Question: How Could Pure Soul Desire to Enjoy Separately?

I just want to ask that first when we were being created we were in spiritual world where there are no anarthas (bad qualities). We came to this material world because we wanted to enjoy separately from the Lord. But how the desire to enjoy separately came as there is no enviousness in the spiritual world?

Your most insignificant servant,
Nirmala Devaki Devi Dasi

Answer: Misuse of Independence

Because the ocean is salty, the drop of ocean of water is also salty. Thus we can understand that even though there is vast quantitative difference between a drop of ocean water and the entire ocean, they are still qualitatively one.

Similarly, the living being is tiny portion of the Supreme Almighty Personality of Godhead. Even though he is quantitatively vastly different, he is qualitatively one with the Lord. Thus because Krishna is supremely independent, the living beings, being part and parcel of Him also naturally possess the quality of independence. Since they have that independence there is always the possibility that they can misuse it. And if they misuse that independence by trying to become the Lord, they are given residence in this material world where they can be satisfied with the illusion they are God, or the center of all existence.

When You Are Feeling Low on Bhakti

When you are feeling depressed, down in the dumps, low on bhakti, what to do to come out of it? Count your blessings. Remind yourself how fortunate you are to know that Krishna is the Supreme Personality and to be situated on the pathway that is taking you out of this miserable material world back to your eternal home in the spiritual sky, the land of eternity, knowledge, and bliss. Your future is factually unlimitedly bright. So why should you be morose? There is no reason to ever feel down. So celebrate your unlimited good fortune and have an unlimitedly blissful day!

Question: I Don't Feel Like Living. Can You Help?

I feel like quitting my life immediately and attain liberation. I have no inspiration or motivation to continue living in this material world.

Can you please help in this regard?

Thanks,
D.

Answer: Fully Krishnize Yourself For Unlimited Bliss

Ending your life artificially by suicide will not liberate you from material existence. In fact, it will make your life even worse. You will take birth in your next life as a ghost and be forced by your material desires to haunt various people to try to enjoy material pleasure vicariously through their bodies.

So instead of putting an end to your life in a futile attempt to be liberated, you should end your material life by fully spiritualizing or Krishnizing your life. In this way you will attain unlimited bliss and all of your miseries will be totally gone. This is accomplished by fully surrendering unto Krishna through the transparent via medium of the bona fide spiritual master. This will bring you into an eternal ever-increasingly ecstatic existence.

Today's Thought:

Come Out of the Clouds of Illusion

Come out of the clouds of illusion into the brilliant sun of Krishna consciousness, which completely drives away all of the darkness of the ignorance that has now become all pervading in this age of Kali. The easy and most sublime way to do this is by regularly studying the Srimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavat Purana), in which it stated:

krsne sva-dhamopagate
dharma-jñanadibhih saha
kalau nasta-drsam esa
puranarko 'dhunoditah

"This Bhagavata Purana is as brilliant as the sun, and it has arisen just after the departure of Lord Krishna to His own abode, accompanied by religion, knowledge, etc. Persons who have lost their vision due to the dense darkness of ignorance in the age of Kali shall get light from this Purana."

Page by page, the more you dive into reading the Srimad Bhagavatam, the more you will become relieved from ignorance and misery and blessed with bliss and knowledge.

Question: I'm Not Initiated. What is My Position?

I'm not initiated, what is my position? I'm doing devotional service, chanting the holy names and reading Prabhupada books as per my capacity!

Prahlada

Answer: Almost Plugged In

Your position is like the photo below. You are close to being connected, but according to Srila Prabhupada's statement in the Nectar of Devotion you are not yet connected to Krishna. If you continue progressing with your current momentum, Krishna will give you a guru to whom you can fully surrender and thus become fully connected with Krishna.

Let's Turn History Right-Side Up

The world has become so much topsy-turvy that at the present moment it is completely up-side down. That which is good is considered to be bad, and that which is bad is considered to be good. Therefore, now a total respiritualization of the human society is necessary to make it right-side up again. We cannot do this alone. For this we very much need your help. So kindly join forces with us to the full extent of your abilities to assist us in bringing an all-encompassing spiritual revolution to this planet as soon as possible.

Question: Initiation is Required for Going Back to Godhead?

There are many people in the world who are Krishna conscious but are uninitiated. Where in the sastras (scriptures) is itstated that initiation is necessary to get liberation from repeated birth and death? Faith in holy names (sraddha) and chanting of holy names is not enough to get liberation? Before Srila Prabhupada coming to the West many were ignorant about Krishna consciousness. What about those who are still ignorant about Krishna consciousness. Do you equate them with uninitiated Krishna conscious devotees who are not eligible for liberation?

Hare Krishna.
Veerendra Ekbote

Answer: Yes

Srila Prabhupada has written as follows in his introduction to Nectar of Devotion:

"The connection with the spiritual master is called initiation. From the date of initiation by the spiritual master, the connection between Krishna and a person cultivating Krishna consciousness is established. Without initiation by a bona fide spiritual master, the actual connection with Krishna consciousness is never performed.”

Regarding whether faith is sufficient for liberation consider the various steps on the pathway to perfection:

Faith is the first step. Association is the second step. Initiation is the third step. Cleansing of the heart is the fourth step. Becoming solidly fixed is the fifth step. Taste is the sixth step. Attachment is the seventh step. Ecstatic emotion is the eighth step. And pure love of God is the ninth step. Perfection is achieved at the ninth step, not on the first step.

Uninitiated devotees who have come to step one or step two are far more advanced than those who know nothing about the process of Krishna consciousness. If they will continue practicing Krishna consciousness they will, in due course of time, pass through all the stages and achieve pure love of God.

Always Remember the Ultimate Goal

In the midst of so many varied activities as we practice Krishna consciousness, we must never forget that the ultimate goal of everything that we are doing is to awaken pure love of God within our hearts. By always remembering this, we will be able to execute all of our varied activities in the proper consciousness and thus quickly attain that sublime ultimate goal.

Question: Chanting 13 Crores of Rama Gives God Realization?

My only goal is God realization in this lifetime. For that I am using Lord Rama Nama chant both written and oral. I am planning to do very serious chanting very soon. I have few queries regarding that:

1) I understand from many sources that chanting 13 crores (130 million) names of Rama will lead to God realization. Is that true?
2) When and after how many counts does Rama Nama mechanical chanting and offense chanting turns to devotional chanting?
3) What are the starting indications of devotional chanting?

Jai Shri Sita Rama,
Thank you,
Aravind

Answer: God Realization is Not Mechanical

God realization is not mechanical that by chanting a certain number of God’s names you get liberated. It is the quality of your utterance that counts. If we can say the name of God even once with pure love, we are instantly liberated. But because we are not able to do that, we practice by chanting again and again so that gradually we can reach the point of purely calling out to the Lord in a mood of pure surrender. When one realizes who is his spiritual master and surrenders to him through the process of initiation, it is then that his chanting begins to take on a devotional quality. Chanting is best done in times and places when and where you can most fully absorb your mind in chanting and hearing the Lord's holy name.

Today's Thought:

Beyond Dogmatism

Sometimes those with flawed understanding describe the teachings of ISKCON Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, as being dogmatic, which means strongly presenting things as facts when indeed they are not actually facts. Nothing could be further from the truth. Srila Prabhupada clearly presents reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Regarding being dogmatic, Srila Prabhupada writes as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam 1.19.18 as follows:

"The Vedic knowledge is received perfectly by disciplic succession from authorities. Such knowledge is never dogmatic, as ill conceived by less intelligent persons. The mother is the authority to verify the identity of the father. She is the authority for such confidential knowledge. Therefore, authority is not dogmatic."

Materialists say that anyone who considers themselves to be absolutely right is dogmatic. But when we ask them if this is absolutely right, they are forced by their own philosophy to remain silent and are thus defeated.

We should be callous to such bogus criticisms which are themselves nothing but dogmatism, and we should always remain solidly situated on the path of Krishna consciousness.

Question: Do We Suffer the Reactions from Past Sins?

Hare Krishna Gurudeva,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada,
All glories to Sri Guru and Sri Gauranga,

In Sri Isopanisad Mantra 5, it is stated that we must face our past lives' reactions in this life. I didn't get it. By chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra all our past reactions will be gone I read somewhere. And in Bhagavad-gita 18.66 Lord Krishna states that He will take care of the sinful reactions of all surrendered souls. Please clarify me, I'm scared!

Your servant,
Prahlada.

Answer: The Fully Surrendered Are Freed from Their Karma

Only those who do not surrender have to suffer the sinful reactions from earlier in this lifetime and from previous lifetimes. Those who fully surrender to Krishna by taking initiation from the bona fide spiritual master and placing themselves fully under his divine instructions are freed the reactions to their previous pious and impious activities.

My Chosen Career Path

My first career choice as a young university student was to become an actor. For this purpose I was enrolled in the drama department at the University of Texas at Austin, But then, when one of the graduates of our school told us what it is actually like being an actor, I realized that was not for me. And then after being introduced to the path of self-realization I opted to renounce the world and adopt the career path of a holy beggar in India. On the way to India to begin my chosen career I realized that the perfection of renunciation was to also renounce renunciation. At that point I resolved that instead of leaving the world I would stay in it with the career path of a spiritual revolutionary fully dedicated to bringing a about a total respiritualization of the human society. So I reversed my travel direction. Instead of going east to India, I went west to San Francisco where I endeavored to bring a spiritual revolution to the human society. After two years of being unsuccessful in my attempt and seeing that the Hare Krishna movement was already successfully engaged in bringing about global respiritualization, I decided to join this glorious movement as a duly initiated disciple of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. This is the career path I have fully absorbed myself in for the last 45 years, and I will continue to do so until my last dying breath, or even birth after birth, if that is what Srila Prabhupada and Lord Sri Krishna desire of me.

Question: Shiva and Vishnu are One and the Same?

My Dear Respected Guru,

This morning I was hearing Vishnu Sahasranama (the Thousand Names of Vishnu) in YouTube wherein in the description it was written that Vishnu and Shiva should not be distinguished because they are one and the same. How is it possible?

Please clarify me in this regard.

Yours humbly,
Geetha Rao

Answer: No. They are One and Different.

Just because something is stated in YouTube does not mean that it is true. Just as goat can eat anything, any fool or rascal can post some nonsensical thing on YouTube. The standard for what is actually true is the Vedic wisdom, which clearly differentiates between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Vishnu is compared to milk and Lord Shiva is compare to yogurt (dahi). Yogurt or dahi is nothing but a transformation of milk. So in one sense Vishnu and Shiva are the same. The difference is that while yogurt can be derived from milk, it is not possible for milk to be derived from yogurt. So even though Lord Shiva is derived from Lord Vishnu, it is not possible to derive Lord Vishnu from Lord Shiva. This is the difference.

In spite of not even being sure how he could survive all alone in New York City, Srila Prabhupada came there in 1965 on the order of his spiritual master, His Divine Grace Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami Maharaja to introduce the science of Krishna consciousness to the English-speaking world. Answers by Citing the Vedic Version:

Question: All Gods the Same in Ancient Vedic Civilization?

Hare Krishna, please accept my humble offering of gratitude for everything I have learned from ISKCON during the course of my association with your organization. I would like to offer a complaint regarding something I have been seeing in some of the ISKCON's writings.

In several places, it is labeled an offense to chant the names of the demigods as if they were Krishna's names. Therefore, one should not chant "Durga" or "Kali" with the same level of importance as "Krishna". Yet, in several places, it is also claimed that ISKCON's culture represents the authentic culture of Vedic civilization.

I am not a scholar of the Vedas, but I have learned through my association with a local Hindu temple that the worship of goddesses plays an important role in Vedic culture. This is especially true of goddesses such as Sarasvati, the demigod of learning, and Gayatri, from whom the popular Gayatri mantra derives its name.

I find your strategy to be deceptive, because it is trying to promote bhakti yoga by associating it with one of the world's most ancient cultures, thereby contradicting the claim that bhakti is a universal phenomenon that transcends time and place. I am not asking ISKCON to rewrite any of Srila Prabhupada's books or edit any of Srila Prabhupada's lectures. However, can this please be noted whenever references are made to "the ancient Vedic civilization"?

Ramesh

Answer: Krishna, the Supreme God in Ancient Vedic Civilization

Thank you very much for your serving and appreciative mood. Your loving attitude is greatly appreciated.

So now as the humble servant of my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, I will try to respond to your concern in a pure, loving, and authoritative manner based on India's ancient Vedic scriptures

The Vedic civilization is indeed ancient. Within our particular universe it was introduced 155 trillion years ago when Lord Brahma was enlightened from within the heart by Lord Sri Krishna. After receiving this knowledge, Lord Brahma understood and glorified Lord Sri Krishna as the original and supreme person and the other gods as being His subordinate servants. In recent centuries of the Kali yuga (the age of quarrel and hypocrisy) long after the days of the ancient Vedic culture, the incorrect idea that all the gods are the same has been introduced. Unfortunately the pujaris at most of the Hindu temples nowadays only know about this recent concocted idea. They are not aware of the relationship between Krishna and the other gods that was common knowledge during the days of yore, the days of the ancient Vedic civilization. This is why it is of the utmost priority that we now educate the Hindu world and indeed the entire world regarding how to properly understand and implement the culture of pure devotion to the Supreme Person, which is the highest level of Vedic understanding, that was formerly the world religion, so that a new age of peace and prosperity can now dawn upon our greatly troubled Planet Earth.

When Miseries Become Non-Existent

In the Bhagavad-gita 2.65 Lord Krishna says that for one who is satisfied in Krishna consciousness the threefold miseries of material existence no longer exist. This is a fantastic most compelling reason to become Krishna conscious. Why continue suffering unnecessarily in material existence when you can, by the simply act of surrendering to Krishna, become unlimitedly blissful? This is real intelligence. Unfortunately in the modern age the entire world population has become grossly stupid. They are trying to be happy by satisfying the covering of the self, the material body, instead of doing that which satisfies the actual self who resides within the body. Therefore the entire global civilization has plunged into utter chaos.

Answer: For Revival of Krishna Consciousness

Srila Prabhupada said:

"This transcendental vibration of chanting of Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna , Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare is the sublime method of reviving our Krishna consciousness."

So chanting Hare Krishna and Hare Rama are both for the purpose of reviving our Krishna consciousness. This is my mood when chanting both Hare Krishna and Hare Rama.

Big Big Monkey, Big Big Belly

There is a Bengali verse:

Boro boro bandolel boro boro phet,
lanka dingake mata kore het.

"Big, big monkey, big, big belly,
Ceylon jumping, melancholy."

Srila Prabhupada explains it as follows:

"Hanuman, one monkey, he jumped over to Ceylon. So other monkeys also, they were very much proud that a monkey jumped over the ocean. And as soon as he was challenged, 'Can you jump over?' melancholy. Ceylon jumping melancholy. Big, big monkey, big, big belly."
(from a Room Conversation -- July 7, 1976, Baltimore)

This is a good warning for us that we should not become proud, thinking ourselves to be big, big advanced devotees because if we do so, we will not be qualified to cross over the Viraja Ocean and enter into the spiritual world. Therefore we should always consider ourselves to be lower than the straw in the street fully ready to offer our respectful obeisances to others. This humility will keep our hearts soft so our hearts can melt when chanting Hare Krishna.

Answer: Krishna, Balarama, or Ramacandra

“Rama” in the Hare Krishna mantra refers both to Krishna and Balarama as we as well as to Lord Ramacandra. So if one says that Hare Rama means "O Sri Krishna!" he is right. Similarly, if one says that Hare Rama means "O Sri Balarama!" he is also right. And similarly, if someone calls Lord Ramacandra by the vibration Hare Rama, understanding it to mean "O Lord Ramacandra!" he is also quite right. Those who are aware of the visnu-tattva do not fight over all these details.

After two days off from the road from our latest around-the-world preaching tour, today we are heading out to the North American ISKCON leaders' meeting in Houston, Texas being held at our beautiful, wonderful ISKCON Houston temple. It is imperative that ISKCON's leaders keep ISKCON in perfect connection with the instructions of ISKCON's Founder-Acharya His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. If ISKCON drifts away from Srila Prabhupada, it is dead. Question: Why Are We Servants?

I have question, regarding the question answered on 12.01.17 about the identity of the person, that we are eternal soul and servant of Krishna. How can I logically convince myself that I am servant, when no one wants to serve anyone, everyone wants to be master. We are forced to serve because of our current situation, but in reality no one wants to do any service.

People are not interested in material service (they are forced), and not even in spiritual, that's why there are only few people who take to spiritual life. So how can I be servant?

Question: Bewildered by Material Distress

Hare Krishna.

Please accept my most sincere obeisances. All glories to Sri Krishna. All glories to Srimati Radharani. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I'm a student and have been associating with ISKCON for the past six months. I've taken up chanting and I'm chanting 16 rounds. I'm currently facing some struggles and continuing failures despite putting in my best efforts in my career options which is bringing down my confidence and which is making it difficult to perform any of my duties. As a result this is pushing me into materialistic depression, which I'm struggling to overcome. Can I please get some advise on how to handle this and steps I can follow to uplift my spirits.

I pray to the Supreme Lord for your health and happiness.

Your humble servant.

Answer: Celebrate Material Distress as the Greatest Blessing

Material distress is actually a blessing in disguise. This is why Queen Kuntidevi was praying that she could always be in distress. She found that there is nothing more advantageous for her Krishna consciousness than material distress. So instead of being depressed and de-energized you should see these difficulties are the greatest mercy of Lord Krishna to remind you that this material world is a most miserable place. As soon as you learn the art of embracing your difficulties as the greatest benedictions you will be amazed to see that they immediately go away and you will be swimming forever in an ocean of unlimited spiritual bliss.

Question: Inquiring From More Than One Guru

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Thank you very much for your answer. I was reading "Krishna Book" and I found such text: "The spiritual master may be more than one. The spiritual master who instructs the disciple about spiritual matters is called the siksa-guru, and the spiritual master who initiates the disciple is called the diksa-guru. Both of them are My representatives. There may be many spiritual masters who instruct, but the initiator spiritual master is one."

This was my understanding about spiritual masters. Could you please explain if it is not correct to inquire from more than one spiritual master? Thank you.

Your servant,
Bhaktin Dovilé

Answer: Many Courts, But One Supreme Court

One is free to inquire from many spiritual masters. But by doing so you may sometimes get different opinions. But when you inquire from your initiating guru, his answer is final. Just like there are many courts that may give sometimes different decisions on a case. But when the case comes before the supreme court, that decision is final. Just as there are many courts, but the supreme court is one, similarly, there are many instructing spiritual masters, but the initiating guru is only one.

Super Ecstatic Initiation Ceremony in Brampton, Ontario

It is most auspicious that on 15 January 2017 in Brampton, Ontario, Canada I was blessed by Lord Sri Krishna and Srila Prabhupada with the sublime opportunity of giving five wonderful devotees entrance into immortality by formally initiating them as my disciples. These devotees are as follows:

1. Cleveland Mentore is now Caitya-Guru Das
2. Paramraj Bhatt is now Paramahamsa Das
3. Bindiya Bhatt is now Bhagavati Devi Dasi
4. Samantha Mentore is now Satyabhama Devi Dasi
5. Vandana Neeraye is now Vasundhara Devi Dasi

I also gave second initiation to three of my initiated disciples who are nicely following their initiation vows. This means that they are now formally ordained as brahmanas, members of the priestly class. These three disciples are Amogha Lila Das, his wife Patita Pavana Devi Dasi, and Vrindavanesvari Devi Dasi.

Two other devotees, Hemanga Das and his wife Govinda Mohini Devi Dasi, who previously had been awarded second initiation but had not yet participated in a fire sacrifice ceremony for that initiation also joined the ceremony. Thus we had a very nice group of thirteen devotees (including myself as the officiating priest, my wife as the leader of the Brahma-samhita chanting, and an assistant priest) participating in the fire sacrifice ceremony with a temple room packed full of devotees also participating as our audience. It was truly a most auspicious occasion.

Question: How to Conquer Shame?

Hare Krishna, Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

I would like to ask you about something I battle with constantly recently.

Sometimes when I feel that I am not serving Krishna as I should, the immediate feeling I sense is shame. Sometimes this shame breaks me down so bad I almost feel like I am unworthy to continue with a certain action (even though this action is related to Krishna consciousness). Can you elaborate on the topic of shame or feeling shame towards the devotees or the spiritual master?

Related to this I would also like to ask: Are pure devotees able to distinguish between a subtle advice given by the material mind, the advice or knowledge of the spirit soul himself or of Krishna guiding within us as Paramatma? How to differentiate between the three voices so we can be fully Krishna consciousnesses and follow the right advice?

With love and devotion,

Your servant

Answer: Be Grateful for Krishna's Kindness

While we should always feel that our service attitude is far from perfect, we should also feel very much blessed that in spite of our so many inadequacies we are getting the opportunity to engage in devotional service. This is why Krishna is called Dinabandhu, the friend of the fallen. In this way we should enthusiastically reciprocate with the loving kindness of Krishna.

Pure devotees can clearly distinguish between the proper guidance coming from Krishna and the nonsense misguidance of the material mind. Thus they always think, speak, and act perfectly in all times, places, and circumstances. To keep themselves always on the right track neophyte devotees should carefully follow the instructions of their spiritual master. Whenever they have some doubt about the proper course of action they should inquire from their spiritual master.

Worthwhile Goals for 2017

On 14 January 2017, in Toronto, Canada I gave a seminar "Worthwhile Goals for 2017." I focused on what should be the two spiritual goals of every devotee of Krishna: to become a pure devotee of Krishna and to make the world Krishna conscious. These two spiritual goals are mutually compatible because the more you become Krishna conscious, the more you automatically, by your example and your words, influence the entire world to become Krishna consciousness, and the more you give Krishna to others, the more you get Him for yourself.

I have one question. In these days I started to think a lot about a spiritual teacher. Maybe it's too early. I am about 6 months in Krishna consciousness, but I am often thinking, "How I can know if he would be my guru?" What do you recommend? On the Internet I haven't listened to any lectures for a long time, and in Lithuania I just saw a few teachers in the winter festival, but I didn't feel anything. Could you give some advice?

Follow the Path of Great Authorities

One has to follow the authorities. This is spoken by Maharaja Yudhisthira in the Mahabharata, Vana-parva (313.117):

Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah

"The pathway of the great authorities must be followed."

Otherwise, if we simply depend on our own interpretations of the scriptures, we can easily misunderstand what it actually means to follow the different scriptural injunctions and end up doing things which will keep us entangled in material existence. Also if we do no follow the actual great authorities, we can easily be misled by rascals who artificially pose themselves as great authorities. The great authorities are those who are coming in disciplic succession from Krishna and who present the teachings of Krishna exactly as He has given them in the Bhagavad-gita without any addition or adulteration.

Please accept my obeisances, Srila Gurudeva,

What is the harm if one chants the Hare Krishna Mahamantra all the time silently in his mind but without rosary (japa) bead?

Thanks,

Abhiram

Answer: You Are Not Able to Do That

But you are not able to do that. Your mind is filled up with an ocean of material thoughts in which you are currently drowning. That’s why, to help you concentrate, you need to audibly chant the Hare Krishna mahamantra as much as possible on chanting beads. This wonderful mantra given to us by God Himself is the boat that will carry you across this ocean of birth and death back to your original and eternal home in that most wondrous spiritual sky. Answer: They Soon Lose Their Strength

Whatever strength is possessed by the asuras, those who are demoniac, is simply due to their past pious activities. Because they are presently engaged in sinful activities they are depleting their strength and will soon be reduced to powerlessness. The devotees of the Lord, however, develop unlimited, ever-increasing spiritual strength because they always remain absorbed 24 hours daily in the service of the Lord. This is the why most powerful and influential people in the history are the moonlike devotees of Lord Sri Krishna, not the fools who flaunt the authority of the Lord and are compared to insignificant stars in the sky.

How to Make the Whole World Peaceful

Previously in Thought for the Day I have written about the simple formula given to us by Srila Prabhupada on 4 December 1968 in Los Angeles how to make the entire world peaceful. Considering the ever-increasing turmoil that is now breaking loose more than ever before on this planet the formula is desperately needed now more than ever by the rapidly disintegrating human civilization. Here's what he said::

"We do not expect that the whole population of the human society will be taking to this brahminical culture; but even if one percent of the whole population accepts this brahminical culture, Krishna consciousness, then the whole world will be peaceful. Not even one percent, less than one percent. It is so nice."

Since the world population 7,400,000,000, 1% of that is 74 million. So even if we can convince 50 or 60 million people to seriously take up Krishna consciousness, worldwide peace and prosperity will be the result.

Hare Krishna, Srila Gurudeva,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
All glories to you and Srimati Gurumataji.

After being connected to ISKCON for last 3-4 years and after chanting 16 rounds for past 1 year now I am foolishly asking this question - WHO EXACTLY AM I?? after so long.

Today morning these words hit me deep inside and I prayed to Krishna with tears in my eyes to please tell me Who I Am? and who is He and what is my real relation with Him. Srila Gurudeva, I beg at your lotus feet to please help in realizing that what is my real relation with Krishna? Does Krishna expand Himself for each and every soul to take care of us. Do I have some personal one-on-one relation with Him? And if yes, then what is that? How should I go deep in realizing this and how should I attain that stage when bodily sufferings will no more impact me. I want to know the truth and as you being a pure soul and a perfect devotee who has already realized everything and have personal relation with Krishna, please help me to know me what I was in the spiritual world and how can I realize this. Should I chant more rounds everyday or what should I do so that I get to know who exactly is me?

I beg for your mercy and help so that I without being affected with these material miseries can be a devotee and be Krishna conscious because till now I am not at all Krishna conscious. Please help me and bless me and please let me know the real truth.

Your aspiring servant

Answer: You Are Krishna's Eternal Servant

You are not that material body. You are instead the eternal spirit-soul, servant of Krishna. You have a personal one-on-one relationship with Krishna, but since time immemorial you have become completely separated from Krishna and your relationship with Him. Now by fully surrendering unto Krishna by becoming the disciple of the bona fide spiritual master you will become reinstated in your original position as His servant. Your specific identity will be revealed to you only when you become Krishna's pure devotee. Until then you should simply focus on being the completely sold out servant of His servant, the spiritual master. Therefore, the next step on your path of spiritual perfection is to accept initiation. Even after liberation you will still retain that identity of being the servant of your spiritual master.

Question: Was Sankaracharya a Bogus Incarnation?

Hare Krishna Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

You mentioned in your answer to the question of 9 January 2017 that God's teachings are always the same, and it is bogus incarnations that create confusion. So what about Sankaracharya who was an incarnation of lord Shiva? He gave rise to the impersonal philosophy which has afflicted so many people around the world that they are God or can be one with God thus creating tremendous confusion about whether God is a person or not . So was he a bogus incarnation ?

Your servant
Sridama das

Answer: He Appeared on Krishna's Order to Defeat Buddhism

Sankaracharya is not a bogus incarnation because He never claimed to be God. He was Lord Shiva who appeared on the order of Krishna disguised as a learned brahmana for the purpose of defeating Buddhism, which had become the religion of India at that time, and re-establishing Vedic culture in India. To do so, he taught a philosophy that was halfway between Buddhism and Vaisnavism. He was paving the way on the order of the Lord for the appearance of Vaisnava acharyas who would fully re-establish Vaisnava culture in India. However at the end of his life he taught pure Vaisnavism:

bhaja govindam bhaja govindam
bhaja govindam mudha-mate
samprapte sannihite kale
na hi na hi raksati dukrñ-karane

"You intellectual fools, just worship Govinda, just worship Govinda, just worship Govinda. Your grammatical knowledge and word jugglery will not save you at the time of death."

Question: What Is Acintya-bhedabheda?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada,
Please accept my humble obeisances,

Can you please kind explain deeply the principle of acintya-bhedabheda with example?

Your servant,

Harsh

Answer: Simultaneously, Inconceivably One and Different

Bheda means different. And abheda means one or non-different. When combined into one term they become bhedabheda, which means, "simultaneously one and different." And acintya means inconceivable. So acintya-bhedabheda means “simultaneously, inconceivably one and different.” This refers to the relationship between the Lord and the living beings. A drop of ocean water is qualitatively one with the ocean because it contains the same chemicals as the ocean. But it is quantitatively different from the ocean because it is only a small drop compared to a vast body of water. In a similar way the living being is qualitatively one with the Lord because both he and the Lord are eternal, full of bliss and knowledge, but quantitatively different because the while Lord contains everything within Himself, the living being is only a tiny spark with the vast reality.

When will the people of this material world learn that you can't be happy by thinking yourself to be the center of enjoyment, that you can only become happy when you accept God as the center of enjoyment? We are trying to convince them of this, but they are so stubbornly attached to this illusion of being the enjoyers that they refuse to even consider any other option. They are so proud and puffed up that instead of learning from the teachings of the sages, they find fault with these teachings. As long as they continue being offensive in this way, they will never realize the highest truth. Because of this obstinate stubbornness, they will be dragged by the laws of the nature into the animal kingdom in their next birth. It's sad. We try to save them. Question: Why Everyone Is Not Eager to Serve Krishna?

Hare Krishna Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.
All glories to you and to Gurumata.

Thank you again for the very inspiring daily emails which are short and right to the point.

Can you please guide me on the following questions?

From the few millions that visit ISKCON Centers all over the world and regularly hear lectures from the scriptures and on the philosophy, why is there not a long line of devotees to get initiated?

Also, why are all these millions of devotees visiting ISKCON Centers not inclined in performing regular devotional service?

What is the difference between devotional service performed before and after initiation?

Your servant,

Rajesh

Answer: They Take Him As Order-Supplier, Not As Master

You have asked why others are not taking initiation. But yet you have not taken initiation. Because you are setting the example of not getting initiated, you are teaching others by your example not to get initiated. So you are part of the reason that others are not getting initiated.

The millions who visit ISKCON centers are not rendering service because they are still foolishly taking God as their order-supplier instead of as their master.

Regarding initiation, Srila Prabhupada stated as follows in a conversation with his disciple, Madhudvisa:

Madhudvisa: The question was, Prabhupada, is it possible for a person to return to the spiritual world without taking initiation from a bona fide spiritual master?

Prabhupada: No, that is not possible. Therefore Rupa Gosvami said, adau gurv-asrayam. First business is to accept spiritual master. Adau gurv-asrayam. Who will train him? He is already fool, rascal. He must be trained up. So he must be trained up by the representative of Krishna.
—from a Morning Walk -- May 22, 1975, Melbourne

So without initiation your service is incomplete and imperfect because you are not obeying the Lord and the acharyas.

But for those fortunate souls who have mastered the art of diving deeply into the nectarean ocean of Krishna's holy names, sex pleasure is simply tenth class. It is of no interest to them. For them sexual pleasure is a downer, a dispiriting or depressing experience, because it drags their consciousness from the transcendental plane, which is eternal, full of unlimited bliss and knowledge, down to the material plane, which is temporary full of ignorance and full of misery. Who in their right mind would want to trade an ocean of unlimited bliss for an ocean of unlimited misery?

Question: What is Fanaticism?

What is fanaticism? I am new to Krishna consciousness. I have been told by other devotees that I am too enthusiastic about Krishna consciousness and am thus a fanatic. What is the proper understanding this regard?

New Devotee in Mendoza, Argentina

Answer: Acting Blindly Without Philosophical Understanding

Whoever advised you in this way is not properly situated in Krishna consciousness. They are holding on to their material desires and out of envy do not want to see a newcomer like you to becoming more spiritually advanced than they are. So such advice, which is not in accordance with the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, should be politely neglected. The fact is that the more enthusiastic you become about Krishna consciousness, the more you become a fixed up, advanced devotee. Exuberant enthusiasm is not fanaticism. Fanaticism means to act blindly without any philosophical understanding. As long your thoughts, words, and deeds are based on the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna as revealed by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, there is no question of fanaticism. Srila Prabhupada wrote me when I was a young very enthusiastic devotee back in 1971, "Continue enthusiastically as you are doing, and surely Krishna will bless you." So for the last 45 year I have always tried to faithfully execute this order that Srila Prabhupada so mercifully gave me. By doing so I am being constantly blessed by Krishna. Question: When Can I Get Initiated?

Respected Guru,

I am very much suffering in this material world. I want to leave all these and concentrate more on Krishna consciousness and get initiated by you. But I have a son who is aged 15 years and husband and my elderly parents. They all need my help.

So please let me know when can I get initiated by you?

Yours, humbly,
G. R.

Answer: When You Are Fixed in These Principles

If you will become solidly fixed in chanting at least 16 rounds daily of Hare Krishna japa mala every day along with the strict avoidance of illicit sex, meat eating, intoxication, and gambling, I will be happy to accept you as my initiated disciple and train you how to become fully qualified for going back to home, back to Godhead. This can done even while you remain at home serving your son, husband, and elderly parents.

Heading Out On a Mission to South America

3 January 2017--After two weeks in Australia today we are heading out 11,486 kilometers (7,137 miles) across the vast Pacific Ocean to South America to spread the rays of Lord Caitanya's benediction moon first in Mendoza, Argentina, and then in Santiago, Chile. All over the world everyone is suffering due to a lack of Krishna consciousness, and somehow or other due to the causeless mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya we have been blessed with the ultimate gift of Krishna consciousness. Therefore now it is our duty to share this supreme gift with the entire world to bring in a new age of peace and prosperity for all and to give everyone the training they need so that they will not take birth again here in this land of birth, death, old age, and so that they can be delivered back to their original home in the spiritual world.

Request: Instructions How to Progress

My Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet.

All glories to you!
All glories to Srimati Gurumataji!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I am your most insignificant servant.

Gurudeva, last Sunday we met with a road accident while going to Delhi. The accident was so terrible that chances of survival were less. But I was astonished to see, how miraculously we escaped with only some minor injuries. This is only because of the mercy of Lord Krishna and you that we were saved.

Gurudeva, by this accident I have realized that still I need to do more endeavors in practicing Krishna Consciousness. I am seeking your and Gurumataji's blessings to progress gradually in the spiritual path with sincerity and purity. Please give me some instructions.

May Krishna bless you and Gurumataji always with good health.

Your Insignificant servant,

Answer: Carefully Avoid These Ten Offenses

From: Sydney, Australia

My Dear Parashakti,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am very sorry to learn that you we were in a terrible traffic accident. At the same time I happy to learn that Krishna protected you so that you have only minor injuries. This is the result of surrendering to Krishna. He minimizes almost to nil the reactions from our previous sinful activities, giving us only a token reaction instead of the full reaction.

To advance nicely in Krishna consciousness strive diligently to chant Hare Krishna avoiding all of then ten offenses, which are as follows:

(1) To blaspheme the devotees who have dedicated their lives for propagating the holy name of the Lord.
(2) To consider the names of demigods like Lord Siva or Lord Brahma to be equal to, or independent of, the name of Lord Vishnu. (Sometimes the atheistic class of men take it that any demigod is as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. But one who is a devotee knows that no demigod, however great he may be, is independently as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, if someone thinks that he can chant "Kali, Kali!" or "Durga, Durga!" and it is the same as Hare Krishna, that is the greatest offense.)
(3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master.
(4) To blaspheme the Vedic literature or literature in pursuance of the Vedic version.
(5) To consider the glories of chanting Hare Krishna to be imagination.
(6) To give some interpretation on the holy name of the Lord.
(7) To commit sinful activities on the strength of the holy name of the Lord. (It should not be taken that because by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can be freed from all kinds of sinful reaction, one may continue to act sinfully and after that chant Hare Krishna to neutralize his sins. Such a dangerous mentality is very offensive and should be avoided.)
(8) To consider the chanting of Hare Krishna one of the auspicious ritualistic activities offered in the Vedas as fruitive activities (karma-kanda).
(9) To instruct a faithless person about the glories of the holy name. (Anyone can take part in chanting the holy name of the Lord, but in the beginning one should not be instructed about the transcendental potency of the Lord. Those who are too sinful cannot appreciate the transcendental glories of the Lord, and therefore it is better not to instruct them in this matter.)
(10) To not have complete faith in the chanting of the holy names and to maintain material attachments, even after understanding so many instructions on this matter.

It's also offensive to be inattentive while chanting. Anyone who claims to be a devotee of the Lord must carefully guard against the above offenses in order to quickly achieve the supreme success, pure love of Krishna, Krishna prema.

I hope this meets you in the best of health
and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

The Science of Self-Realization

Self-realization is the perfection of human existence. The person who attains self-realization perfectly understands his subordinate position in relation to the Lord as the Lord's eternal servant. When he is thus enlightened, he surrenders fully to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and is completely liberated from the clutches of the material energy. In other words, unless one surrenders to the lotus feet of the Lord, the material energy in its many varieties will continue to control him. Therefore those who are wise take to the pathway of self-realization in order to become free from the clutches of the material energy and achieve unlimited eternal happiness in a perfect loving relationship with Krishna and all living beings.

Opinion: I Feel That Chanting Is Very Boring

Hare Krishna Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to you and Srimati Gurumata!
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I pray Krishna that you get this mail in good health.

I feel chanting is very boring because its like repeating same mantra again and again. While chanting, I am not able to concentrate even on a single syllable and I start chanting in a wrong way. When my mother hears my wrong chanting she says to me I'm doing offence against Krishna. This makes me scared and I think its better not to chant instead of wrong chanting.

Your servant,
Priti Lakshana
(12 years old girl)

Answer: You Don't Realize You Are Associating with Krishna

That you feel chanting is boring shows that you are forgetting that Lord Sri Krishna is fully present in His name. Surely you would not be bored if you could directly associate with Krishna in Goloka Vrindavana. But that's exactly what you are doing when you chant the Hare Krishna mantra. You are directly associating with the most beautiful sublime original person, Lord Sri Krishna, in the midst of His most amazing pastimes. Just as Krishna is an ever-fresh youth whose association is unlimitedly exciting at every minute, similarly associating with Krishna in the form of His name is equally as thrilling as being with Him personally in Goloka Vrindavana because that is exactly what you are doing when you chant His name with love.

We all begin our chanting from the platform of offensive chanting. That is normal. From this beginning stage, if we keep chanting regularly, we will progress to the clearing stage, and finally to the offenseless stage in which we will be able to see Krishna face-to-face, eye-to-eye and revive our original loving relationship with Him in any one of five primary rasas. That you are afraid of making offenses tells me that you are a very sincere and wonderful devotee. And I admire you for this. Kindly note in this connection that even more offensive than offensive chanting is not chanting at all. Not chanting at all with take you to an animal birth in your next life, while offensive chanting with the desire to improve will gradually transform into offenseless chanting and take you back to home, back to Godhead.

So my request to you is that you should regularly and carefully chant Hare Krishna japa every day as many rounds as possible. In this way gradually you will become steady in chanting at least 16 rounds of japa mala daily and I will initiate you as my disciple and take you back to Home, back to Godhead.

New Year's Resolution: Make Whole World Krishna Conscious

New Years Day--Sydney, Australia. This morning I was asked to give a Srimad Bhagavatam class on following verse and purport (Srimad Bhagavatam, Ninth Canto. Chapter 10, Verse 53):

When Lord Ramacandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, was the King of this world, all bodily and mental suffering, disease, old age, bereavement, lamentation, distress, fear and fatigue were completely absent. There was even no death for those who did not want it.

PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada:

All these facilities existed because of Lord Ramacandra's presence as the King of the entire world. A similar situation could be introduced immediately, even in this age called Kali, the worst of all ages. It is said, kali-kale nama-rupe krishna-avatara: Krishna descends in this Kali-yuga in the form of His holy name -- Hare Krishna, Hare Rama. If we chant offenselessly, Rama and Krishna are still present in this age. The kingdom of Rama was immensely popular and beneficial, and the spreading of this Hare Krishna movement can immediately introduce a similar situation, even in this Kali-yuga.

-----------------------------

As I read over this verse and purport while the congregational chanting was going on, my eyes started to form tears as I marveled over this most amazing verse and purport. Srila Prabhupada is telling us that if we will offenselessly chant the holy name of God we can immediately make the whole world Krishna conscious. Therefore in my lecture I implored everyone to make this our new year's resolution that now in 2017 we make the entire world Krishna conscious by offenselessly chanting the holy names.

Hare Krishna, dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please, kindly accept my humble obeisances at Your lotus feet.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I see you are very strict. I like you so much. You are my hero. My beloved one, Gurudeva.

I bow down at Your wonderful lotus feet thinking about amazing pastimes in spiritual sky.

Thank you so much for inner inspiration and blessings, Srila Gurudeva

Your eternal servant,
Gandharvika devi dasi

Answer: This Is My Duty

Srila Prabhupada writes:

"No one can understand the import of the Vedas without having undergone a strict disciplinary vow and disciplic succession.”

So it’s my duty to teach you to be strict. Otherwise there is no meaning to my by being your spiritual master because without strictly following the path of bhakti, we can never understand the inner meaning of the Vedas.

New Year's Day at Every Second

On this planet today, New Year's Day is a big holiday celebrated all over the world. But for the Lord's devotees, as Srila Prabhupada explained on a morning walk on 3 January 1974 in Los Angeles, every day, indeed every second, is New Year's Day:

"Well, our every day is a New Year. Nava-navayauvana. Our Krishna consciousness is so nice, the more you advance, you see new year, new year. That's all. Nothing is old."

Because Krishna's devotee is experiencing Krishna at every minute and because Krishna is ever-fresh, for the Lord's devotee every moment is the most remarkable, exciting adventure of entering an amazing new world.

Question: Why Tobacco is Prohibited?

Hare Krishna.

To my dear teacher:

Why is tobacco prohibited in the Krishna consciousness movement?

Thank you for all your hard work.

Hare Krishna,

David from New Jersey

Answer: It Reinforces Bodily Consciousness

Srila Prabhupada was also asked by a Mr. Faill about why we avoid tobacco. Here’s how Srila Prabhupada answered him:

Mr. Faill: How about the tobacco question?

Srila Prabhupada: Tobacco is also an intoxicant. We are already intoxicated by being in the bodily conception of life, and if we increase the intoxication, then we are lost.

Mr. Faill: You mean things like meat, alcohol, and tobacco just reinforce bodily consciousness?

Srila Prabhupada: Yes. Suppose you have a disease and you want to be cured. You have to follow the instructions of a physician. If he says, "Don't eat this; eat only this," you have to follow his prescription. Similarly, we also have a prescription for being cured of the bodily conception of life: chanting Hare Krishna, hearing about Krishna's activities, and eating Krishna prasadam (food offered with love to Lord Krishna). This treatment is the process of Krishna consciousness.
