Thought For The Day: We Desperately Need Qualified Leaders

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

At the present time our global civilization is suffering like anything due to the absence of proper leadership. The present so-called leaders are nothing but glorified cheaters utilizing their positions of leadership for their own self aggrandizement. What the world needs now more than ever before is qualified leaders who can guide the people how to live in perfect harmony with the laws of God and the laws of nature. Until that time when such leaders emerge and are accepted by the general population, the situation of this planet is going to continue becoming more and more horrible. Therefore we sincerely pray that a class of proper, highly qualified leaders will now become available in every town, village, city, hamlet, and home all over the world and that their enlightened guidance will now be accepted as the proper standard for human consciousness and human behavior for everyone all over the world. This is the mission of our Krishna consciousness movement.

Question: If Husband Wants Illicit Sex?

Hare Krsna, Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada

I hope you are well.

Do I have to wait to take initiation if I am ready but my husband cannot give up illicit sex? What is the solution as I cannot wait for so long?

Thank you,
Your servant

Answer: Teach Him the Higher Taste

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Student,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Since having illicit sex is against our regulative principles, as long as your husband is engaging you in illicit sex, your initiation with have to wait.

Therefore, since getting initiated is required for your going back to home, back to Godhead, you need to teach your husband how to experience the higher taste of Krishna consciousness so he will lose his taste for his nasty habit of illicit sex.

Your ever well-wisher,

Thought For The Day: The Perfection of Spirituality

ISKCON Austin, Texas, USA

Nowadays many people are into spirituality but they don't want to be a part of any particular religion. They want to perfect themselves spirituality without being caught up in some religious sect. The Krishna consciousness movement offers them exactly what they seek. We accept that one can become perfect by chanting any of God's names. If he lives a pure life free of sinful activities and regularly chants the holy names of God, he will become in due course of time spiritually perfect. It does not matter whether he chants Krishna, Allah, Rama, Jehovah, or Christ. We teach that through chanting any name of God one can become spiritually perfect. Therefore, we can understand that rather than being a particular religion, Krishna consciousness is the perfection of spirituality.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Why Some Say ISKCON is Not Hindu?

Bhagavad-gita and Lord Krishna are foundation pillars of Hindu Dharma. Lord Krishna says in Gita 4.7 and 4.8 that He appears in every age to protect Dharma. Then why do some people say that ISKCON is not a Hindu organization when it preaches Gita?

Vaisnava Charana Das

Answer: They Are Correct

My dear Vaisnava Charana Prabhu,

Please accept my obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

“Hindu” is a word that was coined by the Muslims. It is not found anywhere in the Vedic scriptures. The actual term is “Vedic religion,” the religious system based on the Vedic scriptures. So we agree with them that we are not Hindus. Personally I was born and raised as a Christian in the USA. When I joined this movement in 1971 and got initiated by Srila Prabhupada, I never thought that I was becoming a Hindu. I understood that by fully surrendering to Lord Krishna I was achieving the perfection of religion, transcendental to all designations of Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jew, Sikh, Jain, etc. and simultaneously the perfection of all religious designations.

Hoping this meets you well,

Your servant,

Thought For The Day: Bring Your Mind Under Control

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Lord Sri Krishna very kindly enlightens us in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter Six, Text 26 as follows:

yato yato niscalati
manas cañcalam asthiram
tatas tato niyamyaitad
atmany eva vasam nayet

"From wherever the mind wanders due to its flickering and unsteady nature, one must certainly withdraw it and bring it back under the control of the self."

This controlling of the mind means to fix the mind on Krishna. By doing so one becomes completely peaceful and happy. Srila Prabhupada elaborates as follows on this verse:

"The nature of the mind is flickering and unsteady. But a self-realized yogi has to control the mind; the mind should not control him. One who controls the mind (and therefore the senses as well) is called gosvami, or svami, and one who is controlled by the mind is called go-dasa, or the servant of the senses. A gosvami knows the standard of sense happiness. In transcendental sense happiness, the senses are engaged in the service of Hrisikesha, or the supreme owner of the senses -- Krishna. Serving Krishna with purified senses is called Krishna consciousness. That is the way of bringing the senses under full control. What is more, that is the highest perfection of yoga practice."

One who seriously practices this art of keeping the mind fixed on Krishna becomes supremely happy in all times, places, and circumstances.

Question: If We Can't Follow?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

When we are not able to follow the regulative principles due to unavoidable circumstances or due to the sheer load of duties, and if we are aware of this and ask for Lord Sri Krishna's mercy, what happens? Are we forgiven?

Thank you so much.

Thought For The Day: Don't Be a Foolish Idiot

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Don't be an idiot who foolishly spoils his human form of life by running madly after material sense gratification. Your human life is meant, by God's arrangement, for self realization, not for the maddened pursuit of material pleasures. If your only desire is material pleasure, it is better than you go down to the animal kingdom where you can unrestrictedly engage in material sense gratification without having to suffer any karmic reactions for doing so.

One songwriter hankering after sense gratification has sung, "Dogs run free, why not me?" If this is what he wants, he will get this facility in his next birth. However, those who are intelligent understand that all living beings in this material world must suffer the miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease. Therefore these intelligent persons focus their minds on Krishna or God, doing everything for His pleasure, so that they will attain God instead of dog. Instead of getting a dog's body in their next birth, they will attain their original spiritual form in the spiritual world after leaving their present material body.

Thought For The Day: How to Have Global Peace and Prosperity

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

In his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, First Canto, Chapter One, Text 4 Srila Prabhupada explains as follows:

"In this age, the congregational chanting of the holy names of the Lord is the prescribed method for waking up. The ways and means are most scientifically presented by Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and intelligent persons may take advantage of His teachings in order to bring about real peace and prosperity."

So may all the world leaders who desire peace and prosperity for their followers now take advantage of the congregational chanting of the holy names of God to bring the desired change in the world.

Question: Good Ways to Serve Krishna?

Dear Gurudeva,

What are good ways to serve Krishna ?

Your humble servant,
Deepali Mavani

Answer: Chant Hare Krishna and Take Prasadam

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Deepali,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Service to Krishna begins with the tongue. We engage our tongues in chanting Hare Krishna and tasting Krishna prasadam, the vegetarian foodstuffs which have been offered to Krishna with love and devotion.

So you should chant the Hare Krishna mantra on japa mala beads at least 16 rounds per day and restrict your diet to only eating Krishna prasadam. This will enable you to advance rapidly on the pathway of Krishna consciousness.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: 34,000 Subscribers

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Now we have a crossed another threshold. Lord Sri Krishna has blessed us that we now have more than 34,000 subscribers. This is our happiness when we see that more and more people are becoming connected with the science of Krishna consciousness. Why do we feel this way? The reason is that all of the world's problems are simply due to a lack of Krishna consciousness, and thus the more the world becomes Krishna conscious, the more that everyone will become happy. We do not like to see the world's population going through so much suffering when instead they could be tasting the highest pleasure at every minute.

Thought For The Day: Who is this Krishna?

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Krishna is not a myth, nor is He an ordinary historical personality. He is the Supreme All-Attractive Personality of Godhead. He is the oldest of all while simultaneously maintaining the form of a 16 year old youth. He is all-attractive because he exceeds everyone in all of existence by possessing unlimitedly all the qualities that are attractive, namely power, beautify, renunciation, knowledge, wealth, and fame. There is no one who equals or excels Him in the possession of these attractive qualities. This is why He is accepted by all enlightened spiritualists as being God, the original source of all existence. The perfection of our existence is to re-establish our long forgotten loving relationships with Him.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Was Krishna a Real Person

Was Krishna a real person who lived on Earth?

Ray Galindo

Answer: He Was and He Still Is

My Dear Ray,

Please accept my blessings.

Krishna is not at all a myth. Not only was He a real person, He is a real person who is living in the spiritual world, in the hearts of His devotees, and in the sound of His name right now. He is a real person who was present in what is now known as India 5,000 years ago. Twice a year I stay in the place in India known as Vrindavan where He grew up and displayed many pastimes up to the age of 16. These pastimes are described in great detail in a book called the Srimad Bhagavatam. During the battle of Kurukshetra, He spoke the famous Bhagavad-gita to His disciple, Arjuna. Krishna is so real that He is the source of all existence. Everything that exists is nothing but His emanated energy. To know Krishna and to love Krishna is the perfection of our existence and qualifies us at the time of death to enter into His eternal abode as one of His eternal associates. Thank you very much for your most wonderful question.

Hoping this meets you in good health,

Thought For The Day: The Flatterer and the Chastiser

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

It is sometimes said the flatterer is our worst enemy and our chastiser is our best friend. Why is it said like that? The reason is that we actually need a lot of correction in order to come to the proper standard of human consciousness, i.e. to awaken pure love of God within our hearts. So the next time you are corrected by the Lord's devotee instead of being disturbed, be grateful that someone has given you some special mercy.

Question: Vipassana Meditation With Hare Krishna?

Does anyone practice Vipassana-meditation taught by Sri SN Goenka and parallely chant "Hare Krishna Mahamantra" of ISKCON at a different time?

Randhir Prasad

Answer: All Perfection Simply by Hare Krishna

Hare Krishna chanting bestows the highest spiritual perfection. Therefore there is no need for the chanter to practice any other consciousness elevation systems. All perfections achieved by other systems are automatically included in the perfection that one attains by purely chanting Hare Krishna.

Thought For The Day: The Cure for Depression

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Many people who become depressed commit suicide. In 2017 in the USA 19,510 people were murdered, but more than twice as many people committed suicide. In that year 47,173 people died by suicide. And this for only one country!

The karmic results of suicide are disastrous. When one kills his gross body (commits suicide) his next birth is without a gross body. In other words, he becomes a ghost. Ghosts have gross desires but no gross body to satisfy them with. Therefore they haunt weak minded people trying to enjoy gross pleasures vicariously by using their bodies. This a very hellish situation indeed both for the ghost and for the person being haunted.

Therefore this Krishna consciousness movement is offering a very valuable service to the world because we can educate those persons who are contemplating suicide how to get free from their depression by reviving their lost loving relationship with Krishna.

Question: Cure for Depression?

I am very depressed. How can I remove all the negativity from my life?

Ayushi Mishra

Answer: Serve the Supreme Lord

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Ayushi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Depression is due to misidentification with the material body. When the eternal spiritual being, who is temporarily residing within a material body which is destined to die, misidentifies himself as being the material body this is naturally a very depressing situation. He will get free from this depression when he engages himself in his eternal spiritual duty of rendering loving service to the Supreme Lord, because this service liberates him from misidentification with the material body by reawakening his consciousness of his eternal spiritual identity. The art of how to do this service is learned from the bona fide spiritual master.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Is Krishna or Shiva the Supreme?

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

In India there is traditional controversy of who is the Supreme Lord: Lord Krishna or Lord Shiva. But for one who has scrutinizingly analyzed the Vedic scriptures in this connection there is no controversy. Regarding the relationship between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva, Srila Prabhupada explains as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, 4th Canto, Chapter 24, Text 30:

"It is said, vaisnavanam yatha sambhuh: Lord Siva is the best of all devotees. Therefore all devotees of Lord Krishna are also devotees of Lord Siva. In Vrndavana there is Lord Siva’s temple called Gopisvara. The gopis used to worship not only Lord Siva but Katyayani, or Durga, as well, but their aim was to attain the favor of Lord Krishna. A devotee of Lord Krishna does not disrespect Lord Siva, but worships Lord Siva as the most exalted devotee of Lord Krishna. Consequently whenever a devotee worships Lord Siva, he prays to Lord Siva to achieve the favor of Krishna, and he does not request material profit. In Bhagavad-gita (7.20) it is said that generally people worship demigods for some material profit. Kamais tais tair hrta jñanah. Driven by material lust, they worship demigods, but a devotee never does so, for he is never driven by material lust. That is the difference between a devotee's respect for Lord Siva and an asura's respect for him. The asura worships Lord Siva, takes some benediction from him, misuses the benediction and ultimately is killed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who awards him liberation.

"Because Lord Siva is a great devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he loves all the devotees of the Supreme Lord. Lord Siva told the Pracetas that because they were devotees of the Lord, he loved them very much. Lord Siva was not kind and merciful only to the Pracetas; anyone who is a devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is very dear to Lord Siva. Not only are the devotees dear to Lord Siva, but he respects them as much as he respects the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Similarly, devotees of the Supreme Lord also worship Lord Siva as the most dear devotee of Lord Krishna. They do not worship him as a separate Personality of Godhead. It is stated in the list of nama-aparadhas that it is an offense to think that the chanting of the name of Hari and the chanting of Hara, or Siva, are the same. The devotees must always know that Lord Vishnu is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and that Lord Siva is His devotee. A devotee should be offered respect on the level of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and sometimes even more respect. Indeed, Lord Rama, the Personality of Godhead Himself, sometimes worshiped Lord Siva. If a devotee is worshiped by the Lord, why should a devotee not be worshiped by other devotees on the same level with the Lord? This is the conclusion. From this verse it appears that Lord Siva blesses the asuras simply for the sake of formality. Actually he loves one who is devoted to the Supreme Personality of Godhead."

After reading and understanding what Srila Prabhupada has written above, we can clearly see why is really no controversy at all.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Why Not Accept Lord Shiva as the Supreme?

Nameste, As we all know that all the puranas including bhagwatam , Vishnu puran, Shiva puran and Shakti puran were written by Ved Vyasa and in bhagwatam he writes Lord Krishna is the supreme, in Vishnu purana he writes Lord Vishnu is supreme, in Shiva puran he writes about how lord Shiva is the supreme and is the cause of all causes and in Shakti puran he writes that Devi Shakti is the supreme who created shiv ,Vishnu and Brahma. So, it means that Lord Shiva ,Vishnu, Krishna and Shakti are equally supreme,so why don't we say that there is no difference between Shiva and Krishna , and why only to see lord Shiva as a param bhakta of Krishna and not supreme ?

Rahul Gautam

Answer: Vedas Conclude Krishna is the Supreme

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Rahul,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Lord Brahma clearly describes in the Brahma-samhita that just as yogurt (dahi) can be derived from milk and that milk cannot be derived from yogurt (dahi), in a similar way Lord Shiva is derived from Lord Krishna for the work of destruction without there being any possibility of Lord Krishna being derived from Lord Shiva.

Here is the answer to your question as given by my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada:

Regarding those who say that Shiva is the Supreme, in the Rig Veda it is stated: "om tad visnoh paramam padam.'' The lotus feet of Vishnu are the supreme devotional platform. There Vishnu is accepted as the Supreme. So there are 18 Puranas. Six of them are for persons in the modes of ignorance, some for those in passion, and the topmost are for those in goodness, the sattvic puranas. If one intelligently reads the Puranas and Vedas, then he can understand that Vishnu is the Supreme Person. But, for those on the stage of ignorance and passion, sometimes such statements are there. So it depends on the quality of the nature of the person that one accepts Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu as the Supreme, but one who studies scrutinizingly all the Vedic literature and who accepts the statements of the acharyas who guide the destiny of Vedic culture of India who all accept Vishnu as the Supreme Person, then he will also have the same conclusion.

So far we are concerned in the Krishna consciousness movement, we are preaching the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita. Krishna is the Supreme Person even before all demigods including Lord Vishnu even, and of course Lord Shiva. Our fundamental principle is the teaching of the Bhagavad-gita. Those persons who cannot understand this on account of particular modes of nature, such persons require further education, and until such time is fulfilled, we are helpless. To an animal in the modes of ignorance, how can we preach? Then we are helpless.

It is stated in the Vedas: eko narayana asin na brahma na isano. . . In the beginning there was no Brahma, no Shiva, only Krishna. The cosmic manifestation is from Mahat Tattva, and before the Mahat Tattva there is Narayana.

Sankaracarya is a Lord Shiva worshipper and an incarnation of Lord Shiva, and he admits that Narayana is the master, and Narayana is the Supreme. narayanah paro 'vyaktat. This is the best authority. What more evidence you want? This is in his Sanka Bhasya on Bhagavad-gita. This is not even the statement of the Puranas but of Sankaracarya's own writings. How can you deny if the incarnation of Lord Shiva says that Krishna is Supreme?

In the Puranas it is stated that another demigod is supreme just to convince the devotee. Just like a student in primary school, he thinks the primary education is everything and has no idea of higher education. This is to convince the devotees but from the Gita we understand that it is from Krishna that He gives the faith by which one can worship the demigods.

Krishna says "aham adi hi devanam.'' Is Krishna speaking a lie? "mattah parataram nanyat [Bg. 7.7].'' Nobody is greater than Me", He says. Why should we reject Krishna's statement? Our mission is to put Krishna as first, and they may take it or not. We do not interfere with their choice, but we do it as our duty.

[ Srila Prabhupada letter to H.H. Satsvarupa dasa Goswami dated Nov. 3rd, 1974]

Thought For The Day: Wake Up, Sleeping Souls!

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Lord Caitanya is calling, "Wake up, sleeping souls! Wake up, sleeping souls! How long will you sleep in the lap of the witch called Maya?" He does not like to see us unnecessarily suffering in the cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease when instead we could be relishing eternal lives, full of knowledge, and full of bliss in the unlimitedly sublime spiritual world. We should heed His call and fully capitalize on His mercy by chanting as much as possible, "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare" every day. This will be the most sublime perfection of our existence.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

There is nothing silly about what I have written. It is a very serious subject matter. This is your silly mistake to say that what I have written is silly.

Our modern society is using sex for the wrong purpose, as some kind of recreational sport. And this is creating so many problems and difficulties. The fact of the matter is that sex is not meant for recreation. It's only purpose is for procreation.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Sex for Procreation or Recreation?

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

In our modern day society, sex is considered to be the topmost of all recreational sports. Almost everyone is running after sex pleasure. Songs, novels, and movies are based on sex. Fashions are based on sex. But we see practically that sex is also the cause of so many miseries such as frustration, unwanted pregnancies, abortions and murders. The reality, according the Vedic scriptures, is that sex is meant only for procreation. It is not meant for recreation. If this principle were to be followed, so many problems would automatically be solved. A higher caliber of children would be born. There would be no more murders of unborn children, no more love triangles, and no more jealousy murders.

The greatest benefit is that instead of people being absorbed in sex desire, they could absorb themselves in thoughts of God and thus become qualified to enter the spiritual world upon leaving their present material bodies. Those who keep sex in their brains will continue to take birth after birth in this miserable land of birth, death, old age, and disease. There is no reason for all this sexual consciousness. When we come to Krishna consciousness we become completely fulfilled and satisfied with no need for sex unless we would like to have a family.

Thought For The Day: It is Not this Religion or that Religion Because Religion is One.

Lord Jesus says that he is the only way and Lord Krishna says that we should abandon everything else and simply fully surrender unto Him. So which should we do? For those on the material platform there will appear to be a conflict between the teachings of Krishna and the teachings of Jesus. However those who are solidly situated on the spiritual platform will see that there is no contradiction between the teachings of Jesus and the teachings of Krishna. They will understand that Jesus and Krishna are teaching exactly the same thing.

Jesus says in John 14.6, "I am the way, the truth, and the light. No one comes to the Father except through me." This means that the way taught by Jesus is indeed the only way. That way is total surrender to the will of God. Jesus prays, "Father, not my will, but Thy will be done." He is showing the perfect example of someone who is completely surrendered to God. Jesus is a person who is perfect in following this instruction of the Supreme Father, Lord Sri Krishna who says in Bhagavad-gita 18.66 that we should abandon all other duties and simply fully surrender unto Him.

Personally, I was brought to Krishna consciousness by Lord Jesus. I was intently studying the Bible trying to figure out what made a Jesus as self-realized soul, so that I could also become a self-realized soul. One day I found it. He says, "Father, not my will, but Thy will be done." I knew then that all I had to become spiritually perfect would be to find out what is God's will for me and then fully surrender to Him. My daily prayer become, "Dear God, please guide me how I can become your perfect servant." At that time His Holiness Vishnujana Swami, an ISKCON sannyasi, came to Austin where I was living and held a meeting just half a block from where I was staying. After meeting him and associating with him for several weeks I could understand that God had sent him to me to answer my prayer. So I then fully surrendered to Lord Sri Krishna, the father of Jesus, by becoming an initiated disciple of ISKCON Founder-Acarya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada on 12 August 1971.

This makes me a Christian Hare Krishna or a Hare Krishna Christian because the lifestyle that my spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, has engaged me in is perfectly following the instructions both Lord Jesus and Lord Krishna. The final conclusion is that religion is one. There is no such thing as this religion and that religion.

Question: Difference Between Jesus and Krishna?

My wife, Jeanette, is originally a Catholic. I respect all the religions. She started chanting after we meet you on the 29th of June 2019 in Melbourne, Australia. I would just like to clarify what is the difference between Jesus and Krishna. Are they not the same? I do not want to force anyone about religion. I just want to become self-realized.

Answer: Jesus Brought Me to Krishna

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear LT,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Jesus never declared himself to be God. Rather he declared himself to be the son of God. I was originally a Christian, and I am still a Christian. I am a Hare Krishna Christian because Jesus Christ brought me to join the Krishna consciousness movement so that I could become like him, a person who is totally surrendered to carrying out the orders given to him by God.

Thought For The Day: How the Soviet Hare Krishnas Were Freed

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Today I am remembering the valiant effort of many devotees to rescue, in the mid 1980's, the Soviet Hare Krishna devotees from harassment and internment in Soviet prisons, labour camps and psychiatric institutions. The Committee to Free the Soviet Hare Krishnas, led by Kirtiraja Prabhu, coordinated an international campaign in the mid 1980s to bring attention to the KGB’s harassment and internment of Hare Krishna devotees in Soviet prisons, labour camps and psychiatric institutions.

In Australia, the campaign included protests in front of Soviet embassies in Sydney and Canberra in 1986, as well as a national bus drive throughout 1987 to collect a million signatures. Hearing of the Soviet devotee’s persecution a young 12 year devotee boy named Sri Prahlada Das wrote a letter to the President of the USSR Michael Gorbachev to express his dismay and request the devotees release. The letter attracted a lot of attention in Australia’s print and broadcast media. In addition to sending it by post, he also read it out to the media at Soviet embassy demonstrations in Sydney and Canberra.

To bring even more public attention to the cause Sri Prahlada later recorded the letter as a song, with his school mates singing the chorus “Mr Gorbachev Please Let our Friends Go”. This song was televised on national programs such as ABC's "7:30 Report," and was later released as a single and on an LP by record giant EMI.

In late 1987 while reading a news article about devotee’s hunger strike in front of the Soviet Embassy in Canberra, Prahlada noticed another article. He read that Australian prime minister Bob Hawke would be visiting Moscow to meet President Michael Gorbachev where he would request the release of Soviet Jewish dissidents. A request to the Prime Minister’s Office received a positive response that Bob Hawke was also willing to raise the issue of the Soviet Hare Krishnas with Gorbachev. A letter rushed to the prime minister included the names of some 25 Soviet devotees, headed by Srila Prabhupada’s Soviet disciple, Ananta Santi Prabhu, whose release had been a key focus of the campaign.

Within days of Bob Hawke’s Moscow visit several high-profile Soviet Jewish dissidents received phone calls confirming that they would be allowed to immigrate to Israel. Soviet Hare Krishna devotees were also freed, beginning with Ananta Santi Prabhu, who spoke gratefully with Sri Prahlada by phone shortly after his release describing it as “sudden.”

The eventual release of all the Soviet Hare Krishna devotees in 1988 was the culmination of great effort and struggle by devotees all around the world, not least by Kirtiraja Prabhu and The Committee to Free the Soviet Hare Krishnas.

We are eternally grateful to Kirtiraja Prabhu and Sri Prahlada Das for their efforts to free the Soviet Hare Krishna devotees. And we hope you enjoy the video below of Sri Prahlada singing his song.

A person who has realized the highest truth will externally experience the same birth, death, old age, and disease that everyone else is experiencing. However his perception of it will be entirely different. Instead of feeling how he is being pinched by the miseries of material existence, he will see how at every step God is blessing him with unlimited kindness by bringing him back to His eternal kingdom in the Spiritual Sky.

Thought For The Day: May the Whole World Now Become Krishna Conscious

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

All over the world people are hankering for peace and prosperity. The difficulty is that due to bodily misidentification they are going about trying to achieve these boons in completely the wrong way. This is why we want to now educate the entire human population in the science of the soul. When everyone can understand that they are a spiritual being qualitatively one with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the source of all existence, and learn the art of how to live in perfect harmony with Him with their every thought, word, and deed in all times, places, and circumstances universal, worldwide peace and prosperity will be the immediate worldwide result. Therefore we are now intensely praying that we can awaken the entire global human society to Krishna consciousness. Thought For The Day: How to Defeat Maya

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Maya, the material energy, is always trying to keep us tightly in her clutches. But if we will intensely call out to Lord Krishna like a child crying for its mother, "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare," we will be able to defeat Maya just like a soldier defeats an enemy. She will no longer we able to keep us in her grip. Therefore every day we should chant Hare Krishna as much as possible. This sincere chanting will save us from Maya's deluding influence.

Question: After liberation, can we fall again into the material world?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

My understanding from lectures is that we fell down from the spiritual world because we wanted to enjoy separately from dearest Krishna.

My question is that if we go back to the spiritual world, is there the possibility of our having the same desire again and thus falling back to material world?

If the answer is "yes," then how to prevent this from happening?

If the answer is "no," then why we fell down in the first place?

Many thanks for your guidance.

Regards,
Gaurav

Answer: Once burned, twice shy

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Gaurav,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

A foolish, curious child may stick his hand in the fire once and get burned. But having learned his lesson he won't do it again. In the same way, we may make the mistake once of trying to enjoy separately from the Lord, but having learned our lesson and having gone back to Him, we will not have the same foolish mistake again.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Full Protection from Fall Down

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada makes it very clear that we are in a very dangerous situation here in this material world. We can fall down from the path of spiritual enlightenment at any time. But he reminds us that if we are always praying for the Lord's protection and the blessings to successfully execute our duties, we will never be in danger of falling down. Here's how explains this in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Third Canto, Chapter Nine, Text 24:

"Unless one is sufficiently protected by the Lord, he may fall down from his spiritual position; therefore one has to pray constantly to the Lord for protection and the blessing to carry out one's duty. Lord Caitanya also entrusted His missionary work to His devotees and assured them of His protection against the onslaught of material affection. The path of spiritual life is stated in the Vedas to be like the edge of a sharpened razor. A little inattentiveness may at once create havoc and bloodshed, but one who is a completely surrendered soul, always seeking protection from the Lord in the discharge of his entrusted duties, has no fear of falling into material contamination."

So let us all now heed his advice and make our spiritual lives perfect.

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The dearmost person in my life is my beloved spiritual master, His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. It is he who, with the help of his agents such as His Holiness Vishnujana Swami, so mercifully rescued me from the most dangerous ocean of birth, death, old age, and disease. Question: Can We Be Like God?

So you are regarding God as a person. If that is the philosophy, then the Supreme was/ is one among us but of the highest value. So what stops a devotee to become like Him/Her?

Manash Bhakta

Answer: Simultaneously One and Different

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA My Dear Manash,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

God is the original person. Everything that exists except for Him is His manifested energy. We are the like the spark and He is like the fire from where the spark has come. Since heat and light are present both in the fire and in the spark we are qualitatively one with God. But since the amount of heat and light present in the fire and the spark are vastly different, we are quantitatively different from God. This the philosophy known as acintya-bhedabheda-tattva, God or the Absolute Truth is simultaneously, inconceivably one and different.

Thought For The Day: Torture or Reward Ourselves

Los Angeles, USA

Our actual position is that we are eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss. So why should we torture ourselves by misidentification with our temporary material bodies? Such misidentification unfortunately chokes off our ability to engage in actual loving relationships, and thus without tasting true love we will not be able to find genuine satisfaction. Thus we will remain in a frustrated state not being able to taste real happiness. Because to taste constant happiness is our real constitutional nature when such real happiness is not tasted we will imagine ourselves to be happy even when factually we are in the most miserable, abominable situations. This is called illusory happiness and it brings us no satisfaction at all. The solution for this madness is to come to Krishna consciousness by perfectly dovetailing all of our thoughts, words, and deeds with the pleasure of the Supreme Person. In such a perfect stage of consciousness we will taste unlimited, ever-increasing bliss at every minute. So it is now our choice whether we want to torture ourselves or reward ourselves.

Question: When Vedic Knowledge Was Transmitted?

My Dear Respected Gurudeva,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

When was Vedic knowledge transmitted to souls on this planet with the understanding that it is eternal knowledge?

Adrienne Ridenhower Wingfield

Answer: From the Beginning of Our Universe

My Dear Adrienne,

Please accept my blessings.

The Vedic knowledge was first transmitted into the heart of Brahma, the predominating demigod of our universe, by Lord Krishna 155 trillion years ago at the beginning of our universe. Then Lord Krishna personally appeared on this planet to transmit the same Vedic knowledge 5,000 years ago. Many realized spiritual masters also transmitted it after that. It was again purely transmitted 500 years ago by Lord Krishna appearing in the form of His own devotee, Lord Caitanya, and after that by the many spiritual masters who are the pure devotees of Krishna and Lord Caitanya. And 50 years ago it was transmitted by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, and right now it is being transmitted all over the world by those who are strictly following Prabhupada. And as a follower of Lord Brahma, Lord Krishna, Lord Caitanya, and Prabhupada I am also purely transmitting the Vedic knowledge in my e-course. Everyone is invited to sign up for it at: Ultimate Self Realization

Thought For The Day: Our World Desperately Needs a Proper Leader

Melbourne, Australia

Our modern day society is in great difficulty because it is completely devoid of proper leadership. In fact, it is like a chicken with its head cut off. And there is not much more to be said in this connection. Because of this lack of leadership our global society will regress more and more into a total breakdown of the social order. Eventually we will become a global society of cannibals. The only person who is qualified to lead us out of this chaos is that person who has brought his six urges completely under his control. Srila Prabhupada has described that the whole world will follow such a person. In this connection in the Nectar of Instruction we find the following verse by Srila Rupa Gosvami:

vaco vegam manasah krodha-vegam
jihva-vegam udaropastha-vegam
etan vegan yo visaheta dhirah
sarvam apimam prthivim sa sisyat

"A sober person who can tolerate the urge to speak, the mind's demands, the actions of anger and the urges of the tongue, belly and genitals is qualified to make disciples all over the world."

It is such a person who can indeed lead the whole world out of chaos. Therefore may there now be such leadership manifest on this planet to save the global civilization from complete, total ruination.

Are you sad to be in the this world? If so, you are in good shape because this is not your real home. Thought For The Day: The Solution for All Problems

Melbourne, Australia

When we put God back in the center where He belongs, automatically all of our problems are solved. How could it be this easy? The reason it is so easy is that we are all by our very natures the eternal servants of God. Just as a fish on the land is in great trouble, but when he is back in the water all of his problems are solved, in a similar way as soon we come back to our original constitutional natures as the eternal servants of God all of our problems are solved. The mission of the Krishna Consciousness Movement is to enlighten the entire world in this most sublime science because when they become thus enlightened global peace and prosperity will be the automatic worldwide result.

Thought For The Day: When We Are Completely in Maya

Melbourne, Australia

When we are completely in maya or illusion that is the time when we need to call out to Krishna for help. We should not be so proud and puffed up to think that we don't need any help. We should always feel fully dependent on Krishna's loving mercy. Krishna is always ready, willing, and able to save us from our bewilderment provided we are seeking His help. We simply have to beg Him to save us, and He will surely come to our rescue. So there is no excuse for our remaining in the clutches of maya. We simply must have the desire for liberation and intelligently act in accordance with this desire. This will surely save us.

Thought For The Day: Blessed Unlimitedly by His Holiness Vishnujana Swami

In the spring of 1971 I was blessed unlimitedly by getting the association of His Holiness Vishnujana Swami, the person who brought me to Krishna consciousness. His kirtanas were so uplifting that Srila Prabhupada wrote him as follows in a letter dated 4 April 1971:

"As soon as I remember that you are trying to fulfill my desire of trying to open ten centers, it gives me renewed vigor and life. Please do it nicely. I have got confidence in you because Krishna has given you special talent for chanting Hare Krishna Mantra. When you were chanting in L.A. temple in the evenings, or in the mornings, I enjoyed your chanting so nicely that I thought myself immediately carried to Vaikuntha. So I am always thankful to you for your activities in announcing the interest of our mission. Thank you very much. Most probably when I return to L.A. I may call you back just to hear your chanting of Hare Krishna Mantra. I am very anxious to meet you also."

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: How to Surrender to God?

How does the surrendering to God procedure start? What are the steps involved in surrendering to God?

Prashanth Gundeti

Answer: Here Are the Steps

My Dear Prashanth,

Please accept my blessings.

My spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada has in his writings answered your question in great detail as follows:

In the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.4.15-16), Srila Rupa Gosvami, a great authority in the devotional line, describes the different stages in coming to the point of love of Godhead:

adau sraddha tatah sadhu-sango 'tha bhajana-kriya
tato 'nartha-nivrttih syat tato nistha rucis tatah
athasaktis tato bhavas tatah premabhyudañcati
sadhakanam ayam premnah pradurbhave bhavet kramah
[Cc. Madhya 23.14-15]

The first requirement is that one should have sufficient faith that the only process for attaining love of Godhead is bhakti, devotional service to the Lord. Throughout the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna teaches that one should give up all other processes of self-realization and fully surrender unto Him. That is faith. One who has full faith in Krishna (sraddha) and surrenders unto Him is eligible for being raised to the level of prema, which Lord Caitanya taught as the highest perfectional stage of human life.

Some persons are addicted to materially motivated religion, while others are addicted to economic development, sense gratification, or the idea of salvation from material existence. But prema, love of God, is above all these. This highest stage of love is above mundane religiosity, above economic development, above sense gratification, and above even liberation, or salvation. Thus love of God begins with the firm faith that one who engages in full devotional service has attained perfection in all these processes.

The next stage in the process of elevation to love of God is sadhu-sanga [Cc. Madhya 22.83], association with persons already in the highest stage of love of God. One who avoids such association and simply engages in mental speculation or so-called meditation cannot be raised to the perfectional platform. But one who associates with pure devotees or an elevated devotional society goes to the next stage—bhajana-kriya, or acceptance of the regulative principles of worshiping the Supreme Lord. One who associates with a pure devotee of the Lord naturally accepts that person as his spiritual master, and when the neophyte devotee accepts a pure devotee as his spiritual master, the duty of the spiritual master is to train the neophyte in the principles of regulated devotional service, or vaidhi-bhakti. At this stage the devotee's service is based on his capacity to serve the Lord. The expert spiritual master engages his followers in work that will gradually develop their consciousness of service to the Lord. Therefore the preliminary stage of understanding prema, love of God, is to approach a proper pure devotee, accept him as one's spiritual master, and execute regulated devotional service under his guidance.

The next stage is called anartha-nivrtti, in which all the misgivings of material life are vanquished. A person gradually reaches this stage by regularly performing the primary principles of devotional service under the guidance of the spiritual master. There are many bad habits we acquire in the association of material contamination, chief of which are illicit sexual relationships, eating animal food, indulging in intoxication, and gambling. The first thing the expert spiritual master does when he engages his disciple in regulated devotional service is to instruct him to abstain from these four principles of sinful life.

Since God is supremely pure, one cannot rise to the highest perfectional stage of love of God without being purified. In the Bhagavad-gita (10.12), when Arjuna accepted Krishna as the Supreme Lord, he said, pavitram paramam bhavan: "You are the purest of the pure." The Lord is the purest, and thus anyone who wants to serve the Supreme Lord must also be pure. Unless a person is pure, he can neither understand what the Personality of Godhead is nor engage in His service in love, for devotional service, as stated before, begins from the point of self-realization, when all misgivings of materialistic life are vanquished.

After following the regulative principles and purifying the material senses, one attains the stage of nistha, firm faith in the Lord. When a person has attained this stage, no one can deviate him from the conception of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. No one can persuade him that God is impersonal, without a form, or that any form created by imagination can be accepted as God. Those who espouse these more or less nonsensical conceptions of the Supreme Lord cannot dissuade him from firm faith in the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krishna.

In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna stresses in many verses that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. But despite Lord Krishna’s stressing this point, many so-called scholars and commentators still deny the personal conception of the Lord. One famous scholar wrote in his commentary on the Bhagavad-gita that one does not have to surrender to Lord Krishna or even accept Him as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but that one should rather surrender to "the Supreme within Krishna.” Such fools do not know what is within and what is without. They comment on the Bhagavad-gita according to their own whims. Such persons cannot be elevated to the highest stage of love of Godhead. They may be scholarly, and they may be elevated in other departments of knowledge, but they are not even neophytes in the process of attaining the highest stage of perfection, love of Godhead. Nistha implies that one should accept the words of Bhagavad-gita, the words of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as they are, without any deviation or nonsensical commentary.

If a person is fortunate enough to vanquish all misgivings caused by material existence and rise up to the stage of nistha, he can then rise to the stages of ruci (taste) and asakti (attachment for the Lord). Asakti is the beginning of love of Godhead. By progressing, one then advances to the stage of relishing a reciprocal exchange with the Lord in ecstasy (bhava). Every living entity is eternally related to the Supreme Lord, and this relationship may be in any one of many transcendental humors. At the stage called asakti, attachment, a person can understand his relationship with the Supreme Lord. When he understands his position, he begins reciprocating with the Lord. By constant reciprocation with the Lord, the devotee is elevated to the highest stage of love of Godhead, prema.

--------------------

In this way my spiritual master has very thoroughly described the process of surrendering to God. I do hope that you can now fully enter into this process so that you will become fully qualified to become free the clutches of birth and death and regain your original, eternal identity in the pastimes of the Supreme Lord in His transcendental kingdom.

Hoping this finds you well.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: What is Real Independence?

Kuala Lumpur Airport, Malaysia

Today is a big holiday in the USA, known as the 4th of July or Independence Day. This is the day in 1776 that the British colonies in what is now the USA declared their independence from Great Britain. We are very fond of celebrating such independence here in this material world, but is this real independence? The actual fact is that we as long as we forced to repeatedly go through birth, death, old age, and disease here in this material world we are not actually free or independent. True freedom or independence comes when we fully surrender to Krishna and regain our original, eternal, youthful forms in the deathless spiritual sky.

Thought For The Day: Krishna Consciousness on a Cruise Ship

I was recently forwarded the wonderful story of how ISKCON devotee, Devindra-gopal Das came to Krishna consciousness on a cruise ship. The story is so nice I decided to share it with you.

He was working on cruise ships, and his ship at some point ported in India. While there he asked local people for a plant, because he wanted some greenery on the ship. So someone gave him a tulasi plant. He took it to his room and would water it. He was doing this for many months.

Then, because of the plant’s not having enough sunlight and too much salty air, it died. But he kept the plant. Shortly after this he lost his taste for meat and intoxication, and he couldn’t figure out why.

While stopped at another port, he went into the city and met a devotee and got a book from him. Then next day, the devotee met him again and asked him whether he had read any of it. He said no.

The next day they met again, and the devotee asked, “Have you read any of it?”

“No, I haven’t gotten around to it yet.”

The next day he also saw the devotee, and this time he thought he would lie just to satisfy the devotee. So he said, “Yes, I have started to read it.”

“And what do you think?”

“Yeah, it’s okay. Some of it is good.”

“The devotee said, “You haven’t read it yet. Whoever reads these books is either really into it or against it.”

"Wow, maybe I should read it," he thought, "This seems serious." So he did. And he loved it, and he started chanting.

He heard from the devotee later that you chant 108 mantras to make a round, and you do that 16 times. So to keep track, he would chant one mantra for every card in a deck of cards. There are 54 cards in a deck, so he would use a deck of cards. 54 + 54 =108. And with his socks he counted his rounds. Every two socks would be a round. That’s how he kept track of his rounds.

Of course, later he got beads. He is now the head purjari; previously and still now, he is the main go-to person at the temple, ready to fix anything, kind of the Jayananda Prabhu of Ljubljana.

It is always so enlivening to hear how our devotees have come to Krishna consciousness. Everybody's story is simply wonderful.

Question: Yoga and Mediation or Bhakti?

Does ISKCON (The International Society for Krishna Consciousness) promote yoga and meditation, or is its main focus on bhakti (devotion)?

Aromal Satiayababu

Answer: The Perfection of Yoga and Meditation

My dear Aromal,

Please accept my blessings.

We promote bhakti, which is perfection of yoga and meditation. So the answer is “both.” This is confirmed by Lord Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 6, Text 47, wherein He states:

yoginam api sarvesam
mad-gatenantaratmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam
sa me yuktatamo matah

"Of all yogis, the one with great faith who always abides in Me, thinks of Me within himself, and renders transcendental loving service to Me is the most intimately united with Me in yoga and is the highest of all. That is My opinion."

Thought For The Day: The Ultimate Ball Game

Shah Alam, Malaysia

Srila Prabhupada explains in a lecture:

"There is always a struggle between the atheist and the theist. If a person becomes God conscious, Krishna conscious, so he will find many enemies, because the world is full of demons. What to speak of the devotee of Krishna, even Krishna, when He personally came, He had to kill so many demons."

So the ultimate game ball is whether the leaders of the world will be the devotees or the non-devotees.

Question: Yoga and Hare Krishna?

How is yoga connected to Hare Krishna?

Hazel Adkins

Answer: The Perfection of Yoga

My Dear Hazel,

Please accept my blessings.

Krishna consciousness is the perfection of yoga. In other words, when the yogi goes up the yoga ladder to higher and higher levels of yoga he ultimately comes to the topmost yoga rung, the yoga of devotion to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.

Thought For The Day: Worldwide Drought is Coming

Shah Alam, Malaysia

It is now predicted that by 2040 the entire world will be in a drought. This is not surprising for those who study the teachings of His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta who wrote decades ago in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, 5th Canto, Chapter 2, Text 1:

"Modern heads of state are rogues and thieves who plunder the citizens instead of giving them protection. Rogues and thieves plunder without regard for law, but in this age of Kali, as stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam, the lawmakers themselves plunder the citizens. The next prediction to be fulfilled, which is already coming to pass, is that because of the sinful activities of the citizens and the government, rain will become increasingly scarce. Gradually there will be complete drought and no production of food grains. People will be reduced to eating flesh and seeds, and many good, spiritually inclined people will have to forsake their homes because they will be too harassed by drought, taxation and famine. The Krishna consciousness movement is the only hope to save the world from such devastation. It is the most scientific and authorized movement for the actual welfare of the whole human society."

So let us now boldly and intelligently educate the global population in the most profound science of Krishna consciousness for preventing a total breakdown of the human society and a most devastating drought that will turn this entire planet into a scorching desert.

Question: How to Get Rainfall?

Please accept my humble obeisances.

How do we protect Mother Earth and get regular rain fall to meet the water scarcity? I am chanting the Hare Krishna mantra whenever I get time even while walking and eating and during pensive or active mood. Will Lord Krishna bestow my genuine demands?

Karunakaran

Answer: Make the World Krishna Conscious

From: Shah Alam, Malaysia

My Dear Karunakaran,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The only way to get guaranteed rainfall is if the whole world becomes Krishna conscious. Otherwise, the entire planet earth will gradually become under a devastating global draught.

The only genuine demand is pure devotional service to Lord Sri Krishna. Every other demand is sinful. If you sincerely beg for pure Krishna consciousness, Krishna will bless you with it.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.
