Thought For The Day: Don't Waste Your Life

ISKCON Austin, Texas, USA

You are an eternal spiritual being. Don't waste you life wandering around as a lost soul in the cycle of repeated birth and death by spending your life simply serving your temporary senses or, if you are little more elevated, also serving the temporary senses of others. Real service is to connect yourself and others through pure loving devotion with Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Who is factually the source or all existence. This reconnection with Krishna bestows unlimited benefit upon everyone.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Does the Soul Exist?

Does the soul exist? I am convinced that there is no soul because we are born without identity and during the process of life we learn as primitive creatures.

Anonymous

Answer: The Soul's Existence is a Scientific Fact

Your body is changing at every minute with the old blood corpuscles constantly dying being replaced by an endless flow of new blood corpuscles. But in spite of this constantly changing body you have a constant unchanging sense of identity. For example you can remember things you did as a little child even though you now have an entirely different set of chemicals constituting your body. The soul is your permanent sense of identity beyond your constantly changing material body.

Thought For The Day: Turn On Your Soul (song lyrics)

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Do you know who you really are?
Do you know where you’re coming from?
Do you know for sure where you’re goin’
Or what you will become?

Chorus:

You’re eternal, full of knowledge and bliss
So remember and celebrate this
You’re not of this world, dear friend
Better tune in and turn on your soul.

Do you know what happens when you die?
Do you know what’s beyond the sky?
Do you think that body is you?
It’s just something that you’re passing through.

Repeat Chorus

We’re told that everything happens by chance.
That the universe has no person in control.
But I see that every machine has got an operator.
So the universe also has one
This I know

Do you know who you really are?
Do you know where you’re coming from?
Do you know for sure where you’re goin’
Or what you will become?

Repeat Chorus

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Is Truth Krishna?

Your Divine Grace,

Please accept my humble obeisances at your lotus feet. I am hoping you can answer a question for me. Is Truth something that exists separately from the Lord, or is Truth the Lord Himself, and thus eternally self existing? Here I'm not speaking only of transcendental truths, but the truths of the material world - the laws of nature.

Your Servant,
Jack

Answer: Krishna is the Absolute Truth

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Jack,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The very first verse of the Srimad Bhagavatam begins like this:

"O my Lord, Sri Krishna, son of Vasudeva, O all-pervading Personality of Godhead, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You. I meditate upon Lord Sri Krishna because He is the Absolute Truth and the primeval cause of all causes of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the manifested universes."

In other words, the laws of material world are also a manifestation of the Absolute Truth, Lord Sri Krishna.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: It's Time Now to Get Out of Maya

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

It's time now to get out of maya or illusion. For thousands and millions of lifetimes we have been misidentifying with matter, futilely trying to enjoy in that place where no factual enjoyment exists. Thus we have foolishly maintained our suffering situation in the cycle of birth and death. So it's high time that we become now a little intelligent and stop this unnecessary punishment of ourselves. It's time now to reward ourselves by total complete surrender to Lord Sri Krishna through the transparent via medium who purely represents him, the bona fide spiritual master.

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: Fast or Slow Rounds

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

My question is: With what speed should we chant our rounds? Fast or slow?

Your servant,
R.K.

Answer: Distinctly Chant and Hear Each Syllable

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear R.K.,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Regarding how to chant japa, Srila Prabhupada has instructed us as follows in the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 17, Verse 32 purport:

"One should note in this connection that chanting involves the activities of the upper and lower lips as well as the tongue. All three must be engaged in chanting the Hare Krishna mahamantra. The words "Hare Krishna" should be very distinctly pronounced and heard. Sometimes one mechanically produces a hissing sound instead of chanting with the proper pronunciation with the help of the lips and tongue. Chanting is very simple, but one must practice it seriously."

So speed is not the issue. Chanting and hearing each syllable distinctly is what counts.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: Why the Hare Krishnas Love Jesus

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The Hare Krishnas love Jesus because he is the best example of loving devotion to Lord Krishna. He is an ideal Vaisnava acharya. He is so devoted to his beloved Lord that he was even willing to be put to death by being nailed to a cross in His service. (Of course, it would be superficial to think that he was actually killed.) The night before his execution Jesus prayed that he could be saved from what was going to happen the next day, but that if God wanted him to go through with this, he was willing to accept it as an act of surrender to his beloved Lord. This prayer of Lord Jesus is what convinced me to take shelter of Lord Krishna as His totally surrendered devotee. So I am forever indebted to Lord Jesus Christ for inspiring me and guiding me by his perfect example how to completely surrender myself to Lord Sri Krishna.

Thought For The Day: The Whole World is Waiting

The whole world is simply waiting to be awakened to the transcendental platform of pure love of God. Therefore those persons who fully embrace Lord Caitanya's world deliverance mission as their very life and soul are blessed with the most sublime opportunity of being used by Lord Caitanya to assist Him in His world deliverance mission. What could be more sublime than this, to become an instrument in the hands of Lord Caitanya for the deliverance of the fallen, suffering souls of this world back to their original identities that they once had in the spiritual world before they foolishly tried to enjoy separately from the Lord?

Thought For The Day: Why People Think Hare Krishnas Are Weird

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada explains that because everyone in the world is material while we, his followers, are spiritual, they naturally think that we are strange. He explains this in a press conference that he gave on March 5, 1975 in New York. You can hear an excerpt from that press conference in today's Video for the Day.

Question: Is Austin Really Weird?

There is a famous saying, "Keep Austin Weird." But is Austin, Texas really that weird?

Mohammed Saiful Alam Siddiquee

Answer: We Want to Make It Weird

Currently Austin is just another run-of-the-mill city where people do the ordinary run-of-the-mill activities such as illicit sex, meat eating, and intoxication. Our mission here at the Austin Hare Krishna Center is to make this city truly weird according to modern day attitudes. We want to make Austin the first city on the planet earth where nobody has illicit sex, eats meat, or takes intoxication and everybody fully absorbs themselves every day in chanting the names of God such as Krishna, Allah, and Jehovah and dances every day in glorious festivals of spiritual bliss.

Thought For The Day: Always Put Krishna First

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

If we can simply always put Krishna first in all situations, always doing what is pleasing for Him, our lives will be perfect. We are so proud and so sophisticated that we concoct so many bogus philosophies to justify putting ourselves first and God second or even further down the list. Therefore we have turned this world into a hell. The time has come for us to give up this madness and become sane enough to realize that if we do not qualify ourselves for going back to home, back to Godhead we are living a life which is lower than the animals.

Question: How to Progress in My Profession?

My questions are:

1. How to win over the objectives of personal progress in professional service over spiritual progress in our life?

2. How to develop an attitude of fearlessness and move ahead with confidence when we move from protected professional life to unknown horizon of spiritual life?

Hare Krishna.

Tapas Chakraborty

Answer: Always Put God First

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Tapas,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

The Bible very nicely states in this connection: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and all things shall be added unto you.”

If you always put pleasing Krishna or God first, by His grace you will be completely fearless. Fear only comes when we accept something else more important that pleasing God.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Srila Prabhupada's Appearance Day

My Dearmost Srila Prabhupada,

Please accept my humble obeisances in the dust of your lotus feet.

I can never thank you enough for so kindly picking me up from this rotten material existence by engaging me in the devotional service of Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

As a hippie, a countercultural youth in the 60s and early 70s, I desired to be part of a spiritual revolution that could completely transform our materialistic planetary society creating a new peaceful and loving world social order. And I was doing whatever I thought I could do to help bring about such a transformation. After much search and endeavor it became clear that you were the only person who actually had the vision to successfully bring about such a transformation in the human society. So instead of endeavoring unsuccessfully on my own I became your disciple to assist you in your most powerful world deliverance mission.

You initiated me by a letter you sent me from London, England, dated 12 August 1971 giving me the name “Sankarshan Dasa.” (You have written that “Sankarshan” means “one who attracts all living entities.”) When I mailed you my guru-daksina, I told you of my desire to spread the Krishna consciousness movement. In your reply dated 7 September 1971, from London you so wonderfully and graciously instructed me as follows:

“I can see also that you are a very sincere and enthusiastic boy and are anxious for spreading this movement. Those are first class qualifications for making advancement in Krishna consciousness. So continue enthusiastically as you are doing and Krishna will surely bless you.”

Now, Srila Prabhupada, by your mercy, even though my body is 71 years old, I am still feeling a youthful energy, an enthusiasm for making the whole world Krishna conscious as soon as possible. I also find great strength, transcendental empowerment in this most sublime instruction you gave in a Srimad-Bhagavatam class in Los Angeles on 17 December 1973:

“So therefore our request is that these Europeans and Americans who have taken to Krishna consciousness, just become perfect in the understanding of this science and become guru and deliver the whole world.”

(At that time only Europeans and Americans had joined the movement. This instruction is now applicable for all devotees from all over the world.)

Srila Prabhupada, I do not know how much longer I will remain in my present body. I could die at any minute. But my humble request to you and Lord Sri Krishna is that I may remain in this material world birth after birth until your most sublime Krishna consciousness movement becomes fully successful in delivering the world as per you order to us. In other words, when I go back to Godhead I want to be able to give you the sankirtana report that now, by your mercy, the whole world has become Krishna conscious.

Thank you again and again millions upon millions of times for so kindly saving me from this most hellish material existence.

Your grateful servant of your servants,
Sankarshan Dasa Adhikari

Question: How Long to Become Free From Karma?

In the process of bhakti how long does it take for one to become completely free from all of his karma?

Sam Patel

Answer: Depends On One's Determination

That depends on one's determination. The perfection of bhakti, which is total surrender to Lord Krishna and which immediately frees one from heaps and heaps of accumulated karma, can be attained in one moment or it can take millions of lifetimes. It is totally up to the individual if and when he is ready to totally surrender to Lord Sri Krishna. One who is serious about doing this follows Lord Krishna’s instruction to take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master who then guides him how to master the art of bhakti.

Thought For The Day: Krishna Janmasthami Message from the Prime Minister of India

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The celebration of the auspicious festival of Janmastami is a blessed occasion for the innumerable devotees of Shri Krishna.

ISKCON has been making a remarkable contribution in spreading the divine philosophy, wisdom and message of Sri Krishna. Its members have been serving the humanity through its numerous philanthropic missions underlining the non-duality of service to God and humanity.

The relevance of Sri Krishna's message of peace, unbounded spiritual love and bliss is timeless and universal in its appeal. His sublime instruction to humanity to perform duty without attachment to its fruits continues to be even more relevant today.

The spiritual effulgence of Srimad Bhagavad Gita is a heritage that has been resonated far and wide. ISKCON has been playing a significant role in helping the the humanity benefit from the profound wisdom and guidance of the Bhagavad Gita. An inspiring treatise, Bhagavad Gita teaches us how to face and act in difficult situations in life. It is a a comprehensive manual that contains solution to every challenge faced by mankind.

As the ISKCON fraternity celebrates Janmasthami, let us all beseech Sri Krishna to bless and guide the mankind. May the collective chant of "Hare Krishna" pervade the spirit and bestow His grace on all the devotees and members of the ISKCON family.

I extend my best wishes to the ISKCON fraternity and pray that the spiritual vibes of Janmasthami celebrations will resonate far and wide and make the world a better place.

Question: How Were We So Fortunate?

Prabhupada, before this movement came here, we were so caught up in sinful activities. How is it that we were so fortunate to be blessed with this great Hare Krisna movement?

Sankarshan Das

(This is a question that I asked Srila Prabhupada on 2 March 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia USA.)

Answer: It is Krishna's Mercy

It is Krishna's mercy. Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted to give you. Now He has come here. You take advantage of it. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is kind to everyone. He has no discrimination that this cult should be spread only in India or amongst the Hindus or amongst the brahmanas. No. He wanted to spread this movement to all living being. Never mind. Prthivite ache yata nagaradi. That is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission. So now He has come. If you want, accept Caitanya Mahaprabhu's order, "Simply chant Hare Krishna." That is sufficient. But if you want to know more, further, through philosophy, through science, we have got already thirty or fifty books. Read them. Everything is there. Either you accept directly, or if you want to accept through science, through philosophy, through knowledge, there are books. Both ways, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is ready to help you. Now you take advantage of it. And we are glad that you are taking advantage. Now some of you, they have already joined. And in the educational institution, universities, they are also very much appreciative of our literature. So gradually it will be appreciated. But the sooner you take advantage of it is better.

Thought For The Day: Seeing Krishna Face to Face, Eye to Eye

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

On July 2, 1975 on a morning walk in Denver, Colorado USA, Srila Prabhupada most amazingly told us as follows:

"If you are suffering from cataract, how you can see distinctly? You have to get your eyes operated. Then you can see. So our bhakti process is simply purifying, purifying, more, more, more. When you are completely purified, you see God face to face, eye to eye, talk with Him, play with Him, just like cowherds boys, they are playing, the gopis are dancing. You get that position."

So this a great impetus for us to become Krishna's pure devotees.

Question: What is Devotional Service?

All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Hare Krishna, Prabhu.

Please accept my humble obeisances.

Prabhu, I have started reading Srimad Bhagavad-gita and I have read many of your useful messages on the Internet.

In Chapter 11 of Srimad Bhagavad-gita, lots of emphasis is placed on devotional service. Through devotional service, we can achieve to understand the Lord Krishna.

What is devotional service, Prabhu? I am a devotee who has not taken initiation yet. I wanted to know, how can I pursue my devotional service at this stage?

Thank you very much for enlightening me on this matter.

Hare Krishna.

Jainita Sam

Answer: All Thoughts, Words, and Deeds in Krishna's Service

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Jainita Sam,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Devotional service means to engage all of your thoughts, words, and deeds 24/7 in the service of Lord Sri Krishna. This art is learned and mastered from the bona fide spiritual master who engages you in chanting at least 16 rounds daily of the Hare Krishna mantra on japa mala beads while simultaneously strictly avoiding meat eating, illicit sex, intoxication, and gambling. The devotee only eats vegetarian foods which have been offered to Lord Sri Krishna with love and devotion, and as far as possible he spends all of his time away from his job in reading scripture, chanting Hare Krishna, and telling others about Krishna.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Cheaters and the Cheated

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

When Srila Prabhupada was giving a lecture on the Nectar of Devotion in Mumbai, India on January 6,1973 he spoke as follows:

"If there is some political meeting giving only bluff, lots of bluffs only, and people gather there by thousands and millions to hear the bluff. My Guru Maharaja therefore used to say that this present human society is a society of the cheaters and the cheated. Somebody is being cheated and somebody is cheater, a combination of two things, cheater and the cheated, because they do not know the real interest of life. And anyone who will speak all nonsense and bluff, he will be very much adored. This is going on."

Our Krishna consciousness movement is not based on this cheating principle. Lord Sri Krishna is our most intimate well-wishing friend who never cheats us in any way. And we are simply his messenger servants to connect everyone with His loving mercy.

Challenge: You Are All Thieves

You all are thieves and your course is only for rich persons who donate a bunch of money to your institution. Recently I made the mistake of registering for Vipassana, a similar course and literature. Vipassana refused my request as I am not on their money donor list. As as a result my faith is now broken in such institutions whose only business is to collect money.

I hate all such institutions and request from my side that you never ever email back to me. I don't want any emails from such fraud institutions.

We have nothing to do with the Vipassana course that you have mentioned. Nor have we even heard of it before. We are aware that most of what is going on in the material world is simply an affair of the cheaters and the cheated.

But we are not a cheating business. We never demand money from anyone. Our teachings are our gift of love to you. We simply want to serve you by teaching you how to achieve perfect happiness. But as per your request we are now removing you from our mailing list.

Thought For The Day: Don't Kill Your Mother

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Would you kill your mother and eat her flesh after she stops breast feeding you? So how can anyone in their right mind kill their second mother, the cow, when her breast milk dries up. The karma that the modern day society is accruing by cow killing is killing the human civilization. Therefore cow killing can rightly be described as suicidal. When will the fools wake up and realize that they have to stop killing the cows?

Question: No Job. What to Do?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my humble obeisances.

I am trying to be a servant of Krishna. But recently I have lost my job and am unable to find new one. This is affecting my devotion so much so that sometimes I am asking Krishna to help me get a job. I know this is wrong, but I don't know what to do. Please help me.

Regards
R.K.

Answer: Pray for Pure Devotion

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Devotee,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Lord Sri Krishna assures us in Bhagavad-gita, Chapter 9, Text 22:

ananyas cintayanto mam
ye janah paryupasate
tesam nityabhiyuktanam
yoga-ksemam vahamy aham

"For those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form—to them I carry what they lack, and I preserve what they have."

You are having difficulty because, instead of approaching Krishna exclusively for devotion, you are asking Him for a job. The correction for this mistake is that you should now only pray to Him to make you His pure devotee. When you do this, Krishna will arrange for you to get a job.

We do not need to pray to God to provide us with our material necessities. If we will simply fully surrender unto Him, He will personally see that all our material necessities are taken care of.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Thought For The Day: Know Who You Are and Be Who You Are

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

There is no reason to ever suffer again. So why do it? Suffering is only due to ignorance of your anti-material or spiritual existence which is eternal, full of bliss, and full of knowledge. You simply have to revive your original enlightened consciousness within by deeply meditating on the holy names of God. By doing so you will enter into the dimension of unlimited bliss and knowledge. So what are you waiting for? Do it right now. Fully surrender yourself to Krishna by chanting His names with love and immediately enter the perfect spiritual realm of boundless happiness.

My Dear Lekshmis,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Your relatives are totally wrong. One who does not take to spiritual life will be a complete total failure because in his next life he will take birth in the animal kingdom. On the other hand, one who takes devotion to God as his purpose in life and offers his career in the service of the Lord will not only be successful in his career. He will also attain the highest success at the time of death of returning to his original home in the spiritual world to live an eternal life, full of bliss, and full of knowledge. So dedicate your life fully to Krishna and offer your career in His service.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari

Thought For The Day: Srila Prabhupada Presents Krishna's Peace Formula

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Amid the antiwar protests of late 1966, Srila Prabhupada put out a mimeographed leaflet (among the very first of his publications in America) from his small storefront temple on New York's Second Avenue. Srila Prabhupada's followers and sympathizers handed this leaflet out by the thousands on the streets of New York, and later in San Francisco, Montreal, and other cities. His "Peace Formula" was an entirely new approach to the antiwar question, and for thousands of Americans, it provided the perfect solution.

---------------------------------------

The great mistake of modern civilization is to encroach upon others' property as though it were one's own and to thereby create an unnecessary disturbance of the laws of nature. These laws are very strong. No living entity can violate them. Only one who is Krsna conscious can easily overcome the stringency of the laws of nature and thus become happy and peaceful in the world.

As a state is protected by the department of law and order, so the state of Universe, of which this earth is only an insignificant fragment, is protected by the laws of nature. This material nature is one of the different potencies of God, who is the ultimate proprietor of everything that be. This earth is, therefore, the property of God, but we, the living entities, especially the so-called civilized human beings, are claiming God's property as our own, under both an individual and collective false conception. If you want peace, you have to remove this false conception from your mind and from the world. This false claim of proprietorship by the human race on earth is partly or wholly the cause of all disturbances of peace on earth.

Foolish and so-called civilized men are claiming proprietary rights on the property of God because they have now become godless. You cannot be happy and peaceful in a godless society. In the Bhagavad-gita Lord Krishna says that He is the factual enjoyer of all activities of the living entities, that He is the Supreme Lord of all universes, and that He is the well-wishing friend of all beings. When the people of the world know this as the formula for peace, it is then and there that peace will prevail.

Therefore, if you want peace at all, you will have to change your consciousness into Krsna consciousness, both individually and collectively, by the simple process of chanting the holy name of God. This is a standard and recognized process for achieving peace in the world. We therefore recommend that everyone become Krsna conscious by chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

This is practical, simple, and sublime. Four hundred and eighty years ago this formula was introduced in India by Lord Sri Caitanya, and now it is available in your country. Take to this simple process of chanting as above mentioned, realize your factual position by reading the Bhagavad-gita As It Is, and reestablish your lost relationship with Krishna, God. Peace and prosperity will be the immediate worldwide result.

---------------------------------------

We hope and pray that the modern day society now can accept Lord Sri Krishna's most sublime peace formula.

Thought For The Day: Accepting the World Deliverance Mission

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My spiritual master, Srila Prabhupada, gave us the following order on 17 December 1973 in Los Angeles, California, USA:

"Just become perfect in the understanding of this science and become guru and deliver the whole world."

So how are we to relate to the orders we have received from our spiritual master? Are they optional or mandatory? In this connection Srila Prabhupada has written as follows in his purport to Srimad Bhagavatam, Third Canto, Chapter 24, Text 13:

"Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura has stated that the order of the spiritual master is the life and soul of the disciples. As a man cannot separate his life from his body, a disciple cannot separate the order of the spiritual master from his life. If a disciple follows the instruction of the spiritual master in that way, he is sure to become perfect. This is confirmed in the Upanisads: the import of Vedic instruction is revealed automatically only to one who has implicit faith in the Supreme Personality of Godhead and in his spiritual master."

So it is only by this unflinching faith in the orders received by one's spiritual master that one can understand the true meaning of the Vedic literature. Thus if we can to truly understand the Vedic teachings we must accept the world deliverance mission given to us by Srila Prabhupada as our very life and soul.

Question: Liberation When One's Guru is Bogus?

If a pure and true disciple serves the pseudo guru (but the disciple doesn't know that), will he attain the truth/self-realization even when his guru has no trace of truth/self-realization?

Chirag Khatri

Answer: Sincere Seekers Get Bona Fide Gurus

If one wants to be cheated, he will be attracted to a bogus guru who will misguide him and leave him in a state of illusion. But those who are sincere about attaining genuine self-realization will be guided by the Lord within their hearts to take shelter of a bona fide spiritual master.

Thought For The Day: Krishna is Absolutely, Inconceivably Amazing

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Once one awakens his dormant Krishna consciousness he will experience the greatest transcendental bliss at every minute by always thinking of Krishna, seeing everything in relationship with Krishna, and connecting everything with Krishna by offering it to Him in a mood of pure loving service. The attractive things of this world that captivate the minds of everyone will then pale away into total insignificance as he relishes the unlimited beauty of Krishna and the unlimited sweetness of being purely absorbed 24/7 in a loving relationship with Him, who is the source of all existence.

Thought For The Day: Gypsies and Krishna Consciousness

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Today's "Thought for the Day" is a wonderful installment from the diary of my beloved Godbrother, His Holiness Indradyumna Swami as follows:

During the month of June I visited ISKCON’s temple in Skopje, Northern Macedonia. Macedonia is a small, land-locked country in Southeastern Europe with a population of just 2.7 million people. I had been invited to speak and hold kirtana at the country’s International Yoga Day Festival. While we were waiting at a red light on the way to the festival, a horse-drawn wooden cart driven by a teenage boy and holding a family of gypsies pulled up alongside our car. I grabbed my camera, wanting to capture the juxtaposition between the old and the new at the intersection. The gypsy boy was obviously intimidated by the camera; he jumped off the cart and came running towards me, his fist raised.

“Please don’t take offense,” I said to him. “I greatly respect your people.” He lowered his fist. “Really?”

“Yes,” I replied. “One time I was attacked by some hooligans and your gypsy brothers stepped in to defend me. They literally saved my life.”

“I see,” he said. “Well, ok then.” He returned to his cart and they went on their way.

“Did some gypsies really save your life?” my driver, Prema-vilas dasa, asked me as the light turned green.

“Yes,” I said. “In France in the 1970s a motorcycle gang of 10 men attacked my sankirtan party. Seven of us were camped by a river near the city of Marseille and early one morning they came at us with baseball bats and iron chains. We had no chance. But a group of gypsy men who we had befriended and who were camping nearby came to our rescue with big sticks and a ferocious presence I hadn’t seen before or since. We all became close friends in the ensuing days. When it came time for us to move on, the leader of the gypsies declared I was one of their brethren; he cut his arm with a knife and indicated I should do the same. I was young and somewhat naive and I followed his order. We placed our wounds together to exchange our blood; this is the tradition in the gypsy community for sealing the bonds of brotherhood. Whenever I share this story with gypsy community, no matter in which country I meet them, they take me as one of their own.”

“Wow!” said Prema-vilas.

“I actually have several gypsy disciples around the world,” I added. “And they’re some of my best disciples.”

“We have a large community of gypsies here in Skopje,” said Prema-vilas. “But we’re wary of them. They beg at the red lights and some of them steal.”

“Every ethnic group contains people with bad habits,” I said. “But ultimately everyone is a spirit soul, part and parcel of Krishna. Have you ever tried sharing Krishna consciousness with the local gypsy community?”

“No way!” His response was vehement.

“Then,” I said, “now is the time to reach out to them.” I quoted a famous verse from the Srimad Bhagavatam:

kirata-hunindhra-pulinda-pulkasa
abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah
ye 'nye ca papa yad-apasrayasrayah
sudhyanti tasmai prabhavisnave namah

“Kirata, Huna, Andhra, Pulinda, Pulkasa, Abhira, Sumbha, Yavana, members of the Khasa races and even others addicted to sinful acts can be purified by taking shelter of the devotees of the Lord, due to His being the supreme power. I beg to offer my respectful obeisances unto Him.” [ Srimad Bhagavatam 2.4.18 ]

“Bear in mind,” I said, “that this verse includes you and me amongst the fallen races!”

Prema-vilas looked thoughtful. “How would we go about reaching out to the gypsies of Macedonia?”

“We’ll go straight to the top,” I said. “We need to find out who the leaders are in the gypsy community. We’ll start by visiting one of them and offering our services.”

“What kind of services?” said Prema-vilas.

“We can offer to help their community by giving them food, if they need it,” I said. “Or we can open a vegetarian restaurant. We can start a small yoga studio where we can eventually introduce kirtan and Bhagavad-gita classes. We can have regular harinam parties through their area. And we can make friends with them.”

“You really think that will work?” he said.

“It works everywhere else in the world without exception,” I said. “Besides, chanting Hare Krishna is the chosen dharma for the age of Kali. It must work! Do some research and get back to me. I’d be happy to visit one of their leaders while I am here. I’ll show him the brotherhood scar on my arm.”

The next morning Prema-vilas called me.

“Maharaja," he said, “I did some research and found out that the most influential leader of Macedonia’s gypsy community is a man named Mr. Shaban Saliu. He is the leader of a political party representing the gypsies. Because they form a large base of voters, his position is very strong in the country.”

“Call him up immediately,” I said. “Tell him a leader from our movement would like to meet him to offer our help to his people.”

Ten minutes later Prema-vilas called back.

“Mr. Saliu said he’d be very happy to meet you,” he said, sounding shocked. “Great,” I said. “When?”

“Right now,” Prema-vilas said. “He’s invited you to his home.”

“Wow! Fantastic!” I said. “Gather a few devotees and we’ll leave in an hour.”

Half an hour later Prema-vilas called me back.

“I can only find 4 devotees who want to go,” he said. “The others are a little hesitant. Aside from a large market we occasionally visit there, we’ve never really ventured into the gypsy community even though it’s just outside the city.”

“Four devotees will be ok,” I said. “Try to find a garland we can take and a few sweets and a Bhagavad-gita too.

The devotees were quiet and fidgety as we drove into the gypsy community. People stared at us.

“It’ll be fine,” I said. “Lord Nityananda preached in such situations and He was always successful!”

Standing next to the gate at the address we’d been given was a nicely dressed gentleman. I got out of the car and he stepped forward and shook my hand with a wide smile on his face.

“Welcome to our community,” he said. “I’m Shaban Saliu. You can just call me Shaban.” “I am honored to meet you and, Shaban,” I said. “It’s been a long time coming.”

“Please come into my home,” he said. He took my hand and led me into his house. “We need to go upstairs. I hope you’re ok with a few stairs.”

Nothing could have prepared me for Shaban’s staircase. Beautiful paintings of Radha and Krishna lined the wall all the way up. In the living room there were even more paintings of Krishna: Krishna playing His flute, Krishna dancing with the gopis and Krishna frolicking in the Vrindavana forest.

“So, you are part of a spiritual tradition?” he asked me, gesturing towards a couch.

“Yes,” I replied, my eyes wandering over the paintings. “Our movement is one of the oldest spiritual traditions in the world. It’s based on an authentic scripture called the Bhagavad-gita which was spoken by Lord Krishna in India 5,000 years ago. I believe we can help your community in many ways. For stress and anxiety, we can teach yoga and meditation. We also sing a spiritual song composed of various names of God that quickly purifies the heart and awakens love for the Lord. It’s called the Hare Krishna mantra. We can also distribute blessed food to the people in your community who need it. Some of our volunteers can also work with the youth to reduce crime and violence.”

“What can I say?” Shaban said. “I am completely at your service. I will offer you all my political contacts. There is no city in this country where I don’t have connections. If you can open a preschool or can work in primary education, you are free to share your lifestyle and wisdom with our children. I am familiar with your singing, with your song. In 1988 I saw people like you singing every Saturday on a street corner in Skopje. It went on for many years. There were three boys and three girls. Some were playing drums and others small cymbals.”

“Yes, it all comes from India,” I said.

“Ah, mystical India,” he said, closing his eyes. “I went to India and spent a couple of weeks there. I was fascinated by the country. I felt as if my roots were there. I actually felt it was my home.”

“Really?” I asked.

“Yes!” he said. “In fact, I did some research. I have a PhD in law, so I was given some facility and you know what I discovered? I discovered that my people, the Romani gypsies, originally come from India. I encountered one scholar at a university who wrote a book entitled The Lost Children of India. He described in detail how my people migrated to Europe in the eleventh century from the northern part of India in search of a better livelihood and to escape rising Muslim attacks. Historical and archaeological evidence suggest the Romani used to dwell in the states of Punjab, Haryana, Sindh and Rajasthan of present-day India. Some scholars say we used to be a part of the present Dalit community, which is a minority still existing in India.”

“I am aware of all this,” I said.

A distinguished-looking woman entered the lounge.

“This is my wife, Mirdita,” Shaban said. “She just completed her Master’s degree in Journalism.”

“I am honored to meet you,” I said, shaking her hand. “You can call me Maharaja.”

“Maharaja,” she said, “is this your first time here in our community?”

“Yes, it is,” I said. “We have come to serve your people. Your husband and I have just been discussing that we have a bond of brotherhood because both of our traditions come from India. Plus, my life was saved by your people one time and I became blood brothers with the leader of that group of gypsies. I want to help in whatever way I can.”

She said, “Perhaps you can start with a workshop in our community to present what the Hare Krishna faith is. Most gypsies here are Muslim, but I believe they would be interested in your teachings.”

I glanced over at the devotees who had come with me; their mouths were virtually hanging open.

“We could invite Romani people from all over Macedonia,” Shaban said. “You can give a talk, Maharaja, and sing your special song. It will turn our Romani community around. I think some of them will find their way through your teachings. I am very impressed with your culture. Let’s work together as a team and put something together on a high level.”

“Thank you, Shaban,” I said. “I have this gift for you.” I handed him a copy of the Bhagavad-gita.

“I have heard about this book,” he said. “I see there is even the original Sanskrit text here. The roots of our language come from Sanskrit, you know. Now, tell me: who is Krishna? I know he is blue and I know I have always been attracted to Him. You can see the paintings of Krishna I brought back from my visit to India. I have some paintings of His friends too. I think one friend is named Shiva. Others are Ganesh and Saraswati. Am I correct?”

I nodded and explained to Shaban who Krishna is and the difference between him and the demigods he mentioned.

After discussing for more than an hour I concluded saying, “Let’s keep in close touch.”

“Yes, of course,” Shaban said with a smile. “And Maharaja, I would like to invite you to my son’s wedding in a month’s time. Around 800 guests will be coming, including many distinguished members of Macedonian society. The leader of the opposition party will also be there. I would like you to give the opening address at the wedding. Maybe you could speak for 30 minutes and sing your song as well. What do you think?”

“I would be honored, Shaban,” I replied, overwhelmed.

As he escorted us down the stairs I glanced again at the paintings.

I thought to myself, “My Lord, who can understand your plans? You are the supreme mystic!”

“Let’s talk later about making a Hare Krishna base here in our Romani community,” Shaban said when we reached the car. “Let’s not just talk words; let’s do something tangible. It can be connected to the culture we share. It can remind gypsies of their origins and can facilitate the deeds of your community as well. Let’s construct a building or monument that will stand for a hundred or two hundred years. Something glorious to represent our combined cultures. This day of our meeting should go down in history in the collective memories of our people.”

He took both my hands and said warmly, “You are so wonderfully dressed! Before you go, let’s walk through the streets of our community so you can meet my people. We can take a few photos as well to remember this momentous day.”

He taught me a few phrases in gypsy language as we walked. When I greeted people with those words they smiled broadly. Everyone knew Shaban and showed him respect. Because I was with him, they were very respectful to me as well. An hour later, when we finally parted ways, Shaban took my hand one last time.

“There is something called destiny,” he said. “Today destiny has brought us together. And in one month’s time destiny will bring us together again.”

“Yes,” I agreed. “Destiny is in the hands of the Lord. How He brings us together to serve Him is beyond our understanding.”

*****************************************

In conclusion, Indradyumna Maharaja gave this powerful quote from Srila Prabhupada:

“I was born in a different family, my Guru Maharaja was born in a different family. Who knew that I will come to his protection? Who knew that I would come in America? Who knew that you American boys will come to me? These are all Krishna's arrangement. We cannot understand how things are taking place.”

Thought For The Day: Always Think of Krishna

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Always think of Krishna and never forget Him. There are so many wonderful things to remember about Him: His names, His fame, His pastimes, His teachings, His entourage, His paraphernalia, His qualities, etc. Absorbing ourselves in thoughts of Krishna is the perfection of meditation. Such thinking immediately transfers us into the spiritual existence far, far beyond the cycle of repeated birth, death, old age, and disease. Therefore to not be Krishna conscious, even for one second, is the greatest stupidity.

Thought For The Day: Don't Kill Your Mother

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

The cow is our second mother because when we stop drinking our mother's breast milk, we drink the milk from the cow. How then could we be so cruel as to kill our mother and eat her flesh when her breast milk dries up? This is the position of our modern so-called civilization. Therefore due to the karmic reaction of our killing millions of cows every day this planet is becoming more and more of a hell with every passing day. If people want peace and prosperity, it's time for them to wake up and realize that should not kill our mother.

Thought For The Day: The More You Give Love, the More You Get Love

Material consciousness means to take as much as possible and give as little as possible. Spiritual consciousness means to give as much as possible and take as little as possible. Those who are in material consciousness end up with nothing. And those who are in spiritual consciousness end up getting everything. This is confirmed in the Bible wherein Lord Jesus says, "Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth."

Thought For The Day: Unlock the Unlimited Bliss Within Your Heart

There is no reason to be miserable in any situation. Misery is simply due to ignorance. When one is enlightened with transcendental knowledge he can relish an ocean of unlimited bliss within his heart at every moment. This process of tapping into that unlimited ocean of bliss is called Krishna consciousness. It is not a sectarian religious faith. It is rather the science of awakening the actual self that has been sleeping within through thousands and millions of lifetimes.

Thought For The Day: Don't Be a Fool

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada wonderfully describes as follows in his purport to Sri Caitanya-caritamrita, Adi Lila, Chapter 7, Text 72:

"Only fools give up the service of the spiritual master and think themselves advanced in spiritual knowledge. In order to check such fools, Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself presented the perfect example of how to be a disciple. A spiritual master knows very well how to engage each disciple in a particular duty, but if a disciple, thinking himself more advanced than his spiritual master, gives up his orders and acts independently, he checks his own spiritual progress. Every disciple must consider himself completely unaware of the science of Krishna and must always be ready to carry out the orders of the spiritual master to become competent in Krishna consciousness. A disciple should always remain a fool before his spiritual master. Therefore sometimes pseudo spiritualists accept a spiritual master who is not even fit to become a disciple because they want to keep him under their control. This is useless for spiritual realization."

I have personal experience of foolish so-called disciples who cut themselves off from their spiritual master. Such unintelligent acts cast a dark shadow of gloom upon their future.

Thought For The Day: How to Live Right Now in the Spiritual World

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada wonderfully describes as follows in the Krishna Book, Chapter 14--"Prayers Offered by Lord Brahma to Lord Krishna":

"Whatever is attractive within the cosmic manifestation is due to Krishna. Krishna is therefore the reservoir of all pleasure. The active principle of everything is Krishna, and highly elevated transcendentalists see everything in connection with Him. In the Caitanya-caritamrita it is stated that a maha-bhagavata, or highly advanced devotee, sees Krishna as the active principle in all movable and immovable living entities. Therefore he sees everything within this cosmic manifestation in relation to Krishna. For the fortunate person who has taken shelter of Krishna as everything, liberation is already there. He is no longer in the material world. This is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita: Whoever is engaged in the devotional service of Krishna is already on the brahma-bhuta, or spiritual, platform. The very name Krishna suggests piety and liberation. Anyone who takes shelter of the lotus feet of Krishna enters the boat for crossing over the ocean of nescience. For him, this vast expanse of the material manifestation becomes as insignificant as the water in a calf’s hoofprint. Krishna is the shelter of all great souls, and He is also the shelter of the material worlds. For one who is on the platform of Krishna consciousness, Vaikuntha, or the spiritual world, is not far away. He does not live within the material world, where there is danger at every step."

From these wonderful teachings of Srila Prabhupada we can derive the simply wonderful understanding that if we fully take shelter of Krishna as everything, we will not be living in the material world. We will be living in the spiritual world. So we don't have to die to go back to the spiritual world. We can be living there right now by simply fully taking shelter of Krishna. What could be more sublime than this?

Thought For The Day: Krishna, the Most Sublime Person

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

There is no one more sublime and divine than Krishna because He is the ultimate source of all sublimity and divinity. In fact no one or nothing can be sublime or divine unless Krishna invests that person or that thing with a portion of His divine, sublime potencies. If we train ourselves to see everything in this way, everything will become marvelously beautiful. So why not see everything through the eyes of Krishna consciousness? If we do so, it will turn our every moment into the most marvelously thrilling experience.

Thought For The Day: You Become a Guru

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada has unlimited compassion unto the fallen, suffering souls of this age. Therefore he sacrificed himself fully for spreading the teachings of Lord Sri Krishna all over the world. This propagation of Krishna consciousness is what will actually save today's suffering world population from their miseries. Therefore we should take very seriously this mission of Lord Caitanya to make the whole world Krishna conscious.

In this regard Lord Caitanya has ordered us that whomever we meet we instruct him in the teachings of Krishna and thus we must become gurus for delivering the suffering people of this world back to home, back to Godhead. To become a guru is not very difficult. You don't have to manufacture anything. Simply tell everyone you meet about the teachings of Lord Krishna. In this way you will become a guru.

Question: Placing Our Faith?

Does it matter where we place our faith?

Sarvopama Das

Answer: Faith in Spirit

From:ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Sarvopama Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

If you put your faith in matter, your next body will be material. And if you put your faith in spirit, your next body will be spiritual. So now you decide whether you would like to have in your next life a spiritual body, which is eternal, full of knowledge, and full of bliss or a material body, which is temporary and full of ignorance and misery. And after giving this due consideration place your faith according to what kind of body you would like to have in your next birth.

Hoping this you make the right decision,

Thought For The Day: George Harrison and Krishna Consciousness

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

George Harrison rendered very valuable service to Srila Prabhupada in the early days of ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada had written the Krishna Book, but there was no money to print. So George donated the full printing cost and he also wrote in very wonderful introduction as follows:

"Everybody is looking for Krishna. Some don't realize that they are, but they are. KRISHNA is GOD, the source of all that exists, the Cause of all that is, was, or ever will be. As GOD is unlimited, HE has many Names. Allah-Buddha-Jehova-Rama: ALL are KRISHNA, all are ONE. God is not abstract; He has both the impersonal and the personal aspects to His personality, which is SUPREME, ETERNAL, BLISSFUL, and full of KNOWLEDGE. As a single drop of water has the same qualities as an ocean of water, so has our consciousness the qualities of GOD'S consciousness ... but through our identification and attachment with material energy (physical body, sense pleasures, material possessions, ego, etc.) our true TRANSCENDENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS has been polluted, and like a dirty mirror it is unable to reflect a pure image. With many lives our association with the TEMPORARY has grown. This impermanent body, a bag of bones and flesh, is mistaken for our true self, and we have accepted this temporary condition to be final. Through all ages, great SAINTS have remained as living proof that this non-temporary, permanent state of GOD CONSCIOUSNESS can be revived in all living Souls. Each soul is potentially divine. Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita: "Steady in the Self, being freed from all material contamination, the yogi achieves the highest perfectional stage of happiness in touch with the Supreme Consciousness." (VI, 28) YOGA (a scientific method for GOD (SELF) realization) is the process by which we purify our consciousness, stop further pollution, and arrive at the state of Perfection, full KNOWLEDGE, full BLISS. If there's a God, I want to see Him. It's pointless to believe in something without proof, and Krishna Consciousness and meditation are methods where you can actually obtain GOD perception. You can actually see God, and hear Him, play with Him. It might sound crazy, but He is actually there, actually with you. There are many yogic Paths -- Raja, Jnana, Hatha, Kriya, Karma, Bhakti -- which are all acclaimed by the MASTERS of each method. SWAMI BHAKTIVEDANTA is, as his title says, a BHAKTI Yogi following the path of DEVOTION. By serving GOD through each thought, word and DEED, and by chanting HIS Holy Names, the devotee quickly develops God-consciousness. By chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare Hare Rama, Hare Rama Rama Rama, Hare Hare, One inevitably arrives at KRISHNA Consciousness. (The proof of the pudding is in the eating!) I request that you take advantage of this book, KRISHNA, and enter into its understanding. I also request that you make an appointment to meet your God now, through the self-liberating process of YOGA (UNION) and GIVE PEACE A CHANCE.

All you need is Love (Krishna)

Hari Bol. George Harrison 31/3/70"

Thank you very much, George Harrison, for the wonderful service you have rendered tro Srila Prabhupada.

Thought For The Day: Enlightened Leadership Will Save the World

ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

Srila Prabhupada writes,

"... if the leadership of world affairs is entrusted to the devotees of the Lord, for which a worldwide organization under the name and style of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness has already been started, then by the grace of the Almighty Lord there can be a thorough change of heart in human beings all over the world because the devotees of the Lord are able authorities to effect such a change by purifying the dust-worn minds of the people in general. The politicians of the world may remain in their respective positions because the pure devotees of the Lord are not interested in political leadership or diplomatic implications. The devotees are interested only in seeing that the people in general are not misguided by political propaganda and in seeing that the valuable life of a human being is not spoiled in following a type of civilization which is ultimately doomed. If the politicians, therefore, would be guided by the good counsel of the devotees, then certainly there would be a great change in the world situation by the purifying propaganda of the devotees, as shown by Lord Caitanya."

May the whole world now become attuned to Srila Prabhupada's teachings.

Question: Why So Many "Isms"?

If God is omnipresent, then why are there so many "isms" like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bahaism?

Mara Cappello

Answer: Mixing In Material Conceptions

Dear Mara,

Please accept my blessings.

The answer to your nice question is that we have created so many “isms” because we have mixed our own foolish material conceptions with the pure science of loving God. Loving God is transcendental to all of these “isms.” In my free e-course I teach how one can attain the platform of pure spirituality beyond all of these “isms.” If you would like to check it out, you can do so at:

Thought For The Day: Yoga Magazine Publishes Ten-Page Feature on Srila Prabhupada’s Life and Legacy

by: Madhava Smullen for ISKCON News on July 20, 2019

Yoga Magazine in the UK has published a ten-page feature article in its June issue, written by ISKCON devotees, on the life and spiritual legacy of ISKCON Founder-Acharya Srila Prabhupada. See the full article here:

https://www.iskcon-london.org/files/2019/06/2019.06-yoga-magazine.pdf

Yoga Magazine says it is “the number one yoga, health and fitness brand in the UK and USA.” The publication is aimed at upscale cosmopolitan women aged between 25 and 45, who desire to improve their health and wellbeing.

Devotees made a connection when editor Dr. Malik received some of Srila Prabhupada’s books from colleagues who had met book distributors on the street. After reading the books, she was inspired, and approached ISKCON-London to ask if she could run a story.

Since this year is the 50th anniversary of ISKCON in the UK, devotees were happy for the opportunity to tell their story in a way that’s accessible to the yoga community.

Dr. Malik asked devotees to write the feature themselves, as they would want people to hear it. She and her staff were excited to publish it, and scheduled it for their June issue at the height of summer for maximum readership.

ISKCON-London Communications Secretary Natasha Menon, her husband Anantacharya Das and Jigna Chauhan compiled the article.

To do so they referred to the 'Abhay Charan' film series, and the books 'Chasing Rhinos' Volume 1 by Shyamasundara Das, 'Swami in a Strange Land' by Joshua Greene (Yogesvara Das), 'When the Sun Shines' by Ranchor Prime, and 'Your Ever Well-Wisher' by Satsvarupa Das Goswami.

The article presents Bhaktivedanta Swami, Founder of the Hare Krishna movement as “A well-wisher of the world.” It explains: “He was a profound spiritual master whose passionate goal to spread and teach bhakti yoga in the west was realized with great success. His meeting and collaboration with The Beatles also left a lasting legacy in the UK.”

The feature tells the entire story of Srila Prabhupada’s journey from his early childhood days and following Gandhi and the Indian Nationalist Movement, to meeting his guru Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, to establishing ISKCON in New York. It also follows pioneer devotees as they go to the UK where they meet the Beatles, have a hit record and set up the Radha Krishna Temple.

Finally, the article describes how Srila Prabhupada set up so many temples, centers, farms and restaurants during his lifetime; and gives a snapshot of what ISKCON is doing today. It concludes with ISKCON UK’s plans for its fiftieth anniversary, and discusses how devotees are making an effort to put on events and programs that make Krishna conscious philosophy more relatable and accessible to the public.

“When we sent the article to the editor, she wrote back saying, ‘I’ve read it so many times, and the story of Prabhupada is so inspiring to me and all the staff,’” says Natasha. “She had read books by him, but not about him – and I think the personal account of his journey really helped her relate to him.”

Natasha points out that back in the ‘60s, pioneers like Shyamasundara Das connected with the trendsetters of the time, such as the Beatles and the hippie community. Today, it’s yoga that is peaking everywhere around the world.

“Sometimes we don’t reach out enough, we’re just happy in our little bubble,” she says. “But I think every few generations, we need to reintroduce ourselves in a way that’s relevant to the current trends now. Of course, Bhakti Yoga is timeless wisdom. But we also have to make some effort to make it accessible to people – just like Srila Prabhupada did for us.”

Answers According to Vedic Wisdom

Question: What is Humility?

Dear Guru Maharaja,

Please accept my sincerest of humble obeisances

I have a question regarding the term 'humility'. What exactly does humility signify?

When devotees use sentences like 'humility means that apparent failure is also a success' or some say to be just quietly see the inappropriate things happening b4 you coz you are not qualified to raise your voice against, it is an offense , try to be humble (seems like saying close your eyes and let thoss things happen ) what exactly they want to draw out of us !? To be courageous and bold (which often taken as an offense among certain group of devotees) and being humble (which seems to be often misunderstood but used frequently) simultaneouslyŚ how does that balance come? Where to draw that fine line!?

Kindly guide,
Daya Lakshmi

Answer: Not Desiring to Be Honored

From: ISKCON Austin, Texas USA

My Dear Daya Lakshmi,

Please accept my blessings.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Here is Srila Prabhupada's definition of humility given in his Bhagavad-gita purport (BG 13.8-12):

"Humility means that one should not be anxious to have the satisfaction of being honored by others."

The humble preacher often speak outs very boldly about all the nonsense that is going on in the world. He is as soft as a rose and as strict as a thunderbolt.

I hope this meets you in the best of health and in an ecstatic mood.

Your ever well-wisher,
Sankarshan Das Adhikari
