Thought For The Day: Dive into the Ocean of Unlimited Bliss

Shah Alam, Malaysia

Why remain in a suffering condition pinched, and indeed tortured, by birth, death, old age, and disease when you can instead revive your dormant enlightened consciousness, your Krishna consciousness, and thus dive into and swim eternally in an ocean of unlimited bliss? This is real intelligence. The difficulty is that we are in the Kali Yuga, the age of gross foolishness, in which even the most learned, highly respected scientists, philosophers, and scholars are nothing but highly polished fools and rascals. This is why we should not take their guidance and should instead take the blessings and guidance of those who are enlightened with the actual wisdom of the self, the Supreme Self, and the perfection of the relationship between the individual self and the Supreme Self.

Question: How I Can Always Be in Goodness?

Dear Guru Maharaja,
Please accept my obeisances.

Thank you so much for your previous reply. I wanted to ask one more important question. Being in the material world I'm covered with the three modes of material nature (goodness, passion, and ignorance). Therefore sometimes I go with goodness, sometimes with passion and sometimes with dark ignorance. I'm literally disturbed because of this. My sadhana (devotional practice) gets polluted sometimes due to passion and ignorance. So my question is: How can I be always in goodness?

Radhe Krishna

Answer: Always Pray for Pure Devotion

From: Shah Alam, Malaysia

My Dear Radhe Krishna,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

At every moment beg Lord Sri Krishna to make you His pure devotee. This will always keep you out of the modes of passion and ignorance.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: Don't Be a Bewildered Fool

Shah Alam, Malaysia

We come into our present life possessing nothing and we also leave our present life possessing nothing. But in the middle we claim ownership and we sometimes fight also to support our false conception of ownership. In this way we become bewildered to understand what is our real identity and what is the real purpose of our existence. In this way we fail to be what we actually are, and thus just like a fish out of the water we become completely dissatisfied with life. And since we, as humans, are wired to require philosophical meaning to our existence, if we don't have it we invent or concoct some meaning to somehow or other get us by artificially until death drags us into another chapter of bewilderment. This is why we should hear from a bona fide spiritual master, that pure teacher who factually knows the meaning and purpose of our existence and who can liberate us from all material miseries by reinstating us in our original transcendental existence beyond our temporary material bodies.

Question: Purpose of Chanting Hare Krishna?

What is the intended purpose of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra?

Hazel Adkins

Answer: Revival of Our Original Identities

From: Shah Alam, Malaysia

My dear Hazel,

Please accept my blessings.

The purpose of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra is to revive our original identities that we once had in the spiritual world as pure lovers of God before we fell down into this material existence. Such chanting bestows the greatest benefit upon anyone who takes up this highest form of meditation on a regular daily basis.

Hoping this meets you well,

Thought For The Day: Blessings in Disguise

Hong Kong

Learned transcendentalists see the loving hand of Krishna blessing them at every moment in all times, places, and circumstances. In all varieties of situations: the good, the bad, the beautiful, and the ugly--they always see with enlightened vision how Lord Sri Krishna is constantly blessing and protecting them. For such persons even the greatest calamities are nothing but blessings in disguise, and chanting the holy names of God a prescribed number of rounds every day on their chanting beads is not a dry, meaningless ritual. Rather it is a celebration of the greatest magnitude, a reciprocation of love with that all beautiful, all powerful, all renounced, all wealthy, all knowing, all famous person, who is the source of existence, and who has unlimited names, unlimited divine qualities, and unlimited compassion.

Question: Body and Soul

What is the meaning of body and soul?

Harshit Verma

Answer: Car and the Driver

From: Pretoria, South Africa

My dear Harshit,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Lord Sri Krishna.

Body and soul is just like the car and the driver. The body is the car, and the soul is the driver. Just like the driver may drive different cars and still remain the same driver, in a similar way the soul transmigrates from body to body until he becomes spiritually perfect at which time he regains his original spiritual body in the spiritual world which is indeed his very self. At this time in the spiritual world the body and soul are one and the same.

Hoping this meets you well,

Thought For The Day: Preacher's Prayer

Pretoria, South Africa

The preacher of Krishna consciousness prays for his own spiritual perfection so that, with his every thought, word, and deed in all times, places, and circumstances, he can please his spiritual master and his most beloved Lord Sri Krishna in the best possible way. In this most loving service to his beloved Lord, he also prays for the deliverance of all living beings who are entangled in the cycle of birth, as evidenced in the following prayer of Sri Prahlada Maharaja which is quoted in the Srimad Bhagavatam, Fifth Canto, Chapter 18, Text 9:

svasty astu visvasya khalah prasidatam
dhyayantu bhutani sivam mitho dhiya
manas ca bhadram bhajatad adhoksaje
avesyatam no matir apy ahaituki

"May there be good fortune throughout the universe, and may all envious persons be pacified. May all living entities become calm by practicing bhakti-yoga, for by accepting devotional service they will think of each other's welfare. Therefore let us all engage in the service of the supreme transcendence, Lord Sri Krishna, and always remain absorbed in thought of Him."

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Qualities of a Bona Fide Spiritual Master?

Srila Gurudeva,

What are the qualities of a bonafide spiritual master? Please suggest some for guidance.

Yours,
Ramdas

Answer: Here They Are

From: Pretoria, South Africa

My Dear Ramdas,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The great Vaisnava acharya Sri Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has described the qualities of the spiritual master as follows:

The spiritual master is receiving benediction from the ocean of mercy. Just as a cloud pours water on a forest fire to extinguish it, so the spiritual master delivers the materially afflicted world by extinguishing the blazing fire of material existence. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is an ocean of auspicious qualities.

Chanting the holy name, dancing in ecstasy, singing, and playing musical instruments, the spiritual master is always gladdened by the sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Because he is relishing the mellows of pure devotion within his mind, sometimes his hair stands on end, he feels quivering in his body, and tears flow from his eyes like waves. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

The spiritual master is always engaged in the temple worship of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna. He also engages his disciples in such worship. They dress the Deities in beautiful clothes and ornaments, clean Their temple, and perform other similar worship of the Lord. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

The spiritual master is always offering Krishna four kinds of delicious food [analyzed as that which is licked, chewed, drunk, and sucked]. When the spiritual master sees that the devotees are satisfied by eating bhagavat-prasada, he is satisfied. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

The spiritual master is always eager to hear and chant about the unlimited conjugal pastimes of Radhika and Madhava, and Their qualities, names, and forms. The spiritual master aspires to relish these at every moment. I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

The spiritual master is very dear, because he is expert in assisting the gopis, who at different times make different tasteful arrangements for the perfection of Radha and Krishna's conjugal loving affairs within the groves of Vrindavana. I offer my most humble obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master.

The spiritual master is to be honored as much as the Supreme Lord, because he is the most confidential servitor of the Lord. This is acknowledged in all revealed scriptures and followed by all authorities. Therefore I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of such a spiritual master, who is a bona fide representative of Sri Hari [Krishna].

By the mercy of the spiritual master one receives the benediction of Krishna. Without the grace of the spiritual master, one cannot make any advancement. Therefore, I should always remember and praise the spiritual master. At least three times a day I should offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: Gross Mismanagement

Pretoria, South Africa

When the government leaders are not Krishna conscious, the citizens will suffer like anything from mismanagement. Just like here upon our arrival in South Africa there were no luggage carts in the airport arrival area. And now here, even at a top class hotel, our door is broken and the refrigerator does not work. To top it all off, as I write these words there is a power failure. We are here in a dark room with no light. We cannot worship Sri Sri Radha Damodar because there is no hot water to bathe them and no light to see them sufficiently to dress them properly. It is only because I have battery power in my computer (which is now down to 25%) that I am able to write these words. Plus I have been informed by one of my South African disciples that these power failures can go on for as long as eight hours. In Vedic culture there is no such mismanagement because qualified pure devotee brahmanas guide the administrators, who are also devotees, how to govern in such a way that everyone has full facility to awaken their dormant Krishna consciousness. We pray in the dark for that day when the world will have the light of Krishna conscious leaders.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: How to Turn on the Prayer Wheel?

My Dear Respected Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

How to turn on the prayer wheel 24 hours daily?

If I am not this body, how to give it up?

Should I ask somebody else any questions about spiritual life? The reason I ask is that they can tell different things than you or minimize your importance.

Sincerely,
Kaspars

Answer: Constantly Chant and Beg for Bhakti

From: Pretoria, South Africa

My Dear Kaspars,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Constantly chant Hare Krishna and beg Krishna to make you His pure devotee. If you can't do this 24 hours day, do this for 23 hours and 59 minutes per day. If you can't do that, do it for 23 hours and 58 minutes per day, etc, etc. In this way train your mind how to always be connected with Krishna.

By the laws of nature at any moment you may be forced by death to give up your present body. So you should philosophically detach yourself from it right now. Simply use it as an instrument to serve Krishna.

If others advise you differently from the bona fide spiritual master, do not take their advice. You should only take your guidance from the bona fide spiritual master and from those who instruct you in the same way that he does.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: May the Whole World Now Become Krishna Conscious

Pretoria, South Africa

The poor souls who are caught up in the cycle of brith and death are suffering like anything due to their being totally disconnected from their original all-blissful, fully cognizant eternal identities in the spiritual sky. Therefore we should always be praying for their deliverance. In this connection my prayer is:

"My most dear Lord Sri Krishna, bless me that now I can be Your absolutely pure devotee and that this whole world may now become fully Krishna conscious. If this is not possible right now, my Lord, at least I am begging You that this may happen before I leave my present material body. And if this also is not possible, then I beg You, my dearmost Lord, that I can take birth after birth here in this material world until everyone becomes Krishna conscious in fulfillment of the prediction given in the Brahma-Vaivarta Purana that within a 10,000 years period in the age of Kali the entire world will become filled up with devotees."

That verse is as follows:

kaler dasa-sahasrani
madbhaktah samti bhu-tale
ekavarna bhavisyamti
madbhaktesu gatesu ca

"For 10,000 years of Kali such devotees of Mine will fill the whole planet. After the departure of My devotees there will be only one varna [outcaste]." (Brahma-vaivarta Purana 4.129.59)

Thought For The Day: No Luggage Carts

Pretoria, South Africa

When we landed here in South Africa on the evening of 22 June 2019 and retrieved our luggage from the luggage carousel we were met with the difficulty of there being no luggage carts. Although hundreds of luggage carts we available outside the luggage retrieval area, because our arrival was an international arrival we were not allowed to out to get a luggage cart. And although I complained to many airport employees, they had no interest in helping us get a cart. When I went to an office to ask for help I was chastised for entering the office. So it was with great difficulty that we somehow managed to proceed with our many pieces of luggage to the arrivals area where the devotees were waiting for us.

It became very clear to me at this point that when the government leaders are not guided by Krishna conscious men, the resultant reaction is so much mismanagement filtering down to every level of the human society. This another one of the many reason why we must have a class of Krishna consciousness spiritual leaders universally recognized as the top rung of the social system. I pray that that day come as soon as possible. May it come soon.

Question: How to Get Money?

In my family we are suffering from financial problems. Our condition is very bad. Whatever we do we never get success. Can you give me some solution? How we will come out from this financial trouble? Please guide me.

Priya Solanki

Answer: Fully Surrender to Krishna

From: Pretoria, South Africa

My Dear Priya,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Lord Sri Krishna is also called Laxminath, the lord of the goddess of fortune. Therefore those who fully take shelter of Him have no financial difficulties. If we try to enjoy life separately from the Lord, sometimes we experience the special blessing of financial difficulty to help us remember that this problematic material world is not our real home, that our actual home is in the all-blissful spiritual world.

So now my best advice to you is that if you and your family will now fully dedicate yourself to loving Krishna by chanting His holy names as much as possible every day and giving up all varieties of sinful activities, all of your difficulties will be finished and you all will attain the greatest blessing of pure love of God.

In regards to chanting God's names, these are the names that you should chant as much as possible every day:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Immediate Transcendental Bliss

Solferino, Mauritius

Here is an excerpt from a wonderful letter Srila Prabhupada wrote to Minoru and Kenji from Los Angeles on 22 April 1970 in what was the first letter that he ever wrote to his students from Japan:

"I am very glad to learn also that you are feeling joy while chanting the mantra Hare Krishna. Yes, it is exactly like this. If anyone chants this mantra in good faith and in simple understanding, then surely this transcendental vibration will act immediately in spiritual bliss. Please therefore continue to chant this mantra as many times as possible throughout the day and night. I do not think there is any inconvenience or loss on your part if you do so all the time. Even when you are walking, you can softly chant Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, or even when you are on the bus going to somewhere you can also chant. When you are working with your hands you can also chant and when you are resting or going to take rest you can also chant. Even in your toilet room while taking bath you can also chant. In this way there is no limitation or restriction for chanting this Holy Name of God, Krishna, and His Energy, Hara. In doing this business there is no loss, but there is very great gain which is transcendental realization."

Anyone who follows these instructions will be living 24 hours in the dimension of pure transcendental bliss.

Question: Bad Things Happening to Good People?

Why do bad things happen with good people?

Sweta Sharma

Answer: They Were Bad in the Past

From: Solferino, Mauritius

My Dear Sweta,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Everyone gets exactly what they deserve. If something bad happens to a good person, this means that they are the getting the karmic reaction for something bad that they did in the past.

However, if one goes beyond being a good person to become a devotee of Krishna, Lord Krishna will free him from all the reactions that are due to come to him from his previous activities before he surrendered to Krishna.

Therefore those who are intelligent transcend even the realm of goodness by surrendering to Lord Sri Krishna and thus live forever in the realm of ever-increasing transcendental bliss.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: The Peace Formula Song

Solferino, Mauritius

Lord Sri Krishna wonderfully gives us the formula for perfect peace in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 5, Text 29:

bhoktaram yajña-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhutanam
jñatva mam santim rcchati

"A person in full consciousness of Me, knowing Me to be the ultimate beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities, the Supreme Lord of all planets and demigods, and the benefactor and well-wisher of all living entities, attains peace from the pangs of material miseries."

If the world population can simply acknowledge that Krishna, God, is the owner of everything, that everything is thus meant for His enjoyment, and that He is the most intimate well-wishing friend of all living beings, this will be the dawning of wonderful age of peace and prosperity all over the world. This is why I have presented Krishna's peace formula in the form of a song, which can heard by clicking here:

Saving the World from It's Darkest Hour

In London in 1973 Srila Prabhupada told his disciple Guru Das, "One day scholars will note how this Krishna consciousness movement saved the world in its darkest hour." Therefore the future of our movement is indeed very, very bright. We will factually in due course of time lead this planet out of the ever-increasingly hellish quagmire that it is sinking into more and more every day. Therefore we should patiently practice and preach Krishna consciousness to the very best of our abilities will full faith that this movement indeed will solve all of the world's problems.

Question: What Is My Higher Self?

I’m a spiritual soul. I don’t consider myself a human. I consider myself an energy. I wanted to ask you a personal question. I always come across spiritualism. I told myself that I have been here before and I’ll come back again in a different body. I have memories of old times like if I had a past life before and I could remember some events. I do meditation and I have dreams that I can’t understand. In one of my dreams, I saw a man wearing some kind of armor and his armor was golden. He told me, “Reach your higher self”. What does higher self mean? I have lots off questions. I need spiritual help.

Thought For The Day: When the Krishna Sun Rises Within Your Heart

Solferino, Mauritius

There is truly nothing more glorious, thrilling, wonderful, and ecstatic than having the Krishna sun arise within one's heart, driving away all of the clouds of illusion. In this connection Srila Prabhupada writes,

"As soon as the Krishna sun is arisen within one's heart, the darkness of materialistic speculations about the Absolute Truth and the living beings is at once cleared off. In the presence of the sun, the darkness cannot stand, and the relative truths that were hidden within the dense darkness of ignorance become clearly manifested by the mercy of Krishna, who is residing in everyone's heart as the Supersoul."

The method for qualifying for this most magnificent sunrise is to fully give yourself to Krishna under the expert guidance of the bona fide spiritual master.

Question: Why Photos and Videos of Kirtana?

Why do some members of ISKCON continuously take pictures or record videos during kirtanas?

Ozden Ergene

Answer: The Supreme Lord Incarnates in Kirtana

From: Solferino, Mauritius

My Dear Ozden,

Please accept my blessings.

Some people take tons of pictures of women because they are too lusty. Devotees like to photograph and video kirtana because kirtana is magical and mystical. The Supreme Lord Himself, the source of all existence, becomes factually present during kirtana for those who have the eyes to see Him. And those who don’t have such mystical vision will gradually get such mystical vision the more that they participate in kirtana and the more that they relish their memories of kirtana by seeing pictures and videos of kirtana.

Thought For The Day: The Little Sparrow Who Conquered the Ocean

Solferino, Mauritius

In his purport to Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 6, Text 24 Srila Prabhupada wonderfully teaches us the power of determination by telling us the story of the little sparrow who conquered the ocean:

"As for determination, one should follow the example of the sparrow who lost her eggs in the waves of the ocean. A sparrow laid her eggs on the shore of the ocean, but the big ocean carried away the eggs on its waves. The sparrow became very upset and asked the ocean to return her eggs. The ocean did not even consider her appeal. So the sparrow decided to dry up the ocean. She began to pick out the water in her small beak, and everyone laughed at her for her impossible determination. The news of her activity spread, and at last Garuda, the gigantic bird carrier of Lord Vishnu, heard it. He became compassionate toward his small sister bird, and so he came to see the sparrow. Garuda was very pleased by the determination of the small sparrow, and he promised to help. Thus Garuda at once asked the ocean to return her eggs lest he himself take up the work of the sparrow. The ocean was frightened at this, and returned the eggs. Thus the sparrow became happy by the grace of Garuda. Similarly, the practice of yoga, especially bhakti-yoga in Krishna consciousness, may appear to be a very difficult job. But if anyone follows the principles with great determination, the Lord will surely help, for God helps those who help themselves."

So let us all always remember this example of the little sparrow. She is our siksha guru, our instructing spiritual master, teaching us by her example how to accomplish even the most seemingly impossible things by being very, very determined.

(Today's Video for the Day also tells the story of our heroine, the little sparrow.)

Question: Benefit of Chanting Hare Krishna Unwillingly?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

If somebody takes nectar, whether willingly or unwillingly, then it is sure that he will become immortal. Similarly if somebody takes poison, whether willingly or unwillingly, then it is sure that he will die.

So if somebody chants the Hare Krishna mantra either willingly or unwillingly, what will be the result?

Answer: Helps to Attain Freedom from Birth and Death

From: Solferino, Mauritius

My Dear Ram Das,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The name of Krishna is as powerful as Lord Krishna Himself. There is no difference at all. Anyone, therefore, can take advantage of the holy names of Lord Sri Krishna even in the midst of greatest dangers. The transcendental name of Krishna, even though uttered unconsciously or by force of circumstances, can help one obtain freedom from the hurddle of birth and death.

I will be lecturing at ISKCON Pune this coming October from the 10th through the 14th. I hope that you will attend my lectures and that I can meet you then.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Initiating a Terminally Ill Cancer Patient

Solferino, Mauritius

After arriving here in Mauritius I was informed that there is a terminally ill devotee, Bhaktin Uma Ramdoyal, whose body is being destroyed by cancer and was asked if I was willing to initiate her as my disciple to facilitate her having the supreme spiritual perfection of going back to home, back to Godhead upon leaving her present body. Since she was formally recommended to me for initiation by Vijay Das, the temple president of our ISKCON temple in Phoenix, Mauritius, I accepted this proposal and initiated her in her hospital bed on 16 June 2019 in Phoenix. Before presenting her with her beads and giving her her spiritual name, Usa Devi Dasi, I gave a short initiation lecture, which can heard through this link:

Do Not Flush Your Future Down the Drain

Solferino, Mauritius

To act whimsically in service to our minds and senses is suicidal. It guarantees our going down to the animal kingdom in our next births. Therefore the only intelligent and the indeed the only sane thing to do is to engage our senses in the service of the master of the senses, Hrishikesha (Krishna). This is why it is stated as follows in the Narada-pañcaratra:

sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam
tat-paratvena nirmalam
hrsikena hrsikesa-
sevanam bhaktir ucyate

Bhakti, or devotional service, means engaging all our senses in the service of the Lord, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the master of all the senses. When the spirit soul renders service unto the Supreme, there are two side effects. One is freed from all material designations, and one’s senses are purified simply by being employed in the service of the Lord."

So my dear readers, please do not flush your future down the drain. Make your future glorious by engaging yourself fully in Krishna's service, thus guaranteeing that you will go back to home, back to Godhead upon leaving your present material body.

Comment: Jesus and Krishna Similarities

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I recently came across a video where many biblical references came across as starkly similar to references to Vaikuntha, Vrindavana, Svarga and Maya. I'm sure you must be aware about most of this already, but it was interesting to observe many similarities in the Bible regarding the destination after this body, which has been misinterpreted typically by speculative Christian scholars.

From: Mauritius

My Dear Suresh,

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

It doesn't surprise me at all because Jesus Christ is bona fide Vaisnava Acharya. In fact it was the example of Lord Jesus Christ that inspired me to become a devotee of Krishna. Jesus Christ is our spiritual master. That is a fact. We follow him strictly but the so-called Christians do not. He taught us that we should not kill, but these rascal so-called Christians are meat-eaters.

Thought For The Day: Death Can Come at Any Time

Solferino, Mauritius

This material world, in spite of all propaganda to the contrary, is a very dangerous place where death can come at any minute by many variety of ways. Therefore those who are intelligent remain always prepared for death by taking full shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, at every minute. If we are always prepared for death, we will not be caught off guard, and at every moment we will be experiencing the greatest jubilation of our eternal deathless existence.

Question: Essence of a Human Being?

Is the essence of a human being in their consciousness or in their memories?

Amy Potter

Answer: The Atma

My dear Amy,

Please accept my blessings.

The answer is “neither.” Just as sunshine is a manifestation of the sun, consciousness is a manifestation of the atma, the eternal spiritual being, who is temporarily residing within a particular material body. It is that atma who manifests consciousness who is the actual person.

There's nothing quite like traveling and preaching all over the world for spreading Krishna consciousness as far and as wide as possible. Thought For The Day: Initiating Two Disciples in London

London Gatwick Airport

On 13 June 2019 during a brief stopover in London I initiated a husband and wife couple as my disciples at the London Heathrow airport. During my initiation lecture I quoted from a lecture given in Los Angeles on 5 January 1974 in which Srila Prabhupada wonderfully describes how one becomes deathless by taking initiation:

"...deathlessness begins from the day of initiation. Adau gurvasrayam. As soon as you take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master, your point of deathlessness begins immediately. Immediately. And if you continue the advice and instruction of the spiritual master, or the sastra, then you become deathless. No more death."

So we advise everyone who would like to attain immortality that they should become initiated by the bona fide spiritual master and always faithfully follow his instructions.

Answer: Be Who You Really Are

From: London Gatwick Airport

My Dear Anonymous,

Please accept my blessings.

The meaning of life is to be who you really are, the eternal spiritual beings who live within the bodies, not the false bodily identity that the materialistic society forces upon us by propaganda that we are these bodies and when these bodies are finished everything is finished. The eternal spiritual being within is the servant of God and he relishes unlimited pleasure by always engaging himself in the service of God according to the instructions given by God.

Thought For The Day: Krishna's Devotee is Fearless

Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport

Krishna's devotee is fearless, even in the most dangerous situations, because he knows fully well that Lord Sri Krishna will always protect him in each and every situation. Srila Prabhupada's father, Gour Mohan De, gave him the name Abhay Charan, which means "one who is fearless by taking shelter of the lotus feet of Krishna." We must train ourselves how to always take shelter of Krishna at every minute. If we can do so, no anxiety will ever be able to penetrate our fearless hearts.

Question: Right Way?

Hare Krishna, Sir,

I am Saurabh from Delhi in India, and, Sir, I live separately from my parents, brother, and sister with my wife who belongs to a poor family. My family hates me and forces me to follow Christianity. But I believe in Krishna wholeheartedly. This is the main cause of dispute in my family. Sir, please suggest me the right way to follow.

Thank you. Hare Krishna.

Regards,
Saurabh Dhigan

Answer: Fully Surrender to Krishna

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas

My Dear Saurabh,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

As Jesus Christ is a great Vaisnava acharya, there is no difference between following Jesus and following Krishna. The difficulty is that these so-called Christians are not following Jesus. The Bible teaches us not to kill, but these so-called Christians are sending the innocent animals to the slaughterhouse and then eating their flesh. The devotees of Krishna worship Jesus as the son of God. They are the true followers of Lord Jesus Christ, not these so-called Christians.

What you should do is fully surrender yourself unto Lord Krishna, become His pure devotee. Here are the guidelines how to do this:

http://www.ultimateselfrealization.com/kc_at_home.htm

By doing this you will automatically also be a perfect Christian.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Second Appeal--Urgent Need in Puerto Rico

My dear Readers,

We got a good result from our first appeal. We now have $2,500 to send to ISKCON Puerto Rico. But they need much more help to rebuild their temple. So let's double our contribution to at least $5,000. So I am requesting everyone to contribute as much as possible for this very important cause. Kindly go to www.RebuildTemple.com to make your contribution. Click on where it says "Optional Use this Donation For" and and choose the ISKCON Puerto Rico option.

Here is a letter from the GBC of Puerto Rico:

--------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Vaisnavas Worldwide, Members, Friends and Supporters of ISKCON and the Hare Krsna Movement,

Please accept our humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This is your servant, Virabahu Dasa, a representative of ISKCON’s Governing Body Commission for areas in South America and the Caribbean, in particular for the Island of Puerto Rico.

In the month of September of 2017, there was major devastation caused in the Caribbean Sea by several hurricanes of unimaginable strength, one after the other in close succession.

Puerto Rico was hit the hardest by the last deadliest one of the season, Maria, which caused extensive destruction. As some of many consequences, even the most basic services were disrupted for days on end, adding to the many risks of life-threatening dangers that can easily manifest after catastrophes of this nature.

ISKCON’s Sri-Sri Radha-Krsna main temple in the Caribbean, up in the Gurabo hills of Puerto Rico, was not spared; it is also the abode of Sri-Sri Krsna-Balarama, Sri-Sri Gaura-Nitai, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura and Srila Prabhupada. And, in the city, our Hare Krsna Restaurant and the newly inaugurated Preaching Center were also not spared.

Arisudana Prabhu, the Temple President, succinctly had this to say:

¨Water was pouring even through the keyholes; the windows were shaking violently, and all the commotion of the destruction went on for more than twenty-four hours. It took us an entire day to clear the path to reach the temple; actually, what was left of the temple.

¨And what was left of it was the cause of shock, anguish and much sorrow. The temple is destroyed. Everything that for so many years we had kept and nicely maintained with "blood, sweat and tears" as a beautiful offering to Srila Prabhupada and Their Lordships, everything has been destroyed. Everything.

¨This is a small community and of reduced means. We can´t expect to rebuild and restore the temple to its previous splendor all by ourselves. We are going to need the help of our family, our greater Vaisnava family. I am hereby asking , imploring, please help us . Your contribution is crucial.

Please kindly donate.¨

In the name of the Vaisnava community of ISKCON of Puerto Rico, A Most Heartfelt Thank You! Hare Krsna.

Question: Meat Eating?

Can Hare Krishna devotees eat meat?

Lucky Idolo

Answer: Those Who Are Intelligent Strictly Avoid It

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas

Dear Lucky,

Please accept my blessings.

Meat means murder. Killing an animal is a criminal act punishable by the laws of nature. Thus the meat eater is going to get karmic reactions for each and every animal that he has eaten. This means that those who eat meat will become animals lifetime after lifetime to be killed and eaten by those very same animals that they ate. This is why the devotees of Krishna are intelligent enough to strictly avoid meat eating. Those who are lacking intelligence continue to indulge in this sinful habit and will be punished very severely by the laws of nature.

Question: How to Stop Masturbating?

How to get rid of my deep-rooted habit of masturbation going on from long time? Please guide me how to become free from this dangerous habit.

Anonymous

Answer: Be Krishna Conscious

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas

My Dear Anonymous,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

So far your difficulty for controlling the sex urge, my advice in this connection is that the more you become Krishna conscious, this sex urge can be checked. This is the only way for checking the sex urge. This nasty masturbation habit bleeds your body of vital energy and is especially detrimental for your brain. Semen is meant to be kept within your body as much possible so that it rises to your brain and nourishes your brain for deep spiritual understanding. It also fortifies your body against disease and promotes longevity.

As long as you remain on the platform of gratifying your genitals, you are relegating yourself to an animal birth in your next life in species such as dogs, hogs, or monkeys. Is this the future you want?

So now it is up to you to decide whether you want to be a lusty animal in your next birth or whether you want to go back to your original home in the spiritual world. And once having decided you must act in accordance with your decision.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Unearth Your Buried Treasure

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Don't be crazy, cheating yourself out of an unlimitedly ecstatic eternal existence by foolishly misidentifying yourself with your temporary material body, which is constantly being tormented by three types of miseries. Why punish and torture yourself when you could reward yourself by awakening your dormant Krishna consciousness, the dormant love of God that is now sleeping within your heart? Krishna consciousness is not an artificial imposition on your mind because you already it have buried deep within you. Now all you have to do is dig it up by regularly chanting the holy names of God with love.

Thought For The Day: Cow Dung Brains

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Why would someone punish himself by keeping himself in the cycle of the repeated miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease for unlimited millions and billions of lifetimes when he could instead bestow upon himself the ultimate benediction of returning to his original identity in the spiritual world? It would seem that getting out of misery and attaining unlimited bliss would certainly be what is sometimes called a "no brainer." In other words even if someone did not have a brain, they would be able to figure out this is what they should do. So why is that 99.99% of the world population is most foolishly keeping themselves is misery? Sometimes it is said that this is so because they have cow dung in their heads instead of brains substance.

Question: How to Get Free from Sex Attraction?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my obeisances.

How to improve the quality of chanting? My mind is not concentrated on the Hare Krishna Mahamantra. Is there any key point to improve our quality of chanting? And Srila Gurudeva, how to overcome the physical attraction towards the opposite sex? I sincerely want to feel Krishna's mercy and love.

Thank you,
Mona

Answer: Give All of Your Love to Krishna

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas

My Dear Mona,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

To improve the quality of your chanting, every day before you begin your japa intensely beg Lord Sri Krishna that you can purely chant His holy names by being completely free from any of the ten offenses, which are as follows:

(1) To blaspheme the devotees who have dedicated their lives for
propagating the holy name of the Lord.
(2) To consider the names of demigods like Lord Siva or Lord Brahma
to be equal to, or independent of, the name of Lord Vishnu. (Sometimes the atheistic class of men take it that any demigod is as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu. But one who is a devotee knows that no demigod, however great he may be, is independently as good as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, if someone thinks that he can chant "Kali, Kali!" or "Durga, Durga!"and it is the same as Hare Krishna, that is the greatest offense.)
(3) To disobey the orders of the spiritual master.
(4) To blaspheme the Vedic literature or literature in pursuance of the Vedic version.
(5) To consider the glories of chanting Hare Krishna to be imaginations.
(6) To give some interpretation on the holy name of the Lord.
(7) To commit sinful activities on the strength of the holy name of the Lord. (It should not be taken that because by chanting the holy name of the Lord one can be freed from all kinds of sinful reaction, one may continue to act sinfully and after that chant Hare Krishna to neutralize his sins. Such a dangerous mentality is very offensive and should be avoided.)
(8) To consider the chanting of Hare Krishna one of the auspicious ritualistic activities offered in the Vedas as fruitive activities (karma-kanda).
(9) To instruct a faithless person about the glories of the holy name. (Anyone can take part in chanting the holy name of the Lord, but in the beginning one should not be instructed about the transcendental potency of the Lord. Those who are too sinful cannot appreciate the transcendental glories of the Lord, and therefore it is better not to instruct them in this matter.)
(10) To not have complete faith in the chanting of the holy names and to maintain material attachments, even after understanding so many instructions on this matter.

It is also offensive to be inattentive while chanting.

Since Krishna consciousness is more satisfying that sexual pleasure, if you will simply focus on giving all of your love to Krishna at every minute, your feelings of sex attraction will naturally go away. It is a matter of the lower taste automatically going away by getting a higher taste.

You will feel Krishna's to whatever extent you give Him your love. So if you will give all of your love to Krishna, you will be swimming in an unlimited ocean of His loving mercy at every minute.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

On September 20th, 2017 Puerto Rico suffered one of the most devastating hurricanes in our history. Our temple was destroyed and after almost two years of this event, we are still struggling with its reconstruction. Some efforts had been made so far to raise funds, but not enough.

The reason I come to you for help and with hope, is because I experienced through your online “Ultimate Self Realization Course” that Krishna has blessed you with so many wonderful devotees and pious people all around the world. Please help us to get closer to our goal!

The total cost of the temple reconstruction in Puerto Rico is $875,000 from which we already have collected the amount of $140,000. The contractors are Mr. Dilip Shah (an Indian living in Puerto Rico) and Mr. Raivata Prabhu (a devotee living in Mayapur).

I beg your favor regarding this matter and appreciate any help you can provide for ISKCON Gurabo, Puerto Rico Temple.

Hare krishna!

Your servant,
Bhaktin Diana

Thought For The Day: From Sneering Passerby to Initiated Disciple

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Here is the wonderful story, told by him, of how my disciple Sriman Mahabhagavat Das became a devotee of Krishna:

One afternoon, as I walked out of a bustling Mumbai train station, I saw a shaven-headed monk standing close to a big pile of books. I approached him with a sneer on my face, fully intending not to engage with him. The book he held out caught my attention, and something made me stop for a brief moment. It was the Bhagavad-gita As It Is. I briefly gazed upon Krishna holding the reins of the chariot and Arjuna getting ready to shoot an arrow.

When I first saw the monk from a distance, all sorts of thoughts raced through my mind. "What a loser," I thought, and wondered if he'd flunked out of school, or if he'd graduated from university but had such low marks that he couldn't get a job. I thought of myself as the epitome of what every young man should be, or if they were not, then at least they should aspire to be. I was very proud of my excellent marks in school and my prestigious job, for which I had beaten thousands of other qualified engineers. I was proud of the money I had in my pocket and my stylish briefcase, and felt deep loathing and pity for the person I considered as a fool on the street. A small part of me, however, was also intrigued. Some months ago, having visited Tirupati with some friends, unexpected emotions had confused me. It was meant to be a vacation, to see some sights including this temple, but the hours and hours of waiting in line made me want to chant some mantras I'd been taught during my childhood. When I reached the inner sanctum of the temple, I'd become very emotional. Of course, I was hastily pushed out of the temple by the attendants and the crowds, and I dismissed the feeling as just some kind of fatigue and sentimental emotion.

I looked at the monk, threw my head back proudly and asked "How much?"
"Someone has donated, you can take,” the monk humbly answered.
"Really? Free?" I asked, puzzled by the fact that he wasn't out to make any money.
"Yes," he answered, looking me up and down, "For you, free."

I felt insulted that he didn't want my money. I grabbed the book from his hand, threw the book in my briefcase, and walked away quickly, without even so much as a look to say thank you. I'll read that book, I thought, to find all the faults, and show any shaven-headed fellows next time I met them, that they are just wasting their time with all this religious mumbo jumbo. That if they really want to succeed in life, I could show them how.

For several days I barely even touched the book. I'd leafed through the pages a bit, but was disappointed that I didn't immediately find any flaws. Many weeks later, I started off, but couldn't keep pace with the barrage of names, thoughts, ideas, and concepts that emerged on the pages. I decided to read only the translations first, then the Sanskrit word-by-word, hoping that surely I'd find faults in the translation, being proud of the little Sanskrit I had studied. Frustrated in my fault-finding endeavor, I resigned myself to reading the lengthy purports. I thought I had found a fault, but with no shaven-headed monks to argue against, I lost track of the "fault" and kept reading, thinking I should simply read the entire book and reserve judgment until the author had a proper chance to say what he wanted to say. All in all, I thought I had found 3-4 faults, some minor spelling errors, maybe some grammar, but nothing like I'd hoped, nothing by which I could turn the entire philosophy on its head and beat another one of those monks heads down in an argument. Disappointed, I quit.

Many months later, I thought I should read that book again, as it wasn't so bad. In fact even though I wasn't admitting it, I felt some kind of attraction to the book. Then I read it a third time, fourth time, fifth time, went on reading it over and over again, and my fascination continued to grow. But I didn't do anything much to act on what I had read. I continued my job, stuck with my friends and my materialistic life, switching jobs, changing cities, hopping continents, but almost everywhere I went, my Bhagavad-gita came along. Little did I know that I had been tricked by the most masterful trickster imaginable, Krishna!

A few years later, when I visited my close penpal of six years in Durban, South Africa, thinking that perhaps I wanted to marry her, visiting her parents to seek their permission and so on, one of the first places she took me to was the Durban ISKCON temple on Bhaktivedanta Swami Circle. As we entered the temple, some strange emotion came over me once more, some kind of very comfortable feeling, as if I'd stepped home, and wasn't sure if it was due to the place I was visiting or who I was visiting with. But the intense emotions of meeting the girl I was to marry soon overshadowed all that, and later I spoke to her very passionately about the downfalls of organized religions.

Some years later, as we continued our life journey together, we happened to land in Toronto, Canada, and the apartment we rented was walking distance from the Hare Krishna temple. We went a few times on Sundays, standing awkwardly at the back of the temple as the regulars mingled, sang, danced. One afternoon, as we were walking down Yonge Street, we saw some strange red shapes down the street with crowds of people. I don't know why we were so excited, but we recognized the chariots as Ratha yatra carts, and hurried to catch up with the procession. I recalled that one is supposed to pull on the ropes, so we both pulled for quite a distance. Then we learned that the procession was on its way to Center Island, a park setting. We hadn't been there before, so it was a pleasure to go to the island, see the colorful tents, get a delicious lunch, witness the cultural shows, take in the atmosphere and get in line for another plate of that tasty food. Over time, I began to make the connection between what I'd read in the book over the years, and what these people were doing.

"Yes,” I thought, these people are really honest followers of Krishna, As the regulars began to see me more and more at the temple, some of them began to insist that I start chanting Hare Krishna but I didn't listen to them. Around that time, Bhakti Marga Swami began to call upon me to act in his plays, and I did many odd roles: a servant, a rishi, one of Ravana' s ten heads, a demon in Ravana's army, a tree, a river, a horse, and so on. Also around that time, at a Sunday feast I met the speaker, a visitor who spoke about chanting, and said he had an Internet e-course and that anyone could ask questions and he'd answer personally. As a software entrepreneur, I was in front of a computer almost all day. I began by reading, and asking questions. Some questions were quite offensive actually, but the kind teacher didn't seem to take offense and had great patience with me.

He said that to realize the knowledge myself I'd have to chant Hare Krishna, but it was too hard and I thought I couldn't do it properly anyway. He said to chant on beads, and I happened to have some sandalwood beads, 108 in number on a string. So I began on those, one round, weekdays only, taking break on the weekends. In time, I thought I was missing out on the weekends, so I chanted then too. After some time I switched to tulasi beads. Slowly, I began to dislike eating out, and wanted to offer all food to Krishna before eating, and the food tasted better for it.

There was a long period of great turmoil, when our lifestyle went against what the Bhagavad-gita said, what my Internet guru said, what the speakers at the Sunday feasts said. Sometimes I'd follow, sometimes I'd not, sometimes because I was addicted, sometimes to keep up with social norms, sometimes because I was too timid to tell people my preferences, and at other times to keep up with my "image".

Then, without warning, hard times hit, and all of a sudden there wasn't enough money. Business partners fled, colleagues began to disrespect me, and we couldn't afford to do everything that we did before. Through all of this, the words in the Bhagavad-gita seemed to take on new and urgent meaning, our chanting progressively increased, and the devotees at the temple treated us with ever-increasing kindness and compassion. It felt like the only thing we could afford to do was go to the temple, so we did. Once again Krishna was drawing us closer.

My questions to my Internet guru, Sankarshan Das Adhikari, got more and more personal, and one day I asked a particularly offensive question to which he replied very tersely that I could choose to be a discredit, or be a credit, now the choice was mine. Then I realized I had a choice, to truly accept what was in the Bhagavad-gita, or follow my old materialistic ways.

As we got firmer in Krishna consciousness, amazing things started to happen, and it stopped mattering that we didn't have so much money. Even when the money started to flow back in, we weren't attracted to all those old ways of spending it! In fact, in following my guru's instructions I was beginning to develop a keen interest in distributing Srila Prabhupada's books, the very same activity that the brahmachari on the street in Mumbai was doing, over 12 years ago. While on the street, I still sometimes give away books for little or no money, recalling the great favor the brahmachari had done to me. I began taking a more active role in temple services, joined a kirtana band as a musician, participated in festivals, learned to wear a dhoti, attended many more festivals all over the world … our lives became full of activities we wouldn't have dreamed of just five years earlier!

Then, after deep reflection, I sought spiritual initiation from my Internet guru, Sri man Sankarsana Dasa Adhikari, And in May 2011, about 12-13 years after that fateful encounter with the kind brahmachari on the streets of Mumbai, I received initiation from my spiritual master in Austin, Texas.

I often look back upon that kind soul, unknown to me, my great benefactor, to whom love such an immense debt of gratitude, for having the compassion to distribute a Bhagavad-gita to me, even though I was so offensive toward him. I now know that he was the wealthy person on the street, and I was the beggar. That boy had chosen the right way, and I had fallen into material life, and every young man should emulate that great and humble devotee, not me. If I see him ever again, I don't know how I would express my gratitude. I would fall flat on the ground, grab his feet and beg for forgiveness for my arrogant, offensive thoughts and words. But I realize that the humble soul will never let me do something like that. Instead, I think I can please him by passing on what he gave me, and inundate this planet with Krishna' s message in every way imaginable. From sneering passerby to initiated disciple, what a long journey, and how wonderful has it been!

Mahabhagavata Dasa lives with his wife in Toronto, Canada, where he is a computer software industry entrepreneur and a Vice President at a leading high-growth software company. He is an active member of ISKCON's Toronto congregation and is trying very hard to take kirtana (www.gaura-shakti.com) and Srila Prabhupada’s books to everyone he comes across.

Question: Basic Steps on Spiritual Path?

What are the basic steps on the spiritual path? I heard the path is not for the faint-hearted.

Grace Arledge

Answer: Here's How

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Dear Grace,

Please accept my blessings.

The first step is to take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master who will then guide you how to become perfect by engaging all of your senses in the service of the master of the senses (God). The path of self-realization is not at all difficult if one takes complete shelter of the bona fide spiritual master.

Hoping this meets you well.

Question: How to Chant Japa?

Hare Krishna,

Millions of pranams (obeisances) to you for your leading mankind to eternity. I have the deepest urge that you will accept me as your disciple.

You have mentioned to chant japa to 16 rounds per day. My urge is to know how many times should I chant the holy name for each round.

Regards,
Tapas Chakraborty

Answer: Here's How

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas

My Dear Tapas,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Here is how to chant japa:

https://youtu.be/fpwmhOc_7qg

The entire Hare Krishna mantra, which is:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

is chanted 108 times on each round. The japa beads have 108 beads for chanting and one head bead, which is not for chanting. So you chant one Hare Krishna mantra on each bead except for the head bead.

What the video does not show is that when you go the 2nd round you turn the beads around go in the reverse direction not crossing the head bead. This is done after you finish each round.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: Krishna's Devotee is Your Best Friend

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

You don't have to worry any more about being cheated and exploited by duplicitous rascals who pretend to be your best friend but who are actually instead trying to take advantage of you for their own selfish purposes as much as they can get way with it. Krishna's devotees are birds of a different feather. They are your genuine well-wishers. Their only motive is they want to see that you become truly happy, free from all the miseries of material existence. This is why the scriptures mandate that everyone who is serious about getting out of the cycle of birth and death should seek out a bona fide spiritual master and take shelter of him by initiation. Those who are factually intelligently take advantage of this advice and make their lives perfect.

Thought For The Day: Human Civilization Devastated by Kali Yuga

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

By the influence of the age of Kali, the human civilization has been dragged down to a position lower than animals. Even though they proudly advertise themselves as great, the sad reality is that due to their thinking, speaking, and acting against the principle of devotion to the Supreme Person they will be dragged down to the animal kingdom in their next births. We want to save them, but the difficulty is that they are so much blinded by the influence of the Age of Kali that they cannot even begin to comprehend what is their actual situation. If we try to enlighten them, they think that we are deluded. So what to do? This is our dilemma. All we can do is try our best to enlighten them and beg Srila Prabhupada and Lord Caitanya that we can be successful in our endeavor.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Why Are We Here?

Dear Srila Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

What is the difference between meditation and chanting?

Why did Krishna create this world? What is His benefit to create this, and what is His purpose of creating this? I am so confused to know why we are here.

Thanks,
Mona

Answer: To Be Trained for Returning to Godhead

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas

My Dear Mona,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

There are many types of meditation. The highest form of meditation is to deeply absorb ourselves in chanting the holy names of God.

We came here to this land of birth and death because of a foolish desire we had to try to enjoy separately from Krishna. This material world is a place created by Krishna for educating us how we can become qualified to return to our original home in the spiritual world.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.
