pilgrimage was cancelled, let's go there virtually and get the same benefit as going there physically:

If we had had the ecstatic darshan of Madana Mohana in Karauli, Rajasthan, our next stop after another three hour drive would have been Lord Govinda, the beloved deity of Srila Rupa Goswami. Govinda along with Radha is being worshipped in a temple especially built for Him within the palace grounds of the king of Jaipur.

Govinda is the predominating deity of abhidheya, which means acting in Krishna consciousness. We pray for His mercy that we can be fully absorbed in the process of Krishna consciousness.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada explains in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila 7.73:

"According to the Vedic principles, there are three stages of spiritual advancement, namely, sambandha-jnana, abhidheya and prayojana. Sambandha-jnana refers to establishing one's original relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, abhidheya refers to acting according to that constitutional relationship, and prayojana is the ultimate goal of life, which is to develop love of Godhead (prema pum-artho mahan). If one adheres to the regulative principles under the order of the spiritual master, he very easily achieves the ultimate goal of his life."

From Madana Mohana we get sambandha-jnana, establishing our relationship with Krishna as His servant, from Govinda we get abhidheya, to be engaged in His devotional service, and from Gopinatha we get prayojana.

After seeing Madana Mohana in Karauli and Lord Govinda in Jaipur, our next stop would have been Gopinatha also in Jaipur. Gopinatha is the predominating deity of prayojana, the perfection of Krishna consciousness. Lord Caitanya instructed Srila Rupa Goswami as follows:

"The Vedic literatures give information about the living entity's eternal relationship with Krishna, which is called sambandha. The living entity's understanding of this relationship and his acting accordingly is called abhidheya. Returning home, back to Godhead, is the ultimate goal of life and is called prayojana."
--Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya 20.124

Question: Different Kinds of Devotees

I read that there are different kinds of devotees:

1. Pseudo Devotees
2. Neophyte Devotees
3. Pure Devotees

Could you please give an example of each?

And what is the difference between Krishna consciousness and devotional service?

Your servant.

Isvar Puri

Answer: Here's the Difference

One who engages in sinful activities and presents himself as a devotee is a pseudo devotee.

One who sincerely practices bhakti but has not yet realized the goal is a neophyte devotee.

One who has fully realized Krishna is a pure devotee.

There is no difference between Krishna consciousness and devotional service. They are the same.

Ecstatic Pilgrimage to Rajasthan

Today we are heading out at 4am on an ecstatic pilgrimage road trip to see the three principle deities of Vrindavana: Madana-mohana, Govinda, and Gopinatha. In the year 1670 A.D. these deities had to be secretly removed from Vrindavana because the army of the Muslim tyrant Aurangzeb was coming on his order to destroy them and the temples of Vrindavana. They were taken to Rajasthan, and were under the protection of the powerful Vaisnava king Maharaja Jai Singh II.

Our first stop after a three hour drive of 158 kilometers is the remote Rajastani village Karauli where Madana Mohana is presently being worshipped. He was originally worshipped by Santana Goswami in Vrindavana on top of a hill overlooking the Yamuna River. These three deities are especially important to the followers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, the Gaudiya Vaisnavas. In this connection Krishnadas Kaviraja Goswami has written in his great Vaisnava classic, the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, as follows:

"These three Deities of Vrindavana [Madana-mohana, Govinda and Gopinatha] have absorbed the heart and soul of the Gaudiya Vaisnavas [followers of Lord Caitanya]. I worship Their lotus feet, for They are the Lords of my heart."--CC, Adi 1.19

The three Deities -- Madana-mohana, Govinda and Gopijana-vallabha (Gopinatha) -- have very specific qualities. Worship of Madana-mohana is on the platform of reestablishing our forgotten relationship with the Personality of Godhead. In the material world we are presently in utter ignorance of our eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord. Pangoh refers to one who cannot move independently by his own strength, and manda-mateh is one who is less intelligent because he is too absorbed in materialistic activities. It is best for such persons not to aspire for success in fruitive activities or mental speculation but instead simply to surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The perfection of life is simply to surrender to the Supreme. In the beginning of our spiritual life we must therefore worship Madana-mohana so that He may attract us and nullify our attachment for material sense gratification. This relationship with Madana-mohana is necessary for neophyte devotees. When one wishes to render service to the Lord with strong attachment, one worships Govinda on the platform of transcendental service. Govinda is the reservoir of all pleasures. When by the grace of Krishna and the devotees one reaches perfection in devotional service, he can appreciate Krishna as Gopijana-vallabha (Gopinatha), the pleasure Deity of the damsels of Vraja.

Tomorrow we will tell you about Govinda, the second deity of this holy Vrindavana trinity.

Question: How to Feel Difference Between Soul and Body?

Hare Krishna ,

I am always reading your e-mails. But today I have a question after reading "Within and Beyond this World." How to feel difference between soul and body ?

Regards,
Shashikant

Answer: Deeply Ponder the Answers to these Questions

Here's the technique. Ask yourself these questions and deeply ponder the answers:

Are you eyes seeing or are you seeing through your eyes? Are your ears hearing or are you hearing through your ears? Is your tongue tasting, or are you tasting through your tongue? Is your nose smelling, or are you smelling through your nose? Is your skin feeling or are you feeling through your skin? What is that body, and what are you?

In this way if you will deeply ponder and analyze all of your senses you can feel the difference between your actual self, the soul, and the covering of the actual self, the material body.

Men Have Become Lower than Animals

Present day human beings on this planet have so much lost contact with the underlying spiritual reality that pervades all of existence that they are now often eating simply for the sake of eating even when they do not require any food and thus becoming dangerously obese. Also they are now indulging in sex simply for the sake of sex even when they do not desire to produce any children. And if any children come, they murder them.

Show me any animals who eat when they do not require food. Show me any animals who routinely murder their offspring. Which species is polluting the earth's atmosphere and gradually turning it into a toxic waste dump? The time has come for the entire world to take to Krishna consciousness as a matter of mere survival on this planet if for no other reason. Does anybody else have a practical solution?

Question: How Much Practice to Reach Anartha-Nivritti Stage?

Most often I had been listening to your lectures. In one of your lectures you had mentioned about the bhakti yoga advanced stages of anartha-nivritti (clearing out all the weeds from the hear), nishta (fixity in Krishna consciousness), and ruci (transcendental taste). I really liked the concept of the weeds of lust, greed, anger, madness, illusion and envy being thrown completely out from the core of the heart at the root level. How much practice of Krishna consciousness is required for a neophyte devotee to reach the stage of anartha-nivritti?

Thank you,

Hare Krishna,

Radha Ramana

Answer: An Entire Lifetime of Practice

Typically it will take the neophyte devotee his entire lifetime to get completely free from these anarthas or weeds. By taking complete shelter of Lord Krishna at the time a death he can finally cast away all of the lust, greed, anger, madness, illusion, and envy that has tortured him for millions of lifetimes. Of course, in the rare cases of highly advanced devotees this stage of complete freedom from all the dirt in the heart can be accomplished even within the devotee's life before he leaves his body.

It should be also noted in this connection that one who enthusiastically embraces the struggle of trashing his anarthas is as good as liberated even while he continues with his endeavor to purify all of his senses and conquer the anarthas. In other words he experiences ever-increasing transcendental bliss as he proceeds step by step closer and closer to Krishna. This is the mood that we should be in to completely drive away all contamination from our hearts. And who knows? By the special grace of Krishna, we can become fully awakened in pure love of Godhead and see Krishna face to face, even before we leave our present material bodies.
