Today's Thought:

You've Got to Be Yourself

Don't try to be what you are not, namely your material body. Just as you cannot be your jacket, no matter how hard you try, you cannot be your body. It is just not possible. But this is what the most ridiculous material society trains you that you are supposed to do. They train you to try to be your body. Therefore it's no small wonder that so many millions and billions of people are bewildered and confused. The Krishna consciousness movement offers perfect relief to the suffering humanity by providing scientific knowledge of what is the actual self and how to revitalize it.

Question: Are Karma Yoga and Buddhi Yoga Pure Bhakti?

Srila Gurudeva, in the Bhagavad-gita Sri Krishna mentions many stages on the ladder of yoga: karma, jñana, astanga, and bhakti. When one remains on karma and jñana stages and is unable to move to bhakti yoga or pure devotion, what will help him to achieve devotional service? Are karma yoga or buddhi yoga pure devotional service ?

What determination should be taken so that one can move forward on the ladder to the ultimate perfection of life and achieve pure devotional service.

Your servant
Premananda Das

Answer: Karma Yoga Is Not; Buddhi Yoga Is.

It is very easy to attain pure devotional service. Simply you must be the completely sold out servant of your spiritual master. This means that you accept as your very life and soul whatever instructions that he gives you.

In his purport to Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 10, Verse 10 Srila Prabhupada clearly describes karma yoga and buddhi yoga:

"When a person knows the goal of life but is addicted to the fruits of activities, he is acting in karma-yoga. When he knows that the goal is Krishna but he takes pleasure in mental speculations to understand Krishna, he is acting in jñana-yoga. And when he knows the goal and seeks Krishna completely in Krishna consciousness and devotional service, he is acting in bhakti-yoga, or buddhi-yoga, which is the complete yoga. This complete yoga is the highest perfectional stage of life.”

To attain pure devotional service you should have the determination of the little sparrow who was so determined to dry up the ocean to get the eggs that the ocean had stolen from her that Garuda came to her rescue and forced the ocean to return the eggs.

Today's Thought:

Don't Cheat Yourself

By your very constitution you are meant to experience ever-increasing knowledge and bliss for all of eternity. So why are cheating yourself, relegating yourself to perpetual ignorance and misery? This does not make any sense. Come out of the cloud of illusion and awaken your dormant Krishna consciousness. You'll be glad you did. It will be the smartest decision you ever made in thousands and millions of lifetimes. Do it now. Do not delay, as it is said, "He who hesitates is lost."

Question: Should I Quit My Job?

Dear Sir,

Please accept my humble obeisances. I'm suffering with lot of stress and tension with work. Now I am completely blank with no solution to overcome this. I have faith in Krishna and His wonderful devotees like you. I am thinking of quitting my work and dedicating my time to hearing and chanting. But will I be able to sustain myself since I am married? I'm confused about my maintenance, if I quit my job. Kindly guide me. I am also prepared to work in a temple by doing any menial job.

Your humble servant

Answer: Do Your Job for Krishna

Arjuna also wanted to quit his job. But Krishna ordered him to do his job and offer Him its results. Since you are married, you must do your duty and continue working your job to provide for your family. If you will simply endeavor to do your job as best as you can, detaching yourself from the results of your work and engaging whatever results come from your work in the service of Krishna, just as Arjuna did on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, you will be able to do your job every day in a blissful state of pure Krishna consciousness. Also make sure to carefully chant at least 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala before you go to work every day. This will empower you to stay attuned to Krishna throughout your entire day.

Total Complete Freedom From Anxiety

Krishna's devotee is completely free from all anxieties because he always sees everything that happens to him as the merciful arrangement of Lord Krishna. Whether he is sick or healthy or even on his death bed, the devotee is always peaceful and happy because he has total, complete trust in Krishna to always arrange what is the best for His devotee at every minute. Thus because of his transcendental vision, the Lord's devotee is never disturbed even by the most nightmarish hellish upheavals of the material nature. Such a fully self-realized soul can bring a new era of peace and prosperity to today's greatly troubled and disturbed world.

Question: What Would I Be Without Your Grace?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Srila Prabhupada tells us through his books that we need to find a spiritual teacher. Someone who translates for us the words of the Bhagavad-gita to daily life, so that our actions are perfect. I realize especially today that you really are that. I appreciate your mercy for all creatures, your way with words. In this way, I would like to thank you.

Srila Gurudeva, what would I be without your grace?

Your servant.
Robby

Answer: Always Keep This Mood Alive Within Our Hearts

The sentiment you have expressed, "What would I be without your grace?” is very nice. In this connection Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura has prayed to his spiritual master, "Your mercy is all that I am made of.” This is the same feeling that I have for my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada. I feel that I am nothing, but that if there is anything useful about me, it is simply due to the most sublime mercy of my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, who has dragged me out material existence into the most divine world of Krishna consciousness.

If we always keep this mood alive within our hearts of complete total dependence on the mercy of our spiritual master, we will advance very quickly on the path of pure devotional service.

Today's Thought:

I Am Not God

Before I came to Krishna consciousness I was taught by various writers and teachers that I am God. I tried to follow their teaching and be God, but I found this to be impossible. It's not even logical. If I am God, then why am I suffering in this material existence? They are saying that you are God, but you have simply forgotten it. But if I am God, the Supreme Power, how could forgetfulness ever overcome me? This "I am God" philosophy does not make ay sense, while the "I am the eternal servant of God" philosophymakes all the sense in world. So instead of trying to be God, just try to be the completely sold out servant of God. This will bring you unlimited happiness.

Question: Difference Between Acknowledgement and Glorification?

I have been thinking about the glorification of Vaisnavas for the last few days. It is not an easy topic to understand for me. So I decided to write you and ask for advice. Sorry to bother you again, but I really want to master it and would like to know if there is any formula for it. How does glorification differ from acknowledgement?

Thank you:)
Your servant,

Anuradha dasi

Answer: Glorification is Magnified Acknowledgment

When acknowledgement is magnified, it becomes glorification. I may acknowledge that Krishna is God and leave it simply at that. But when I glorify Krishna, I can go on expounding for hours how He is unlimited in power, beauty, renunciation, knowledge, wealth, and fame. The same principle applies to Vaisnavas. Krishna says that if we are not the glorifiers of His devotees, we are not His devotees.

Satisfy Your Actual Self

Because your body is not you, you should not waste your life running after material sense gratification. Your body is only a garment that you are temporarily wearing. So instead of focusing your life on satisfying your garment, you should focus your life on satisfying yourself, your actual self, the spirit-soul within. This genuine soul satisfaction is perfectly accomplished by reviving your lost loving relationship with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So what are you waiting for? Do it immediately, right now. Fully surrender yourself unto Lord Sri Krishna as your only shelter. You will swim in an ocean of unlimited nectar for all of eternity.

Question: Disciple Seen as a Spiritual Master?

Can a disciple be seen as a spiritual master?

Shanmugam

Answer: Guru Accepts His Disciples as His Spiritual Masters

A spiritual master takes his disciples as his spiritual masters. He thinks, "Krishna has sent me so many spiritual masters." He does not think himself as spiritual master. He thinks himself their servant. Because his disciples have to be trained, Krishna has appointed him to train them. Therefore he thinks himself as the servant of his disciples.

The Whole World is Waiting

Even though they don't realize it, everyone in the whole world is simply awaiting that day when they can be restored to their original happy, healthy state of Krishna consciousness. For way too long, indeed for hundreds, thousands, and millions of lifetimes, they have been mercilessly tortured by the waves of the material energy. Therefore the devotees of Krishna are working very hard to awaken them. Indeed their lives are fully dedicated to this purpose.

Question: How to Apologize to God?

Dear Gurudeva,

I have offended God by my arrogant attitude. How should I apologize to Him?

Indre

Answer: Become His Devotee

All of us here in the material world have been offensive to God by our arrogance towards Him for millions of lifetimes. That’s why we’re here caught up in the cycle of birth and death. The only real solution for our countless offenses is to become His devotees and fully surrender unto Him. This and only this will deliver us from our offenses.

My 70th Birthday and the World Deliverance Mission

Today, 25 October 2016, according to the lunar calendar, is my 70th birthday. Normally the number of birthdays one passes are not of much significance or importance. But that this is Srila Prabhupada's age when he arrived in America to launch this Krishna consciousness movement makes this age most significant for me.

On 17 December 1973, Srila Prabhupada ordered his American and European disciples, of which I am one, to become perfect in the understanding of the science of Krishna consciousness, to become guru, and to deliver the whole world. I have come up far short of successfully carrying out this order, even after 45 years of preaching. This is my great sadness. Srila Prabhupada said that each of his disciples should accomplish ten times more than him. So it's now the time more than ever to really expand my preaching exponentially for the respiritualization of the human society.

Therefore on this most auspicious occasion of my 70th birthday I am humbly begging Srila Prabhupada, his predecessor acharyas, and Lord Sri Krishna that I may now become fully successful in executing the world deliverance mission that Srila Prabhupada has mercifully given to me and my Godbrothers

Question: Why Arjuna is Not Listed in Disciplic Succession?

In the disciplic succession Vedic knowledge was given by Krishna to Brahma, and he gave it to Narada, and Narada gave it to Vyasa and so on. But Arjuna's name is not included in that list. However, we know that the Bhagavad-gita was given by Krishna to Arjuna. Please clarify kindly why Arjuna is not listed in the line of disciplic succession.

Humbly yours,

Abhiram

Answer: Only a Small Portion of Gurus Are Listed

There are so many hundreds and thousands of branches and sub-branches in the line of disciplic succession that it is not possible or practical to list all of them. Therefore we have simplified the matter by merely listing that line of masters and disciples which comes down through history to our particular branch in the disciplic succession.

Spiritual Unity In Spite of Material Distinctions

Sometimes we are criticized that in our Krishna consciousness movement we make a distinction between men and women. But this is a gross misunderstanding of our movement. The great strength and liberating power of our movement is that we see the spiritual unity of all living beings and engage everyone in the service of Krishna. While on the material platform there are distinctions that facilitate our serving Krishna in different ways in accordance with our personal talents and abilities, we are unified by our working together as a family to serve the mission of Krishna. It is natural that in any organization some of the members will be leaders and others will be followers. Show me an effective organization where everyone is a leader and nobody is a follower.

One who sees the unity of all living beings will be careful not to harm even a little ant, what to speak of such beautiful, beneficial creatures as the cows, millions of whom are being mercilessly slaughtered and butchered by the insane material society, which presently kills 156 million innocent animals and 66 thousand innocent children every day.

Question: How to Develop Compassion?

I sometimes feel that the quality of my chanting has improved, but then I wonder if I'm just speculating. I have been feeling that I'm not doing anything to serve this movement or serve Prabhupada. I do some kirtana on campus and sometimes distribute a few books and start thinking that I'm doing so much. But I'm doing nothing, Gurudeva. If it wasn't for Prabhupada I would still be living like an animal, and I feel like it's my duty to try waking up others. But at the same time just having a clue of how contaminated I am, I feel, "What power do I have?"

I want to dedicate me life to your service in making the world Krishna conscious because that's what Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna want me to do. But at the same time I can see how Maya is trying to lead me the other way. How can I develop the compassion for the fallen souls and the dedication to make the whole world Krishna conscious? How can I get rid off these subtle mental forces that are constantly dragging me towards bodily consciousness?

Your insignificant servant,
Karan

Answer: Continue Serving and Preaching

Simply continue serving and preaching on the order of Guru and Gauranga. Your heart will become pure and the natural compassion within your heart for all living beings will gradually awaken.

Question: What are the Six Passions, Six Faults, etc?

My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you and to Srimati Gurumataji.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In the song "Ohe Vaisnava Thakura" by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, what are the six kinds of holy association, the six passions we need to control, the six faults to rectify, and the six qualities we are trying to develop?

Thank you so much!

Your loving daughter and unworthy servant,

Nandapriya Devi Dasi

Answer: As Follows:

The six passions are those pertaining to words, the mind, anger, the tongue, the stomach and the genitals. The six faults are overeating, attachment to material things, inability to follow regulative principles, sense gratification, useless idle talk, and impure habits. The six positive qualities are enthusiasm in practicing devotional service, firm faith in devotional processes, a strong desire to attain prema-bhakti, a favorable service attitude, avoidance of non-devotees, and appreciation of the company of devotees. The six methods of association are to go to an assembly of devotees, to invite devotees into one's home, to discuss and hear devotional topics, to take the maha-prasada of devotees and to offer maha-prasada to devotees.

Question: Can Chanting Overcome Offending a Vaisnava?

Srila Prabhupada says a few times that offending a Vaisnava is the worst thing you can do. But since the sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya of chanting the holy names of the Lord is so potent, can simply the sincere chanting the holy names overcome the sin of offending a Vaisnava?

Dahmerson

Answer: No. You Must Please the Vaisnava You Offended

Chanting alone is not sufficient to free one from the sin of offending a Vaisnava. If one pollutes his Krishna consciousness by offending a Vaisnava, one cannot revive his Krishna consciousness until he properly atones for his offense by pleasing the offended Vaisnava.

Question: Why God Wants Us to Suffer?

Please help me understand few topics.

I was reading a book, "Journey of Self Discovery", where it was mentioned that, if you become Krishna conscious, you can get rid of suffering like adhyatmika, adhibhautika, and adhidaivika. So how will I get rid of these problems? If I become Krishna conscious, I will still sometimes get diseased. Still I will be affected by terrorism and office politics. I will still face floods, earthquakes etc. Is this only applicable when I leave this body and go to spiritual world? And it was mentioned, "This material nature is constituted in such a way that we have to suffer; it is God's law." Why does God want us to suffer?

Secondly what does association mean? Do I need to go to the temple every time for association?

Please guide me.

Vishal

Answer: God Doesn't Want Us to Suffer--We Put Ourselves Here

In pure bhakti, the sufferings become completely external, like something happening in a movie. They do not pinch you. For example, even death will simply be something happening out there in the external energy. It will not touch you as you continue to dive deeper and deeper into the unlimitedly sweet mellows of Krishna bhakti.

It is not God's desire that we should suffer. We have foolishly put ourselves into a suffering condition by turning away from God. The sufferings we experience in this material existence are Krishna's special mercy to help us realize more and more that this material world is not our home.

Association means to hear, chant, and serve in the presence of other devotees. If you are always eager to spend as much time as possible at the temple whenever you get the chance, you will also be able to associate with the devotees at every minute within your heart by always remembering and appreciating their wonderful saintly qualities.

I am very happy to hear that you are follower of the path of Islam. Your prophet Mohammed is one of great teachers who fully gave their lives for giving God consciousness to the people of this world.

The key for attaining unlimited happiness is to give up all sinful activities and chant the holy names of God every day as much as possible. Just as we chant "Hare Krishna" as much as possible every you should chant "Allahu Akbar” as much as possible every day. By giving up sinful activities such as illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling and regularly calling out the name of God, you will develop pure love of God and experience unlimited happiness as every minute.

Today's Thought:

By Conquering Your Mind, You Can Conquer the World

Guru Nanak, who is described by Srila Prabhupada as being one of the great acaryas, great spiritual authorities, said, "Man Jeetai Jagjeet--By conquering your mind, you can conquer the world." This is a fact. One who becomes a perfect master of his senses by engaging them fully in Krishna' service, becomes empowered by Krishna to attract the whole world to Krishna. This is confirmed by Srila Prabhupada in the Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 7, Text 83 purport, in which he states:

"A sincere student aurally receives the holy name from the spiritual master, and after being initiated he follows the regulative principles given by the spiritual master. When the holy name is properly served in this way, automatically the spiritual nature of the holy name spreads; in other words, the devotee becomes qualified in offenselessly chanting the holy name. When one is completely fit to chant the holy name in this way, he is eligible to make disciples all over the world, and he actually becomes jagad-guru. Then the entire world, under his influence, begins to chant the holy names of the Hare Krishna mahamantra."

Therefore, for the sake of his own deliverance as well as for the deliverance of all the fallen souls of this age, the devotee should diligently strive to bring his mind completely under control by becoming an offenseless chanter of Krishna's holy name.

Take Over the World As Soon As Possible

Our number one priority right now is to take over the world as soon as possible. I am not speaking of a military or political takeover. I am speaking of an educational takeover. The entire world society is now in illusion because they have accepted a materialistic explanation of reality. Even though matter cannot move until it is touched by spirit, they insist that there is no spiritual foundation for our existence. Nothing could be more foolish or further away from the truth. Therefore to bring sanity and true happiness back to the human society we must now educate everyone as soon as possible regarding the spiritual foundation of reality.

Question: Save Ourselves or Save the World?

Dearest Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept by respects. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I especially appreciated your message today: "Help Us Save the World".

How can we save the world when we struggle to save ourselves? Is it better to preach in a fallen conditioned state or work on our own bhakti first?

Yours,
Mathura das

Answer: Do Both

We have been ordered by Srila Prabhupada to save ourselves and to save the world. So these two activities should be going on side by side. The more you save yourself, the more you will be empowered to save the world. And the more you absorb yourself in saving the world, the more you will be saved. For example, whatever you have learned about Krishna, you must share that with the entire world. When Krishna sees your enthusiasm for spreading His glories, He will give you more and more realizations about Him. In other words, you will become even more awakened in Krishna consciousness.

Sri Vrindavana Dhama, India

Today's Thought:

The Hardest Part of Coming to Vrindavana

The hardest part of coming to Vrindavana is leaving Vrindavana. This is the actual place where 5,000 years ago Krishna had His most intimate pastimes with His most confidential devotees. That same Krishna is still personally present here continuing to relish His divine pastimes. Every particle of dust here is non-different from Krishna Himself. So once having come here, how could one ever leave? It seems completely insane.

But yet because Lord Caitanya has ordered us to save the world, we therefore travel outside of Vrindavana to save the suffering souls of this world from their nightmarish entanglement in the cycle of repeated birth and death. In this way, by surrendering to Lord Caitanya's order we are living constantly in Vrindavana because we carry Vrindavana within our hearts for sharing this most sublime mood and atmosphere with everyone that we meet.

As I write these words it is 6 am on 13 October 2016. In three hours we will depart from this most sacred of all holy places. But we will be back for another super-invigorating visit in April of 2017. This thought gives us great joy.

Question: Is It Good to Ask Questions that Seem Silly?

I have been attending Bhaktivedanta Manor in Hertfordshire, UK for the past 2 years. I have been reading Srila Prabhupada's books, as well as watching lectures from many spiritual masters, and have come to have many questions. Is it good to ask questions even if they may seem silly or not full of knowledge? Should we always keep learning and asking until we feel we know enough? On this note, as I am still asking questions, can I call myself a devotee? I am not following al of the four regulations yet, but I feel this will come with time.

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Hare Krishna

Answer: Only Silly Question is the One You Did Not Ask

It is sometimes said that the only silly question is the one that you did not ask. In other words, anyone who is serious about awakening their dormant Krishna consciousness is encouraged to continue asking questions until their intelligence is fully satisfied.

There is no question of ever knowing enough. Even Lord Sri Krishna, who is the perfect of knower of everything, remains incomplete in His knowledge of Himself because His glories are expanding exponentially at every minute. Krishna is able to fully understand His glories, but at every moment, as He fully understands His glories, they have expanded exponentially again. Thus He has to constantly catch up with His understanding of Himself. In this way He is constantly growing in His Krishna consciousness.

You are eternally the devotee of Krishna. Simply you have forgotten it. Now by inquiring about your actual identity you can revive it. Because I can see that you are a very sincere soul desiring to re-establish your lost relationship with Krishna, I am sure that you can now begin to follow the four regulative principles and chant at least 16 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala daily. In this way you will qualify yourself very soon to be initiated by the bona fide spiritual master and receive your passage back to home, back to Godhead.

Question: Are ISKCON Teachers Using Scare Tactics?

My Dearest Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

In my quest to advance my spiritual knowledge and understanding, I have been looking at some other websites online. I have found some which claim to be transcribing the truths as seen by the most enlightened sages and yogis in India. Their information is almost identical to that of ISKCON except on one most important point. These saints and sages which lived in the late 1800's and early 1900's all seem to gloss over what happens at the time of death, i.e. they claim there is a brief period of sleep, followed by a period of atonement (which they gloss over) and then on to the next advanced incarnation. They also claim that there are no such places as heaven and hell, but that these are merely states of mind.

Even in Bhagavad-gita as written by Paramahamsa Yogananda which I read before coming to ISKCON, there is little or no mention of suffering after death or being forced down into the animal kingdom. As a matter of fact, he said that he could see all of the departed souls in the spiritual sky.

This is vastly different from what ISKCON teaches where the atonement is actually great suffering and 98% of the population is forced back down into the animal kingdom. My mind wonders if the ISKCON teachers are trying to scare us in order to keep us controlled? Or is it that in the 1800's people were so much more God conscious that the atonement were far less and they were much more likely to go on to higher incarnations and states of consciousness?

Please advise me!! I am quite fearful of this not only for myself but for family members and friends and all of humanity. There can only be one truth! I want to know the truth.

Your humble, unworthy servant

Answer: No. They are Presenting Bhagavad-gita Precisely As It Is.

Rest assured that Srila Prabhupada and the ISKCON preachers are not using some hyped-up tactics to scare people into surrendering to Krishna. Rather we are precisely presenting Krishna's teachings exactly as He gives them in the Bhagavad-gita. Such a pure presentation is the only thing that can actually help people to get out of the cycle of birth and death. Other types of presentations may seem more mellow and pleasing, but they actually do more harm than good because they keep people in ignorance and thus keep them bound up in perpetual cycle of repeated birth and death.

Krishna clearly states in Bhagavad-gita 14.15 that those who die in the mode of ignorance take birth in the animal kingdom. Below I am giving you the original Sanskrit, the word for word meanings, and the English translation:

rajasi pralayam gatva
karma-sangisu jayate
tatha pralinas tamasi
mudha-yonisu jayate

rajasi—in passion; pralayam—dissolution; gatva—attaining; karma-sangisu—in the association of those engaged in fruitive activities; jayate—takes birth; tatha—similarly; pralinah—being dissolved; tamasi—in ignorance; mudha-yonisu—in animal species; jayate—takes birth.

"When one dies in the mode of passion, he takes birth among those engaged in fruitive activities; and when one dies in the mode of ignorance, he takes birth in the animal kingdom."

Srila Prabhupada is unique in that he does not water down the teachings of Krishna to attract masses of cheap followers. He simply presents the teachings of Krishna exactly how Krishna has given them. We are most fortunate that Srila Prabhupada has not cheated us. Those who are more interested in getting followers than they are in purely presenting the actual teachings of God are notorious for twisting and bending the scriptures in so many ways to suit their purpose of attracting followers. Such persons who pose as spiritual masters and do not teach Bhagavad-gita as it actually is, are the greatest cheaters. The scriptures tell us that they go to darkest region of ignorance and that their followers go with them.

The Internet is full of so many such bogus so-called spiritual teachings. Therefore we always say, "Surfer, beware!" I can show you point by point with proof from the scriptures how much these so-called gurus, even the most famous and popular ones, are cheating and misleading the people. I know very well of what I speak because I was formally a student of such so-called gurus. For enhancing your spiritual knowledge you need to carefully read all of Srila Prabhupada's books cover to cover and avoid this nonsense on the Internet. If you don't have a full set of Srila Prabhupada's books, we can arrange for you to get the full set as soon as possible.

For these so-called teachers to state that there is no such thing as heaven and hell means that they are completely ignorant of the reality which is clearly revealed in the Vedic wisdom. How such ignorant fools and rascals can be accepted as spiritual masters shows us how much uninformed and gullible the general population is. This reminds me of a Hindi verse by a devotee in which he states, "The Kali-yuga is so abominable that if you speak truth, people will come with some rod to beat you, but if you cheat them, bluff them, they'll like it."

So take heed and do the needful for becoming properly situated in transcendental knowledge.

Pure Devotee Fixes the Global Consciousness

Just as by its sucking power the sun can completely dry up a large lake, Krishna's pure devotee can, by Krishna shakti, the divine empowerment which Krishna has invested in him, suck this age of Kali dry of all of its demoniac qualities and thus turn the tide of times away from its present exploitative, miserable culture of darkness into a brilliant God-centered civilization of compassion, in which everyone experiences unlimited peace and happiness at every moment of their lives. Question: Strong Faith, Low Faith, or Blind Faith. Does it Matter?

As long as one follows the teachings of Krishna, does it matter if one does it with strong faith, low faith or blind faith? If yes, what are the differences of the effect?

Your student,
Ruta

Answer: Acting Intelligently in Krishna Consciousness is the Best

For a thousand mile journey does it matter if you are walking, driving, or flying? All three are good because all three will get you there. But when it is urgent that you reach your destination as soon as possible, the fastest means is the best. Therefore strong faith is the best. Strong faith means faith based upon intelligence. Blind faith is weak because it is not based on intelligence.

Thus the best means of achieving success is buddhi-yoga, acting intelligently in Krishna consciousness. When I first came to Krishna consciousness forty-five years ago I was instructed by His Holiness Vishnujana Swami to continue inquiring until my intelligence was fully satisfied. I followed his advice, and this has made me very strong in Krishna consciousness. I therefore advise you and all of my students and disciples to do the same.

The Glories of Vasudeva Datta

Srila Prabhupada explains the glories of Vasudeva Datta:

"Vasudeva Datta was so kind to the living entities that he wanted to take all their sinful reactions so that they might be delivered by Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is described in the Fifteenth Chapter of the Caitanya-caritamrita's Madhya-lila, verses 159 through 180."

"He was the most exalted personality to ever show mercy to the conditioned souls. This is not an exaggeration of his transcendental qualities. It is perfectly true. Actually, there cannot be any comparison to Vasudeva Datta. As the perfect Vaisnava, he was para-duhkha-duhkhi, very much aggrieved to see others suffer. The entire world is purified simply by the appearance of such a great devotee. Indeed, by his transcendental presence the whole world is glorified and all conditioned souls are also glorified."

Therefore we pray for the special mercy of Vasudeva Datta that we can be delivered from this hellish material existence.

I have a question. The prayer mentions:

"Still, O beloved of the gopis, because You bestow Your mercy on the most fallen, I have an unbreakable hope that is constantly in my heart. That hope is always giving me pain."

I submissively inquire why that hope is giving pain?

Thank you for showering mercy always.

Question: Necessary to Perform the Sraddha Rituals?

In the Vedic literature it is recommended that one should perform rituals (sraddha) for one's ancestors, especially deceased parents. Otherwise ancestors will go on suffering in hell. Is it mandatory also for devotees who chant Hare Krishna regularly to perform sraddha?

Recently, an ISKCON preacher told us that even the devotees should perform sraddha as a part of varnashrama dharma. He was saying that because the neophyte devotees are not 100% pure, it is mandatory to perform sraddha, that only who has taken complete shelter of the lotus feet of Krishna, (i.e., pure devotee) he need not perform sraddha. Please enlighten me on the subject of sraddha.

Regards,
Saswata Adhikari

Answer: Not for Vaisnavas

Srila Prabhupada told us that the sraddha ceremony is not for Vaisnavas, that their only duty is to serve Krishna. When he was with us on this planet he never told us to do the sraddha ceremony. In fact he even instructed one of his disciples, who received a telegram informing him of the passing away of his grandfather and requesting his presence for the sraddha ceremony, that those who are engaged in Krishna's service have no necessity for such things. He allowed that disciple to make his own decision whether to go or not. That disciple intelligently decided not to go.

There is a tendency in ISKCON for devotees to concoct new ideas that were not taught by Srila Prabhupada. If this tendency is not checked, in a few decades the proper understanding of Prabhupada's teachings will be lost and ISKCON will simply become another nonsense pseudo religious organization incapable of teaching anyone how to go back to Godhead.

Beware of Lust

Lust or sex desire is the most dangerous enemy of the living being. When one becomes lusty he completely forgets his spiritual identity and becomes locked 100% into bodily consciousness intensely desiring the stimulation of his genitals as his only business. Such lusty consciousness is the worst of all hells because it completely kills one's Krishna consciousness. Therefore with a cool head, a thoughtful intelligent mind, one should carefully and stringently detach himself from sex desire so that he can relish the only real pleasure in all of existence, to be fully and deeply absorbed in a loving, serving relationship with Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Answer: Demon Means Inimical Towards Krishna

Demon means inimical towards Krishna. Anyone who is inimical towards Krishna consciousness possesses a demoniac mentality. Factually all living beings throughout all of existence are devotees. Simply they have forgotten it while they are temporarily covered by the material energy. When they are in the covered state of being hateful towards Krishna they are designated as demons. But by the association of the saintly devotees of the Lord, such demons will gradually regain their original natures and become devotees once again. Question: How to Serve Krishna While in Pain?

Hare Krishna, Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

I am need of your advice once again. I recently went through a very painful bodily experience, which lasted a lot longer and was a lot more painful than I expected. I managed to keep my composure and chant at first but as the pain increased I felt I was losing myself.

Also the days after that have been rough trying to chant properly and be in the happy mood I usually am in while practicing bhakti yoga. I try to be aware in those moments that I am not the body and the pain I am feeling is actually maya, but it still is very hard to maintain that thought while pain exists.

My question is, how do we continue to serve Krishna and perform our devotional duties properly while this body is in pain?

Thank you,

Your servant

Answer: Consult a Physician and Be Tolerant

If you are in pain, you need to consult a medical practitioner to treat the cause of your pain. Krishna has given you your present material body to engage nicely in His service. Therefore you must keep it always in good health as far as possible.

Of course, even with the best of medical care, pain is sometimes unavoidable. Therefore we must always be transcendentally situated beyond the pains and pleasures of our material bodies by taking complete shelter of Krishna’s holy name.

Love of Krishna is Eternal

Because Krishna is the origin of everyone and everything, love of Krishna is eternal within everyone. Therefore this love of Krishna or Krishna prema can never be destroyed or removed from anyone's heart. It is the light that illuminates and gives life to every living being. But just as a pure white light becomes colored when it shines through colored glass, our pure love of Krishna becomes manifested in the form of lust, anger, greed, etc. when it is experienced from within the three modes of material nature. Therefore just as a sick person undergoes therapy to free himself from a disease and bring himself back to his natural healthy condition, the souls who are covered by three modes of material nature must undergo the therapeutic process known as bhakti yoga to bring themselves back to their original pristine natural state of pure love of Krishna. This science of this healing process is learned from the bona fide scriptures, the bona fide saintly teachers, and the bona fide spiritual master.

The Appearance of Govardhana

Here is the history of Govardhana's appearance as described in the Garga-samhita:

Shri Nanda said: O very intelligent Sannanda, you have heard much and you know everything. We have heard from your mouth the glories of Vraja-mandala. Now please tell me about the birth of the mountain named Govardhana. Why do they call it the best of mountains and the king of mountains? From what world did the Yamuna river come? You are the best of the wise. Please explain to me its glories.

Shri Sannanda said:

One day in Hastinapura, as many people listened, King Pandu said to the pious Bhishma:

As the Original Supreme Personality of Godhead, Shri Krishna, who is the king of Goloka and the master of countless universes was about to depart in order to remove the earth's burden, He said to Radha: O beloved, O frightened one, You should also go to the earth.

Shri Radha said: My heart cannot be happy in a place where there is no Vrindavana forest, no Yamuna River, and no Govardhana Hill.

Shri Sannanda said: Then Lord Hari sent a 47 krosha portion of His own abode, along with Govardhana and the Yamuna, to the earth. (Note: A krosha equals two miles.) Worshiped by all the worlds and filled with 24 forests, that land of Vrindavana has now come to the earth.

West of Bharata-varsha, in the middle of Shalmali-dvipa, Govardhana was born from the wife of Mount Drona. The demigods showered flowers on Govardhana. Headed by Himalaya and Sumeru, all the mountains came. The great mountains bowed down, circumambulated, properly worshiped, and eloquently glorified Govardhana with these words:

In Goloka, which is filled with gopas, gopis, and cows, you are the mountain of Lord Krishnacandra, the Original Supreme Personality of Godhead. You are named Govardhana. You are splendidly manifest in the world of Vrindavana and you are the king of all us mountains. Obeisances to you, who are the crown of Goloka and who sit on Vrindavana's lap! Obeisances to Govardhana, the parasol of the Supreme Personality of Godhead!

Shri Sannanda said:

After speaking these prayers the mountains returned to their homes. For this reason Govardhana is known as the best of mountains and the king of mountains.

One day, as he was traveling to holy places, the great sage Pulastya saw Mount Drona's son Govardhana, who was filled with flowering madhavi vines, heavy with abundant fruits, filled with the sounds of gushing streams, peaceful, auspicious with many caves, suitable for performing austerities, filled with jewels, charming, wonderful with many colorful minerals, beautiful with graceful slopes, filled with many birds, deer, and nectar trees, and decorated with peacock calls, and which gave liberation for they who yearn for it.

Pulastya, the tiger of sages, approached Mount Drona and, wishing to get his son, spoke:

O Drona, you are the king of mountains. You are worshiped by all the demigods. You are filled with transcendental medicinal herbs and thus you always restore the peoples' lives. I come to you with a request. I am a great sage. I live in Kashi. Please give me your son Govardhana. I do not wish anything else. (Note: Kashi is a name of Varanasi.) The great city named Kashi is the home of Lord Vishveshvara. A sinner who dies there at once attains liberation. The Ganges flows there, and Lord Vishvanatha resides there. There, where there is no mountain, I will place your son. I will perform austerities on your son Govardhana, who is filled with trees and vines. That is my desire.

Shri Sannanda said: Hearing Pulastya's words, Drona became filled with love for his son. His eyes filled with tears, he spoke to the sage.

Shri Drona said: I am filled with love for my son. My son is very dear to me. O great sage, I fear your curse. Let me speak to him.

O son, go with this sage to beautiful Bharata-varsha, the land of karma, where the people attain the three goals of life, and even liberation, in a single moment.

Shri Govardhana said: O sage, how will you take me? I am eight yojanas long, five yojanas wide, and two yojanas tall. (Note: A yojana is eight miles.)

Shri Pulastya said: My son, please sit in my hand and I will carry you to Kashi.

Shri Govardhana said: I will stay where you place me. I will not leave that place. I promise you this.

Shri Pulastya said: As I take you from Shalmali-dvipa to the country of Kaushala I will not put you down along the way. I promise you this.

Shri Sannanda said: His eyes filled with tears, the great mountain Govardhana bowed down before his father, Drona, and then climbed onto the sage's hand. Carrying the mountain in his right hand, he showed his great power to the people. Moving very slowly, he finally came to Vraja-mandala.

Remembering his previous life, as he traveled, Mount Govardhana said to himself: Shri Krishna, the Original Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the master of countless universes, will descend to this place, Vraja, and enjoy childhood playing with the cowherd boys, and then the pastimes of youth. Here Lord Hari will enjoy pastimes of paying a toll and pastimes of jealous anger. For this reason I should not leave this place where the Yamuna flows. From Goloka Shri Krishna will come here with Radha. By seeing Him I will make my life perfect.

Thinking this in his mind, Govardhana made himself very heavy in the sage's hand. Overcome with exhaustion, the sage could not remember what had happened before.

Tormented by the mountain's great weight, to lighten his burden the sage put him down in Vraja-mandala. After bathing in the water there and becoming clean, the great sage Pulastya said to Mount Govardhana: "Stand up!" When the very heavy mountain did not stand up, the great sage grasped it with his mystic strength. Although the sage embraced him and spoke sweet words, Mount Govardhana, the son of Drona, did not move even for the space of a finger.

Shri Pulastya said: Come! Come! O best of mountains, don't make yourself heavy! Don't make yourself heavy! I know you are angry. Tell me why at once!

Shri Govardhana said: O sage, there is no fault on my part. You have put me down, and now I will never move from this place. That was the promise I made to you.

Then, abandoning his attempt (to move the mountain), Pulastya, the tiger of sages, his senses filled with anger and his lips trembling, cursed Govardhana, the son of Drona.

Shri Pulastya said: O arrogant mountain, you would not fulfill my desire! Therefore every day you will become smaller by the size of a sesame seed.

Shri Sannanda said: O Nanda, when Pulastya Rishi left for Kashi, Mount Govardhana began to shrink by the size of a sesame seed day after day. As long as the Bhagirathi Ganges is present, and as long as Mount Govardhana is present, the power of Kali-yuga will not be present. I have spoken to you the story of Mount Govardhana's appearance in this world, a sacred story that removes from human beings the greatest sins, that is very wonderful, and that gives the greatest liberation. It is not surprising that this story is so beautiful and glorious in this world.

---end of quote from the Garga Samhita-------

Even though Govardhana has shrunk considerably over the ages from his original size of 64 miles long, 40 miles wide, and 16 miles high (which made him 3 times as high as Mt. Everest), that he is still present and still visible is the greatest of blessings. We are most fortunate that Krishna has allowed us to come to Vrindavana to do the parikrama (circumambulation) of Sri Govardhana who is non-different from His very self.

Question: God Consciousness Only When We Are Old?

My family members are under the impression that we should just pray 10-15 minutes and not go in depth with God, only in old age we should think more of God.

Your student

Answer: Death Can Come At Any Time

Old age means those who are about to die. In today’s uncertain world, any of us can die at any minute. Therefore we must all take God consciousness very seriously right now.

Today's Thought:

Always Properly Respect the Devotees

The greatest fault of neophyte devotees is that they do not properly respect those devotees who are training them in Krishna consciousness. This is why the neophytes have difficulty advancing quickly along the path of spiritual awakening. If the neophytes will simply make a concerted effort to respect all those who are teaching them by their words and examples how become to Krishna conscious, their pathway back to home, back to Godhead will become smooth and easy.

Question: In Anxiety About Going to Work

After an extended leave from work to go deeper into Krishna consciousness, my mind is calm and steady. However, I know that I will soon have to go back to work. I am anxious not to lose the peace of mind I have how. How can I keep my peace of mind?

Your servant

Answer: Like Arjuna, Offer Your Work to Krishna

Arjuna was also in anxiety about going to work. But after being fully enlightened by Krishna he was able to go to work without any anxiety. In fact he became even more peaceful because he went back to work for the purpose of offering his work fully in Krishna's service.

The Great Boon Known as Old Age

In the material world everyone dreads old age because it means deterioration of the material body with its accompanying invalidity and sometimes senility. But for a devotee, old age is the most wonderful, exciting blessing. It means that he is now preparing to take the greatest journey of his lifetime, the journey back to home, back to Godhead.

Can I chant Gayatri mantra? I'm not initiated. If yes, what are the rules and regulations to be followed.

Your servant,

Prahlada.

Answer: First Become Our Initiated Disciple

You are not yet qualified to chant Gayatri. First become our initiated disciple, then we can properly initiate you into chanting Gayatri mantra.

The Spiritual Master's Mission

The spiritual master's mission is to lead the entire world out of chaos by teaching everyone how to awaken their dormant Krishna consciousness. There is no other means for solving the world's problems. To get into office, the mundane politicians make so many promises how they will solve this problem and that problem, but all they really do is create more and more problems. Therefore the time has come now for all thoughtful men to take guidance from the sages who purely present the teachings of Krishna for the benefit of the suffering humanity.

Question: Why Not Pray to the Demigods?

Hare Krishna Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to You!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I have understood that there is no separate need to pray to demigods as Krishna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and by simply serving Him under Your guidance I can achieve the topmost perfection. How should I respond to people who argue that one should pray to demigods for assisting us in our service to Krishna because the demigods are Vaisnavas and the scriptures reveal that service to Vaisnavas is even higher than direct service to Krishna? I understand that you are Krishna's servant and that I need to serve you and the Vaisnavas, the ISKCON devotees. So please guide me how to understand and respond to this argument for praying to the demigods.

Hare Krishna.

Your insignificant servant,
Syama Kunda das

Answer: Guru is Sum Total of All the Demigods

The spiritual master is the sum total of all the demigods. So by praying for his mercy you get even more than the benefit of praying 33 million different prayers to the 33 million different demigods. And besides this, how long would it take you to pray to each of the 33 million demigods? If you made a one minute prayer to each of them, and you did nothing but pray to them 24 hours a day without sleeping, eating, or doing anything else, it would take you more than 60 years to pray to all of them. Compare that with saying a simple one minute prayer to your spiritual master, which yields more benefit. Now intelligently analyze what makes more sense: praying to your spiritual master or praying to the demigods.

How to Become Humble

The first step in becoming humble is to realize how proud we actually are. We have a tendency to think ourselves to be so great that we don't need to take instructions from anyone. This is our gross foolishness. We desperately need to hear and be enlightened by those who know the truth so that we can escape our state of illusion and become solidly situated on the transcendental platform.

Appreciation: Without Your Knowledge I Would Be Ignorant

My foolish mind can generate a lot of justifications why to do things apart from Krishna. But if not for the knowledge that you share I would never realize how stupid and misleading my mind is.

Answer: This Is Why Guru is Required

This is why Krishna says that a guru is required. Without guru we remain slaves of our minds.
