Krishna, the Supreme Orchestrator

Krishna the supreme orchestrator is behind everything that happens. If you will always take complete shelter of Him in all circumstances, you will never have any difficulty. And if difficulties do come, they will be experienced as the greatest blessings, not really difficulties at all. To understand this correctly and implement it fully is the secret of how to achieve unlimited, ever-expanding happiness.

Question: How to Preach?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

How should one preach and still feel himself to be lower than a blade of grass? Does this mean that I should not speak like you or Srila Prabhupada do on account of me being a neophyte? I know distributing books is the main business but I also find myself in situations where I am talking and others are listening. I don't want to come off too preachy if I am not even advanced.

Sincerely,

Joe

Answer: As a Philosophical World Conqueror

Here is Prabhupada’s instruction on how we should preach:

"Go from country and country, from village to village, town to town, and make digvijaya: 'Here is our philosophy. There is God. We can prove there is God. Who are you, you deny God? Come on.' That is digvijaya.”

To understand what Prabhupada means note that digvijaya means to defeat all opposing arguments in all directions. So a preacher should be in the mood of a philosophical world conqueror. He preaches boldly all over the world wherever he goes to defeat all opposing arguments.

Not coming off as too preachy means that you not should explain our teachings dogmatically. You should explain our teachings in a very intelligent philosophical way so that all thoughtful people will accept them as the the topmost knowledge.

Today's Thought:

World is Being Grossly Misled by Fools and Rascals

The present day world leaders are simply fools and rascals. Therefore they are completely incompetent to provide an atmosphere of peace, happiness, and prosperity for the world's citizens. In this connection Srila Prabhupada states:

"In democratic government at the present moment all kinds of fools and rascals are making decisions. But what can they do? What is the result of their legislation? They enact something today just to whimsically repeal it tomorrow. One political party utilizes a country for one purpose, and the next moment another political party forms a different type of government and nullifies all the laws and regulations. This process of chewing the chewed (punah punas carvita-carvananam [SB 7.5.30]) will never make human society happy. In order to make all human society happy and prosperous, we should accept the standard methods given by liberated persons."

Therefore the people in general must be educated to only elect liberated persons, persons who are Krishna conscious, to political office. Then when the world is lead by enlightened Krishna conscious men the entire world will become peaceful and happy.

Question: Is Fear of Krishna Good?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Is it considered a good thing for a neophyte to sometimes feel great fear of Krishna?

Sincerely,

Joe

Answer: Fear of Krishna Is Only for the Sinful

A criminal is afraid of the police and a law-abiding citizen feels protected by the police. Similarly, fear of God is for the materialists who are engaged in all sort of sinful activities, while a devotee has no fear of God because he obeys the laws of God. Rather he knows God as Krishna, the supremely merciful and all-attractive Personality of Godhead, the topmost well-wishing friend of His devotees. Therefore instead of fearing Krishna, he loves Him like anything.

Embrace the Process of Sadhana Bhakti

Even though sadhana bhakti, executing devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna according to rules and regulations, may sometimes appear to the beginner on the path of bhakti to be difficult, still he should faithfully follow the instructions given by the spiritual master. In this way, in due course of time, he becomes advanced in Krishna experiencing ever-increasing bliss at every moment.

Question: What to Tell an Atheist?

Hare Krishna, Your Grace Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Accept my most humble and respectful obeisances.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The reason I write to you is because I want to ask you a question.

A few weeks ago, a girl, a friend of my best friend who left the body recently, wrote to me because she wanted a guide to achieve inner peace. She told me that she was going through some very hard moments added to the loss of this friend we have in common. She has felt very sad. She made it clear that she was atheist.

I would love to help her, but I do not feel qualified enough to do so. At the same time I do not want to leave her alone because she is a soul that is approaching Krishna. So what I want to ask is what do you recommend to me to preach to her appropriately?

Always at your service,
Bhaktin Gilma

Answer: Logical Proof of God's Existence

First explain to her that since nothing comes from nothing there must be an original something from which everything has sprung. That something is called God. And since that source of all emanations is emanating persons, that source must also therefore necessarily possess personality. Therefore by pure logic we can understand that there is a personal God who is the source of all existence.

Once she is convinced of this explain to her that the secret of achieving unlimited happiness is to harmonize oneself with God in all one’s thoughts, words, and deeds. This science of harmonizing oneself with the Supreme is called bhakti yoga. Tell her that if she will open-mindedly try this she will enter into an amazing new world of unlimited happiness. This is called Krishna consciousness. Tell her that you will be her personal guide to help her achieve this new wonderful state of unlimited happiness.

Today's Thought:

A Devotee Cannot Tolerate Forgetting Krishna

For one who has awakened his dormant Krishna consciousness forgetting Krishna is worse than death. Thus such a devotee is naturally absorbed twenty-four hours daily in hearing, chanting, remembering, offering prayers, worshiping, and serving the lotus feet of Guru, Krishna, and Vaisnavas. Such activities are all auspicious and full of spiritual potencies, which make the devotee perfect in self-realization, so that his only desires are to awaken Krishna consciousness within the hearts of all conditioned souls and to achieve the association of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Such a devotee undoubtedly approaches the Lord without difficulty.

Question: Stress from Working Night Shift

Hare Krishna.

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

Srila Gurudeva,

These days I have been going through a challenging situation.

I've been doing the night shift in the office. I work between 07:30pm and 04:30am. So, nowadays, this is quite impossible for me to attend daily mangala arati and the morning lecture. My daily sadhana has got disturbed a lot. Also I could not even complete 16 rounds of chanting on few occasions in the last couple of months. I completed them later.

But, it gives me a sense of embarrassment.

So, could you please enlighten me?

Your disciple

Answer: Mangala Arati As Soon As You Get Off Work

You can celebrate mangala arati by singing the Gurvastaka prayers as soon as you get off work at 4:30am. Carry the photos of Srila Prabhupada, your spiritual master, Panca Tattva and Radha Krishna with you. You can sing to those photos anywhere and in this way have a super ecstatic mangala arati every day.

For the morning lecture you can hear a recorded lecture. If on a given day you cannot complete your rounds, you must make them up the next day.

Krishna has blessed you with your current situation to increase your hankering for Him. So don’t worry. Chant and be happy. Everything will be okay.

Prime Necessity of Human Life

The prime necessity of human life is to realize one's eternal relation with the Lord and thus surrender unto Him without delay. Any another course of action for the human being is suicidal. And there is not much more to be said in this connection. Therefore everyone should become serious about awakening their dormant Krishna consciousness as soon as possible. There is no alternative to this way for man.

Question: Did Jesus Teach to Speak Truthfully?

Do you agree that Jesus taught his followers to speak truthfully and that Jesus himself only taught the truth?

Do you agree that Jesus said the two greatest commandments were:

"Love God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength" and "Love your neighbor as yourself?"

Yours truly,
Thom

Answer: All Great Acharyas Teach This

It is a fact that Lord Jesus Christ and all the great acharyas (spiritual masters) speak truthfully and train their followers to also speak truthfully. This is absolutely essential for anyone who is serious about attaining genuine happiness in life. They also teach us the most important lesson of all, which is to love God. When one truly loves God, not just in name only, he also automatically loves all of God's children, not just his neighbors. Therefore these great spiritual masters teach us to be compassionate to all of our brothers and sisters, even those with four legs, wings, and fins. That's why we don't eat them.

In this connection in the Bhagavad-gita Lord Sri Krishna teaches us that the humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle priest, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater. Therefore love for all beings is one of the symptoms of those who are actually saintly.

Terrorism Plot in Melbourne

After an ecstatic evening of singing and dancing in downtown Melbourne we were amazed to find out that a major terrorist attack had been planned for downtown Melbourne in which there would be a large explosion and then as many people as possible murdered with knives and guns. By Krishna's grace the plot was discovered and averted before it could be executed. This reminds us of the famous quote from Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura that this material world is not a fit place for a gentleman's living. It is also reminds us of this verse:

rakhe krsna mare ke
mare krsna rakhe ke

"If Krishna wants to kill someone, no one can protect him,
and if Krishna wants to protect someone, no one can kill him."

So knowing fully well that we will always be protected by Lord Sri Krishna, we will continue fearlessly with our service of pushing forward the Krishna consciousness in all circumstances until our last dying breath. This is the perfection of lifestyle.

Question: Why Do You Teach Contrary to Jesus' Teachings?

Why do you teach things that are in conflict with Jesus' teachings such as reincarnation and a special diet?

Your friend,
Thom

Answer: One Needs to Understand Jesus Properly

One needs to understand Jesus' teachings properly before he criticizes others for teaching things that are in conflict with them. In this connection, kindly note that reincarnation is confirmed in many places in the Bible. For example the Bible tells us that John the Baptist is a reincarnation of the prophet Elijah. And also, according to the Ten Commandments we are prohibited from killing. But yet we see big, big ungodly slaughter houses, which are creating horrible pollution of our rapidly disappearing water supply, all over the Christian world. What kind of nonsense hypocrisy is this? Millions of innocent animals are brutally killed by Christians every day while Jesus is presented as the Good Shepherd, a protector of the innocent animals. Can you imagine Jesus slashing a lamb's throat and gorging himself on the blood and flesh of that innocent creature?

Flood the World with Krishna's Names

On 23 December 2016 I was blessed with the most auspicious opportunity to join Lord Caitanya's sankirtana party in downtown Melbourne, Australia. When I arrived I found a huge party of devotees chanting and dancing in an ecstasy that was so powerful and attractive that all the non-devotee bystanders were also sucked into the most glorious Hare Krishna kirtana by watching and hearing. Some of them were so enlivened that they joined us, dancing in ecstasy. May the chanting of the holy names of the Lord always go on like this every day in every town, city, and village throughout the world.

Krishna Is Not Realized With Blunt Material Senses

atah sri-krsna-namadi

"No one can understand Krishna as He is by the blunt material senses. But He reveals Himself to the devotees, being pleased with them for their transcendental loving service unto Him." (Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu 1.2.234)

Even though it is clearly stated that we cannot understand Krishna with our blunt material senses, there is still a class of men who insist that they will only accept as real that which they can perceive with their gross material senses. This means that they are less intelligent. Just as there is so much out there which is not perceivable by our gross senses, but which can be perceived by scientific instruments, there is even more out there which is beyond the perceptual power of even our most advanced scientific instruments. So if one is given the technique by which to experience this reality which is far, far beyond even our most advanced technologies of perception, why one should not be willing to accept it? To reject this is the greatest foolishness. Such is the position of the so-called scientists and philosophers of our modern day society.

Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:

Question: How Am I Responsible For My Actions?

Dandavat Gurudeva!

After going through the Gita I have concluded that we are like computers, fully programmed. The programmer is someone else, call it by any name. Shri Krishna says, "I'm the cause of all causes." So we are merely like puppets. We are all predestined. We have nothing at our disposal. That's why I've surrendered to the lotus feet of Shri Krishna. I feel all my actions good or bad are not mine, I'm nobody! My thinking is not mine, I don't see with my eyes nor walks with my legs. I'm not 'me,' but someone else in me. So how am I responsible for my actions? I'm writing these lines; its not me, but there is someone in my form! Would you kindly say something about this?

I'm, at your feet,

Prem Narayan

Answer: You Chose to Try to Enjoy Separately from Krishna

No, it is you who has written those lines. Whether one is liberated or is under the grip of the material nature, he is still acting and reaping the results of his actions.

If one chooses to try to enjoy separately from Krishna or God, it is a fact that he becomes like a puppet completely programmed and controlled by the three modes of material nature. Whatever he does is totally under the influence of the material nature. But still he has to accept the karmic reactions of whatever he does because it was his free choice to break away from serving the Lord. For example, if one decides to join a terrorist organization, he is then fully under the command of his terrorist leader. But if he is captured after committing a heinous act of terrorism, he cannot claim innocence on the basis of his simply being a puppet of his terrorist commander. Because he chose to join the terrorist organization now he is fully responsible for everything he does. Similarly, the living being who has rebelled against the authority of the Lord is 100% responsible for everything that he does while he is under the grip of the three modes of material nature. So even though such unfortunate, foolish souls are like puppets being totally manipulated by the strings of the three modes of material nature, they still have to accept the reactions for all of their actions.

However, such illusioned souls always have within themselves the power to free themselves from their imprisonment by taking shelter of Guru and Krishna when the opportunity presents itself. In such a liberated, sheltered position they become independent of the modes of material nature and become restored to their original identities as intimate associates of Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His most wondrous spiritual abode.

Today's Thought:

How Do We Know That Krishna Is Real?

Recently a materialist friend wrote me arguing that what is stated in scriptures should not be accepted as true unless it is based on empirical evidence and rational thinking. The fallacy of his line of logic is that he is trying to comprehend that which is spiritual with his blunt material senses. This is not possible. To understand that which is spiritual one must spiritualize his senses, mind, and intelligence. It is only then that he can realize and comprehend the sublime spiritual plane.

So the conclusion is that the way to know that Krishna is real is to purify your senses so that you can personally meet and associate with Him. Then you will personally experience His most sublime existence at every minute.

Question: What Can I Do to Distribute Books?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Hare Krishna.

Please Accept My Humble Obeisances.
All Glories to Sri Guru & Sri Gauranga.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I know that we should flood this world with Srila Prabhupada's books. I would really like to participate in this. But I don't know where to begin. What can I do?

Your servant

Answer: Try One of More of These 42 Ways

You can:

1. Always keep a small book in your purse, bag, or backpack. That way anytime the conversation goes towards Krishna, you can pull out the book, if even just to show them a picture.
2. Leave books in waiting rooms at the doctor’s office, laundry mat, or any place where people have to wait and can happily read something. Write or stamp inside the book “Please take” or “Free Gift”.
3. Give books to people who come to your house to make deliveries, fix things, etc.
4. Give books as gifts for any occasion, like birthdays, weddings anniversaries, engagement parties, home openings, graduations, etc.
5. Ask local Indian/ Asian market if they will display and sell your books.
6. Donate books to a local library.
7. Ask local health food shops if they will display and sell books.
8. Ask at a local import shops or new age shops if they will display and sell books.
9. Book a booth at any local fairs or events.
10. Lay a blanket on the grass in the local park, with books on top, and sing kirtanas to attract people.
11. Sell the books to a used book shop.
12. Approach local book shops about selling the books.
13. Distribute books to co-workers.
14. Give books to family members.
15. Give books to friends and/or classmates.
16. Go to events, where large crowds have gathered.
17. Spend a bit of time in the spiritual/ religious section of any book shop and make conversation with people looking for books on these topics.
18. Go on harinama sankirtana and distribute books to the people who stop to watch.
19. Approach people waiting at bus stands, subways, train stations.
20. Distribute books to shop keepers you regularly shop with.
21. Get a permit to setup a book table.
22. Go door to door.
23. Check for any yoga or similar clubs at your local university. If there isn’t one, start it.
24. Approach yoga centers in your community. Ask if you can display books there or have a program there.
25. Distribute prasadam and display books.
26. Donate books to be put in hotel rooms.
27. Ask an experienced book distributor to take you out on book distribution.
28. When you are traveling by train in India, join the local temple sankirtana party.
29. Make a book distribution buddy. Commit to getting together once a week or so and distributing books together.
30. Ask people working in shops if they would like a book.
31. Approach business owners (especially Indians) and ask if they would like to buy books in bulk to distribute to employees.
32. Start a book table at your University or College campus.
33. Whenever you distribute a book, or even if you don’t, make sure to be very friendly and have a sweet smile. When people are pleased with you they will come back for more.
34. You can distribute books on e-bay, Amazon, or other websites like those.
35. Distribute through flyers: Create and distribute flyers that have the Krishna.com website (or your local temple book shop).
Include pictures, excerpts, testimonials, your local number, website, and email.
36. Take people’s e-mails, and don’t “sell” the books, but inform and inspire them to take.
37. Next time you take a flight; just place a couple books in the magazine pockets of the seats. The next group of passengers will be in for a pleasant surprise.
38. Leave books on the magazine tables in reception areas of businesses, professional offices, and other establishments.
39. If you can’t distribute books yourself, help someone who already is. For example, you can buy books for them to distribute.
40. Assist devotees who want to distribute books by covering their other temple services, etc.
41. You can get a street address listing from some phone companies. You could choose any little town that may never have a chance to see devotees or you may want to take responsibility for a particular section of a larger city. Set aside a small portion of your monthly income and send out a few books each month until you’ve covered your chosen area.
42. Setup a cake sale or cookie sale at work or in the town, for every donation to the prasadam include the cost of the book as a “free” incentive.

I got the above nice list from:

http://www.iskconbookdistribution.com

Do one or more of the above and you will be helping to save the world. What could be a better thing to do with your life?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please Accept My Humble Obeisances.

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I really appreciate/like your preaching style because it's always inspiring, enlivening, nectarean (especially the Q&A part), direct as per Srila Prabhupada teachings and you also elevate the consciousness of people by preaching pure Krishna bhakti.

The reason why I am saying all this is:

Well, it was the philosophy of Krishna Consciousness which attracted me to ISKCON and since some time now, I have been putting my energy into preaching. Maybe later (I mean with time), I will give my life and then my soul into this preaching business because I find it the most blissful.

I don't know if its proper to desire this: i.e. to become a powerful and unmotivated pure preacher like you. Pleases guide me in this regard.

Thanking you.

Your servant

Krishna Katha Das

Answer: This is a First Class Desire

To desire to be a powerful preacher like one’s spiritual master is first class. This is what the spiritual master wants that all of his disciples should desire. So please continue serving and preaching in this mood with great determination, enthusiasm, and patience. In this way your spiritual life is guaranteed to be a grand success and you will become empowered to deliver so many suffering souls of this world back to home, back to Godhead.

Today's Thought:

Save the World One Book at a Time

Srila Prabhupada has given us, his followers, the devotees of ISKCON, the duty to save the world. So how we will do what seems to be such an impossible herculean task? It is not difficult. Simply we must flood this planet in an ocean of Srila Prabhupada's books. Therefore our simple formula is to save the world one book at a time. Each time one of Srila Prabhupada's books goes out we move a little bit closer to the respiritualization of the entire human society. Therefore it is the duty of every ISKCON devotee to participate as much as possible in the distribution of Srila Prabhupada's books. If we keep distributing Srila Prabhupada's books, in due course of time the entire world will become Krishna conscious. Srila Prabhupada has confirmed this a letter he wrote to Satsvarupa Maharaja on 5 January 1976 in which he states:

"If this book distribution is managed properly, pushed on with great enthusiasm and determination and at the same time if our men keep spiritually strong, then the whole world will become Krishna conscious.

What should a devotee do if he is living in the association of devotees but still has deep attachments to a woman (in this case they are in a relationship ) and he doesn't want to leave her? And also he doesn't want to leave the association of devotees.

A devotee

Answer: Make Her a Devotee

Convince the woman to become a devotee. In this way you will be saved from the ocean of birth and death and the woman will be saved also.

Everyone is Looking for Eternal Existence

Everyone is looking for eternal existence. The difficulty is that they are all looking for it in the wrong places. Many foolishly think that some day we will attain this by the advancement of science. They do not realize that this entire universe in which we are currently residing will be completely destroyed as soon as Mahavishnu inhales. If we tell them this, they simply laugh and say that this is only a myth. Just see the depth of their ignorance. It's like being on the Titanic and telling a fellow passenger that the ship is sinking, who then refuses to believe it and thus refuses to get in a lifeboat and thus drowns.

We are not so foolish. We realize the temporary nature of this material world and we realize the eternal nature of the self. Thus we head straight for the lifeboat of Krishna bhakti to escape the sinking ship of this material existence.

Question: Can Animals Sin?

Are animals, who live by instinct, capable of sin? For instance, does a dog who kills a small child by biting its neck have to suffer a reaction for that particular vicious act?

Sincerely,

Joe

Answer: No, They Cannot

Animals cannot sin. They suffer no sinful reactions for whatever they do. Their animal birth is a sinful reaction for sins committed when they were human beings in a previous birth. By suffering greatly in their animal body they gradually burn off more and more of their sinful reactions so that in the future they will again get the chance of a human birth.

Begging Blessings for World Deliverance Mission

17 December 2016--After an incredibly ecstatic week-and-a-half of spreading Krishna consciousness in the beautiful island nation of Mauritius, today we are taking a five hour flight to South Africa to continue with our missionary activities there. In every nation on this planet people are suffering like anything due to not having yet awakened their dormant Krishna consciousness. Therefore our mission is to awaken everyone on this planet to their original natural pristine state of Krishna consciousness. Since we have no ability in this regard we are simply begging our beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta, to kindly bestow his blessings upon us so that we can be successful in our world deliverance mission, because without his blessings our lives are hopeless and the world situation is hopeless.

Question: How to Spiritualize Our Eyes?

Krishna must be more beautiful than human beings can ever imagine, and He must be more beautiful than all images, paintings and deities that we have created, as there are references in the scriptures where it says that Krishna's beauty is ever increasing. How should we develop our love and spiritualize our eyes to see Krishna as the most beautiful?

Karthick

Answer: Shelter, Initiation, and Obedience

To spiritualize your vision take shelter of the bona fide spiritual master, get initiated by him, and then be fully obedient to him. By faithfully following these three steps you will become qualified to see Krishna face-to-face, eye-to-eye.

Today's Thought:

Why Be a Star When You Can Be a Moon?

Lord Caitanya asked Ramananda Raya, "What is the greatest reputation one can have?" Ramananda immediately replied that a person reputed to be Krishna conscious is the most famous man in the world.

In this regard Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his book, The Teachings of Lord Caitanya:

"One who is famous as a Krishna conscious man enjoys eternal fame. In the material world, everyone is striving for three things: he wants his name to be perpetuated, he wants his fame to be broadcast all over the world, and he wants some profit from his material activities. But no one knows that all this material name, fame and profit belong to the temporary material body and that as soon as the body is finished, all name, fame and profit are finished also. It is only due to ignorance that everyone is striving after the name, fame and profit that are connected with the body. It is deplorable to become famous on the basis of the body or to become known as a man of spiritually developed consciousness without knowing the supreme spirit, Vishnu. Real fame can only be had if one attains Krishna consciousness."

So from these enlightening words of Srila Prabhupada we can understand that to be famous in the material world is only temporary and is thus not real fame. Real fame means eternal fame. All the so-called famous men of this material world vanish into oblivion in due course of time. But the fame of Krishna's devotee, which is based on his eternal spiritual identity and not his temporary material body, is eternal. So why aspire to be one of millions of flickering stars in the night sky when simply by becoming a pure devotee of Krishna you automatically become an eternally famous brilliant moon who can light up the entire night sky? This is real intelligence.

Question: How to Be Free From Anxiety?

Hare Krishna, I am always afraid of negative thoughts from my mind. I am always fearful whatever I do. My mind is always disturbed due to such fearful thoughts. Thus I can't concentrate on my duty and my regular work. Please help me. What can I do to be free from this anxiety?

Priya

Answer: Water the Root of the Tree

Your anxiety is due to the fact that you are taking the temporary duties associated with your temporary material body to be your real duties. Krishna tells us in the Bhagavad-gita to give up all other duties and accept only one duty, to become fully surrendered unto Him. Serving Krishna is like watering the root of the tree. And performing our material duties is like watering the leaves and branches of the tree. You will never nourish the tree by only watering its leaves and branches. This is your present anxiety-ridden position. But when you water the root of the tree by fully surrendering yourself at the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna, you will give full satisfaction and nourishment to the tree automatically. All of your material duties will be covered. In this way you will enter into a state of unlimited happiness and anxiety will never torture you ever again.

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

How to turn lust into love of Godhead? How does this work practically?

Your student,
Ruta

Answer: Follow the Regulative Principles of Bhakti

Srila Prabhupada has very nicely answered your question as follows:

"Lust is only the perverted reflection of the love of God which is natural for every living entity. But if one is educated in Krishna consciousness from the very beginning, that natural love of God cannot deteriorate into lust. When love of God deteriorates into lust, it is very difficult to return to the normal condition. Nonetheless, Krishna consciousness is so powerful that even a late beginner can become a lover of God by following the regulative principles of devotional service. So, from any stage of life, or from the time of understanding its urgency, one can begin regulating the senses in Krishna consciousness, devotional service of the Lord, and turn the lust into love of Godhead -- the highest perfectional stage of human life."

50 Years of ISKCON--100 Years of ISKCON

By Lord Sri Krishna's grace after 50 years of ISKCON's history I am blessed with the most sublime opportunity of still being an active member of this most vital-for-the-world's welfare International Society for Krishna Consciousness. It is now my 70th year. So where will I be when ISKCON reaches its 100 year? That would be my 120th year. Considering that the average life expectancy of a white bodied American male is 76 years, the likelihood of my still being here in my present body is practically nil. Although in a few very rare cases nowadays men have lived to be 115, that would be still be five years short.

But in any case, live or die, we have been ordered by Srila Prabhupada to make the entire world Krishna conscious. Therefore my desire is to take birth after birth as a servant of Srila Prabhupada's mission until the entire world does indeed become Krishna conscious. Ultimately, of course I will happily go wherever Krishna wants to take me at the time of my death. But if Krishna gives me a choice at the most auspicious moment of leaving my present material body, my choice will be to take birth after birth in this material world until all of the high court judges are wearing Vaisnava tilaka.

Question: Can a Woman Be a Guru?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I found these notes today when reading some documents written by one devotee for preparations of the classes. It was about the topic of women being a guru. I would like to share it with you and ask how to correctly understand it:

Women can be guru

In a letter to Silavati Devi (June 14, 1969), Srila Prabhupada wrote, “Now if you can induce all the women of Los Angeles to place an altar in their homes and help their husbands have peaceful, happy home life in Krishna consciousness, that will be very great service for you. The actual system is that the husband is the spiritual master to his wife, but if the wife can bring her husband into practicing this process, then it is all right that the husband accepts the wife as the spiritual master. Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said that anyone who knows the science of Krishna should be accepted as spiritual master, regardless of any material so-called qualifications, such as rich or poor, man or woman, or brahmana or sudra.”

This same point was confirmed again, years later (June 18, 1976), when Professor O’Connell of the University of Toronto asked Prabhupada, “Is it possible, Swamiji, for a woman to be a guru in the line of disciplic succession?” Srila Prabhupada replied, “Yes. Jahnava Devi was Nityananda’s wife. She became. If she is able to go to the highest perfection of life, why it is not possible to become a guru? But not so many. Actually one who has attained the perfection, she can become a guru. But man or woman, unless one has attained the perfection yei krishna-tattva-vetta sei guru haya. The qualification of the guru is that he must be fully cognizant of the science of Krishna. Then he or she can become a guru. yei krishna-tattva-vetta sei guru haya. In the material world, is there any prohibition that a woman cannot become a professor? If she is qualified, she can become a professor. What is the wrong there? She must be qualified. That is the position. So similarly, if the woman understands Krishna consciousness perfectly, she can become a guru.”

Your eternal servant,
Uttara devi dasi

Answer: Siksha Guru--Yes, Diksha Guru--No

Regarding female gurus, Srila Prabhupada clearly writes in his purport to SB 4.12.32:

"Dhruva had a feeling of obligation to his mother, Suniti. It was Suniti who had given him the clue which had now enabled him to be personally carried to the Vaikuntha planet by the associates of Lord Vishnu. He now remembered her and wanted to take her with him. Actually, Dhruva Maharaja's mother, Suniti, was his patha-pradarsaka-guru. Patha-pradarsaka-guru means "the guru, or the spiritual master, who shows the way." Such a guru is sometimes called siksa-guru. Although Narada Muni was his diksa-guru (initiating spiritual master), Suniti, his mother, was the first who gave him instruction on how to achieve the favor of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. It is the duty of the siksa-guru or diksa-guru to instruct the disciple in the right way, and it depends on the disciple to execute the process. According to sastric injunctions, there is no difference between siksa-guru and diksa-guru, and generally the siksa-guru later on becomes the diksa-guru. Suniti, however, being a woman, and specifically his mother, could not become Dhruva Maharaja's diksa-guru. Still, he was not less obliged to Suniti. There was no question of carrying Narada Muni to Vaikunthaloka, but Dhruva Maharaja thought of his mother."

Here we see that a woman can be a siksa guru (instructing guru) just as powerful and influential as the diksa (initiating guru). But still according to the principles of Vedic culture she does not assume the position of initiating guru. A wonderful example of this is my wife, Vishnupriya devi dasi, who is affectionately addressed by my disciples as "Gurumataji." She is indeed a very powerful spiritual master, as confirmed by many of my disciples and aspiring disciples who take advantage of her mercy to becomes solidly situated in Krishna consciousness. But being in a woman’s body she has no ambition to initiate disciples. Instead she trains my students how to take shelter of me as the initiating guru.

Regarding the example of Jahnava-mata, hers is a very rare case of when a woman initiated disciples. However, it should be noted she is the energy of Lord Nityananda, an eternally liberated soul who descended from the spiritual world to assist Lord Nityananda in His transcendental pastimes. All of her disciples were counted as disciples of her husband, Lord Nityananda, who had departed from this world.

In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 11, Text 21 as follows:

"Jahnava-mata is also within the list of Lord Nityananda's followers. She is described in the Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (66) as Ananga-manjari of Vrindavana. All the devotees who are followers of Jahnava-mata are counted within the list of Sri Nityananda Prabhu's devotees."

She was addressed as "mata" or "mother" and always kept her head covered. It's not that she kept her head uncovered, demanded to be be called "Prabhu", and made politics to be allowed to initiate disciples. She is worshipped very wonderfully in the following prayer by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura in this prayer from his Kalyana-kalpa-taru:

"O Jahnava Devi! By the power of your divine qualities, be merciful to this servant of yours. Dispel this illusion which torments me. And relieve me of material existence. Let me take shelter at your lotus feet. You are Nityananda-sakti, the divine energy of Lord Nityananda Himself. You are the guru of Krishna bhakti. Be merciful to me and grant me the shade of your lotus feet, which are like a desire tree. You have delivered countless abominable sinners. Please deliver me in the same way. Today, praying for your mercy, this lowly sinner falls at your holy feet."

We should all bow down at the feet of Jahnava-mata begging her for her mercy that she bless us with pure love of God.

The compassion of the great Vaisnava acharya Prahlada Maharaja is unfathomable. He said that he does not want to go back to Godhead unless he can take all of the suffering souls of this material world along with him. Just see how unlimited is the compassion of Krishna's pure devotee! He is not thinking of his own liberation. His only concern is how all the fallen, conditioned souls of this material world can be liberated. Such an unlimitedly compassionate devotee of the Lord does not have to be concerned about his own liberation because he is already a fully liberated soul even if he is still living here in this material world. Question: How Could We Fall From the Spiritual World?

Today my friend asked me this question, and this question is really always difficult to define to non devotees:

In the spiritual world, we are full of knowledge and full of bliss. So how can we desire material enjoyment? How can we come under the influence of maya or illusion while we are in the spiritual world?

Sanjay

Answer: Misuse of Free Will

If it were not for free will, we would be just be robots. We would not be persons. Since Krishna does not want to associate with robots, He wants to associate with people, He endows us with free will to leave Him at any time, if that is what we desire. We cannot be under the influence of maya or illusion in the spiritual world because it is not present there. Thus when we manifest the desire to try to enjoy separately from the Lord, we are already in the material world without even as much as a nanosecond's delay.

No matter how much the mundane writers may try to romanticize the miseries of this material world presenting them poetically, the bottom line is that to be caught up in the cycle of birth and death is a horrible, ghastly nightmare. But if one simply revives his dormant Krishna consciousness, he will experience unlimited bliss at every minute and no longer feel the excruciating pinches of the material nature. Even though I do not want to think about sex, still this desire of so-called enjoyment is very much in my thoughts. So how to get rid of it?

Your servant

Answer: Spit on Them

We have been maddened animals running after sex pleasure for millions of lifetimes. So it is not surprising that devotees may sometimes be bothered with a sexual impulse. Even the great Vaisnava acharya Yamunacharya mentions sometimes bothered by thinking of sex pleasure:

yad-avadhi mama ceta krsna-padaravinde
nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit
tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane
bhavati mukha-vikarah susthu nisthivanam ca

"Since I have been engaged in the transcendental loving service of Krishna, realizing ever-new pleasure in Him, whenever I think of sex pleasure I spit at the thought, and my lips curl with distaste."

Memorize this verse. And whenever you get lusty, recite it both in Sanskrit and in English. This will empower you to mentally spit at the degraded thought and walk away from it with a clean state of mind.

"Indeed, the very name Krishna, which is nonsectarian, means 'the greatest pleasure.' 'Krish' means 'greatest,' and 'na' means 'pleasure.' Krishna is the epitome of pleasure, and being part and parcel of Him, we hanker for pleasure. A drop of ocean water has all the properties of the ocean itself, and we, although minute particles of the Supreme Whole, have the same energetic properties as the Supreme."

The conclusion is that 99.999% of the world population is looking for Krishna or the greatest pleasure in the wrong places. Therefore they are frustrated and unhappy. Thus it is our duty to teach them where they can actually find Krishna and thus become satisfied.

Question: Why Do We Keep Forgetting Krishna?

Why do we keep forgetting Krishna in spite of always wanting to remember Him?

Your student

Answer: Bad Association

Our forgetfulness of Krishna is simply due to bad association. The simple solution is to always associate with devotees as much as possible. In this way our innate tendency to always remember Krishna will naturally be revived.

I am very pleased that every day now many sincere seekers of higher truth are joining our course. We have now gone beyond the 21,000 mark. The more that people take to Krishna consciousness, the more that all the problems of the world will be solved. So I am praying to Krishna that all the preaching programs of ISKCON can now expand exponentially to inundate the entire global civilization in pure Krishna bhakti as soon as possible.

Question: How Can the Body Be Like a Shirt?

In the Video for the Day on 1 December 2016, you said that the problem is due to bodily misidentification and you gave the example of a shirt. I am wondering how this example could be correct. We can wear our shirt and take it off at will. But we can't do that with our body. We can't take a body or get out of our present body at will.

Humbly request your divine grace to please clarify.

Yours sincerely,

Visvanatha das

Answer: Because When It is Old We Get a New One

You found fault with the analogy of a shirt, but this analogy has come from Krishna Himself. Analogies are not perfect in every detail, but they are similar enough to help us see a truth more clearly. You do in fact change your body just like a shirt. When a shirt becomes old and useless you get a new one. The same with your body. When it becomes old and useless you die and get a new one.

Just as a shirt can be removed at will, the body can also be removed at will by suicide. Suicide however is a sinful act of murder and should never be done. Our bodies belong to Krishna, and we thus have no right to kill them. They are meant to exclusively engaged in His service. One who commits suicide is forced by the laws of nature to become a ghost in his next life.

Krishna Consciousness Comes to Antarctica

By the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya, the Krishna consciousness movement has now also spread to Antarctica on 16 November 2016, the southernmost and coldest continent in the world.

The devotees who did this are Kesihanta Das, a Prabhupada disciple, and Trivikrama Das. The two held the first kirtana in Antarctica and distributed Prabhupada’s books there for the first time, placing the Bhagavad-gita As It Is in several Antarctic research stations.

What’s more, in bringing a murti of Srila Prabhupada himself with them, they have ensured that the ISKCON Founder-Acharya has now visited every continent in the world.

Question: My Friend Says Buying Meat is Not Sinful

Your thoughts and answers really reduce the distance between this hellish planet and Goloka. I am confident that with the blessings of my Guru Maharaja, His Holiness Jayapataka Swami, and your non-stop mercy on all the fallen souls of this planet, the darkness of ignorance which is covering the souls of this world will be removed and they will be shown the path to reach the abode of the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna.

One of my close friends is a non-vegetarian and he argues that he never kills any animal. He simply buys flesh from the market and eats it. Therefore he says he is not guilty of the sin of killing the animal and will not have to suffer any sinful reaction for such meat eating. Please guide me how to make him realize that what he is doing is sinful.

Your disciples' servant,

Sadbhuja Gaura Shyama Rama Das

Answer: If One Pays the Murderer, He Is Also a Murderer

If one does not directly murder someone but rather hires someone else to do the killing, he is an accomplice to the murder and is also guilty of murder. Similarly by buying the meat he is paying the killer. Thus he is also guilty of murdering the animal and must accept the hellish reaction for this sinful act.

The Devotee's Greatest Treasure

If one diligently, patiently, determinedly, and enthusiastically perseveres in pursuance of even seemingly impossible goals, by the grace of Lord Sri Krishna he can be successful. Therefore one should never abandon spiritual goals such as becoming a pure devotee of Krishna and making the world Krishna conscious. The devotee should always keep these goals tightly within his heart as his greatest treasure.

Question: How to Focus My Mind While Chanting?

Dear Gurudeva

All Glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I'm helpless, and I hope you can advise me how to improve my chanting. I find it hard to focus my mind and stay still when I'm chanting. Though if I have read Srila Prabhupada's books just before starting, it is easier. My mind is somehow really restless and although I read many hours a day, I can't successfully concentrate to those stories later, longer times. Do You have some tips how to be more successful in my chanting? I like to sing those holy names (also) when I'm doing something else, but chanting just seems to be hard sometimes, which I feel horrible about. But still I can't cry out Krishna's names, though sometimes I get some emotions, but soon lose them again. How to reach that right humble state of mind, though I see myself as Krishna's humble servant but just can't bring that feeling enough up (all the time when chanting)?

Your humble student

Noora

Answer: Chant Before Sunrise and Beg Krishna to Help You

It will be much easier for you to chant if you will rise early in the morning before sunrise, take your bath, and then finish all 16 rounds of japa before the sunrise. Plus if you request Krishna to help you in your chanting, just as you have requested me, He will reciprocate with you and help you to develop a taste for His holy names. Therefore every day before you start your japa pray to Krishna to help you enter into full absorption in His beautiful names.

Question: How to Serve the Lord's Mission?

Very often you are writing to help you in a mission to save the world by making it Krishna conscious. And on 1 December 2016 we got Thought For the Day which is called, "Help Us Make the World Krishna Conscious.“ For me it sounds like I have to do something big right now. Since I can't do so much right now, this makes me feel bad. Please, can You explain what are You meaning by asking this?

As I understand now, this mission is big and there is a lot to do: save ourselves by becoming Krishna conscious, maintain the temple, serve devotees and Deities, help in projects, make Sunday programs, talk with new people, go to harinamas, prasad distribution, etc. We have to try to become devotees and inspire others. That is in general what I have written, because in all these categories there are smaller ones where we can serve Krishna's mission. Am I correct? Please help me to understand your expectations.

Your servant,

Aurinta

Answer: One Step at a Time

We are all very tiny. None of us can do anything big. But if we consistently do the small things, that becomes big. Small things are things like reading Srila Prabhupada’s books, chanting our rounds, taking prasadam, and telling someone else about Krishna.

The cumulative effect of many of us consistently doing the small things is that eventually in due course of time the entire world will become Krishna conscious. Remember: Rome was not built in one day. It was built one brick at a time. We are now building something much greater than Rome, a global Vedic civilization. We cannot do it all at once, but we can do it one step at a time.

Do you get the idea?

Help Us Make the World Krishna Conscious

Disciples of Srila Prabhupada received the order from him to become gurus and deliver the whole world from illusion. This a inconceivably gargantuan task, and we are just a few persons. Therefore I am requesting all of you, my readers, to kindly assist us in our mission of making the entire world Krishna conscious. If we all work together co-operatively in accordance with teachings of Srila Prabhupada, this will be a tremendous blessing for the suffering humanity.

Question: How to Revive My Lost Taste for Bhakti?

Hare Krishna. What must I do to again find a taste for bhakti? Because previously I chanted sixteen rounds, and now I can only manage four rounds with great effort. And while chanting the mantra I feel like I’m carrying heavy luggage.

Trivikrama

Answer: Rise Early and Chant Hare Krishna Before Dawn

The easy formula for regaining your taste for bhakti is to rise early every morning by 4am, take your bath and chant 16 rounds of japa before sunrise. At this time of the day the holy name is much easier to chant because it tastes sweeter than the sweetest honey. Once the sun comes up the modes of nature become prominent and it becomes harder to focus on the holy names.
