How You Can Help

Save the World

At the present moment our course has over 16,000 subscribers. Although this may seem like a lot, this is a mere pittance compared to the full outreach potential of the Internet. Therefore our desire is to expand our subscriber base more and more to reach a much larger portion of the over 3 billion people (more than 40% of the world’s population) who are currently using the Internet. If we can at least expand up to 1 billion subscribers, we are confident that this will have a significant impact on the entire global civilization.

So please send us the names and email addresses of anyone you think might be willing to give this course a try, and we will invite them on your behalf to try it.

Nothing More Ecstatic than Hare Krishna Kirtan

There is truly nothing more ecstatic than Hare Krishna kirtan because when one absorbs himself fully in such kirtan he is directly associating with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the source of all existence. In such a state of divine rapture one naturally reconnects with his eternal all-blissful, all-knowing nature, which although quantitatively different is qualitatively one with the Lord. When one is deeply immersed in kirtan, all anxiety, confusion, and delusion becomes conspicuous by their absence. That day when the world discovers the magic of Hare Krishna kirtan will the day when world peace dawns on this planet.

Question: Do You Have a Prayer for Invoking Mermaids?

There is an Indian religion that used to have a prayer for calling a mermaid (a half-woman, half-fish). By the prayer the mermaid will come to you and you will see her. So does Hare Krishna have such prayer for invoking mermaids?

Senior Tumba

Answer: Our Only Interest is Krishna, Not Mermaids

Our only interest is Krishna, not mermaids, because only Krishna can free us from this miserable material existence. If you are eager to associate with mermaids, you must stay in the cycle of birth and death.

Today's Thought:

Only Try to Save Ourselves?

Sometimes uninformed neophyte devotees object when we speak of the mission that Srila Prabhupada gave us to make the whole world Krishna consciousness. They are disturbed when say that Vaisnava culture should become predominant on this planet. They say that such an agenda is egotistical, that instead of trying to impose ourselves on others we should rather just focus on developing our own Krishna consciousness. So what is the proper understanding?

Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Antya Lila, Chapter3, Text 149:

"There are two classes of devotees. One is called gosthyanandi, and the other is called bhajananandi. A devotee who does not preach but always engages in devotional activities is called a bhajananandi, whereas a devotee who not only is expert in devotional service but who also preaches the cult of bhakti and defeats all kinds of agnostics is called a gosthyanandi."

Srila Prabhupada further elaborates on this in a lecture he gave in Mayapura, India on 6 April 1975:

"This is the business of acarya, to spread bhakti cult. Acaryam mam vijaniyat navamanyeta karhicit. It is said by the Lord that 'You should accept the acarya.' Acarya means one who transmits bhakti cult. Bhakti-samsanat, spreading, gosthyanandi. One who is not spreading—he is cultivating Krishna consciousness for his personal benefit in a secluded place, sitting and chanting—that is also nice, but he's not acarya. Acarya means he must spread. Gosthyanandi. Bhajananandi, gosthyanandi. So generally, gosthyanandi means one who wants to increase the number of devotees. He's called gosthyanandi. And one who is self-satisfied, that 'Let me do my own duty,' he is called bhajananandi. So my Guru Maharaja, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, he was gosthyanandi. He wanted to increase the number of devotees. And the more you increase the number of devotees, the more you become very much recognized by Krishna. It is Krishna's business."

Therefore we should never think that there is something wrong with the desire to make the whole world Krishna conscious. Factually it is just the opposite. It's wrong if we don't try to make the entire world Krishna conscious. This is simply human decency. If someone is suffering, a compassionate person will try his best to relieve them from their suffering. Since at the present moment the entire world is suffering due a lack of Krishna consciousness, how could a Krishna conscious person be callous to their suffering not caring whether they go back to Godhead or to hell? If he is actually Krishna conscious, such callousness is not possible.

Question: Who is My Spiritual Master?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

I am hearing lectures of many ISKCON gurus, but I am really confused about who is my spiritual master. My devotee friends are initiated, and they have so much love for their Guru Maharaja and are so much surrendered. I feel myself like a lost child. Sometimes I start feeling like maybe I don't belong to this society, but the love of Srila Prabhupada brings me back somehow. How will I identify who is my Spiritual Master? Is it like the feeling of surrender comes just by looking at him, or by hearing his words?

Disappearance Day of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati

Today is the disappearance day of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, the spiritual master of our most beloved Srila Prabhupada. Of course, it is not that he is dead and gone. In this connection the words of Bhaktivinoda Thakura are very poignant:

"He reasons ill who tells that Vaisnavas die,
when thou art living still in sound.
The Vaisnavas die to live, and living try
to spread the holy name around."

These great personalities live forever and continually bestow their blessings upon all those who are always trying to awaken the love of God within their hearts and within the hearts of all. So let us always worship these great personalities continually begging that they bestow their merciful blessings upon us.

Question: Why Hare Krishna Is Mahamantra?

Why is the Hare Krishna mantra called as mahamantra by ISKCON? Some Hindu brahmanas say there is no such thing as mahamantra but only mantra.

Kindly enlighten.

Your insignificant servant,

Answer: It's the Topmost of All Mantras

The Hare Krishna mantra is called the mahamantra because it is the most spiritually powerful of all mantras. There is no mantra that has more potency to deliver the fallen, conditioned soul back to his original position in the spiritual sky. Mahamantra literally means "the great chant for deliverance," and it is specifically called the mahamantra in the revealed scriptures. Also, this verse from the Kali-Santarana Upanishad explains why the Hare Krishna mahamantra is the greatest of mantras:

hare krsna hare krsna
krsna krsna hare hare
hare rama hare rama
rama rama hare hare

iti sodasakam namnam
natah parataropayah
sarva-vedesu drsyate

“These sixteen names composed of thirty-two syllables are the only means to counteract the evil effects of Kali-yuga. In all the Vedas it is seen that to cross the ocean of nescience there is no alternative to the chanting of Hare Krishna."

Any brahmana who does not accept the authority of the revealed scriptures is not an actual brahmana. He is a pseudo brahmana. Also, Hindu brahmana means that he is not a real a brahmana. Brahmana means one who realizes Brahman, the Absolute Truth. One who has realized the Absolute Truth is situated beyond bodily distinctions such as Hindu, Muslim, Christian, etc. Anyone who continues to identify on the bodily platform is not a brahmana, someone who has realized the Absolute Truth. Srila Prabhupada has trained his disciples how to become actual brahmanas, not the srascal so-called brahmanas who call them brahmanas and then engage themselves in material sense gratification.

If You Try to Change the World, It Will Not Change You.

The devotee easily protects himself from the contaminating influence of the material world because instead of being affected by the material world he affects the material world by as much as possible giving it Krishna consciousness wherever he goes. Instead of allowing the material world to change him, he fully absorbs himself in trying to change the world by making it Krishna conscious. Because his mission is global Krishnaization, he is protected from the influence of the material energy and becomes gradually fully Krishnized within his heart.

When Will The Leaders Ever Learn?

When will the world's leaders ever learn that living one's life based on the principle of material sense gratification is a complete waste of one's human energy? When will they ever learn that a human society based on economic development can do nothing more than produce a class of polished animals? When will they ever learn that real education begins from the point of training everyone to understand that the material body is not the real self, that the spirit-soul within is the real self. When will they ever learn the only purpose of life is to develop our pure love for God? Until our leaders wake up and learn these things and pass them on to their followers, they will continue to mislead the human society paving its royal road to hell.

President Obama Appreciates Krishna's Peace Formula

Recently I wrote the president of the United States, Barack Obama, introducing him to my song, The Peace Formula, which presents Krishna's peace formula as given in Bhagavad-gita 5.29. I encouraged him to apply these principles in his office as president of the United States. On 24 December 2015 I received from him the following reply:

The White House, Washington

Thank you for writing. Messages like yours serve as an important reminder of the work that still lies ahead, and they reflect a commitment to staying engaged in shaping the future we know is possible. As long as I’m President, I’ll keep pouring everything I have into securing a brighter tomorrow for people across our country.

Again, thank you for writing. By embracing hope and speaking out on issues that matter to you, you can help make a difference. I want you to know I’m listening, and I wish you all the best.

Is "Merry Christmas" Politically Correct?

When I was a child at this time of year everywhere you would hear people saying "Merry Christmas." Groups of people singing Christmas carols used to go house to house in the evenings just before Christmas. Nowadays at this time of year you don't hear the word "Christmas" much any more because it is considered to be politically incorrect. People are being advised leave Christ out of Christmas by saying something more "neutral" like "Seasons Greetings" or "Happy Holidays" to avoid offending those who are not Christians. I wonder if they ever thought about not offending God. He's also a person, and a pretty important person at that.

A Krishna conscious person understands the universal nature of religion and appreciates the religious sentiments of all. He has no problem glorifying any great saintly teacher. For example, Srila Prabhupada accepts that Christ, Buddha, and Mohammed are all shaktyavesh avatars, persons divinely empowered to preach the glories of God. Therefore the devotee of Krishna is happy to hear "Merry Christmas," "Allah Akbar," or anything that reminds him of God because the whole purpose of his life is to remember God at every moment.

Question: How to Get Rid of Sinful Thoughts?

What should I do if somehow or other I commit sin at mental level towards Lord or Guru? At present I bow down and recite prayers for forgiveness. But now, I think it is becoming a habit. Are my actions correct, or do they need to be modified? What is the remedy?

Please guide.

Answer: Expunge Them or Suffer Repeated Birth and Death

If one goes on cyclically, ritualistically thinking sinful thoughts and then asking for forgiveness, he will not be able to free himself from this tendency because such repentance is only superficial. It is not genuine. If one actually sincerely regrets his sinful thoughts, he will with great determination expunge them. He will kick them out and order them to never come back again. If sinful thoughts are allowed to fester, they will eventually manifest as sinful acts and condemn you to remain entangled in the cycle of repeated birth and death. So now you have to decide what you want. Do you want liberation from birth and death? Or do you want to remain caught up in this hellish material existence, birth after birth? The choice is yours. Now do the needful.

Turn the Tide of the Times

The tide of Kali has swept in and is drowning the whole world in senseless hedonism, godlessness, and self-indulging so-called religion. In spite of the repeated attempts of the leaders to rectify the situation, due to their pathetic ineptness, the chaos continues its downward spiral, escalating more and more, leaving the world population ever more confused and frustrated. What is needed now more than ever is a powerful spiritual revolution to turn the tide of the times away from this insanity back to the original pure happy harmonious loving culture that once thrived on this planet. By the combined mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His Divine Grace A.C. Respected Gurudeva,

When one thinks of the Lord within our hearts, as per Krishna's instruction in Bhagavad-gita 18.61, should one meditate on one of the many four-armed Vishnu forms of the Lord or should one meditate on the be Lord's original two-armed Krishna forms?

Mumbai, India

Answer: Two-Armed Syamasundara

Srila Prabhupada has answered your question as follows in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 11.55:

"There are hundreds and thousands of Vishnus, but for a devotee no form of Krishna is important but the original form, two-handed Syamasundara. How to Develop a Taste for the Holy Name

Lord Caitanya has taught us that if we want to unlimitedly relish the sweet nectar of Krishna's holy name, all we have to do is become completely humble, considering ourselves to be lower than the straw in the street. The difficulty is that we are very proud, considering ourselves to be very great. This is why we are not able to fully relish the nectar of Krishna's holy name. So how do we become free from this false pride and attain true humility? The answer is given by the great spiritual master, Srila Narottama Das Thakura, who has advised us to always worship the spiritual master and the Vaisnavas. In other words the more that we can be in the mood of serving the spiritual master and the devotees, the more we will be able to relish the ecstasy of chanting Hare Krishna.

Question: How Can So Much Suffering Exist?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada,

I was in a discussion with a colleague. He was formerly in the army and so has seen very rough things. I told him that things happen based on our past karma and that is why we suffer, but he does not believe it. He says if God existed, he would not have allowed the kind of suffering he witnessed. How do I present him the truth?

Also, he was saying how can we humans have existed millions of years ago as described in Vedas when the scientists have concluded that we have only been around for 100,000 years.

Answer: We Are Simply Reaping the Fruit of Our Actions

If we disobey the laws of the state we are punished by government. Even in the laws of physics, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. So it is not all surprising that if we disobey the laws of God that we will get a reaction. This is a simple matter of common sense.

The scientists are blindly locked into their modern day theory of evolution. If they encounter any evidence which does not fit into their theory, they simply reject it. Therefore they are not real scientists. They are dogmatists. We have historical evidence which proves beyond any shadow of a doubt that human society goes back for at least two million years.

On This Auspicious Day 15 Years Ago

21 December 2015--On this auspicious day, Gita Jayanti (the day 5,000 years ago when Krishna spoke the Bhagavad-gita to Arjuna) 15 years ago, I received an email from ISKCON's GBC secretary informing me that I had received the blessings of ISKCON's Governing Body Commission (GBC) to initiate disciples. This was reconfirmation of Srila Prabhupada's personal encouragement to me that I could become a spiritual master as well as further reconfirmation of what Srila Prabhupada has often stated his in books, lectures, and conversations that his disciples would initiate their own disciples. Now, since that time in the year 2000, Srila Prabhupada has sent me over 200 sincere boys and girls who are my initiated disciples. As they have promised to do their duty to always obey my instructions, I have reciprocally promised to do my duty to deliver them back to home, back to Godhead, even if I have to take birth after birth in this material world to do so. My spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, has pulled me out of the cycle of birth, so now by his divine grace I am doing the same for my disciples.

Answer: Krishna is the Absolute Source of Everything

There is no question of how real God was, is, or will be because He is the absolute source of reality itself.

It's not that Krishna is the so-called God particle or the Higgs Boson. Contrarily, it is Krishna or God who is the source of all particles. Particles are energy, and Krishna is the energetic source all energy.

Krishna is superior to all the gods because they are nothing more than manifestations of His expanded energy.

May That Global Awakening Come Today

The amount of blatantly vicious cruelty that it is being currently being meted out on this planet is overwhelmingly shocking. That human beings can become so tortuously evil is hard to comprehend. But when we consider that our present day society is a like a body with its head cut off, it starts to make sense. In the former peaceful happy days on this planet before the advent of the Kali Yuga 5,000 years ago, there was a class of enlightened spiritual masters known as brahmanas who had fully realized what is Brahman, the Absolute Truth, and who guided all the members of the world society beginning with the political leaders, how to live in perfect harmony with the Absolute Truth, the source of all existence. ISKCON, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, was founded in 1965 for the purpose of re-establishing this class of brahmanas for restoring global peace and prosperity to the human society. When the world leaders will realize their incompetency and take guidance from the ISKCON leaders how to perfectly manage the world situation a new era of peace and prosperity will dawn on this planet. We pray that that day of global awakening will come today before it's too late, before there is a complete meltdown of the world society into total anarchy. May that global awakening come today. Question: How to Convince My Husband Not to Eat Chicken?

What is the hierarchy of the living forms that a soul starts from till soul gets a human form?

Philosophically I believe in what Srila Prabhupada says that one should not eat meat. But how to convince my husband to stop eating non-veg ( mostly has chicken) at home?

Your humble and insignificant servant

Answer: Does He Want His Next Birth as a Chicken?

Citing the authority of Vedic wisdom Srila Prabhupada explains how through evolution the conditioned soul first takes birth in the aquatics, then the plants, next the insects and reptiles, thereafter the birds, followed by the beasts, and finally he gets a human form. It must be clearly noted that this evolution takes place as the soul transmigrates from one form to another in the cycle of birth and death. This is quite different from the nonsensical Darwinian theory that the forms are evolving. The forms are already there, created by Lord Brahma. And the conditioned soul, by taking birth after birth, gradually evolves to the human form from which he can either escape the cycle of birth and death by awakening his dormant Krishna consciousness or, by remaining absorbed in material sense gratification, go back down into the lower species, where he will get a better facility for material sense gratification.

If your husband does not mind becoming a chicken in his next birth to be eaten by the very same chickens that he ate, he may continue eating chicken.

For the Ultimate Welfare of All

The Krishna conscious person lives for the ultimate welfare of all living beings. He does not think only of himself. This is why we find this following prayer of Prahlada Maharaja in the Srimad Bhagavatam:

svasty astu visvasya khalah prasidatam
dhyayantu bhutani sivam mitho dhiya
manas ca bhadram bhajatad adhoksaje
avesyatam no matir apy ahaituki

"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other's welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him.
--Srimad Bhagavatam 5.18.9

The more we are dedicated to the deliverance of living beings from this rotten material existence, the more our own position of liberation becomes assured. The Atheists Bray Like Foolish Asses

Science proves the fact that everything has an origin. Therefore existence cannot be originless as is now being proposed by foolish dogmatists masquerading as scientists. This means that God, the original source of everything, cannot not exist. Therefore if one argues that God does not exist, he must also argue that consequently nothing at all exists and that therefore he also does not exist. But if he does not exist, how can he argue anything? Therefore the foolish atheist cancels out his own dogmatic, non-scientific arguments and would be better off to stop braying out his so-called philosophy like a foolish ass.

Question: Why Krishna Ordered Shiva to Deviate Humanity?

Hare Krishna!

Please kindly accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to you.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Could you please explain why the Lord would encourage the generation of more population as it is stated in this excerpt of Srimad Bhagavatam Introduction?

"The Lord further added that the Mayavada philosophy taught by Sankaracharya is an imaginary explanation of the Vedas, but it had to be taught by him (Sankaracharya) because he was ordered to teach it by the Personality of Godhead. In the Padma Purana it is stated that the Personality of Godhead ordered His Lordship Shiva to deviate the human race from Him (the Personality of Godhead). The Personality of Godhead was to be so covered so that people would be encouraged to generate more and more population. His Lordship Shiva said to Devi: 'In the Kali-yuga, I shall preach the Mayavada philosophy, which is nothing but clouded Buddhism, in the garb of a brahmana.'"

Answer: Because They Wanted to Be Deviated

Krishna explains in the Bhagavad-gita that He is the source of remembrance and forgetfulness. So if someone wants to remember Krishna, Krishna will give him full intelligence how to always remember Him. And if someone wants to forget Krishna, the all-merciful Lord will facilitate that also. This is why he ordered Lord Shiva to appear as Sankaracharya to preach Mayavada philosophy. In this way Krishna has given first class forgetfulness facility to all those who desire it. Due to Sankaracharya’s preaching there is now a huge increase of the atheistic population. These fools have gotten very good facility by the arrangement of the Lord to go very deeply into forgetfulness of the Lord. But Krishna has also appeared in this Kali Yuga as Lord Caitanya for the purpose of delivering all those who are inclined to be His devotees through the most simple, sublime process of chanting the holy names of God. So the conclusion is that this Kali Yuga gives everyone the best facility. We get the best facility for forgetting God as well as the best facility for remembering God. It is up to each of us to decide of which facility we would like to take advantage.

Just Try to Satisfy Krishna and You Will See Him

If the parts of the body try to become satisfied or nourished while neglecting the belly, they will not be successful. Contrarily, if the parts of the body co-operate to take care of the needs of the belly, they all become satisfied. Similarly, just as the bodily parts become satiated only by satisfying the belly, we, the living beings, can only become fulfilled by satisfying the root of all existence, Lord Sri Krishna. Fools and rascals argue that Krishna is not the root of existence, but when we ask them for proof of this, their inability to do so discloses the insubstantiality of their argument.

The proof of Krishna's primordiality is the most substantial of all proofs. Just as the sun's existence is evidenced by opening your eyes to see the sun, Krishna's existence is substantiated by opening your eyes to see how Krishna is factually emanating everything from His transcendental body at every moment. If you cannot see Krishna, this means that you are presently blinded or covered by the cataracts of material consciousness. These cataracts can easily be removed by applying the salve of love, known in Sanskrit as premanjana, to your eyes. By taking advantage of this premanjana, you will then be able to directly perceive Krishna face to face, eye to eye, witnessing how He is indeed the source of all existence, the supreme cause of all causes.

Answer: They Are Krishna Himself

A mantra is a transcendental sound vibration which, when sincerely meditated upon, delivers you from this material world. Such sound vibrations are powerful because they are not of this material world. They are mercy dispensations coming from the spiritual world. In other words, they are non-different from Krishna Himself. Especially in this age, the Hare Krishna mahamantra is the sound incarnation of Krishna Himself blessing us with His divine presence in order to save us from our deeply entrenched illusion and unbearable suffering.

Question: Preach to Deliver the World or Only to Deliver Ourselves?

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I heard in a lecture the speaker was saying, "Don't think that you will deliver the whole world by preaching. You are preaching for you only. Your preaching will be successful when you preach for 10 years and you make one devotee in that ten years and that devotee is you."

But in your writings I find that you instruct to preach for delivering the people of the world. I am confused. please instruct me.

Your servant,

Answer: Deliver Yourself by Trying to Deliver Everyone

According to this person's philosophy, he is only preaching to himself, not to others. Therefore for him to give a lecture to others is an act of hypocrisy, which is a symptom of the Kali yuga. If this is his philosophy, he should walk his talk and not preach to others. He should only preach privately to himself.

Insofar as what is the actual philosophy of Krishna consciousness, Srila Prabhupada ordered his disciples, "Preach to the world." He ordered us to become perfect in understanding of science Krishna consciousness, to become guru, and deliver the whole world. Therefore the loyal disciples will certainly try their best to carry out this order. By this total dedication to the world deliverance mission of Lord Caitanya, the devotee's personal deliverance is automatically guaranteed. In other words, the quickest way for you to become fully qualified to go back to home, back to Godhead is try to deliver the whole world, by giving Krishna consciousness to everyone that you meet.

Of course, the devotee never considers himself the doer, even if he has miraculous results from his preaching. He gives all credit to his spiritual master. Srila Prabhupada never took any credit for attracting so many disciples all over the world. He said that they were all sent to him by his Guru Maharaja, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. The only credit that Srila Prabhupada would take for the amazing results of his preaching was that he had always faithfully followed the instructions of his spiritual master.

Also, in this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in the Nectar of Devotion Introduction:

"The author of Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu, Srila Rupa Gosvami, very humbly submits that he is just trying to spread Krishna consciousness all over the world, although he humbly thinks himself unfit for this work. That should be the attitude of all preachers of the Krishna consciousness movement, following in the footsteps of Srila Rupa Gosvami. We should never think of ourselves as great preachers, but should always consider that we are simply instrumental to the previous acaryas, and simply by following in their footsteps we may be able to do something for the benefit of suffering humanity.”

Therefore as a dutiful follower of Rupa Goswami and Srila Prabhupada, the Krishna conscious preacher fully dedicates his life for making the entire world Krishna conscious even though he knows that he is completely unfit for this mighty task. He endeavors to do this by always preaching and by always sincerely trying to please his spiritual master with all of his thoughts, words, and deeds in all times, places, and circumstances. In this way he becomes a suitable instrument through which his spiritual master, the previous acaryas, and Lord Caitanya can successfully accomplish their world deliverance mission.

How to Conquer the World

Srila Prabhupada has given us the simple formula for conquering the world as soon as possible:

"If we simply repeat this philosophy exactly as it is, without any misrepresentation or adulteration, then this movement will never be checked, and we will conquer the world."

Just see the amazing power of purely repeating the teachings of Krishna. Simply by doing this, all bogus philosophies will be defeated and the Krishna consciousness movement will lead the world out of its present most perilous, chaotic condition. So now that we know what is our duty we must purely broadcast the teachings of Krishna all over the world to bring to everyone this ocean of unlimited mercy.

Should we chant loudly or should we chant very quietly?

Your Humble servant,

Answer: Loudly and Softly

The answer is both because in kirtana we loudly sing the Lord’s names and dance, and in japa we softly chant the Lord’s names while counting on our japa beads the number of repetitions of the Hare Krishna mantra that we have uttered.

Question: When They Say the Vedas Are Mythology?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

What should we tell people who tell us that the Vedas are mythology?

Your student

Answer: Tell Them This

You can tell them, "What is your proof that the Vedas are mythology? Your statement is nothing but baseless dogma. You have not a shred of evidence to support your blind faith. The Vedic laboratory manuals precisely instruct true scientists how to directly experience the supreme source of all existence. When you come out of your dogmatic delusion by agreeing to become a true scientist the Vedas will teach you how to personally experience face to face, eye to eye, the original source of millions and billions of universes. So are you ready to stop being a dogmatist? Or do you want to continue being a brainless fool?"

Take Over the World As Soon As Possible

There is only one solution for bringing an end to all of this world's problems. The Krishna consciousness movement must take over the world as soon as possible. We are not referring to a revolution by guns and bombs. No. What we speak of is the total respiritualization of the human society through the process of education. How will that education be done? That will be done through transcendental book distribution, because the more that we distribute the books of our beloved Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the more that the world will be conquered. This is what Srila Prabhupada desired more than anything, that we completely flood this planet in an ocean of his books. On 5 January 1974 in Los Angeles he gave us the following instruction comparing book distribution to the playing of the mridanga drum:

"There is no literature throughout the universe like Srimad-Bhagavatam. There is no comparison. There is no competition. Every word is for the good of the human society. Every word, each and every word. Therefore we stress so much in the book distribution. Somehow or other, if the book goes in one hand, he will be benefited. At least he will see, 'Oh, they have taken so much price. Let me see what is there.' If he reads one sloka, his life will be successful. If one sloka, one word. This is such nice things. Therefore we are stressing so much, 'Please distribute book, distribute book, distribute book.' A greater mridanga. We are chanting, playing our mridanga. It is heard within this room or little more. But this mridanga will go home to home, country to country, community to community, this mridanga."

So let us all dedicate our lives fully to the mass distribution of Srila Prabhupada's books. In this way the whole world will be conquered, and it will become a paradise on earth. For this purpose we encourage all of our readers to go to to learn how they can become practically engaged in blessing this troubled world with Srila Prabhupada's books.

Question: What is My Relationship With You?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I do not feel Krishna so close to me. I'm still searching for something. I have not found what I am searching for, but I have also found much. I have found you and Krishna consciousness, but still I have not found all for what I'm searching.

I do not know what is my relationship with you. You are very busy and have so many relationships and duties to take care of. I feel there is not room for me in your life.

Answer: Servant and Master, If You Will Accept It

You do not yet realize that by finding Krishna you have found everything. You are still covered by the clouds of illusion. That is why you do not realize that by finding Krishna you have factually already found everything that you are searching for.

If you will accept it, by taking initiation your relationship with me will be as my servant. If you take initiation, as your master I will be fully dedicated to doing whatever it takes to deliver you back to home, back to Godhead, even if I have to take birth after birth in this material world to do so. Please try to understand that there is no greater love than the love of the spiritual master for his disciple. Because you are holding back from surrender you are not able to realize this, and you are foolishly thinking that there is something beyond Krishna. There cannot be anything beyond Krishna. Because He is the source of everything and the energizer of everything, everything exists within Him.

By accepting Krishna as the Supreme Absolute Truth, and by obediently taking shelter and initiation from the bona fide spiritual master, the spiritual master will become fully manifested in your heart as your constant well-wisher. When you are thus sheltered, you will never feel separated from the spiritual master, not even for a moment. You will then have full unrestricted access to your spiritual master at every minute. Simply you have to learn the art of how to connect with him by fully embracing within your heart his instructions, accepting them as your very life and soul.

You are not feeling the closeness you desire because you are keeping yourself at a distance from the spiritual master. It is not that, as you foolishly think, the spiritual master is keeping himself at a distance from you. The spiritual master has unlimited room in his heart for you, but you are keeping yourself on the outside, hesitating to fully embrace your potential relationship with him as his eternal servant. You are like someone who wants to taste honey but only licks the outside of the bottle without sticking their tongue inside. So now, stick your tongue inside the bottle. Give up your foolish hesitation and fully take shelter of your spiritual master. This will be the final end of your loneliness. You will then feel how your Guru Maharaja is eternally fully manifested in your heart at every minute, ever-increasingly blessing you with the sweetest transcendental bliss and the most sublime transcendental knowledge.

Today's Thought:

Is Being a Guru Dishonest?

In the Bhagavad-gita (12.7) Lord Sri Krishna states, "I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death." And in the Srimad Bhagavatam (5.5.18) it is stated that one should not become a guru unless he can deliver his disciples from birth and death. So one might question, "Since Krishna is the actual deliverer, how can anyone legitimately take the position of being a spiritual master? Wouldn't that be dishonest?" The answer is that both Lord Sri Krishna and the spiritual master are the deliverers because Krishna does His work of delivering the fallen conditioned soul through the agency of the bona fide spiritual master. In other words, the bona fide spiritual master is empowered by Krishna to deliver his disciples back to the spiritual world.

For example, I have many disciples all over the world. By connecting my disciples with the sublime process of Krishna consciousness as taught by my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, and by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita, I am factually delivering my disciples from the cycle of repeated birth and death. Even though I am not the doer, I am giving them immortality by connecting them with my spiritual master and Lord Sri Krishna.

The conclusion is that no one becomes a guru by manufacturing his own teachings and that anyone can become a guru by purely presenting the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna as they are coming down to us through the bona fide process of disciplic succession.

Question: Can a Conditioned Soul Have His Own Opinion?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances,
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I heard that a personality is made of many individual desires. How does the individuality of the devotee manifest since he is living according to the instructions and desires of other devotees and Krishna?

I understand that a fully surrendered devotee has a spiritual intelligence and can have opinions since he has his individual relationship with Krishna in one of the five rasas. But can a conditioned soul have his opinion if he is conditioned by his mind? Is it a right argument that a conditioned soul can have his opinion, which is in agreement with Krishna’s opinion, when he has realized the words of Krishna and understands what is he agreeing with? Arjuna and Sanjaya were self-realized souls but what is the position of the conditioned souls? What is the proper understanding of surrendering to Krishna and following Him for a devotee who is conditioned by the modes of nature and has material desires? What is his individuality in Krishna Consciousness movement?

Your servant,

Answer: His Opinions Are Dictated by the Modes of Nature

It is not that a person is made of many individual desires. Each person in all of existence is a manifestation of Krishna’s desire to taste a certain unique type of flavor or rasa in a loving reciprocal relationship with a particular devotee. Just as no two snowflakes are alike, so also no two persons in all of existence are alike. Everyone is fully unique.

Here are your additional questions with answers:

Question: But can a conditioned soul have his opinion if he is conditioned by his mind?

Answer: His opinions are not really his own opinions. They are dictated to him the three modes of material nature.

Question: Is it a right argument that a conditioned soul can have his opinion, which is in agreement with Krishna’s opinion, when he has realized the words of Krishna and understands what is he agreeing with?

Answer: When someone fully realizes the import of Krishna’s words and agrees with Krishna he is no longer a conditioned soul. He is now a liberated soul.

Question: Arjuna and Sanjaya were self-realized souls. But what is the position of the conditioned souls?

Answer: Since the opinions of the conditioned souls are being dictated to them by the three modes of material nature, they are not really their own opinions.

Question: What is the proper understanding of surrendering to Krishna and following Him for a devotee who is conditioned by the modes of nature and has material desires?

Answer: If you will fully surrender yourself in submissive service to Lord Sri Krishna by following His instruction to serve the bona spiritual master, you are no longer under the conditioning influence of the modes of nature. You are now a liberated soul.

Question: What is his individuality in the Krishna Consciousness movement?

Answer: Every devotee has his own unique relationship with Krishna and with his spiritual master. Just like I have many students, and you are one of them. But I see that all of my students there is no one else like you. You are a completely unique individual. And the more you serve Guru and Krishna with love, the more your original unique personality will become manifested.

A Krishna conscious person cannot tolerate seeing the entire world caught up in illusion. Therefore he fully dedicates his every thought, word, and deed in all times, places, and circumstances to the Krishnaization of Planet Earth. He intensely desires that the entire human population can become happy by taking up the pathway of Krishna bhakti. Always encouraged and inspired by Krishna's teaching in the Bhagavad-gita that ideal behavior can change the world, the devotee sets an ideal example of proper Vaisnava behavior in whatever he does wherever he goes. Since devotees maintain their individuality, does this mean they no longer have their own opinions?

Answer: His Opinion Fully Agrees With Krishna's Opinion

When a devotee fully surrenders to Krishna he still remains an individual person. He does not lose his individuality and merge into Krishna. Therefore since he is still an individual person he still has his own opinions. This is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita in which Arjuna and Sanjaya both say, "That is my opinion." Of course, it is not that they disagree with Krishna. They are both in full agreement with Krishna. But still they do so from the perspective of being individual person who have their own individual opinions or points of view.

"To feel separation from the spiritual master or Krishna is very good position. That means one who is in pure love with Krishna and His representative, spiritual master, he thinks always of them. And this thinking process is Krishna consciousness. If we can think always of Krishna even in separation, that is Krishna consciousness. Answer: Qualify Yourself to Taste the Nectar

A person who is suffering from jaundice will not taste sugar candy as sweet. For him the taste will be bitter. The cure for jaundice is to take sugar candy. So if the jaundice patient regularly takes sugar candy in spite of its bitterness, it will gradually regain its natural sweetness. So if you want to taste the ecstasy of the pastimes of the Supreme Lord, you must become free from your material disease by regularly hearing about them from Krishna's devotees, not materialists. In this way your disease of material consciousness will gradually become cured and you will taste unlimited nectar when you hear Krishna's pastimes. Question: Senior Matajis Want to Be Called "Prabhu"

In our temple some of the senior Matajis want to be called "Prabhu." What is the proper etiquette in this regard?

Answer: Proper Understanding of Senior

There are four different ways of understanding seniority: when someone was initiated, their physical age, their position in the society of devotees, and how much they have awakened their dormant Krishna consciousness. Although we honor all four types of seniority, the fourth type is the most important.

Srila Prabhupada instructed us:

"Except one's own wife, all women should be addressed as 'Mother.' This is civilization. Then there will be no corrupt relation. If you, from the very beginning, you establish your relationship with other women as mother, then there is no question of other relationship."

So if a woman is demanding that we not follow the instruction of Srila Prabhupada, she is not very advanced in Krishna consciousness, and is not a truly senior devotee in the most important sense of the term. Such a senior devotee will be respected for the years they have spent in Krishna consciousness and whatever position they hold, but their defective mentality should also be understood so that it is not imitated by those who are desiring to strictly follow Srila Prabhupada.

Answer: The Origin of All Form Must Possess Form

Since God is everything and the origin of everything, He must possess everything that exists within Himself. And since within existence we see that there are unlimited varieties of forms, we can therefore logically and scientifically conclude that God must necessarily also possess form. Thus the idea of God being formless is a completely nonscientific, dogmatic concoction manufactured by those who are envious of God. By saying that God is formless they are trying, like the atheists, to kill God. But they cannot kill God. Rather it is they who will end up being killed by God at the time of death.

By his strong desire, the holy name of Lord Gauranga will spread throughout all the countries of the Western world. In all the cities, towns, and villages on the earth, from all the oceans, seas, rivers, and streams, everyone will chant the holy name of Krishna. As the vast mercy of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu conquers all directions, a flood of transcendental ecstasy will certainly cover the land. When all the sinful, miserable living entities become happy, the Vaisnavas' desire is then fulfilled."

Therefore let us work diligently and intelligently to bring that most glorious, happy day to this suffering world as soon as possible.

Today's Thought:

Should We Hide Krishna?

Sometimes a word for word translation of a verse which neglects the inner meaning of the verse can give one a distorted understanding of the verse. This is why we need to understand verses not fanatically, but based on the teachings of the great Vaisnava acharyas. For example in the Bhagavad-gita 7.11 Krishna says, "kamo 'smi", which literally menas, "I am sex." So one could think, that tonight I want to experience Krishna so I will go have sex with a prostitute. But from the Vaisnava acharyas we know that Krishna is not talking about sex in general, but is instead referring to only to that sex which is in accordance with religious principles. This means only having sex with one's wife for the purpose of procreation.

Another example of this is Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.147:

gopayed devatam istam gopayed gurumatmanah
gopayec ca nijam mantram gopayen nija-malikam

If we simply take a literal translation we get:

"One should hide one's ista-deva, one should hide one's guru, one should hide one's mantra, and one should hide one's japa-mala."

But this does not make any sense because Krishna is our ista-deva, our worshipful Lord, and Lord Caitanya has ordered us to tell everyone we meet about Krishna. So how can we simultaneously hide Krishna and tell everyone about Krishna? We cannot do this. So there must be a more proper understanding of this verse. Here is a translation of this verse which is in accord with the conclusions of the great Vaisnava acharyas:

"One should not indiscriminately reveal his worshipable Lord,
his guru, his mantra, and japa beads to anyone and everyone."

I have had practical experience of this. Once when my wife and I were checking in for a midnight flight from Fiji to Los Angeles an envious atheist noticing my Vaisnava dress approached me and asked me, "What is your philosophy?" It was clear by his tone of voice and facial expression that he was an envious atheist who simply wanted to philosophically smash me. I immediately understood that to such an envious person I cannot reveal such things as my beloved Krishna, my beloved Srila Prabhupada, and my beloved mahamantra because all that he will do when he hears about them is make blasphemy against them. Therefore my answer to his question was simply this: "Know who you are be who you are." The man walked away frustrated and disappointed that he was not able to defeat me. But in this way he was saved from the grievous sin of blasphemy against Krishna and Srila Prabhupada.

The real point then of this verse is not to reveal Krishna, guru, mantra, and japa to those who are envious. The glorification of these should be reserved for the devotees and for the innocent, non-envious people. We want to broadcast to the entire world the glories of Krishna, our spiritual master, our Hare Krishna mantra, and the wonderful process of chanting 16 rounds of japa daily. But we must do it intelligently so our preaching will bear fruit. This should be clearly understood.

There is a nice analogy in this connection. We do not teach mathematics to small children in the form of calculus. We instead teach them simple mathematics, that one plus one equals two. In this way, gradually step by step we can bring them to higher level mathematics. Srila Prabhupada told us, "First convince them that they are not their bodies." So we have to gradually educate people regarding Krishna, guru, the mahamantra, and japa in an intelligent way that will facilitate them in their comprehension and assimilation of Vaisnava philosophy. This is the proper understanding of this verse from the Hari-bhakti-vilasa.

The conclusion is that we need a bona fide spiritual master to teach us how to properly understand the scriptures. Otherwise we can easily get the wrong idea and deviate from the path of Krishna consciousness even while we naively think that we are following the scriptures. This is why in addition to scriptures we need the guidance of the saintly teachers and our spiritual master.

Appreciation: My Wonderful Experience in Vrindavana

My Dearmost Srila Gurudeva and Srimati Gurumataji,

I humbly fall at the lotus feet of Your Grace and Srimati Gurumataji and thank both Your Graces again and again a million times for allowing us to celebrate Your Grace's Vyasa puja here in Sri Vrindavana in your personal presence. I consider myself to be the most fortunate of all living entities to have witnessed and participated in the most auspicious occasion of a disciple's life. The blissful celebration with my most wonderful Godbrothers and Godsisters from around the world will forever remain etched in my heart.

Srila Gurudeva and Srimati Gurumataji, I am falling short of words to express my joy and the bliss I experienced this time serving both Your Graces in Delhi and in Sri Vrindavana along with my beloved spiritual family. Never in my life have I experienced such nectar, such bliss, that I want to preserve and keep these wonderful, wonderful memories deep in my heart and I intensely desire to remember these moments at the time of my death.

Also, Your Divine Grace's Vyasa puja gave us an unique opportunity to know more about my spiritual family and I can't thank Your Grace and Srimati Gurumataji enough for this mercy. Had I not met these family members I could have never known that each one of my Godbrothers and Godsisters is so unique and special. After serving along with them, my appreciation for my loving family has increased many fold. And I also realized that my position in front of these wonderful devotees is so small as they are far, far, far better disciples and devotees than myself. So much love they have for both Your Graces that I too desire that may I be able to increase my love for Your Grace and my Gurumataji like them.

Each member that I met in our family has inspired me in so many ways. Just like my wonderful mothers Guruvandana (who is like a powerhouse when it comes to serving my spiritual master and mother so dedicatedly), mother Madhumati (who is a truly inspiring book distributor) and mother Hladini (who simply amazed me by washing the dishes for hours after the prasadam distribution in the temple). And I have no words to describe the selfless, loving service Vraja Kishore Das Brahmacari Prabhu has been rendering to my spiritual master and mother, day in and day out. I heartily and intensely desire to serve my spiritual parents like these wonderful devotees and more to show all the love in my heart for my spiritual master and mother.

It's amazing to see that there are experts in the family in stitching deity dresses like Mother Radhika and Padmamalini, singers like Mothers Gandharvika and Ieva; blissful dancers like Mother Ekayani, and the amazing questions posed by Mother Ashta Sakhi; great cooks like Mother Archana siddhi; photographers like Mother Gintare; jewelry designers like Mother Kundalata; garland making experts like Yasodapriya Mataji and dedicated couples like Mother Bhakti Priya and Anandavardhana Prabhu in serving; Mother Gaurangi and Jagadananda Prabhu (who take care of cows) and Mother Gauralila and Vyasadeva Prabhu (who are a wonderful kirtan team); and all other wonderful Godbrothers and Godsisters of mine, whose names I could not mention but deep in my heart I appreciate their wonderful services to my spiritual master and mother and the Hare Krishna movement.

But most of all, the devotees from Lithuania have deeply touched my heart. Never before have I met such devotees in my life, who have overwhelmed me with their love for my spiritual master and mother. And fortunately I also became one of the recipients of their love. For the first time in my life have I felt as if I found my lost family. By associating with them, my love and service mood for my spiritual master and spiritual mother increased 1,000 fold. The language barrier or poor communication through words did not deter in sharing our hearts and love as a spiritual family. At one point I started to understand what Ekayani Mataji was trying to communicate even without the translation. It amazed me and others as well. Never before in my life have I ever experienced such overflowing love, which had left deep impressions in my heart. Before departing for Lithuania, all the devotee mothers with so much love insisted that I somehow make it to Lithuania next year for the Vyasa puja. And they even gave me a token amount of Rs.1,500 to start saving for my ticket next year. As I could not say 'no' to their love, I said, "I can use this amount only if I fall short of my flight ticket, otherwise, I will donate this amount to Austin, Texas."

After Your Graces departure to Austin, I was worried how to spend the next four days in Vrindavana. But by the causeless mercy of Sri Guru and Sri Krishna we (myself with Mothers Gaurangi, Ekayani, Gauralila and Gandharvika) engaged ourselves in various services in the temple. We served prasadam in the Krishna Hall and also for the next three days in a row we arranged ghee wick lamps to be given to devotees during Damodarastakam in the main temple hall. In the end, the temple gave each of us cake prasadam and small picture (desk frame) of Sri Sri Radha Syamasundara as a token of appreciation for our service. I also participated in washing dishes in the prasadam hall along with Mother Hladini, who is a great inspiration for us and also assisted in flower garlands for Sri Sri Gaura Nitai. Never before have I experienced such joy in serving together with my Godsisters.

I can never thank enough, my dear Srila Gurudeva and my dear Srimati Gurumataji for giving shelter to a rascal like me in this wonderful and most amazing family. I humbly fall at both Your Graces lotus feet and deeply desire to always remain eternally engaged in your loving service and humbly beg to forever reside under the shelter of your lotus feet as a particle of dust.

Though I do not deserve, by Your Grace's and Srimati Gurumataji's causeless mercy I received so much of love from these devotees and I will forever remain indebted to both Your Graces,

Your insignificant servant,

Syamapriya devi dasi
