How You Can Help

Save the World

At the present moment our course has over 16,000 subscribers. Although this may seem like a lot, this is a mere pittance compared to the full outreach potential of the Internet. Therefore our desire is to expand our subscriber base more and more to reach a much larger portion of the over 3 billion people (more than 40% of the world’s population) who are currently using the Internet. If we can at least expand up to 1 billion subscribers, we are confident that this will have a significant impact on the entire global civilization.

So please send us the names and email addresses of anyone you think might be willing to give this course a try, and we will invite them on your behalf to try it.

Today's Thought:

Don't Throw Your Life Away

There is one goal and one goal only you should have for your life, that is to become a pure devotee of Krishna. In the grand scheme of things nothing else has any genuine significance. Even if, by the execution of great penances and austerities, you were to attain the post of Lord Brahma, the topmost demigod in this universe, this would only be temporary, and then you would be dragged down by laws of nature to become a worm in stool once again. Therefore don't waste your time foolishly playing around in misery. Get out of this material existence while you have a golden opportunity in this human form of life. Regain your original identity beyond all the sufferings of this material existence by fully surrendering yourself at the lotus feet of guru and Krishna.

Sriman Sankarshan Adhikari Prabhu's Ultimate Self Realization Course is an ultimate gift for all. Often materialists like me try to run away from the Lord's mercy by giving the most common excuse: I have no time.

Via this course, Sankarshan Prabhu has extended his mercy to fallen souls, that now we can keep our connection with Krishna active (with the help of his Thought for the Day and his answers to questions).

It's very common for fallen souls like me or even neophyte devotees to get confused at any step in life. From the knowledge that I have, Sankarshan Prabhu has spent more than 40 years in serving Krishna and serving Prabhupada's mission in the association of devotees.

Getting answers from such a great devotee on the basis of sastras is of immense importance and thanks to him for making it available so easily. It is a matter of fortune for fallen souls like me to connect with Srila Prabhupada's direct disciple so easily.

I again and again thank him for giving his association through the course, and I request everyone to join this course.

Question: What Foods Should I Eat?

Dear Sir,

In the Bhagavad-gita I read that only those who eat sattvic foods are eligible to go back to home, back to Godhead. But I do not know where such foods are available in my city. I also do not know the names of the sattvic foods. Please suggest.

Answer: Only Eat Krishna Prasadam

You should simply take fruits, grains, vegetables, and dairy products that have been offered to Lord Sri Krishna with love and devotee. You must strictly avoid meat, fish, eggs, onions, and garlic. By eating only foods which have been offered to Krishna you will become purified. You will be more healthy, more intelligent, more compassionate, and more happy. Such food is called Krishna prasadam, the mercy of Krishna, because when you offer such foods to Krishna they become transformed from matter into spirit. And when you eat them you consciousness will also be transformed from material into spiritual. So from now on for the rest of your life, don't put any food into your mouth unless it is Krishna prasadam.

Krishna Prasadam, the Miracle Food

From Srila Prabhupada we have learned about the wonderful glories of Krishna prasadam. A Krishna conscious person, who only eats food offered with love and devotion to Krishna, counteracts all the reactions of his past sinful activities, which are impediments to his progress on the path of self-realization. On the other hand, one who does not do so continues to increase the volume of his karmic reactions, and thus prepares his next body to resemble hogs and dogs, to suffer the resultant reactions of his sins. The material world is full of all sorts of contamination, but one who is immunized by accepting prasadam of the Lord (foods offered to Lord Sri Krishna with love and devotion) is saved from the attack, whereas one who does not do so becomes subjected to contamination.

Question: Why Do I Enjoy Nice Foodstuffs?

Please accept my humble obeisances
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada

Even though I am not this body, I enjoy when my body eat nice foodstuffs. Why is this? Please kindly help me clarify this doubt.

Your servant,

Indriyesa Das

Answer: Real and Illusory Pleasure

Even though one is not his body, because he considers his body to be his self, he experiences an illusory sense of satisfaction when his tongue tastes palatable dishes. This enjoyment is fleeting and temporary. It does not satisfy the self.

However, when a devotee tastes prasadam, palatable dishes that have been offered to Lord Sri Krishna with love and devotion, he is experiencing something quite different. The pleasure of the tongue is also there, but his experience goes much deeper than that because by taking prasadam the devotee is giving pleasure to the Lord Sri Krishna, the source of all existence. When you give pleasure to Krishna, because He is the root of all existence, you are giving benefit to all living beings everywhere. Therefore there is nothing more genuinely satisfying for the actual self and all living beings throughout all of existence than honoring Krishna prasadam in a sweet mood of loving devotion.

Onwards to Mauritius to Taste and Share More Nectar

28 May 2015--After a brief stopover in the United Kingdom on which I gave two lectures at ISKCON's Bhaktivedanta Manor near Watford, we are heading out tonight on an overnight flight to Mauritius, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. There is nothing more sublime than talking about Krishna. I am very thankful to Lord Krishna that He has blessed me with so many opportunities to vibrate His glories before so many receptive audiences all the world. The more that the people on this planet become eager to hear about Krishna, the more this planet will become magically transformed into a spiritual paradise.

Question: How to Conquer Over Anger?

I have been in frequent contact with the ISKCON devotees for more than two years. I have taken the commitment of chanting the 16 rounds. I mostly complete it regularly. I had certain bad habits in the past that very few times cross my way, and I fell prey to them. Also I can't control my anger and use inappropriate abusing words to people. I regret it because in this way I am defaming the Krishna Consciousness Movement. Can you please guide me why am I falling prey to Maya so often, even if I am trying my best to engage myself in spiritual activities? Although I have complete faith in Krishna consciousness, still I feel that I am committing the offense of doing sins on the strength of holy Name of the Supreme. Because of these I am mostly frustrated.

Please forgive my offense against You.

Your Servant,

Answer: Use Anger in Krishna's Service

You have not offended me in any way. Rather I am pleased that you are seeking my help in regards to your uncontrolled anger problem. The solution is easy. If you will channel your anger in the proper way by preaching as much as possible against the demoniac civilization, which has totally ruined the lives the world population, you will no longer be the slave of anger. You should be the master of anger by using it in Krishna’s service, rather the slave of anger. Just as Hanuman and Arjuna used anger in Krishna’s service, you should also use anger in Krishna’s service. The easiest way to get facility to do this is to participate with the devotees when they go out to distribute Srila Prabhupada's books to the general population. In this way you will get a very good opportunity for preaching and using your anger nicely in Krishna's service.

The Vaisnava Wants to Deliver All Fallen Souls

The Vaisnava is an ocean of mercy because he wants to deliver all the suffering souls of this world back to home, back to Godhead. Therefore his every thought, word, and deed in all times places and circumstances is for the ultimate benefit of all livings throughout this vast material existence. Just as Krishna is the best friend of all living beings, the Vaisnava is also the best friend of all living beings. Question: No Anger When Others are Irresponsible?

My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

How to get rid of the agitated mind. One should be equipoised in all circumstances and remain in peaceful mind. But I am not able to. I realized it yesterday that I am not able to remain equipoised in all situations. Yesterday I got angry at my devotee friend. It's due to her irresponsible behavior and carelessness.

Please enlighten this fallen soul.
Thank you!

Answer: Sometimes Anger Must Be Shown for Training Others

Sometimes for the sake of preaching we must speak strongly to correct others for their nonsensical behavior. If we are instructing them according to the teachings of Krishna, sincerely doing so for their benefit, there is nothing wrong for a preacher to sometimes show some anger. This does not mean that we can lose our temper and become offensive. It simply means that for training others how to properly behave in Krishna’s service, we sometimes must show anger in order to convince them to take our instructions seriously.

Spiritual Revolutionary Lifestyle

26 May 2015--Today we are taking off on another around-the-world lecture tour. On this tour I will be speaking about Krishna and Krishna consciousness in London, Mauritius, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Australia, and Los Angeles. I am very thankful to Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna for giving me this blissful, most meaningful spiritual revolutionary lifestyle in which it is natural to be fully absorbed 24 hours daily in Krishna consciousness. I can't imagine any greater boon than this. Indeed, I have been blessed with the ultimate boon. Now it is my duty to, as far as possible, share this ultimate boon with everyone I meet. They will be greatly benefitted, and I will also be greatly benefitted, because the more you give Krishna, the more you get Krishna.

Question: Is Jesus Christ the Son of Allah?

Is Jesus Christ the son of Allah? And is Allah is the Supreme Person from whom the sun and everything emanates? I know that Krishna is the Supreme Lord. Then how is Allah related to Krishna? And how to explain it to others?

Your servant,

Answer: Name May Be Different, But Substance is Same

Allah is the Arabic word for God. There are many languages in the world. In each of the languages we find a word for God. For example in Spanish the word for God is "Dios." Because the Vedic culture is the most God conscious culture in history, in its Sanskrit language there are thousands and millions of names for God, of which Krishna is the chief name.

The name may be different, but the substance or that which is referred to is the same. For example, I may say in English "water" when I refer to that liquid which we all drink. A Spanish speaking person will say "agua." Does this does mean that the substance is different? No. The name may be different, but the substance is the same. When it comes to the many names of God in the many different languages of the world, the principle is the same. There is only one Supreme Person, one source for all of existence. He has many, many names but He always remains the same Supreme Person.

Some Muslims nowadays object if non-Muslims refer to God as Allah. This means that they are not well schooled in the science of God. They take God as something sectarian, which He clearly is not. They think that only they have access to God. But He is father of everyone: Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Jews, atheists, etc. Instead of objecting when non-Muslims accept Allah as a name of God, they should be glad that their name for God is gaining universal acceptance.

Don't forget. The smallest, most seemingly insignificant action if based on transcendental vision can set off a chain of events to completely transform the course of universal history. Question: How Can Be Sure That We Won't Fall Again?

Regarding the 25 May 2015 Question and Answer and I have a question. If we all were in the spiritual world with Krishna and because of our free will we were sent to earth, how can we be so sure that we will not return back to this material world after going home back to Godhead?

By serving Krishna and Radharani, we are preparing ourselves to go home back to Godhead either in this life or the next. But because of our free will, will we be sent back to this material world again? I might as well consider that we are fortunate to be in this material world and this is the only time we have to enjoy. Why worry if we are going to come back again and there is no guarantee of not returning back?

I don't mean to ridicule anybody but I think it is very crucial for me to understand our scriptures so that I would be ready to answer such questions if it comes my way during preaching process.

Your Servant

Answer: "Once burned, I learned."

"Once burned, I learned." When the jiva experiences the hell of material life and goes back to Godhead he will have learned his lesson well and will not fall down again. This is why Krishna declares that those who return back to Godhead do not fall again.

It is not that we are sent to the material world against our will. We desired a place where we could try to enjoy separately from Krishna, and He simply facilitated our desire.

How can you be so foolish to think that you are fortunate to be in this miserable material world?

Lesson from Power Outage in Austin

24 May 2015--4:20am--Last night a heavy rain/lightning storm with tornados blew through the Austin area. Heavy winds in our neighborhood knocked over trees and a wooden fence. Our temple suffered only minor damage. Now we are among 19,600 residences that are without electrical power for the last six hours. Fumbling in the dark at 4:00am trying to do our morning program, wondering how we are going to cook the Sunday feast without our electric stove/oven, I am seeing how much dependent we are on electricity for so many of the things that we do. This reminds me of how much we are even more dependent on Krishna, the supreme provider of power, for absolutely everything that we do, even for our very existence. I am hoping that for the sake of our service to Krishna that our electrical power will soon be restored and hoping even more that Krishna consciousness can become fully restored on this bewildered planet to bring the bewildered humanity back to sanity.

Testimonial from Ruben:
Manifestations of God's Presence

After reading in Thought for the Day on Friday May 15 the hopeful assurances of my sister Shyamapriya Devi Dasi I asked myself, "How I can accept this message if I am a Catholic, a disciple of Jesus? This would be a contradiction to my faith."

After this spiritual confrontation, I felt the need to listen to the Master A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and after doing this, I opened the Thought for the Day of 18 May and read these words from Sankarshan Das Adhikari:

"Don't cheat yourself by being a slave of maya or illusion. You are an eternal spiritual being qualitatively one with God. While it may appear very attractive to gratify your senses whenever they request to be gratified, the reality is that you have nothing to do with your material senses. They are just a covering of your actual self. Therefore as long as you remain on the platform of material sense gratification you will never be able to taste or experience the genuine unlimited pleasure of your actual spiritual existence. Quasi-spiritualists talk about God and self-realization, but they take God as someone who facilitates their material sense gratification. Such "God consciousness" is not God consciousness at all. It is sense gratification consciousness masquerading as God consciousness. Real God consciousness is taught both by Lord Jesus and Lord Krishna. Real God consciousness means to fully surrender unto Krishna or God accepting everything in your life which is pleasing to Him and rejecting from your life whatever is displeasing to Him. This the real platform of spiritual realization, of unlimited happiness which every living needs to come to as soon as possible if they are going to be genuinely satisfied with their life. Otherwise they will remain frustrated and confused just like Arjuna was in the opening pages of the Bhagavad-gita."

In our Catholic religion we call experiences like what I got from Prabhupada and Thought for the Day to be manifestations of the presence of the Lord.

Question: Were We Originally With Krishna in the Spiritual World?

I have a doubt about the existence of the soul. I heard two theories about its existence.

In one, I was told that we were all present with Krishna in the spiritual world and due to being envious of Krishna we were transferred to the material planets.

Today one senior devotee in ISKCON Chennai told me that the scriptures tell that from time immemorial we have had free will to either to love Krishna or to enjoy separately without Krishna.

I want to know the actual truth regarding our existence with any references so that I can show him, Maharaja.

Please forgive me if I have presented my question improperly.

Hare Krishna

Answer: Yes, But We Foolishly Left

Both things you have heard are true. We are all the eternal residents of the spiritual world who possess the free will to remain in our natural position as Krishna's servants or, like a foolish fish who tries to enjoy living on the land, to defy our natural position by coming to this material world to try enjoy separately from Krishna.

Declaring an All-Out War Against Maya

The entire world society is deeply entangled in the clutches of illusion. Therefore the only way to free them is to declare an all-out war against maya or illusion. The truth must be spoken. Otherwise illusion continues. Just as the doctor has a duty to honestly tell his patient what is wrong with him and what he must do in order to be cured, similarly the bona fide spiritual master has a duty to honestly point out to his disciple what are his faults along with giving the means by which the disciple can rectify the faults. This is the kindness of the spiritual master.

Question: How to Make the Entire World Krishna Conscious?

Recently the Maharashtra state government in India banned cow slaughter in the state. But there is so much really frightening opposition that they may lift the ban. So, when even cow slaughter cannot be stopped, how can we dream of making the world Krishna consciousness? It is more than a Herculean task.

Your worthless servant,
Hare Krishna

Answer: Induce Them to Hear the Bona Fide Spiritual Master

Considering the present day world situation, it is certainly inconceivable how it could be possible to bring the entire world to Krishna consciousness. But still we must try. And if even one person can be saved, our mission will be successful. And who knows, by the inconceivable potency of Lord Sri Krishna even the impossible can become possible.

Actually, considering the following words of Srila Prabhupada, there is great hope for the respiritualization of the entire human society:

"The expert spiritual master knows the art of utilizing everything to glorify the Lord, and therefore under his guidance the whole world can be turned into the spiritual abode by the divine grace of the Lord's servant."--from purport to SB 1.5.23

So simply if we can somehow attract the attention of the entire world to hear the teachings of the bona fide spiritual master, in this way the entire world can easily be saved.

In the midst of the most materialistic age of Kali this is no doubt a herculean task of unparalelled proportions. Success in carrying out such a herculean task requires the special mercy of Lord Caitanya, for which we must constantly beg, as well as a herculean effort from us. Question: Why Non-Devotees Don't Appreciate Krishna?

In your recent reply to one Mr. Amit, you said that if one has a loving relationship with Krishna, all other relationship become better and not bitter, just as feeding the belly nourishes all other parts of the body.

The best way to improve loving relationship with Krishna is to preach His word, to tell about His teachings to others. But when I did that even my existing relationship with my ex-friends broke. They are not replying to my mails, call me a bigot. (Both friends from Hindu and other religions). In fact now they look upon me as their enemy, and they even refused to help my old mother when she needed urgent help. Earlier they were helpful. So the relationship has become bitter, for sure. Please let me know why.

In this connection I would like to know if Srila Prabhupada could maintain good relationship with Mayavadis who didn’t like his sermons.

Your worthless servant,
Hare Krishna

Answer: Only a Rare Soul Appreciates Krishna

Sometimes the doctor gives his patient medicines that are bitter. Does it mean that he does not have a good relationship with his patients? No. He is certainly their genuine well-wisher. If someone thinks that their doctor is bad because the medicine is bitter, that is their stupidity. It is not a fault of the doctor. It is their fault. From the doctor's side the relationship is good. Only a fool will not appreciate a qualified physician.

The greatest doctor of all is the devotee of Krishna because he can cure the disease of the soul which has forced the living being to remain caught up in the cycle of birth and death for millions of lifetimes. Those who are genuinely seeking higher knowledge will always appreciate the devotees. But those who are addicted to sense gratification may hate the devotees and even sometimes try to kill them as the attempt was made with Jesus Christ.

Many things can be said about how nicely your emails help in self-realization , but I would tell only few points which come to my mind:

Once on reading your email, I chanted intensely.

Your answers have dispelled many doubts.

Your daily emails have helped to correct malpractices in practicing Krishna Consciousness.

Your emails have been reaching regularly at about the same time, and it is easy to access the emails.

The language of your emails not only make it easy to understand the concepts, but also help how to correct others while preaching.

At times, reading your emails automatically completes the reading of verse of Gita , which I would have planned to do for the morning.

The myth of sectarianism regarding Krishna Consciousness have been very nicely vanquished by your daily emails. Thus, many persons are inspired to take to this process irrespective of their nationality and cultural practices.

Your emails help to dive deeply into the process and make it a lifestyle not only to give the process respect.

You are very easy to approach and it is easy to send questions to you even if the questions are trivial.

The online direct broadcasts and audio meetings are ecstatic.

It is nice to know that the Transcendental Fund Drive succeeded.

Answer: When You Love Krishna, You Love Everyone Perfectly

To maintain a good relationship of proper nourishment with all the parts of your body you need to feed the belly properly. When you do that the nourishment will naturally go to all parts of your body. If you don’t feed the belly, the relationship with all of your other bodily parts will not be proper.

Similarly, if you neglect to establish a loving relationship with Krishna, every other loving relationship you attempt to develop will sooner or later lead to frustration. And if you love Krishna, you will have a perfect relationship with all living beings.

ISKCON: A Loving Spiritual Family to Unite the Whole World

When our ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C.. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, was physically present in this world, an astrologer in India predicted that he will build a house in which the whole world can live. This is indeed what Srila Prabhupada has done. The institution he has created, ISKCON, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, is a society which will gradually become so popular that eventually the entire world with all of its leaders will become ISKCON followers. Therefore it is the solemn duty of every ISKCON member to see that the movement is always progressing nicely towards that end.

How to do this? We must always remember and follow the instructions of Srila Rupa Goswami to always be engaged in loving exchanges with the devotees.

It was in December 2013 that I was told about the Ultimate Self Realization Course by a brahmacari, Pyari Mohan Das at the Sri Sri Radhanatha Temple in Durban, South Africa. He warned me that I should only sign up if I will read the emails and answer the assignments (which Gurudeva later mentioned, is not a prerequisite), but now I know that Pyari Mohan Prabhu only said that so that I may reap the full benefit.

I contemplated for the rest of December, while visiting Gurudeva's website and reading his "Thoughts for The Day" there, which were so powerful and full of knowledge that when I got back to work in January 2014, I signed up.

When I received the first lesson, I was happy that I now had an opportunity to understand the Bhagavad-gita As It Is under expert guidance and embark on the journey of self-realization. I did the required reading and answered the assignment expecting that this email would just get lost somewhere in the abyss of cyberspace. Due to my cynicism, I was thinking surely no one would respond... BUT to my immense delight a few days later I received a personalized feedback on my answer. Ever since this first lesson I have been gaining wonderful insights onto my real spiritual nature from the subsequent lessons.

The "Thought for The Day" is the first email I read everyday and by far the most enlivening. Signing up has been a most beneficial decision and I am extremely grateful to Srila Gurudeva and his support team for giving us this opportunity and I sincerely recommend that everyone who is not already enrolled, do so as soon as possible.

First of all I am grateful to Sankarshan Prabhu for such a wonderful and dedicated course for the conditioned souls. From time immemorial we are by default suffering in illusion or Maya consciousness. But now only by the mercy of devotees we are trying to become Krishna conscious. After passing through such a horrible conditioned status of life, birth after birth with different kind of bodies, now only by the mercy of saintly teachers, the holy scriptures and the spiritual master we are trying to recognize our self .

The Ultimate Self Realization Course is one of the guiding lights to support us in our pursuit of Krishna consciousness. In the material world by seeing advertisements repeatedly we become loyal to that product and hence eager to buy the product, in the same way if we see and read the different features of the authorized process of spirituality (Krishna consciousness), we become more dedicated to the aspects of Krishna consciousness.

Each day when I come to my office I first purify myself by the knowledge of the Ultimate Self Realization Course. I request everyone to follow the process of Krishna consciousness very seriously because if you do so, this will be your last lifetime in this miserable material world. Also we should share these teachings with all others so that they may also achieve this state of true happiness, Krishna consciousness.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada and a lot of thanks to Sankarshan Prabhu.

Question: Am I Wrong?

Once you said that Lord fulfills only those material desires which we deserve and not what we desire. If Krishna is so conditional in fulfilling our desires, then how can He in the form of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu teach us to love Him unconditionally? Isn't this cheating? If we have to totally serve Krishna unconditionally, then Krishna also must be unconditional towards us! Am I wrong?

Trying to be your servant,
Vrutant S.

Answer: Yes, You are Mistaken

Yes, you are mistaken. And here's why:

Srila Prabhupada confirms that we get only what we deserve, not what we desire in his book, Teachings of Queen Kunti:

"Our suffering is due to our attachment. Because we are materially attached, we desire so many material things, and therefore Krishna gives us the opportunity to enjoy whatever material facilities we want. Of course, one must deserve these facilities. First deserve, then desire. Suppose I want to become king. I must have pious activities behind me so that I can become king.”

It is wrong to conclude from this that Krishna does not love us unconditionally. Krishna’s uninterrupted unconditional love for us is demonstrated at every minute by His providing all facilities for us to immediately get out of our present suffering condition in which we are completely blinded by the lust for material sense gratification.

You are thinking that Krishna should unconditionally fulfill all of our material desires. But such a thing would keep us entangled eternally in this miserable material existence. Therefore Krishna's not fulfilling all of material desires is another manifestation of His unconditional love for us.

I Want to Attract the Whole World to Chant Hare Krishna

Since the entire human civilization is becoming more and more miserable due to its ever-increasing entanglement in lust, anger, and greed, I want to do something to save these poor souls from their horrible plight. And since the only real solution for solving all of the problems of the world is the revival of everyone's dormant Krishna consciousness, within whatever brief span of time I have available to me in my present body, my desire is that I want to attract the whole world to chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra so that everyone can be fully and genuinely happy.

Question: Chanting While Committing Sins

Hare Krishna, Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

If one is chanting the holy names of Lord and at the same he is doing sinful activity, does this mean that he is guilty of the offenses known as committing sins on the strength of the holy name?

Trying to be your servant,

Answer: Intentional vs. Unintentional

To intentionally engage in sinful activities and chant Hare Krishna for the purpose of neutralizing the effects of those sinful activities is called namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih, sinning on the strength of chanting, and it is the greatest offense in the discharge of devotional service.

This is different from chanting for the purpose of developing pure love of God and sometimes accidently committing sinful activities due to one's past bad habits. Of course such accidental sins are also offensive because they are disobeying the orders of the spiritual master. But they are not as bad as namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhih, intentionally sinning on the strength of chanting,

Don't Cheat Yourself By Being a Slave of Maya

Don't cheat yourself by being a slave of maya or illusion. Real God consciousness means to full surrender unto Krishna or God accepting everything in your life which is pleasing to Him and rejecting from your life whatever is displeasing to Him. This the real platform of spiritual realization, of unlimited happiness which every living being needs to come to as soon as possible if they are going to be genuinely satisfied with their life. Otherwise they will remain frustrated and confused just like Arjuna was in the opening pages of the Bhagavad-gita.

Question: Does Every Soul Go to Yamaraja at the Time of Death?

Respected Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to You and Srila Prabhupada!

Thank you very much for your kind blessings.

With your kind permission I would like to ask a few related questions:

After death, does each soul have to go to Yamaraja, or only human souls before taking up another body?

Do pious souls also have to go?

Hoes does one Yamaraja handle so many souls on a daily basis.

What is the time difference between two bodies?

Warm regards,
Your student

Answer: All Sinful Souls Go to Yamaraja

Only sinful human beings go to the court of Yamaraja. They go at the time of death to be judged and awarded suitable punishments for their sinful activities. Of course, in this age everyone is sinful engaging in all sorts of irreligious activities. Therefore nowadays practically all human beings are headed for the court of Yamaraja at the time death in order to be judged and punished.

Although upon leaving one's present body at the time of death he is immediately transferred to another body, because time is relative within that brief period of time he goes to abode of Yamaraja experiencing his time of punishment as many, many years.

Yamaraja is not an ordinary living being like you and me who can only do one thing a time. He has no difficulty multitasking in his duty of judging and punishing millions of sinful human beings.

Dogmatism is the For the Dogs

An intelligent person does not think dogmatically. He thoughtfully analyzes things from many points of view to gain a clear, cogent understanding of reality. Unfortunately the modern day civilization is descending to the level of barking dogs because it is locked into a quagmire of narrow-minded, dogmatic thinking. The clearest example of this dogmatism is the modern day so-called scientific principle that life arises from a chance combination of dead material elements. Where is there even one example anywhere in the universe of life being produced by a combination of dead material elements? Such an example simply does not exist. Everywhere it is seen that life, not matter, produces life. But yet this dogmatic idea that life comes from matter has become accepted as the philosophical mainstay of the entire world civilization. No wonder we are become more and more like dogs every day on this ever-increasingly troubled planet. It is time for a philosophical revolution to free ourselves from the chains of intellectual slavery.

Question: How to Focus on Chanting When Mind is Agitated?

Gurudeva, please accept my obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Whenever my mind is agitated I can't concentrate on chanting the next morning. While chanting lots of thoughts of the previous day's agitation enter my mind. Thus, it becomes very tough to continue chanting. In such a situation how can I chant offenselessly? Please guide.

Your humble servant,

Answer: Receive Krishna Properly When He Arrives

If your dearmost friend were to drop in for a visit, you would forget your mental agitation. Well, that’s what happens when you chant Hare Krishna. Your dearmost of all friends, Lord Sri Krishna, is dropping in to visit you and bless you. So, all you have to do to forget your agitation is to tune into to the reality the Krishna or God has personally come to bless you with His association. Receive Him properly when He arrives and all your mental agitation will simply melt away.

Today's Thought:

Don't Take a Guru Like Getting a Pet Dog

In a lecture given on 29 September 1974 in Mayapura, Srila Prabhupada explains the guru should not be taken as a pet dog:

"When one accepts somebody as guru, he cannot argue. That is the condition. One must be fully surrendered otherwise there is no meaning of making a guru. It is not like a pet dog, that 'Everyone has a guru, so let me have a guru.' That is not guru. Guru means first of all the condition is pranipata, fully surrendered. Not that, 'If I like, then I shall carry your order. And if I don't like, then I shall not do it.' That is not acceptance of guru. Pranipata. First of all, we must agree. So because friends and friends talking, a friend may agree with his friend. He may not agree with. That is friendly talk. But Arjuna became disciple. Sisyas te 'ham: 'I am now Your sisya, disciple. Now there is no question of disagreeing with You. Whatever You'll say, I will accept.' So at last Krishna said, 'Surrender unto Me.' And Arjuna did it. That is the whole purpose of the Bhagavad-gita."

Srila Prabhupada's point is that unless we accept our guru in full surrender without argument, we haven't really accepted a guru. This means also that we are not surrendered to Krishna's order and that we are also not qualified to go back to Godhead.

Question: Stuck in a Rut. What Am I Doing Wrong?

I am in touch with ISKCON for the last 10 years, but I am lost in the whole process. The philosophy says ,"Chant and be happy," but the more I chant, the more disturbed I get. I am fearful, scared, lonely, not able to face situation, and many such more negative things. Can you please guide me what I am doing wrong?

I am based in Delhi. Can I go and meet some of your disciples who can guide me to come out of this situation? I want to chant 16 rounds, take initiation, and move ahead, But I am stuck.

Please help.

Answer: You Are Committing Offenses Against Krishna's Name

The problem is that you are committing offenses while you are chanting. To taste the nectar of Krishna's name you must chant without offense. The ten offenses to be avoided are as follows:

(1) To blaspheme the devotees who have dedicated their lives for propagating the holy name of the Lord.

(2) To consider the names of demigods like Lord Siva or Lord Brahma to be equal to, or independent of, the name of Lord Vishnu. (Sometimes the atheistic class of men take it that any demigod is as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. But one who is a devotee knows that no demigod, however great he may be, is independently as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, if someone thinks that he can chant "Kali, Kali!" or "Durga, Durga!"and it is the same as Hare Krishna, that is the greatest offense.)

(3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master. (This means you must be fully surrendered to the spiritual master.)

(4) To blaspheme the Vedic literature or literature in pursuance of the Vedic version.

(5) To consider the glories of chanting Hare Krishna to be imagination.

(6) To give some interpretation on the holy name of the Lord.

(7) To commit sinful activities on the strength of the holy name of the Lord. (It should not be taken that because by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can be freed from all kinds of sinful reaction, one may continue to act sinfully and after that chant Hare Krishna to neutralize his sins. Such a dangerous mentality is very offensive and should be avoided.)

(8) To consider the chanting of Hare Krishna one of the auspicious ritualistic activities offered in the Vedas as fruitive activities (karma-kanda).

(9) To instruct a faithless person about the glories of the holy name. (Anyone can take part in chanting the holy name of the Lord, but in the beginning one should not be instructed about the transcendental potency of the Lord. Those who are too sinful cannot appreciate the transcendental glories of the Lord, and therefore it is better not to instruct them in this matter.)

(10) To not have complete faith in the chanting of the holy names and to maintain material attachments, even after understanding so many instructions on this matter.

It's also offensive to be inattentive while chanting.

If you will carefully avoid these ten offenses, you will experience unlimited sweetness in Krishna's names.

I will put you in touch with my disciples in Delhi so that they can help you to purely chant the names of Krishna.

Becoming Strong by Acknowledging Your Weaknesses

Pride is our weakness, and humility is our strength. So instead of proudly being blind to your weaknesses, imagining that you are strong in every way, it is better to honestly recognize and acknowledge your weaknesses. You should find a devotee who can honestly and accurately pinpoint your weaknesses and learn from that devotee. In this way you will become truly strong.

To always keep this humble mood the devotees regularly bow down and offer their obeisances both to the deities in the temple as well as to other devotees, especially to their spiritual master. In this way they become strongly fixed in devotional service to Krishna.

Srila Prabhupada Offers Obeisances to Krishna in the Temple

Testimonial From Shyamapriya devi dasi

Shyamapriya devi dasi

As a kid, I grew up watching my parents worshiping Goddess Durga. In my fifth grade one of my school teachers showed me a picture of Shirdi Sai Baba and said, “Here- this is God.” And I instantly believed without a doubt that this is God. Throughout my school years for the next 8 years I would dedicatedly, every single day pray to ‘God’ and chant respective mantras, until the clouds of dissatisfaction started to appear in my heart. I started to ask questions like why God has to be an old man? Then I tried reading a Bible given by my Christian friend. Even gave a read to the philosophy of Buddhism. Nothing was relieving me from my unknown dissatisfaction.

It was in 10th standard, I saw Hare Krishna mahamantra sticker on my tuition teacher’s cupboard, but I didn’t know its significance then. A year and half later I saw a dream. In that dream, I lost my way to home in a thick dense forest. And out of nowhere a saintly person with a shaven head appeared and pointed his hand to show me the way to my home. And all I could remember from that dream was the dense green forest, the saintly man’s stark blue eyes and his hand pointing towards my home. And for years I kept wondering about that dream only to find the answer a decade later.

In the Autumn of year 2009, sitting in the temple hall of ISKCON Noida, I was this person whom the best of material education failed to give any meaning or purpose to life. All my attempts to find truth ended in vain. Whiplashed by the atrocities of Maya, I was only begging Sri Krishna and Srila Prabhupada (by whose causeless mercy I got acquainted with the movement nearly 7 years back) to send me somebody who truly represents him and teaches me exactly what Srila Prabhupada had taught about the absolute truth. And to my benediction, the speaker of that day was, His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari Prabhu and it was the same day my dear Godsister Her Grace Guruvandana Mataji got initiated. The moment His Grace spoke the following words from his lotus mouth, “ So…Srila Prabhupada said….”. A voice spoke from within my heart so loud that I could not ignore it even if I wanted to. It said, “This is my Guru”. “I found my Guru.” At that time, I didn’t know anything about who Srila Gurudeva was and little did I know His Grace is an initiating spiritual master.

Next year, Srila Gurudeva would come back again to ISKCON Noida to deliver a series of lectures on Pure Devotional service, in which I too got myself enrolled. And on 3rd Oct, 2010 by the mercy of our Gurumataji, Her Grace Vishnupriya Mataji, we got a chance to personally meet Srila Gurudeva. His Grace asked me if I were on his e-course and when I said no, His Grace very mercifully took out his visiting card and gave it to me. And what I saw and read on that card deeply struck me. On that card I saw Srila Gurudeva’s passport size picture, sitting in a dense forest and on it I read My heart melted to my eyes as the forgotten dream came back to my memory and everything made sense. Couple of years later, His Divine Grace, out of his sheer causeless mercy gave me shelter at his cooling lotus feet and despite of full of faults and disqualifications, accepted this low class degenerate as his disciple to take her back home, back to Godhead.

Today and every single day, the first thing I look forward to in my email box is "Thought for the day" by Srila Gurudeva. It has become an absolute essential part of my day, without reading which I don’t feel like my day has started yet. It is tremendously helping me on a daily basis to remain fixed in my spiritual practice and to remain connected to the vani, the instructions of my Sri Guru. I exhilaratingly wait every day for Thought for the Day to see which part of the world is being blessed today by the visit of Srila Gurudeva and Srimati Gurumataji during their tireless preaching tours around the globe. I wait every single day to see what new I could learn from the BRILLIANT question and answer section. So many of my lingering doubts have been cleared over the years through this PERFECT question and answer feature of the e-course.

Whether I am happy, sad or in any state, by simply reading the message in the Thought for the Day uplifts my spirit and keeps me going through thick and thin. Apart from this, I have had some truly amazing experiences, where I received the answers to my day-to-day life dilemmas/problems directly from Sri Guru through the Thought for the Day message.

I humbly request every single soul on this planet Earth to enroll themselves to this unique, one of its kind Ultimate Self Realization E-course. It is absolutely free of cost, and one will be blessed with unlimited good fortune of transcendental knowledge in return. I beg you to seize this once in a lifetime golden opportunity of coming in personal contact with a bona fide and authentic source of transcendental knowledge and systematically and scientifically learn the purpose of our existence and the Absolute Truth.

Answer: Be Prepared to Do Whatever Krishna Wants

The only qualification for being a part of the elite group who wants to bring about a spiritual revolution for the deliverance of the fallen souls on this planet is that you must be always prepared to do whatever Krishna wants. This means that you must be prepared to give up something which you may not like to give up or to accept something which you may not like to accept. If you are prepared in this way to do whatever Krishna wants, you are qualified to help bring about the respiritualization of the human society.

The Ever-Expanding Krishna Consciousness Movement

As I write these words we are making the last leg of our journey from Lithuania to Austin. It has been very refreshing on this trip to encounter Krishna conscious people in various places. In the Vilnius, Lithuania airport as we went through security one of the security personnel said, "Hare Krishna" to us. In London we met a man named Prem, a worker in the airport who has read the Bhagavad-gita and all twelve cantos of the Srimad Bhagavatam of Srila Prabhupada. He is getting ready to read the Bhagavatam in its entirety again. Then in New York, as we entered the security queue, one of airport personnel said, "Hare Krishna" to us. These are auspicious signs that the Krishna consciousness movement is indeed growing. In the past we did not meet Krishna conscious people as often as this. The Krishna consciousness movement will continue expanding more and more until eventually this entire planet and indeed this entire universe will become fully Krishna conscious. This is confirmed by Srila Prabhupada as follows:

"Similarly, since the sankirtana movement was first set in motion five hundred years ago by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's desire that it spread all over the universe, the Krishna consciousness movement, in continuity of that same motion, is now spreading all over the world, and in this way it will gradually spread all over the universe. With the spread of the Krishna consciousness movement, everyone will merge in an ocean of love of Krishna."--from the purport to Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 13, Text 32

What could be a greater adventure than a part of this greatest paradigm shift in modern world history?

Question: Does Krishna Make Us Forget Him?

Lord Sri Krishna states in the Srimad Bhagavad-gita (15.15):

"I am seated in everyone's heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness."

So, would this mean that it is actually due to Lord Krishna, Himself, that the living entities forgot Him at the very beginning and therefore we are in this material world? Wouldn't this give some people the opportunity to blame God even more for their suffering? Or does this "forgetfulness" that the Lord is speaking of, only refer to the forgetfulness of one's past life, as mentioned in Srila Prabhupada's purport?

Thank you very much.
Hare Krishna.

Yours in the service of Srila Prabhupada,

Rishi Kumar Das

Answer: He Only Gives Forgetfulness to Those Who Desire It

This refers to all kinds of forgetfulness, especially forgetfulness of Krishna. Krishna is not to blame because Krishna only gives forgetfulness to those who desire it. When a living entity stubbornly wants to misuse his minute independence by trying to be God or by trying to forget God instead of serving God, Krishna as His well-wishing friend supplies him with the necessary forgetfulness to do just that. This is Krishna’s kindness that He does not force anyone to be His devotee. He gives everyone the choice of whether they want to serve God or to forget God. So if someone chooses not to that is squarely, unequivocally their fault.

Testimonial From Devadeva Das

Devadeva Das

I was born in a religious family, my grandparents instructed me in the evangelical scriptures. As I was growing up, I started looking for the answers to my existence but I did not find anyone who could answer me. My grandfather would only say, “God knows”. For a while I accepted it. When I was 12 years old, I would go out to preach the gospel in the street with a group of pastors from the church, but I didn’t find satisfaction there. Something was missing.

I would pray a lot to the Lord for Him to guide me to the person who would be able to answer my questions about God and my existence. I searched in different religions but I still could not find that person who could really help me.

I met the devotees in Mendoza, Argentina. I found a place that was really helping me. I was very young, about 18 years old; now I am 41. After some time, I withdrew from the movement because my parents wouldn’t let me attend and I lost contact with the devotees, thereby losing my happiness from the holy association with the devotees of Krishna and everything became a disaster.

My life was not very happy after I went away from the devotees of Lord Krishna. I prayed to Lord Krishna to please give me again the incomparable gift of the company of the devotees, because I had lost all contact. They had disappeared. I didn’t know where to find them, and this was how the Lord granted me His mercy:

One day, when I was standing in front of the door where I work, a devotee I had previously met appeared and he suddenly took out some earphones and placed them in my ears and asked me, “Do you remember this, Prabhu?” He was listening to Srila Prabhupada chanting HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE HARE RAMA HARE RAMA RAMA RAMA HARE HARE. I felt the hairs on my body stand on end and I was overcome with emotion and I could not stop laughing and my eyes filled with tears of happiness. This devotee, whom I had not seen in a long time and was already initiated, helped me return to the path.

In April of 2008, while I was looking on the internet for a class by Srila Prabhupada, suddenly the page appeared, and when I saw the picture of Sankarshan Das Adhikari immediately my existence lit up and I could feel that finally I was finding that wonderful person who would save my existence. Every day that went by I wanted to know more about this person who inspired me from the first moment that he appeared, and then, thanks to Prema Bhakti prabhu, whom I thank profoundly for helping me get in contact with my beloved spiritual father, I began the “Ultimate Self-Realization Course” as a student and later serve Srila Gurudeva in the course for Spanish-speaking students. I have the blessing of interacting with many students who are also taking the course and receiving the Spanish edition of “The Thought for the Day” that Gurudeva prepares for the whole world.

My life has become very happy and I pray that the whole world may have the blessing of meeting Srila Gurudeva. He has saved me. Since I met him, my life is dedicated to serve him as much as possible in gratitude for having given me shelter in the shade of his lotus feet. Thanks to Srila Gurudeva, I have been able to understand many of my questions and to know the purpose of life and how to become very happy and blissful. I pray that Sri Krishna to always keep me engaged in the service of my spiritual master life after life if He so desires.

I recommend “The Ultimate Self-Realization Course” for the sincere seeker, for the whole world, and may you become very enthusiastic in your spiritual awakening. It really works. Get ready to become very happy.

Question Faith in Extraordinary Scriptural Descriptions?

Could You please kindly explain:

When we read Srimad Bhagavatam we hear about things that sound wondrous (especially in Kali yuga). For example, Ananta Sesa who holds the universe or demigods churning the milk ocean or pastimes of Lord Varaha. What to do with the bewilderment and amazement that occurs? How to understand these facts correctly?

Your servant,

Answer: Believe and Apply Scriptures to Realize God

We accept whatever is stated in Srimad Bhagavatam as fact, even though it may sound completely inconceivable to us how such a thing could be true. This faith carries us to a higher level of consciousness. In this connection Srila Prabhupada explained in a lecture that he gave on 11 October 1974 in Mayapur:

"These examples are given in the sastra (scripture). They are not exaggeration but actual fact. And we have to take it in good faith. Then we'll make advance in spiritual life. Otherwise, if we think these things are exaggeration in the sastras or by the devotees, that is aparadha, offense."

By putting your complete faith in the scriptures and the spiritual master you will be able to personally realize God, and all the truths of the Vedic wisdom will become fully revealed to you.

Ten years ago I was suffering greatly due to the loss of my daughter. I was searching for why I was suffering. I was often in conflict with my family members. I couldn't understand why people say or do things which made no sense to me. There was nobody who I could trust to take shelter for my problems and sufferings. I was in search of real truth.

One day I was surfing on the internet for that Real Truth, and I found a free online course called the “Ultimate Self Realization.” I became very excited and I immediately signed up for the e-course.

After I started receiving daily ‘Thoughts for the day’ and weekly lessons, I became very eager to read and understand The Bhagavad-gita and to answer the question in each weekly lesson. It was the most auspicious thing in which I have ever participated. I started asking Sankarshan das Adhikari many questions and he would kindly take the time to answer them personally. I would get so excited to receive an email from him and to read the answers to all my queries and doubts. Slowly I developed faith in him and realized that here is the person that I could trust him and devote my life to him. I learned so many things from this course. I learned what is the purpose of this valuable human life, and what is my relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna.

I am so fortunate that Lord Sri Krishna directed me to Sankarshan das Adhikari. He is my spiritual master and my life is dedicated to serve him. I highly recommend everyone to sign up for this free e-course of "Ultimate self-Realization". There is nothing to lose but all gain. You will be free from all your anxieties and sufferings. We are all suffering and rotting in this material world due to ignorance. He will guide you in every step of your life and take you back home back to Godhead.

However, he said that he does want to come to temple whenever I visit it. Do you want me to invite him to the temple or not?

Waiting for your reply,
Hari bol,

Answer: If He Keeps Coming, He Will Embrace Our Principles

Yes, let him come to the temple as often as possible. In this way he will get a taste for Krishna consciousness and eventually automatically become enthusiastic to follow the regulated principles of bhakti yoga.

In this connection Rupa Goswami states:

yena tena prakarena manah krsna nivesayet
sarve vidhi-nisedha syur etayor eva kinkarah

"Somehow or other become Krishna conscious; the rules and regulations will automatically come later on."

Pangs of Separation While Leaving Lithuania

Today we are departing from Lithuania. The loving exchanges we have with so many devotees here are so upliftingly wonderful that it is always with pangs of separation we head out from this country, which is so much blessed with so many wonderful devotees. This reminds me of a conversation between Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Ramananda Raya which is recorded in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya Lila, Chapter 8, Text 248 as follows:

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked, "Of all kinds of distress, what is the most painful?"

Sri Ramananda Raya replied, "Apart from separation from the devotee of Krishna, I know of no unbearable unhappiness."

This is one of the austerities of being a traveling preacher. There are too many mournful goodbyes. But the consolation is that on the spiritual platform we are packed up eternally together in the service of Lord Krishna, and we will all be together eternally in that wondrous spiritual sky.

Sacipriya Devi Dasi

I was very much fond of the internet. But I did not know how to use it for Krishna consciousness. One fine day when I was checking my Facebook account. Surprisingly I saw Srila Gurudeva's photo in teachers column.

Immediately I said to my husband here is "His Grace Harikatha prabhu's spiritual master."

My husband asked me, "How did you get it in your account? Did you do something?"

I replied "No."

Then how Srila Gurudeva appeared in the teacher's column as my teacher was the big question mark. After many months I understood how Srila Gurudeva mercifully appeared first in my Facebook account and then into my heart. Srila Gurudeva mercifully implanted pure Krishna bhakti seed in me on 7th September 2014. Though I don't have any qualification. It is only His Grace causeless mercy upon me the most fallen soul. Srila Gurudev mercifully kills all my doubts instantly through Thought For the Day even before I ask questions.

Every day I am eagerly waiting for the new Thought especially, "Answers by Citing the Vedic Version." On Friday 21st November 2014, Thought For the Day " Krishna will Never let you Down" especially touched my heart. In that Gurudeva explained that Krishna is the one and only person you can trust and if you put your full faith in Krishna, you will never ever be bewildered or unhappy in any situation.

I am very thankful to Srila Gurudeva for giving his association daily through "Thought For the Day" and enlightening us with pure Krishna bhakti and giving us true spiritual knowledge throughout the world.

I request all the people on the earth to subscribe this e-course and make your life successful as thousands are doing it.

Question: Qualties of the Different Incarnations?

Respected master,

Thank you for your earlier reply. I have another few questions

1)I wish to know how many transcendental qualities does Lord Krishna, Rama, Vishnu, Shiva, Brahman and the human beings have?

2) Is Lord Krishna parabrahma? If yes, then like Lord Brahma how can it have a cycle of birth and death? As per my knowledge, Lord Brahma has a life of 100 brahma years and Para-Brahma also has a life ( age I'm not aware). Please guide me specifically on this question in detail.

3)What is the order in which all the above mentioned incarnations are placed according to their powers (starting with Lord Krishna)?

Thanking you,

Answer: Only Krishna Possessess All Qualities

There are sixty-four specific qualities mentioned in the scriptures that are possessed by Krishna. Lord Narayana has only sixty of these qualities. Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma have fifty-five of these qualities. And the living entities in general possess fifty of these qualities in small quantity. You can order the above mentioned persons by what percentage of Krishna's qualities they possess.

Krishna is parabrahma, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He lives etenally as as youth. He does not take birth and die like Lord Brahma.

Conquer Your Tongue, Conquer the World

In world history many conquerors have come and gone: Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Hitler, etc. But their empires were very soon extinguished by the stringent laws of the material nature. Regarding such leaders Srila Prabhupada writes:

"A Hitler, a Mussolini, or any other leader of that materialistic persuasion may offer his followers the mental concoction of doing good together in violent or nonviolent programs, and by such acts of so-called benevolence the leader may get recognition from his followers for some time. But the followers for whom this kind of leader has endeavored to do good will never get any lasting benefit out of such temporarily beneficial work. A void will be felt with the progress of all such benevolent activities. In fact, the followers will be put into more and more distressed conditions by following the path chalked out by this kind of so-called leader. If a blind man pretends to help another blind man cross a road, then both the blind leader and the blind follower shall fall into the further darkness of some unseen ditch. Everyone who is devoid of transcendental knowledge is just like a blind man; such a blind man must first eradicate his blindness before he can attempt to lead others to light."

There is another kind of conqueror whose influence far exceeds the above mentioned conquerors. He is the greatest of all conquerors. He is that person who conquers over his tongue by only talking about Krishna and by taking only Krishna prasadam as his food.

Testimonial From S. Balaji

Being a severe atheist, once I got affected by black magic. During that time I had an indirect chance to interact with Goddess Sakthi and Lord Venkatesa Perumal (another form of Krishna). By their grace I came out of the black magic and the evil power was driven out. I started pondering over where from the evil power came, where is God, etc. and I was interested in reading the Bhagavad-gita, the Puranas etc. to know the information. Never ever I knew I have been tricked by Krishna and the inquisitive nature why, what and how is going to lead me towards one of the ISKCON gurus.

Time passed and small spiritual columns appearing in local newspapers and magazines and internet became my source of spiritual knowledge where I started learning about soul, demigods their origin, function, etc. Previously I have read those spiritual columns but they were “stories” for me at that time but after getting affected by black magic and interaction with the above mentioned gods they are “surely real”. But however my mind kept on disturbing me in variety of materialistic issues and sitting in an empty room I asked, "What is the solution for this disturbing mind?" In the very next day, once I asked the question, spiritual columns started appearing stating that you need a preceptor to control the mind. I once again inquired, "Who is the preceptor?" Within one week when I was searching in the internet about spirituality I came across and some force in me, forced me to register, which I did in the year 2004.

I received the first mail from and the first thought to pop up in my mind was, "Here is another bogus guru.” Because in India a number of gurus appeared to be genuine persons and sooner or later they will be caught in a scandal and their names will be flashed in newspapers. So the general notion is: “A guru means a fraud.” My first attempt was to prove that belongs to another bogus guru. So I started asking so many adamant questions in a challenging manner, but Gurudeva was very patient and answered it in a humble manner. As time passed on, as I started reading his mails, I understood one thing. Gurudeva doesn’t say anything for the sake of himself. He says everything for the sake of Krishna. This was the marked difference. A bogus guru seeks gains for himself. I started thinking about the sequence of all the events above: black magic, interaction with gods and some force compelling me to register in in year 2004. My question: "Who is the preceptor?" has been answered. So this Gurudeva is real and genuine. Gurudeva taught me everything. Today I know why I got affected by black magic, etc. and all my inquisitive questions has been answered.

Slowly I started following his instructions, started chanting, once in a while I started visiting ISKCON Chennai. Although I am not following the regulative principles strictly at present due to obstacles created by my family members, things are changing. I am slowly introducing my family members to Krishna consciousness and there is slow and steady positive turn in spirituality, towards Lord Krishna, in my family up to this moment. For the past few years I am introducing this course to as many as possible but I am not aware of how many have picked up the course.

Yours truly,

Question: How to Eradicate Depression?

I know you are too busy with Krishna consciousness, but I need your help. I have been in a great depression for the last two-and-a-half years. I am trying meditation and chanting mantras, but still it is continuing. I have been using anti-depressant medicines for one-and-a-half years with no result. Can I free myself from depression by chanting and meditating? Or do I need to use medicines? I have two children, and because of this I cannot engage nicely in family matters. This is putting my family into difficulty.

Also, I wish to work for the Krishna Consciousness Movement. What are the activities I can do to serve this glorious movement?

Because of depression my body is heating always. I am suffering from restlessness, lack of sleep, memory loss, and in so many other ways. Please help help help!

Answer: Take Depression As Your Friend

The trick is that instead of seeing depression as your enemy, you should see it as your friend. Most people are bewildered by the glitter of the material energy into thinking that they are actually happy in this world of death. You have been blessed to see beyond this illusion and realize that you are suffering. This means that you are more fortunate than the other seven billion human beings who reside on this planet. With gratitude in your heart you should regularly call out to Krishna by uttering the Hare Krishna mahamantra. By developing this attitude of gratitude all of your depression will melt away and you will become one of the happiest people in the entire universe. This the real medicine for depression. The other so-called depression medicines only make your depression worse. However, if you currently are medicated on anti-depressants you will need to go off of them gradually and carefully under the guidance of an expert physician.

Regarding your wonderful desire to serve our mission, please go to your nearest ISKCON temple and volunteer your services to the devotees there for whatever way you can best be of service to them.

Heart-Melting Loving Exchanges

In this material world everyone is starved for love because there is no real love here. So much bitterness is tasted in the attempt to experience love that people sometimes denounce love as something bad. If you want to know what is real love, you need to put Krishna in the center of all your relationships. If you do so, you will taste the sweetest nectar in your relationships, sometimes so sweet that your heart will melt and you will cry tears of joy.

Question: How Do I Get the Desire to Be Initiated?

How do I get the sincere desire to be initiated by the spiritual master? I understand the necessity of being initiated by a bona fide spiritual master, but I don't have a sincere desire to be initiated. What is wrong with me?

Answer: Don't Think the Cure is Worse than the Disease

If someone is sick, he knows that he needs to take medicine. But because the medicine is bitter sometimes he foolishly thinks that the cure is worse than the disease and that it is thus better to stay sick rather than to take the medicine. This of course is utter foolishness. It is better to undergo a little temporary bitterness and become completely recovered from the disease than to continue perpetually in a diseased condition. If the sick person remains in his foolishness, not using his intelligence, he will need to be scolded by a doctor or a friend to bring him to his senses so he can take the medicine and get well.

Dear All,

I first came into contact with His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari in 2005 and what struck me was his genuineness in presenting the teachings of Krishna Consciousness exactly as taught by ISKCON Founder-Acharya Srila Prabhupada. He very patiently answered many questions that were troubling me. He also gave expert guidance to me in my difficult life situations.

He has kindly accepted me as his disciple in late 2009 despite my many disqualifications. This great gesture has helped me to firm up my sadhana and be fixed in Krishna Consciousness, though I have a long way to go.

For any sincere spiritual seeker needing direct guidance from an expert spiritual master, I highly recommend them to enroll in the e-course. The daily nectar that he sends as 'Thought for the Day' is like a daily dose of vitamins required for our spiritual body. Please try it and you will have nothing to lose except for your anxiety and worry and the gain will be a life full of bliss and no regrets.

Problem: Politicians Will Not Agree to Close Slaughterhouses

Your suggestion to the politicians to stop slaughterhouses is a very practical approach to ending violence. However, unfortunately no politician will listen, as long as the desire to consume animal flesh is there in humans and there is a big business involved in it.

Solution: Deprive the Slaughterhouses of their Customers

You have correctly analyzed the problem. As long as the people continue to consume animal flesh the problem will continue. The meat industry will continue being financially powerful and capable of buying out the politicians. Therefore we have to aggressively proceed in a grass roots fashion convincing one individual after another individual to give up meat eating by giving them the higher taste of Krishna prasadam. As more and more people shun violence food, the campaign will gain more and more momentum until one day the slaughterhouses will go broke because nobody will buy their disgusting, sinful products any more.

I Was So Deluded Then, But I'm Wiser Than That Now

Befooled by foolish teachers that my body is my self
Dreaming I'm the center of the universe
I neglected everyone else.
My anguish knew no boundaries
Each moment painfully endowed.
Yes, I was so deluded then
But I'm wiser than that now.

Each day an endless dirge, funereal misery
Faking life like circus clown
Hiding tears so none could see
Pondering Hamlet's doomful quest
Screaming for meaning somehow.
Yes, I was so deluded then
But I'm wiser than that now.

Misguided grossly blinded hog-tied I was hurled
Into poisonous pernicious jaws of a brutalizing world.
They entangled me in slavery cruel and forced me to kowtow.
Yes, I was so deluded then
But I'm wiser than that now.

Wasting my time twisting my mind with abstract poetry
To smash down the wall that separates us all from true reality.
Denyingly I tried to merge with God my existence to disallow.
Yes, I was so deluded then
But I'm wiser than that now.

By causeless grace I met a sage whose name is Prabhupada
He blessed me with enlightened eyes to break through the facade.
Showered with compassion that I must gift the world somehow.

I began reading Guru Maharaja's Thought for the Day about six years ago. While in complete ignorance I slowly started to understand more about myself, the material and spiritual worlds, through these mails. When in doubt, I sent a question through to His Grace, and within a short period, He most graciously replied, smashing through ignorance and bringing light from the torchlight of divine knowledge. Now it is a daily routine to read these Thoughts for the Day. I gain hope and inspiration from them, and I think there's a personal message in there for all readers. It almost always corresponds to some aspect of my life at that current time.

I urge one and all to sign up, and an amazing and divine experience shall await you each day. Guru Maharaja's compassion and mercy knows no bounds. Privileged are we to be a part of it.

Please accept my humble expression of gratitude.

Question: How to Stop Finding Fault With Devotees?

I have been noticing that I have this tendency to find faults in others. I want to get rid of it but I don't know how, considering the fact that my chanting is mostly mechanical. With a train of thought I find some fault in someone and then instantly regret doing that and go through a long feeling of remorse and guilt. Sometimes, to my horror, I even end up finding faults in pure devotees. I make sure to apologize to them or their deity form (if they are not in this material universe) immediately, but I am very scared because offending devotees causes all devotional activities to be crushed. The worst part is that even though I apologize and counsel myself, I am not able to overcome this tendency of mine and I repeat the same mistake again.

I don't know how I can purify myself so that I can get rid of my fault finding tendency.

Please guide me.

Answer: Follow the Advice of Guru, Sadhus, and Scripture

If we follow the follow the guidance of the spiritual master, the scriptures, and the saintly teachers, all of our life's problems will be solved. Here's what scripture (the Nrsimha Purana) says about fault-finding:

bhagavati ca harav ananya-ceta
bhrsa-malino‘pi virajate manusyah
na hi sasa-kalusa-cchavih kadacit
timira-paro bhavatam upaiti candrah

“Just as the moon appears to have shadows and dark patches, but its glow is not shrouded because of them; similarly, devotees who possess single-minded devotion to the Supreme Lord in spite of having faults and blemishes—even those who have committed most abominable acts—keep on radiating devotion because of their love for the Lord."

Studying the example of the great Vaisnava acarya, Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami, we discover that he never cared to hear blasphemy of a Vaisnava. Even when there were points to be criticized, he used to say that since all the Vaisnavas were engaged in the service of the Lord, he did not mind their faults.

Regarding fault-finding, here's what we read in a letter that Srila Prabhupada wrote to his disciple, Atreya Rishi Das on 4 February 1972:

"People should not expect that even in the Krishna Consciousness Society there will be Utopia. Because devotees are persons, therefore there will always be some lacking -- but the difference is that their lacking, because they have given up everything to serve Krishna -- money, jobs, reputation, wealth, big educations, everything -- their lackings have become transcendental because, despite everything they may do, their topmost intention is to serve Krishna. 'One who is engaged in devotional service, despite the most abominable action, is to be considered saintly because he is rightly situated.' The devotees of Krishna are the most exalted persons on this planet, better than kings, all of them, so we should always remember that and, like the bumblebee, always look for the nectar or the best qualities of a person."

Srila Prabhupada also explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Third Canto, Chapter 16, Text 25:

"In general, when dealing with devotees, we should not try to find faults. In Bhagavad-gita also it is confirmed that the devotee who faithfully serves the Supreme Lord, even if found to commit a gross mistake, should be considered a sadhu, or saintly person. Due to former habits he may commit some wrong, but because he is engaged in the service of the Lord, that wrong should not be taken very seriously."

So you need to stop listening to your rascal mind and from now on only take the teachings of the spiritual master, the scriptures, and the sages as your guiding light. This and only this will bring you out of the darkness of ignorance and bring you fully into the happy enlightened life of pure Krishna consciousness. Otherwise if you continue fault finding, you will remain entangled forever in the grossly miserable cycle of repeated birth and death.

My focus in bhakti-yoga has always been Krishna-Katha (words of Krishna), especially reading, hearing and chanting mahamantra; since I’m not able to have personal contact with Krishna devotees or going to a temple to worship Krishna’s deities.

I’m enrolled in the Ultimate Self Realization Course since January 2010. This course gave me the opportunity to have the association with a great devotee of Krishna, Gurudeva Sankarshan Das Adhikari. Thanks to his guidance, compassion and kindness he taught me that by reading daily “Thought for the Day” I will be doing a form of devotional service by reading it, which is Krishna-Katha. I thought that will be the best way to spiritually advance in my material life, developing love for Krishna only for reading and thanks to technology.

Even though I cannot practice the regulations of bhakti-yoga, I’m attached to Krishna consciousness and supporting the propagation of it and the great mission of Gurudeva, hoping someday this humble service will develop in me love for Krishna as explained in Bhagavad-gita 12:10 and hoping as well, more souls in need of blissful knowledge can join this wonderful e-course.

Question: If I Commit Suicide, What Will Happen to Me?

I need your help. I chant the holy names of the Lord. But because my health is very bad the thoughts of suicide always come to my mind. If I give up my life, what will happen to me? It's hard for me to survive.

Answer: You'll Suffer Much More as a Ghost

You must not commit suicide because if you do so, you will become a ghost and suffer hundreds of times more than you are now. To come out of your depression all you have to do is make an adjustment of the way you perceive reality. Instead of seeing your health difficulties as a stumbling block for your happiness, see them instead as stepping stones to help you achieve the platform of unlimited transcendental happiness. Instead of being bewildered by them you should appreciate them as solid reminders that you are not your body, that you are instead an eternal spiritual being qualitatively one with the Lord. If you will increase the quantity and the intensity of your chanting, it will become easier for you to see all of your suffering in a positive way. Instead of becoming depressed, you will find wonderful peace and happiness within your heart.

We Must Now Close the Slaughterhouses

On 1 May 2015 here in Kaliningrad, Russia I was giving a lecture to a large hall full of locals. During the question and answer session a woman in the back of the hall stood up and asked what we think about violence. I explained to her how the violence on this planet is the karmic reaction for the slaughterhouses, and that the slaughterhouses therefore must now all be closed. The audience immediately applauded in appreciation of this point.

The ignorant masses who foolishly eat slaughterhouse food are responsible due to the law of karma for the gradual transformation of this planet into a slaughterhouse for human beings also. It is because of them that over 3,000 innocent animals are slaughtered at every second on this planet. This is why we have so many murders, wars, and untimely deaths on this planet.

Therefore I am advising the world's leaders that if you want to stop the violence on this planet, you must stop committing violence against the innocent animals. As long as you continue to maintain these heinous slaughterhouses you will find that this entire planet will gradually become more and more a slaughterhouse of human beings.

I am writing this email to inform you that I have been in touch with ISKCON and trying to follow the four regulative principles for more than one year. But I am having difficulty. Even though the devotee of Lord Krishna is living in this most miserable material world and is therefore also subject to the threefold miseries of material existence, because he is totally absorbed in his mission of freeing the people of this material world from their misery he does not have time to lament over his own personal miseries such as old age, disease and death. In other words, because he is totally absorbed in his mission of making everyone happy he does not have even one second available to wallow in his own miseries. Therefore, because of his high level of compassion serving the best interest of all living beings, the three types of material miseries cannot touch him. A near death accident with injuries four years back further bewildered me. Searching for the answers, by Lord Krishna's mercy I came in touch with the “Ultimate Self Realization Course” and from then there is no looking back. This was the greatest blessing and most fortunate decision of my life.

Living a depressed life for so many years, I could hardly relate with society. What to say about social dealings, I used to feel nervous even to say hello on phone in office in front of other colleagues. But now within a short span of coming in contact with this enlivening and enlightening course of His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari ji who by his mercy is my spiritual master now, my depression has paved way to compassion for others and now I am giving Bhagavad-gita lectures in the local ISKCON temple and running a weekly Krishna consciousness program in my house. What I could not had even thought of doing even after 30 years, by mercy of Guru and Gauranga, I am doing in three years and devotees around me too are surprised, that too having a full time job, family and kids to look after.

It is rightly being said,

mukam karoti vacalam
pangum langhayate girim
yat-krpa tam aham vande
sri-gurum dina-taranam

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto my spiritual master, the deliverer of the fallen souls. His mercy turns the dumb into eloquent speakers and enables the lame to cross mountains."

I would definitely recommend everyone to taste the daily nectar of “The Ultimate Self Realization Course”, and kindly tell others to subscribe too and lets make everyone's journey of life successful.

Hare Krishna!
Sincerely yours,

Haladhar Das

Question: Worship Krishna in One or Many Rasas?

I had a question about rasa. I heard that devotees could serve Lord Krishna in any of the five rasas - in neutrality, as a servant, as a friend, as a parent, or as a lover. Should a devotee worship the Lord in only one rasa or more than one rasa is ok?

Your eternal servant

Answer: Worship Your Spiritual Master

Worshipping Krishna in a particular rasa is only for liberated souls who have attained the perfectional stage of pure devotional to Krishna. Therefore at the present moment in your neophyte stage, you have no access to such exalted sort of relationships with Krishna. Lord Caitanya taught us to consider ourselves simply the servant of the servant of the servant of Krishna. So at your stage, your rasa is simply to be the completely sold out servant of your spiritual master. It is only by total, complete surrender to your spiritual master and only by his causeless mercy upon you that you will one day fully realize and be fully re-established in your original rasa or relationship with Krishna. And even when you realize your original eternal rasa or relationship with Krishna you will still remain the eternal servant of your spiritual master, always worshipping him as your eternal link with Krishna. So focus your energies on you relationship with your spiritual master. In this way you will be able to someday realize what is your svarupa, your personal rasa or relationship with Krishna.

As a daily dose of insulin is required for a diabetic patient, similarly the Ultimate Self Realization Course gives a daily dose of inspiration for the materially suffering souls to progress in the awakening of their dormant Krishna consciousness.

The answering of questions by Gurudeva removes the hurdles one has in his/her mind for their spiritual progress. The daily "Thought for the Day" shows us in a way which even a materialistically minded person can understand the path of how a surrendered soul to Krishna moves about in this material world with full dedication and vigor.

The Ultimate Self Realization Course has been a tool to fulfill Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. This course is instrumental to help the soul to reach its original destination i.e. back to home, back to Godhead.

Every day I wait for Thought for the Day to appear in my email, as it gives a daily dose of spiritual energy to pursue this wonderful path of Krishna consciousness.

Question: Difference Between Ego and False Ego?

I wanted to know if there's any difference between ego and false ego? One of my friends claims that ego and false ego are different, and if we don't have ego we are like non living entities. Is this true? He's asking for reference from Prabhupada's books as to where it is stated that ego and false ego are same.

Your humble servant,

Answer: False Ego Means There Must Also Be Real Ego

Your friend is right. If ego itself was false, we would not need to say “false ego.” The term false ego tells us that there must also be something which is the true ego or the real ego. The conclusion is that ego means identity. Real ego is that I am a spiritual being, who is the eternal servant of Krishna, the origin and center of all existence. And false ego is when I think that I am this body and that I am the center of all existence.

My Disciple, Sevananda Das, Survives Nepal Earthquake

After the devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake ravaged Nepal on 25 April 2015, I was very much concerned about the well-being of my Nepali disciple, Sevananda Das, and his family. I tried emailing him with no response. I called the ISKCON temple in Kathmandu, Nepal and was not able to communicate properly with the devotee who answered to the phone due to his not knowing English well. So I was greatly concerned that my beloved disciple and family were among the thousands of people killed in Nepal. But then on the morning of 29 April 2015 I was greatly relieved to receive the following email message:

My Dearest Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

My dearest Gurudeva, due to your mercy and blessings, Krishna has protected my body and the whole family unit from the earthquake. In fact, He has shown great mercy upon this insignificant soul. Please let me share with you briefly some details about my rendezvous with death personified.

At that crucial moment, I was beside my 1.5 years old son who was sleeping in our room on the second floor of our house. As soon as the building started shaking and I realized that it was an earthquake, I grabbed my toddler and pressing him against my bosom tried to run out of the room with the view to escape the building, but hardly had I reached the doorway of our room and all hell was let loose. I have experienced earthquakes before, but never had I experienced anything close to this one. By that time the ceiling, the walls, and the floor were shaking so vigorously that it was difficult to even keep standing let alone running or escaping. So, I stood there holding onto the wall expecting the ceiling and the walls to collapse on top of us at any moment.

At that crucial moment, Srila Gurudeva, the most divine thing happened - The Holy Names appeared within my mouth and my tongue started chanting: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

Oh, what mercy! What more could have I asked from Krishna than that? Even death would have been the most fortunate thing.

My dearest Gurudeva, before that moment, I have always had a doubt whether or not I will be able to remember Krishna at the final moment before leaving this body. But, now, after this incidence, my hope that I will be able to remember Krishna at my final moment has strengthened many fold. Therefore, even though the earthquake has wrought great havoc and misfortune to millions, personally, I am deriving great joy out of it for that very particular reason.

So, thank you, my dear Gurudeva, my dear savior, for your causeless mercy. It is only due to your benediction - the fact that I am related to you and am under your shelter and that you take kindly of me - that the Holy Names choose to manifest upon my tongue at the most crucial moment.

There is nothing that I can say which will correctly quantify my degree of indebtedness to you, but I just want you to know that I am eternally indebted to you.

A servant of your servants,
Sevananda Das

We are very thankful to Krishna that the ISKCON temple was not destroyed by the earthquake and that Sevananda Das and his family as well as their home are okay. (There are half million people in Nepal whose homes have been destroyed.)

I appreciate Thoughts For the Day of His Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari because they help me to cope with troubles that I face in my life. Everyday Thoughts remind me that this world with its ups and downs is only temporary and that I have to base my happiness on eternal antimaterial substance.

These everyday e-mails of my beloved spiritual master give me inspiration and enthusiasm to continue and to go deeper into my practice of bhakti yoga, i.e. to rise early in the morning, to chant Hare Krishna more attentively, to serve devotees with love etc., because this everyday Thoughts are filled with the taste of spiritual bliss of their author. And this taste is spreading through e-mails, like bhakti-virus, virus of ecstatic devotional service to the Lord.

I find it very helpful, that there is a question and answer section also. It is amazing that everyone can write to the spiritual master and ask any question that bothers him! In this part I found a lot of answers for my questions also, what helped me to get rid of doubts and confusions and to understand philosophy of Krishna consciousness better.

Question: How to Always Feel Happy?

What can I do to feel always happy without getting bored?

Answer: Only Look for Love in Krishna

The way to always feel happy and never feel bored is to give all of your love to Krishna. When you do that Krishna will personally shower you within and without with unlimited oceans of mercy to make sure that you are always feeling happy. In other words, if you will take good care of Krishna by always remembering, glorifying, and serving Him, He will personally take good care of you better than any other lover anywhere throughout all the three worlds. Therefore you should not look for love anywhere in this material world. If you do so, you will only be terribly frustrated. You should instead only look for love in Krishna. You will be swimming in an ocean of unlimited spiritual bliss.
