Today's Thought:

Drowning in the Ocean of Maya

This material existence is a vast ocean of maya or illusion. At the present moment we are all drowning in this bewildering ocean. Out of compassion for us in our extreme suffering condition, the spiritual master comes in the boat of transcendental knowledge to rescue us. Hopefully we will all be intelligent enough to take advantage of the guru's mercy and make our lives perfect by taking shelter of that boat and returning to our original home in the spiritual world.

Question: Success Without Guru's Association?

Why did Srila Prabhupada become the most successful disciple of his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, even though he did not have a lot personal association with him?

Your eternal servant,
Nitai Candra das

Answer: Dedication to Guru's Order is Topmost Association

Srila Prabhupada become the most successful preacher of all of his Godbrothers in spite of having very little association of his spiritual master because he accepted the instructions of his spiritual master as his very life and soul. By doing this he was associating with his spiritual master at every minute even more than his Godbrothers who were personally with Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati. If you will follow the same principle of always sticking tightly to the instructions received from your spiritual master, you will become a highly successful preacher of Krishna consciousness.

Today's Thought:

When the Stress Becomes Intolerable

All too often in this material world we face situations in which the stress becomes intolerable. What to do in such situations to keep ourselves fixed in Krishna consciousness? Instead of being overwhelmed we should sincerely thank Krishna for reminding us that this material world is a miserable place and for giving us only a token of what we actually deserve for our previous sinful activities. In other words with the strength of transcendental intelligence derived from a careful study of Vedic wisdom we should cultivate an attitude of gratitude for the wonderful blessings that the Supreme Person is bestowing upon us at every moment.

Question: How Does an Advanced Devotee Accept Praise?

How does an advanced devotee think himself lower than a worm, while at the same time is glorified and served for his position?

Tom

Answer: On Behalf of His Spiritual Master

He never thinks that he is worthy of being glorified. Whatever honor, respect, and service he receives, he accepts, not on his behalf, but on behalf of his spiritual master. Just like during the British rule of India so much honor, respect, and gifts were given to the British Viceroy who ruled over India on behalf of the King of England. But whatever gifts he received he would not keep them for himself. He would send them to the royal treasury in London. So in this way the spiritual master passes on all worship, praise, and honor to his spiritual master and through him to the predecessor acharyas and ultimately to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna.

Today's Thought:

You've Got Nothing to Lose and Everything to Gain

You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain from surrendering to Krishna. Everything you have in this world is not yours at all. It is simply slipping through your fingers. Whatever it may be: your body, your bank balance, your wife, your house, your car--by the influence of maya or illusion for a few years they just appear to be yours until they are completely taken away by cruel time. And on the other hand if you surrender to Krishna, that Supreme Person who is the source of all existence will in fact become your personal property. In this way you will become the virtual owner of everything in all of existence.

Question: How to Inquire from the Spiritual Master?

I learned in the online course at Radhadesh that questions asked to the spiritual master should not be whimsical. Srila Gurudeva, is it true that when questions are posed to spiritual masters or persons sitting on Vyasasana, questions should be thoroughly thought out before posing?

Your servant eternally,

Premananda Das

Answer: Submissive Inquiry Brings Spiritual Advancment

When one inquires from the spiritual master it should be with a view to understand Krishna and the science of Krishna more perfectly, to understand how to overcome all of the defects in one’s heart, and to understand how to make the entire world Krishna conscious as soon as possible. If one submissively inquires in this way from the bona fide spiritual master, he will make great advancement on the path of Krishna bhakti by doing so.

Today's Thought:

Easy-to-Find Guru and Difficult-to Find Guru

It is stated in the Puranas that it is very easy to find a guru who can take away your money, but very difficult to find a guru who can take away your anxiety. This is the real test of the bona fide spiritual master. By completely surrendering unto him with total humility, accepting his instructions as your life and soul, all anxieties are completely removed from your heart. If anxieties remain, it is because we are not fully surrendering unto our spiritual master.

Answer: The Pure Devotee Can Do Both Simultaneously

Pure devotees go back to Godhead. And if Krishna wants they also preach here in this material world. It is possible for the pure devotee to be simultaneously in the material world and in the spiritual world as is the case with Prahlada Maharaja.

Don't Be Mislead by a Cheating So-Called Guru

Kali yuga, the present age which began 5,000 years ago, is the age of the cheaters and the cheated. Therefore in this age there is a super abundance of persons professing to be gurus who have absolutely no qualification whatsoever to be bona fide spiritual masters. This is why we must be careful to select from whom we are going to take spiritual guidance. We have to find and take shelter of that person who is presenting Bhagavad-gita as it is, not some rascal who says, "I'm God; you're God; and we are all God." The bona fide spiritual master is very kind. He has no ulterior motives or a political ax to grind. He simply wants to see that the whole world will become happy as soon as possible.

Question: What Makes Spiritual Master Most Happy?

What makes an ISKCON spiritual master most happy with his disciple?

Tom

Answer: If the Disciple Loves Krishna

There is no question of this institution or that institution. The science of how to please one's spiritual master is universal. The spiritual master becomes most happy when the disciple develops pure love for Krishna. This is the eternal principle of the guru/disciple relationship.

Today's Thought:

No Gaps for Maya

Nowadays there are so many so-called time management gurus who teach us how not to waste our time by always being fully absorbed in material advancement. What they are actually doing is teaching us how to be fully absorbed in wasting our time. It should be noted in this connection that the original and real time management guru is Srila Rupa Goswami. He teaches us "avyartha-kalatvam" that we should not waste a single moment, that we should always be fully absorbed in the transcendental loving service of Lord Sri Krishna. This should be our life's policy. Rupa Gosvami advises that an advanced devotee should always see whether his time is being wasted or properly utilized. To always keep this vision is the perfection of our existence.

An example of this was told to us by His Holiness Vishnujana Swami. One day he was with Srila Prabhupada in his quarters in Los Angeles. Referring to the harmonium sitting there in his room Srila Prabhupada said, "No gaps for maya," that when he has some free moments he can play his harmonium and sing devotional songs. This is a wonderful example for us from Srila Prabhupada of how to always remain fully absorbed in Krishna consciousness. We must keep ourselves always engaged 24 hours a day in the service of the Lord with no gaps for maya.

Our Actual Greatest Good Fortune

Our actual greatest good fortune is to be reconnected with our original identity as eternal servants of the Lord in His most sublime kingdom, the spiritual world. Anything else that we may achieve in this life only has value insofar as it helps us to regain our original lost identity and to help others to achieve the same. Therefore we must be very careful not to be deluded by the so-called good fortune found here in this material world and to always remain focused on what is our actual good fortune.

Question: Who Am I? What is Life's Purpose? How to Fulfill It?

I am 48 years old! I have two kids. Both are grown both are well educated and almost established! I have done my duty sincerely in these years! But I have three questions since the beginning:

Who am I?
What is the purpose of my life?
And how to fulfill it?

U.S.

Answer: Return to Your Original Identity in Spiritual World

You are the eternal servant of the Lord, one of His personal associates from the spiritual world. Somehow due to envy of your master, you took your birth in the material world to try to be a lord on your own, separately from Him. But as this is not possible, you have naturally failed miserably in your attempt to be happy away from Him. But that merciful Lord has kindly come to this world and spoken the Bhagavad-gita to give you the necessary guidance how to return to your original position in the spiritual world. Therefore your purpose in life is to go back to your original position in the spiritual world. How to do it? Krishna instructs you to accept as your guide His representative, the bona fide spiritual master. The spiritual master will then train you how to become qualified to regain your original identity in the spiritual world as soon as possible.

We Are Teaching the Whole World How to Be Happy

Our Krishna consciousness movement is teaching the whole world how to be happy by the simple sublime method of putting Krishna in the center. This process works because factually Krishna is indeed the center of all existence. This is so because everything that exists is an emanation from His transcendental body. That day when the world wakes up and heeds our teachings seriously will be the day when the entire world becomes peaceful and happy. May that day come soon. May that sweet transcendental day come very soon.

Question: Troubles With Breathing While Chanting

Hare Krishna!

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Please accept my humble obeisances!

I have been having troubles with my breathing while I chant my japa. I run out of breath very easily and I also become very hot. I've tried all different ways of breathing, breathing in chanting on one bead while breathing out then repeat, then breathing in and chanting on two beads while breathing out then repeat, then three beads. I've also tried different speed and tempo etc. Nothing seems to work for me, I would just like to be able to chant comfortably so I can enjoy the transcendental sound vibrations of Hare Krishna. Please help me!

Your insignificant servant

J.

Answer: Just Chant and Let Breathing Happen Naturally

Some devotees find it helpful to chant a specific number of beads per breath and in this way regulate their chanting and breathing together. Other devotees just chant without even thinking about their breathing. If you find breathing to be a problem, focus fully on your chanting and let your breathing take care of itself naturally just like when you are talking to someone.

Today's Thought:

Krishna Sends Guru When You Are Ready

In a morning walk conversation between Dr. Patel and Srila Prabhupada in Mumbai, India on 20 December 1975, Srila Prabhupada gave us further insight into just how merciful is Krishna:

Dr. Patel: They say, sir, that if you are very sincere, then the sad-guru comes automatically to you.
Prabhupada: Yes.
Dr. Patel: As you have come to us.
Prabhupada: Yes. Because Krishna is there, if He sees somebody is actually serious to understand Him -- just like Dhruva Maharaja. Dhruva Maharaja, did not..., he did not make any guru, but with fervent desire he went, "Yes, I shall find out Krishna." Mother said "Krishna can be found in the forest," so he went to the forest, and he began according to his own way. Then Krishna sent Narada Muni, that "This boy is very serious. Go and give him real mantra."

Therefore the only thing we require to receive proper guidance on how to realize God is to be sincere. Krishna will then send us the bona fide spiritual master to guide us how to get out of this miserable material existence and gain our original identity in that supremely wondrous spiritual sky.

Question: Gurus Appear Whenever and Wherever Needed?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories unto your divine grace.

I was thinking that not all devotional activity is externally visible. So, there is a possibility that pure devotees descended into different parts of the world to deliver sincere and fortunate souls and then possibly the shifting sands of time covered this up so that we have never heard about these pastimes. Is this correct to understand in this way?

There are great personalities like Narada Muni who can appear at will in any part of the universe to instruct and guide those who are ready to surrender. Such appearances can be known or unknown in recorded history.

Today's Thought:

The Appearance Day of Lord Nityananda

According to the Vaisnava calendar for Austin today is the most auspicious appearance day of Lord Nityananda. The great Vaisnava acarya, Narottama dasa Thakura, has written a very nice in glorification of Lord Nityananda as follows:

nitai-pada-kamala, koti-candra-susitala
je chayay jagata juray
heno nitai bine bhai, radha-krsna paite nai
drdha kori' dharo nitair pay

"The lotus feet of Lord Nityananda are a shelter where one will get the soothing moonlight not only of one, but of millions of moons. If the world wants to have real peace, it should take shelter of Lord Nityananda. Unless one takes shelter under the shade of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, it will be very difficult for him to approach Radha-Krishna. If one actually wants to enter into the dancing party of Radha-Krishna, he must firmly catch hold of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda."

se sambandha nahi ja'r, brtha janma gelo ta'r
sei pasu boro duracar
nitai na bolilo mukhe, majilo samsara-sukhe
vidya-kule ki koribe tar

Anyone who has not established his relationship with Nityananda Prabhu is understood to have spoiled his valuable human birth. Such a human being is actually an uncontrollable animal. Because he never uttered the holy name of Nityananda, he has become merged into so-called material happiness. What can his useless education and family tradition do to help him?"

ahankare matta hoiya, nitai-pada pasariya
asatyere satya kori mani
nitaiyer koruna habe, braje radha-krsna pabe
dharo nitai-carana du'khani

Being maddened after false prestige and identification with the body, one is thinking, Oh, what is Nityananda? What can He do for me? I don't care. The result is that he is accepting something false to be truth. If you actually want to approach the association of Radha-Krishna, you must first achieve the mercy of Lord Nityananda. When He is merciful toward you, then you will be able to approach Radha-Krishna. Therefore you should firmly grasp the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda.

nitaiyer carana satya, tahara sevaka nitya
nitai-pada sada koro asa
narottama boro dukhi, nitai more koro sukhi
rakho ranga-caranera pasa

"The lotus feet of Nityananda are not illusion; they are a fact. One who engages in the transcendental loving service of Nityananda is also transcendental. Always try to catch the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda. This Narottama dasa is very unhappy, therefore I am praying to Lord Nityananda to make me happy. My dear Lord, please keep me close to Your lotus feet."

Purport by Srila Prabhupada:

This is a very nice song sung by Narottama dasa Thakura. He advises that nitai-pada, the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda (kamala means "lotus," and pada means "feet"), are a shelter where one will get the soothing moonlight not only of one, but of millions of moons. We can just imagine the aggregate total value of the soothing shine of millions of moons. In this material world (jagat), which is progressing toward hell, there is always a blazing fire, and everyone is struggling hard without finding peace; therefore, if the world wants to have real peace, it should take shelter under the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, which are cooling like the shining of a million moons. Juraya means "relief." If one actually wants relief from the struggle of existence and actually wants to extinguish the blazing fire of material pangs, Narottama dasa Thakura advises, "Please take shelter of Lord Nityananda."

What will be the result of accepting the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda? He says, heno nitai bine bhai: unless one takes shelter under the shade of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, radha-krsna paite nai - it will be very difficult for him to approach Radha-Krishna. The aim of this Krishna consciousness movement is to enable us to approach Radha-Krishna and associate with the Supreme Lord in His sublime pleasure dance. Narottama dasa Thakura advises that if one actually wants to enter into the dancing party of Radha-Krishna, he must accept the shelter of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda.

Then he says, se sambandha nahi. Sambandha means "connection" or "contact." Anyone who has not contacted a relationship with Nityananda is understood to have spoiled his human birth. In another song also, Narottama dasa says, hari hari bifale janama gonainu: anyone who does not approach Radha-Krishna through a relationship with Nityananda has uselessly spoiled his life. Brtha means "useless," janma means "life," ta'r means "his," and sambandha means "relationship." Anyone who does not make a relationship with Nityananda is simply spoiling the boon of his human form of life. Why is he spoiling it? Sei pasu boro duracar. Sei means "that," pasu means "animal," and duracar means "misbehaved" or "the most misbehaved." Without elevation to Krishna consciousness through the mercy of Lord Caitanya and Nityananda, life is simply spoiled in the animal propensities of sense gratification.

Narottama dasa says that ordinary animals can be tamed, but when a human being is animalistic, having only animal propensities, he is most horrible, for he cannot be tamed. Ordinary cats and dogs or even a tiger can be tamed, but when a human being goes out of his way and neglects to take to the human activity of Krishna consciousness, his higher intelligence will simply be misused for animal propensities, and it is very difficult to tame him. The enactment of state laws cannot make a thief an honest man-because his heart is polluted, he cannot be tamed. Every man sees that a person who commits criminal offenses is punished by the government, and also in scriptural injunctions punishment in hell is mentioned. But despite hearing from scripture and seeing the action of the state laws, the demoniac cannot be tamed.

What are they doing? Nitai na bolilo mukhe. Since they do not know who Nityananda is, they never say the names of Lord Nityananda and Lord Caitanya. Majilo samsara-sukhe. Majilo means "becomes absorbed." They become absorbed in so-called material enjoyment. They don't care who Lord Caitanya and Nityananda are, and therefore they go deep down into material existence. Vidya-kule ki koribe tar: if one has no connection with Nityananda, and if he does not come to Krishna consciousness, his vidya, or his so-called academic education, and kula, birth in a high family or great nation, will not protect him. Regardless of whether one is born in a very big family or nation or has a very advanced academic education, at the time of death nature's law will act, his work will be finished, and he will get another body according to that work.

Why are these human animals acting in this way? Ahankare matta hoiya, nitai-pada pasariya. They have become maddened by a false concept of bodily life, and thus they have forgotten their eternal relationship with Nityananda. Asatyere satya kori mani: such forgetful persons accept the illusory energy as factual. Asatyere refers to that which is not a fact, or, in other words, maya. Maya means that which has no existence but is a temporary illusion only. Persons who have no contact with Nityananda accept this illusory body as factual.

Narottama dasa Thakura then says, nitaiyer koruna habe, braje radha-krsna pabe: "If you actually want to approach the association of Radha-Krishna, you must achieve the mercy of Lord Nityananda first. When He is merciful toward you, then you will be able to approach Radha-Krishna." Dharo nitai-carana du'khani. Narottama dasa advises that one firmly catch the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda.

Then again he says, nitai-carana satya. One should not misunderstand and think that as he has caught hold of maya, similarly the lotus feet of Nityananda may also be something like that maya, or illusion. Therefore Narottama dasa confirms, nitai-carana satya: the lotus feet of Nityananda are not illusion; they are a fact. Tahara sevaka nitya: and one who engages in the transcendental loving service of Nityananda is also transcendental. If one engages in the transcendental loving service of Nityananda in Krishna consciousness, he immediately achieves his transcendental position on the spiritual platform, which is eternal and blissful. Therefore he advises, nitai-pada sada koro asa: always try to catch the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda.

Narottama boro dukhi. Narottama dasa Thakura, the acarya, is taking the position that he is very unhappy. Actually, he is representing ourselves. He says, "My dear Lord, I am very unhappy." Nitai more koro sukhi: "Therefore I am praying to Lord Nityananda to make me happy." Rakho ranga-caranera pasa: "Please keep me in a corner of Your lotus feet."

Don't Serve Your Senses, Serve Krishna

Since time immemorial we have been serving our material senses in one body after another body in the cycle of birth and death again and again looping the 8,400,000 species loop. Such foolishness has gotten us nowhere. We get a little bit of instant gratification, but because of this we remain in a hellish, nightmarish deathlike state. Those who are actually intelligent know better than this. They know that by engaging their senses in the service of the master of the senses, Hrisikesha, they can achieve an exalted state of eternal consciousness far, far beyond the multitudinous sufferings of this most rotten material existence.

Question: Will I Go to Hell When I Die?

Hare Krishna!

Please accept my humble obeisances,
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
All glories to You!

I have two questions about chanting japa/following 4 regulative principles and hell.

1. If I chant at least 16 rounds of japa every day and follow the 4 regulative principles excluding the following items:

1) occasionally eat some pastry containing eggs and other foods containing gelatin, rennet, onions and garlic
2) occasionally observe women with lust
3) occasionally consume chocolate products (rarely also coffee and Coca Cola)

Will I go to hell when I die?

2. If I am not able to chant 16 rounds every day, but follow the 4 regulative principles excluding the mentioned items, is there a lower minimum of rounds of japa to chant every day, so I will not go to hell when I die?

The purpose of this question is to find a solid reference point for my spiritual practice, because currently there is no reference point of motivation for my spiritual practice that I understand.

Thanking You in advance!

Kind regards,
J.D.

Answer: Get Out of this Nasty Place As Soon As Possible

If you cannot fully absorb yourself in Krishna consciousness in this lifetime, you can pick up where you left off in your next lifetime. For example, if you become 75% pure in this lifetime, you have only 25% left to go in your next lifetime. You don’t have to start from scratch, from zero. Whatever spiritual advancement you make in this lifetime is your permanent asset.

But why not try to finish your business now? It’s just like when one goes for passing stool, he eliminates all of his stool. It’s not that he passes half of his stool and saves the rest for later because he is attached to it. No, because stool is dirty, he wants to eliminate all of it as soon as possible.

So my best advice to you is that you should right now give up all of your bad habits and become a pure devotee so that your going back to home, back to Godhead is assured at the time of death when you pass out of your present body. Otherwise you don't know what kind of difficulties you may have to face in your next lifetime. Chant Hare Krishna, be happy, and get out of this nasty place as soon as possible. This should be your motto.

Lord Caitanya's Movement is the Ultimate Adventure

To participate in Lord Caitanya's sankirtana movement for the deliverance of all the fallen souls of this world back to home, back to Godhead is the ultimate adventure, the most relishable of all nectars. Therefore devotees who share Lord Caitanya's mood of compassion for the lost souls suffering in the cycle of birth and death beg Him for the mercy of being fully absorbed in assisting Him in His most sublime world deliverance mission. They are even prepared to take birth after birth in this material world for the deliverance of the bewildered souls, if this is what the Lord desires.

Question: How to Engage My Occupation in Krishna's Service?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have a question. In Bhagavad-gita 18.46 Lord Krishna says:

yatah pravrttir bhutanam
yena sarvam idam tatam
sva-karmana tam abhyarcya
siddhim vindati manavah

"By worship of the Lord, who is the source of all beings and who is all-pervading, a man can attain perfection through performing his own work."

I wish to learn from you that as an engineering student, how can I worship Krishna through my work/studies? I have the idea that I can worship Krishna only through the nine forms of devotional activities: sravanam, kirtanam visnoh, smaranam, etc. Can you please provide me the guidelines regarding how we are supposed to worship Krishna by our occupational duty?

Awaiting your enlightening response. Thanking you in anticipation.

Your servant,
Sushant Kulkarni,

Answer: Join Our Monthly Donor Program

As a student you can arrange for me to give Krishna conscious lectures on your campus when I come to Pune twice a year. And once you begin working and earning you need to join our monthly donor program. Occupational duty means earning money, which is very much needed to push forward the Krishna consciousness movement. Therefore we have our monthly donor program for anyone who would like to follow Krishna’s order to engage their work in His service. This is real love, to give service to the Lord by our work. Anyone who feels inspired to dovetail their job with Krishna should write to me personally at sda@backtohome.com in this regard and we will instruct them how they can do wonderful, meaningful service for Krishna through their occupational duty.

The Pure Devotee Wants to Deliver All Souls

The pure devotee of Lord Sri Krishna wants to deliver all of the souls who are entangled in the cycle of birth and death here in this material world back to home, back to Godhead. It pains him greatly to see their helpless plight. Therefore being full of compassion for them he is willing to do whatever it takes to restore them to their original home in the spiritual world, even if he has to take birth after birth in this material world to do so. Thus there is no one more dear to Lord Sri Krishna than such a pure devotee. Nor will there ever be anyone more dear. Those of us who are still struggling to conquer over our material desire would do well to learn from the selfless example of such pure devotees and thus make our spiritual lives perfect.

Answer: We Do Not Mind Going to Hell

For your information we do accept Jesus as the son of God and as our savior. Insofar as going to hell is concerned, because we are following the path of pure devotion as taught by Jesus Christ we are already living in the kingdom of God. But if God so desires, we do not mind going to go to hell to save those foolish hypocrites who talk big about religion but yet continue to engage in all kinds of sinful activities such as eating innocent animals even though the Bible orders us not to kill.

Blessed With the Supreme Good Fortune

There is no greater good fortune than being blessed with the seed of pure devotion to Lord Sri Krishna. Even if you were able to possess all the wealth of this entire material world, it would not compare with an insignificant portion of the supreme perfection, pure Krishna bhakti. And since Krishna is the owner of everything, when you possess Krishna by dint of your full surrender at His transcendental lotus feet, you then factually possess everything. This means that you will then have the right to engage the entire world in the service of Krishna.

According the essence of all Vedic wisdom, the Bhagavad-gita, it is very clear that Krishna is the Supreme because everything and everyone, including even Lord Shiva, who exists is nothing more than His manifested energy.

Being the source of all existence, Krishna is actually unborn. But for a pleasure pastime, like a player on the stage, although He is the father of all living beings, in loving reciprocation with the intense devotion of His dear devotees, Vasudeva and Devaki, He appears in this world playing the role as their son.

Question: Finding Krishna in a Remote African Village?

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I have two questions I hope you wouldn't mind answering:

1. We hear there are no material impediments to Krishna consciousness. That in mind, how would someone 1000 years ago, living in a remote village in Africa be able to obtain Krishna bhakti if they so desired?

2. From the Mahabharata we hear about many foreign sounding creatures (monstrous demons, intelligent man-like monkeys, etc.). What has happened to these creatures that does not enable us to see them anymore?

Thank you for your much needed service to the world!

Your servant,

Answer: Krishna Sends Guru

If someone 1000 years ago in a remote African village was ready for pure devotion to Lord Krishna, Krishna would have a sent a spiritual master there to enlighten him.

Because of the resultant reaction of unlimited sinful activities in this most materialistic age of Kali the physical prowess of all the living beings has been very much diminished.

Appreciate the Devotees While They Are Here

In this material world of birth and death everyone has an allotted life span of a certain number of years and then after the death of their body they depart for some other place in accordance with their state of mind at the time of death. The devotees also will disappear from this world at a certain point in time. Therefore while the devotees are present we should not take their association for granted. We should understand that having the association of the Lord's devotees is the greatest of all benedictions, indeed it can be rightfully described as the ultimate benediction. We should therefore take every moment of their association as the greatest treasure and always hear from them and serve them nicely in a loving mood. This is of the utmost importance because it is through our development of loving relationships with the devotees that our actual love for Krishna proportionately manifests.

Answer: You Are Krishna's Eternal Servant

You are an eternal spiritual being who, due to misuse of your minute independence, fell into this material existence where you have been suffering for millions of lifetimes. By the evolutionary process of transmigration of your soul through the 8,400,000 species of life you have now attained the human form of life, which gives you the rare opportunity to get out of the cycle of birth and death and return to your original home and identity as a servant of the Supreme Lord in His all-blissful pastimes in the spiritual sky, where no one ever gets sick, old, or dies. The way to return to your original identity as the eternal servant of the Supreme Lord is take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master, who engages you 24/7 in Krishna's devotional service beginning with regularly hearing and chanting the glories of the Lord, thus guiding you exactly how to recover from the disease of material consciousness and regain your original, pure identity in the wondrous pastimes of Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: Where Does Krishna Directly Promote Bhakti?

Dear Guru-Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I have some questions related to the yoga ladder described in the Bhagavad-gita. I put them before you as follows:

After already establishing the superiority of the path of karma over the path of jñana in verses 3.8, 3.18, 5.2 and 6.1 why does Lord Krishna again delineate the step-by-step ascension in the 18th chapter beginning from karma and rising to jñana (18.49 to 18.54) ?

I have learned in yoga-ladder classes that we should rise to the stage of bhakti directly from the stage of karma, bypassing the stages of jñana and dhyana. My question is that is there any verse which talks about this point? I think that the verses 18.56 and 18.57 relate to this point, I am not sure however.

I sincerely pray to you to kindly guide me through these questions and give me a clear understanding of this science. Eagerly waiting for your enlightening answer. Thanking you.

Your servant,
Sushant Kulkarni

Answer: Bhagavad-gita 18.66

Kindly note the distinction between karma and karma yoga. Karma means to act for one's own personal sense gratification. jñana or the path of philosophical knowledge is higher than karma. However, higher than jñana is karma yoga, or acting in Krishna consciousness.

Just because Krishna describes something once does not mean that He cannot describe it again. Srila Prabhupada says, "Repetition of something is necessary in order that we understand the matter thoroughly, without error." So when Krishna repeats something it is for our benefit.

Lord Sri Krishna clearly states in Bhagavad-gita 18.66 that one should give up everything else and simply fully surrender unto Him.

Question: Is a Living Guru Required for Initiation?

Did Srila Prabhupada ever say that we have to take diksha (initiation) from a living guru? And did Srila Prabhupada on 9 July 1977 set up a system of 11 representatives who would initiate new devotees as disciples of Srila Prabhupada?

Roman

Answer: Don't Take a Guru in the Air

Sometimes we hear it said that one can achieve spiritual perfection by accepting as one’s spiritual master a guru who has physically departed from this material world. The argument we hear is that all you have to do is carefully study his books and follow them to the best of your ability, that this will be just as good as if you surrendered unto him in his personal presence. Although on the surface this sounds like a very reasonable proposition, when we minutely analyze the details of this approach to the guru/disciple relationship this becomes an obvious impracticality.

This impracticality was confirmed by my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. At the end of a lecture he have gave in London, England on September 3, 1971 the following conversation ensued:

Indian Lady: How does one contact the spiritual master? Through a book can you contact the spiritual master?

Srila Prabhupada: No, you have to associate.

Shyamasundara: "Can you associate through a book?" she asked.

Srila Prabhupada: Yes, through books, and also personal. Because when you make a spiritual master you have got personal touch. Not that in air you make a spiritual master. You make a spiritual master concrete.

Srila Prabhupada made it very clear that although one can associate with a spiritual master through his books, personal association is also required, not that simply in the air one takes a spiritual master. Why is it important to have this personal contact with one’s spiritual master? It is essential to have direct personal interaction with one’s guru so that one can make sure that one is actually satisfying the spiritual master by one’s attitude, one’s words, and one’s actions.

Satisfaction of the realized spiritual master is the secret of success in spiritual life. So we have to assuredly know without any doubt that we are pleasing him. If we simply read books and imagine that the spiritual master is pleased with us, our imagination can be wrong. We could be thinking, acting, and speaking in ways that are very much displeasing to him. Without his personal association we would not know for sure whether he is pleased or not.

In May of 1977 Srila Prabhupada met with ISKCON’s leaders and instructed them that after his departure the new devotees would be the disciples of his disciples. In other words, his disciples were to become initiating gurus and have their own disciples. Then as his health deteriorated on July 9 1977, he named eleven of his disciples who would act as his representatives to initiate new devotees as his (Srila Prabhupada’s) disciples while he was still on this planet. Because Srila Prabhupada was very ill he had to let these eleven handle all of the aspects of initiating the new devotees, who would then be Srila Prabhupada’s disciples. And then just prior to his departure from this world, on 18 October 1977, Srila Prabhupada implemented the system that he had described in May of 1977. He ended the ritvik system of having these eleven representatives initiating the new devotees as his disciples and began the system that now his disciples would become the spiritual masters of their own disciples. As per Srila Prabhupada's order, this is the system that is now in place in ISKCON today. The new devotees accept one of Srila Prabhupada's disciples as their initiating guru and have Srila Prabhupada as their grand spiritual master. Just like you have a father, and his father is your grandfather, in a similar way, you have a spiritual master, and his spiritual master is your grand spiritual master (param guru). Srila Prabhupada said that just as the grandfather is more affectionate than the father, similarly the grand spiritual master is especially affectionate to his grand disciples. In this way the new devotees who join ISKCON get the extra special mercy of Srila Prabhupada and do not miss out in any way on receiving his mercy.

However, in order for him to be successful in revolutionizing the world he must first revolutionize his own consciousness by unflinchingly fixing his mind on Krishna 24 hours a day. In other words, he has to be the revolution that he wants to make. In this way he will be fully empowered for bringing a new era of Krishna consciousness to this deeply troubled world.

Answer: You Need Transcendental Association

To become satisfied in loving relationships you need to center your life around those who will properly and fully reciprocate with your love. I am referring to Lord Krishna, the spiritual master, and the pure devotees of Krishna. Materialistic people are by their very nature selfish. Therefore they are never able to properly and purely reciprocate your love. Wishing well to others means desiring that they become Krishna conscious. The devotee naturally wishes well to all of the conditioned souls in this material world, but unless they become Krishna conscious they are not able to reciprocate that love.

Cooperate With Devotees

Since time immemorial, when each of us fell into this material world, we've all maintained a stubborn, non-cooperative, independent mood. This is why we remain stuck here in the cycle of birth and death. We do not want to cooperate with Krishna and His devotees. This is just the opposite of the wonderful cooperative mood that is going on eternally in the spiritual world. The beauty of the Krishna consciousness movement is that it affords us the opportunity to lay aside our tendency towards independence and work together cooperatively with the ISKCON devotees to make Lord Caitanya's movement a grand success. This will empower us to awaken our dormant Krishna consciousness and also to awaken the dormant Krishna consciousness that is presently sleeping within the hearts of all the fallen, conditioned souls of this world.

Question: Can Krishna Be Both in One Place and Everywhere?

Reading Katha-Upanishad, I encounter lines that describe the Lord in a contradictory manner. For instance, the verse 1.2.21:

asino duram vrajati, sayano yati sarvatah
kastam madamadam devam mad anyo jñatum arharti

“Sitting, He moves to all distances. Lying down in one place, He goes everywhere. Except to the blessed ones, like me, who has access to Him, He is not known, this God of gods who enjoys and yet does not enjoy, who is the subject as well as the object, who is within and without.”

I do not understand the expression "Lying down in one place, He goes everywhere." What does it mean? Why do the Upanishads describe the Lord by such contradictions?

Your servant,
Parama-udara das

Answer: That is His Absolute Omnipotency.

Krishna can be localized in one place doing a particular activity and at the same time be doing an infinity of things. This is His inconceivable omnipotency. His ability to do this is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gita 13.16 as follows:

"The Supreme Truth exists outside and inside of all living beings, the moving and the nonmoving. Because He is subtle, He is beyond the power of the material senses to see or to know. Although far, far away, He is also near to all."

Accept Krishna's Invitation

Sometimes a foolish child runs away from home in a mood of rebellion against his parents. The result is that he suffers like anything trying to somehow or other survive while living out on the street. In this situation he unnecessarily struggles through so many difficulties. However, if he becomes a little intelligent, he realizes what a foolish mistake he has made and he accepts the loving invitation of his parents to return home.

This example describes our situation in this material world. Out of a foolish mood of rebellion we have run away from our home in the kingdom of God to try to enjoy separately from Krishna here is this miserable material world. Therefore Krishna is lovingly urging us to come back home, back to Godhead so that we can become truly happy and peaceful once again and remain that way for all of eternity. Now it is up to us to be intelligent enough to accept His invitation. But if instead we declare that God is dead, it is rather we who are dead, at least virtually, not God.

Question: Isn't It Wrong to Use Wisdom As a Weapon?

Wisdom should never be used as a weapon, but as a way to show Krishna's loving mercy. Don't you agree? Correct this little fool otherwise, please.

Humbly,
Your sincere student and servant.

D.

Answer: Krishna Says That It Is Not Wrong

I do not consider you to be a fool. I consider you to be a great soul. But you do require some further education in this matter. So please accept my humble service of educating you according to the teachings of Krishna in the Gita.

Wisdom is the weapon that we use to destroy ignorance, which is the greatest enemy of the living being. This destruction of ignorance is the greatest loving mercy. Therefore in Bhagavad-gita 10.11 Lord Sri Krishna says:

tesam evanukampartham
aham ajñana-jam tamah
nasayamy atma-bhava-stho
jñana-dipena bhasvata

"To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy
with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance."

If you dislike comparing wisdom or knowledge with a weapon, kindly consider these words of our beloved Lord Sri Krishna in Bhagavad-gita 4.42:

tasmad ajñana-sambhutam
hrt-stham jñanasinatmanah
chittvainam samsayam yogam
atisthottistha bharata

"Therefore the doubts which have arisen in your heart out of ignorance should be slashed by the weapon of knowledge. Armed with yoga, O Bharata, stand and fight."

I hope that this matter is now cleared up and that your ignorance is now destroyed by the shining weapon of Krishna's transcendental wisdom.

Wisdom Is the Ultimate Weapon

Sometimes it is said that the pen is mightier than the sword, and this is certainly a fact. Another way of saying this is, "Wisdom is the ultimate weapon." History has certainly proven this. Empires come and go as wars are won and lost, but true wisdom lives on forever beyond the realm of political upheavals creating cultures that continue for thousands and even millions of years.

At the present moment we are making a humble attempt to conquer the world through wisdom. The modern materialistic culture is so much out of balance with nature that it is turning this planet into more and more of a hell every day. People don't realize who they are. They have no idea where they have come from and where they are going, and thus they are in a great state of chaos and confusion. Therefore we are engaged in a war of information: truth versus ignorance. We want to bring to human society back to actual sanity, peace, and happiness by the wide scale dissemination of the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna.

We are requesting you to now fully dedicate your life for assisting us in the most essential mission. Your life will be glorious and you will be known as one of the key players who helped bring about the greatest paradigm shift in human history.

Request: Please Accept Me As Your Student

I am drowning in the cycle of birth and death. I have tried many times to find happiness and if I did, it was just a band aid solution, a temporary fix and it starts all over again, not happy, not sad, just existing, breathing, waiting for a different emotion to kick in and that was life. I am 62 yrs old now and as I look back over the years, its all the same pattern. Not really living at all.

I humbly and respectfully beg you to take me under your wing as your lowly servant and student, please, teach me to awaken my eternal spiritual identity so I may serve Krishna and make Him happy. I humbly beg you so I may also serve you, please teach me.

a lowly aspiring servant,

N.I.

Answer: You Are Welcome

You are welcome to take shelter of me and become my disciple. Simply you have to take the instructions of the spiritual master as your very life and soul and fully dedicate yourself to pleasing him by obeying his instructions in all times, places, and circumstances with all of your thoughts, words, and deeds.

Beyond Egalitarianism: Stick to Your Duty for Krishna

Srila Prabhupada very nicely describes in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 3.35 the importance of sticking to one's own prescribed duty:

"One should therefore discharge his prescribed duties in full Krishna consciousness rather than those prescribed for others. Materially, prescribed duties are duties enjoined according to one's psychophysical condition, under the spell of the modes of material nature. Spiritual duties are as ordered by the spiritual master for the transcendental service of Krishna. But whether material or spiritual, one should stick to his prescribed duties even up to death, rather than imitate another's prescribed duties. Duties on the spiritual platform and duties on the material platform may be different, but the principle of following the authorized direction is always good for the performer. When one is under the spell of the modes of material nature, one should follow the prescribed rules for his particular situation and should not imitate others. For example, a brahmana, who is in the mode of goodness, is nonviolent, whereas a ksatriya, who is in the mode of passion, is allowed to be violent. As such, for a ksatriya it is better to be vanquished following the rules of violence than to imitate a brahmana who follows the principles of nonviolence. Everyone has to cleanse his heart by a gradual process, not abruptly. However, when one transcends the modes of material nature and is fully situated in Krishna consciousness, he can perform anything and everything under the direction of a bona fide spiritual master. In that complete stage of Krishna consciousness, the ksatriya may act as a brahmana, or a brahmana may act as a ksatriya. In the transcendental stage, the distinctions of the material world do not apply. For example, Visvamitra was originally a ksatriya, but later on he acted as a brahmana, whereas Parasurama was a brahmana but later on he acted as a ksatriya. Being transcendentally situated, they could do so; but as long as one is on the material platform, he must perform his duties according to the modes of material nature. At the same time, he must have a full sense of Krishna consciousness."

Nowadays there is a tendency in the name of egalitarianism to ignore the importance of the varnashrama system in which everyone serves Krishna in harmony with their psychophysical natures. This egalitarianism has created havoc in the peaceful functioning of the human society. Therefore the Krishna consciousness movement wants to re-establish varnashrama, the division of work according to one's nature, to bring a peaceful atmosphere to this planet so that people can easily and happily awaken their dormant Krishna consciousness.

Guru for the Whole World

On a morning walk in Mayapura, West Bengal, India in January of 1976 Srila Prabhupada very wisely stated:

"What you have heard from the authorities, if you speak, you repeat that, that is real speaking. Then prthivim sa sisyat: then you'll be guru for the whole world, if you don't manufacture."

Therefore, for our Krishna consciousness movement to be successful, we must always be very careful not to manufacture some new idea which is not given in the scriptures or not given to us by Srila Prabhupada. In this way if we strictly stick to what we have heard from authorities, we will be successful in making the entire world Krishna conscious.

On the other hand, if we deviate from the order of the spiritual master, we will be useless and the pure form of the Krishna consciousness movement will be finished. This is confirmed as follows in the Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 12, Verse 10 as follows:

acaryera mata yei, sei mata sara
tanra ajña langhi’ cale, sei ta’ asara

"The order of the spiritual master is the active principle in spiritual life. Anyone who disobeys the order of the spiritual master immediately becomes useless."

Therefore we must always be very careful to strictly follow the instructions given to us by our beloved Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Question: Offer Food to Krishna or to the Spiritual Master?

Krishna says, “He who is a devotee of My devotee is actually My devotee.” But He also says that if one offers Him a leaf, a flower, fruit or water with love and devotion, He will accept it. How to understand, when does Krishna accept services directly and when through His devotees?

Gintare

Answer: Offer to Krishna by Offering to the Spiritual Master

Srila Prabhupada taught us to offer food to Krishna by offering it to Him via the transparent via medium of the spiritual master. So, offering with love and devotion to Krishna means offering to Him in the way that He likes, by offering it to Him through offering it to the spiritual master. Therefore the system is to always serve Krishna by serving His devotees. This is how we directly serve Krishna. If we try to bypass the devotees to serve Krishna, He will not accept our service. This is why Srila Prabhupada says that our service to Krishna is simultaneously direct and indirect. In other words, we directly serve Krishna when we serve Him through His devotees. If we try to bypass His devotees and serve Him directly, we are not serving Him at all. Is this clear?

Be Your Real Self and Taste Unlimited Bliss

All you have to do to taste unlimited bliss at every second is to be your real self. Stop causing yourself unlimited misery by trying to be that material body, which is not really you. It is only a garment being worn temporarily by your eternal, all-blissful, all-cognizant real self which dwells within. Trying to be that which you are not only leads to despondency and despair, while learning to be what you truly are is the genuine pathway to the highest stage of spiritual enlightenment.

Question: Are My Parents God?

People say that parents are God. Please answer me how far it is true.

Amit M.

Answer: If They Own and Control the Entire Universe

If your parents own and control everything in the universe and they manifest bodies that do not get sick, old, or die, they are God. If your father has to and had to work in order to earn a living and he does not have the body of a 16 years old youth, he is not God.

Our Mission: Save the World From Going to Hell

At the present moment the human civilization is in a downward spiral becoming increasingly more and more degraded with each passing year. Therefore the mission given to us by Srila Prabhupada and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu is to save the world from going to hell. We must take this mission most seriously for the deliverance of theses poor fellows back to home, back to Godhead. This Krishna consciousness movement is their only and last hope for having peace and happiness on this planet.

Request: Blessings to Flood Brampton With Prabhupada's Books

Hare Krishna, Srila Gurudeva

Please accept my humble obeisances at your feet.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I really like the change you made to the daily Thought for the Day. The email in the inbox shows your name, and Video for the Day is wonderful. Now we get to see and hear from you everyday. Very few devotees get this great fortune. I'm very happy about it.

So far the devotees in Toronto were going on sankirtana every month either door-to-door in winter or street sankirtana as a team. Starting this year, we have three different teams that have emerged: Scarborough, Mississauga, and Brampton. Radhamohan Prabhu and Shyamamohini Mataji who organize the sankirtana outings throughout the year, asked me and my wife, Govindamohini, to start a new team in Brampton. We would like to seek your blessings so that we can flood all of Brampton with Srila Prabhupada books!!

your insignificant servant,
Hemanga Das

Answer: May You Be Unlimitedly Blessed to Spread this Movement

By organizing and going out for the distribution of Srila Prabhupada’s books you are doing the greatest service for Lord Sri Krishna and for the suffering humanity. Therefore please take the massive distribution of Srila Prabhupada’s books as the most urgent necessity for the salvation of the suffering humanity. May you be unlimitedly blessed in your mission of spreading the Krishna consciousness movement, and may you be highly successful in blessing everyone in Brampton, Ontario, Canada with the topmost mercy of Srila Prabhupada’s books.
