How You Can Help

Save the World

At the present moment our course has over 16,000 subscribers. Although this may seem like a lot, this is a mere pittance compared to the full outreach potential of the Internet. Therefore our desire is to expand our subscriber base more and more to reach a much larger portion of the over 3 billion people (more than 40% of the world’s population) who are currently using the Internet. If we can at least expand up to 1 billion subscribers, we are confident that this will have a significant impact on the entire global civilization.

So please send us the names and email addresses of anyone you think might be willing to give this course a try, and we will invite them on your behalf to try it.

Unflinching Faith in the Spiritual Master

In reference to the bona fide spiritual master who is purely teaching us what he has heard from his spiritual master without any adulteration, addition, or subtraction, it is clearly stated in the Svetasvatara Upanisad (6:23):

yasya deve para bhaktir
yatha deve tatha gurau
tasyaite kathita hy arthah
prakasante mahatmanah

"Only unto those great souls who have absolute, unflinching faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed."

Foolish mental speculators and envious so-called devotees say that we should not have such strong faith in the spiritual master. But when they say that we ask them, "Why then should we have faith in your words?" In other words, if we accept the truth that it is philosophically incorrect to trust our teacher, then logically we must also conclude that we cannot trust the person who teaches us not to trust our teacher. He is also giving us a teaching. If teachers cannot be trusted, we also must not trust the so-called teacher who tells us not to trust our teacher. The conclusion is that we should accept as our teacher he who is purely presenting the teachings of Krishna which are coming down to us through the system of disciplic succession, and we should not hear from those who concoct a message which deviates from the teachings of the previous acaryas.

If the disciple can clearly understand this, he will be protected from being poisoned by those who seek to break his faith in his spiritual master.

Question: Advise Me. I'm Depressed.

Hare Krishna Hare Rama

I am chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra with beads, yet I am not able to come over my depression. I have three children all well settled. I am aged 78. Kindly advise me.

Answer: Chant at Least 64 Rounds of Japa Daily

If you are depressed, you need to increase your chanting. The more you increase your chanting, the more your depression will go away. Although our minimum is to chant at least 16 rounds a day, since you are retired and your children are all settled you should chant at least 64 rounds per day. In this way by filling your entire day with chanting Mr. Depression will go running away from your house finding no place where he can do his rascal business.

Give Up Your Demoniac Mentality

In this miserable material world we all have demoniac mentality. That's why we're stuck here repeatedly going through the cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease. Demoniac mentality means selfish mentality, considering ourselves to be the center of the universe. This stupid self-centeredness has done nothing but make us miserable for thousands and millions of lifetimes. So it's time to wise up and cast away this asinine demoniac mentality. If you will kick it out once and for all from your heart and not ever let it back in, you will be doing yourself the greatest of all favors. If you will instead always remember that you are not the center of the universe, that you are instead the eternal servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, you will regain your original position of unlimited spiritual bliss that you have hankered for millions and billions of lifetimes.

Curbing Down the Voracious Senses

Of all the senses the tongue is the most voracious and uncontrollable. Therefore anyone who can fully conquer his tongue by only taking Krishna prasadam and by only talking about Krishna becomes a goswami, a master of his senses. Such a person can bestow the highest benefit upon all living beings by giving them Krishna consciousness. If we are so fortunate to meet such a person, we should take full advantage of his association by carefully following his instructions and thus becoming solidly established in Krishna consciousness, the ultimate perfection of consciousness.

How do You manage to be such a miraculous guru?

Your eternal servant,

The miracle is that His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada accepted such an unqualified person as me as his disciple. If there is anything miraculous about anything I have done, it has only happened due to his mercy. So I cannot take any credit. He gets all the credit. If I can claim any credit at all, it is simply that I have faithfully followed his instructions for the last 44 years since I accepted him as my spiritual master.

My Life's Mission

In this hellish material world it is indeed very rare to come into contact with a pure devotee of Krishna. Opportunities like this don't come along very often. I am most fortunate to have met such a pure devotee and even more fortunate to have been accepted by him as his disciple. I am speaking of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the jagad-guru or spiritual master of the entire universe. Srila Prabhupada is blessing our ever-increasingly troubled world with the true formula for world peace. His formula, taken from the ancient wisdom of India, specifically the Bhagavad-gita, defines how we can turn this entire planet into a wonderful, peaceful, happy paradise. This peace formula should become universally accepted and followed by all the world's leaders. When that wonderful day comes it will be the dawning of a new era of unparalleled peace and prosperity on our despondent planet earth, the like of which has not been manifested for thousands of years. May that day come as soon as possible. This is my life's mission.

Take your desires to achieve and transfer them all to Krishna consciousness. Krishna’s devotee is more ambitious than any materialist. He wants to bring about the greatest paradigm shift in the history. He wants to respiritualize the whole world.

People are suffering like anything without Krishna consciousness. They are futilely trying to squeeze whatever pleasure they can out of their temporary material senses with the end result of being demoted in their next lives to the animal kingdom. We are living in epidemic area, and we have the medicine to save all the dying people. Therefore we must fully dedicate our lives for distributing the medicine of Lord Krishna's unlimitedly nectarean holy name to bring them back to life.

No More Depression

There is no reason to be depressed ever again. All you have to do is awaken your dormant, all-blissful original state of consciousness, which is known as Krishna consciousness. It has been sleeping within your heart for the thousands and millions of lifetimes of your sojourn within this material existence. Simply by associating with someone who has awakened their Krishna consciousness you can get yours awakened too. So find someone who is Krishna conscious and ask them what to do. We can easily solve all of the world's problems because actually there is only problem in the world, a lack of Krishna consciousness. All of the other problems are simply derivatives of this one problem. Unfortunately because this simple fact is not understood or accepted by the world's leaders the world has been plunged into ever-increasing chaos and devastation. Therefore we hanker for that day when ISKCON's leaders will be accepted and honored by all the world's leaders as the leading spiritual authorities on this planet. We Can Accept or Reject Anything

In this human form of life there is only one necessity, and that is to awaken our dormant Krishna consciousness. But for Krishna's service we can accept anything, even the whole world, if Krishna wants to give it to us to engage in His service. And we can also reject anything, if Krishna wants us to reject it. In this way, the devotee of Krishna is totally detached from material sense gratification and is totally attached to Krishna.

Answer: To Serve Without Any Thought of Return

Love means to serve without any thought about getting something in exchange. In other words the taste derived from the service is the payment for doing the service. In our present contaminated state we do not know what is real love. But by continuing to engage in service under the order of our spiritual master, gradually we will develop a taste for devotional service and we will come to know what is real love.

Plea for Help: I Do Not Feel That I Am Loved

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

What is real love and relationship? My father used to say that if you do not love yourself then even God will not love you. Is it true? Is it important?

Can I love someone if I do not love myself? If I feel love for someone, how to express that love? Maybe if I love someone then I usually want to be loved myself by that person.

It seems important to feel some kind of love from Krishna's devotees. If I do not get any love, it is very difficult for me to love Krishna. I went to the temple and did not stay to take prasadam food because of not feeling loved. God, I am so confused! Please help.

Answer: Knock and the Door Will Open

If you truly love yourself, you will surrender fully to Krishna because that is the only way that you can have genuine happiness. Real love for someone else means to connect them with Krishna because that is the only way that they can have genuine happiness also. God's love for you is unconditional. He always loves you unlimitedly no matter what. Krishna's devotees also love you, more than you can understand. In order to feel that love you must first give your love to them. If you want the door of love to open, it is you who must first knock. If you are standing outside someone's door waiting for them to let you in, you must first knock on the door. Don't expect someone to open the door to let you in if you do not knock or ring the door bell.

Radhastami--the Appearance Day of Srimati Radharani

Today, Monday 21 September, here in Bulgaria, we are blessed with the most auspicious holy day, the appearance day of Srimati Radharani. Radharani is famous for being more merciful than even Krishna Himself. If someone approaches Radharani and begs for Her mercy to become accepted by Krishna, She will tell Her beloved Krishna to take notice of this devotee who is a better devotee than Her. When Krishna gets this recommendation from Radharani that here is a devotee who is better than Radharani, He immediately takes note and bestows His causeless mercy upon this devotee who is recognized by His beloved Srimati Radharani.

So if you want Krishna's mercy, first beg for Radharani's mercy. That is why in the Hare Krishna mahamantra we first chant "Hare," which addresses Radharani, before we call out to Krishna.

Complaint: Singing Won't Solve the World's Problems

On 'The Peace Formula' video page found at: we got the following complaint:

"I am afraid singing wont help to get us out of this mess created by the West."

Indrajit Banerjee

Answer: Krishna's Peace Formula Will Save the World

Here was our reply:

It is not that my singing will bring world peace. I am singing the peace formula that Krishna is singing in the Bhagavad-gita, Chapter Five, Text 29. Krishna's singing is potent for bringing peace to the whole world because He is Jagannatha, the Lord of the entire universe. If Krishna's formula is accepted and implemented by the world's leaders, global peace and prosperity will be the immediate result. The difficulty is that they stubbornly refuse to heed Krishna's words.

By taking the materially strong technology of the spiritually weak West to broadcast the spiritually strong message of the materially weak East, we are following the logic of the lame man and blind man. On his own the blind man cannot accomplish anything; nor can the lame man accomplish anything either. But when the lame man with good vision sits on the shoulders of the blind man who has good legs, together they form a powerful team that can accomplish many things. So in this video I am making a humble attempt to combine the wisdom of the East with the technology of the West for the benefit of all living beings. I simply want to introduce Krishna's peace formula to the world's leaders. I pray that the day will come very soon when they will all hear and follow Krishna's teachings.

Ratha Yatra Bliss in Sofia

On Friday 18 September the people of Sofia, Bulgaria were blessed by the divine presence of a Ratha Yatra festival in their city. The huge throng of over two hundred devotees chanted and danced in ecstasy in the streets of Sofia causing surprise and joy in the hearts of hundreds and thousands of fortunate bystanders. I noticed that even one of our somber police escorts cracked a smile from being connected with the delightful festivities. Who could not help being swept away by the tidal wave of spiritual bliss which swept through downtown Sofia? I did notice one girl who was totally absorbed in smoking a cigarette, with glazed eyes like a zombie, who did not appear to be moved by the ecstatic festival. But most of the people were affected in a very positive and wonderful way by the merciful festival of Lord Jagannatha. Even our cigarette smoking girl was blessed and purified by the liberating sound of Krishna's holy name.

Entire World is Maddened by Sense Gratification

It's painful to see the human race so much maddened by material sense gratification. It has become totally entangled in the clutches of material senses. For example upon arriving in Bulgaria I noticed how it is considered very fashionable for women to wear high heeled shoes, even though it is most unhealthy practice that health professionals area always warning against. But being mad after sense gratification, health considerations are placed aside, replaced by the desire to be sexually appealing. What is good for one's health no longer matters. Overindulgence in material sense gratification is not only bad for one's physically health. It is even more detrimental for one's spiritual health because it obliges one to give up the human form of life and go down to the animal kingdom in one's next life.

Question: When Will the Whole World Become Delivered?

You mentioned in 'Thought for the Day' that the Krishna consciousness movement will spread all over the world. But when will it happen? And if every living entity will be delivered, then why should we try to preach the message of the Lord. And since we will also be delivered, then why should we also do the devotional service of the Lord?

I also have heard that if we do not use the human form of life in serving the Lord, then we will go to the animal society rotating in the 8,400,000 species of life. But you mentioned, "The Krishna consciousness movement will inundate the entire world and drown everyone, whether one be a gentleman, a rogue or even lame, invalid or blind." So how it is? Please enlighten me.

Your servant,

Answer: That Depends On Our Purity and Cooperation

When the whole world will become Krishna conscious depends on how purely we become fixed in Krishna consciousness and to what extent we, the members of the Krishna consciousness movement, work in full cooperation with each other to make it happen. Of course, the cooperation mood is a symptom of pure Krishna consciousness within the heart. If we remain tinged with the desire for material sense gratification and are hence not able to work together cooperatively, it will take many thousands of years before the global inundation of Krishna bhakti takes place. And if we become fully awakened in Krishna consciousness working together in perfect harmony with each other, the whole world can take to this Krishna consciousness movement during our present lifetimes.

Every living being will eventually go back to Godhead. But until then they are suffering like anything in the cycle of repeated birth and death. Therefore the devotee of the Lord, being an ocean of mercy, cannot tolerate to see them suffering so much and fully absorbs himself in giving Krishna consciousness to others. He also sees to his own deliverance as soon as possible rather than dragging on for thousands and millions of years in the cycle of birth and death.

How to Bring Balance Back to Nature

In California there is severe drought and forest fires. In Utah there was a heavy flood that killed sixteen people. Why are such things going on? By God's arrangement there is sufficient facility to provide everyone nicely with their necessities of life. But due to an imbalance in nature there are so many difficulties. Why there is an imbalance in nature, nobody knows. Nowadays global warming is blamed as being the cause of imbalance. However, those who are enlightened with knowledge of the inner workings of the universe understand that this imbalance is actually being caused by the increase of Godlessness on this planet along with its accompanying sinfulness. Stated simply, it is karma. If you disobey the laws of God, nature will slap you in the face. And this is exactly what is now happening. So if we want to solve the problems of the world, it's time for us to hear and learn from those who are enlightened with transcendental knowledge, because it is only such visionaries who can teach us how to perfectly harmonize with God and nature. This and only this can actually solve the problems of the ever-increasingly devastated human society

The pure devotee's nature is that he feels unlimited compassion for the suffering souls of this world and thus dedicates himself birth after birth for delivering them from their unending misery.

Question: If We Do Not Feel Krishna's Presence?

My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to you and Srimati Gurumataji.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I heard you saying in a lecture that we should feel the presence of Krishna everywhere and in everything. My question is: If we are not able to feel Krishna's presence naturally due to our conditioning, is it okay to feel it artificially/ forcefully?

Your servant,
Padmamalini Devi Dasi

Answer: Act Dutifully Understanding that He is Present

You cannot forcefully, artificially feel the presence of Krishna. So what you should do instead, if you cannot feel His presence, is understand philosophically that He is present and act dutifully in accordance with that reality. By acting in this way under the instructions of your spiritual master, in the course of time you will gradually and eventually come to the stage of feeling Krishna's presence everywhere.

Krishna's Devotee is an Ocean of Mercy

Because Krishna's devotee is an ocean of mercy he manifests sweet loving kindness towards all living beings. He is greatly pained to see the countless living beings captured within the clutches of birth, death, old age, and disease. Therefore he fully dedicates his life for delivering them from their suffering condition. For this purpose he pushes forward the Krishna consciousness movement to the full extent of his capabilities all over the world.

Question: How to Prove the Truth of Our Teachings?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Yesterday I was distributing books, and I met a scientist. I started to argue with him. So he spread some doubts in my mind, and this showed for me that I don't have any faith in the words of the acharyas (great saintly teachers) and sastras (scriptures). Here are some of doubts:

1) Why do we believe that our way is real? What does it give us?
2) Why do we believe that those personalities, who wrote our scriptures were saints?
3) How we can prove that all our scriptures were written not by some ordinary human beings but by God Himself or by His representative?
4) Why is the bhakti path not some speculation or sentimental way ? And how we can prove it to a scientist ?

Please clarify these doubts.

Your insignificant servant,

Answer: Truth Works

We know that our teachings are real because they work. Anyone who sincerely follows this pathway of Krishna bhakti will become fully awakened in pure love of God. They will be able to directly perceive God at every minute and will enter into His transcendental kingdom to regain their original position as one of His eternal associates.

What Makes a Guru Bona Fide?

If a guru’s only desire is to accumulate followers for name and fame, he is after a personality cult, and he is not a bona fide guru. The bona fide guru’s only desire is to save as many people as possible from the sufferings of this material world. Therefore he compassionately preaches all over the world for saving as many people as possible from the cycle of birth and death without any interest whatsoever in name and fame.

The scriptures order us that we must worship our spiritual master. Therefore it is our spiritual master’s duty to teach us how to worship him and to encourage us to worship him. Some critics argue that the spiritual master is not bona fide if he teaches his disciples to worship him. But nothing could be further from the truth. It is his duty to teach his disciples how to faithfully follow the instructions given in the scriptures.

Dear Srila Prabhupada,

All glories to you!

Thank you Srila Prabhupada for coming into this world for saving us. I am eternally indebted to you for all you have done for us suffering souls. Your greatest blessing to me will always remain of giving Srila Gurudeva as my spiritual master.

I had a very good fortune of being present at the ISKCON Austin ashram on the very auspicious day of Your appearance. While at the arati ceremony on Vyasapuja day, seeing Gurudeva and Gurumata engaged in such intense devotion and love towards serving you, I saw a spiritual family, with my Mother and Father serving our beloved Grandfather along with so many brothers and sisters. Please give blessings that I can join my spiritual master in serving You in the spiritual world just like we did yesterday with all fellow god-brothers and god-sisters, no matter how many births it needs to get there.

Please give me intelligence and enthusiasm to help serve my spiritual master's mission of opening new ISKCON Austin temple. I bow down repeatedly at your lotus feet. Please be merciful onto your devotee.

Entering the Dimension of Deathlessness

In this world everyone is harassed by death. It is an unavoidable horror that everyone must face. As it is said, "Death is as sure as death," it is therefore ordinarily completely unavoidable. However there is a way to escape death. One can do so by entering into the dimension of deathlessness. Through the process of Krishna consciousness you can learn and master the art of how to situate yourself beyond death even now at the present moment. This process is learned under the guidance of an expert spiritual master, who is already situated in the dimension beyond death, through the process known as initiation. When you take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master through this process your deathlessness begins from the very day of your initiation as long as you strictly follow your initiation vows.

Lord Sri Krishna empowered you to propagate Krishna consciousness all over the world. Before being introduced to Krishna consciousness and reading your books we followed other so called religious leaders and clergy men but no one could give us definitive answers about God or the purpose of existence. But you gave us the knowledge of the absolute truth as it is and yet explained it in such simple terms that even an unintelligent fool like myself was able to begin to comprehend God as He is.

Vyasa Puja Homage: Life Without Prabhupada

Dear Prabhupada, I sometimes wonder what my life would be without you.

I would be going round in cycle of birth and death by eating sin not prasadam.
This is something scientists would call a conundrum.

Without this spiritual food
All food is rude, crude, delude, and definitely not approved.

Without you, Prabhupada, what would I do?
Without you Prabhupada my life would be more excluded protruded from Krishna consciousness.

You explain everything with an example,
Which gives a fool like me knowledge most ample.

Like you would say, "We are like a drop of water, whereas Krishna is the ocean."
Your words in the form of your books are so effective, just like some powerful potion.
Without this wonderful example
Trying to understand Acintya Bheda Abheda Tattva, wouldn't be so simple.

Without you, Srila Prabhupada, I wouldn't have a home,
Where I learn to serve Krishna and my sins I would atone,
A temple home to call my own,
A place where every thing about Krishna is known.

Thank you, Srila Prabhupada

Prabhupada Taught Me the Real Formula for World Peace

On this most auspicious of all days, the divine appearance day of my most beloved spiritual master, HIs Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, I humbly bow down in the dust of His lotus feet and thank him for giving me the real formula for world peace. As a singer/songwriter/peace activist in the 60's I was desiring to promote world peace through my music. But since I had no idea what was the actual formula for peace, there was truly nothing I could do to be effective in bringing peace to the world. However due to the unlimited kindness of Lord Sri Krishna, I was blessed with the divine guidance and shelter of one of the greatest spiritual masters in the history of the universe, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada gives the real formula for peace as follows:

"If one wants peace of mind and tranquility in society, he must accept the fact that the real enjoyer is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord is the proprietor of everything all over the universe, and He is the supreme friend of all living entities as well. By understanding this, people can become happy and peaceful individually and collectively."--from Srila Prabhupada's purport to SB 4.24.66

If this peace formula becomes widely known and followed, there will be a new wonderful era of peace and prosperity on this planet. In a humble attempt to popularize this peace formula I have written a song called The Peace Formula. I am very happy to inform you all that the Apple Music ITunes Store has released this song for worldwide distribution on the most auspicious day of Janmastami.

You can hear a sample and/or download a copy of the song through this link:

After downloading if you give a five star rating, this will help us to popularize it.

Anything else you can do to popularize this song will help to spread Krishna's peace formula to a world that most desperately needs it.

Thank you,

Question: How Much Karma Does Surrender Liberate Me From?

If a devotee becomes 100% Krishna conscious, does he also become 100% karma free? Or does some portion of karma remain?

Golok Das

Answer: Surrender Obliterates All of Your Karma

To whatever extent a devotee becomes Krishna conscious, to that extent he is from karma. Therefore a devotee who is 100% Krishna conscious is also 100% free from his karma, the resultant reactions from his previous pious and sinful activities.

The Most Auspicious Janmastami

Sri Krishna Janmastami, the appearance day of Lord Sri Krishna, is the perfection of auspiciousness. According to Srila Rupa Gosvami auspiciousness means welfare activities for the greatest benefit for all the people of the world. Therefore Lord Sri Krishna has bestowed the topmost auspiciousness, the greatest of all good fortune, upon the fallen, conditioned souls of this world by His divine appearance here. With great joy in their hearts Krishna's devotees very devotedly celebrate this day by fasting until midnight and attending a midnight arati, after which they break their fast, to celebrate the Lord's midnight appearance in the prison of the demoniac King Kamsa some 5,000 years ago.

Question: Can You Prove that ISKCON is Not a Totalitarian Sect?

Can you prove that ISKCON is not totalitarian sect?

Answer: ISKCON Liberates Us from Mayadevi's Totalitarian Sect

The fools and rascals will always see ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness) as a totalitarian sect because Krishna demands that everyone should fully surrender to Him. But those who are enlightened with transcendental knowledge know better. They realize that ISKCON is not a totalitarian sect because when one becomes awakened in pure love of God, Krishna becomes completely under the control of His devotee. The real totalitarian sect is this material existence because the three modes of material completely enslave us here birth after birth. The conclusion is that even though ISKCON is liberating the imprisoned souls of this material world from Mayadevi's totalitarian sect, the poor brainwashed souls of this material world will think that ISKCON is a totalitarian sect.

No One is More Powerful Than Krishna's Pure Devotee

In world history there are so many powerful, influential people who have greatly impacted the world society. But there is no one more powerful and impactful than Krishna's pure devotee. In this connection Srila Prabhupada states in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 7, Text 83 as follows:

"A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles given by the spiritual master. When the holy name is properly served in this way, automatically the spiritual nature of the holy name spreads; in other words, the devotee becomes qualified in offenselessly chanting the holy name. When one is completely fit to chant the holy name in this way, he is eligible to make disciples all over the world, and he actually becomes jagad-guru. Then the entire world, under his influence, begins to chant the holy names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra."

Krishna's pure devotee is so powerful that he can deliver all of the residents of the entire universe back to home, back to Godhead. This is why he is called jagad-guru, the spiritual master of the universe.

Question: Can a Child Overindulge in Prasadam?

You have said that overindulging in prasadam makes it material. What about if a child overindulges in prasadam? Is it still material, or is it okay since the child is still growing?

Answer: A Child Can Eat As Much As He Likes

Here is how Srila Prabhupada answered this question asked by a young boy named Birabhadra on 21 February 1969 in Los Angeles:

Birabhadra: Swamiji? You said that if you eat too much you will pay. But how about the devotee? How about when they eat too much prasada?
Prabhupada: You want to eat more?
Birabhadra: I just want to know how.
Prabhupada: You think you are eating more? So you can eat more. Yes, you can eat more. Yes, it is medical advice, that there are two kinds of mistakes in eating. Over-eating and under-eating. So under-eating mistake for old man is very good. And over-eating mistake for boys, that is good. So you can overeat. I cannot.
Birabhadra: How about Tamal and Vishnujana? (laughter)
Prabhupada: He cannot. You can. You can eat as much as you like. Free pass. (laughter) Yes.

Why Am I Still a Hare Krishna After 44 Years?

Sometimes people are amazed that I could still be a Hare Krishna even after 44 years of practice because they think that Krishna consciousness is something whimsical or sentimental. But actually to remain in Krishna consciousness is not at all amazing because, as confirmed by Lord Caitanya, the constitutional nature of the living being is that he is the eternal servant of Krishna. In other words, being Krishna conscious is simply a matter of being who you are. It is not something artificially imposed upon the mind.

In conclusion, the real and most amazing thing is when someone does not take to Krishna consciousness.

Question: When Cruelty Free Milk is Not Available?

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Thank you for the wonderful and informative website. A friend has just made me aware of it and I have been relishing in it recently. A wonderful service! I noticed you have a questions section, which I feel is important, invaluable and rare that an elevated guru as yourself takes the time to answer the public's questions.

I have a question relating to cow protection:

I have heard that we should only use ingredients in our prasadam offerings that have come from sources where no exploitation or suffering of animals occurred. So the milk industry in Australia (where I live) is basically the brother of the meat industry. So by buying milk we are supporting the slaughter of cows. But sastra says that milk is very important to us. So to be vegan seems the best for protecting the cows or at least not fueling the meat industry, but milk is also important. What is the best course of action if getting ahimsa (non-violent) milk is not an option?

I hope this meets you in good health.

Your humble servant

Answer: Use a Thorn to Remove a Thorn

Srila Prabhupada explains in Light of the Bhagavat, "No brain can assimilate the subtle form of knowledge without fine brain tissues. For such important brain tissues we require a sufficient quantity of milk and milk preparations." Therefore in such circumstances where non-violent milk is not an option Srila Prabhupada authorizes us to use milk from regular commercial dairies. For example, in a letter to Makhanlal Das written by Srila Prabhupada on 14 July 1971, we read that Prabhupada was very pleased when the devotees were getting milk donated from a dairy, which was not a non-violent dairy:

"I am so glad to hear that, because the sales manager of Darigold dairy is sympathetic to our Krishna Consciousness movement, you are being supplied 20 gallons of fresh milk weekly and free of charge."

Since our goal is to eventually convert all of the dairies of the world into non-violent cow-protected dairies, we can, until we attain that goal, accept milk from regular dairies and use it in Krishna's service. This is the principle of using a thorn to remove a thorn. If one gets a thorn stuck in his skin but does not have tweezers available to remove it, he can use a second thorn to remove the first thorn. In a similar way by using the milk of dairies which are not non-violent in Krishna's service we will get sufficient brain substance for eventually converting all of such dairies into non-violent dairies.

Therefore when you don't have tweezers, use a thorn to remove the thorn. When you don't have ahimsa milk, uses non-ahimsa milk and endeavor to get ahimsa milk as soon as possible.

Question: Is Vaisnavism Paganism?

Can you prove that sanatana dharma, gaudiya-vaishnavism, is not paganism, false religion? In my opinion there is a lot of idol-worshiping in it.

Answer: How Can You Not Be What You Are?

Sanatana-dharma means eternal function, that which cannot be changed. For example the sanatana dharma of water is liquidity because liquidity cannot be changed from water. The santana dharma of fire is heat because heat cannot be changed from fire. Similarly, the eternal function of the living entity, his sanatana-dharma, cannot be changed. It is absolutely not possible to change it. So we have to find out what is that eternal function of the eternal living entity. Some philosophers argue that since we do not actually exist, sanatana dharma is false. But if we do not exist, who is making the argument that we do not exist?

If You Are Not Tasting Unlimited Bliss at Every Moment

If you are not tasting unlimited bliss at every moment, you are doing something wrong because to be constantly relishing unlimited nectar is your natural constitutional position. This is why you need to take to the remedial process of sadhana bhakti, devotional service executed according to regulative principles, such as chanting the prescribed number of rounds every day and avoiding sinful activities. Some misinformed people think that one can immediately take to raga bhakti, spontaneous love of God, in which there are no regulative principles. But such so-called love of God is imitation. It is not real. This is like a sick man who tries to eat a normal diet before he has recovered from his severe illness. Such eating will simply keep him in a diseased state and may even kill him.

Question: Which Guru Should I Meditate On?

Who are we supposed to think of during the Gurvastakam prayers, the eight prayers glorifying the spiritual master that we sing every morning at mangala arati, the first worship ceremony of the day? Are we to think about Srila Prabhupada, our spiritual master, or both?

Answer: Your Guru Connects You With All the Gurus

In this connection Srila Prabhupada explains, "Actually, you have only one spiritual master, who initiates you, just as you have only one father.” So meditating on your spiritual master means meditating on that spiritual master who has initiated you. When you mediate on him you are following the order of Srila Prabhupada. Therefore when you connect with your initiating guru by meditation you are also automatically connecting with Srila Prabhupada by following his instruction. And through connecting with Srila Prabhupada you are also automatically connecting with his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, and all the predecessor gurus in our disciplic succession all the way up to Lord Sri Krishna Himself, the original spiritual master.
