Today's Thought:

Always Remain Humble

If you are serious about experiencing the unlimited nectar found in Krishna's name, you have to always remain in a humble state of mind thinking yourself to be lower than the straw in the street. If you are proud of your so-called greatness, the holy name will not be nectarean for you. It will instead taste like poison. So do yourself the greatest of all favors: Always remain humble.

Question: Illicit Sex With One's Wife is Sex in Mode of Goodness?

Dear Gurudeva,

I heard a lecture given in Mayapura by a Prabhupada disciple. He said that having sex with one's wife for procreation as per Srila Prabhupada's instructions is transcendental, in other words beyond the modes of material nature. This I know. But then he said that having sex with one's wife outside of regulative principles is in the mode of goodness because even though illicit, it is with one's wife.

Is this correct?

Your disciple

Answer: It's In the Mode of Ignorance

Prabhupada instructs that householders who want to have children may have sex only once in month just after the woman's menstrual cycle and after both the husband and wife have chanted 50 rounds of Hare Krishna japa mala. Such sex is divine and will attract saintly children to take birth to such a pure hearted couple. Householders who do not want to have children are strictly prohibited from having sex, including sex with contraceptives.

Regarding sex with one's wife that is not according to these principles, Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 3.14.33:

“Sex life with one's wife is equal to prostitution if the regulations are not properly followed.”

Since prostitution is in the mode of ignorance, such unauthorized sex is in the mode of ignorance, not the mode of goodness. Such illicit sex degrades the consciousness of those who indulge in it and attracts children who are not of the highest caliber and is thus strictly avoided by those who are intelligent.

Any devotee, Prabhupada disciple or otherwise, who preaches something like this, which is opposed to Srila Prabhupada's teachings, should not be allowed to give class. Otherwise the devotees who hear his class will be misguided and diverted from achieving pure love of God.

Question: What Else Must I Know and Follow?

Dear Gurudeva,

Hare Krishna. Please accept my humble obeisance unto your lotus feet

You have been very, very kind to me always and as such you have accepted me as you disciple. Now I think it is my only duty to protect the seed of Bhakti you have mercifully planted in my heart. I follow the four principal rules and regulation and chanting 16 rounds of Hare Krishna Mahamantra. I would like to know - is there anything else which I must know and follow, in addition to the above factors. Please suggest.

Hare Krishna.

Your very, very insignificant servant,

Abhayashray Das

Answer: Read, Chant, and Preach

As much as possible read Srila Prabhupada’s books, chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra, and preach the science of Krishna consciousness to whomever you meet. If you will stick solidly to this simple formula, you will become unlimitedly happy, and you will be able to help so many souls to go back to home, back to Godhead.

Relishing the Ultimate Thrill

What could be a more exciting adventure than to be engaged in the mission that we have been given by our spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, of delivering the entire world from suffering and illusion? What could be a greater thrill to wake up to every morning? Even if we are not successful in pulling it off, this endeavor itself is so exhilarating that we could spend many lifetimes happily meditating and working in this way. And if, in spite of all odds against our victory, we are somehow or other successful in pulling it off, this will be the most celebrated miracle in all of world history. So either in victory or not in victory what lifestyle could be ecstatic than this: to try to pull off a global spiritual revolution by bringing Krishna back to the center of the world civilization, where He belongs?

Question: Why No Mustaches and Beards?

Hare Krishna Gurudeva!

My humble obeisances to you.

I apologize to ask this mundane question to you. But since some of the devotees in our cell have this doubt, I am putting this forward on their behalf.

I was informed that all Vaisnavas should be clean shaven and they should not grow a beard or mustache. Is it mandatory? If so, why? It seems Arjuna, a great devotee of Lord Krishna had a mustache. Also, Sri Advaita Acarya sprouted a beard.

Your humble servant,
Lal Mohan

Answer: Caitanya Sampradaya Means Clean Shaven

When Srila Prabhupada was asked why in our movement we shave our heads he said: "We keep ourselves very clean, that's all.” Srila Prabhupada instructs us to not keep mustaches and beards. As his loyal followers we adhere to his instructions. Those devotees who keep mustaches and beards are deviating from Srila Prabhupada.

Regarding the beard of Advaita Acharya Srila Prabhupada explains as follows:

"According to the Caitanya Mahaprabhu's sampradaya, they keep themselves clean-shaven. And only single instance is there, Advaita Prabhu. He had his beard. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu never asked Him to cleanse. Because one reason is that Advaita Prabhu was just contemporary to His father, so He did not like to dictate. But otherwise, all His disciples, they were clean-shaved.”

As a ksatriya Arjuna is under a different set of regulative principles than those like us who are in the brahminical order.

Be Courageous

To make a stand against the modern day materialistic world civilization is an act of courage. One has to be very bold to defy the authority of the modern day scientists whose speculative theories regarding the origin of the universe are nowadays being accepted as gospel all over the world and paving the royal road to hell for those who accept them. It is much easier to not rock the boat and just go along with the flow of the materialistic society. But you will not find heroes among such cowards. The heroes are those courageous souls who boldly dare to defy the status quo by teaching the principles of factual truth as it is for saving the poor souls of this world from gliding down to the animal kingdom in their next lives.

Question: Who is Srila Prabhupada's Successor?

Who is Srila Prabhupada's successor, the next acarya in the line of disciplic succession?

Bhakta Richard

Answer: Those of His Disciples Who Strictly Follow Him

When asked by some challenging outsiders who would succeed him as the next leader of the Krishna consciousness movement, Srila Prabhupada replied:

"All of my disciples will take the legacy. If you want, you can also take it. Sacrifice everything. I -- one -- may soon pass away. But they are hundreds, and this movement will increase. It's not that I'll give an order: 'Here is the next leader.' Anyone who follows the previous leadership is a leader. I don't make any distinction between Indian and European. All my disciples are leaders... as much as they follow purely. If you want to follow, then you can also lead. But you don't want to follow. 'Leader' means one who is a first-class disciple. Evam parampara-praptam. One who is perfectly following. Our instruction is, guru mukha-padma-vakya. Do you know this? Ara na kariha mane asa. [My only desire is to have my consciousness purified by the words emanating from the lotus mouth of my spiritual master']. To become a leader is not very difficult, provided one is prepared to follow the instructions of the bonafide guru."

While lecturing in New York on 1 December 1966 Srila Prabhupada said:

"So Krishna also, as spiritual master of Arjuna, He played. He is the original acarya. Then acarya's disciple becomes acarya when he assimilates the knowledge received from bona fide acarya. So he becomes bona fide to act as an acarya. Evam parampara-praptam [Bg. 4.2]. Acarya means one who has become a rigid disciple of his acarya. Just like a critical student under a professor, he becomes a first-class professor, similarly, a person who is a very rigid student of bona fide acarya, he becomes next acarya. That is the... Evam parampara-praptam. This is the disciplic succession."

Srila Prabhuapda makes it very clear that those of his disciples who strictly follow him will be his successors in the line of disciplic succession.

Unlimited Bliss Beyond All Misery

We have been wandering throughout all of material existence for countless millions and billions of lifetimes taking one form after another within the 8,400,000 species of life. But in each and every lifetime we have not been satisfied or truly gratified because we have not understood what is the real principle of enjoyment. The titillation of our material senses has never satisfied us because we are not these bodies. Foolishly serving our material senses we have been unsuccessfully trying to enjoy since time immemorial. But now if we are fortunate enough to be enlightened by a bonafide spiritual master by the simple act of giving our love to Krishna we can experience unlimited bliss at every minute.

Question: Why Can't We Surrender Immediately?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

What can I do at every moment, what should be my mood every moment- whether I am walking on the road, doing my job, doing service or anything - that will be very, very pleasing to Your Divine Grace?

It is so nice thing to fully surrender but something is wrong with me. I remember Khatvanga Maharaja, how he surrendered immediately. Was he already a pure devotee? Why can't we surrender immediately?

Thank you
Your insignificant servant
Lila Manjari devi dasi

Answer: We Can

If you will simply always remember Krishna in all times, places, and circumstances, you are already a fully surrendered pure devotee. In this way you should never leave any gaps for maya in your consciousness. Now you are often forgetting Krishna. This is the difficulty. But if you will sincerely strive to always remember Krishna, gradually you will master the art and pure love of Krishna will become fully manifested within your heart.

Khatvanga Maharaja become a pure devotee as soon as he got notice of his imminent death. But since death can come to us at any moment, even when we least expect it, to be safe we should become fully surrendered, pure devotees right now.

Even Paltry Progress is Our Permanent Asset

Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 2.40:

"But any work begun in Krishna consciousness has a permanent effect, even though not finished. The performer of such work is therefore not at a loss even if his work in Krishna consciousness is incomplete. One percent done in Krishna consciousness bears permanent results, so that the next beginning is from the point of two percent, whereas in material activity without a hundred percent success there is no profit."

This is great encouragement for us to sincerely focus our lives on spiritual advancement. Even if we are not able to become highly advanced in Krishna consciousness, whatever progress we do make, even if only paltry, is our eternal asset.

Comment: It Is Not Sinful to Eat Meat

It is not sinful to eat meat because in the Bible God has provisioned it for us.

Anthony Jackson

Reply: What Goes Around, Comes Around

If God meant for us to eat meat, why did He give us a digestive system like the herbivorous animals and not like the carnivorous animals? This is simply common sense. In spite of this, for those of us who are determined to eat meat anyway, God has given us two canine teeth as a concession. We appreciate that you are a follower of the Bible, but you have failed to note that the Bible profoundly teaches us, "As you sow so shall you reap." This means that whatever goes around, comes around. In other words, if you eat the meat of a cow that was murdered in the slaughter house, you will become a cow and experience the same fate in your next birth. Since God has given you the free will to do as you like, if you want to continue eating meat you can do so. But kindly be aware of what will be your future and use your intelligence to understand what will be the best thing for your future happiness.

This is Our Mission

For the eternal living being to misidentify himself with a lump of temporary gross matter is the height of insanity and the cause of unlimited pain and suffering both on the individual level and the societal level. But yet being grossly misguided by the so-called scientists, this is the illusion is that the entire world society is now tightly embracing. Therefore there is an urgent necessity of global spiritual revolution to enlighten and awaken the entire human population to the actual reality which is as true as their actual selves. I hope you are right, because this is going to be a rough ride for many.

Wayne

Reply: Proof that the Light is More Powerful than Darkness

Wayne, a simple experiment proves that I am right.

Light a candle in a dark room and see how its light spreads everywhere. Now take a can that is dark on the inside and open it in a lit room. Does that darkness from the can dim the light in the room? No, it is immediately destroyed by the light. So there is great hope that if spiritual enlightenment is pushed forward intelligently and aggressively that this will have a profound impact on the entire human society.

The Greatest of Heroes

There is no greater hero than Krishna's devotee, because the devotee has no other business in this world except to save everyone from their illusion and suffering. By fully embracing the Lord's world deliverance mission as his very life and soul the devotee is sometimes put into great danger and difficulty. But he takes this as the greatest blessing to help him increase his feelings of dependence upon the Lord. The notable example of this is Jesus Christ, who was crucified because he was preaching the message of God. But in spite of the danger the devotee does not hesitate to push forward boldly in executing the Lord's world deliverance mission. Therefore there is no one more dear to the Lord than he, nor will there ever be anyone more dear.

Question: Does the Living Being Have Free Will?

Does the living being have free will?

(Question from Sunday Feast Lecture at ISKCON Austin)

Answer: Yes

Just as a citizen is under the government laws either as law-abiding free citizen or as a convicted criminal who is forced to obey the laws of the prison, the living being always must act under the laws of God. He cannot avoid doing this. His free will is his choice of whether he wants to directly serve God in His all-blissful spiritual kingdom, or he want to indirectly serve God by force by serving his material energy manifested in the form of birth, death, old age, and disease.

How to Deal with Calamities

As long as we are here in this material world it is sure and certain that we will have to face calamities. So how to deal with them so that we are not devastated? This is a very important art that every devotee must master in order to become solidly fixed in Krishna consciousness. The simple and sublime method is to always remember that everything is happening within the plan of Krishna for bringing His devotees back to home, back to Godhead as soon as possible. Therefore, because Krishna's mercy is always acting there is never any reason to become emotionally devastated in any situation. Queen Kunti is the great acharya or world teacher regarding how to cope with calamities. Question: Who is Lord Krishna?

Who is Lord Krishna? Why does the food have to be cooked as a loving offering to Lord Krishna?

Thom

Answer: The Source of All Existence

We can prove by logic that there is a personal God behind all of existence. And in the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna reveals Himself to be just that person, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the source of all existence. It is not just by His words. He actually reveals to His disciple Arjuna His universal form in which everything past, present, and future can be experienced all at once. In this same Bhagavad-gita Krishna teaches us the art of fully realizing Him by offering everything to Him, including the food that we eat. When we cook for Krishna and offer the foods to Him before we eat them, they become transformed from matter into spirit. A person who eats such offered food can tangibly experience how his consciousness is spiritualized or transcendentalized by such eating.

The Perfection of Love

In material life falling in love is considered to be the most wonderful thing or sometimes the most torturous thing. You become completely infatuated and enamored by another person. You then always want to think about them, be with them, and serve them. Because such love is on the mundane platform after a while the infatuation wears off and you then fall in love with someone else. Spiritual life is quite different. We fully give our love to Krishna and remain steady in this love. And then through Him we love all living beings equally and perfectly seeing them all as part and parcel of Him. Such love is steady and increasing. It is not temporary and flickering like the mundane so-called falling in love.

Question: What Does Spiritual Mean?

I just wanted to follow-up with you after meeting you last night. You mentioned the word "spiritual" a few times when you talked to me, and I find it to be an interesting word. You see, by profession, I am an engineer, and recognize that in our lifetimes, with the advent of computers, science has been developing exponentially. Many people even believe in scientism, which teaches that everything can be explained using the scientific method.

Is it possible you would be interested in explaining what "spiritual" means to you? Thank you very much in advance for your kind reply and no worries either way about telling me about "spiritual."

Sincerely yours,
Thom Kurtz

Answer: The Unchangeable Plane of Consciousness

Thom,

I’m surprised and delighted to hear from you!! Please feel free to inquire from me unlimitedly until your scientific intelligence is fully satisfied.

You can understand the meaning of spiritual by scientifically, psychologically analyzing yourself. In other words: What is the “I” that you experience at every minute as your factual self? When you were a little baby you experienced this “I.” As a toddler you experienced this “I.” Through every change of body you have experienced this same “I.” This is why we can remember things we did when we were much younger even though the body we have now is different.

So this “I” is a constant factor through so many changes of body. Scientifically speaking your body is experiencing a constant flow of chemicals in and out of it at every second. It never remains the same. So materially the body is constantly changing at every second. But spiritually you are always the same. So spiritual refers to that plane of consciousness which is unchangeable, while material refers to that plane where things are in constant flux.

So we can scientifically observe two planes: the material plane and the spiritual plane. The self is on the spiritual plane and the body is on the material plane. Consciousness exists on the spiritual plane and is non-existent on the material plane. There are no chemicals you can add to a dead body to make it conscious again because the spiritual self who was residing in the body has now gone away.

We can analyze our own psychology. Do we say “I hand,” or do we say “my hand”? We say, “my hand,” because we intuitively know that the body and the self and two distinct things. They are not the same.

So spirituality begins when you learn to trust you own intuition and abandon all forms of dogmatic thinking.

After meeting His Holiness Vishnujana Swami in Austin, Texas in the spring of 1971, I gave up my position as the house musician at the Sattva restaurant and took up residence in Austin's ISKCON center at 2906 Dancy Street. I threw my 300 songs into the temple's garbage can because they were not Krishna conscious and resolved that from then on I would only write Krishna conscious songs.

Since Austin, Texas currently has a very active music scene, I decided to introduce my Krishna conscious songs to the Austin public to see how they would be received. On the evening of 14 November 2016 I sang at Threadgill's, a popular music venue, and got a very enthusiastic response from the audience, more than any of the other musicians, who were all non-devotees, who sang during the program.

After my set, a local singer/songwriter named Wayne Kimes told me he that is not able to write songs like I can. He told me, "What you are doing is very important. You need to keep doing it. A lot of people here in town in Austin, you know, it's changing. It's turning corporate and they're all checking out. But we all need to be reminded of what you are talking about. It's a good message. Keep it going."

Music is very popular with the general population and has a strong effect on their consciousness. If Krishna conscious music can become popular, this will be very beneficial for the human society. Our mission is to make the entire world Krishna conscious. So out of kindness upon the fallen suffering souls of this world we should take advantage of any and all means to make this happen as soon as possible.

Question: Who Is Our Instructing Guru?

Hare Krishna.

My dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet

All glories to you and to Srimati Gurumataji
All glories to Srila Prabhupada

Srila Gurudeva, the pure devotee of the Lord from whom we got initiated is our initiating spiritual master (diksha guru). Then who is our instructing spiritual master (siksha guru)? Is this our initiating guru or is this someone else?

Thank you!

Your unworthy servant
Nandapriya Devi Dasi

Answer: One Who Purely Represents Your Initiating Guru

Your spiritual master is both your diksha guru (initiating guru) and siksha guru (instructing guru) because, in addition to formally initiating you as his disciple, he is training you how to go back to home, back to Godhead. Others, such as Guru Mataji, who teach you the same thing as your spiritual master, are your instructing gurus. You have only one initiating guru, but you can accept others as your instructing gurus, if they are strictly teaching you exactly what your initiating guru is teaching you.

Know Who You Are and Be Who You Are

Our philosophy is very simple: Know who you are, and be who you are. This is the simple formula how to achieve unlimited peace and happiness within your heart and how to become fully empowered to render the highest service to all living beings by reconnecting them with their actual selves. I am therefore praying intensely to Lord Krishna that everyone in the world can now understand that they are the eternal servants of Krishna and become practically engaged in His pure devotional service.

Question: Krishna Consciousness in Thailand?

Hare Krishna, Srila Gurudeva,

Kindly accept my humble obeisance
Humble obeisance to Srimati Gurumataji also
And all glories to Srila Prabhupada,

Thank you for the daily Ultimate Self-Realization broadcasts.

Right now I am on a trip to Thailand with my family, and I have a curiosity question. This place is a lot about Lord Buddha. So if I may inquire from Your Grace, what Krishna conscious percentage people in general are possible here?

Your humble student and servant,

Shivani

Answer: All Buddhists are Indirectly Krishna Conscious

Although Lord Buddha is actually Krishna Himself, He taught an atheistic philosophy in order to stop the people of India from slaughtering animals. He would have taught theism, but the people at that time were so degraded that they would not be able to accept God. So out of kindness upon the suffering animals He simply taught a philosophy of non-violence and induced the people to follow Him.

Since Lord Buddha is Krishna Himself the followers of Lord Buddha are already Krishna conscious, but in an indirect way. Simply now we have to educate them to understand that their beloved Lord Buddha is actually Krishna Himself. This will create an amazing spiritual revolution within the Buddhist world.

Empowered to Krishnize the Whole World

In his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 5.18.9 Srila Prabhupada explains that we should pray to Lord Nrsimhadeva to sit in the core of our hearts killing all of our bad propensities so that with clean minds we can peacefully worship the Lord and bring peace to the entire world. Thus Krishna's devotee wants to become 100% pure within his heart, completely peaceful with absolutely no material desires, so that he becomes fully absorbed in pure love of Krishna and can successfully bring peace to the entire world by flooding it with Krishna consciousness.

Question: How to Handle Distress?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Hare Krishna!

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I came to know that the amount of sensual happiness and distress we experience in our life is already predestined. Thus it must be not wise to seek relief from distress by running after maya pleasures, which is what I usually do.

Then what to do with distress if escaping from it will not work? And can this predestined amount of distress be changed (minimized) if I turn to Krishna?

Your student
R.

Answer: Use It to Increase Your Transcendental Bliss

Since the devotee becomes liberated from the reactions to his past sins, he experiences less material distress than he would have if he had not surrendered to Krishna. But he welcomes whatever distress he inevitably experiences due to his being in this material world. He welcomes this distress, accepting it as his best friend, because it helps him to intensify his taking shelter of Krishna. For the devotee, therefore, there is no such thing as distress because whatever distress comes to him he uses to increase his transcendental bliss.

Rising Early With a Mission to Save the World

Most people sleep as late as possible every morning and then finally get up giving themselves just enough time to arrive punctually at their jobs. They labor very hard in this way for their entire lives simply for the maintenance of their temporary material bodies, ignoring what is actually beneficial for their actual spiritual selves. Contrarily, we devotees are super inspired to rise as early as possible every morning (I am writing this at 2:12am) because we are on a mission to save the entire world population from illusion and suffering. This is a far more exhilarating and exciting thing to wake up to every morning. Therefore I would never dream of trading this unlimitedly adventurous life of Krishna consciousness for a humdrum so-called existence of material drudgery.

Question: Why Is It Necessary to Have a God?

I thank you for the articles that you send to me daily; they are very inspirational. Please can you tell me why is it necessary to have a God?

Many question that science cannot yet answer about the Universe, they then put down the answer as all being created by God or evolved over time.

What then is your view of aliens being here on earth years ago? Were they revered as Gods with high degree of intelligence, e.g. the way the Egyptian pyramids were built, revered for their advanced level of knowledge, aliens with monkey like faces we call Hanuman or Gods with numerous arms like the Goddess Laksmi that we pray to for success and prosperity.

Do you think a time will come when we will not need a God - because by then there will be no mystery as science will have proven everything and we will have all of the answers?

God gives us purpose in life and personally by praying to God helps me to clarify things in my own mind and set myself goals and targets; e.g. like saying to God please help me to pass my exams so in my mind I know that God will not help me unless I help myself so I study with enthusiasm and dedicated time and when I succeed I put it down to God when in fact it is my own doing. If I didn't work hard at my studies I would not have succeeded. This rationalizing sometimes makes me think that there is no God but a being that we all have created in our minds to harness our thoughts and behavior, to make us fear the unknown and to live within rules and laws.

Please can you publish my questions and your answer so your followers can understand too as I am sure some have similar thoughts and questions.

I wish you well in your continued quest.

Kind regards,
Pearl

Answer: Without God You Can't Have Anything

The basic principle here is that if you use God to fulfill your material desires, when you get your desires fulfilled you will feel that you no longer need God. But when you understand rightly that serving God is your constitutional position of unlimited happiness, you will never want to abandon God. Just as the hand as a part of the body is naturally meant to serve the whole body, you as part of God are naturally meant to serve Him. You questions are answered as follows:

If there is no God, there is no you to have anything. So God must necessarily exist in order for you to exist because without God you do not exist, nor does anything exist.

True science acknowledges that everything comes from something because nothing comes from nothing. Nowadays bogus so-called scientists are claiming that everything has come out nothing, but yet they have not one shred of scientific evidence to support their ridiculous theory. They want us to accept it from them on the basis of blind faith that everything comes out of nothing, but I can scientifically observe and prove that everything comes from something. These so-called scientists are so blind to what is right in front of their eyes. Therefore they should be called dogmatists, not scientists.

Formerly when the atmosphere on Planet Earth was more pious we were often visited by the demigods from the higher planets. But now that the atmosphere on this planet has become so degraded they do not want to come here any more.

God is the sustaining power behind all of existence. Therefore since existence always exists, God must necessarily always exist.

You should not engage God as your servant to help you pass your exams. God is your master. You are His servant. Therefore your only prayer should be how you can be engaged in serving Him perfectly with pure love at every minute.

Thank you for your well-wishes for our quest. Kindly note that our quest is not how to discover the Absolute Truth. We have already found the Absolute Truth. So now our quest is how to elevate the entire human society to the platform of pure devotional service.

Question: Disturbed If Someone Speaks to Me Harshly

Hare Krishna, Prabhuji,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All Glories to Sri Guru and Gauranga!!!
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!!!

Prabhuji, I feel very much inspired by hearing your classes. I heard you recently in Pune and I very much liked the way you answer the questions.

Sometimes Prabhuji I feel envious of those who are better than me in their spiritual life and even in my work at office. I get very disturbed if someone speaks to me little harshly. I am very low at tolerance. Though I don't retaliate to them by speaking some harsh words, it remains in my heart and I am not able to appreciate those devotees even though they have done so much for me either knowingly or unknowingly.

Please kindly enlighten me so that I could give up these anarthas and serve in the best possible way.

Your aspiring servant,
Akash

Answer: See Everything As the Unlimited Mercy of Krishna

Regarding your question of being envious of those devotees who are more advanced than you in Krishna consciousness, I asked a similar question to Srila Prabhupada. Here’s how he answered me:

"So far your question about jealousy, spiritual jealousy means to think always that the service rendered by such and such devotee is so nice and pleasing to Krishna, so let me try harder to please Krishna than him and then Krishna will notice me also.”

If a devotee speaks to you harshly, you should think that you deserve it for being such a nonsense and that they have now blessed you by reminding you of this fact. If you always keep this humble mood, you will advance very quickly on the pathway back to home, back to Godhead. In this connection Srila Prabhupada states in his purport to Bhagavad-gita 2.4:

"It is general etiquette that superiors are not to be offered even a verbal fight. Even if they are sometimes harsh in behavior, they should not be harshly treated."

And Lord Sri Krishna instructs in Srimad Bhagavatam 10.64.41 as follows:

"My dear followers, never treat a learned brahmana harshly, even if he has sinned. Even if he attacks you physically or repeatedly curses you, always continue to offer him obeisances."

Regarding harsh treatment at your office, this is a poignant reminder of the harsh nature of this material world. You foolishly came here thinking that you could enjoy being an imitation Krishna. But now Lord Krishna is so kind that He is putting you in a miserable situation to remind you that this place is not your home.

In this regard in a Bhagavad-gita lecture Srila Prabhupada gave this advice:

"Suppose somebody speaks of me very harshly. Naturally we become angry. Just like somebody calls me, 'You are dog,' or 'You are hog.' But if I am self-realized, if I know perfectly well that I am not this body so you call me hog, dog, or king, emperor, majesty, what is that? I am not this body. So either you call me, 'Your majesty,' or you call me a dog or a pig, what I have got to do? I am neither his majesty nor a dog nor a cat -- nothing of the sort. I am servant of Krishna."

If you will train yourself to see every experience at every moment in the light of these divine instructions, harshness or rude behavior will never torture you ever again. Rather you will experience how Lord Sri Krishna is blessing you unlimitedly in all times, places, and circumstances.

Meant for Bringing About a Revolution

Sometimes our readers point out to us the typos that occasionally appear in our daily Thought for the Day broadcasts. We truly appreciate them for doing this. Our endeavor is that every broadcast should be 100% typo free. But sometimes due to time intensive circumstances involved in sending out a daily broadcast even while we are simultaneously engaging in so many other activities including traveling all over the world, typos do creep in.

In this regard we request our readers to note Srila Prabhupada's statement regarding writing frailties in his composition of the Srimad Bhagavatam as follows:

"I must admit my frailties in presenting Srimad-Bhagavatam, but still I am hopeful of its good reception by the thinkers and leaders of society on the strength of the following statement of Srimad-Bhagavatam (1.5.11):

tad-vag-visargo janatagha-viplavo
yasmin prati-slokam abaddhavaty api
namany anantasya yaso 'nkitani yac
chrnvanti gayanti grnanti sadhavah

"On the other hand, that literature which is full with descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, form and pastimes of the unlimited Supreme Lord is a transcendental creation meant to bring about a revolution in the impious life of a misdirected civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though irregularly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by purified men who are thoroughly honest."

So we will continue our effort to present typo-less compositions. And we beg your tolerance for typos that do sometimes appear. Typos or no typos, we are trying to write in such a way to bring about a global spiritual revolution as soon as possible. When there is an emergency situation the warning must be given to everyone as soon as possible even if there is irregularity.

Answer: Because He Is the Source of All Existence

Krishna is naturally God because He is the source of all existence. Everything emanates from Him. Nothing at all can exist beyond what He chooses to emanate from Himself. Who can compete with that? How can someone be so foolish to think that they can challenge and defeat the very source of their existence? This is the extreme idiocy of the modern day so-called civilization.

Suggestion: Solution for Pollution

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your emails. For pollution control, there is short term and long term plan.

Long term plan:

1.Make solar power plants, windmill power plants, sea wave power plants, etc.
2 Manufacture only battery operated vehicles.
3.Dump waste materials in deserts scientifically.
4.Use coal, crude oil, etc. only if it is very essential.

Short term plan:

1. Use bicycles for short distance destination.
2. Pollution control board inspectors should conduct the inspection of factories on a regular basis to control pollution.

These are all the thoughts that are coming to my mind now. If any new thought comes i shall write to you.

Thanking you,
Rajagopalan

Answer: Real Solution for Pollution

Thank you for your thoughts on how to clean up the pollution in the world.

Kindly note that pollution starts first in the mind and then manifests in the external world. If everyone would chant Hare Krishna, their minds would become pure and automatically the external pollution problem will go away. External pollution is all due to overindulgence in sense gratification. This overindulgence will automatically cease when everyone awakens their dormant Krishna consciousness.

Answer: Initiation From and Obedience to the Bona Fide Guru

The neophyte devotee (kanistha adhikari) advances to the madhyama adhikari (middle) platform by taking initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and by being fully obedient to him. The symptoms of such an advanced devotee are:

1. He worships the Supreme Personality of Godhead as the highest object of love.

If it were not for Srila Prabhupada's coming here to save us, we would still be hopelessly ensnared in the most nightmarish cycle of birth and death. Thank you, Srila Prabhupada, for coming here to save us!

Question: Does this Work for Atheists?

Does this work for atheists too? I am asking this because I'm one.

Darwin Indukar

Answer: Our Program Most Profoundly Benefits All

Our program most profoundly benefits all because it trains everyone, including atheists, how to unlock the unlimited happiness that is presently sleeping deep within them. We reject any kind of stereotyped or dogmatic thinking and take a fresh look at reality to understand clearly what it is, how we fit into it, and how we can perfect our participation in it.

We have a deep philosophical understanding of our existence that it is so exhaustive and far-reaching that both atheists and theists are impressed and amazed not only by its brilliance but also by its practicality. We reveal to the world how it is scientifically impossible for everything to come of out nothing and how the original substance of existence must necessarily possess personality.

We encourage all those who are intellectually inclined to open-mindedly consider our philosophy and try out our meditational techniques because we are confident that all those who do so will find them to be strikingly wonderful and through them will experience the most uplifting consciousness transformation of their entire lives.

There is an Ocean of Unlimited Bliss Within You

There's no need for you to ever be miserable or confused ever again because there is an ocean of unlimited bliss within you. This means that the only reason you ever suffer is simply due to ignorance of your original natural constitutional position as a servant of the Supreme Person.

All you have to do to live always in that realm of unlimited bliss is to learn from the bona fide spiritual master the art of how to perfectly serve that Supreme Person at every minute.

Just to See Him Smile Makes it All Worthwhile

There are so many hardships experienced on the pathway to spiritual perfection that it sometimes becomes difficult for the disciples to tolerate them. But when the spiritual master sees the sincere endeavor of his disciples to serve Krishna, he becomes very pleased with them and smiles most benevolently upon them. Then, when the disciples see the spiritual master's smile, they know that it is all worthwhile.

Question: Why Can't We Pray in Our Native Tongue?

Dear Gurudeva,

Why in the Catholic tradition it is ordinary to pray in one's native language, but when we chant japa mala we do so in the Sanskrit language?

Indre

Answer: We Can, But We Follow Lord Caitanya's Example

Lord Caitanya confirms that we can pray to God in any language. But He personally prays to Krishna or God by chanting Hare Krishna. Therefore by following His example we also chant Hare Krishna. Also, because in our movement we have devotees from all over the world who are speaking so many different languages, for us to all chant in Sanskrit gives us a common language so that we can all sing in one kirtana together. If we all were to sing in our native tongues, we would not be able to all sing together in one kirtana as we do now.

Today's Thought:

There is Truly No One More Amazing than Krishna

There is naturally and truly no one more amazing than Krishna because Krishna is the source of all amazingness. This means that in all of existence anything or anyone that is amazing or wonderful possesses this quality only because Krishna has endowed that person or thing with a portion of His amazingness potency. So why should we be attracted to anything or anyone else? Even if we are attracted elsewhere, still it is actually only to Krishna that we are attracted because it is only by His divine potency that anything is beautiful or attractive. So instead of artificially indirectly relishing beauty, we should relish beauty at its source, in its original pure form, the only place where it is unlimitedly relishable.

Question: Krishna's Pastimes Outside of Vrindavana

It is stated in scripture that Krishna never steps even one foot outside of Vrindavana. So if Krishna never leaves Vrindavana, who performs all the pastimes which occur outside Vrindavana like the killing of Kamsa or speaking Bhagavad-gita and many others?

Amit

Answer: Vasudeva Krishna

Your question is answered in the Caitanya-caritamrita, Antya 1.67:

"The Krishna known as Yadu-kumara is Vasudeva Krishna. He is different from the Krishna who is the son of Nanda Maharaja. Yadu-kumara Krishna manifests His pastimes in the cities of Mathura and Dvaraka, but Krishna the son of Nanda Maharaja never at any time leaves Vrindavana."
