Thought For The Day: If You Are Not Part of the Solution, You Are Part of the Problem

London, UK

The whole human population at present is suffering from the disease known as bodily consciousness, thus being forced to take birth after birth in this difficult material world, repeatedly suffering the miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease, while perpetually rotating through the 8,400,00 differing varieties of species. The solution for this is to awaken their Krishna consciousness, which will liberate them from their material existence and restore them to their original deathless, eternally youthful identities in the spiritual world. Thus out of compassion those who are Krishna conscious are actively engaged in bringing this spiritual enlightenment to everyone, thus solving the world's problem. And those who are not Krishna conscious are part of the problem.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: How to Get Connected with the Hare Krishna Mantra?

How do I build a connection with the Hare Krishna Mahamantra while I chant it?

Seetaraman Iyer

Answer: Follow These Guidelines

ISKCON Founder/Acharya His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has explained very nicely in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila Chapter 8, Text 24 how we can become perfect in our chanting. If you will follow the guidelines listed below, you will become a fully self-realized soul:

It is very beneficial to chant the names sri-krishna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda before chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra because by chanting these two holy names — sri-krishna-caitanya prabhu-nityananda — one immediately becomes ecstatic, and if he then chants the Hare Krsna mahamantra he becomes free of offenses.

There are ten offenses to avoid in chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra. The first offense is to blaspheme great personalities who are engaged in distributing the holy name of the Lord. It is said in the sastra (Cc. Antya 7.11), krsna-sakti vina nahe tara pravartana: one cannot distribute the holy names of the Hare Krsna mahamantra unless he is empowered by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore one should not criticize or blaspheme a devotee who is thus engaged.

Sri Padma Purana states:

satam ninda namnah paramam aparadham vitanute
yatah khyatim yatam katham u sahate tad-vigarham

To blaspheme the great saintly persons who are engaged in preaching the glories of the Hare Krishna mahamantra is the worst offense at the lotus feet of the holy name. One should not criticize a preacher of the glories of the Hare Krishna mahamantra. If one does so, he is an offender. The Nama-prabhu, who is identical with Krishna, will never tolerate such blasphemous activities, even from one who passes as a great devotee.

The second namaparadha is described as follows:

sivasya sri-visnor ya iha guna-namadi-sakalam
dhiya bhinnam pasyet sa khalu hari-namahita-karah

In this material world, the holy name of Visnu is all-auspicious. Visnu’s name, form, qualities and pastimes are all transcendental, absolute knowledge. Therefore, if one tries to separate the Absolute Personality of Godhead from His holy name or His transcendental form, qualities and pastimes, thinking them to be material, that is offensive. Similarly, to think that the names of demigods such as Lord Siva are as good as the name of Lord Visnu — or, in other words, to think that Lord Siva and the other demigods are other forms of God and are therefore equal to Visnu — is also blasphemous. This is the second offense at the lotus feet of the holy name of the Lord.

The third offense at the lotus feet of the holy name, which is called guror avajña, is to consider the spiritual master to be material and therefore to envy his exalted position. The fourth offense (sruti-sastra-nindanam) is to blaspheme Vedic literatures such as the four Vedas and the Puranas. The fifth offense (artha-vadah) is to consider the glories of the holy name to be exaggerations. Similarly, the sixth offense (hari-namni kalpanam) is to consider the holy name of the Lord to be imaginary.

The seventh offense is described as follows:

namno balad yasya hi papa-buddhir
na vidyate tasya yamair hi suddhih

To think that since the Hare Krishna mantra can counteract all sinful reactions one may therefore go on with his sinful activities and at the same time chant the Hare Krsna mantra to neutralize them is the greatest offense at the lotus feet of hari-nama.

The eighth offense is stated thus:

dharma-vrata-tyaga-hutadi-sarva-
 subha-kriya-samyam api pramadah

It is offensive to consider the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra to be a religious ritualistic ceremony. Performing religious ceremonies, following vows and practicing renunciation and sacrifice are all materialistic auspicious activities. The chanting of the Hare Krishna mahamantra must not be compared to such materialistic religiosity. This is an offense at the lotus feet of the holy name of the Lord.

The ninth offense is described as follows:

asraddadhane vimukhe ’py asrnvati
 yas copadesah siva-namaparadhah

It is an offense to preach the glories of the holy name among persons who have no intelligence or no faith in the subject matter. Such people should be given the chance to hear the chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, but in the beginning they should not be instructed about the glories or the spiritual significance of the holy name. By constant hearing of the holy name, their hearts will be purified, and then they will be able to understand the transcendental position of the holy name.

The tenth offense is as follows:

srute ’pi nama-mahatmye yah priti-rahito narah
aham-mamadi-paramo namni so ’py aparadha-krt

If one has heard the glories of the transcendental holy name of the Lord but nevertheless continues in a materialistic concept of life, thinking “I am this body and everything belonging to this body is mine [aham mameti],” and does not show respect and love for the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, that is an offense.

--end of quote--

So if you chant Hare Krishna, carefully following these instructions given by Srila Prabhupada, you will achieve unlimited happiness.

Thought For The Day: Too Ambitious?

Austin, Texas USA

I was criticized last night by a materialist that my writing is too ambitious. Indirectly I accept this as a great compliment because in our Krishna consciousness movement our ambition is to lead this entire planet out of chaos. From my perspective, if I have any fault regarding ambition, it is that I am not ambitious enough. Srila Prabhupada instructed his American disciples that since America is the world's leading nation, his American disciples should become the world's leaders. What could be more ambitious that this, to aspire to become a world leader? We surely have our work cut out for us!

Question: Enlightened?

How is being enlightened - accepting everything that is as it is - compatible with being critical about the horrors of the modern world?

Answer: Intolerant of Suffering

Those who are actually enlightened fully dedicate their lives for making a spiritual revolution on this planet. They cannot tolerate seeing around them a world in which everyone is suffering due a lack of knowledge of the spiritual nature of the self.

Thought For The Day: Turning the World into a Paradise

ISKCON Austin, Texas, USA

In a conversation in Detroit, Michigan USA in 15 June 1976 my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, taught us that if we master the art of engaging our mind, words, anger, tongue, belly, and genitals fully in the service of the Lord that we can then make the whole world our disciples. So this is our mission. We want to attract the whole world to becoming awakened to the eternal identities as pure spiritual beings qualitatively one with God. If this can be accomplished this entire planet will be transformed into a paradise.

Question: Worship Shiva or Krishna?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

One question that always disturbs me a lot is that my heart adores Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna both. But I have heard that if one wants moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death) one should only worship Lord Krishna. Please guide me, Srila Gurudeva. What is right path? Please help me.

Thank you.

Thanks & Regards,
Aparna

Answer: Both

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Aparna,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Since Krishna orders us to worship His devotees, and since Lord Shiva is the topmost of His devotees (vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh), we worship both Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. Lord Krishna is worshipped as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and Lord Shiva is worshipped as His best devotee.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Are You Tired of Suffering?

Are you tired of suffering? If so, you should do yourself the ultimate favor and kick out all of your suffering right now, once and for all by fully surrendering yourself unto Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, under the guidance of the bona fide spiritual master. This is the secret of ultimate success, the success which dwarfs, outshines all other so-called successes, which are nothing but various cleverly disguised versions of defeat, relegating them into total, complete insignificance.

Thought For The Day: Don't Be Carried Away by Maya

Austin, Texas USA

The material energy is always there and can be a big distraction for our Krishna consciousness. So we have to always be very careful not to be carried away by material desires. This has been the downfall of many of a devotee, and if we are not careful, the same thing can happen to us. This is why we must always remain the completely sold out servants of our spiritual master. This will keep us safe under all circumstances. Those who fail to follow this principle fall by the wayside and and in due course of time lose their Krishna consciousness.

Thought For The Day: The Dr. Frog Scientists Have Got It Wrong

Austin, Texas USA

The scientists tell us that life has arisen from dead matter, but they are dead wrong. The actual fact is that life comes from life and that matter is a by-product of life. These foolish so-called scientists are like a frog in the well who tries to estimate the size of the ocean by comparing it with his well. He keeps expanding his chest asking if the ocean is this much bigger than his well. In this way he expands his chest further and further until it bursts and he dies. This is the position of the material scientists.

Austin, Texas USA

Anyone who begins his day by feelingly chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra (Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare) with full absorption will have the best day of his life every day. Question: The Stages to Perfection

Hare Krishna,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupad.

My Dear Gurudev,

Thank you for your kind offer to send the stages the devotee may go through before reaching the highest.

Your humble servant,
Suzanne

Reply: Steps from Sraddha to Prema

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Suzanne,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The stages of devotional service are mentioned in the Caitanya-caritamrita, Madhya Lila, Chapter 23, Texts 14 and 15 as follows:

adau sraddha tatah sadhu-
sango ’tha bhajana-kriya
tato ’nartha-nivrttih syat
tato nistha rucis tatah

athasaktis tato bhavas
tatah premabhyudañcati
sadhakanam ayam premnah
pradurbhave bhavet kramah

Synonyms:

adau — in the beginning; sraddha — firm faith, or disinterest in material affairs and interest in spiritual advancement; tatah — thereafter; sadhu-sangah — association with pure devotees; atha — then; bhajana-kriya — performance of devotional service to Krsna (surrendering to the spiritual master and being encouraged by the association of devotees, so that initiation takes place); tatah — thereafter; anartha-nivrttih — the diminishing of all unwanted habits; syat — there should be; tatah — then; nistha — firm faith; rucih — taste; tatah — thereafter; atha — then; asaktih — attachment; tatah — then; bhavah — emotion or affection; tatah — thereafter; prema — love of God; abhyudañcati — arises; sadhakanam — of the devotees practicing Krsna consciousness; ayam — this; premnah — of love of Godhead; pradurbhave — in the appearance; bhavet — is; kramah — the chronological order.

Translation:

“ ‘In the beginning there must be faith. Then one becomes interested in associating with pure devotees. Thereafter one is initiated by the spiritual master and executes the regulative principles under his orders. Thus one is freed from all unwanted habits and becomes firmly fixed in devotional service. Thereafter, one develops taste and attachment. This is the way of sadhana-bhakti, the execution of devotional service according to the regulative principles. Gradually emotions intensify, and finally there is an awakening of love. This is the gradual development of love of Godhead for the devotee interested in Krsna consciousness.’

Srila Prabhupada elaborates on these stages in the Narada Bhakti Sutra as follows:

The first requirement is that one should have sufficient faith that the only process for attaining love of Godhead is bhakti, devotional service to the Lord. Throughout the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna teaches that one should give up all other processes of self-realization and fully surrender unto Him. That is faith. One who has full faith in Krishna (sraddha) and surrenders unto Him is eligible for being raised to the level of prema, which Lord Caitanya taught as the highest perfectional stage of human life.

Some persons are addicted to materially motivated religion, while others are addicted to economic development, sense gratification, or the idea of salvation from material existence. But prema, love of God, is above all these. This highest stage of love is above mundane religiosity, above economic development, above sense gratification, and above even liberation, or salvation. Thus love of God begins with the firm faith that one who engages in full devotional service has attained perfection in all these processes.

The next stage in the process of elevation to love of God is sadhu-sanga [Cc. Madhya 22.83], association with persons already in the highest stage of love of God. One who avoids such association and simply engages in mental speculation or so-called meditation cannot be raised to the perfectional platform. But one who associates with pure devotees or an elevated devotional society goes to the next stage—bhajana-kriya, or acceptance of the regulative principles of worshiping the Supreme Lord. One who associates with a pure devotee of the Lord naturally accepts that person as his spiritual master, and when the neophyte devotee accepts a pure devotee as his spiritual master, the duty of the spiritual master is to train the neophyte in the principles of regulated devotional service, or vaidhi-bhakti. At this stage the devotee's service is based on his capacity to serve the Lord. The expert spiritual master engages his followers in work that will gradually develop their consciousness of service to the Lord. Therefore the preliminary stage of understanding prema, love of God, is to approach a proper pure devotee, accept him as one's spiritual master, and execute regulated devotional service under his guidance.

The next stage is called anartha-nivrtti, in which all the misgivings of material life are vanquished. A person gradually reaches this stage by regularly performing the primary principles of devotional service under the guidance of the spiritual master. There are many bad habits we acquire in the association of material contamination, chief of which are illicit sexual relationships, eating animal food, indulging in intoxication, and gambling. The first thing the expert spiritual master does when he engages his disciple in regulated devotional service is to instruct him to abstain from these four principles of sinful life.

Since God is supremely pure, one cannot rise to the highest perfectional stage of love of God without being purified. In the Bhagavad-gita (10.12), when Arjuna accepted Krishna as the Supreme Lord, he said, pavitram paramam bhavan: "You are the purest of the pure." The Lord is the purest, and thus anyone who wants to serve the Supreme Lord must also be pure. Unless a person is pure, he can neither understand what the Personality of Godhead is nor engage in His service in love, for devotional service, as stated before, begins from the point of self-realization, when all misgivings of materialistic life are vanquished.

After following the regulative principles and purifying the material senses, one attains the stage of nistha, firm faith in the Lord. When a person has attained this stage, no one can deviate him from the conception of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. No one can persuade him that God is impersonal, without a form, or that any form created by imagination can be accepted as God. Those who espouse these more or less nonsensical conceptions of the Supreme Lord cannot dissuade him from firm faith in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna.

In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna stresses in many verses that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But despite Lord Krishna’s stressing this point, many so-called scholars and commentators still deny the personal conception of the Lord. One famous scholar wrote in his commentary on the Bhagavad-gita that one does not have to surrender to Lord Krishna or even accept Him as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but that one should rather surrender to "the Supreme within Krishna." Such fools do not know what is within and what is without. They comment on the Bhagavad-gita according to their own whims. Such persons cannot be elevated to the highest stage of love of Godhead. They may be scholarly, and they may be elevated in other departments of knowledge, but they are not even neophytes in the process of attaining the highest stage of perfection, love of Godhead. Nistha implies that one should accept the words of Bhagavad-gita, the words of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as they are, without any deviation or nonsensical commentary.

If a person is fortunate enough to vanquish all misgivings caused by material existence and rise up to the stage of nistha, he can then rise to the stages of ruci (taste) and asakti (attachment for the Lord). Asakti is the beginning of love of Godhead. By progressing, one then advances to the stage of relishing a reciprocal exchange with the Lord in ecstasy (bhava). Every living entity is eternally related to the Supreme Lord, and this relationship may be in any one of many transcendental humors. At the stage called asakti, attachment, a person can understand his relationship with the Supreme Lord. When he understands his position, he begins reciprocating with the Lord. By constant reciprocation with the Lord, the devotee is elevated to the highest stage of love of Godhead, prema.

—end of quote--

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: Fools Rush In Where Angels Dare Not Tread

Austin, Texas USA

These who are foolish take this material body to be the all in all. According to them when their present body is finished they will cease to exist. They fail to note that they have remained the same person through so many changes of body. Our material bodies are like flowing rivers in which the molecules are changing at every minute. Therefore in spite of hundreds and millions of bodily changes we have always remained the same persons. According to the law of momentum the same thing will happen at the time of death, the body will change, but the self will remain. And this is confirmed in the revealed scriptures. At the time of death the self simply accepts another body. A simple person can understood this basic truth which is incomprehensible to our so-called big, big scientists. The real scientist is the one knows things as they are. He has realize the non-material nature of the self.

Thought For The Day: Turning the Hippies into Happies

Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada wrote a letter on December 3rd, 1971 to his disciple Damodar Das in which he said that this Krishna consciousness movement was turning the hippies into happies. I have first hand experience of this since I was one those hippies who became a happy. This was the great kindness of Srila Prabhupada that, by his unflinching loving mercy, thousands of hippies became his disciples.

In this regard Srila Prabhupada wrote to his disciple, Sridama Das on 8 July 1970:

"It is a fact that the hippies are our best clients. I had very good response in San Francisco during Rathayatra festival. I saw that they were taking up the chanting of Hare Krishna mahamantra very feelingly even without the presence of any devotee to lead them. They appreciated my lecture and I appreciated their attitude. They joined in Rathayatra very enthusiastically. So try your best to convince them by very nice preaching and in particular very nice Sankirtana party and distribution of our literatures."

Now we are praying that just as Krishna consciousness became very popular with the hippies, that now it will become popular with the entire world.

Thought For The Day: Intelligent People Reject Dogma

Austin, Texas, USA

These who are intelligent do not buy into the dogmatic, non-scientific creation myth that first there was nothing, which then transformed itself into a singularity, which then expanded itself into the world as we know it today. Those who accept this myth as science are living in fool's paradise cutting off the very branch on which they are sitting. Those who are sane use their common sense to understand that nothing comes out of nothing.

Answer: Yes

In the Bhagavad-gita Krishna or God says, “Inasmuch as they surrender unto Me I reward them accordingly.” Because He loves everyone equally this principle applies equally to both to His devotees and the atheists. Thought For The Day: What Can Be Done?

Austin, Texas USA

One gentleman named, Fabrice Tchernomoff, has recently written to tell me that only blind faith idiotic morons believe in God in the 21st Century. He states that science has proven that everything has come out of nothing. But actually neither he nor any scientist has any valid proof at all to support this outrageous theory. He has simply accepted on blind faith the theories of those who arrogantly defy God. And he has the most foolish audacity to label those who can scientifically prove God's existence as blind fools. Such persons as Fabrice are headed for the animal kingdom or lower in their next birth. We would like to save them, but they are not willing to be saved. What can be done?

Phil, it was through His name and His form in Denver, Colorado in the fall of 1968 that I directly experienced God's reality. By chanting Hare Krishna and meditating on this painting of Lord Sri Krishna (holding the flute) with Radharani (the topmost of all His devotees) I had a mystical experience of directly contacting Him and my life was completely transformed. Here in Austin, 17 February is this year the appearance day of Lord Nityananda. In a letter dated 21 January 1970 Srila Prabhupada very nicely describes a most wonderful pastime of Lord Nityananda in which we can see how merciful he is:

"Lord Nityananda, when passing on the street, saw a crowd of people howling at some incident, and on inquiry it was found that there were two rascals of the name Jagai and Madhai. They were always disturbing people in drunken condition. Nityananda Prabhu thought it wise that these two brothers may be delivered so that Lord Caitanya’s mercy could be well-known all over the world. When Lord Nityananda approached them He was immediately hurt by violent attack. On this incident Lord Caitanya became very angry and He called for His Sudarsana cakra to kill these debauchees. Lord Nityananda then implored Lord Caitanya not to kill Jagai and Madhai but to save them. By this time, Jagai and Madhai came to their senses and immediately they surrendered unto both the Lords and were delivered by the mercy of Lord Nityananda. So Lord Nityananda or Baladeva is the original Spiritual Master, and such a pure devotee sometimes takes the risk of life in order to reclaim a person who might have otherwise been rejected by the Lord. The devotee knows that the Lord wants all the fallen souls to come back to home, and therefore the devotees always try to induce the conditioned souls to take to Krishna Consciousness by various ways and means. Therefore the conclusion is that a devotee is more kind than the Lord Himself."

Thought For The Day: There Are No Real Atheists

Austin, Texas USA

We talk about atheists and there are truly millions of them. But in a higher sense there are no real atheists because everyone, even the most stubborn atheist, will sooner or later bow down to God. How is that? Krishna, who is God Himself, declares in the Bhagavad-gita that He is death. So show me one atheist who is not going to die. All of them will accept God in the form of death. They will all bow down to Him. But we devotees have a nicer form of God with whom we associate.

Question: Is God Ignoring Us?

How could a just and righteous God look at our world and sit by and do nothing?

Terry Bell

Answer: We Are Ignoring God

He is doing everything to rectify the situation, but we are so stubborn and foolish that we refuse to listen to Him or accept the solution that He is giving us. It’s like someone has a health emergency and the medics and the ambulance have come to save him, but he is so foolish that he refuses to unlock the door to allow the medics to come in.

Thought For The Day: Does the Universe Come From Nothing?

Austin, Texas USA

Dr. Stephen Hawking (see the video below) presents the theory that the universe came out of nothing. And he is supposed to be one of the world's leading scientists. But where is the evidence that even one thing can be created out nothing? Can the scientists produce even one grain of rice out nothing? No, they cannot. But now we are expected to have blind faith in the words of Dr. Hawking that everything has come from nothing. We are supposed to think that he has discovered the secret of the origin of the universe. This reminds me of the saying, "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread." If the people in general want to be fools, that is their business. I prefer to use some common sense and be at least a little intelligent.

Thought For The Day: Attracting All Living Entities

Austin, Texas USA

From the very beginning of my spiritual path in 1968 I have always had the desire to attract the whole world to the spiritual platform. So when I discovered in my reading the Srimad Bhagavatam in the summary study of the 25th chapter of its 5th Canto Srila Prabhupada's explanation that "Sankarshan" is a name of God which means "one who attracts all living entities" I was very, very happy. Of course I am not Sankarshan. I am Sankarshan Das, the servant of Sankarshan. But still that the particular Lord who I am named after has this specific quality of attracting all living entities is very encouraging to me. So now I am praying to my beloved Lord Sankarshan that He kindly bless me that I can now attract the whole world to His most glorious and auspicious Krishna consciousness movement.

Thought For The Day: The Whole World is Waiting

Austin, Texas USA

The whole world is simply waiting to be awakened from the sleep of maya or illusion into pure love of God, Krishna consciousness, because this is the only thing that will truly satisfy the self. Everything else is simply a state of mental agitation. Therefore those who take up the service of awakening the sleeping souls will experience the greatest joy and happiness as they compassionately engage themselves as messengers of the Supreme Lord. Such dedicated souls are especially recognized by the Lord as heroes and are given all protection and benediction as they engage in the topmost welfare activity of awakening the dormant Krishna consciousness, which is currently sleeping in the hearts of all beings.

So if you want to live the most satisfying, adventurous, exciting, heroic, and fulfilling life possible dedicate your life fully for awakening your Krishna consciousness and the Krishna consciousness of all. You will be riding at the every minute the crest of Lord Caitanya's mercy tidal wave for the unlimited benefit for all the suffering souls of this age.

Thought For The Day: There Are No Atheists

ISKCON Austin, Texas, USA

God is defined as the Supreme Being. And in this material world everyone, even the dog, considers himself to be the Supreme Being. Therefore atheists do not actually exist. Simply people have the wrong conception of who is God. That is the difficulty. But if one is honest, not in a cheating mentality, it is not difficult to know who is God. According the great Vedic authority, Parasara Muni, God is that person who excels all in possessing these six opulences: power, beauty, renunciation, knowledge, wealth, and fame. Anyone who claims to be God must demonstrate that he surpasses all others in the possession of these six opulences. This is the specific qualification of Lord Sri Krishna and the reason that we accept Him as God. We do not blindly accept Him as the Supreme Being. We only accept Him as the Supreme Being because He far surpasses all others in the possession of these opulences.

The atheists would have us believe that everything comes from nothing or from hydrogen, which comes out of nothing. But this is complete rubbish. Everything comes from something. Thought For The Day: Turn On Your Real Self

Austin, Texas USA

In this material world we are programmed from the minute we come out of the womb with a false conception of the self. The first thing we hear when coming out is, "It's a boy," or "It's a girl." We are immediately being programmed into a false bodily conception of what is the actual self. But when one is fortunate enough to come into contact with a bona fide spiritual master, he gets the knowledge that he is not his body, that he is instead the eternal spiritual being who just happens, according to his karma, to have taken a particular type of body here in this material world. The bona fide guru then teaches you how to live your life in such a way that you will never take birth again here in this material world. He teaches you how to regain your original form and identity you once had in the spiritual world before you fell into this problematic material existence.

This can be done by being a living embodiment of that truth in all of one's thoughts, words, and deeds and aggressively and intelligently propagating that truth with purity, intelligence, and enthusiasm to every corner of the world until one's last dying breath and being prepared to take birth after birth to do the same until the whole world accepts that truth.

Thought For The Day: Atheism Solidly Defeated

ISKCON Austin, Texas, USA

Just as Sir Issac Newton scientifically deduced the law of gravity by seeing an apple falling from the apple tree, we can also scientifically deduce by seeing thousands and millions of machines that have operators that every machine therefore must have an operator. Thus it is logical and indeed scientific to deduce that the gigantic cosmic machine, the whole in which we currently live, also requires an operator. To conclude that it does not is descending into sheer dogmatism. It is not at all being logical and scientific. Thus atheism is solidly defeated.

Thought For The Day: You Are What You Eat

ISKCON Austin, Texas, USA

If you kill a cow or pay someone to kill a cow by purchasing meat in the marketplace, your karmic reaction will be to become a cow and be eaten for every single cow who provided you with their meat during your lifetime. Even eating a carrot is killing and will give a karmic reaction. However if you will offer all of your food to Krishna before eating (no meat, fish, eggs, onion, or garlic allowed), by such eating you will not incur karma and you will become free from karma and make solid, steady advancement towards the perfection of spiritual realization, which will liberate you from the cycle of repeated birth and death. So now it's your choice what you will eat.

Question: Examples of Karma?

What are real world examples of Hinduism’s “Law of Karma”?

Navaneet Pandurangans

Answer: Meat Eater Gets Eaten

"Hindu" is a term coined by our Muslim brothers. It is not found anywhere in the Vedic scriptures. So it is not Hinduism’s law of karma. It is nature’s law of karma. One is example is someone who eats slaughtered meat. In their next life they will become an animal and the slaughtered animal they ate will become a human and eat them.

Question: Proof of God's Existence?

Is there any unbiased proof foe existence of God that does not rely on what a few thousand year old books say?

Phil Smith

Answer: Here It Is!

Absolutely! The proof is that nothing comes from nothing, everything comes from something. This fact can be scientifically, empirically verified. Every something comes from something, which comes from something, which comes from something, etc, etc. So when you trace the line of causality back to the original something, you have found God. The atheist counter argument against the existence of God is that there is an infinite chain of causality. But this argument can easily be defeated. Consider a row of dominos that are standing up. Even if there is an infinite row of dominos, one of them has to fall over on its own in order to set off the chain reaction of falling dominos. In theology this is called the unmoved mover.

(And by the way, what do you have against thousands of years old scriptures, which come from a time when the entire earth planet was peaceful, prosperous, and happy, a time when everyone lived long, healthy lives and there was interplanetary travel that did not depend on fossil fuel?)

Thought For The Day: Realizing the Highest Truth

Austin, Texas USA

I was recently asked, "How do you plan to attain spiritual enlightenment this lifetime?" When answering I remembered a conversation that my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, had with a lady reporter on 5 March 1975 in New York. She asked him "Swami, is there a chance that all your followers can realize the highest truth?" Srila Prabhupada replied, "They have already done. Otherwise, I am Indian, I am poor man. Why they are after me? You Americans, you are rich men. So I have not bribed them. These young boys, they are educated, qualified. Why they are after me unless they have realized?"

So I told this person that by the grace of my spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, I have already attained spiritual enlightenment 48 years ago.

AJ Kposowa

Answer: The Authoritative Version

There are the speculative versions of spirituality, which lead nowhere, in which one simply imagines that he has become spiritually enlightened. Such versions are simply a useless waste of valuable time. And then there is the authentic version of spirituality, which is given by God Himself in all of the authoritative scriptures of the world. The original scriptures are the Vedas, some of which go back millions of years. These most authoritative scriptures describe the spiritual awakening process in precise details breaking it down into a step by step system, which can easily be followed by anyone who sincerely desires spiritual awakening. It is this most authoritative system that I have been practicing and teaching for the last half a century. Question: Highest State of Enlightenment?

What is the highest state of enlightenment?

Dylan Henry

Answer: Pure Devotion in Krishna Consciousness

It is confirmed in the Padma Purana as follows: "Pure devotional service in Krishna consciousness is the highest enlightenment, and when such enlightenment is there, it is just like a blazing forest fire, killing all the inauspicious snakes of desire." The example is being given in this connection that when there is a forest fire the extensive blazing automatically kills all the snakes in the forest. There are many, many snakes on the ground of the forest, and when a fire takes place, it burns the dried foliage, and the snakes are immediately attacked. Animals who have four legs can flee from the fire or can at least try to flee, but the snakes are immediately killed. Similarly, the blazing fire of Krishna consciousness is so strong that the snakes of ignorance are immediately killed.

Thought For The Day: Why Does Love Exist?

Austin, Texas USA

Love exists because Krishna is so kind. And we exist so that Krishna will have someone to love. Therefore the purpose of our existence is simply to love Krishna. There is no other purpose for our existence. Just like a fish cannot be happy out of the water, we cannot be happy unless we love Krishna or God. So what are we waiting for? Let us all now, everyone all over the world, fully give our love to Krishna by following the instructions He gives us in the Bhagavad-gita regarding how we should love Him. This will be the perfection of our existence and the perfection of our entire global society. So let's do it now and convince everyone else to also do this.

Question: Biggest Problem With Your Religion?

As a fellow person of faith, what is one thing about your religion that you secretly think is problematic?

Elle Thedyn

Answer: Nobody Wants It

There is no such as “my” religion. Religion is one, to reconnect with the source of our existence. Just like a lamp has no illumination unless it plugged in, we remain dull and practically lifeless unless and until we reconnect with the source of our existence. The biggest problem I have is no secret. My problem is that 99.99% of the present day human civilization is disconnected from its source and that nobody is interested in being reconnected with the very ground and source of their being. This is the root cause of the myriad of problems and catastrophes that are torturing our modern day so-called civilized society. Thought For The Day: Conquer Your Mind, Conquer the World

Austin, Texas USA

Sometimes it is said that if one conquers his mind, he can conquer the world. What does this mean?

Conquering the mind is not child’s play. In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Sri Krishna states that it is more difficult to conquer the mind than it is to conquer the raging wind. But one who becomes highly spiritually elevated to the point of absolute spiritual perfection becomes such a powerful influence on this planet that the whole world will follow him. Such a person is known as a saktyavesa-avatara, a living entity who is empowered by God. Such a person can make the whole world Krishna conscious. In other words, he can turn the whole world into a spiritual paradise.
