Today's Thought:

You've Got Nothing to Lose

Fully surrender to Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, right now. You've got nothing to lose except for the oceans of anxieties that have tortured you for millions of lifetimes. Is there any reason for you to foolishly hang on to the source of all your sufferings for millions of lifetimes. Kick out all the dirt from your heart right now and fully surrender to Lord Sri Krishna. You'll be glad you did. It will be the greatest decision that you've made for millions and billions of lifetimes.

Question: Do Terrorists Go Back To Godhead?

Esteemed Guru, what happens when individuals perform suicide attacks like the one that took place in the Belgium airport, pronouncing the names of God and most probably thinking of Him at the time of death? Do they reach some special spiritual planet as it is proclaimed by the Muslims?

Regards,
David Aparicio Zambrano

Answer: Terrorists Go to Hell

A person who loves God naturally loves all of God's creatures. Such politically motivated persons who use the name of God for their own hateful, heinous, political purposes have not a pinch of love of God. Therefore they are not able to remember God at the time of death. They will surely suffer very severe karmic reactions in the hellish regions for each and every one of the murders that they committed.

Today's Thought:

Save Yourself and Save the World

In Krishna consciousness our modus operandi is very simple: Save yourself and save the world. The more you bring your senses under control by engaging them in the service of Krishna, the more you become powerful for having a Krishnizing effect upon the world. This is why it is said that one pure devotee can deliver the entire universe. So, if every member of the Krishna consciousness will sincerely endeavor to become a 100% pure devotee of Krishna as soon as possible, very quickly the Krishna consciousness movement will be able to take over the world ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity for all.

Question: Destination of Military Men?

What is the destination of army and police personal who die doing their duty? Such death is considered very heroic in this world. Do they get any special mercy of Krishna when many of them are breaking the regulative principles, such as meat eating and drinking alcohol? These are very common in the army and in the police.

Should devotees join the army or the police? What type of careers should grihasthas choose?

Aspiring to be servant of your servant,
Gopal

Answer: That Depends on Their Consciousness

Army and police are like anyone else. If they die thinking of Krishna, they will go to Krishna, otherwise they will take birth again here in this material world

The devotee's only real occupation is to serve Krishna 24 hours. In order to maintain his body while he is engaged in Krishna’s service he may accept whatever occupation is most practical for him, while avoiding grossly sinful occupations like being a butcher.

Today's Thought:

Auspicious and Inauspicious

If something is auspicious, do it immediately. And if something is inauspicious keep postponing it and postponing it until it finally does not happen at all. Auspicious means that which is pleasing to Krishna and inauspicious means that which is not pleasing to Krishna. If you will follow this principle strictly, your life will be perfect and upon leaving your present body you will become one of Krishna's intimate personal associates in the spiritual world.

Question: Qualification for Entering Goloka Vrindavana?

Hare Krishna,

Dandavat pranam. I am not very clear with concept of how a person can reach Goloka Vrindavana. From my reading of Bhagavad-gita, initially I understood that only a person who thinks of Krishna, at the time of death, will certainly attain Goloka Vrindavana. It seems to me that, our goal is to attain perfection in terms of developing pure love for God and attaining unalloyed devotional service, which would help us remember Krishna at the time of death. Does that mean, in the process, we will purify ourselves, and become good hearted sinless human beings, free from material attachment, or do they count as additional criteria to reach Godhead? So, what is the destiny of a sincere devotee, who practices other forms of religion, but has developed love for God? Does the true Christian or Muslim have to be reborn as Krishna conscious devotee, in order to reach Goloka Vrindavana, if he couldn't think of God at the time of death? In a nutshell, is the criteria to reach Goloka Vrindavana perfection in devotional service, being sinless, detachment from material world, or a combination of all? I appreciate your time in clarifying my doubt.

Thanks,
Hari bol,
Boopa Nandhini

Answer: Pure Devotee Always Thinks of Krishna

Attaining pure love of God and thinking of Krishna at the time and death are the same because if you don’t have pure love of God, you will still have material attachments and you will think of something material at the time of death instead of Krishna. One who is perfect in devotional service is naturally sinless and completely detached from this material world.

Those who have developed pure love of God in awe and reverence attain other planets than Goloka Vrindavana in the spiritual world where the Supreme Person is worshipped with great awe and reverence in one of His four-armed Vishnu forms. Anyone who eats meat, such as the vast majority of Christians and Muslims, is not qualified to enter the spiritual world. Because of their attachment to tasting blood and flesh they will take birth again here in this miserable material world as animals to be killed and eaten just as they killed and ate so many animals. Someone may argue that they did not kill the animals they ate. But, by paying someone to kill the animal, they are also guilty of killing the animal, just as an accomplice to a murder is considered in a court of law to be guilty of murder.

Tune In, Turn On, and Bliss Out

If you want to enjoy genuine happiness and not be a miserable fool like 99.99% of the world population, you need to tune in, turn on, and bliss out. Tune in to Krishna. Question: Authenticity of ISKCON's Books?

As devotees, what tangible assurances do we have that Srila Prabhupada's words remain unchanged by ISKCON? For example, in my copy of the Bhagavad-gita As It Is there was a revision that took place in 1989, 12 years after His Divine Grace left this material world. I feel in my heart that Srila Prabhupada is a bona fide spiritual master. But I don't trust ISKCON. Please help release my doubt!

Sincerely,
Wes

Answer: They Purely Present Srila Prabhupada's Teachings

It is our duty to purely present Srila Prabhupada’s teachings to the world so everyone can attain true happiness.

In the early days of ISKCON Srila Prabhupada only had a few followers, and even though they were new to Krishna consciousness and very young he engaged them in helping to produce his books. Sometimes even a guest who was not a devotee was engaged in helping out. For example, there was a boy name Neal who wanted to do volunteer work for a non-profit organization and who chose ISKCON. He just happened to be a typist. So he was engaged in typing out Srila Prabhupada’s dictation tapes for the Bhagavad-gita. On the dictation tape Srila Prabhupada mentions the planet of the Pitris, the forefathers. Neal didn’t know anything about this. He thought Srila Prabhupada was saying the planet of the trees. So even Srila Prabhupada did not say the planet of the trees, this mistake was printed in the original Bhagavad-gita. Instead of planet of the forefathers, the planet of the trees was printed.

So, as responsible publishers the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust has corrected this and other errors made by the editors who should have caught their mistakes. So the conclusion is that Srila Prabhupada’s book have not been changed. Rather the mistakes made by the young inexperienced editors have been undone to put Srila Prabhupada’s books back to what Srila Prabhupada was actually saying.

Therefore you can read Srila Prabhupada’s books with confidence that they are connecting you with actual teachings of Srila Prabhupada.

Today's Thought:

The World Situation Will Deteriorate More and More

In London on July 9, 1973 in a room conversation with sculptor David Wynne, Srila Prabhupada made this prediction:

"At the present moment, the world situation is not very good. And it will deteriorate more and more if they do not take to Krishna consciousness or God consciousness."

And we can see how truly prophetic are his words. In the last 43 years since Srila Prabhupada made this prediction the world society has not yet adopted Krishna consciousness as their guiding principle in life and the world situation has indeed shockingly deteriorated. And it will continue to get worse and worse until the people wise up and take to Krishna consciousness as their only hope for genuine happiness. When that golden day comes this world will become like a paradise. So may that day come soon. May that day come soon!

How can I carry out this mission to save the world, since I have no power to convince people?

Answer: Serve Those Who Have the Power to Convince

If you have no power to convince others, you should assist those who do have the power to convince others. In this way you will get the same benefit that they receive of being recognized by Lord Caitanya for pushing forward His most glorious sankirtana movement. The easiest and most effective way of doing this is to distribute Srila Prabhupada's books to everyone that you meet. In this way you will be directly assisting Srila Prabhupada in his world deliverance mission.

Don't Be a Dead Man

Why would you want to be a dead man suffering in the modes of material nature when you could instead be swimming in an ocean of transcendental bliss at every minute? This is common sense. Unfortunately due to massive global ignorance people don't realize that they have a choice. Hence they continue suffering the threefold miseries perpetually in the cycle of birth and death until by the grace of guru and Krishna they become awakened from their slumber.

Question: Lost My Job. How to Conquer Depression?

Today I have lost my job. I am in depression. Please guide me how to come out of my depression.

Thanks and regards,

Amit Gupta,
New Delhi, India

Answer: Fully Surrender to Guru and Krishna

Your depression is caused by your false sense of independence, not from having lost your job. Someone who has taken complete shelter of Krishna is always fully happy in all conditions of so-called happiness and distress. Since you have not yet surrendered to Krishna by following His order that you should take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master, it is quite natural that you will be depressed. Therefore you must now give up your so-called independence by fully surrendering to guru and Krishna. If you will do this, depression will never touch you ever again.

Today's Thought:

We Can Solve All the World's Problems

As evidenced by the recent terror attack in Brussels, the world situation is deteriorating more and more, becoming ever-increasingly more hellish and chaotic. But it does not have to be this way. There is indeed a positive alternative for all of this madness. We can solve all the world's problems if the world's leaders will only agree to hear from us, take instructions from us, and carefully and sincerely follow our instructions. But the difficulty is that they are way too proud of themselves, thinking that they are very great in spite of their total disqualifications to properly guide the human society. So we will continue with our duty as spiritual teachers by continuing to present our books and teachings as much as possible to everyone that we meet with the hope that somehow someday the entire world will heed and follow the most sublime teachings of Lord Caitanya. When that day comes it will mark the beginning of the most sublime unprecedented era of peace and happiness that the world has ever known.

Question: How to Become More Personal With Krishna?

Dear Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances. May the dust of your lotus feet be always on my head. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I feel that my relationship with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is incomplete. I meditate on Him as my Lord and best friend, but usually I don't feel Him to be close. He is rather like my imagination friend. I don't talk to Him much. I don't hear His voice. But I believe He watches me and guides me in my life. Also I believe He speaks to me through your lips and in the Bhagavad-gita.

So, how to become more personal with Krishna?

With love,
Kaspars

Answer: Obedience

Your question is very nice. Thank you for asking such a nice question.

Becoming more personal with Krishna means to feel His presence more and more, how He is coming closer and closer to you until that supremely wonderful and most sublime moment when you finally meet Him face to face, eye to eye. This ever-increasing closeness comes naturally for one who is trying his level best to be fully obedient to every instruction of Guru and Krishna in all times, places, and circumstances. In one word the simple, direct answer to your question is: obedience.

Today's Thought:

How to Become 100% Selfless

Since time immemorial when we entered into this material world to try to enjoy separately from Krishna we have been foolishly clinging to a false sense of being the center of enjoyment. In other words we have been totally selfish. Our egotistical attitudes have not brought us genuine happiness. Indeed, they have simply made us more and more miserable. Even after having heard from bona fide scriptures and from great spiritual masters that this selfishness is the cause of all our miseries and accepting this as true, we still stubbornly and foolishly cling to this false conception that we are the center of enjoyment. The fact is that it is very, very difficult for us to become completely pure, 100% selfless. But this seemingly impossible task can be easily accomplished if we take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master dutifully and enthusiastically accepting all of his instructions as our very life and soul.

Question: No Taste for Chanting

I don't know why I have a taste for listening to the Srimad Bhagavatam lectures but no taste for kirtan, the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra. I usually get disturbed whenever I hear kirtana, and I just want to run away from the place. I know that this is wrong. Please guide me how to overcome this.

Your servant,
Sumeet

Answer: You Will Lose Your Taste for Krishna Consciousness

If one is only attracted to the knowledge of Krishna consciousness and is not attracted to practicing it by chanting Hare Krishna, in due course of time he will lose his attraction for Krishna consciousness and fall back down into material existence. So you can intelligently analyze whether you would like to go back to Godhead or remain in the cycle of birth and death and then do what is required to be where you want to be. The beginning stage of chanting Hare Krishna is compared to a person who is suffering from jaundice and is instructed by his physician to take sugar candy because it is the cure for jaundice. If one has jaundice, sugar candy tastes very, very bitter. But still one takes it on the order of his physician. In this way, by taking the sugar candy, in spite of its bitterness, it gradually regains its natural sweetness as the patient is becoming cured. So if you want to become cured of your material disease, you need to regularly chant Hare Krishna in spite of its apparent bitterness so that you can awaken your dormant taste for Krishna's name and thus become fully qualified for going back to home, back to Godhead.

Today's Thought:

Realizing the Self Within

Recently one of our subscribers dropped out of our e-course. The reason he gave is that the search for what is within is best carried out in silence. But if silence is the key for unlocking the higher truth within, why did he break silence by telling me why he is dropping the course? If he truly believed in silence, he would have silently dropped out without saying a word.

Regarding realizing the truth within, any attempt to realize this higher truth by practicing silence (mauna-vrata) will always fail because the mind by its very nature is always active. Both the illusioned material mind and enlightened spiritual mind within are always active. Some say that within is the state of no mind, but this is fallacious. There is no such state. Your mind will either be material or spiritual. It never becomes non-existent. This is why any attempt to turn off the mind will always be futile. The solution then for attaining the liberated state of awakening the within is to absorb the mind in transcendental sound vibrations which originate in the world within. These amazing vibrations are infused with a healing potency to bring you back to your original pure state of enlightened consciousness within. There are thousands of such mind-delivering mantras mentioned in the ancient Vedic literatures. These mantras have been chanted throughout the ages to bring their chanters back to their pure state of consciousness. Out of all these mantras one mantra is especially singled out as the mahamantra, the great chanting for deliverance, for this present most materialistic age. That mantra is as follows:

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare

Anyone who regularly and sincerely chants this Hare Krishna mahamantra will personally experience the reawakening of their original, eternal, all-blissful, all-knowing nature within. Therefore we want to teach everyone all over the world to chant this mantra, to bring an immediate solution to all of the world's problems both individually and collectively.

Appearance Day of Lord Caitanya

Today we are unlimitedly blessed because today is the transcendental appearance day of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who is none other than the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna Himself appearing in the form of His own devotee. We offer our most humble respectful obeisances unto Him and Lord Nityananda with the following most auspicious prayer:

vande sri-krsna-caitanya-
nityanandau sahoditau
gaudodaye puspavantau
citrau san-dau tamo-nudau

"I offer my respectful obeisances unto Sri Krishna Caitanya and Lord Nityananda, who are like the sun and moon. They have arisen simultaneously on the horizon of Gauda to dissipate the darkness of ignorance and thus wonderfully bestow benediction upon all."
Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila 1.2

It is not possible to even begin measuring the unlimited extent of our good fortune that we have come into contact with Lord Caitanya's sankirtana movement, because such contact is tantamount to directly meeting God face to face. Therefore let us not waste our unlimited good fortune by holding on to even the slightest tinge of material sense gratification consciousness. Let us all dive now into the unfathomably deep ocean of Lord Caitanya's mercy immersing ourselves fully in Krishna consciousness and in spreading Lord Caitanya's movement into every town and village and heart all over the world in fulfillment of the prediction given in the Caitanya Bhagavat:

prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

"In as many towns and village as there are all over the world this Krishna consciousness movement will be spread."

There is truly no more glorious life than this!

Question: How Was Hare Krishna Composed?

I am very happy imagine that you actually met Prabhupada. :) I have a picture of him in my office downtown. I love so much the Hare Krishna mantra, the vibration of it. It is one of the greatest musical compositions of all times. Did Prabhupada ever mentioned how/ when he composed it?

Hare Krishna.
Luis

Answer: It Comes Directly from Krishna Himself

Yes, by the unlimited mercy of Lord Sri Krishna I had to opportunity to personally meet Srila Prabhupada. I had a private one-on-one meeting with him in 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia. Plus I corresponded with him often and have as my greatest treasure many letters that he wrote me guiding me in many aspects of my spiritual life.

Although Srila Prabhupada popularized the Hare Krishna mantra making it known throughout the world, he did not compose it. It is coming from Krishna Himself and has come down to us in the modern age through the ancient system know as disciplic succession. It is recommended in the Kali-santarana Upanisad, in the Brahmanda Purana, and in the Vayu Purana. It was popularized 500 years ago all over the India by Krishna Himself appearing incognito in the form of His own devotee, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And it has now been popularized all over the world by my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada.

Today's Thought:

Krishna, the Absolute Substantive Principle

Lord Brahma states in verse 41 of Chapter 5 of his Brahma-Samhita:

maya hi yasya jagad-anda-satani sute
traigunya-tad-visaya-veda-vitayamana
sattvavalambi-para-sattvam visuddha-sattvam-
govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami

"I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who is the absolute substantive principle being the ultimate entity in the form of the support of all existence whose external potency embodies the threefold mundane qualities, namely, sattva, rajas, and tamas and diffuses the Vedic knowledge regarding the mundane world."

This reminds of us of the term used by Christian theologian Paul Tillich who said that God is the “ground of being itself”. He saw God as the ground upon which all beings exist. According to him, God precedes “being itself.”

Although Tillich failed to understand God as a person, he at least had some correct ideas about the impersonal aspect of God. It's a fact that nothing exists, not even being itself, without Krishna's support. So we should just now try to understood more and more how we are totally, completely, absolutely dependent on Krishna or God both for all of our material necessities as well as for our very existence itself as spiritual beings.

Question: Bhaktisiddhanta Knew English?

Srila Gurudeva, please accept my obeisances
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Conversing among devotees a doubt arose if Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati and Bhaktivinoda Thakura knew the English language. We know that Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati gave a commentary on the Brahma-samhita that is available in English. Was it written in Hindi or Bengali by him and then put into English by a translator, or did he directly write it in English? So far as I know the British educational system had not yet been established in India during the time of these two great personalities.

We thank any hint in this regard,
Your servant, Indriyesa das

Answer: English Better than Native Speakers

In 1835 the Council of India passed the English Education act to establish English education in India. This and other measures led to English becoming one of the languages of India, rather than simply the native tongue of its foreign ruler. Bhaktivinoda Thakura was born in 1838 three years after the English Education Act was passed, and he composed many Vaisnava writings in the English language. His son Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura did the same. Both of these great Vaisnava acaryas desired to spread Krishna consciousness to the English speaking world. And both demonstrated a knowledge of English superior to that of many native English speakers.

Begging for Srila Prabhupada's Mercy

My Dear Srila Prabhupada,

Please accept my humble obeisances in the dust of your divine lotus feet.

You have us left with an unimaginable mission. You have instructed us to deliver the entire world. This seems quite impossible because we have a hard enough time delivering ourselves and even a harder time working together co-operatively as a unified worldwide ISKCON. So how is it possible that we can successfully carry out the order you have given to us to deliver the whole world? It almost seems like a dream.

But it can happen, and indeed it will happen because it is predicted in the Caitanya-caritamrita that the entire world will someday be inundated with pure Krishna bhakti. How will it happen? It will only happen by our sticking tightly to all of your instructions accepting them as our very life and soul. Then and only then will your full world-delivering potency be manifest through us. Therefore, Srila Prabhupada, we are begging this boon from you that in all times, places, and circumstances with all of our thoughts, words, and deeds we can now be fully absorbed in following your instructions to the absolute very best of our abilities. This will save us and anyone who follows us. And indeed, simply by our being fully obedient to you, Srila Prabhupada, that brilliant, effulgent day will dawn in the future when all the world’s leaders will accept your teachings as the ultimate guiding principle for the entire human society. May that day come soon. May that day come soon.

Can I be initiated as a disciple for Srila Prabhupada even though he departed from this world in 1977 almost 40 years ago?

S.R.

Answer: Become a Disciple of Prabhupada's Disciple

Being a disciple of Srila Prabhupada means following the instructions given by Srila Prabhuapda. Since he instructed that after his departure the new devotees should take initiation from his disciples, if you want to truly follow Srila Prabhupada, you must take initiation from one of his authorized disciples.

Identity Therapy

Nowadays there are so many types of therapy available in the wellness marketplace: hand therapy, back therapy, trauma therapy, over-eating therapy, depression therapy, marriage therapy, chemotherapy, vocal therapy, occupational therapy, sound therapy, enzyme replacement therapy, massage therapy, cobalt therapy, cold compression therapy, and the list goes on and on and on. Practically every day somebody is dreaming up a new kind of therapy. But still everyone is unhappy and unhealthy. This is because the world is not adopting the most important therapy of all: identity therapy, the healing process of becoming re-established in one's original and factual identity as the eternal servant of Krishna. At the present moment the world is tortured by ever-increasing chaos, because nobody knows who they are. Identify crisis is running rampant as a global epidemic. Therefore the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has been started to provided the ultimate therapy, identity therapy, which will bring everyone back to their original natural consciousness and in one stroke solve all of the world's problems.

Question: Harassed by My Co-Worker

Dear Gurudeva,

As you stated in your answer on 18 March 2016, that we should not desire for honor or try to get honor, how to react when somebody backbites/ dishonors or denigrates us for example in the eyes of boss or work place team or makes fun of us because of their ulterior motives to extract advantage? Such is widespread in the present materialistic environment.

Currently I am countering with the argument that if they want honor /respect for themselves then they should give it same to us/me etc. And I keep reminding them so that they don’t play game.

If I don’t do the above, then I will fall prey to them, and if I do the above then I may not progress in Krishna consciousness. This is my anxiety. Please enlighten me.

Thanks.

Answer: Teach to Them to Give Up Their Misbehavior

Once upon a time there was a cobra who became a devotee of Narada Muni. Before he became a devotee he was the cause of great fear for the villagers. But when he became a humble devotee he was no longer a threat. So some naughty children took advantage of his humility and used to harass him with sticks. He became distraught not knowing what to do, and thus he approached his spiritual master for guidance. Narada then told the cobra that whenever the children come to harass him, he should expand his hood and raise his head up as if prepared to strike, but that he should not bite them. He said the sight of this would scare the children away. By following his spiritual master's advice he was able to remain a humble devotee and at the same time not be harassed. In a similar way, if a devotee is being harassed because of his humility, he should make a show of strength in order to deter those who are harassing him. Therefore your instructing your co-workers is very good. Our Krishna consciousness mission is to train the entire world how to come to proper standard of behavior.

Pure Devotee Spearheads Ultimate Revolution

There is no one more powerful and influential in this world than Krishna's pure devotee. By his every thought, word, and deed in all times, places, and circumstances he spearheads the ultimate revolution, the re-spiritualization of the entire human society. In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 7, Text 83:

"A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles given by the spiritual master. When the holy name is properly served in this way, automatically the spiritual nature of the holy name spreads; in other words, the devotee becomes qualified in offenselessly chanting the holy name. When one is completely fit to chant the holy name in this way, he is eligible to make disciples all over the world, and he actually becomes jagad-guru. Then the entire world, under his influence, begins to chant the holy names of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra."

Therefore there is nothing more favorable both for one's own personal benefit and the benefit of all living beings in this material world than to master the art of offenselessly chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra.

Question: I'm Attached to Honor--What to Do?

Srila Prabhupada says that anyone who is attached to honor is a kanistha adhikari, a materialistic devotee. But I'm attached to honor. So what to do?

Tom

Answer: Give Honor Instead of Trying to Get It

What you should do is this: Give all honor and respect to Lord Krishna and His devotees without desiring any for yourself. In this way you will be able to chant the holy names of Krishna constantly with ever-increasing bliss and thus attain the stage of unlimited happiness, pure love God. So why torture yourself any longer? Instead of trying to get honor, you must master the art of giving all honor to Krishna and His devotees. In this way you will become the most honored person in all the three worlds.

Be a Spiritual Revolutionary?

Are you disgusted with the world situation? Are you heartbroken that 50 million innocent children are being murdered every year in the abortion clinics and that ten billion animals are slaughtered for food every year? Does it bother you that the entire human civilization is engaged in such grossly sinful activities that practically everyone is going down to the animal kingdom in their next birth? Do you find it to be disconcerting that people are being forced unnecessarily to work so hard and for such long hours that there is hardly any time left for them to cultivate spiritual awakening? If your answer is "yes" to any of the above questions, then you, my dear reader, are not meant to be an ordinary worker. Tom

Answer: Confident in Krishna's Inconceivable Potency

Christ said, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” This is a fact. The more you become humble, the more you become empowered by Lord Sri Krishna to perform herculean tasks. This is proven by analyzing the histories of the great saints throughout history. In other words, instead of proudly thinking that you are the doer and accomplishing a few puny things, you allow yourself to be an instrument through which Lord Krishna can accomplish the most incredibly amazing things like defeating millions of enemies on the battlefield of Kurukshetra or building a bridge across the India Ocean to Sri Lanka.

Question: Why Pure Devotee Does Not Desire Liberation?

Srila Prabhupada writes in the Nectar of Devotion that by practicing devotional service devotees don't even desire for getting the four types of liberation from the Supreme Lord in the spiritual world. If this is so, then how will the conditioned souls in the material world who are practicing devotional service gain eternal life in the spiritual world by the mercy of the Supreme Lord to serve the Supreme Lord eternally because all the devotees final aim is to have loving eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord in the spiritual world? Kindly explain why the pure devotee doesn't ask for liberation from the Supreme Lord and why most of the devotees want to eternally associate with the Supreme Lord in the spiritual world.

Hare Krishna
Veerendra Ekbote

Answer: He's Already Liberated

The desire to go back to Godhead is good for the neophytes to help them focus their minds on Krishna in order to escape from this world of miseries. However, the fully realized devotees are already liberated and thus intimately associating with Krishna at every minute even while they are still in this material world. This is why they don’t need to go back to Godhead to get Krishna’s association.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 8.15:

"The mahatmas receive transcendental messages from the realized devotees and thus gradually develop devotional service in Krishna consciousness and become so absorbed in transcendental service that they no longer desire elevation to any of the material planets, nor do they even want to be transferred to any spiritual planet. They only want Krishna and Krishna's association, and nothing else."

The conclusion is that the pure devotee is constantly associating with Krishna either in the material world or in the spiritual world.

Atheism is Patent Dogmatism

According to atheist philosophy everything comes out of nothing. But there is not one shred of empirical evidence to confirm that it is possible for anything to come out of nothing. Therefore, it is patent dogmatism. To the contrary, all empirical evidence establishes just the opposite principle. Everything we experience comes from something, which comes from something, which comes from something, back, back, back to that original something from which everything has come. So we can logically, scientifically understand that existence, therefore, must also have a source. It is not sourceless as the atheists loudly proclaim. What is the nature of that source can be analyzed later, but through simple logic we can deduce the dogmatic absurdity of atheistic philosophy.

Tom

Answer: As Close as You Can

Personally I would sit as closely to Srila Prabhupada as I could whenever he gave a lecture. In this connection the word "Upanishad" (as in the 108 Upanishads) is very significant. It is literally "upa-ni-sat" which means "sit closely" and refers to the disciple sitting closely beside his guru in order to receive transcendental Vedic wisdom. So the disciple should always try to get as close to his spiritual master as he possibly can to serve him with love and to inquire from him. The spiritual master will then allow him whatever degree of closeness is appropriate at his current level of Krishna consciousness. He gives more closeness to those who are more advanced and is also naturally very kind to those who are sincerely seeking his merciful guidance.

Pure Krishna bhakti is the ultimate drug. It is so powerful that even one drop of it can inundate the entire universe drowning all of its inhabitants. In this connection it is stated in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya Lila, Chapter 2, Text 49:

Question: Why Pure Devotees Suffer?

Srila Gurudeva, in the Bhagavad-gita it is mentioned: "...a person in Krishna consciousness who eats only food offered to Krishna can counteract all reactions of past material infections, which are impediments to the progress of self realization." Does past material infections refer to our past karma? If it does, then how is it that pure devotees, who take only prasadam, suffer because of some diseases and other miseries? Please enlighten this fallen soul.

Answer: Their Suffering is Only Superficial, Not Factual

This infection is the contamination of consciousness. It is karma, the cumulative effect of so many sinful activities committed in the past.

In the material world even the bodies of pure devotees get sick, old, and die because that is the law of material nature. However, this does not mean that they are suffering karmic reactions. In spite of so many apparent sufferings, the pure devotees are always tasting the highest happiness of Krishna consciousness within their hearts. In other words, their suffering is only superficial. Answer: To Rectify Our Crooked Mentality

We were all originally with the Supreme Lord in His eternal kingdom before we fell down into this miserable material world. So why did we fall? He has endowed us all with free will so that we have the capacity to either love Him or leave Him. In other words, love cannot exist unless there is free will. Otherwise we are just robots. Since all living beings have the choice to love Him or leave Him, sometimes some of the living beings, in their attempt to enjoy the greatest happiness, make the foolish mistake of trying to imitate God rather than lovingly serving Him. When this happens they are given the facility to do this here in this material world where they are also given the facility to rectify their deviant mentality and return, under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master, to their original position in the spiritual world.

The best way to deal with anger is to dedicate your whole life for making the world Krishna conscious and to tolerate whatever difficulties you personally experience along the way as simply another part of your purification.

In other words, anyone who is not angry to see how badly the world society is being misled right now is a blind fool. We should be sad and angry to see how badly the animals and human beings are being exploited at the present time. So all of our anger should be channeled into Lord Caitanya’s movement for the respiritualization of the entire world society. We should not be angered by whatever happens to us, seeing that whatever difficulties we personally experience are a minimization, by Krishna's special mercy, of what we deserve according to our past karma. A devotee never thinks that he is great. He always considers himself to simply be insignificant. But he knows that he has been blessed with the greatest message that has ever been given in the history of the universe, a message so potent that it will go down in history for having saved the world. That message is the Bhagavad-gita as it is. Therefore he fully dedicates his entire life's energy for awakening the sleeping souls of this planet to the liberating message of the Bhagavad-gita. For whatever success he has in his missionary activities he does not take the credit. Rather he gives all credit to his spiritual master and Lord Sri Krishna. In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya Lila 16.67 as follows:

"Although the Lord wants to give all credit to His devotee, the devotee himself never takes credit, for he acts only under the Lord's direction. Consequently all credit goes to the Lord. This is the nature of the relationship between the Lord and His devotee. The Lord wants to give all credit to His servant, but the servant does not take any credit, for he knows that everything is carried out by the Lord."

By keeping this proper mood of giving all credit to Krishna, the devotee becomes empowered with Krishna sakti, the divine potency of the Lord, for performing amazingly heroic activities in the service of the Lord.

A devotee is never offended by any amount of ill words or ill treatment that he may receive from another because he sees that these are simply the reactions for his own previous impious activities. The devotee sees that the person who is supposedly mistreating him is in actuality doing him a favor by delivering his karmic reactions to him and thus freeing him from them. Instead of manifesting hatred to the so-called offenders the devotee wishes them well. This is why when Jesus Christ was being crucified, he prayed to Krishna to forgive the Roman soldiers who were nailing him to the cross. We can learn much from Christ's perfect example of compassion, tolerance, and forgiveness, how to never feel offended in any situation.

Question: Why Chant the Hare Krishna Mahamantra?

If the word "Krishna" is more powerful than "Rama" and "Hare," why don't we just chant "Krishna Krishna Krishna" all the time?

Is there a reference of Lord Chaitanya chanting the Hare Krishna mantra? Everywhere I look in Caitanya-caritamrita, it just says chant Krishna!

Tom

Answer: For Unlimited Benefit

Even though the name of Krishna is, according to the revealed scriptures, three times more powerful than the name of Rama, when we chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra,

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

the names of Krishna and Rama become unlimitedly powerful. Therefore there is more benefit in chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra than in just chanting the name of Krishna by itself.

There are tons of references to substantiate that Lord Caitanya chanted the Hare Krishna mahamantra. Here are a few:

"Lord Caitanya appeared in order to fulfill these confidential desires, and also to preach the special significance of chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare and to answer the call of Advaita Prabhu."
--from Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 4

"When Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya asked the Lord which item was most important, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu immediately answered that the most important item is the chanting of the holy names of the Lord -- Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare."
--from purport to Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya Lila, 6.241

"In the age of Kali the Lord incarnates as a devotee, yellowish in color, and is always chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. "
--from Teachings of Lord Caitanya, Chapter 8

So now free from all doubts engage yourself fully every day chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and your life will become unlimitedly sublime.

Unlimitedly Blessed by Srila Prabhupada

In 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia USA I was unlimitedly blessed to be sitting directly at the lotus feet of my most beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, one morning in the temple room when he taught us a melody for the most wonderful bhajan (devotional song), Sri Sri Gaura-Nityanander Daya--The Mercy of Sri Gaura and Nityananda, by Locana Dasa Thakura. I was also very fortunate to be able to record it on my cassette recorder. That recording is now here available for your transcendental enlivenment and enlightenment.

parama koruna, pahu dui jana
nitai gauracandra
saba avatara-sara siromani
kevala ananda-kanda

The two Lords, Nitai-Gauracandra, are very merciful. They are the essence of all incarnations. The specific significance of these incarnations is that They introduced a process of chanting and dancing that is simply joyful.

bhajo bhajo bhai, caitanya nitai
sudrdha biswasa kori
visaya chadiya, se rase majiya,
mukhe bolo hari hari

My dear brother, I request that you just worship Lord Caitanya and Nityananda with firm conviction and faith. If one wants to be Krishna conscious by this process, one has to give up his engagement in sense gratification. One simply has to chant, "Hare Krishna! Hari Hari!" without any motive.

dekho ore bhai, tri-bhuvane nai,
emona doyala data
pasu pakhi jhure, pasana vidare,
suni' janra guna-gatha

My dear brother, just try and examine this. Within the three worlds there is no one like Lord Caitanya or Lord Nityananda. Their merciful qualities are so great that upon hearing them even birds and beasts cry and stones melt.

samsare majiya, rohili poriya,
se pade nahilo asa
apana karama, bhuñjaye samana,
kahoye locana-dasa

But Locana Das regrets that I am entrapped by sense gratification. Since I have no attraction for the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda, then Yamaraja, the superintendent of death, is punishing me by not allowing me to be attracted by this movement.

Carefully study and enter into the spirit of this song and your life will be unlimitedly sublime.

I want to know why God tests people who are good by heart and humble by nature and God-fearing. Mostly such people suffer but those who are culprits and doing sin in name of God they are enjoying life like anything.

Answer: Godly People Become Free From All Suffering

Whatever suffering God's devotees undergo in this world is all His special mercy upon them to help them come to their senses and realize that this material world is not their real home, that their real home is with Him in the spiritual world. In other words their difficulties are actually their best friend to help them quickly attain the spiritual world, where there are no difficulties at all, not even birth, death, old and disease.

Beginners on the path of devotion to God are sometimes confused when they see that demoniac people are enjoying life while God's devotees suffer. But in this connection it should clearly understood that the demoniac are simply burning off and exhausting the results of whatever pious deeds they have done in the past. As soon as they have exhausted their good karma they will be plunged into the most hellish, nightmarish conditions of life. God's devotees are going to an eternal, blissful life in the spiritual world while the non-devotees will be suffering like anything in the cycle of birth, even if they seem to be temporarily enjoying.

To learn more about how through the amazing science of Krishna bhakti you can become completely free from all the miseries of material existence. I think that you will enjoy my free e-course. You can sign up at www.joincourse.com.

Ten Principles for Advancing in Krishna Consciousness

If you will follow these ten principles given by Srila Rupa Goswami, you will advance steadily in Krishna consciousness:

(1) Accept the shelter of the lotus feet of a bona fide spiritual master.
(2) Become initiated by the spiritual master and learn how to discharge devotional service from him.
(3) Obey the orders of the spiritual master with faith and devotion.
(4) Follow in the footsteps of great acaryas (teachers) under the direction of the spiritual master.
(5) Inquire from the spiritual master how to advance in Krishna consciousness.
(6) Be prepared to give up anything material for the satisfaction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna (this means that when we are engaged in the devotional service of Krishna, we must be prepared to give up something which we may not like to give up, and also we have to accept something which we may not like to accept).
(7) Reside in a sacred place of pilgrimage like Dvaraka or Vrindavana.
(8) Accept only what is necessary, or dealing with the material world only as far as necessary.
(9) Observe the fasting day on Ekadasi.
(10) Worship sacred trees like the banyan tree.

Therefore take advantage of this clearly defined process and quickly regain your lost loving relationship with Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: Reciprocation With Devotees and Krishna?

Srila Gurudeva, I have a question regarding reciprocation among devotees. Does our reciprocation depend on the give and take theory? That is, if one is calling, sending messages, and sharing realizations with other devotee, only then other devotee will share Krishna conscious things? Or it should not be like that? How should I understand this? And what kind of reciprocation should remain among devotees? And among them on what basis should this reciprocation depend? Also, how should I take this statement, "According to our surrender, Krishna reciprocates"? Does this means Krishna does not reciprocates with those who are not surrendered?

Please enlighten this fallen soul.
Thank you!!

Your unworthy servant,
Nandapriya devi dasi

Answer: Krishna Gives Full Facility to Everyone

Reciprocation with devotees is described by Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita 10.9:

mac-citta mad-gata-prana
bodhayantah parasparam
kathayantas ca mam nityam
tusyanti ca ramanti ca

"The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me."

So you should find amongst the lady devotees those who are eager to follow this instruction of Lord Krishna and engage with them regularly in talking about Krishna from many different angles of vision.

Krishna reciprocates with everyone. He rewards those who always want to remember Him with full facility to remember Him, and blesses those who want to forget Him with full facility to forget Him.

Krishna, the Life and Soul of the Brijabasis

Srila Prabhupada wonderfully describes in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 3.2.28 how Krishna was the life and soul of the inhabitants of Vrindavana, the Brijabasis:

"Child Krishna did not belong only to His parents, Nanda and Yasoda; He was the son of all the elderly inhabitants of Vrindavana and the friend of all contemporary boys and girls. Everyone loved Krishna. He was the life and soul of everyone, including the animals, the cows and the calves."

The more that we absorb ourselves in such Krishna consciousness by always hearing about, talking about, remembering, praying to, and serving Lord Sri Krishna, the less we will feel the pinches of the material nature. Therefore we should dive deeply into the sweet mellows of Krishna consciousness at every minute. In this way, if we diligently practice Krishna bhakti, for us the material world will become as good as the spiritual world.

Question: Consciousness a Link Between Soul and Mind?

Can we call consciousness a connecting link between our soul and our mind?

Golok Das

Answer: Krishna Consciousness, Original Pure State of Mind Mind

The material mind is a covering of the pure Krishna consciousness of the soul. This is why we must engage the mind in chanting Hare Krishna. In this way the material mind is transcendentalized and reverse engineered back into the original pure Krishna conscious mind.

No Time for Anything Else

Live your life in such a way that there is no room for maya or illusion anywhere within your 24 hours, 7 days a week. Have so many things that you are doing and want to be doing for Krishna that 24 hours daily is just not enough time to get them all done. For example, Srila Prabhupada gave us the order to deliver the entire world. That one order alone is enough to keep us fully busy in Krishna's service for our entire lives with no time for anything else.

Question: Proper Way to Inquire from the Spiritual Master?

Hare Krishna.
My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances
All glories to you and Srimati Gurumataji
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Srila Gurudeva, I was once told by a devotee that it is offensive and thus better not to ask questions from your spiritual master if you feel you might get a different answer than what you expected and an instruction that you may not be able to follow. Is this true? If this is so, then where is the point of surrender to the spiritual master.

Gurudeva, please enlighten this fallen soul.

Thank you!!

Answer: In a Mood of Full Surrender

You were intelligent to doubt this absolutely ridiculous advice. This is like saying that I will only go to a physician if he gives me candy, that I will not go to him if he is going to give me medicine. With such a mentality one will never be cured of his material disease. He will remain caught up in the cycle of birth and death. To be successful in spiritual life we must sometimes accept those things that we do not want to accept and reject those things that we would rather not reject. This is how we make advancement. This foolish neophyte devotee is advising you to take a guru like you would keep a pet dog, that your guru should surrender to you, not that you have to surrender to your guru. Such a so-called guru-disciple relationship is completely useless. Therefore we only take instructions from those who can guide us properly along the pathway of pure devotion, not foolish speculating neophytes like this. The advanced, highly qualified devotees are known as siksa gurus (instructing spiritual masters), and their guidance is absolutely essential for achieving the supreme perfection of pure Krishna bhakti.

Always Be Loyal to Your Spiritual Master

Krishna is more interested to see how much you are dedicated to your spiritual master than how much you are dedicated to Him. Therefore if you want to be successful in your attempt to go back to home, back to Godhead at the end of this lifetime, you must remain staunchly dedicated to your spiritual master. If you neglect or try to bypass your spiritual master considering him to be an ordinary man, your spiritual life will be ruined. Your attempt to attain the spiritual world will be a complete failure. Therefore you should always maintain complete faith in your spiritual master, accepting his instructions as your very life and soul. This dedication to your Guru Maharaja will keep you packed up tightly in the fortress of his divine association in all times, places, and circumstances. Such a position is as good as being in the spiritual world with Lord Sri Krishna.

Question: How Do We Measure Our Spiritual Advancement?

In today's Weekly Lesson you have mentioned that if a person completes one percent in spiritual life he will continue from 2 percent in his next life. I have heard this quoted by Srila Prabhupada also. My question is: How do we understand this percent? How do I know how much percentage I have completed to date? Thank you very much.

Answer: How Much Detached from Material Sense Gratification

You can understand the degree of your advancement in Krishna consciousness by how much you are feeling detached from material sense gratification.

Step on the Head of Anxiety

The most liberating thing in the world is when we understand what is the root cause of all of our anxieties. We foolishly tend to consider the external situations to be the cause of our anxiety: "I'm not making enough money," "People don't treat me properly," "My health is no good," etc. But nothing could be further from the truth. The actual cause of all our miseries is simply our lack of Krishna consciousness. When anxiety attacks all we have to do is take complete shelter of Krishna and then the anxiety will immediately disappear. So what appears to be anxiety is actually the greatest blessing because it is a powerful impetus for us to take complete shelter of Krishna. This is why Queen Kunti prayed that she can be blessed with more and more anxiety. She realized that more anxiety means more Krishna consciousness. So the next time you have an anxiety attack step on the head of your anxiety by using it to enhance your Krishna consciousness and thus increase your transcendental bliss.

Question: Focus Only on Krishna's Name While Chanting?

While chanting should we only focus on hearing the sound of Krishna's name? Or if we occasionally think of the deity, would it become an offense?

Kumara G.

Answer: Everything is There in Krishna's Name

While absorbing the mind in the sound of Krishna’s name one may sometimes think of the deity of Krishna, the pastimes of Krishna, the teachings of Krishna, the devotees of Krishna, etc. Even though these are nice transcendental thoughts one should bring his mind back to the sound of Krishna’s name because in the age of Kali it is through the sound of Krishna’s name that we get the strongest connection with Him. The Vedic injunction is:

harer nama harer nama
harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva
nasty eva gatir anyatha

"In this Age of Kali there is no other means, no other means, no other means for self-realization than chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name, chanting the holy name of Lord Hari.”

Kindly note that here it is specifically stated, "harer nama," that one should focus on Krishna’s name. The injunction does not state, "harer rupa," to meditate on the form of the Lord, or "harer lila," to meditate on the pastimes of the Lord. The insider’s secret in this connection is that within the sound of Krishna’s name all His forms, pastimes, and devotees are present. Therefore one who dives deeply into Krishna’s name automatically relishes all His forms, pastimes, and devotees.
